In the spirit of Thursday's upcoming draft, SI's Chris Mannix speculates how each team would select from a pool of players currently in the NBA. Same order (Chicago first, Miami second, Minny third, etc.). Very different results. And check out which team just happens to have the most players selected. Not to reveal any head-spinning spoilers, but one of them is Kobe Bryant.
How the hell does Eddy Curry not make the cut?

Do You See What I See,
>>>Quinton Ross??? are you being facetious? or have you seen something that stats don't show?
to quote John Hollinger on espn:
" Ross' outstanding agility makes him one of the league's best defensive stoppers. He's not quite in the elite category because of physical limitations -- he's 6-6 so some bigger players can shoot over him, and at 193 pounds he's not as good in post defense as he is on the perimeter. However, he's great at staying in front of people and manages to be a pest at the same time -- he ranked in the top 20 at his position in both blocks and steals per minute."
Bruce Bowen and Shane Battier also look pretty below average if you just look at their
stats. It's what they bring at the defensive end that counts.

What's Larry Bird talking trash on this blog for?
How about some stats:
Championships: 5-3
Last Finals played: 1987 LOSE TO LAKERS
Last Finals coashed: 2000 LOSE TO LAKERS
Brilliant GM Moves:
TRADE ARTEST FOR PEJA AND THEN LET HIM GO FOR NOTHING
TRADE ALL STAR CENTER (JERMAINE) FOR T.J. FORD!!!
Don't talk trash here until YOU win something!!

Jon - I like Ross too - he's an undervalued player for the money. The only problem, from my point of view, is that we're pretty loaded at the position. Ross is a tall SG who can play the SF as well... and like you said, he's a defensive specialist. However, look at where we are currently. Once L.O. moves to the 3, we'll have him, Rad, Trevor and Luke at that position, as well as Kobe who plays a fair share at that slot. At the 2, we have Kobe and Shasha. What we really need, in my opinion, is a solid PF banger to back up Pau. It's not an easy position to fill - there's not a lot available through free agency and we don't have much to spend under cap rules and we'll probably only have a couple open slots. Still, it's a glaring hole. We really need another physical presence.

Heat To Trade Marion and Pick For Brand?
Posted by: Charles | June 26, 2008 at 09:48 AM
Ex:
Some nice ideas, but just not practical. Maxwell Smart already played in the league (Happy Hairston) and he wasn't your perrennial all-star. Jim West, I'll give you, because he'd know how to cheat and get away with it. And while Herman Munster looks good on paper, good attitude notwithstanding, with league rules in place to protect players, you never know when he'll hurt your team by drawing a flagrant 2 while clotheslining your player going in for an uncontested layup. Today, my friend, that could change a series.
I thought about Lurch. Nobody bodies up like the big man, but he's so doggone slow, he gets destroyed on the pick and roll, and he's death to your transition defense. How about this lineup:
1- Dr. Christoper Turk (Scrubs) -- Great attitude, sort of a small Magic, but with better perimeter D.
2- Heimi (Get Smart. Move over, Machine!)
3- Sawyer (Lost. He plays dirty, but doesn't get caught. Plus, he gets ladies into the arena.)
4- Col. Steve Austin (The Six Million Dollar Man.)
5- Roseanne Connor (Roseanne. Hey, somebody's gotta plug the middle.)
Bench - Tony Soprano. (The Sopranos. Never has to play, and he's still good for 60 wins.)
Coach - Special Agent Dale Cooper (Twin Peaks. Has more crazy methods than the Zen Master.)
GM- Charlie Eppes (Numbers.)
Owner- J.R. Ewing (Dallas)

Do the Lakers go after Posey?
What if the Lakers could sign Posey?
There would not be enough money in the tank for Sasha.
If you had to chose between the two, who would you rather have then?
Posey, an experienced Championship Vet (31), great Defender, and clutch shooter.
Or....
Sasha, (23?)a very good shooter, and promising defender.
Which one would make the Lakers tougher mentally?

Charles,
I don't think the Clips will make that move. Brand goes well with Thorton. They will have Marion, Beasley, and Thorton (assuming Rose goes #1). All good forwards, but all undersized 4s. They really should give up on Shaun as a starter and try to get a PG, but we'll see. I was thinking that Brand might move to MIA but they wouldn't have a big presence and Haslem gets displaced to the bench.
I heard Seattle (OKL) was looking at a PG for Durant if they couldn't get Beasley, so Clips might look at Ridnour since it looks like Sea doesn't want him.
I think MIA is looking to at Memphis more to secure a PG and get Miller. To me, that and keeping Marion is the smarter move.

>>>Do you really believe Luke Walton can shoot 3's? Yeah right like every time he came
>>>in his defender played off him and ignored his shooting ability as he could not hit the
>>>ocean with a rock.
Luke hit 42% of his 3-pointers in the playoffs. That's second only to DFish on the team for
the playoffs. And Luke was playing injured much of the season because Rad and Ariza
were both too injured to play. If Luke could hit 42% of his 3-pointers for the whole season
next year, I'd take that in a minute.
Posted by: Long Time Laker Fan | June 26, 2008 at 12:04 PM
Absolute Truth,
Is Quinton Ross as good as Trevor Ariza? I'd say no. He's not as athletic.
However, Trevor Ariza is getting paid $3.1 million a year and Quinton Ross was paid $750,000 last year.
To borrow from long time laker fan,
to quote John Hollinger on espn:
" Ross' outstanding agility makes him one of the league's best defensive stoppers. He's not quite in the elite category because of physical limitations -- he's 6-6 so some bigger players can shoot over him, and at 193 pounds he's not as good in post defense as he is on the perimeter. However, he's great at staying in front of people and manages to be a pest at the same time -- he ranked in the top 20 at his position in both blocks and steals per minute."
What does this team need to improve on to win the Championship next year? Defense.
Quinton Ross is a defensive minded player who can play multiple positions. He's a hard worker (which other Lakers--Kobe--will appreciate) and a selfless player. AND we can probably get him for around or under $2 million a year, which is a big deal considering luxury tax issues.
He's a perfect fit.
For all those people clamoring for another player in the $8-14 million dollar range, you're delusional.
We need one, maybe two hard working, energetic, defensive minded players with low salaries and that's it.
If we don't get Quinton Ross, then we should bring back Mighty Mo Evans, who is also pretty gifted defensively (and is best friends with Andrew Bynum).
GO LAKERS!

mrbarneydangles,
>>>...if we somehow lose Sasha.
Bad idea. Sasha had the highest shooting percentage from 3 of any Laker last season. The
triangle NEEDS good outside shooters to make it work, and Sasha was the best the Lakers
had this year.
And though I wouldn't call him a lock-down defender, Sasha is a pretty good team defender
and he frequently got under opposing players' skins and got them to cause a technical foul
(e.g. the Carmelo choking incident) or got them to shove him out of the way and get called
for a foul.
Getting beat on an isolation play on Ray Allen with no help doesn't make him a bad
defender. Even Kobe gets beat on iso plays sometimes.

What is this rumor about Miami giving LA their #2 pick,Blount,Haslem for Odom and #58 pick? This makes no sense..and Miami would be crazy to do this trade..though if it did come true I would not mind having Haslem on the team....and Beasly..or OJ mayo.

Jon K., I credited you the other day on your talent evaluation of Q. Ross. You're on target when it comes to his defensive prowess and atheltic ability to play tight D. His outstanding agility and footwork (success factors to good D) can neutralize pesky guards (Nash, Paul, etc.) and small forwards. Except for you, I'm not certain why more on this blog are recognizing the utility of this unknown commoditiy/hidden treasure.
Posted by: Rollo Tomassi | June 26, 2008 at 12:26 PM
dave m,
The beauty of next year's team is that we are going to have SO many players that can play multiple positions. It provides so much flexibility in terms of rotations and creating problematic matchup issues for the opposition.
Lamar's going to move to the three next year, but that doesn't mean that we won't see Lamar, Rad Vlad, and Luke occasionally playing power forward. We will.
GO LAKERS!
Posted by: Jon K. | June 26, 2008 at 12:32 PM
Fairweather Fatty,
I'll take Sasha nine times out of 10. Younger, faster, will be a better shooter and doesn't run the risk of getting called for a flagrant after the whistle blows- EVERY SINGLE FLIPPIN' TIME.

Dave M,
Nice rumor. Are you running TMZ now? Ask Tommy Lee how Pam's @$$ taste yeah? We'll see sir. I will say, I questioned that Marion and #2 pick from Hoops World. Thorton and Horford were pretty impressive rookies to me. Anytime you can have Mobley, Thorton, Brand and Hulk Hogan in your starting line up is impressive. (Damn that Korolev guy.) But the Smush Parker pick up last season? Where there is dumb, there is dumber.
Fatty,
We will be over the cap anyways. Blog correct me if I am wrong but we own Sasha's Bird rights. We have the mid level and veterans minimum this year, so we may use those for the free agency; and then sign Sasha to the agreed amount.
Posted by: Charles | June 26, 2008 at 12:46 PM
Drew......I just said the same thing when i saw that trade.....YI FOR JEFFERSON......WOW
Posted by: Thirty2 | June 26, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Jon K,
My feeling is that Ross would get manhandled by Paul Pierce. While Lamar is just too slow for Pierce. We've seen Radmanovic and Luke try...
The key to beating the Celtics is controlling Paul Pierce. Pierce's penetration and post play is what killed us. We need someone who can guard both of those areas of Pierce's game, while the other guys stay at home on the shooters.
I like Ross as a player though and he would be a good addition to the squad.

James Jones anyone??
Posted by: nik kannan | June 26, 2008 at 01:05 PM
Jon - re: my posts, here's where I'm at. I love Turief. Bring him back by all means! But, he's not a heavy minutes guy, he has some hip issues, etc.. He's got great energy and he's willing to put his body out there, but I don't see him as a classic banger/enforcer and he doesn't exactly clean the glass at a high rate.
I totally agree with you that the multi-position factor is awesome - I love that we have so many swing players. But still, I feel that the one spot that we need more depth at, is the 4. We have a lot of players with length but not as much bulk and toughness as I'd like.
As far as Kwame goes... my vote is no. He had all the chances in the world. He didn't pan out, plain and simple.
Here's some food for thought, draft picks we have a shot at - we already talked about D.J. White (6'9" banger for the Hoosiers).... add to my PF list, Richard Hendrix 6'8", 250 from the Crimson Tide, described by some as a Paul Milsap-type. Also, Joey Dorsey, 6'9", 260 - tough guy post player, limited skill-set... finally, from the Congo, Serge Ibaka, 6'10" - check him out on youtube.

I really don't understand this blog's fixation with Kwame Brown!! Kwame Brown?? Other than bring us Pau, what good has come from him? He doesn't handle pressure, can't catch, doesn't have any offensive moves down low, and frequently misses dunks. He may have been an OK defender (by playground standards) but I don't remember any spectacular defensive games he played. Is it because he played 2 years in the Triangle? Just because a cylinder piece fits in a triangle hole doesn't mean that's the right answer. NO on Prop. 54!! Just say NO to Kwame Brown!!!

THE LATEST FROM ERIC PINCUS…
http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9222
“Miami HEAT: O.J. Mayo. Pat Riley goes with the player he deems the better fit. Trading down was too risky, so Mayo's the pick. Shawn Marion gets shopped around, specifically to the Los Angeles Lakers for Lamar Odom and Luke Walton. LA passes.”
“The Los Angeles Lakers will look to trade Luke Walton, possibly with Chris Mihm to balance salaries. They re-sign Sasha Vujacic to a $22 million contract over five years. They also keep Ronny Turiaf for three years at $9.5 million. Guess who else returns at a discount? That's right . . . Kwame Brown. Lamar Odom is on the team opening night, starting at small forward.” – Eric Pincus for HoopsWorld.

Artest, 28, visited the Lakers' locker room during the NBA Finals and has spoken glowingly of Kobe Bryant in the past, but he told the Mason and Ireland Show on KSPN-AM (710) that it "looks like I'm going to be a King next year" before saying he would "never" take less money to play for a championship contender.
"Not in a million years," he said. "Actually, not in 10 million years."
Haha. Do you guys still want this guy in a Lakers uniform? Wow, I'm glad he has put that rumor to rest and he is staying in cow town. I knew this guys was trouble. We don't need players apathetic towards a championship.
Posted by: Lakafo0 | June 26, 2008 at 07:48 AM
No one takes less to win a championship unless they're in their 16th or later NBA season. So, by your criteria the only players worth getting for the Lakers would have been Gary Payton, Karl Malone, James Posey, PJ Brown, Sam Cassell a handful of others.
You have a choice. You take a player that already made his money and just wants to swoop in to get that one championship. Or, you can open your mind to the 98% of players in the NBA that aren't that handful of guys.
