Bill Bill now pays himself 5%

July 13, 2008 |  7:55 pm

Ron Artest has always acted like a split personality kinda guy, so I guess it's only fitting that he add "Agent/Athlete" to his Jekyll/Hyde resume.  Artest has announced that he's seeking a trade out of Sacto, and that he'll be negotiating on his own behalf for the near future.  Which, of course, takes us back to the Lakers, rumored to be in the mix, but according to ESPN's Marc Stein, reluctant to give up Lamar Odom (conflicting with previous reports that the Lakers were offering up LO.  Gotta love the rumor mill).  Like the Sacto Bee's Sam Amick, Stein also sees Ronny Turiaf's situation as a potential indicator of an Artest deal down the road.

By the way, check out the following paragraph.  Am I crazy, or is this Artest saying that had the Knicks not have fired Isiah Thomas, he'd have either opted out and signed with New York or have tried to arrange a sign and trade there?  Or is it just Ron Ron/Bill Bill babbling his usual stream of consciousness?

"In a way I wish this [coming 2008-09 season] would have been [Theus'] first year and [Adelman] would have left this summer, because it could have showed how much [of] a winner I am. Guys like Rick Adelman and Rick Carlisle [brought] that out of me. Isiah [Thomas] was going to bring that out of me if he didn't get fired [by the Knicks]. A coach like Phil Jackson can bring that out me."

Very odd.  But he does mention PJ as the ideal coach, a hardly subtle indication of where he wouldn't mind going.

All Artest jokes aside, it does sometimes strike me as strange that so many athletes even have agents.  If you know your market value and can negotiate without being difficult, I'm not even sure what point the agent serves, aside from taking your dough.  You definitely need a lawyer, but an agent?  Just something I've always found curious.

Ugh Rill Rill is nuts and it looks from his statement like he wants to join the lakers. Please god don't let this be true, we have had more than enough drama in past seasons, please keep Rill Rill away from here or if he does come can you lead him to a good doctor that can give him meds to keep all the personalities in check?

If the Lakers are not willing to give up Odom then Vlad,Mihm and Sasha could be in the gun...(LUKE)..cough cough....Maybe.....I hate having to wait ....Sort it out Mitch, this cant be good for the hearts of the members of the LATimes blog....Come on Mitch.....Its Yay or Nay....

this is getting pretty weird. at this point, whatever happens, happens. we can win it with odom. i do think we should make a push for posey if we don't get artest.

posey can defend and i think we can ironically put posey on pierce if we can't get artest. we need a defender to complement bynum. ariza can defend, but not sure if he can develop a three point shot over the summer to contribute at the other end.

well there's the whole..."my jerk is an agent, and I'm not" part of the business.

Just look at By's agent. Jerk.

Of course the players need agents. Its like having a bad boy in bass fishing. There really are some things you just can't do without.

I'm conflicted about Ron. On one hand, he's one of the most talented dudes in the league. On the other, he's one of the craziest dudes in the league.

How can Artest not be the perfect fit into this whole Laker scenerio and their softness??? Geez, get rid of the softies and add some "toughness, madness, and BALLS" to this Laker team. Just imagine if Artest had been with the Lakers when they played the Celtics, I'm pretty sure he would have stirred up some tempers on the Celtic side, especially Garnett. Those 2 would have gone at it almost every possession. They NEED Artest or at least someone that's not afraid to toughen up and show that he does indeed have a pair, unlike Odom.

If RonRon can help us WinWin, then I'm all foritforit.

Hey I love Ron Artest because he is crazy. For all you that know Artest as the guy who has hard flagrant fouls, has a short temper, jumped into the stands in Detriot...did you know that he has a MATH degree from St. John's? I read somewhere that he wanted to really become an architect, but he couldnt pass up on basketball. Thats a crazy genious for you.

Anyways, this is tough for the Lakers, since Turiaf just signed an offer sheet with GS. If you do trade Odom away for Artest, you are left with 4 small forwards on the roster. Artest, Luke Walton, Radmanavic, Trevor Ariza. At PF, you would only have Pau Gasol, (assuming Bynum is nice and healthy). The Lakers would go from having tons of bigs to only have Drew and Bynum.

Essentially this becomes the Lakers rotation

PG Fisher, Farmar
SG Kobe, Sasha
SF Artest, Ariza, Luke
PF Gasol, Radmanavic
C Bynum

This to me makes the Lakers thin up front. Dont expect anything from Kenny Thomas, the guy added in the deal for it work.

As much as we groaned sometimes with Odom, he makes the Lakers lineup much more versatile, especially when injuries arise which is no doubt going to happen.

Can the Lakers find a way to parlay Radmanavic and say perhaps Sun Yue for a solid big? Unfortunately, there's not a lot of big talent out there right now.

Also one other important thing to note, Artest coming is also somewhat of a one year rental. If you trade Odom's big expiring contract, is Artest the best we can get? Artest will be looking for a big extension next summer and could easily walk.

I would love to see artest in a lakers uniform. As much as a respect LO, on he floor he is one of the most frustrating players ive ever watched. While, ive never watched artest for a whole season, every time i see him he plays hard and tough. Additionally, he happens to play the one position in which the lakers are the weakest.

The concerns about artest as a teammate are unfounded as i can recall very few incidents in which he had rifts with a teammate. I wouldnt worry about him being a distraction, the lakers have proven that they are capable of playing through most distractions. Kobe would love playing with artest, who is crazy intense.

Trading LO for Artest and Kenny Thomas would be a HUGE mistake. Losing Turiaf and Odom while replacing them with Artest and the stiff named Thomas would kill us on the glass. Please Mitch - Don't do it! What we need is a quality PF via the MLE - Kurt Thomas- if you are still available, please give us a call.

I do like RA to fill the 3 spot. He is a better suit for a defensive 3. I prefer letting RA shoot midrange jumper than LO.

The only bad side in this whole trade scenario is that Artest is a walking time bomb who will explode any minute. It may caused trouble for the Lakers' chemistry.

I prefer having LO till Feb. and try experimenting the 3 towers combo. If LO will improve his midrange, it will be good for us Laker fans. But on the otherside if we will win O`Brein next year, it means LO will be a 10M++++ guy which I dont like to see...

If only Mitch can do another Gasol magical trade to Artest that doest involved LO. :)

Agents are also the ones that usually hold their players back...like don't do that, you'll come off crazy. Guess Artest needs an agent haha.

Then there are those that line up the babes for you. That's just wrong.

if only we could get artest with out losing LO!!!

how guys how??? im torn as to who is easier to give up. pau or lo. neither would be preferable but if you had to choose, who?

Yeah AK, you and me both. Have wondered it for years. I think Ray Allen handles his own contracts and I believe Lebron fired his Agent last year, but for the most part, it seems stupid, especially with the structure of the NBA contracts. I can see if maybe the guy is good at landing endorsement deals, pay the commission for that, but negotiating your NBA contract, like you said, a lawyer should do the trick.

If the Lakers were able to trade for Ron Artest and not let go of Lamar Odumdum at the same time, I would like to wonder how that line up would work out. To have Bynum, Gasol, Odumdum, Artest and Kobe on the floor at the same time.

Basically, for this trade to work out, we would need to let go of Lamar Odumdum just for our line up to balance out. But also, if we can add James Posey to the line up, that would make our team tougher to play againts. We would lose the softy reputation and our bench would be stronger.

Our 2008-09 starting line-up

PG: Fisher
SG: Kobe
SF: Artest
PF: Gasol
C: Bynum

Our 2008-09 Bench

6. Walton
7. Ariza
8. Farmar
9. Sasha
10. Posey
11. Mihm
12. Radmanovich

Faith,

Dont you just have to feel sad for an NBA player that has to have his agent get him girls? LOL....

That man is KRAZY! Why would we want that guy on our team again?

I guess Artest may have really been unhappy with how his agent handled the trade deadline. Was his agent trying to guarantee the last year of the Sac salary so he could get a bigger cut? If so, just... interesting.

Artest is a lot of things, but I'm not sure how well he can represent his interests as his own agent.

The guy really does need his own reality show, that is, unless he comes to LA, gets what he wants with championships and rap albums on the side, is happy, and gets more stability as a result.

AK,

I'd take his comments about playing for the Knicks as stream of consciousness and homesickness. He says a lot of things and is distractable, but when he only mentions one distraction once and others many more times, I think we can use that as an indicator of his interest.

So, I have a question.

Given how entertaining Artest has been and he isn't even on the Lakers team nor has he been a major opponent of ours, how could we not want him?

We'll always have something about which to talk!

The Lake Show,

You realize you're describing a roster with only 11 players instead of 15 with no Turiaf, Thomas, Abdur-Rahim, or Garbarosa?

Vlad will not be our 2nd string power forward except in case of injury, maybe 2 of them.

And yes, that would be a disaster.

An established superstar does not need an agent.

Rookies and journeymen might need agents.

Will Smith and Tom Cruise don't need agents, but I suspect they keep them around out of loyalty.

Artest is going to be his own agent, hahahahahaha! That's spectacular. That's going to make any potential trade a whole lot thornier and to AK and anyone else who thinks agents aren't necessary, you're just plain wrong, period. I'm not defending any agent in particular, and like any profession, there's good ones and bad ones. But, get rid of all the agents and you'd see players getting screwed royally.

Coby Karl is seizing the moment in Vegas with second consecutive top scorer and all around player. Today, the team improved compared to their game against Rodney Stuckey. Hey, Coby has guarded Affalo, Stuckey and today J-Critt and OJ Mayo. Now I'm second guessing PJ, if he used Coby Karl during the Finals, perhaps Lakers had the chance on Game 2. Here is the score of the Summer Pro League and make your own analysis:

http://www.nba.com/summerleague2008/games/boxscore.jsp?gameId=1520800011

What is the deal with Sasha at this time? No rumors, no chatters and offers from any other team. I thought the Spurs wanted to sign him for MLE.

I have no loyalty when it comes to my money. I remember the guy who represented Lebron after he was fired, said something about loyalty and feeling betrayed and talked about all the $100+ million he made for Lebron. I dont know exact numbers, but if the percentage commission he made was only 2% and expect it was higher, than during your time together, Lebron let you make $2+ mil off his talents, I think that makes us pretty even if I am Lebron.

I hate to say this and myabe I am the only who feels this way, but whoever gives James Posey the full mid-level for 4+ years is crazy. I wouldnt want him. I am not a fan of guys who take the regular season off. And I think he plays best as like the 8th man, you dont pay those guys mid-level money. He's pretty good, but I think there has to be a different move to made than a play for Posey. It would cost too much for too long for a guy who is too old. Not to play, but to give a four or five year contract.

I go with TinidorS analysis, we both need Artest and LO, only if we can afford them.

Basically, that's the root of the problem why Artest dismissed his agent. He convinced him that by not opting out his value increases by spending one more year with Sacramento. He does not want to be locked up at 6M per year for 5 years. That's confidence from a talented player, he wants to risk for higher stakes and higher risks. Unfortunately, as soon as GM Petrie learned Bill's decision, he sent a message that they would not wait for a year but find a suitable market for him. Artest was discouraged by that response b/c he has no control on the team where he will be traded, and if it will be the Lakers it will drag his good friend, Lamar. IMO, I like Lamar if there was only choice, I would offer Vlad+Luke+Chris Mihm, well life in NBA does not work that way. You've got to evaluate values, talents and budget tailored to team's objective.

Artest come to LA!

We need someone who can spell and play Defense. You want to watch a comedy show watch Vlade and Luke play D.

Since PJ doesn't believe in Defense we better find players who can play it.

I am sick of the Triangle Offense sure would be nice to see Lakers play some D once in awhile.

If the McGoofs are really willing to take Odom how is this trade not done yet?

4 years of Odom is enough!!! I can't take it anymore.
He will always let you down at crunch time, he is a mental midget. We all know that. Admit it.

Artest will be a LAKER!

BD

Naija,

What do you mean you don't like role players who take the regular season off? What about our beloved Robert Horry? lol

Benjamin,

If you noticed I said "rotation" not roster. The Lakers still have no cap space, whether or not they make the trade. So therefore you have to look at the Lakers roster after such a trade as being the actual line up. Those will be top 11 players who actually play, because 12-15 will be minimum wage guys, perhaps Mbenga, Coby Karl again at best. Kenny Thomas is so often injured that I wouldnt count him being active either.

And Im not sure what Abdul Rahim will do for you, same thing for Garbajosa. Im not sure you want a 6"9 30 year old Spanish center on the team to add toughness.

If the Lakers trade for Ron Artest, they HAVE to get a guy like Kurt Thomas but that's no guarentee.

Unless we retai Ronny or land kurt Thomas. I really do not see us trading L.O unless there is a quality back up PF in the deal. Having say, Kenny Thomas as your back up PF is just to risky.

A couple of ideas for those of you who don't like the idea of seeing
RonBill-RonBill in Purple and gold:

----------------

Lakers send Odom and Mihm to Sacramento
Sacramento sends Artest to Detroit
Sacramento sends Kenny Thomas to the Lakers
Detroit sends Tayshaun Prince to the Lakers

Tay isn't quite as talented offensively as Artest, but he is
a very good defender and he isn't a head case.

----------------

Or how `bout this...

Lakers send Odom and Mihm to Sacramento
Sacramento sends Ron Artest to Houston
Sacramento sends Kenny Thomas to the Lakers
Houston sends Shane Battier to the Lakers

Similar situation - Battier isn't as offensively talented as
Artest, but an excellent defender and not a head case.

The thing I don't like about the trade is that it would actually
improve conference rival Houston more than it would help
the Lakers

---

Lakers send Odom and Mihm to Sacramento
Sacramento sends Ron Artest to Charlotte
Sacramento sends Kenny Thomas to the Lakers
Charlotte sends Gerald Wallace to the Lakers

Wallace would be awesome, but I don't think Artest would
go for the deal - with Detroit or Houston, he'd be going to
a contender, with Charlotte, not so much. He could poison
the deal by telling Charlotte that he wouldn't re-sign if they
traded for him.

So where does Ron-Ron really want to go???

---

Start spreadin' the newwwwwws
Ron's leavin todayyyyyy
He wants to be a part of it, New York New Yorrrrrrrrk.

I think I'll make this one ridonculously big...

Lakers send Odom and Mihm to Sacramento
Lakers send Radmanovic to New York.

Sacramento sends Artest and Kenny Thomas to New York

New York sends Malik Rose, Renaldo Balkman, and
their choice of Jerome James or Jared Jeffries to the
Lakers
New York sends Mardy Collins to the Kings

New York sends David Lee to Memphis

Memphis sends Javaris Crittenton and their own 2010 first
round pick to the Lakers.

I told you it would be ridonculous. But in strange ways
it makes sense.

Lakers don't really get back anything good enough to justify
giving up Lamar -- that is the single biggest problem with the
trade. But...

Sacto gets Odom and gets to dump Thomas' contract, just
like they wanted. They also get a young cheap backup
PG (Collins) in the deal.

New York gets Artest, who they want reaaaaalllly bad.
They also get to dump off a couple of players they don't
use much in Malik Rose and either Jerome James or Jared
Jeffries. The big costs are David Lee and Renaldo Balkman,
but I bet they'd give them up in a hot minute for Artest.
Knicks also get Radmanovic. Considering they didn't have
a single player on their roster who shot as much as 40%
on 3-pointers the last couple of seasons, and since Jeffries
contract is identical to Rad's, it's not unreasonable to assume
they'd be willing to do that. None of the other contracts they
take on go past 2010, so they'd still have cap space to add
LeBronBron to RonRon.

Memphis gets David Lee. They have their young starting
PG (Mike Conley), SG (OJ Mayo), SF (Rudy Gay), and even
C (Marc Gasol). Lee is one of the top young PF's, and all
they'd have to give is two low first round guys (Critter and
Arthur) and one first round pick.

So what do the Lakers get out of the deal?
Nothing as good as Artest, but...

1. Renaldo Balkman - Imagine Ronny Turiaf as a SF. That
is Balkman

2. Two big bruisers to give strength & depth in the front
court - Rose & James.

3. We get Critter back. yay! Some people here keep saying
he'll be better than Farmar, so they'd be getting the PG of the
future back.

4. Darell Arthur - young talented PF who slipped in the draft
because of a rumor about creatine in his urinalysis that
turned out to be false. Should have been a lottery pick.

5. Both Critter and Arthur are on rookie contracts, so they'd
be inexpensive bench players for several years. This would
be nice to balance out the huge contracts of Kobe, Gasol,
and Bynum and the middling contracts of Farmar, Ariza,
Walton, and Fisher.

6. Less salary - believe it or not, this trade would fill out the
Lakers roster while dropping their salaries by almost 3 million.

Okay, so obviously none of that makes up for Lamar, and
there's no way in hell the Lakers would do that trade, even
if New York threw in their first round pick for next year.

The Detroit trade seemed interesting though.

Agent Zero weighs in on a possible Artest trade and talks about the Lakers while in Spain (some excerpts from the interview)

Arenas: “The Lakers can forge another dynasty thanks to Gasol”
By DIDAC PIFERRER ·

Barcelona. Gilbert Arenas, is in Barcelona to promote the Tour European of the NBA. Their team, the Washington Wizards, will be playing the Hornets October 17 in Barcelona. ‘Agent 0′ was lavish in his praise toward Pau Gasol, the Spanish selection and also José Manuel Cauldron, to which he criticized some months ago.

Would it be good for the Lakers to trade Lamar Odom for Ron Artest, as is being rumored? I believe definitely not. I like a lot the Lakers chemistry and I think that would not be good to mess with it. You need a deep team to win it all.

Would it be right to say, they will fight again for the ring? Yes. And in this aspect the arrival of Gasol has been key. It is very rare a player that can arrive in the middle of the season and do so well. I think that with him, the team can forge together another dynasty, and win in the NBA as they did some years ago.

And on top of that they have Kobe.

Is he the new Jordan? He’s been doing well since he has the off court problems behind him. I feel now, he is the best player of our time. (or era)

What does he think of Pau Gasol? Pau is the best European player in the NBA. He scores about 20 a game. His problem was that he was in a small market. He was in Memphis… and nobody sees the games of Memphis. Except, ¡only you in Spain! (Laughs).

AK,

An agent is like a buffer. You want so-and-so to appear at your charity event? Call their agent. It's not just about negotiating contracts, it's about providing a buffer between you and the rest of the world so that you can lead a somewhat normal life, and leaving the Agent to filter and let only the worthwhile communique through to their clients.

Looks like RonRon or should I say BillBill is really having a change of hear lately. Well there's no one else to blame for this but himself. Crazy dude really :-)

In the ESPN headlines, "Artest hopes for trade from Kings, will act as own agent"

AK,
"I'm not even sure what point the agent serves"

I would think that negotiating with teams don't require as an agent as much as endorsements

Trade for Artest

Now the news is that the Lakers are reluctant to include Odom in a trade for Artest. This is probably just a negotiating stance, to try to get out of taking Kenny Thomas or Abdur Rahim. They say Friday will be the soonest anything will be announced.

If LA gets Artest, I would consider a great offseason. It gives us the defense and the toughness we need to go against the physical teams in the East.

It does leave us a bit weak in the bigs though, with Turiaf and Odom leaving. So might have to sign another big too, like Kurt Thomas.

John

Lets trade Walton and Vlade for Ron Artest iam sure the Maloof brothers will leap at this great deal.Comments like this only denegrates this blog as a respectable source of information.

Ron Artest = Mental Health Patient

Ron Artest = Locker Room Poison

Ron Artest = Unfocused

Ron Artest = The wrong kind of Entertaining

Ron Artest = Not worthy to wear the Purple and Gold

Ron Artest = The crazy hot stripper you meet at the club with father issues and a drug problem who is fun to bang that night but you would NEVER consider having a long term relationship with

We will regret having anything to do with this guy.

Artest never heard the old adage:

"He who represents himself has a fool for a client"

I can't believe that a lot of people are all gung-ho about bringing Ron Artest onto this team.

Does anyone pay attention to basketball?

Anyone?

Has anyone paid attention to Artest's career?

The guy is a distracting lunatic. Urgh.

I think I'm going to stay away from this blog for a bit. All this trade talk is stressing me out.

GO LAKERS!

Isiah Thomas would have brought out the best in Ron Ron/Bill Bill?

Give me a break!

This lunatic's judgement and perception is clearly distorted. Please, please stop clamoring for an Artest trade.

Please.

GO LAKERS!

Lakers beat Memphis in Summer League!

Sign Coby Karl!

Don't sign Ron "Isiah Thomas is a Great Coach" Artest.

GO LAKERS!

I agree with your post one hundered percent..........

We already have a Space Cadet, we do not need to bring in anyone as distracitng and as sure to implode as whatever Testes wants to call himself.

Stand pat, Mitch..........let's see what this team can do as it is.

Everyone, please, repeat after me...........JUST SAY NO TO TESTES!

Unfair analysis of Big Shot Bob. He didnt take the regular season off as a Laker or as a Rocket. And it is my believe that SA played him that way intentionally hoping to have as much of his old legs as possible during playoff runs and it seems to have worked. And Bob also doesnt make the mid-level. And Bob shows up before the Finals. I was at the game in ATL, game 3 when Atlanta beat Boston, Posey seemed to be just out there to me, going thru the motions. I guess I am just not a fan.
