I thought this might qualify. From the folks over at The Sports Hernia Blog. The photo's caption reads "Paul Pierce bravely shows up to play in Game 2."
Probably works better than the one I had about a priest, rabbi and Rajon Rondo walking into a bar.

I think phil Jackson made a huge tactical error by having the lakers peak too soon.
Meanwhile, Doc RIvers deftly worked his team to have them peak during the FInals.
We're going to have to start thinking of hiring Avery Johnson for head coach for these lakers. PJ just doesn't cut it anymore - look at what the SUNS did to him two years in a row. And now Doc Rivers is taking D'ANTONI'S blueprint and getting the same results.

The refs are throwing the series, so if the Lakers lose, it's not their fault, and if they win, it's not a valid championship.
Posted by: exhelodrvr | June 09, 2008 at 02:38 PM
Laker Fam,
I've been mostly quiet during the playoffs, whether the Lakers won or lost just waiting to see where this year would take us. But I got mad at how things have gone down in Boston until 7:23 in the 4th quarter, so I had to post. First Paul Pierce and his antics and the refs. Everybody knows that if you take Kobe out of the game, either by bogus foul calls or triple teaming him, you minimize the Lakers chance of winning.
Now we need to bring it for the next 16 quarters and this thing is done! Regardless of the rhetoric, the realities are these:
1. We were in game 1 until the final 1-3 minutes.
2. We were down 24 points with 7 minutes plus to go with the worse officiated NBA final game since D-Wade vs. Dallas and we cut it to 2, that's without LO or Derek playing well.
3. WE lost game 1 and 2 but even playing at our worse at the end of the day we still had a chance both times to beat the Celtics on their home floor.
4. The Lakers demonstrated for the world to see that they have what it takes to win, with or without the Refs on their side. Boston didn't lose a 24 point lead, the Lakers snatched all but 2 points from them. They didn't give us anything, we took it and now we need to keep on taking till we win the ship!
Forget the REF's, kick some Boston ass, make them pay. It's on!!!
Go Lakers!

Attention Boston fans - We can't stand SImers either. You're wasting your time coming on our blog to bag on him. I'm sure he's quite well pleased in himself to get under the skin of Boston fans since he's already mastered the art of ticking off the locals. Why exactly does this hack still have a gig?

I just wanted to share:
Whenever I watch a Lakers game, I have one of two emotions - excitement/happiness (when the Lakers are winning) or anger (when the Lakers are losing).
Game 2 in the NBA finals introduced a third emotion that I have never felt before - apathy. I found myself constantly switching to other channels during the game ... something I've never done before.
The only explanation ... the refs. They took the interest out of the game. So sad.

TIME TO BUST OUT THE SHOWTIME OFFENSE. A little bit of the old magic, so to speak, and by that I mean mostly run some made-bucket fastbreaks. Get the ball inbounds fast and go, we're the team more built to run, inside we can't bang with them, so force them to always be hurrying back on defense and don't let them get back IN their defense at all ideally. Utilize Kobe's skills here, get him out on made buckets and go, Go, GO. We have to change it up and play to some of our strengths. Fastbreak when we can, made-bucket break almost every time. Run them ragged, let Kobe get it in the open floor on the run as often as you can. And get Kareem to teach Pau the skyhook this afternoon. That'd help, too. Ahem.

After checking out Schilling's comments and the bombs being thrown by the various trolls here, I'm reminded of something that Forrest Griffin said last week on an episode of Ultimate Fighter. Even though you hate someone that talks a lot of smack you have to respect it when they're able to back it up.
Boston is enabling all their fans to talk as much smack as they want to Lakers fans b/c their team is backing it up with their play on the court. Even though Curt is a notorious jerk, can anyone really argue with what he's saying about Pau? What we really need is for the Lakers to play better basketball - to actually analyze what Boston wants to do on offense and take that away from them. I loved the energy that the team came out with to start game 2 regardless of the fouls. I'm hoping that the same aggression, combined with our (the Staples crowd's) support, they'll drop the hammer on the Celtics these next 2 games and show them that this is a series.

REPOST
Russell Ghost,
"If you remember...Perkins had the ball and faked Gasol out of his shoes. Gasol jumped up and on top of Perkins who was going up with the shot. THE FOUL WAS ON GASOL YOU MORON. POOR EXAMPlE.....He wasn't undercutting Gasol." - according to ghost
You called me a moron for that statement. Based on your response, you're truly an irresponsible leprechaun that comes into this blog with bloody intentions. Of course, that is foul on Gasol, but what I said is that IF YOU PLAY BASKETBALL IN ANY COURT, IN ANY COUNTRY WHAT PERKINS DID TO GASOL IS A DIRTY PLAY OF UNDERCUTTING. If you played basketball, you are familiar with this trick. That's similar to clotheslining a player, this time you do it with your body. Here is why it is a dangerous play? Gasol jumps to block the shot, Perkins fakes and let Gasol falls on his back. A player with CONSCIENCE will catch the player who is in the air, who has no control of his landing and about to fall in an awkward position. (That is not whining and that is not a moronic statement but a fact about sportsmanship conduct,) as a player you don't want to inflict injury on your opponent because of your desire to win a game by taking advantage of possible injury. THAT'S GREED AT ITS BEST, only dirty leprechaun like you will applaud those tactics. If you comprehend what is right and what is wrong, then don't consider basketball as a sport but ultimate combat. You're just a kid with foul language with a dirty mind, so you have the bile to come to this blog and call people by names when you, yourself don't get the message at all. If you have a brother, ask him to jump high and do this to him and see what will be his reaction.

I was listening on K570 this afternoon, according to Steve Hartman, the ratings of this NBA dream match up or rivalry is down in ratings for Game 2. It was up a little bit on Game 1 compared to SA vs. Cleveland but both games were down against the Lakers vs. Pistons. It was only 8.7 last night compared to 10.8 in 2004.
I have been discussing this subject matter with Vman on the heavy commercialization of the games which some people raised the possible conspiracy of the league to fix games. I don't believe it until legal evidences are presented but I think it has to do with the timing of the games. You see at 6pm in West Coast, it's 9 pm in the East Coast who are also being surveyed, therefore at the start of 4th quarter the spread was already 22 pts. and it was past 11 pm in the East Coast, how many households would switch to 11 news by then? However, why does Stern wants to start at 6pm - PLAIN GREED as well. He wants to get the audience of 60 minutes in the West and/or the 9pm Movies of the Week in the East and lump them all to his NBA Finals. It is ratings game but the results were down because officiating were flawed, Lakers have been intimidated and practically giving the game away. However, we rallied in the last 7 minutes, it is too late for the household living in the East and Midwest who have switched channels on perceived blown-up games. The ideal time was 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm in the East, everyone will be relaxed but those dead hours without any competitive match ups.
As the pastor of the blog, Utzworld, the Banner Holder will say to David Stearns: "The truth will set you free: The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh it away."

Hmrhead and Pfunk 36,
Three consecutive wins in Laker land, that is not impossible.
To my fellow bloggers who are now in quandary to lose hope when faith is just beginning, stick with the purple and gold. Yes, our players are human, they lost 2 games in Boston and that is not surprising at all on what we have seen in the last two games.
Tuesday is a new life for the Lakers, let's pray, fight and boost the morale of our players. The tasks are not that impossible, it high bar but I know they can do it if they only focus on the prize and play with their minds, their hearts and their strenghts that they can overcome the challenge.
Fellow Laker fans we have come a long way to witness the abyss of our team
* when our Superstars collided and split the loyalties of players and fans
* when we rebuilt with no name players like Tierre Brown, Jumaine Jones, Chet Atkins, T. Bobbit etc with Rudy T quitting on the team at the middle of the season.
* when we competed in 2005-06 with Smush, Cookie and kwame which led 3-1 but lost in the next three games
* when we sticked with Kwame and all the fundametally weak scrubs with the common belief that we need only few players to be on the top
* when we almost lost entirely our faith with the team and becomes a lottery pick forever
* when we revived this year and came a long way to reach unthinkable heights...topping the West and conquering the Western playoffs....
Must we quit now by just being being behind by 0 - 2. Boston Celtics may be a good defensive team but unless they play a fair and square game, I am not a believer that we are the subservient team. We are a better team, it remains to be proven on the next three game in our city under our no lights stadium.
PS. Ms. Paula can't do the same tricks again in his own neighborhood, let the Laker fans in Inglewood take care of his shenanigans in Games 3. 4 and 5. He got the Bostonians worshipping him as the truth but to the Inglewood bro/sis, they will not allow his faking truth unfold in our very eyes.
Have faith with the purple and gold. We have been in this blog for quite sometime in discussing the prospects of this team. Let us all UNITE into one. Let us unfold the true Laker brand of basketball slash and burn, hit and run, Celtics have the muscle while Lakers have the speed. Win for the sake of Socks. Cheer for the sake of our beloved Chick Hearn.
I believe that the Lakers past is not the Lakers present.
Posted by: Edwin Gueco | June 09, 2008 at 05:11 PM
Of course, when ESPN 2 puts on "Great Fixed Games of the Shaq-Kobe Era" (blame Bill Simmons) and shows all those playoff games that were turned with huge free throw discrepancies in favor of the Lakers, I'm sure all of you will be righteously arguing why the Lakers didn't deserve those championships. Phil Jackson, of course (hey, didn't he coach those games?) will be first in line.

STILL NOTHING BETTER THAN BEING A LAKERS FAN…
Despite an unprecedented wave of anti-Kobe, Laker-hating refs and annoying bandwagon Celtic-loving trolls, it was great to see the blog’s regulars fighting thru this virtual storm to post positive greetings and confidence in our Lakers. Count me among the faithful and dedicated fans who still view this latest adversity as just more of the predictable drama to be overcome in this already miraculous and unbelievable Lakers season.
The Celtics may think that they have the Lakers in a hole but realistically all they have accomplished despite all their roar is barely hold serve for the first 2 games of the series. Starting tomorrow night, it will be the Lakers turn to serve for the next 3 games, which I believe the Lakers will sweep. Despite doubts from the flip-flopping media, the Lakers are still the only team in the playoffs that has won all of its home games.
When you look at what happened in Boston, you have to give credit to the Celtics for outplaying the Lakers despite the unconscionable disparity in free throw attempts. I never blame an entire game on the officials because the team’s job is not allow the game to be close enough that the officials can affect the outcome. However, the 19 to 2 disparity in foul shots in the 1st half last night made it almost impossible for the Lakers to win.
Frankly, I don’t think I have ever seen such a disparity in fouls shots as the 19-2 first half edge or the 38-10 game edge that the officials gave the Celtics over the Lakers last night. Has anyone checked the record books or heard any media comments about the disparity? I would think that it has to rank as one of if not the greatest ever in an NBA Finals game. Why did the Lakers, who shot 28 free throws in Game 1 (to Boston’s 35) but were more aggressive last night, only earn 10 trips to the line? Maybe the games are fixed.
More likely, you have overzealous refs getting caught up in the roar of the home town fans and displaying their natural bias against Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers by taking advantage to reward the more aggressive Celtics and penalize the complaining Lakers. It’s the typical situation that starts out slow and then snowballs as the refs compound their earlier missed calls with more bias and more calls favoring the Celtics. Phil has done a good job complaining and I suspect we will see a reversal of fortunes in LA.
One thing I will complement the Celtics on is their defense scheme protecting the paint. Of course, it helps when you can beat the hell out of anybody who penetrates without the whistle blowing. At any rate, Tom Thibodeau has definitely provided the Celtics with a great defensive scheme which has allowed KB and a bunch of really mediocre defensive players to play great team defense. Faith and I and several other Lakers bloggers have proposed the Lakers hiring Michael Cooper to be the Lakers defensive coach. Maybe after the Finals the team will finally consider that as a possible option.
At any rate, the Lakers are now definitely on the edge of losing this series to the Celtics. They need to win all three games at home convincingly to steal back the momentum from the Celtics and send the series back to Boston for the last 2 games with the Lakers up 3-2. If the Celtics steal a game at Staples, then I do not see the Lakers being able to recover and win 2 games in Beantown. Lakers need to sweep the 3 games at Staples. Anything less will result in a disappointing ending to the Lakers perfect storm of a season.
Needless to say, we all know how different the story would have been had the Lakers had
Andrew Bynum inside to counter the Boston. Andrew would have changed the entire dynamics of the series, as the Celtics will learn next year. So give the Celtics credit for seizing the moment because they know that this is their best and maybe last chance to win a title for a long time because Andrew Bynum will end parity in the NBA in 2009.

Really J Dawg?
You didn't watch those games now did you J Dawg? Its not about the free throw discrepancy, its about the context of play. Shaq was an automatic score, so people fouled him. He's in the lane and people intentionally held his arms. I'm sure half the fouls weren't called. The Kings were a perimeter team with jumpshooters and the Princeton offense, with its focus on high post passing big men, and flares or back doors. Not exactly physical, foul worthy basketball....
What you had yesterday was 2 evenly matched teams that took the ball to the hole. They fought just as hard for rebounds, putbacks, etc. Lakers get called for fouls that are going on on both sides and our guys are handcuffed. Lakers had more attempts in the paint- and yet no fouls.
But you're not oversimplifying things for the sake of discussion, NOOOOOO.

REASONS WHY THE LAKERS WILL WIN THE SERIES
* The Laker haven't played a good game yet. They're due.
* No way a Phillip Jackson coached team is going to lose 5 games in a row to the same team
* If Miami can come back 0-2, so can the Lakers
* WE HAVE 3 GAMES AT HOME, WHERE WE ARE 8-0!!!
* Of the 4 games this year the Celts have won; the 2nd game was when the Lakers wore those short shorts, and didn't take it serious; the 3rd game, the Lakers were rusty from being off so long, and plus, we were playing on the road; the 4th game David Stern and his mafia cohorts made the refs an offer they couldn't refuse
* Kobe Bryant is the league MVP for a reason. He will shine.
* Pau Gasol is getting his rhythm and his confidence, and when Pau is on, that brings Lamar into the fold
* Sasha or Vlad are due for big 3 point shooting nights
* the Celts and Paula Pierce are due for a bad game.
* the Celts are poor road team
* the Celts are now the favorites, meaning they're not the underdogs anymore and so all the pressure is on them
* the Lakers realize they're playing a better team in the Celtics, that they'll be better next year with Bynum, and that no one expects them to come back 0-2, so they have nothing to lose, and will play looser
* if you think about it, all the Celtics did was hold their home court. We do that, we're up 3-2...
* the Celts have a tendency of getting tired; the Lakers are much more fresher
* every other team the Celts have played this playoffs has taken them to at least 6 games.
I'm telling you something right now, the Celtics ARE A BETTER TEAM, but who cares. The Lakers WILL WIN THE SERIES 4-2.
Posted by: troy | June 09, 2008 at 05:32 PM
Oh, and BUTLER,
I'd rather see the Celts win it then your Suns. At least our Lakers MADE it the the finals, you guys never did, and won't now that your coach has bailed on you.
Look to the Sac Queens to see your fate for next several years.
Posted by: troy | June 09, 2008 at 05:34 PM
Not one serious Celtic fan thinks this series is over. All we've done is win at home. Hate the 2-3-2 format.
I see a lot of complaining about the free throws. Maybe you have a point, until you look a bit closer.
Fouls: Celtics 21
Lakers 28.
The problem was not the fouls but where the Lakers were when the fouls were committed. Not In The Paint!!
I've been truly disapointed with the play of the Lakers up to this point. I was expecting a knock down, drag out fight. Instead, what I'm seeing is a team that doesn't want to earn the championship. They think they should just be anointed.
One play stands out from game 2. Powe receiving a pass at 1/4 court and driving at full speed to slam it between 3 Lakers. No one stepped up to knock Powe on his a**. There isn't one Celtic that wouldn't have stepped up to that challenge.
That is why the C's will win.
Posted by: banner17 | June 09, 2008 at 05:35 PM
complex,
You are absolutely right that the Lakers need to man up. That coast-to-coast uncontested dunk by Leon Powe was tantamount to quitting on the game by the Lakers. If they had stopped that play, the game might well have been tied 102-102 with a minute left to go.
Take heart because at least our “boys” will be on their home school yard for the next 3 games. I know it shouldn’t take 20K fans in the seats to give them some balls, but it sure don’t hurt to have a angry posse of Lakers fans having your back. Guys like Pau and Luke need that to put up their dukes and be men. This week our boys become men.
And you better believe that the freaking zebras and going to hear it from Lakers fans because Kobe and every player on the team is going to attack the rim and boards with murderous intent. I think you will see this Lakers team rise up and take the Celtics down in 4 straight double-digit victories to close out the Celtics in 6 in Boston’s face.
As to my ingrained hatred and disrespect for the Celtics and everything Shamrock, the coup de grace will be ending this series in 6 games in the “Garden.” That will be sweet. We’ll save the celebration in LA to the parade this year. It’s a pattern we’ll have to get used to since future sweeps of the Finals will always be on the opponents court due to their poorer regular season record. Close Finals on the Road. Save Parades for Home.

I think we're in no worse shape down 0-2 than we were when the series started. Of course the Celtics won the first two, of course we're going to win all three in Los Angeles and barring a miracle in Boston (God, buddy, don't you owe me one from that baptism thing when I was 17?) the Celtics will both on their home floor.
That's just the way this thing was designed. As someone else pointed out the Celtics vs. Lakers finals match up has already be approved by NBA thru the 2015 season. As part of the deal each team has to win a Championships in one of their first two meetings as to assure a clash of the titans 80esqe match up of champions.
And, as per the plan, the Celtics will be demolished tomorrow. Take heart Laker fans, tomorrow we win by twenty!

Curt Schilling's on Kobe Bryant in The Boston Globe
"Who doesn't know Kobe Bryant right?," asks Schilling. "I only know what I have heard, starting awhile back with the entire Shaq debacle. I don't really have an opinion one way or the other on or about him other than to know that people feel he might be one of the 4-5 greatest players to ever lace it up. What I do know is what I got to see up close and hear, was unexpected. From the first tip until about 4 minutes left in the game I saw and heard this guy bitch at his teammates. Every TO he came to the bench pissed, and a few of them he went to other guys and yelled about something they weren't doing, or something they did wrong. No dialog about 'hey let's go, let's get after it' or whatever. He spent the better part of 3.5 quarters pissed off and ranting at the non-execution or lack of, of his team. Then when they made what almost was a historic run in the 4th, during a TO, he got down on the floor and basically said 'Let's f'ing go, right now, right here' or something to that affect.

"I am not making this observation in a good or bad way, I have no idea how the guys in the NBA play or do things like this, but I thought it was a fascinating bit of insight for me to watch someone in another sport who is in the position of a team leader and how he interacted with his team and teammates. Watching the other 11 guys, every time out it was high fives and 'Hey nice work, let's get after it' or something to that affect. He walked off the floor, obligatory skin contact on the high five, and sat on the bench stone faced or pissed off, the whole game. Just weird to see another sport and how it all works. I would assume that's his style and how he plays and what works for him because when I saw the leader board for scoring in the post season his name sat up top at 31+ a game, can't argue with that. But as a fan I was watching the whole thing, Kobe, his teammates and then the after effects of conversations. He'd yell at someone, make a point, or send a message, turn and walk away, and more than once the person on the other end would roll eyes or give a 'whatever dude' look."
Observing the Celtics' efforts, Schilling was clearly impressed with Kevin Garnett and how he handles himself on the court. "His eyes are on the floor, or the ball, all game," writes Schilling. "What an incredible pleasure it is to watch and be a fan of. I am blown away in that he came out of high school, something that can be a huge disadvantage, and has ALWAYS maintained who he was purported to be ...
"Last night KG goes to the line, Lamar Odom (who I became a fan of last night) is saying 'Hey KG why don't you help on the ball down here?' Pointing to the paint, and I am guess referencing the fact that KG wasn't down in the paint mixing it up. He says it again, loudly, KG doesn't even acknowledge him, and sinks both. Impressive, total focus."

It's one thing for the fans to hail the freethrow disrepancy...even the biased calls.
It's another thing for AK to do it. For the media as a whole to do it. For Charley Rosen (Rosen for crying out loud!) to do it.
Go Lakers!
