Still breathing

June 16, 2008 | 10:06 am

Gasol_elevates_over_garnett_game_5 The Lakers, faced with a Sunday night elimination game on a home floor that they have defended well throughout the playoffs, pushed back against the Celtics in Game 5 of the NBA Finals with a hard-fought slugfest of a 103-98 win, forcing a Game 6 in Beantown on Tuesday night. It wasn't easy, and it certainly wasn't pretty, but the Lakers did what they needed to do, putting the champagne back on ice and forcing the Larry O to hop aboard a plane (or be carried on, we presume). It took a balanced effort to get there. Kobe Bryant again struggled with his shot after a red-hot first quarter, but the Lakers were the beneficiaries of big nights from Pau Gasol (19/13/6/2) and Lamar Odom (20/11/2/4), who took advantage of foul trouble with Kevin Garnett and PJ Brown, plus the absence of Kendrick Perkins in the middle, to play a strong game in the post.  Both were big throughout, with Gasol setting the tone early with strong, physical play against KG

There was a little deja vu, as well, when L.A. built another big first-quarter lead - this time 17 points - and lost it, then another in the fourth as large as 14 ... and lost that too. But a big steal from Kobe on Paul Pierce (who, with 38 points, six boards and eight dimes, was absolutely unbelievable) helped ice the game for the Lakers. Finally, they punched back when Boston tried to take the game away from them.

With the win, the Lakers are still in a large mathematical hole, but the odds of a series win did inch up a little more. It's a mistake to count them out until they are, in fact, out.  As for Boston, they'll go back home with two cracks at a title, but no question, they had a crack at it on Sunday, and let it get away.

Save a very productive game from Jordan Farmar, it was another tough night for the L.A. bench.  Phil Jackson tried a few different combinations, even dusting off Chris Mihm for a couple minutes at the start of the second quarter. The Lakers will definitely need more from the reserves in Boston if they're going to pull the upset.

The Celtics will want more from KG, who beyond his foul trouble Sunday missed key free throws and a late tip. He certainly wasn't pleased with how he played. There's also the worry that the Lakers may have taken Rajon Rondo out of the series.  (No worries - Sam Cassell says he's ready and rarin' to go in Game 6, if need be.) There's certainly confidence in Celtics Nation for a strong game on Tuesday

BDL takes a look at the game.  Ian Thomson of SI.com sees success in Lakers balance. That might explain some of these high marks. They'll have to continue holding up effectively to Boston's swarming D and physical play to have a chance. It's a huge test, no question.

Hey Guys,

Off to the next game!

Ugly wins are earned. Win the hard way!

It's all about Game 6.

The series is now 3-2. We believe the winning percentages should be counted on that record; because we are no longer down 3-1.

Let's embrace the pressure.

This season has been everything about pressure! This Team has handled the stress! I love it.

Turn it up!!! http://tinyurl.com/2xl39y

All songs produced by Queen used in sporting events are Laker oriented.

I Will Forever Believe in the Lakers! Love it or leave it alone!

Got to get to Game Seven.

We'll win Game Six like we won Game Five.

Through Unity.

GO LAKERS!

JUST THINK FINAL FOUR!

"Celtics fans who've waited 22 years for another banner will have to wait a little longer.

The 62d NBA championship will be won in the New Boston Garden. The Lakers made this a certainty last night with a 103-98 victory over the Celtics at Staples Center."

we goin to take this from the boston globe???

Anything can happen. That was a very odd game 5. I thought the Celtics could have been called for a foul every rebound both defensive and offense. Refs allowed A LOT of banging. And then some ticky-tack fouls. Odd. Also it is just me or should Cassell have been called for an offensive foul in the fourth quarter on the 3-point play?

In real time I let out a large expletive but I always wait for the replay. It confirmed what I saw. Yes the Laker defender was in the popcorn machine. But he COMPLETELY came down before Cassell even started his shot. Then Cassell goes horiztonally into the defenders chest. Thought it should have been an offensive foul.

Gasol by far looked the best he has in the series. No matter who the Celtics have playing I hope he retains that confidence. We won and Kobe had at least 2.5 bad quarters so we can play better. I think P.J. learned his lesson and Fish needs to be in the last 6 minutes of the 4th. Jordan was very good but our Bench can still be better as a unit.

So do we have a chance? For sure. Kobe still has not played great for the series. Lamar and Odom are doing better at rebounding and our bench is still better than the Celtics but has yet to be so in this series. If our Bench plays better and we get better on Pierce and rebound we have a great chance.

Really there have been Celtics each game that have played over their heads other than the big 3, if that happens in 6 and 7 they have a good shot at winning. But Laker bench players can do the same.

I love how all of the national media is counting out the Lakers, we shall see. BTW there CAN NOT be a huge discprency in foul shots. Boston was essentially playing at home foul wise the last 2 games, we better not see an avalanche of green fouls in 6 and 7. And yes there will be a 7!

We should never stop believing...

Is anyone else getting really annoyed at the fact that we are getting no credit for this win? Everyone's saying that we are lucky to have survived and that it's not gonna last, etc etc.

I know it wasn't the prettiest of wins last night, but that's all we needed. Why are people acting like it's over?

Not to mention that had it not been for "the collapse" and a terribly officiated game 2, we could have been crowned champions last night. I don't understand why people are dubbing this Celtics team so much better than the Lakers. Every game thus far has really been anyone's for the taking.

GO LAKERS!!!

GO LAKERS!

I'm happy the Lakers won but again PJ almost blew it. I think he is coaching to save his job instead of winning outright.

Sure if he wins is job is a little more secure but in case he does not he is giving himself an excuse.

Note the substitution using Mihm and others was wrong or too short. He pulls any one not producing immediately except Luke Walton.

He puts in Mihm who he refused to give any pt during season and expects great results or just an excuse. I can see him saying to his critics I tried substitutions other than the ones I have used and see they couldn't produce.

Genius give him pt during season so he can produce or better yet use Mbenga who has helped when used before.

Use the bench properly and this series is still winnable even with the bets.

So I removed the curse off my lucky bar stool last night by covering the seat in peanut shells and then sweeping them off in a single wipe.

I literally cleared the bar (which was kept open in honor of the Lakers game) of all except a few Lakers fans through my Tourette's-like screams and repeated hitting of the bar.

It felt good to win, though I must admit I was nervous at times.

Anyhow, the bar stool is back in action.

Expect victory Tuesday night.

We win through Unity.

GO LAKERS!

How is Paul Pierce destroying every Laker defender outside of Kobe? Ridiculous....absolutely ridiculous. He's not even fast. And what is the deal with every Laker defender playing right up against him. It hasn't been effective for the past 3 games! Why not try playing off of him a bit and making him make a shot over the top of a lengthy defender? I still think Ariza can do the best job on Pierce, he just needs to use his length and force Pierce to shoot over him.

And finally, finally someone told Farmar that he's faster than Sam Cassell and Eddie House. Sam Freakin Cassell....you can't have him out on the floor and not take advantage of him.

Did anyone else think Kobe seem disinterested and really sluggish outside of the 1st quarter? I mean, even in the 1st quarter, he didn't look pumped up. He just happened to make his shots. He's still whining and bitching about being fouled on every possession. Even if he is fouled, don't just give up on the play and bitch while the ball is still live. Man up and finish the play first!

And Chris Freakin Mihm....what the hell...i think Jackson just threw him out there to get a laugh from all in attendance. Like, hey, everyone, lighten up...this is just a game!

If the Lakers play like this again, this series is way beyond over.

JustaLakerFan,

I thought Mihm played with good energy. Just, quite frankly, Paul Pierce made some great shots and drew some fouls.

We have figure out a way to stop Paul Pierce. That guy is driving me nuts.

AND STOP THE DAMNED THREE POINTERS!

Too many of those fell. That's why the game was as close as it was.

GO LAKERS!

AK,

Never forget.

"We are the Lakers! The Mighty, Mighty Lakers!"

Never give up.

Never surrender.

GO LAKERS!

Yes everyone has us counted out because we went down 3-1 and noone has ever come back from that.

But if we win game 6 in Boston watch them all backtrack then. If we can make it that far, the pressure will be on Boston. I believe right now the pressure is still on the Lakers, because Boston has 2 chances to close out at home. But if they blow the first chance, then the pressure shifts to them.

And remember the oddsmakers haven't counted us out. Boston is only favored by 3 points in game 6 at home. We were favored by 8.5, 7.5 and 7 in our home games.

Great win and the resilency of this group was by far the best attribute. And now that Pau and LO are back in to this and understand what they need to contribute - maybe that will extend to the bench and we finally get the complete Lakers team we have been waiting to see this entire series.

Maybe, just maybe, they are peaking at just the right time!!! Game 6 next to show us that the bench is still here. That's what I am hoping for......

Hey bench mob - do you really want to go down in this finals as being the group that didn't produce? Come on guys - we need you now more that ever!

GO LAKERS!

16...15...14...13...12...11...10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...

gokobego,

I don't mind.

Keep discounting the Lakers. Keep telling everyone how it's really a matter of the Celtics and the Lakers have almost no say in the outcome.

Just keep saying it.

Then, when David Stern hands the O'Brien to Jerry Buss after a SHOCKING game 7 conclusion, perhaps the media will give the Lakers some credit and maybe the Celtics will realize that they bought into the lie.

Can you see it??

The Celtic fans booing, throwing stuff onto the court. Lakers fans in the crowd getting assaulted...

The announcers completely speechless...

Phil Jackson with a huge smile on his face...

Kobe Bryant wearing his NBA Champions hat with the biggest grin you've seen on his face...

Pau Gasol elated...

Lamar Odom in tears as he realizes the enormity of what he's just done, after what he's gone through in life...

Derek Fisher thinking how remarkable it is that a year ago he was scared to death about his daughter and now he's sipping Champaign...

Mitch Kupchak in the locker room gives a speech when the reporters ask him questions...

The headlines in Friday's paper....

CAN YOU SEE IT?

IF YOU CAN SEE IT, THEN YOU CAN BELIEVE IT...

IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT, THEN YOU CAN ACHIEVE IT

first, the most important question: who are the refs for game 6? are they going to let the Lakers play or not? they sure let Boston play, here in LA.

second, MIHM SIGHTING! I actually got up out of my chair and stood close to the tv. Is that... Mihm? Yes! It was!!! Dude only played a few minutes, but those minutes were more effective than what Turiaf has been giving us. Sure would help if our guards could actually keep somebody in front of them so our big guys don't pick up cheap fouls...

third??? Phil finally sat Sasha down. That's what saved the game right there. I know he's "just missing" but... HE'S MISSING! and if he misses one of those 3 pointers, you can almost wind your watch to the following fast break basket at the other end...

fourth??!!! Luke Walton was getting SMOKED on defense once again... and Radmanovic looked like a stumbling klutz after he got worked up... that SF position is our BANE right now... seems our only viable SF is Kobe...

fifth??!!??? can Odom and Gasol concentrate enough to have 2 more good games together or is that too much to ask? How about at least a good 1/2 game from Odom? Maybe Radmanovic will get hot and carry Odom for the other half of the game when he decides to disappear...

KENDRICK PERKINS JUST SUPPLIED SOME GREAT BULLETIN BOARD MATERIAL FOR THE LAKERS:

Talking about his injury:

“Well, I can still hold up the trophy,” Perkins said. “It’s very disappointing. It’s not often that you get to the Finals. This is a very important game, but if you can’t play, then you can’t play.”

16...15...14...13...12...11...10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...

Good morning Laker family.

TWO MORE WINS. We can do this. Or as my preacher man says... It's already done!

Mamba, got a thought on our next bandwagon. I can't believe I'm even typing this... However, the MVP needs some bandwagon love. He has not been himself this series. He's done a fine job. I'm very proud of him. But, he's Kobe Freakin' Bryant. We need him to be Mr. Amazing in Boston. I really don't have a suggestion for the name of the bandwagon. I will entrust your capable mind with that one.

We need the Mamba to strike with his legendary lethal accuracy and force. We need him to elevate himself and his team to glory.

Anybody that watched last night’s game can see that disgraced ref, Tim Donaghy was NOT lying with regards to favorable or no calls for the so-called star players. KG’s third and fourth fouls called against him were truly unbelievable. The no-calls for traveling and fouling favoring the Lakers are too numerous to laugh off anymore. It is beyond doubt scandalous. Stern can lie or deny what he wants but if it looks, smells and sounds like a duck….Quack Quack Mr. Stern.

AK: I am glad you are going to Boston. Finally, we will get some "real fan" karma there - BK we love you but we need heart and soul now, man.....

And question for both you guys and others........with a G6 win (not trying to get too far ahead of myself), it seems to me that this group's chances go up exponentially (forgetting about all the stupid stats)?

I get the feeling that we haven't seen a C's meltdown and they are getting closer to that. When they start pressing and rushing - I see the chinks in their armour. Maybe PJ is on to something.....it's a long series and the longer it goes the more it starts favoring this Laker team.

Hopelessly optimistic.......... GO LAKERS!

Important things in Game 5 that will be Forgotten ...

---I agree with you, his decisions regarding substitutions are poor at times. I've seen him pull a guy when he is in the middle of a hot shooting streak for reasons God only knows. I also think M'benga would be a better reserve than Mihm at this point.
Last night, ABC commentators Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy (who know a little about basketball) made an observation that the Celtics keep running plays that work against the Lakers again and again, and they were not adjusting to what Boston was doing. Also, they pointed out that the Lakers are not moving their feet and giving up their bodies for charges, instead swiping at the ball and being called for fouls.

I hope the Lakers will see these problems in their review of game tape, and make some corrections. They will need to be more physical and drive to the hoop more often, as Jordan Farmar did with success last night.

In spite of possible "home-town refereeing" by the guys in black and white and nasty Celtic fans, I believe the Lakers can pull two games off, but not until they address these problem areas. I hope Phil Jackson will make better decisions tomorrow.

You seem to be contradicting yourself, unless you are saying that KG is not a star player. I think you're being too harsh on KG. Now, I realize that he is not at Kobe's level, but I would still consider him a star.

Watching Paul Pierce last night move barely contested to the basket again and again last night made me think about...

Ron Artest!

Yes, he is a wacko and some may see him as a "cancer", but I see how different things could be if we had Artest in there guarding Pierce instead of Radman or Walton.

He is like a pit bull, can go dangerous and bite the hand that feeds it, but if you're in a fight, what other dog would you want to fight along side of you?

Lets hope he can join the Lake Show later this year...

Gokobego,

Why are the Lakers not favored despite the momentum in winning Game 5?

Well, because we lost grip of the big lead again on the second consecutive game and dig deep to win in 4thQ, For us, who are used to the best features of the Lakers dominating the Western teams Nuggets, Jazz and Spurs are not used to our lame purpose with a win. We know we can do better than that. We are playing like Clippers or Lakers with Smush. Sorry for the harsh criticisms but I think Lakers need to wake up to reality especially if they want to win the most coveted Championship in Boston.

Odom made 20 yesterday but he has not shown dominating the games the way we have seen him during the last 25 games. Don't be self denial that you are focused, give us that real Odom, the real BOMB not the bum moves we see in this playoffs.

Kobe is the best player in the world but without that interception, he is practically living in a cage with the Celtic defense.

Gasol made double-double but I just feel sorry he is being dominated by small player forwards, by KG, no respect at all on matador Gasol. (Even the gay bulls make fun on the soft matador) Kareem is as soft as Gasol during the 80's but you can't leave him with one guard in the shaded area, nor pushed him out of his hook shots. He would make you pay.

Lakers, I ask you for the nth time, you want to win the Championship. GET TOUGH! It is all in your hands, we pray, we cheer, we psyche ourselves, we never stopped believing but if you don't put everything into ACTION, some players are still playing lousy basketball, all these efforts comes into waste.

Odom - Get greedy and use your height advantage plus ambidextrous talent.

Kobe - why did you stop going to the hoop? If you go inside, you opened up others on the outside plus an opportunity to fish for foul. However, if you launch those long shots and depend on them, then Lakers chances of winning the Championship will also be longshot.

Gasol - Caramba! By this time, you know what NBA is all about? Use your height and movements just like in one play, rotate the ball or have courage TO DOMINATE the post.

I may be an unfair homer here not a faithful cheerleader but folks, with two games to go, let's call a spade a space and a wimp, a wimp! These Finals may just be a preparation of the future by why not WIN IT NOW?

(71) TP - we goin to take this from the boston globe JUST THINK FINAL FOUR!
(72) JustALakerFan - Use the bench properly and this series is still winnable even with the bets.

What is Perkins status for the series?

The lakers should be celebrating their championship last night! The refs bail out pierce in game two with that bad call when the lakers brought it to a two point game and Lakers collapse in game 4! That's the way I'm feeling right!

Some neighbors weren't so lucky, but we (my family) dodged a bullet. Fire (Humboldt Fire NoCal) is 85% contained. I appreciate the kind words from posters here.

Re Chris Mihm:
Some of you apparently have forgotten, but PJ did play him during the regular season, and he did not perform very well.

Take that into consideration, along with the facts that the Lakers were fighting for home court advantage in the west, Gasol was still learning to play with this roster and this system (which is still an issue, by the way), Turiaf is still inexperienced and can use all the PT he can get, and time given to Mihm is time taken from Turiaf or Gasol. (See above.) And Mbenga is not the answer.

Considering Mihm's "rust" plus his performance when he did get to play, the best approach at that point (i.e. regular season and the earlier rounds of the playoffs) was to give the PT to Gasol and Turiaf. That had a much higher probability of success.

Unfortunately, Turiaf has not been playing especially well, so Jackson gambled on Mihm yesterday (with a big lead) to see what would happen.

Mamba24,

Please add me to the I Believe bandwagon!

From SI's Thomsen article:

Having survived the Finals on his home court, the best player in basketball returns to Boston with his young, overmatched team. "A lot of people say, 'Kobe, you have to go out for 40 or 50,' '' he said. "But that's not how we play. That's not what's going to win us championships. We've got to stick together, ride this out as a unit, and that's what we're going to do.''

We are riding this out as a unit!!! Hear that lame trolls? As Jon K says "we win thru Unity"

LAT Lakers blog UNITE - GO LAKERS!!!

Tim-4-Show,

I closed my eyes and I saw it.

I can see it.

I believe.

GO LAKERS!

BK and AK,

You guys were in Finals form in the video. Very polished. Was that a one-take or multi? Great job leading, Brian. And smart move sending the real Lakers fan to Boston to help the team come back. Watch yourself in Beantown, Andy. Stay away from the strip clubs and karaoke bars. I’d also be very careful of room service. LOL.

Tom

Danny: I totally agree. Ariza is probably our next best shot at stopping Pierce after Kobe, and should be our go-to defender if Kobe gets in foul trouble. I know he's young, and I know PJ hates to put in primarily defensive players, but that's where we're losing the game, not in offense.

If I (heaven forbid) was born a celtic fan I would be nervous... Lakers take game 7 riots erupt all over boston....Priceless.

Game 6 . . . Sacramento. DEVASTATING. Sacramento has never recovered even SIX years later; they still cry and try to figure out who to blame.

Game 6 . . . Boston. LAKERS EXPLODE! Who are you going to blame? Can you recover loosing Game 6 Boston?

LAKERS to VICTORY or DIE TRYING!

I still believe we can win this. Can we win playing the way we played last night. Absolutely not. But I have to believe that we'll find some way to impose our style of play on them for more than one quarter. We've got Kobe, who has only played one great game. He's due for at least one more. Let's push this to 7 and let the chips fall where they may.

Tim-4-Show,

I SEE IT!!! I BELIEVE!!!

GO LAKERS!!!

Gokobego - I totally agree - the media has largely been acting like last night was just a bump on the way to the Celtic's coronation. At the same time, a lot of the same talking heads were on board with the Lakers BEFORE the series began. Fickle press, that's all.

The Lakers are going to keep doing their thing, quarter by quarter, just like they have all season long. Heroes one moment, goats the next. They may not be the most consistent team by any stretch, but they're still alive, deep into the Finals. What an awesome bunch of knuckleheads.

my conspiracy theory -

I think the reason that Phil put Chris Mihm on the floor during
the 2nd quarter was twofold:

1. He wanted to get Mihm a little taste of what it's like to play in
the finals in case they need him next season. You never
know whether someone will get injured or something, so you
may actually need your 3rd string center, and there was a
time when Mihm was actually a pretty good player, so he
may yet be useful to the team. Just plant the seed in his
head how hard he's going to have to play just to keep
up with everyone else.

2. He wanted to lose the lead. In game 4, the Lakers went
into halftime with an 18 point lead, so they came out playing
more laid back in the second half and that played right into
Boston's hands. By losing the lead by halftime, the players
came out playing aggressive in the 3rd quarter and thus
won the quarter. And then kept playing hard til the end of
the game.

Danny

Trevor was on the pre-game show last Thursday and said Paul Pierce is a tough one to guard because he moves slower and off-speed to a different rhythm than most players and its that lag that causes him to be so effective. Paul is going to get his, he's a scorer. We just need to make him work and shut down the other's as best we can. I was at lastnight's game the place was on fire! Good win now let's go do it to them in Boston.

I am pretty sure they'll win in game 5, but seriously, guys, you seriously think they'll win the seaon? it would be like red sox vs. yankees that year lol
