That explains a lot

July 15, 2008 | 10:06 am

I mentioned to a reader yesterday how I've asked around a bit in regards to Sasha Vujacic's situation and that oddly, nobody has heard a peep.  Well, turns out The Face just switched agents again, going back to Rob Pelinka (Kobe Bryant's guy, for those who don't know) after previously leaving him for Bill Duffy.  Not sure what prompted this or the other shake-ups, but there's a little known CBA ordinance stating that after five agent switches, you earn a free latte.*  Maybe this is just about a coffee jones.  At any rate, little news of deals coming in for a guy working out new representation makes sense, so there you (may) have it.

Also, Luke Walton is having surgery on Friday to remove bone spurs from his troublesome ankle.  He'll be out of commission for about a month, but this will hopefully alleviate the continual pain he dealt with throughout 2008.

* - I may or may not have made that factoid up.

UPDATE: An item of note from our friends at 710 ESPN, in support of the V Foundation (a very worthy cause):  As part of the station's V Foundation Cancer Auction on Wednesday afternoon and evening, there are a few purple and gold items up for bid, including four tickets to the Oct. 7 game vs. the Jazz (second row along the baseline), a Pau Gasol autographed jersey and an autographed basketball.  Some of the bidding is online, some can be done at the ESPN Zone in Anaheim. Click here for more information.

giantsquid,

Can you recommend a source where I can find out more information about p53's role in glucose uptake?

GO LAKERS!

I love the fact that there are musicians, martial artists, writers, scientists and philosophers on this blog passionately arguing about/discussing the Lakers.

Laker Nation fricken rocks!

GO LAKERS!

Jon K.

No offense, but the Heat takes our castoffs, we don't take the Clippers' castoffs.

Morning Guys,

All James Posey wants is 4 years at the mid level.

Since you guys were on the topic of philosophy; the philosopher I would like to compare the blog post's from yesterday as to Liu Ji. A strategist, philosopher that lead against the Mongol rebellion. Alchemist, astronomer blah blah blah... But he was forthright with his thoughts and learned to unlearn in serving in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasty...

Funny what your learn from a Junior College Chinese Art History course before you matriculate to a state school.

The Clippers have three centers now. How are they going to play Kaman and Camby together? Odd.

They should buyout Tim Thomas's contract and then drop Timmy Thomas from a jet without a parachutte over shark-infested waters.

Seriously, if they could somehow ditch Tim Thomas's contract and use that money to actually pick up some player who tries, they'd be a decent team.

Urgh.

Hate Tim Thomas.

Three years ago he beat both the Lakers and the Clippers in the playoffs.

And then he became a Clipper, and beat the Clippers through internal sabatoge.

The guy's a Cylon, just like Ron Bill Ron Ron d'Artest would be if he became a Laker.

It's important to know when to say simply, "No."

Go Clippers!

GO LAKERS!

Last summer, when the Lakers offered Kwame for Camby,
Denver just laughed at the deal and never called back.

By the way, I doubt that PJ would start Ariza even if
he gets better and becomes a clearly better player
than Walton & Vlad

[Here's an article I posted here last week about Jorge]

Pau Gasol’s interview from Spain regarding Garbarosa.
(Translated by MRF Marketing Services)

http://tinyurl.com/6cpvzm (Spanish) Translated into English below.

Title:
Pau Gasol: “I would love to have Garbajosa on Los Angeles”

Pau was not surprised to hear when we mentioned the Lakers interest of Garbajosa. “We’ve talked and clearly I would love to have him playing in Los Angeles, but its not my decision to make.”

We showed him a illustration of Jorge dressed as a Lakers. Pau smiled and laughed, then remarked with a joke, “Its very becoming of him.”

Pau has no problem justifying why he wants him on his side:”First, because he his my friend, someone I appreciate and have deep respect for, but more importantly, he would help us a lot. Jorge is a great player, he’s exceptional at reading the play and situation, is one of those rare players that makes everyone on his team better. It would be very good if we could include him as a player.”

The quality of Garbajosa, according to his opinion, is unquestionable:”He’s shown before his injury, that he can play at a good level on any NBA team.” Pau doesn’t believe his injury would prevent him from playing. “Its shown that he has recovered, he’s getting better day by day, it will take some time for him to get back to where he was. But I feel it should be no problem for him to get to where he was before.”

End of story.

Warburg was remarkably ahead of his time. For decades, little attention was paid to his hypothesis that the energy metabolism in cancerous cells is shifted away from aerobic respiration toward a heavy dependence on glycolysis. Its interesting that angiogenesis inhibitors, which were thought to possibly be major breakthroughs in the treatment of cancer, have been relatively ineffective; angiogenesis more or less involves developing a network of capillaries allow blood circulation within tumors so that cells in those tumors can obtain oxygen needed for aerobic (mitochondrial) respiration. Moreover, proteomic analyses (basically looking at what types of proteins, in what ratios, a cell contains) have indicated that there is a shift toward glycolysis in gliomas and breast carcinomas (probably in most solid tumors but I'd have to look that up). A lot of pharmaceutical research is now focused on developing anti-cancer drugs that target cells that depend primarily on glycosis for energy.

Okay, very, very late to the molecular genetics party...

But I spent about 2000 hours of upper division lab time studying MHC (Major Histocompatability Complex) expression in knock-out mice - doing reams of grunt work - patch-clamps, immunoradial diffusion set-ups, E.L.I.S.A., photographing lymphocytes fixed at metaphase, blah-blah-blah. Sweating my a$$ off in that lab for Dr.'s Murphy and Kleinheimer.

And then, when it was my turn to apply for ACCESS Program at UCLA, this Russian accented secretary type called about 6 weeks after my panel interview, and said "I'm terribly sorry, but I do not have good news for you..."

GRE breakdown: Analytical 99th %, Quantitative 96th, verbal 97th.

Jon K - A brief interview with Jorge.

http://tinyurl.com/5txkdf (spanish) Translated below.

Garbajosa: I feel very good inside that the Lakers want me to play for them next year.

“Especially after what happened to me last year, I’m excited for the opportunity to play again”

“I have to give the credit to my friend Pau Gasol. He was the one that spoke up for me to the Lakers. With out him it would not be possible”

The Raptors terminated his contract because of his leg injury feeling he couldn’t compete at the NBA level again.
The fact that the Lakers have offered him a contract has erased any doubt of that and he’s very grateful that this would remove the cloud hanging over him.
“This should shut up the talk from Toronto. I just want to enjoy playing again”

He will have no problem being released from his obligations here.

John in Houston,

i think Phil will try starting LO in camp and preseason. If LO hits his outside jumpers and spreads the floor for Bynum and Gasol, then he remains the starter.
If he's hesitant and inconsistent with the jumper, i think Phil tries Ariza as the starter.
I know a lot of people will say that "he's overpaid to be a bench player." But, Manu Ginobli makes close to LO and Pop has used him off the bench with incredible results.

I think LO is the type of player who could excel off the bench. Let him sit over there for seven or eight minutes and get a feel for what the team needs. Then get in there and bring your game. LO will be able to be himself, especially with the shooters that will follow him off the bench to help spread the floor.

I don't mind as all sides are being civil. So debate to hearts content. Just my humble position.

Coolhair,

Trevor started a few games for us last year.
He's a better rebounder than Luke and Rad combined (especially on the offensive end). He's an improving shooter, and already comparable to Luke with the jumper (if not better). He's 20 times more capable on the defensive end than both Luke and Rad.

I can't say one way or another whether or not Phil would start him. one thing i've learned is to not try and figure out what Phil will do. But, if LO can't do his thing with the starting crew, why not start Ariza?
LO can certainly do his thing with the Bench Mob.

Jon K,

>>>3. The Clippers have so much minor talent that they're
>>>not resigning (Quinton Ross, James Singleton, Shaun
>>> Livingston, Paul Davis). The Lakers should take
>>>advantage of that.

I agree with you there. I wouldn't put them first priority, but
once the Sasha and Ronny deals are wrapped up one way
or the other, and if it becomes clear they can't get any higher
profile guy (e.g. Posey), then if I was Mitch, at very least
I'd be bringing in Livingston for a workout, and I might have
a look at all four of those guys.

>>>How did the Clips land Camby?
>>>
>>>Like we don't need a tough-minded defensive specialist
>>>on our team?

Yeah, but the Lakers didn't have 10 million dollars worth of
cap space to trade away.

Jon K

Missed your question about glucose and p53.

I don't know of any source material on this other than articles published in scientific journals. Not sure you'd be interested in those.

Yeah, Fatty, but what about his calves?

Benjamin,

>>>>No offense, but the Heat takes our castoffs, we don't
>>>>take the Clippers' castoffs.

Yeah! Yeah! No more of this Byron Scott for Norm Nixon trade
malarkey. We need Nixon, not some rookie.

Oh, and Lamar Odom was also a Clippers' castoff. If I had to
I could probably do some digging and find a few other Lakers
who were once Clippers.

giantsquid,

So where can I find information on p53's role in glucose uptake?

GO LAKERS!

Fatty,

How's Jorge's defense?

GO LAKERS!

Jon K - And yet there's more.

This is the Draft Express take. They were very impressed with him but had concerns about his adapting in the NBA. His first year, showed he could play well as Pau said, plus he was selected to the NBA First Team All Rookie.

Love his nick name. 'The Porn Player' Because its obscene what he does to other teams. How do you not like a guy with that name? Dr Buss must have dropped his jaw when he heard that.

http://tinyurl.com/5fqpdu

coolhair,

>>>By the way, I doubt that PJ would start Ariza even if
>>>he gets better and becomes a clearly better player
>>>than Walton & Vlad

I cordially disagree. By the middle of last season, Phil was
already using Ariza as a stopper in certain situations. If Trevor
would start the season off hitting 40% of his 3-pointers, he'd
be in the starting lineup faster than you could say Lukomir
Waltmanovic... Unless Lamar was also shooting over 40%
of his 3's, in which case, he'd be the starting 3, but Ariza
would be getting bigger minutes than Luke or Vlade.

Garbajosa, pre-injury, was one of the more underrated players in the league. When he was on the floor, he dramatically improved the Raptor defense. He's a tough, smart dude and makes very few mistakes on either end of the floor. On the flip side, he's not very fast, can't score down low and messed up his ankle pretty bad, so it's not all good with him, but if he's healthy, he'd be a valuable bench player, no doubt about it. I'd love to see him in a Laker uni and if we picked him up, I'd be very impressed with the Laker F.O. for thinking outside the box on how to address defensive issues.

Dang Exhelodrv!

How could I have missed that? I know Ronnie Lester always carries the Calve-O-Meter with him to measure Bio-Mass when he is scouting potential Lakers. It has to be listed somewhere in his stats. I will keep looking.

giantsquid,

{Laker Nation, sorry for the aside. This is important.}

Actually, I would be interested in scientific articles.

I mean, is p53 the primary mediating factor in glucose uptake?

GO LAKERS!

Fatty,

"The Porn Player."

I am officially intrigued.

GO LAKERS!

P53 & Glucose uptake,
Sorry to "let's go c's", who has been quiet for a whie (for him)...he's still trying to figure out how to spell "GED", which is what he was aiming for....but came up short...don't worry, just do some reading and rejoin this topic, even as an observer in say 120 years, in which time your c's will have won maybe 4 more titles......

I agree 100%. LO could be our Manu.
Where in NorCal do you live, Benny?

Tom

Previously I have advocated Luke taking a voluntary cut in salary to enable the Lakers to buy quality players. To sweeten the pot, I suggested we use some of the savings to pay refs to call fouls away from the ball when Luke turns it over or misses a lay up.

P & GR has expanded my vision. Perhaps Luke could actually retire. We could makehim the assistant to the assistant coach. And we could use the some of the savings to get David Stern to vote him MVP of the regular season.

This way, the entire league would have a white poster child to show the viewers. Also, this would make it obvious that the league is corrupt. Remember, the fans know that you have to hit rock bottom before you admit you have a problem.

This would make great drama and it would get ride of Luke.

I spent a year in a Comprehensive Health Management masters program in UCLA while trying to get into medical school as a 30-year old student. I had a 3.9 GPA and 98% on my MCATs and applied to 17 medical schools. I received one interview (from NYU where I had spent a year in law school) and zero offers of admission so I know exactly how you feel. And Jilted Cheese is a perfect description. Jon K.,

Kobe would be Nietzsche. He is the uber mensch, the superman, who does not give a green can of beans what you think.

I think he should get a "whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger" tatoo. That and a big moustache would seal the deal.

GOOOoooOOOO LAKERS!!!!

Fatty,

That needed to be repeated, Fatty (damn, every time I type Fatty, it comes up on the screen as Farty. LOL. That ever happen to you?).

Garbo would be a better catch than trading for Artest or gambling on 3-years of Posey at the full MLE. I would even spend part of the MLE if we needed to. Stand pat and bring in Garbo to replace Ronny. I agree that that’s the SMART move.

Tom

Elle,

Bravo, Elle. For a guy who only cares about being right, I’ve never seen a guy who is more consistently wrong. I also noticed that most of the bloggers who want us to add a bully to the team to stand up to Boston have that same attitude on the blog.

Comparing Kwame Brown to Pau Gasol. Only a proven idiot would support Brown. LOL. Expect Mike T to come out of the closet and explain the truth about his love for Kwame before retiring again to obscurity. There’s more to prison than just the bars.

Tom

Johnny P - Nietzche? I'll go for the early version, but I just don't want Kobe suffering the same fate at the end of his career as Nietzche did.

P&GR -

Thank you for your kind words - I do appreciate them! Your last post was full of insights and touched on the fiber that seems to bring us all together; we want our team to do well and want to see some passion in them in the upcoming season. Your last post was pretty much pure molten gold, which was then allowed to harden and was triple-dipped in platinum.

I love this blog!

Let's Go Lake Show!

JohnnyP,

So are you saying that Kobe's going to die alone in an insane asylum driven mad from syphillis?

GO LAKERS!

Benny Blanca and LTLF

Don't get me wrong.
I LOVE the idea of Ariza starting at 3.
And I think he'd be a better starting SF than LO.

It's just that PJ really looks like he favors some
underachieving players (Kwame, Luke).
I was just worried that PJ could play Luke more than Ariza
even if Ariza is better than him.

This specific blog is/was a classic. Let's send it to Baastuuun, and I can watch them wiping the mustard out of their stupid mustaches and rubbing their eyes by mistake trying to figure out what is transpiring (careful, using the word "genetics" around Celtic fans, they'll think it's a reference to one's genitalia, Well, at least they'll be in the general area. Posey off the market, good in way. We don't have to tie up our salary structure for one hired gun, who unlike Dirty Harry, he's out of bullets. Problem, the Hornets may be for real, Maybe by that time it'll be time for "Byron, come home!!!" Turiaf will be missed, but will be replaced. It's a business decision again, and he's going to dread the move eventually. He'll fall out of the Warriors plan (you know, the one they don't have), Sasha, come on home, if you do, we'll let you shoot from 35 feet out like Kobe does, but you better stay within a few %pts of Kobe on those shots. Camby to the Clippers???? They got a nice player, who will help them, unfortunately, they need to go the post office and notify them that they are going to change their mailing address to the Honda Center. For all the money that Sterling has, wouldn't you think his ads for his Wilshire corridor properties would look more appealing than subsidized housing, but hey, who am I to criticize, after all, he has all the money, I don't. How about this, since the Warriors are called the "GOLDEN STATE" Warriors, how about if the Clippers change their name to the Anaheim Clippers of Los Angeles, and we evict them and relocate them to the Honda Center. Anything seem possible now after all with Clay Bennett stepping in then moving the team to that great city known for.....forget, I won't go there. That picture of Bennet in Hoops Hype makes him even uglier than Kevin McHale. Taking a franchise with great history, spirit, character and fans and trucking them to OKC, (should not have been allowed but was allowed...by who(m)??????) So the Sonics (well Bennett, at least) voluntarily move to OKC, can't we just force the Clippers to move out of Staples...and into Orange County!!!!!!!! The Arrowhead Center will need modifications, as it is getting dated. I guess the Brand/Clipper jerseys will be on the rack next to the Smushie/Laker jerseys I saw a few months ago at a FootAction in ORANGE COUNTY....... Someone tell Sterling that they don't really grow oranges in Orange County anymore, tell them there are alot of buildings for sale!!!!!! (and to sell).....

Ok so no BILLBILL????? (still praying), No Posey!!!!!, We may have an abundance of tall forwards who can shoot (in theory)..... Sun Yue will shock you, if given the leash that sasha was and if used properly, he will make a healthy Livingingston look really bad, even with the 100 or so games he's already played, if he comes back healthy, hopefully he will, he seemed like a good person. Sun doesn't have any super physical skills, He's not a power player like Yi has shown at times, but he seems to have that instinct that you can't teach. Where will Kwame resurface, Mike T?......any clues?????? And for how much....

No big roster moves....so everyone, please up your defense and we'll be there....

Mitch, what do you have for us....are you going to keep doing the Steve Jobs thing on us...." Oh, and one more thing...."

Lakers as they are, Odom for life, we don't want Marion, his jumper is too ugly....I don't care about the percentages on that oone.

Let's go C's, is Subway using tomatoes again? I'm sure you're exhausted from having to keep explaining to the customers at the store where you earn minimum wage.. What are you guys doing, offering triple bacon???? That way your customers can look like the c's......Oh, you better remind your team, to preorder bigger rings for each player, because they're going to keep growing sideways....You guys are going to have to request a larger chater jet for your flights, Is the Boston whatever arena located over the big dig???? If so better check often for stress cracks.

Jon K

"I'd like to start the "RETIRE KWAME BROWN'S JERSEY" Bandwagon."

How about Luke Walton for early retirement? Many will go for it! For sure! We can still use Kwame to guard Garnett, we can not say about Luke guarding Paul Pierce, can we?

Posted by: Staples 24 | July 15, 2008 at 09:38 PM

I say yes retire his jersey and hang in in the rafters with one condition. That he is wearing it at the time they hang it!

I cordially disagree. By the middle of last season, Phil was

I disagree since Luke was no better than a 10th or 11th spot player last year. PJ used him as 6th player giving him so much playing time even if he hurt the team. Now I think PJ will use the surgery as excuse to play him more since injury was reason for poor play. Now with surgery LW will play great so put him in for more minutes.
