Great expectations
PROGRAMMING NOTE: Join us for Purple, Gold, and Blue at 11 am. We'll be talking Lakers-Celtics Finals with our guests, David Neiman of SportsHubLA.com and Gary Dzen of the Boston Globe Celtics Blog. Click on the show widget at the side of the page, or go straight to our show window by clicking here.)
The world sits in bated anticipation until the ballyhooed Lakers-Celtics showdown finally arrives. What to anticipate when the sparks finally fly? Try some physical round ball, which may not be the Lakers' bread and butter, but when need be, they've been willing to make a meal of it. One can also count on a serious vibe permeating through the Laker locker room, stolid enough to turn a shlock film like "Judgment Night" into a theoretical learning experience. It's also a safe bet that The Logo-endorsed Kobe Bryant will take his game to another level. After all, when you consider everything Kobe's been through, both during this season and the course of his career, do you really expect him to let up with such an opportunity staring him down? One could make the argument that ghostly spirits will look to sabotage Phil Jackson's quest for ring #10.
From there, the givens become harder to prognosticate. The Laker vets may have faith in the bench Mob, but their inexperience remains something of a question mark until shown otherwise. There's also the presence of Vlad Radmanovic, which means not quite knowing what to anticipate at all. And finally, there's the final outcome, which most "experts" seem to think will emerge a purple and gold delight. Some local scribes like it in 7. Others are even going with a more optimistic 5. Despite the matchups seemingly in favor of the Lakers (no matter who's slicing them up), there are a few analysts willing to take the Celtics.
Boston-bred Bill Simmons attempts to remain objective in analyzing this rivalry. He comes up a bit short. Then again, animosities stretching this far back often die awfully hard. Those who actually lived it -- and especially the ones who helped crank it to another level -- know the emotions might feel a foreign to the newest generation, but as they're confident to remind, give it time.
Celts blog Green Bandwagon provided SportsHubLA.com with some tips on how to beat (and lose to) the team they endorse.
All-time great Lakers vs. all-time great Celtics. And.... go!

SBPimp,
I really enjoyed your post.

Eric M - he said internet, not Web. The Web is part of the internet, but far from the only part of it. For instance - Usenet was very active years before 1986.
If you don't know what you're talking about, don't accuse others of BS.

LTLF,
Gore was not as serious with that 11th commandment creation.
Also, I recall my uncle's involvement with Tel Netting when he was talking to me about getting into the IT world in the mid 90's. (Prefacing the 1.0 boom of the online combustion)
What were you doing then with the internet? Curious.

Celtics` window of opportunity is huge.
Ray Ray comes off the books in two years, then we sign LeBron James to join the two-time defending champs!
Lakers actually dumb enough to think Rad can "handle" The Truth? LOL!!!

Edwin,
I see the benches being really key in this series. I think the one thing to point out about the benches is that Phil really has trust in his second unit, and Doc really throws them a short leash and does not let them play through stretches. This will lead to the C’s starters not having a great wind at the end of the game. In reading articles today, I really think KG will gas himself by the end of the game leaving him less effective than normal late in the 4th. The shorter the C’s bench is the better for the Lakers. I know TV timeouts are long in the playoffs, but it was evident in the Spurs series that late in those games, there team was winded and was short on jump shots in the fourth quarter. The Lakers, Kobe most of all, looked fresh and ready to play there best ball late. I think this is a real advantage for the poised Lakers, and will shine through the jittery and nervous C’s. I too have a similar formula for Lukimir and Sasha for valued production. I need to somehow factor in Turiaf’s energy and block/contest shots too though.

lakerluv2008,
"Our coaching staff has a total of 59 rings. They have the experience, the knowledge and the understanding to play at this level. Your coaching staff “0” Zero rings, zero experience."
If that statistic doesn't punch you in the gut, I don't know what will.
Wow.
Come on, Phil! Let's get this done.
GO LAKERS!
Posted by: Jon K. | June 04, 2008 at 03:35 PM
Nik,
I think you're right about the benches. All season long the Lakers' bench has provided boosts at key times for the team. Meanwhile, the Celtics had to sign a couple of old guys late in the season to provide themselves with adequate depth.
Posted by: akrasian | June 04, 2008 at 03:38 PM
Red's Love Child,
The Celtics would have to get rid of more than Ray Allen to sign LeBron. They would basically have to strip the team of anybody decent not named Kevin or Paul.
I suspect if LeBron leaves Cleveland, it will be for New York - Nike would love that, and would probably pay him extra for that fantastic exposure in the nation's largest city.
I can't see him going to a team that won't have won a championship in over 20 years, and whose salary cap is being overwhelmed by several aging players in their 30s.
Posted by: akrasian | June 04, 2008 at 03:42 PM
Laker Nation, here's the thing...
I really love this team. I mean, I really love the Lakers in general, but this collection of players is my favorite collection of players since Showtime, maybe ever.
I really love this team.
Unfortunately, I'm a bit scarred by the memories of 2004 Championship. I thought we were going to kill Detroit and their ugly fricken streetball just shut us down. It was painful to watch.
Boston plays ugly clunky basketball, like Detroit did in 2004.
I just don't know what to expect.
Here's the thing, despite the fact the Celtics are filled with talented veterans, I don't like their personalities. By that I mean that I don't aesthetically I don't like their personalities (they seem like nimrods), but I don't like their personalities when it comes to the subject of winning.
Lakerluv2008 made some excellent points. This Laker team is a TRUE team. A true team like Showtime was a true team. The Celtics aren't that. They're a collection of talented players.
The Lakers not only play better together, they enjoy playing together in a way that is joyful and relaxed. It's a true pleasure to watch.
Maybe that will be the difference.
In 2004 Detroit was more of a true team than the Lakers were.
In 2008 the Lakers are a true team, while the Celtics are not.
Perhaps that will be the difference. I'm thinking it may.
GO LAKERS!

Did anyone watch Jim Rome on Rome is Burning today?
Anyway, he goes on to mention an interview he had with Rick Fox about Kobe. Rick Fox reportedly told Rome about an instance when Kobe was a rookie or a 2nd year player on the Lakers team. In this particular game Kobe played like 24 mins and scored 29 points or something like that. After the game on the bus ride back to the team hotel, Kobe is sitting behind Rick Fox and taps him on the shoulder saying matter-of-factly, "I could've scored 73 points tonite."
Rome said Rick Fox remembers thinking, "73 pts, you kidding me?? This kid really thinks he can do that in an NBA game??" That's when Rick Fox basically realized Kobe was on some "DIFF ISH" altogether!!
I guess anyone can go on ESPN and search Rome is Burning for today's Podcast and hear/read for yourself word for word. It was good stuff.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS…
I would like to see Kobe Bryant and every Laker player relentlessly attack the rim and boards to get the Celtics in foul trouble and us in the penalty.
I would like to see the refs give Kobe Bryant the kinds of calls that he deserves as both the premier player in the league and its most valuable player.
I would like to see Kobe Bryant YouTube each of the Big3 with gravity-defying nuts-in-your-face hyper dunks that Nike will feature in its upcoming ads.
I would like to see Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol answer the overly physical play expected on defense from the Celtics by dunking ever single shot attempt.
I would like to see Vlade and Sasha raining high percentage 3-point shots that resulted from strong penetration and inside out ball movement by the Lakers.
I would like to see Derek Fisher dominate and school Rajon Rondo on how you play championship-level point guard in the NBA Finals.
I would like to see the Lakers to play with discipline and desire on defense, clogging the lane and closing and contesting every outside shot.
I would like to see this Celtics team display more class, sportsmanship, courtesy, and respect for the other team than their classless predecessors.
I would like to see Phil Jackson light up a blunt when we put the game into the fridge just like Red Auerbach used to light up his nasty stogie.
I would like to see the Lakers steal both games in Boston from the Celtics so that Jack Nicholson could give them another choke sign at the end of the game.
I would like to see the Celtics unmasked as a championship pretender and Danny Ainge unveiled as just another lucky fantasy league general manager.
I would like to see the Lakers dominate the Celtics and sweep the series in 4 games even though that would mean no more games for another six months.
I would like to see Mitch Kupchak and Phil Jackson make down payments on next year’s EOY and COY awards by winning this year’s NBA Championship.
I would like to see the Lakers close out the series at Staples with Jerry Buss, the Logo, Mitch, Marge Hearn, Jack, and the Lakers faithful all there to celebrate.
I would like to see somebody put together a YouTube highlight of Lakers highlights from this year with dubbed simulcast play-by-play by Chick Hearn.

Everyone talks about how Lakers can make a championship run for next 5 years given the roster we have today but they aren't taking into account ego's, want of PT and more $$$ along with salary cap. There aren't too many D-Fish's out there willing to take a $3-5mm paycut in their prime for the good of keeping the team in tact and winning more championships.
I guarantee KB24 won't take a pay cut in 2 years. And MVP won't ever come off the bench so where does that leave Sasha? After a couple rings, you can bet Sasha, Jordan, Ronny, Luke, etc. are going to want more $$ and be starters. We have seen it before, we will see it again.
In the meantime, GO LAKERS!

I'm sure Boston is going to play very a very physical game against the Lakers. I'm sure they will have ghostly support as PJ runs his team for a 10th ring. I'm sure they are going to be really pumped up and make for a very interesting 5 games. I'm sure they will savor their one victory. Lakers close out Fathers Day. Mark it down.

SMUSH PARKER AIN’T GONNA BEAT THE LAKERS…
And with all due respect, neither are Rajon Rondo or Kendricks Perkins. A key to the Lakers success this season is that they have not allowed the J. R. Smiths, Linas Kleizas, Kyle Korvers, Ronnie Brewers, Fabricio Obertos, and Michael Finleys to defeat them. In fact, the only role player so far to have a great series against the Lakers this playoffs was Brent Barry, which was OK since the Lakers shut down Manu. The Lakers this year have definitely taken care of business against the teams and players that they should.
Basically, the Lakers offense is so potent that they are confident that the Celtics Big3 cannot score enough points to beat the Lakers if all of their role players are kept in check. It’s the same formula the Lakers used to beat the Nuggets, Jazz, and Spurs – play the other team’s star players tough but most of all don’t let any of the role players get going. The Spurs fell because they got no offensive production from Oberto or Finley, two offensive black holes in their starting lineup that are not unlike Rondo and Perkins.
Putting this series in proper perspective, there is no way that Phil Jackson is going to allow Rajon Rondo or Kendricks Perkins to have a good series. In fact, a key component of the Lakers’ strategy to beat the Celtics is based on taking advantages of the huge mismatches that the Lakers have at the point guard and center positions. Boston fans should be worrying about what Phil and the Lakers have in store for Rondo and Perkins rather than glibly and wrongly imagining they have some sort of advantage there.

LAKER TIME
It’s June ag’in, an’ I’m feelin’ joy
That’s sure to come this time of year for every Laker boy
For every June the NBA finals my be seen
With those everlasting memories, of Magic, Worthy, A.C. an’ Kareem
The Laker girls wave pom poms, an’ do a little dance
An’ Laker boys tell Blazer Boys, next years’ another chance
It’s June ag’in, an’ with all happiness in min’
I’m rootin for the Lakers, an’ if your smart, you’d better join’
One year we played the Sixers, the first year of Magic’s reign
Although the Lakers won the series, Norm Nixon left with pain
And twice we played the Pistons, an’ had a heap of fun
But the best of all the finals were with those pushy Bostonians
With Larry Bird an’ Parrish, D.J., Ainge, and Kevin McHale
The way they pushed and shoved, to try an’ make the Lakers’ fail
Oh…yes those bully Bostonians gave it yer so fine
But when the Lakers come to play, they win it most everytime
Yes, at this time of year the Lakers have a special claim on me
Cuz now the Lakers have Lamar and Kobe on National TV
Why should all those crazy fans out west
Think jus cuz Shaq is gone, the Lakers aren’t still the best
They’ve added Pua Gasol, Jordan, Sasha, an’ young Luke to help them win
An’ Phil is there to teach them… his special form of Zen
Derek Fisher is back, an’ Jack Nicholson is front row center
Makin’ sure all the folks at home… get to see the stars at Staple Center
Some people call it tinsel town, and like to see the Lakers beat
But even Pat Riley counts his lucky stars… he had the Champs before he had the Heat
However hateful their opponents elsewise may be
Their doctrine of “Showtime” basketball lives on in the 21st Centuree
So… once ag’in we’ll play the Celtics, different faces we will see
An’ MVP Kobe Bryant and the lads … want nothin’ less than total victory
The sits will fill with legends, the court with stories to be told
It’s goin’ be a great one, with every ticket sold
It’s June ag’in, an’ the purple an’ gold lookin’ mighty fine
They’re goin’ have the Finals, an’ ag’in it’s Laker-Time

akrasian,
In the prior comment, I typed web when I meant Internet. I think that was why you mis-read my comment. My bad.
You said:
"Usenet was very active years before 1986."
Well....it was around and used to some extent, but I hardly think we could call it "Very active". I would guess that compared to today that the connections, and amount of bandwidth used were less than 1-1,000,000th of today. So I guess if you want to call 14 guys in the basement of MIT "Very Active" that's your definition.
You are making my point. Sure Usenet was around but WHO used it. Virtually nobody. What most people consider the Internet is the WWW.
Since I was part of two different teams looking into ways to use the internet, and if in 1986 this thing called WWW, was a viable solution I would have to say I have an above average understanding of the subject.
Given your slurping up over Al Gore, I wonder what you thought of the LATEST NOAA predictions saying the oceans are getting COLDER. The were STUNNED and unable to explain why if global warming was occurring, why the ocean temp data showed the opposite.
I'm sure Algore will figure it out.

Andy and Brian,
I am not trying to bust your chops over the frequency of the updates either. You know I think you guys have done an unparalleled job creating and driving the blog. But the idea of the Internet is 24/7 access and the blog has fans in every time zone in the world. This is not Mike T’s blog but a part of the online presence of the esteemed LA Times.
None of us are asking you guys to personally update every hour but I think the blog has become a big enough enterprise that either you or the Times needs to ante up and get as associate to help you set a regular schedule or frequency for updating posts, which can obviously differ depending what is going on. In the Finals, it would be great to see hourly and or every two hours. Off season, maybe every 4 hours.
I’m glad to see you at least respond to Eric’s post. I somehow feel as if I am trying to interview Hillary about Monica when you ignore my numerous previous posts and the new bandwagon. Do you find what I am saying make sense. More frequent updates mean more posts which means more ad clicks which means more revenue which means happier Andy and Brian. No?

Eric M,
I didn't misread your post. You said "Web" as if it were all (or at least most) of the internet, which it isn't. Especially hilarious, since you talked about using the web to FTP - except that FTP was a part of the internet years before the Web.
Years before the web (btw, the protocal for the WWW was developed in 1989) every significant 4 year college and university, and every significant research institute, was using the internet for both research and (unofficially) leisure. Many businesses were also online, because they wanted to take advantage of email - another part of the internet developed prior to the web (and while most business users were limited to email for the internet - the people in the IT department were also routinely using FTP and Usenet) Don't act like it was just a few geeks. Just because you weren't technically savvy enough to take advantage of it, doesn't mean that Long Time Laker Fan was as ignorant - which is the actual point, after all. You accused him of lying for saying he was active on the INTERNET years ago - and there is zero reason to believe he wasn't telling the truth.
Incidentally, here is a link ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Www ) showing that the web was developed in 1989, not 1986 - so I wouldn't be too impressed with your savvy, if you thought you were on the web in 1986.
I'm not sure how pointing out that Gore was a major figure in providing the funding for the internet is slurping him - I guess you just can't stand to proven wrong on things.
In any case - GO LAKERS! - even if ignoramuses like you support them too.

PsychedLakerGirl,
Pretty smart for a “Valley Girl.” Excellent post. Your comparison of the Lakers vs. Celtics to the Yankees vs. Dodgers is a good analogy. I would still hate the Dodgers, just like I hate the Celtics, but not as much because like the Celtics, the Dodgers don’t count.
There is no doubt in my old-timer’s mind that expansion, free agency, and fantasy leagues have seriously ruined the purity of sports and sports fans. It results in guys like Jon K. actually trying to be fans of both the Lakers AND the Clippers at the same time. (I love you but you are crazy, Jon)
When I was a kind walking to school 10 miles in freezing rain and snow, I could recite the name of every player on every team in every league. Today, stability and loyalty are as rare in sports as franchises fully committed to winning and not just making money.
Another point you are right about is that injuries, salaries, playing time, egos, and modern life in general will be as great a challenge in continuing our dynasty as how well we play. I also think that Kobe will opt out in order to sign a more salary-cap-favorable extension with the Lakers to set an example, to free up money to keep team together, and to show that what he cares most about is winning. Let LeBron be the billionaire. All KB24 wants is another 4 NBA championships. That’ll keep the bucks rolling and the team intact.

Laker Tom,
As we've explained many times (not just to you, but in general), the frequency with which comments go live is a topic we've discussed many times with the powers that be. Besides BK and I, there are "mothership" people occasionally monitoring the blog, but unless 24 hour surveilence is employed (which is unrealistic) or the Times allow comments to go unscreened (which I doubt will ever happen), the lags sometimes experienced are inevitable.
It's not that I don't agree with what you're saying. It's just out of our hands. We're employees, not the budget makers. We've brought this to everyone's attention and there's not much more BK and I can do. If it bothers you this much, my suggestion would be directing your comments to the sports department. If they hear enough reader displeasure, perhaps it would convince them that more people paid to clear comments is worth the money.
I'm not trying to pass the buck. I'm just saying, this is a matter we don't have any control over.

Your last post was artful in its half-truths, and selective comments. John Kerry would be proud. I must point out that the "Issue" wasn't whether LTLF used the web, it was that he was bringing his political BS to the blog. This isn't the place.

lakerfaze,
>>>since before Al Gore invented the internet.
don't be a political troll. Al Gore never said that he invented
the internet. What he said was that we (meaning he and the
rest of Congress) created the internet. Since they paid the tab
(with our money) to create most of the infrastructure that became
the internet, his statement was true. It was Fox News &
Rush Limbaugh who changed the word "we" to "I" and the
word "created" to "invented".
So when you repeat that statement, the liar is not Al Gore,
but you.
But you're right... Boston hasn't won anything since before

While I'm bored and feeling mischievous, let me congratulate all of our gay and lesbian Lakers fans for their long-deserved victory in CA. Justice at last. I’m already invited to 2 weddings. Obama, Gay Marriage, and a Lakers championship all in the same month.
Wow!
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Zen,
One more thing I forgot to tell, we didn't listen to Tom Heinsohn or Dick Stockton at that time. Did you notice how biased was their coverage always prodding and commenting about the Celtics. They just gave some coverage on the Laker in the last 2 minutes. That's why We put the TV audio on mute and listened to the play by play of the late Chickie baby because he was always ahead than the TV video. This rivalry will be the same without the legendary broadcasters, Johnny Most with the Celtic (always with hoarse voice) and Chick Hearn.
Although NFL is the most popular league in USA, I believe among the professional leagues in US, NBA Finals will be the most watched series in 205 countries and broadcast in 46 languages. Every basketball nation in the world is familiar with the Lakers and Celtics.

Have you also noticed the Boston Celtics do not have any international players in their roster? ( except for danny ainge who is a martian) lol!

Hello Laker & Celtic fans,
I am back to tell everyone that the Celtics are cursed, that is why they have been a lottery team for the last 2 decades. They no longer have the Celtic tradition that I started, and all the fans now are bandwagoners. The Lakers are the present and future, the 1987 game was the pendulum swinging in their direction, the Celtics are the past. Kobe is the best player on the planet and Phil is the best coach, I hope he smokes a cigar after he wins this one.
Lakers in 5!

way back when al gore was involved in a senate security investigation questioning col. oliver north, he asked ollie who he thought was the most dangerous man alive. "osama bin laden" replied north. i believe the newspaper reports say gore "scoffed at col. north".

I don't know if that is true or not, but it gave me goose bumps. It makes you wonder.
