No Staples viewing in Game 6
Those of you planning on heading to Staples Center to watch Game 6 with a few thousand of your friends will need to find another plan. The Lakers, in consultation with local law enforcement, have canceled the viewing party. From Lakers PR:
After meeting with law enforcement and city representatives, we have agreed to not open STAPLES Center for a public showing of any upcoming playoff games from Boston.
Because of concerns for resources needed to ensure the safety of fans throughout Los Angeles on nights when the games would be played as well as potential financial burdens on various City departments, we came to this decision.
On behalf of the Los Angeles Lakers, we encourage all of our fans to enjoy the upcoming games with friends and family and celebrate the championship run in a safe, responsible and respectful manner.
Too much of this sort of thing going on, I suspect.
BK

BK,
Personally, I'm A-OK with that sort of thing.
I know it's not very politically correct, but someone wearing a Celtics jersey in Staples Center should fear for their very life, as far as I'm concerned.
Let's be serious. If you walk into a biker bar with a Greenpeace shirt on and begin lecturing people about how motorcycles are contributing to global warming and should be banned, well, you're looking for trouble.
If you walk into Staples wearing a Celtics jersey, you're lookiing for trouble.
And Lakers fans should probably assist you in getting what you're looking for. It's only civil of us.
GO LAKERS!

Not that Im promoting violence...but that was awesome. We need more of those people at the regular games. I'm pretty sure that we could scare the Celtics, especially with some of those guys yelling "Crips" at Paul Pierce the whole night.
Anyhow, as for the game itself, if you read the papers, it almost seems as though some of the life was sucked out of the Celtics. They really thought they were going to win it last night. Michael Eves mentioned on the Fox post game that Boston had already planned a party (Im assuming at a club or something) for last night, probably hosted by Paul Pierce and his closest friends. They way it is going right now, the stage is set for a dramatic Game 7.
Going into Game 6, the pressure is still on Los Angeles to win, but if they can get out to another early lead, the pressure will fall squarely on Boston. Theyve already mentioned that they are a bit tired of playing come from behind basketball and its taking a toll. If you saw Paul Pierce after the game he looked exhausted. He played the whole 48 minutes.
The Lakers must look to Gasol for some inside scoring and also to Odom to draw some fouls. I am going to assume that Perkins is playing because Boston is feeling enough heat to not want to play a Game 7. I believe in a do or die situation like a Game 7 gives the Lakers an advantage because of Kobe Bryant. They know he hasn't had a good game yet in this series. And as Kobe has mentioned, he much rather take a 1 game sudden death chance for a championship over a whole series anyday. That scares Boston.
If somehow the Lakers grind out another Game 6 win, Boston will be afraid. Think of this: If the Lakers were up 3-2 right now and on the brink of an NBA championship, who would you call the Finals MVP? Has Kobe really played a great series? Has Pau done anything? No Lakers performance is yet to make you amazed. The Lakers have yet to play at their best, and that includes Kobe. EVENTUALLY, law of averages has to come out, and the Lakers have to end up with their peak game. Its either going to be Game 6 or 7.

Agreed, we are in a recession and saving the city money that can go to important matters, Schools, Wildfires, Mayoral expense accounts.
Lakers, we need to play two of the best games we have played all year. The defense needs to be stepped up. Lets win this one and keep those celts reeling into a game 7. Kobe, this is the one where you need to be unstoppable, put it all on the line. Gasol, Odom, Fish circle the wagons, we can make history!!

No loss there, watching it on a big screen anywhere in the city should be just fine. I can understand the city of Los Angeles not wanting us to go nutz inside of Staples after we kick Boston's beans in BOSTON! LAKERS WE BELIEVE !

Well....I suppose it's ok. Wouldn't it be ironic if the fans at staples (if they opened it for game 6) made more noise for the Lake Show than they did for Game 5 (or 4 or 3, for that matter)?
I'm assuming that Mitch and Co. didn't want that type of embarrassment.
Posted by: Caliphilosopher | June 16, 2008 at 01:50 PM
Saying that any of what those idiots were doing at Staples in that video is okay is almost as unacceptable as actually doing it.
I'm a passionate Lakers fan and will defend them in any argument, but when people like the morons in the video start to actually act out on feelings about the other team, they are crossing the line. I understand that those two Cetics fans were taking a risk in wearing their jerseys to the viewing, but they shouldn't have to worry about their physical safety.
Those fans only reinforce the widely held public belief outside of Lakerland that we're all a bunch of chollos or gangbangers. Let's not reinforce it with upholding that kind of BS behavior.

Sonnybelfast.
I am glad you're alright. Humboldt was home for a minute (OK, a year; my freshman year; that was fun) and it's near and dear. Hopefully everyone will come together to support those that suffered losses. And hopefully too many crops weren't harmed....
On to other business. Larry, put me on the big belief bandy. If it can swallow the kind of loss it did in game 4 and come back that strong in game 5, this team can do anything.
Plus, one of these days, Kobe's going to put together at least three strong quarters in a game.
Posted by: Jesterguru | June 16, 2008 at 01:56 PM
When we won game 4 in Denver, fans were throwing stuff at me.
I kept my mouth shut. I wasn't even wearing Lakers gear (though my shirt was yellow), I had an MVP sign, no Lakers logo... and the fans still assaulted me after the game. I wasn't taunting or saying anything, except when the Lakers went into the tunnel I would yell good game, or whatever.
The fans were just mad about their team losing, and decided to take it out on me & a few others in the stands.
Now, I wasn't at Staples, but it appeared there was a lot going on BEFORE this clip started. If this Celtics fan was taunting and saying mean things, then well.... I don't condone the assault, but he asked for it. If he was just minding his own business and the Laker fans heckled him, then those Laker fans are truly despicable.
We're better than that!
From the looks of it, this Celtics fan appeared to be taunting. This clip goes on and on before the guy gets clocked. I'm guessing he didn't know how to shut his mouth, so the guy shut it for him.
Just a guess.
Whoever threw the cup was a moron (unless they were a Celtic fan)
Either way, horrible display of unsportsman like conduct.
There will be some rough and tough Celtic fans bent out of shape on Tuesday and it will be even WORSE on Thursday.
AK (whenever you get a chance to read this) be very careful.

In regards to ABC coverage, they are so Pro-Celtic, it's sick. THey are probably going to beat the Local Boston Announcers in being Pro-Celtic. I mean, the whole five games, they are always "Doc Rivers said". For everytime they go ask PJ something during the game, the've asked Doc 5 times. It's sick.
Then, at the end of Game 5, Jon Berry was highly critical of the Lakers, even though they had just won. I understand it was not a great game by the Lakers, and you can say it, but, he just kept hacking at them and Kobe Bryant. Even more offensive was before the game, he was basically suggesting the Lakers tank this game to get it over with, as what was the point in returning to Boston to lose.
In Games 1 & 2, given that Boston was winning, I thought that is why they kept praising boston, but even after game 3 and during the first half of game 4, they kept talking about Boston and what they had to say.
Even with KG struggling, nothing is said of him, yet they bash Kobe for his struggles.
It is sickening.

DAN_T_MAN,
East Coast bias. That's what it's about.
Tim-4-Show,
As a Lakers fan away from my beloved Los Angeles, let me just say that why I shout my lungs out at my local bar when the Lakers play, I wouldn't do that if they were playing the Cavs. Why? Not because I love the Cavs, quite the opposite, I hate them. But because I'm in Cleveland.
I respect the fact that the public here supports the Cavs, as misguided as they are. I wouldn't go into a Celtics bar and begin razzing Celtics fans because they're having a good time rooting for their team. If I went in and starting saying their team sucks and such, I'd be looking for trouble pure and simple. And I'd get what I deserved.
In my mind, the BEST fan is the kind of fan who can go to a Celtics bar or a Lakers/Nuggets game in the playoffs, and quietly roots for the Lakers in their heart and takes the abuse he/she received with equanimity and grace. It's their house. Fans with class respect that.
In addition, if a Celtics (or Suns or Kings or Jazz) fan comes into OUR HOUSE and tries to shout out to the world that it is in fact THEIR HOUSE, well, that guy deserves what he gets. That simple.
Personally, I'm not going to sit at a Lakers game next to someone who's obnoxiously rooting for the other team and not cuzz him/her out. What? Do you think I'm just going to put up with that crap? HELL NO!
GO LAKERS!

I'm hearing rumors that the Celtics are having plane problems, and that they left LA for Boston today at 2PM, which would put them in Boston at 11 PM.
Again, unsubstantiated rumors, but if true, my question is: How is Kareem Abdul Jabbar getting into all these cockpits (San Antonio, Boston, Airplane!)?
Posted by: Amazing_Happens | June 16, 2008 at 02:36 PM

Posted by: Bsulli | June 16, 2008 at 02:57 PM
Oh come on. LA is yet to play a full 60 mins game with all 5 players on the court. Personally, were I a Laker fan, which I am not, I would demand my team puts out. As for Boston, they were discounted in losing the series in 4-5 games, may be 6 by some analysts. Were I a Celtics, fan which I am not I would be proud the way my "underrated" team took it to the Lakers and made it in their face twice, and almost three times. Lakers at this point do not look like a team that wants this championship. They are not leaving it all on the court. And if they don't plan on doing so in the finals? When exactly do they plan to put out?
Posted by: Ski | June 16, 2008 at 03:00 PM
OK Folks,
I have to post my opinion.
First of all, you pick your battle. If you are alone and taunting (not that I am assuming that guy in the Celtic jersey was) the opposing team fans on their home court, you are asking for it. Not because it is justified, but you should be aware of the Fan Climate nowadays.
There are intelligent fans, and then there are the Animals that worship Beer and their Team. These are the fans you should watch out for.
Any opposing fan should not be harmed if they were just there to support their team. Not a single fan of the opposition!
However, like I have mentioned; just observe how rowdy fans can be. You have to be aware and know what you are getting into. Be respectful and expect to be taunted. I hate to say that, but thats how it is nowadays.

We're gonna win this thing.
Before the finals, all the experts picked LA. That made me kind of uneasy, because these "experts" are rarely right it seems. Maybe they work too many hours.
Now no one gives us a chance and cites all the conditions of our latest win against us??? Pierce dropping 38 and injuries, KG choking late, etc etc. They use these facts as why the lakers won't win?? I don't get it. These same examples could be used to say the Celts don't have what it takes.
The experts have the mariners winning the AL west, the Patriots as Superbowl champs, and the spurs/mavs/suns/hornets et al as WC champs. Well I'll take underdog status any day of the week and side and ride with our guys.

Hate to see violence like that just because of a silly ol' game. Nevertheless, did anybody notice how TIRED that Celtics fan was getting toward the end of the fracas? He also looked a bit BANGED UP and maybe even INJURED. Or am I projecting onto Game 6 a bit? Maybe, but I'm hoping that the Celtics are reaping what they sow, which means that a team that plays as physical as they do (especially the three P's: Posey, Perkins and PJ) all season---and post-season---long is going to wind up a bit banged up and weary, even if they're the ones who have meted out most of the punishment over the course of the year. Are they too tired to finish a young Lakers team off? And was putting Mihm in (to rest a Laker or two) actually the smartest thing Phil Jackson did on Sunday night? I say they play Kobe 48 in Game 6 and do a lot of trapping in the half-court. Does Phil still have a trick or two up his sleeve? I sure as hell hope so...

TWO WINS FROM TOTAL REDEMPTION…
I have no doubt that Jack Nicholson is on his way to Boston to watch the Lakers pull off the greatest comeback in NBA Finals history. And I have no doubt that Jack will again give the Boston fans the choke sign after Thursday night’s Lakers triumph. In fact, I am sure he is looking forward to it with great relish and anticipation.
I have to admit that I have come to hate this Celtics team to a player as much as I love this Lakers team to a player. The fact that the Celtics actually thought they were going to close out the Lakers last night really tells you how overconfident these Celtics are. KG said he could taste the champagne, Pierce planned to celebrate winning the title in LA, Perkins said he would be able to hoist the trophy no matter how bad his shoulder was, and Celtics broadcaster Cedric Maxwell said he could hear the fat lady sing.
Instead, the Lakers withstood every Boston challenge and won the game with clutch plays by Kobe Bryant and his teammates, whereas the Celtics Big3 were anything but. Paul Pierce had his pocket picked twice in the clutch by Kobe Bryant. Kevin Garnett choked 3 straight free throws to kill a Celtics rally. And Ray Allen continued to struggle with his game and now may have serious family health issues to be concerned about. Injuries, personal problems, age, and travel all suddenly seem more important.
Now that they’ve shipped the Champagne, cancelled the party reservations, and packed their bags to return to Boston with their tails between their legs, the Celtics will see the kernel of fear that they should have closed out the Lakers slowly start to grow and fester. On Thursday morning, it was just a kernel. By Tuesday night’s game, it will have grown into a fist sized knot metastasizing in the stomach of every Celtic player. By Thursday night’s game, it will be so heavy that the Celtic players will be physically ill.
The Celtics know that Kobe is past due to have another world type of game and they now worry that if Pierce has an off game, Garnett and Allen may not be able to hold the fort. They rightly wonder if Posey, Brown, and House can possibly be the keys to the series. The quick two-day turnaround for Game 6 may leave the older Celtics vulnerable. Look for the Lakers to focus on getting Kobe off to a breakout game and to beat the older and slower Celtics to every lose ball. This series is taking its toll on the older Celtics.
Kobe Bryant is still the wild card in this series. While Boston has played good team and individual defense on Kobe, it’s like Kobe is still biding his time and waiting for the key moment to strike. His two steals off Pierce in the 4th quarter were vintage MVP but I think we still have not seen Kobe’s best two games of the Finals, the games that are going to win him the Finals MVP. That’s why the next 2 games are going to be the best.

TIGER / MIKE call KOBE the BEST
Evidently Tiger got Mike's opinion about the great "who's best" debate. Tiger thinks Kobe and Mike agrees, probably not in the "all time" category.
That may not be interesting to some, but to me, they are the only 2 that have been to "that" place. Personally, I don't think Jordan measures up to Tiger but, the point is, tomorrow night will be just the kind of stage where such things are proven.
Tiger got his, it's Kobe time.

I don't blame the Lakers, that was ridiculous. A bunch of gang bangers were trying to beat up on a guy for wearing a Celtics shirt. Then the poor ushers who are just trying to make a few bucks, not work as security bouncers were being forced to try and separate these idiot gang bangers from their mortal "enemies" who were wearing green jerseys... absolutely ridiculous. I say throw these idiots in jail for 3 months and then they can prove how tough they are over and over and over again.
I mean seriously... people can't even go to a place and watch a game on tv without getting into a fight? It's gotten bad enough at Dodger games. You go up in the cheap seats and there's always a group of drunken guys hurling obscenities and ready to pick a fight with any takers.
Must be the old Raider's crowd. I went to a few of those games back in the day... wow... you picked the wrong section back then and you would see maybe 10 minutes of the game, the rest of the action was in the crowd...

Anyway, I've been trolling this blog since the series started and have been consistant in picking the Celtics in 5. Time to man up... I was wrong. Gasol and Odom both had great games. Both came up big in the paint. Congratulations Laker fans...we have a series.

A few seats next to me last night were two guys in Celtics jackets. They clapped when the Celtics scored and booed when the Lakers did well. They were polite when getting in and out of their seats. They were friendly. People left them alone and even checked to make sure they were okay when one of them slipped on some spilt beer. They were just two dudes cheering for their team and enjoying a game. They were cool.
A few seats below me were a couple of other Celtics fans. All game long they talked trash. Whenever Paul Pierce scored, they would stand up, flex their muscles for all to see and taunt the Lakers fans around them. People heckled them good, especially when they walked out in the waning minutes of the game. Had one of them slipped on some spilt beer on his way out, I think we would have all applauded.
There is no place for violence at a game, but some people just invite it by their behavior.

I spent the 80's in New Hampshire, in bars as a Laker fan watching the Finals when it was me and 300 Celtic fans. It got heated at times and there were a few unpleasant moments on both sides, but everyone respected my right to be there and root for whomever I chose.
I live in San Francisco and go to the Lakers v. Warriors at least once a year in Oakland. It is just a game and a fun night out - I should be able to participate without any fear.
The Lakers organization has always had more class than the Celtics. The Lakers never stooped to planned cheap shots like Celtic players Danny Ainge, Kevin Mchale and Greg Kite. LA never turned off the AC in the visitor locker room or had fans calling the visiting team at their hotel at 4am. The Lakers never tanked a season for a draft pick. The Celtics have done it twice.
Lets maintain the upper hand in the class department while we strive to obtain the upper hand in the title department.
I appreciate the passion and enthusiasm - about time really - but physical violence takes it too far.

In re: to not allowing people wearing celtic jerseys inside...... Many bars in the UK have signs outside saying 'home supporters only'. It's not only for the safety of away supporters, but to a certain extent home as well. It also creates for a better viewing experience for the home crowd as well. I mean, they are the home crowd and should be allowed to have best viewing experience they can.
