Utah on Sunday
The game isn't technically over yet, but with the Jazz up by 22 with 11 minutes left in the fourth against a Rockets team playing on the road without Rafer Alston (left the game with an ankle injury), I feel comfortable saying that the Jazz will advance to the second round, starting Sunday at Staples.
Obviously, we'll have more thoughts on this tomorrow, but I think this should be a great series. The Jazz is a rock solid, disciplined team with great guard play, a strong frontcourt, and the ability to knock down shots in the halfcourt and run out on the break. When Utah defends, which they've been doing with much more frequency in the second half of the year, they're very tough.
I've got the Lakers winning this one, but anything less than six games to decide it would be a surprise to me. I'm leaning towards seven.

You know THE MVP is watchin' D Williams thinkin', enjoy tonight 'cause your run ends next series.
The man loves a challenge.
Posted by: Vman | May 02, 2008 at 09:57 PM
I don't see it going to six. The Lakers won't lose at Staples and they'll take at leas one of the three games at Salt Lake. If they only take one, that means the chances would be two out of three that they come back to Staples to close out in game 5. And if they go up 3-0, as they did with Denver, Utah will crumble in game 4.
I'll be generous and say LA in five, but expect another sweep. Utah's tough, but I think our guys will get in their heads in the first two games and they won't recover.
Posted by: Tsphere | May 02, 2008 at 10:00 PM
Utah's good. We'll win, but this will be a series.
GO LAKERS!
Posted by: Jon K. | May 02, 2008 at 10:09 PM
Don't be surprised if the Lakers sweep Utah. Denver has better individual players Melo, AI, Camby, JR Smith, Kenyon Martin. Granted Nuggets don't share the ball -- but Utah has no shot blockers like camby. LO will be able to get to the basket. Jazz are terrible on the road. Lakers will take the challenge to win in Utah -- and win.
Lakers 4-0.

Hmrhead,
It's only now I can reply to your post in the other treads about the Jazz, can anyone win 2 games in Utah? It is possible and GHF Lakertom thinks it will be a sweep. lol!Even during the time of Magic, Lakers give away one to Utah in their homecourt. I will return the question, since Pau joined the Lakers, did Utah ever win a game against the Lakers especially at Staples? Here is the biggest problem of Utah Jazz during the season while they are 37-4 at home, they are only 17-24 on the road. It shows they lacked experience, confidence as a team when they're away from their home turf. BTW, one of their four losses at home was with the Lakers. Weakness of the Lakers was shown in Game 4, they could not hold the big lead in the closing minutes of 3rd Q. they get rattled by the noisy fans and the razzle dazzle plays. Utah Jazz are not Nuggets, they are better team with a defensive-minded Coach. This will be a good series but of course I pick the Lakers 4-2. I just heard the cheers of all time...Beat LA, beat LA....that means we are doing great, on time for destiny. Nobody cheered beat LA during the time of Kwame-Smush, they were delirious in their laughter hahahahaha! while we say Whoa! Goodnite

I've got LA in 5, but wouldn't be surprised to see it go 6 or 7. Utah is legit.

I may be wrong, but I just don't see the Jazz as being that much of a threat. Also, we beat them 3-1 this season.

i called denver in a sweep
and only b/c utah doesn't bastardize the game and play "the right way" ...i'm giving this one five games
utah's good but can be flawed.
okur, does he only play 15 feet away from the hoop?
AK, overrated defender on kobe
utah bench, nothing to harp on
and there's something inherently wrong about an NBA team that has to run its second-half offense in front of its bench... sloan always elects to have his team play the final 24 minutes in front of the utah bench = sign of weakness
we are stronger. we are more experienced. we are more balanced. and we have KB24, supreme ruler of the free universe and he hates utah

I watched this game to get acquainted with our opponent.
Utah has a lot of good post ball movement and one-on-one post players. They're not going to abuse us like they did Houston. I say it goes 5-6 and we win. They're good, but we're a lot better.

I am truly excited for Kobe and the entire Laker organization! Kobe's the best choice for MVP. I wonder how much he spent on dinner tonight...
When do you all suppose Mr. Stern will hand out the award? Sunday? Tuesday? Will it be given to Kobe before a game, or is there some sort of special ceremony that will take place outside of playing time?
Thanks!

IF the Lakers hold serve in the first two games, Lakers in five...
...Otherwise they have to take two in Salt Lake to not go seven...
Posted by: SG | May 02, 2008 at 10:59 PM
I think six games is about what the lakers will need to take this one. Look for the Jazz to sneak one out of the Staples Center simply due to the fact that the lakers haven't yet entered playoff mode (e.g. the nuggets didn't play any defense). I think the fact that the Jazz are now accustomed to banging in the paint on both ends of the floor could be favorable for them at the beginning of this series. Truth be told, Kobe is amazing, but the laker's team defense is nowhere near that of the rockets. I see the jazz being more able to get into a rhythm against the lakers than they did against Houston. This will be a good one.

I want to say something against the post JWW in the previous thread. J. W. Weathermen, I respected u in the past but I think you made a wrong decision on this one. You showed your intolerance to fellow Laker fans who wanted to celebrate in their own unique way. You accused Mamba24 as being selfish, actually it is you who is selfish. For one fleeting moment, why can't u allow the youth here to celebrate, you only know your own way. We celebrate today for Kobe, and also for going second round finally on Sunday, but at the same time there is something lacking, our Mamb24 will stay away for a while, it is a Pyrrhic victory in the blog because of people who are real "KJs". Very sad.....
Andy and Laker Truth made their amends and explained their sides, in your case you were proud in your post in chastising Mamba24. Man, that's like Brutus saying: Hail to Caesar, I slew him because I am a honorable man!

Utah will give the Laker's a bettter series than you think. Fisher because of his time with the Jazz will have a good series. It is to bad many question whether he used his childs ilness as an excuse to leave the Jazz. They were ist class in how they treated him. Seven games it will be. The Jazz are not as much a light weight as you think.

I like the Lakers in five. Utah is good, much better than Denver, but the Lakers are just a little better. Better on the road, better against good teams, and that will show up a little more each game. Plus, the Lakers have the best player in a series where the teams are fairly evenly matched, and this player is on a mission. Having Fisher may provide a little extra insight on Utah's offense, too.
Posted by: Jman449 | May 03, 2008 at 12:01 AM
What's really crazy is that the Jazz haven't played the Lakers with Pau Gasol in the lineup as Pau was injured when we broke the Jazz home winning streak late in the season. I really don't think the Jazz are prepared with a Lakers team featuring Kobe and Pau Gasol. Kobe has always had big games against the Jazz even with AK-47 guarding him. Kobe is an assassin compared to T-Mac and has that killer instinct. Like the Stockton-Malone Jazz had the misfortune of existing in the MJ led Bulls era, the Williams-Boozer duo will suffer the same fate by playing in the Kobe led Lakers era which begins now. Go Lakers!!!
I was thinking about how lucky the Cavs would be if the Atlanta Hawks somehow pull off the greatest upset ever if they somehow manage to win game 7 in Boston. The Cavs could once again reach the ECF if they play the Hawks in the next round. I believe that the Hawks are due to win one on the road. We shall see.
Posted by: Nemaia Faletogo | May 03, 2008 at 12:03 AM
Lakers, at worst, in 5. The Jazz ain't seen nuthin' w/Gasol in the lineup. The way the Lakers are passing, I actually don't see ANY team beating them this year. Defense? Come on now, they can play defense more than most give them credit for. The Lakers are for real & you bet the Jazz are a little concerned that they're going to have to go through them, which they won't. Do not doubt the tenacity of 24, Gasol & LO, let alone the defensive-minded Fisher & the suddenly massive Walton (the most efficient shooter of the first round for any series). Watch out if Sasha & Rad get hot, the Jazz are going to be playing the blues!
Posted by: Son Vo | May 03, 2008 at 12:03 AM
why did lakers play well against utah during the season, especially that last game played in utah.
energy from the booing of fisher during the first trip to utah
bynum and ariza balanced game, kobe can sit the whole fourth quarter.
we can win it without bynum, but we need bynum to blow the game out of the water.
i read the news but once the pain goes away he's got to be ready to step onto the practice court and get practice then game speed back.

• The Jazz won't have the advantage in manpower against the Lakers in the next round, but they will have an edge in toughness. Expect plenty of the physical play Utah dished out in the first round to be utilized on the Lakers, especially on Pau Gasol, never one known for his love of a hard-nosed approach in the paint. But for the Jazz to overcome the Kobe onslaught, their frontcourt is going to have to bring more consistency to each game. Against the Rockets, Boozer, Kirilenko and Okur seemed like the only players on the court one quarter and invisible the next. The Lakers' experienced backcourt won't give Williams the freedom to save the Jazz as much as he was allowed against Houston. Still, the Jazz have a wealth of experience and a style that could the Lakers into the type of bruising affair for which they are not built.
=====================================
=======
I'm so tired of hearing how soft we are. I think that Pau will take on some of Kobe's aura of toughness. One of the Lakers said that Pau has a mean streak. I won't be surprised if it comes out.
I've said it many, many times. Confidence will win this series. If the Lakers play with supreme confidence they will win this series easily. If there's any doubt, hesitation, or relaxation it will be exploited, and the Lakers will have to scratch and claw their way back.
That being said, I can see the Lakers coming back to LA up 3-1 in the series.
The Lakers need to impose their will on the Jazz so that they will realize in horror that RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

Posted by: MiloRambaldi | May 03, 2008 at 12:59 AM
Guys,
We should stop making references to the Borg. The Borg are not only an antogonist group but they eventually are defeated after coming so close to conquest. If we are to make any references to Star Trek, we should liken ourselves to the Next Generation crew for we have come against all odds and still remain steadfast.
If anything, I liken this journey to Star Wars. If we are to win the title, it would be like The Return of the Jedi.
Posted by: never | May 03, 2008 at 01:30 AM
In other thoughts,
I'm kind of superstitious about Kobe winning the MVP. That title has been a curse in my opinion to the MVP's team. The last time an MVP has won the title was Duncan back in 2003. Can Kobe break this trend?
T-Mac said that the Rockets "hate" the Jazz fans. "We [Houston Rockets] hate everything about them [Jazz fans]" mentioned the All-Star.
Don't worry T-Mac, Kobe has your back. He's probably thinking, "I shall avenge you my brother."

Here's why we will sweep Utah:
I disagree with some people who seem to think that we're just a little bit better than Utah - truth is, we're a LOT better than Utah. True, I think we will give up more points - probably between 100 and 105. Trouble for Utah is, we're going to score between 110 and 120, and there's not a thing they will be able to do about it.
Utah's usual defensive matchup scheme that normally gives them an advantage actually plays into our hands - namely, having Mehmet Okur bring the opposing big out of the paint due to his outside shot. Trouble is, Pau prefers to play outside the paint, and is a superior passer with superior shooters and slashers to pass to.
I don't think they can put AK47 on Kobe without getting abused. Who does Brewer guard, then? Vlad? Brewer gets abused in the post, then. Bottom line, whoever is playing that off guard position is going to have their hands full defensively. AK47 is a good defender, but a much better help defender - and when he cheats off Lamar to come over for the block, we wing it around and either take the open 3 or come in to Lamar for the flush. Their worst two positions defensively are our best two positions offensively. To my eyes, that adds up to us winning big. Also consider the fact that we played them 2-1 this year without Gasol... I can't believe there are peeps who think this will go 6.
Get out the brooms, my purple and gold brothers and sisters...
And, on a related note, whether the Celtics win or lose this game 7, the damage has been done. Everyone knows now that they're not the juggernaut they were portraying themselves as during the regular season. They are a paper tiger, the 2007 Mavericks of this year. They have no heart, only meaningless posturing and stalking about the court, trying to look intense. There is a reason Pierce, Garnett and Allen have never won anything - they all CRUMBLE in crunch time. They have no heart. Sam Cassell has more balls by himself than the three of them put together, but Sam I Am is too old and gimpy to carry the whole team there this year. Mark my words, this round one series was like the iceberg to the Titanic for their season. The seed has been planted - all the other teams know they can be beaten. Even if they cruise on to the second round they are still leaking below the waterline. They are dead men walking, as far as I'm concerned.
GO LAKERS!
Posted by: SBPimp | May 03, 2008 at 04:45 AM
Congrats to our MVP. The Laker Nation has been vindicated.
I see the Jazz series as the real NBA Championship game. Lakers and Utah are the best teams, as the Celtics are in a meltdown.
I'm glad we're back to playing. We win in 5

Okur is a decent defender and shot blocker (hes no Camby of course)...and AK47 is long lanky..and doesn't impress me one bit

Chants of "Beat LA! Beat LA!"
Who do these people think they are? Do they really know who they are asking for? Are they THAT foolish?
Waking the sleeping Giant, not a smart thing.
They are like Lex Luther with a plan, sounds good on paper, but always fails.
They will not surprise us, nor deny us our destiny.
Our Watchtower guards have lit the warning fires.
We will be ready.
We will defend our honor, our tradition, our legacy.
We will defend against the 'wanta be hordes' from Mordor, Utah.
We didn't start this conflict, with their classless booing of our Fisher. But we Damn well will finish it!
The lamps have been lit, the bugle has sounded.
Are you ready for the battle?
Then front and center, because its time for......

BK is overly conservative in his predictions. He doesn't want to be a Skip Bayless. I think a seven game series is highly unlikely.
A six game Lakers victory is far more likely.

Lakers in 4. The Jazz will see M.V.P. Kobe "Black Mamba" Bryant take it to an even higher level and his team following suit. With Boston facing a game 7 situation in the first round against the 8th seeded Hawks..??? Maybe Stern will have to go with his second best choice out of the east LBJ and the Cavs .
Hey you know its love when you want to rush Saturday by, for game day Sunday.

The Jazz will steal game 1. They played a tough battle with arguably the best defense in the NBA. The Jazz are ready to bang. Why does everyone think sweeping Denver was something to talk about. Denver is nothing more than 5 thugs
playing street ball. They jack up 28 footers anytime they feel like it. You wont see Utah doing that. I feel that the Jazz will take this series in 6. I hope I'm wrong!
