Question of the Day

June 16, 2008 |  6:20 pm

Lucky_charms_2  So I was listening to Mason and Ireland this afternoon on the radio machine, and John Irleand, who is an unapologetic Lakers booster, was talking about all the good-luck guests they might be able to book for Tuesday's show before Game 6.  Shamans, priests, rabbis, Kreskin, that guy who bends the spoons - anyone who might have some positive vibes to offer.  Obviously Lakers fans are feeling the same way - any rubbable rabbit's foot gets rubbed, any pluckable four leaf clover gets plucked.   Fans, like players, are superstitious animals, and many have their own particular way of bringing good luck to their squad of choice. The particular habits of our readers we've covered in the past.  But just for funsies, I want to present the following hypothetical:

Obviously the Lakers need to win two games in Boston to hoist the Larry O'Brien.  Let's say you have one crack at your good luck charm.  Tuesday or Thursday, but not both.  Use it on Tuesday, and the Lakers will be on their own in the close-out game.  Choose Thursday, and they may never get there ... but if they do, the power of your lucky charm virtually guarantees a title.  What do you do?

Personally, I use it up in Game 6, and leave the boys to handle their own business on Thursday, but some of you might be gamblers by nature.

Game 6 for sure. We win tomorrow and Boston is shaking in their boots. We'll have them right where we want them, on their heels. Plus I see Boston coming out with crazy energy tomorrow night so if we can pull out a win they will be bummed and we'll be in their heads for game 7.

GO LAKERS

we will get blown out in game 6
celtics by 20
you heard it here first

Absolutely game 6. If the lucky charm allows me to chose how the win comes about, I chose a miracle 3 by Pau Gasol from beyond half-court at the buzzer.

That'll make the Celtic fans happy, not (and as long as I know before hand I won't have to throw anything at the television).

IF the Lakers win tomorrow, and I believe they will, then they should be able to close it out on Thursday. Tuesday is a huge game for the Lakers in that respect. Win it and the series is tied 3-3. The momentum is on their side for game 7, and the Celtics are in big trouble.
There is enormous pressure on the Celtics to win tomorrow, to close it out, and I think that psychologically will affect them in a negative way. The Lakers in the last three games have been amazing in the first quarter. If they continue that tomorrow with continued energy/aggressiveness, getting the Celtic bigs in foul trouble, the Lakers should prevail.

i use it in game 7, because if they deserve to get to the game seven, they'll win game 6

and if they lose game 6 then i can keep my lucky charm for next year haha

Kobe Bryant is the only good luck charm the Lakers need in game 7.

It's pretty simple.

If I try and record the game on my DVR by programming it ahead of time, they lose. Games must be watched live, using only the basic 20 minute buffer on the DVR (if any), but not actually recording the game to disk. Replay broadcasts can be recorded safely.

So basically I'll be watching both games at home, LIVE, so 2 Laker wins should follow.

You've gotta use it in game 6 to guarantee that game 7. I have faith our squad could handle a game 7. We just need to make sure to get there.

With Perkins a probable no-go, there is no reason the Lakers can't win this game. Gasol should be able to score and rebound at will, unless Garnett is on him, and in tha case Odom should shold be able to score and rebound with ease.

We can do this.

Wes

BK,

I'd have to throw away the lucky charm. I know I know, I'm talking crazy but I'm saying so cuz I think it's the same answer the laker players would give. They'd want to earn it.

Yes Boston has turned up the heat on us, but it is in the heart of the furnace that the blade is forged. They know not that they are helping mold and shape the very weapon that will annihilate them, their's will be a testimonial to the birth of dynasty.

My heart believes in what my brain fears is improbable, my heart believes in #24 being better than #23, and my heart believes in a showtime remake that will be better than the original. They wanna play defense, we'll play four first quaters and drop 40 on their a$$ consistently, let's see them defend that.

Many on here are probably hoping our team does not go silently into the night, I'm hoping we send the celtics kicking and screaming into the night. Matter of fact BK, I'll take that lucky charm from you mix it with my hopes and send a prayer up with all the other laker fans out there. The celtic arena might be louder than staples, but i been on this blog long enough to know their hopes are not louder than ours, show me a pierce fan that bleeds for Kobe the same way we do. We filled with love yo, nothing but love for that man and his team. So yea gimme that charm and bend a knee with me in prayer.

Run lakers, run run and run some more.
Go Lakers!!!

I just wish Kobe will play a complete "Magic" type game...20 points..10 reb...10 asst. Kobe claims he can get off at any time(on the court)tomorrow would be a good time to start....The Lakers usually win when someone else has a good game(why he s never been a final mvp)but Kobe needs to dominate the next two games...Defense..and Offense.....Rebounding and Passing......Scoring and whatever else it takes!!!!!

That's a no brainer - without game 6 there is no game 7. You made me realize I had a good luck rabbit's foot all along I haven't been using! I'll have to get my rabbit to hold still while I rub it for luck but I think I can make that happen.
We're all set now!

wholy, thats crazy! WHY WOULD SOMEONE EVEN DO THAT?

But i would split it, because since we can't close games id use half of it to close out game 6 and the other have to close out game 7. Because mostly all series we have come out with leads and blown them minus maybe game 2. But we still got back and didn't close out.

2k

Go Lakers, show heart and passion!!!!!

Use it Tuesday definitely.

Game 7 is fairgame...not only coz the confidence boost that will bring, but also we got the ace in the hole.

But tuesday is iffy. I have faith we'll get er done...but still lol.

Go Lakers!

yeah, i'll use it on tuesday and leave the guys on thursday. i still remember an old basketball movie by the wayans brother wherein the better brother who played basketball died, and the responsibility now was handed to the younger brother who is also good but not as good as the one who died. plot of the story, the ghost of the elder brother helps the team back to glory, but on the championship night, the younger brother asked the elder brother to help them as the team can already do it by themselves (they eventually got better anyway). bottomline, whatever happens, we just have to let it go.
\m/ go Lakers! Let's roll!

yours truly,
erick, the true laker fan

How about Andrew Bynum? Looks like he's going to be doing something called, "Breakfast with Bynum" which... sounds absolutely hilarious to begin with but I bet he could give us some good insights since he's around the team yet, can't play:

http://www.andrewbynum.com/

Kobe Bryant's averages in PTS and FG % during the Finals in his career. As you can see, he's done very well when the going get tough. He's also shown to be clutch and a great performer during the Finals.

Awesome stats. Thanks to Lakers.com for providing these.

Without a doubt, the most overrated player ever.

Pacers - 15.6 Pts, 36 FG %

76ers - 24.6 Pts, 42 FG %

Nets - 26.8 Pts, 51 FG %

Pistons - 22.6 Pts, 37 FG %

Celtics - 26.4 Pts, 42 FG %

Surprised this fact hasn't been brought up by the national media.

Strange how not one of the reporters have asked Kobe why his shooting percentage and production are dramatically lower than his regular season stats.

So Bryant being a big game performer is more than fallacy. It's the absolute truth.

Need a reminder? Just rethink yesterday's game. This is the Lakers season on the line. The biggest game of the year. The biggest game of Bryant's career (1st Finals appearance as head honcho).

What does he do?

Shoot poorly.

How can one be considered "clutch" if they don't perform on the biggest stage?

Sure nobody expects 100% success rate because that's impossible.

But LOOK AT THE STATS. Bryant's performed MISERABLY in his career in the Finals.

Those shooting percentages and drop off in production is disappointing for ANY player.

Let's alone the supposed "best player" in the game.

Look at the stats again.

Stunning, huh?

The truth may hurt but it's better to wake up before you're too deep inside the rabbit hole.

GO LAKERS!

I BELIEVE!

I'm not the superstitious sort, and gave up my rabbits foot when I was 12 years old, but...

If I had a one-game wish, it would be that the Lakers win, and win decisively on tuesday, annilating the Celts, giving them a spanking that will be felt, painfully, well into thursday.

The "V" will add confidence to our boyz, who can then take matters, with or without any luck, into their own hands for game 7.

Gotta go with BK on this one. When we get Game 6, all bets are off on Game 7. But Game 6 is one that the Celts will definitely have an advantage. Not as much pressure since they know they got 2 cracks at it. But Game 7? Don't matter who got home court, that one's going to the team with the most cajones, and with number two four on our side, I'll take our chances.

Excellent question, BK. I'm with you on this one, use it up on game 6. The untameable and mystical winds of chance that permeate game 7's from the halls of the Basketball Gods would be impervious to any good luck charm anyway.

Definitely use it on Game 7.

Why?

Because the NBA front office will take care of getting this to Game 7. They, of course, want an impartial game for Game 7, winner take all. So my luck ritual will be the difference. To me this answer is obvious!! Duh!

BTW, lakers_sth, why did you have to watch Game 4 on the tele??

Can you afford to scalp some Boston tickets to Games 6 & 7. The blog can probably raise funds to get you there etc. This is important. I don't think it's the tele thing, it's the LIVE thing. We need you at these games...

Lakers in 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have FAITH?

Can you BELIEVE it?

I can!!

Wearing my Farmar jersey a day before game 5...he plays a lot better last sunday

take out any opposing team colors around the house....this time is GREEN!!

Definitely use it now to force game 7.

I would have to say game 6.

But luckily for me, I asked my genie for more wishes as my wish... now the genie is screwed and has to grant both games.

Ha ha ha. Luck, it's a funny thing sometimes!

I've already talked about how I will not watch game 6 since every game I've watched on tv during the finals has been a loss. I'm taking a client out to dinner so it won't be that difficult. So I'm using it tomorrow and leaving the boys to pull it out for game 7.

btw - I wore two sets of lakers beads and a necklace the candy vendor gave me during game 5 of the WCF to the game last night. those were my good luck charms. The beads were bought by my gf in New Orleans while missing Kobe's 81 pt game. the Lakers were undefeated in 06 when I had them on.

The season can't end tomorrow!!! What am I suppose to watch...Dog Whisperer? Hells Kitchen? Obama and McCain calling each other the anti-Christ? This sucks, is it October yet?

Go Lakers and Thanks for the Great Year!!!

BD

6 - duh.

If 7 is truly impartially officiated, we'd never lose. IE - whistles on holds and moving screens. Let's see it refs. Grow a pair and call the c's on their thuggery.

Tuesday...one game at a time...

Magic Johnson
James Worthy
Kareem Abdul-Jabaar
Michael Cooper
Jerry West

Or anyone who was on the team who beat the Celtics in 1985 Lakers NBA Championship.

GO LAKERS!

Listen. It is all about Game Six. All about Game Six. And I feel so good about it. Game Seven heavily favors us. And we won Game Five under very similar Bio-Chrono conditions to Game Six.

And the Celtics plane had mechanical problems. They'll have less rest than us. And they're older. And they're hurt.

I can hardly wait for Game Six.

My heart is practically beating out of my chest.

In the spirit of Tim-4-Show, I can see it.

I can feel. it.

I believe.

We win through unity.

Unity.

Let's go.

GO LAKERS!

Hey folks. Sorry for slow updating. I'm having some issues with the ol' puter. (Currently on my wife's) For some reason, I can connect to my server to get email, but can't connect to the web. Weird. All IT suggestions should be sent to kambrothers@yahoo.com.

Thanks!

BK

Game 6

and my girl can use hers for game 7...

world champs

Jeffs Aho:
I was wondering , whether you checked the stats on other players in the NBA Finals , like MJ, Shaq, Magic and Bird.
I am going to look it up right now.

I do not think , its possible to increase field goal percentage in the Finals because the defense is so much better , or so I believe.

game 6 for sure. i dont believe kobe would let us lose game 7. game, because that game will be all about desire..game 6 gives the celtics the advantage so id say a lucky charm could not hurt.

I am sure lakers would have no problem winning game 6

novolakers - i agree and curious what you find out

I use it on Game 6 and let our boys handle Game 7 on their own.
Speaking of Lucky Charms and or Rituals, I never watch a Laker game without my trusty "Ocho" Bryant Jersey. After the disappointing Game 4 I decided to nix the jersey and all of my pre-game rituals. I boldly watched the game in whatever I happened to be wearing yesterday which interestingly enough was green dress (A Celtics green shade mind you). So now I have a dilemma for tommorrow my Kobe jersey or that green dress? Decisions Decisions.....

I'd use my luck for game 6 because if this thing goes 7, it's an instant classic regardless of who wins. With that being said, Go Lakers!

If by "good luck charm" we mean "definitely win one game" then I'll pick game 6.

We have to win one more game after that anyways, but the Celts will be less desperate (and theoretically easier to deal with) in game 6 than game 7.

Wes,

Perkins told David Aldridge last night after the game that he WILL PLAY in game 6.

Just so there's no surprises, no willis reed like surprise. Perkins will play.

Game 6 - let's not be greedy here and assume we're getting to a game 7.

I have more faith in letting the chips fall where they may IF it gets to a game 7. But man, we better be prepared for game 6. Them boys in greed are gonna be ready. And I expect Perkins to have one of those shoulder wraps that Dale Davis had when the pacers made the finals against us.

This is definitely going to be tough. We have to be active, smart, relentless and fearless - the Celts are ready to throw down. Question is, are we?

novolakers

don't bother. Jeffs Aho is just a kobe hater.

regardless of what happens tonight, the lakers need to trade odom. he is too inconsistent, not a great shooter, and will clog the lane with bynum coming back. we need a reliable scorer and defender from the 3. that is why we should trade for ron artest. he is a monster on both ends of the floor but obviously special on defense. this guy can shut down the other teams' best player which will allow kobe to save his energy for running the offense. not to mention, phil likes to coach these types of players (ala rodman) and artest has made it no secret that he would love to play for the lakers, plus he absolutely adores kobe. are you listening kupchack, get it done!

Ladies and Crybabies

You all got "lucky" in Game 5.

I'll see you girls after Game 6.

Having said that, you all deserve the win.

Your "superstarlet" (Kobeef) played like a panzy, but the super roleplayers like Gasol and Odom stepped up, so I have to give your team some credit.

Well done ladies and see you tomorrow at the ball game.

Don't forget to bring your pillow to cry on after the game.

hahahaahahahaahahahhahahaahah

Let's go C's!

We won't need the good luck charm, but for the sake of discussion, I use it in Game 6. It's sort of like using your Hall of Fame starting pitcher in Game 6 when you are down 3-2. Got to scrape and claw to win and live to play another day. The most under stated characteristic of this team has been its heart - the ability to dig deep and do what no one thought possible. I said it before Game 5, but Boston is cracking - fatigue, injuries, and pressure are taking its toll. They are on the verge of their 3rd 7 game series. Doc Rivers has been preaching "mental toughness" At some point, just the very reminder to be mentally tough begins to take its toll. The great ones don't need reminding. Our youth will prove to be a strength in this series. I'm tired of the crap being spewed by John Barry - if you listened to him, you would think we have been completely outplayed this whole series. We have had chances to win every game. This whole "greatest comeback in NBA Finals History" is also a load of crap. Hell, we whittled a 24 point deficit into a two point deficit in 6 minutes - on the road. Remember the 20 point comeback against the Spurs? Let's accomplish the only NBA Finals first that really matters - coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the series. BELIEVE IT!!!

preventing my jinx friend/partner to watch the game......4/5 he watch lakers broadcast ...we ended up losing ....he even watched 2nd half of game 4 ... I'll make sure he don't watch the game

1-28.

I'm an incredibly superstitious Lakers fan. This Lakers team, though, has helped me feel a touch less superstitious. I feel like they can win even when I don't perform my random obsessive compulsive good luck tasks.

All I want for this Lakers team is a shot at Game 7. Just a shot. If they can get there, they can do it.

1-28. Believe it.

I've been believing all season long.

Go Lake Show!
