Some additional hope?
Down 3-1 to the Celtics, a deficit no team in the history of the NBA Finals has managed to overcome, I know many Laker fans are looking for any sort of omen that might favor the purple and gold. While we don't generally encourage our readers to get political on the site- in fact, we actively discourage it- but the guys over at the LAT's outstanding Top of the Ticket blog, a killer source for all things Washington-y,
have uncovered some stats that might make you rest easier. Apparently, the Lakers have a track record of success in election years. They also, apparently, have a track record of getting Republicans elected, but that's a totally separate issue we won't be discussing here (see above):
"... in the last nearly six decades of professional bouncing basketballs, the Lakers have played in the league Finals eight times during presidential election years.
This year is No. 9.
The good news is they've won five of those eight times.
The bad news is they've lost three times -- to Detroit 4-1 during the most recent presidential election and to these same Massachusetts guys 4-3 in 1984 and 4-2 exactly 40 years ago.
The Lakers beat the Pacers 4-2 in 2000, the Pistons 4-3 in 1988, the 76ers 4-2 in 1980 with Magic at the MVP podium, the Knicks 4-1 in 1972 with Wilt Chamberlin as MVP and the Knicks again 4-3 as the Minneapolis Lakers in 1952.
Interestingly, win or lose, every time L.A. plays in the Finals during presidential leap years, the Republican candidate wins -- Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon twice, Ronald Reagan twice, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush twice.
There's likely a lesson in here about rocking the vote, but I'm not sure what it is.

It's over.
It's just a matter now if the Lakers regroup and show some professionalism and win what should be their best chance to win in Game 5.
Celtics will be expecting a tooth and nails close out game. But will there be a tipping point when the Lakers realize the season is over and give up?
Or will the Lakers win one in what will probably be their easiest win of the next three games?
I'm just hoping Kobe will be MVP Kobe and not Pissed Off DivaKobe when it's all over.

ONE THING THAT IS ANNOYING ME...
Every time I see/hear "3-1, a deficit no team in the history of the NBA Finals has managed to overcome", I get mad because if you're gonna mention that, then also mention the fact that no team has ever had such a big comeback win, and no team has ever had a 21 point lead after the first quarter in the Finals, too! Because if history and records are supposed to be so important and rare, than why has history has been broken twice already? Three times would be just as nice!!!

There's a lesson indeed. My team or my country.
Sorry, country comes first.
Read between the lines. I'm trying to only be subtly partisan.
Jokes and meaningless coincidences aside, I've mostly gotten over game 4.
The most important thing to me now is that we win game 5. I don't care about anything else. That's my only goal for our team now. We can think about everything else later.
The team should be thinking along the same lines, particularly the guy in charge of lineups, the coach. Ariza deserves way more minutes.

Now, assuming that Perkins isn't available for GAME SIX...
Doc has to start PJB - wily vet, knows all the tricks - but still, all in all, a mercenary. Merc's can be skilled fighters, but they do so without heart. Also, at age fifty nine, or whatever he is, prone to giving easy fouls once sealed. We WILL see a lot of their small ball line up. Posey and Pierce up front. How do we make this work?
kg and four shooters...how do we stop it...how do we hurt them at the other end...GAME SIX, people!!!
Let's put our thinking caps on!

It's time to make HISTORY! Lakers saw it done to them against Phoenix in 2006, so they've seen firsthand that it's possible. I still believe this is the team pundits picked to be the favorite, so if any team can come back from 3-1, it's the Lakers.
I still believe.

celtics still has to close the series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(on the Stuff people said (Game 4)
----------------------------------------------------
as i said before. even at 3-2 for the lakers, we had to win one in boston.
we have to win sunday ....2-3
we can force that"one win in boston" 3-3
and will see who will be more deflated, us or THEM
this really has become: ONE GAME AT A TIME.
nobody gets a championship because they r up 3-1.
a TEAM needs 4 wins.
and they have to play the game
we had 90 games to criticize and dissect
at this moment, please, let's stop trades .... and other summer topics.
any real fan who ever believed in this team should stand up and cheer to the last minute of action
and there are still left
48 minutes
48+48
or
48+48+48 .... = 144 minutes
that is the square of 12
12x12 quarters .... interesting number
go lakers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Time to show how much heart we have! Everything needs to go by the wayside - we have more offensive talent than the Celts, but they have shown MUCH more heart at this juncture. Each quarter can be won; there's no deterministic law that says the Lake Show can't win the next 3 straight.
How much do we want it? Put everything on the line tonight - for if we lose, there is no tomorrow!

Good morning Laker family around the Globe,
I can't explain why, but I'm still feeling good about our chances. Yes, I've seen the Lakers get crushed in three of the four first games. On the other hand, the Lakers team we've all watched this season and post-season hasn't shown-up yet against Boston.
The Celtics have proven that they believe in themselves and each other. Doc Rivers has proved he can get the best out of his players when he needs to. Anyone who dares to deny any of this is out of touch with reality.
But until they arrived in the Garden, the Lakers had done the same. They could execute the offense well enough to be the highest scoring team in the league. They could go into lock-down Defense when it was needed. There was nearly always an X-Factor, when called upon.
So far, the Finals have been a disastrous series for the Lakers. There's a chance the Game 4 melt-down was a wake-up call. How could it not be? Some say the odds against a Lakers recovery are too long. I say, how can the team with the best record in the Western Conference not find a way to win three games in a row?
There's a reason the Finals are a best of seven game series. We have yet to see the best of the Lakers. This is our team. This is our year. Go Lakers!

LA Fans in the stands? Except for those in the 300's section, the rest sucked the life out of our team. The place went silent when our lead was cut to 12. No chants of MVP. No whooping and hollering to get the team UP. The fans put as much pressure on the team as the Celtics.
Were they there to root for the team, or to see Jack and Dianne? Or just to be able to tell their friends they saw Wil Smith?
LA fans are fickle, and fair-weathered. The folks at Staples were as much responsible for the loss as the team. If you're going to game 5, CHEER OUR TEAM.
Too bad the real fans can't afford to go to these games.
GO LAKERS!

You Laker fan are as fake as your so-called superstar Kobeer Bryant.
I've watched Game 4 numberous time since The Debacle by The Mamba and company thanks to the The Truth, The Big Ticket and The Ray Allen (dude doesn't have a nickname) and The Celt TEAM.
Did I say, "I love this game"?
You Laker snots on and off the court thinking your hotshots when you're just a bunch of wannabees just like Kobeef Bryant trying waaaaaayyyy tooooooo hard to be Jordan.
Kocrybaby Bryant is NOT EVEN CLOSE to the true greats like Jordan, Bird, Magic, and Kobean's fav player, Shaq Daddy.
I sincerely hope on Father's day, Celts say to Kobeef and Company...

Good Morning Charles---Good Morning Everyone....
Thursday night was one of the most devestating losses I have had to endure sinse 1966....
I don't really know which is the better team, but I do know which team has played better and that's the one with a 3-1 lead....
As Jon K. and others have stated, I am extremely proud of this team and am very excited and believe in their future ....
IF ANY TEAM CAN COME BACK FROM A 3-1 DEFICIT IN THE FINALS, IT IS THIS TEAM !!!
We just have to play like we are capable of playing (and for the entire 48 MINUTES OF EACH OF THE 3 GAMES) ... the Lakers have not really played well at all (except for a quarter or two here and there)---this series could easily be 3-1 in our favor if we had played with any consistency at all...
we need to come out and play one play at a time, one quarter at a time, one game at a time...
And we NEED TO MAKE FREE THROWS !!! if we had shot free throws with any kind of efficiency we could have possibly won all 4 games....
I would like to see the Lakers get a coach who stresses defense, free throw shooting proficiency and....wait for it.... the Pick and Roll....
AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, IT'S STILL YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!
GO LAKERS !!!

Why do I get the "stranger in the night" feeling that Shaq Daddy's is smiling as "Lil Bro" Kobe Jelly Belly Bryant (known to some at The Ultimate Robin) while eating a triple cheeseburger?
Just my pot belly, gut feeling.
Posted by: Let's go C's! | June 14, 2008 at 09:46 AM
second quarter - game 4 - I thought when the Lakers were running and gunning and missing shots, this was a problem.
I can think of Farmar pushing the ball, pulling up and missing a jumper. Even had he made it, they appeared a little bit "out of control" offensively.
All I can do know, is hope for a game six
Posted by: thomas | June 14, 2008 at 09:47 AM
Rick,
I'm with you.
I woke up this morning in a good mood. Nice and positive. I thought for sure that maybe Jon K was right and the cycle has turned the corner.
Something feels different.
You're right, the team CAN win 3 in a row, including two in Boston... shoot, many people thought they'd win 4 in a row including 2 in Boston... this team is powerful. They can do it, but if they will is a different question.
Just focus and win game 5.
Then give us a Laker effort in game 6.
If the Lakers get that far, I promise all the talk, all the speculation will be on the Celts and their "let down"...
But it starts here, in game 5.
Posted by: Tim-4-Show | June 14, 2008 at 09:49 AM
What happened to the "Greatest Player on the Planet" or
the "Greatest Player Ever"?
Isn't this what you Laker snots dream for? Kobe being the next Jordan?
Kobe ain't even close. Kobe for now is The Ultimate Robin, not the so called "Ultimate Closer".
Kobeer sure closed out Game 4. 24 point lead and the "Greatest Player on Earth" blows it. I don't rember Jordan blowing any games like that?
How many finals series did Jordan lose? None son!

Our Boston visitors appear to be drinking early this morning.
Speaking, or not, of politics, Mr. Russert's passing gives us all perspective on this game we care about. It can all go away in a heartbeat or lack thereof.
The Lakers have a bright future.
If they can throw off that debacle and respond with a win, that future will start tonight. Win or lose the ring, tonight is the difference between an optimistic summer and a wound that takes forever to heal.
It's a head game now.
Posted by: Vman | June 14, 2008 at 10:01 AM
As PJ said, my heart was also ripped out last Thursday. I can't imagine anything else that could happen in this series that will elicit the same kind of pain, even if we end up losing in game 7. The worst has happened in game 4.
Things happen for a reason. Maybe game 4 is THE wake up call we needed, as Rick F pointed out. Maybe that's what it takes for the real Lakers to show up.
History has practically written us off. So what do we have to lose? The pressure has been lifted. The spotlight is on the green men.
Let's go, Lakers!
Go, Lakers!

while beating this celtics team three times in a row seems impossible (and probably is impossible) especially with two games in Boston...looka t it this way
Its a home win which we are due for...a road win which we are due for ...then suddenly we are throwing it up in the air for a seventh game (in Boston of course) but still...theres a chance theres a chance theres a chance....

All you Kobe hatters come out of the wood works. I remember when Jordan came back to basketball and lost the ball in the championship game. Oh I guess everyone forgot the bulls got eliminated by the Knicks. Kobe is the best player in this league and soon as he has a bad game everyone criticize. The role players need to step up to the plate.
Posted by: The Kobester | June 14, 2008 at 10:42 AM
If the Lakers is going to prolong this series, PJ must be willing to try different line-up and rotation. Moving Pau to 4 and inserting MBenga at the same time is worth trying. PJ's stubborness is sometimes his biggest downfall--In my opinion, he should have played MBenga more early on during the playoffs, after knowing that AB will not be returning. The weakness in the paint is not something new--it's been there ever since Andrew's injury put him out of commission.
This series in not over yet. One game can change the total landscape. One "real" injury to Pierce that requires a wheel chair could happen, you know.. Fakers will have their judgement day!
Posted by: Robyn | June 14, 2008 at 10:43 AM
Winning 3 games in a row is a bit difficult task for the Lakers especially 2 at Boston but nothing is impossible.
I've read so many annoying comments from both Celtics and Lakers, Spurs and even Suns bloggers in this site with no good intentions... just to annoy Laker fanatics.
I've been reading this blog for 2 years.
Kudos to banner17 for bringing class to Celtics fans and Fire32 to Suns fans on this blog. Stay classy!!!!

Laker Fan 24:
Let me add that the odds of Lakers coming back is about the same as Gary Coleman coming back.
What ju talkin' bout Willis?
I think the late Chick Hern said it best: Lakers have two chances to come back, slim and none.
You snot nose fans have a nice day. I'll be back on Father's Day to gloat.
I may even stay around all summer long to add some spice to this "I love the Lakers" and "I love Kobe" fest.

Hold your head high Lakers fans in light of the grave situation we're in. As a frequent visitor and reader of this blog and long-time Lakers fan I believe we should count our blessings and understand that winning a championship requires the right formula.
Lakers making it to the finals is already a big bonus. At this juncture they're merely playing with house monies. One cannot truly attest to the championship caliber of this team at the start of this season given the unremarkable player acquisition and trade activities versus those by the Celtics, who managed to assemble an impressive roster consisting of defensive and offensive firepower. From inception Boston had built the kind of synergies worthy of capturing the championship. From the stifling defense espoused by the coaching staff and the veteran leadership of their Big Three to the timely contribution from different members of their underrated bench. Celtics was designed to win the championship from day one of the preseason, given the wholesale roster changes with the addition of NBA stalwarts in KG and Ray Allen and serviceable spare parts in Posey and House. The Lakers, on the flipside, made minimal changes and did not have the same championship aspiration as their east coast arch nemisis. The majority of pundits and fans had lower expectation of the Lakers being a lower seeded playoff team in the tough western conference. This mindset did not change until mid-season trade involving Pau Gasol which injected new life and championship ambition. But intrinsically the lakers did not have the core makeup to not only contend but win the championship because of the absence of center Bynum and the ineffectiveness of their so-called Bigs and the bench. Overall the Lakers overchieved this season based on the available resources and the Celts were simply better and more championship ready.
I am confident the Lakers braintrust will regroup in the offseason and concoct the right formula to win it all next season and many subsequent years. Going forward we only have to wait a few more months compared to the 20-something years that Boston had to underdo before the reached the big dance.

Just wanted to say, that it's great to read all the postive words and feelings that have been posted the past two days - you bloggers rock! (well, aside from the infiltrators but they're just pesky little gnats anyway. I laugh at them - ha!)

It's true that anything can happen, but Laker fans should remember one thing:
The Celts have already won 2 game 7's this post season, and a game 6 on the road, to close out Detroit.
So, no matter what "all the talk might be" if the lakers force a game 7, don't expect the C's to panic playing an elimination game at home for all the marbles.
Needing to play those game 7's were a big reason why people picked LA, but if you advance, those become valuable experiences. Advantage C's in game 7.
Frankly, i doubt it goes that far, but it is possible. Having seen the Sox come back, though, I have to say LA does not have the same chemistry as the 04 sox. How the Sox lost and who they lost too in 2003 created the will and stubborness to come back in 04. This looks like 2003 for the Lakers not 2004. Or, 1984 instead of 85.
Anyway, if C's pull it out it will be against the team I most fear and respect in Basketball, and will be as sweet as sox beating yanks. You will always be in the elite of the NBA, and it's nice to be chanting beat LA again and screaming "get him!" when you guys get flashy!
Posted by: RESPECT | June 14, 2008 at 11:52 AM
Game 5 prediction...
Lakers come out tight, C's struggle early, close game at halftime. Celtics dominate 3rd quarted...as has been the trend (all season not just this series)
Lakers quit playing hard, C's win by 13.
Take heart though Laker fans... your team is good, Kobe just needs to mature a bit more to be a true leader. Your team will be back to the finals soon enough. With San Antonio aging and Phoenix/Dallas past their prime you're the team to beat and will probably be favored to win it all at the start of next season. Seems like the balance of power is starting to shift to the eastern conference too. No more "Texas Triangle" to be afraid of. Good luck in game 5. I hope your team comes ready to bang for 48 minutes...I know mine will.
Celtics in 5

Hey LA. It is not the end of the world if the Lakers lose! I live in Worcester Massachusetts, 45 mile west of Boston. We saw our NE Patriots go 18 and 0, the lose in the final minutes of the Super Bowl. That was awful, but the sun still rises in the morning. Don't forget 2004, The Red Sox lost 3 games to start the AL Championship, then won 4 in a row! It had NEVER been done before. Don't give up until it is over.I am still rooting for the Celtics to end it tonight.
