The James Posey Sweepstakes have a winner
James Posey made his decision and it doesn't involve either of the NBA's best two teams. The ultra-coveted pine player has agreed on a deal with the New Orleans Hornets. It's for four years and approximately $25 million. And it's quite the boon for the Hornets, already among the top teams in the league but lacking in depth (especially off the bench) and championship experience. Posey supplies enough of both to potentially push an already impressive squad to the next level.
In the sense that the Hornets are among their chief competition in the West and they just got better, this hurts the Lakers, but beyond that, I'm not really sweating it. I've always felt Posey is among the NBA's more underrated players and he could definitely help, but I'd also be leery about giving a 31-year-old role player (nearly 32 when the season starts) four seasons of commitment. A great deal for the Hornets in the short run, but two years from now, they may not be enamored with the acquisition. Plus, I never thought the Lakers would end up with Posey, so to a large degree, crying about "losing" him feels like mourning milk you never owned but keep picturing spilled.
If you're a Sasha Vujacic fan, this can't possibly hurt the chances of getting him re-signed.

Peja and Posey. The hornets wanted PP but got another type of PP lol.
GO Lakers!

We'll still take care of New Orleans. We get Bynum, they add Posey, Celtics lose Posey (who killed us in the Finals). So all in all, it makes us even more of a favorite.
As long as the Hornets have Peja Stojakovic, then they will eternally suck in the playoffs.

Posey for 4 yrs./$25m is too much. Would've been nice to have but not at that price. Pass.

Any info in relation the diabetes? I am a type 2 diabetic."
Yes there is Charles, both in terms of the genes p53 regulates (a receptor for insulin for instance) and in terms of how diabetes effects the activity of p53.
Diabetics also tend to make antibodies against p53, which can lead to autoimmune disease.

Nearly everyone in the NBA other than Bruce Bowen is "overpaid". Really, when was the last time there was outrage over an NBA player being underpaid?

Good Morning Everyone.........A couple of names that have slipped through this very tight basketball net at the LA TIMES BLOG......Mo Evans still has not signed a deal yet...Dooling has still not signed a deal yet...Both of these guys could help us.Dooling has the ability to handle the ball and could be an option if Sasha bolts..Of the bigs left out there David Harrison would be a good project for Phill to tackle..He has had some mental issues but heck Kwame chucked a cake at someone ..
Cheers

posey to hornets. good for them. bad for the celtics.
in trade dreamland (aka espn trade machine):
lamar odom
vlad radmanovic
for
shawn marion
udonis haslem
doubt it would happen, lakers would be taking on more money.
however, marion only has one year left on deal - maybe we could re-negotiate an extension with him.
haslem is a more polished, proven turiaf. better jumper, playoff & finals tested.
lakers would lose lamar's and vlad's over-inflated contracts in the process.
fisher
kobe
marion
gasol
bynum
farmar
sasha
luke
trevor
haslem
mihm or mbenga
gives us a better defensive team (with marion and haslem). would rather roll the dice on marion's hefty contract than artest's froot loops personality...
i know it's a dream...but so was trading kwame for gasol...

Since there's no Camby thread yet, just want to point out how many so-called imparcial sportscasters and writers, namely those of the four letter network, have yet to jump all over this deal the same way they did on the Pau Gasol trade. Its still hot of the press so I'll give them some time, but they've now placed themselves in the position where they have to criticize any one-sided trade. Camby to the Clippers for a second round draft pick? And wheres the outcrys of conspiracy, those same people better be calling this a "steal" rather than a trade. And if they don't, it just goes to show how these people are biased against the Lakers. You know that, if the Lakers had acquired Camby for a second round pick, they would be all over it crying foul. So what's uneven? Uneven and lopsided is the nature of the reporting, not the trade.

Too expensive.
6.25 X 10^6 dollars/year for James Posey?
At last season's level of playing time, reg. season and playoffs combined (and for a title-winning squad, which should factor in a premium of some kind), Posey's new salary works out to $2,610.69 per minute!
Now, he may play more minutes this year, but will definately not win a championship.
We got dibbs on that.
Go Lakers

Mo Evans - no, you must be forgetting how this guy likes to jack up shots, even though he can't shoot... we got him for his defense, I didn't see much on defense from him when he was here.
David Harrison??? Oh hohohohohoooo... you think Kwame got crucified when he was here? At least Kwame could throw his body around, Harrison is just lazy... with the bad attitude to go with it.
Keyon Dooling? Dude wants too much money, he was "insulted" by the Magic offer. I say let him rot in Europe or Russia for a couple of years, then we'll see how "insulted" he is...

Elle,
"AK/BK, I am still waiting for either of you two answer my question about bass fishing's bad boy, that sentence still blows my mind. I'm *this* close to looking for that book on Amazon, *this* close."
The fisherman in question is Mike Iaconelli, a former Bassmaster Classic champ who is very over the top by the sport's genteel standards. He's tatted up, into hip hop, from New Jersey (as opposed to the typical Southern states) and kinda loud. But he's also very good. BK and I wrote an article about him for ESPN The Magazine about 4 years ago, and when he eventually got a book deal, he recommended us to write the book for him. It's in his "voice,:" but we did all the editing and interviewing.
So there you have it. Go buy the book. haha

Mighty Mo Evans is Andrew Bynum's best friend and I thought he did a good job while he was a Laker.
I'd love to see him back again in the Purple and Gold.
By the way, Sir Kwaminus, in all seriousness, what kind/size of contract do you think Kwame Brown is going to end up with?

I keep reading about how we should add this player and that player but there are only what "2" if that many, available spots on that roster..So the Lakers cannot conceivable just add any and everyone to the team and still address their NEEDs. Which to me, the needs are a backup PF (considering Ronny is ghost) and another athletic wing player...
I wished Sprew had his mind right and wanted to play again cuz I feel he could still be a productive player in this league!

Probably already mentioned, but the Nuggets can now apply the 10 million they saved in the Camby deal to any other trade they wish to make. For instance, they can trade a player making 2 million a year for a player making 12. I would think that they already have something lined up or nearly so.

AK / BK,
Thanx to their representation here, we have learned that the Boston fans have no idea how to win graciously. Or at least the Keltic fans, the Red Sox fans I konw are pretty decent folks. I wish it were more in my nature to be a hater, because the hater in our midst is making me wanna just deck the next person I see wearing green. But, I try to play the game with the same cool as Jack sitting sidecourt. So forgive my outburts in the future as I may sometimes blast the people we considered to be the Biggest Losers, despite their victory.
Oh and its good to be home again.

Richtown,
"My question about the camby trade is how did they make in the first place? Don't the salaries have to match to make that happen?"
The CBA rules allow a team over the cap to make a deal with another under the cap (as the Clippers are) without the salaries matching. This rarely happens, as most teams are above the cap and you obviously need to have the player that the team under the cap wants, likes the salary, etc. But the Nuggets desperately want to shed salary and the Clips needed someone to replace Brand, so this one came together. But again, this scenario is uncommon and shouldn't be counted on.

DanS ,
Let's Go C's is a multi poster here to have fun. Some people found him to slip as Butler, and another poster has confessed to be Butler. So all in all, you wouldn’t find him on a Celtics blog because he is here to poke fun at our beloved team. I know, I know. Hard to ignore. But just the gathered 411 here.
Question is: Pajaro Y Fuego, El Espanol que estas usando se llama "Modismo" no?
Posted by: Charles | July 16, 2008 at 03:07 PM
I thought that was why Mo Evans got traded in the first place. At least one radio show was talking about it. Mo Evans was a bad influence on Andrew Bynum so the Lakers moved him out of town... so... he ain't coming back anyway...
It's hard to say what Kwame will get. Big men always get more money, even if they suck. That being said... Kwame's rep has taken a beating and money is tight this year so he could go for as low as whatever the minimum exception is, $1.2m or something like that? If he goes for that low though, you know there's more to the story with the Lakers then as they should absolutely pick him up if he's that cheap. I mean... the guy already knows our system and as a backup, would be much better than what we have right now or whatever else we could pick up off waivers so... yeah, that would be very telling, especially if it's something like a 1 year, $1.2m contract, then YOU KNOW something's wrong...

Kwamus Brownus......David Harrison can catch the ball..Kwame could not....Kwame looked very lazy...Harrison has great size and the chemistry and drive of this Laker team could be just what he needs to progress..As for Mo Evans i dont think he was that bad for us....As for Dooling ...We dont know what Sasha wants yet..So its a little premature to be saying HE WANTS TO MUCH....If Sasha liked the offer he would have taken it ...Maybe he is insulted as well...

If both of you have paid attention to anything AK/BK have said regarding the trade, then you would understand that per NBA rules, teams that are under the salary cap can essentially trade nothing and get back a player's contract....so in this case the "nothing" was a second round pick and in turn the Clippers take back Camby's contract because they can afford it since they are under the cap
as far as ESPN goes, I don't really like them either but they did add on their headlines that this is going to save Denver over $40 MILLION in salaries/luxury taxes over the next two years...pretty smart business decision if you ask me....
Posted by: rob | July 16, 2008 at 03:19 PM
Posey to the Hornets...could be trouble, it all depends on how well Baby B keeps that group together. I think that they were the cinderella story last year from the begginning (Back in NO, possible relocation of the team, All-Star game highlighting Katrina, etc) until the Lakers swept into the number 1 WC spot. They also didn't play as well in the playoffs as I expected, although I was glad to have the road to the Finals lead through San Antonio, I'm always happy to see the Spurs suffer.
They could have quite a let down if they don't come in as hungry this year, especially Peja. We'll see if he can make it through another season injury free.
I wouldn't mind re-signing Mo Evans...if we lose Sasha, otherwise I just see another logjam at the 2 and 3 spots. Keyon Dooling is a joke..I don't think any Laker fan is like, 'ohmigod! Keyon Dooling is AVAILABLE!!!! NO WAY! He's, like, my all time favorite and stuff!'
OK, maybe Let's Go C's would be excited, but he just lives under a bridge and farts. Hey, maybe the Celtics could use a guy like Keyon Dooling to back up Rajon Rondo now that their mercenary core is departing for cash. I can see it now...
Doc Rivers: Keyon, get in there and play some defense.
Keyon Dooling: No prob, coach, hey, I might shoot the ball a couple of times.
DR: No problem as long as you move the ball into the post and get it back on the kick out.
Five minutes later...
DR: Keyon, you're man blew right by you and shot 6 pull up 3's in transition, what gives?
KD: Well coach, I was on fire in the lay-up line and I was hot during morning shoot-around.
DR: Uh-huh, so why didn't you stop you're man on D?
KD: Coach, I'm an offense first kind of guy, if MY guy scores than I have to put pressure on HIM by scoring.
DR: Right, have a seat, we're putting in Starbury.
KG: Oh man, he bailed on me in Minnesota and now he's gonna drag me down with him. That albatross.

That dude makes STIFF'S feel proud about their accomplishments! How could anybody rank Harrison over Kwame? Maybe Kwame can't catch the ball but Harrison doesn't know what to do with it once he does catch it. At least Kwame can body up guys on D, all Harrison does is fold over. Lumbering, plodding, slouching... no, no, no... we don't need one of THOSE guys... you know what I'm talking about? One of those, "I just do my job" guys that never improves, never takes ONE MINUTE to practice this shot or that shot to make himself more valuable, just kinda floats in the league a couple of years and then disappears... that's clearly all he's done so far and now he's too old to talk about "potential"... PLUS he failed a drug test earlier this year!!!

Giantsquid -
I was upset when Gerald Wallace and Steve Nash each accepted contracts around $10 million per, not because it wa too much, but because it was too little. Or Chauncey Billups accepting the midlevel exception (he's since been paid more). Or Caron Butler making around $7 million per year. So even though it's rare, it's possible to get upset over a player getting UNDERpaid.
In the case of Posey, thank God we didn't overpay like the Hornets did. He's not worth $25 mil over 4. Yikes. They're going to regret that contract.
