Let the games begin!
PROGRAMMING NOTE: Join us for Purple, Gold, and Blue at 11 am. We'll be talking Game 1 of the WCF with our guest, Michael Erler of the Spurs blog Pounding the Rock. Then it's some Blue with Jon Weisman of Dodger Thoughts. Click on the show widget at the side of the page, or go straight to our show window by clicking here.
After a weekend of kicking it and around 48-ish hours to debate their San Antonio Spurs opponents, tonight's Game 1 (6:00 pm PST, TNT) will finally grace roundball enthusiasts with its presence. Their WCF foes are a familiar bunch, a crew that's essentially turned itself into the NBA's version of old (but not too old) faithful. The proverbial "mix" typically has them in it, with a championship never out of the question (and lest we forget, these cats are in fact defending a title). In fact, this decade will likely be regarded as having belonged to one of these squads. In many ways, it's only fitting (if not necessarily ideal) that the purple and gold's championship dreams will require a besting of a team that can arguably be labeled the best.
So what's the upstart Lakers' game plan in order to help reclaim the last 10 years? For starters, match wit with extreme wit, as these Spurs rarely, if ever, take a misstep while on the court. Better be ready for some scrappy, contact-heavy play, because these Spurs ain't above trying to get under your skin. Try to take them out of their measured and methodical zone. And, of course, much will come down to who's shadowing which dude. From the big to the little, both squads offer more than their share of intriguing and generally tight matchups. Pau Gasol will find himself going mano y' mano with Tim Duncan on more than one occasion, but while it's easy to focus on the cache players, don't sleep on the Lakers' supporting cast when looking for a potential difference maker.
And remember, kids. It's not the typical 7:30 pm PST tip off we associate with Laker games. Set your watches, even if they're not as cool as the ones Kobe doled out. Probably not as sweet as the timepiece on Kwame Brown's wrist, even if it's different than his ex-mates'.
Yet one more reason Mike D'Antoni should have sought employment with the Bulls instead of the Knicks.
If you missed LO's feature in the NY Times, here you go. Also, there's a good interview with him on his website (pretty sure it was filmed yesterday).

The Force & Laker Nation are in balance for a swift and devastating strike
Good Morning Charles

Good Morning Laker Nation
****
It was Jesterguru who said it, The Circle has once again closed
When last we, were a dynasty, The Spurs were our major foes
This team can really be special, that’s team of the decade you see
Have no fear of the Spurs you hear, leave it to 9Rings & Kobe
Bruce Bowen the “Kobe stopper”, Your @ss is about to get beat
Pops jealousy, of 9Rings you see, is why the Spurs face defeat
No one can match up with Timmy, that’s right no Lakers that old
Timmy my friend, you cannot win, put down your hand and fold
Duncan you are truly classy, Of that we would all say yes.
Retire please, with your dignity, Old man you can’t take the stress
Robert “ Big Shot Rob” Horry , Always a Laker you’ll be
But one cheap shot and I kid you not, Your @ss will be history
They ask who can stop Parker, they say he has great speed
Speed Kills, can’t match our skills, Tony Go to Eva & plant seeds
It’s time now San Antonio, Time for pretend champions to step down
The young lions here, are hungry I fear, hungry for a NBA crown.
The Spurs were a classy champion, On that we can all agree,
But Class my ass, the Lakers has, he team of destiny
We know to win the title, The champ you must knock out.
So please don’t blink, because I think, A sweep will leave no doubt
Forget about the Finals, This round is for everything
Win this round & you’ll have found, that you’re the new NBA King
Utzworld THE BANNER HOLDER, Please say a Prayer for us
Not that we need, God to intercede, Because in Kobe we trust
This is it Laker Nation, It’s almost time for the New Order to start.
It’s our time you see, Title & dynasty, Unleash Mamba, tear them apart.
WHAT TIME IS IT? I CAN’T HEAR YOU! WHAT TIME IS IT?
SAY IT LOUDER! IT’S SHOWTIME!!!! YOU D@MN RIGHT
YEAH, THO I WALK THRU THE VALLEY OF THE SPURS
I SHALL FEAR NO EVIL, FOR THE BADDEST MOFO IN

Good Morning My Purple and Gold Bleeding Fam Members!
Thanks everybody for the props! The Scum Antonio Sterns are going to be the proper road to take. Winning that Gold ball is never easy. But Kobe loves a challenge and is grooming this group to Save Private Ryan.
One love and carry on troops. Mamba24, Time for the military check in to these two videos.

After hearing all the so-called experts saying this is the last team we want to meet...I don't buy it!!!
I think this Story Book Season had to have the Lakers meeting the Spurs to end an era and pass the torch to the new Dynasty in the NBA...The Los Angeles Lakers.
Beating the Champs and then beating Boston is the only way to end this Story Book Season. I know you and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Should be a great contest tonight. I think we'll see the most focused Kobe we've ever seen. Look for Luke to drain some shots from the short corner. Guard the three-point line, boys!

Which is the REAL team of the decade?
Lakers '00, '01, 02 ? or Spurs '99, '03, '05, '07 ?
It reminds of that question we used to ask, "Which was the REAL team of the 80s, Bird's Celtics or Magic's Lakers?"
That question was answered in that classic '87 Finals series. Prior to that it was Magic's Lakers '80, '82, '85 versus Bird's Celtics '81, '84, '86, and it was a toss-up which was the better champion. Lakers beat Celtics mano a mano in '87 with that legendary baby hook of Magic over McHale and Bird, and followed with the Repeat in '88, and Magic's Lakers cemented themselves as the REAL team of the '80s, with Bird's Celtics as the Affirmed to Seattle Slew. After that Boston struggled in the wilderness for 20 years.
So this WC Finals series has historical significance because it will settle the question of who is the REAL team of this decade, Kobe's Lakers or Duncan's Spurs? After this moment, will it take 20 years for the Spurs to rebuild?

#4 checkin in. IT'S GAME DAY MOTHA-FRACKERS!!!
Like Kobe said last series, LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED.
It'll be hoppin at the downtown hoop dojo. I hope the Lakers are focused. And I don't for one second believe the Spurs we're holed up in their airplane. If they were, its not like it was coach seats on US Airways.
If you ask me, its Popovich playing the overconfidence card with the Lakers. Calling Kobe the best player in the world, stories about his team sleeping on the team charter (please, its not like its the team bus). Blah blah blah.
I hope the Lakers look to surgically kill the Spurs today. Cut em up with the offense, lock em down on D.
LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED.
Posted by: #4 | May 21, 2008 at 10:18 AM
Good Luck Andrew Bynum. Today is the arthroscopic surgery.
Posted by: Botsoy | May 21, 2008 at 10:21 AM
Call me paranoid, but I am really worried about Kobe's right pinkie finger.
Anytime Bowen or Horry get near that thing, they are going to see a big BULLS-EYE.
This worries me.
Posted by: Amazing_Happens | May 21, 2008 at 10:24 AM
Will the quick start Laker strategy help them in this series? Do we know for sure that Manu will start or is he coming off the bench?
I like when we got off to good starts with the Jazz. It seemed like they were always trying to get up the hill and working really hard to do so. Do you think that will work (mentally) on the Spurs? I think it might and they might fatigue a little in the 4th. Their offense is lame (but smart) and it might help us get going each game to put them on their heels a bit and frustrate them.
GO LAKERS!!!

I on the other hand don't have a problem with you or your one liners. Never have and I don't think I ever will, thats just your style.

Mamba: "Utzworld THE BANNER HOLDER, Please say a Prayer for us
Not that we need, God to intercede, Because in Kobe we trust"
Gotta chin-check you there, my brother. As The Book says, all that we have comes from God - that goes for Kobe, his MVP, them 81 points he slapped against the Raptors, his not getting locked up for the Colorado incident and EVERYTHING in between. All that we are and all that we have comes from God. And we WILL NOT deny Him His rightful glory!
Having said that...GAME ON! LET US PRAY:
Dear God, we bless You. We praise You. We thank You. Deep in our hearts, many of us never imagined back in October 2007 that we would be here - facing Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. But You have allowed us - both through the faith of Lakers Blog & the entire Lakers Nation AND through the ability of our beloved Purple & Gold - to be here. We cannot thank You enough. We cannot praise You enough. They said we wouldn't be here, but HERE WE ARE! Thank You, Thank You, THANK YOU!!!
As we wave our banners in pride for the Purple & Gold in this series, we ask that You enable each and every player, coach, & training staff member of the Los Angeles Lakers to fully embrace their greatness and to play like the CHAMPIONS that they truly are. Let them play wth a spirit, determination and resolve that proves to every naysayer, player hater, sports reporter and analyst once and for all that we DESERVE to be here on this stage, at this moment, at this hour, at this time. May the strong bond of their unity manifest itself during all 48 minutes of this game.
We thank You for Kobe. Of all the lessons we wanted him to learn, You taught him the most important one: TEAMWORK. You have brought him to the place where he has had to render his faith and trust in his teammates. And they have answered the bell with swiftness and determination. Let that spirit remain with us during this series. Allow Kobe, once again, to lean on his partners in hardwood. May they answer the bell yet again.
We pray for Vlad Rad. May the ability that You blessed him with in Seattle take root again in this series. May the Sprus defense be confused and dumbfounded by his play. Let those 3 pointers fall like rain throughout the series.
We pray for Pau Gasol. Let him play with strength, honor and confidence. You have shown him through the Utah series what the true price of a champion is. Let him take those lessons and apply them on the court tonight. Let him break through the glass ceiling and play with passion and intensity. Let him block every shot, pound for every rebound, effortlessly flick for every point he scores.
Continue to remind LO of his famous words. This is the most important 7 (hopefully only 4-6!) basketball games of his career (for now!). Let him fully embrace his greatness. Let him shoot, let him slash, let him pound the glass. Put that fire in his spirit. Let him embrace the fullness of his greatness!
We pray for our Bench Mob. May they reclaim the spark that enabled them to dumbfound the analysts time and time again over the season. May they return to their lofty and high scoring averages. Let the shots fall like rain. Let them catch every rebound. Bring Jordan Farmar back into his groove. He's been on the national stage before with UCLA. Take the fear and doubt from his mind. Return his shooting stroke. Let him play like a champion throughout this series.
We pray for the Spurs as well. You have allowed them to win their championships. Let them play like true champions - no cheap shots, careless fouls and injury causing pick & rolls. True champions are unafraid to battle man to man. If they are indeed true champions, let them play like it througout the series - with sportsmanship, honor and respect for the game.
For our injured soldier Andrew Bynum who is in surgery today, we continue to pray for his healing. Let the doctors be skilled in their diagnosis and operating and may he recover in Your time and for Your glory.
We submit these prayers to You knowing that You are the God who answers our prayers. We thank You in advance and ask You, once again, to lead us into victory. We thank You for blessing our mighty Purple & Gold - our 2007-08 Los Angeles Lakers...AMEN!

Mambaaaaaaaaa!!!! Thank you for the roll call! I needed that. I was kinda getting the shakes and everything mannnnn.
Fatty- You are on FIRE this morning! Great stuff as usual.
Jesterguru- I agree with you (on the old thread) about the Spores fans. They do seem to be hitting and running. I find it kind of odd that we seem to know the Spores pretty well. What to expect from them, the amount of respect they deserve, etc. But the Spores trolls seem to be living in 2005 and haven't seen a single Laker game this season. Not to mention the evolution that occured once we picked up Pau.
Hmmmmmm. Makes me wonder what it might be like to sit with a Spores fan in their living room tonight. (Cue dream sequence music)
Spores fan- Who's the dude with the prison beard? How come my precious Timmy can't score on him at will?
Me- That's Pau Gasol.
Spores fan- Prowl Ganstinol?
Me- No, no Pow Gas All. Forget it genius. He's the dude we got for Kwami Brown.
Spores fan- WTF!!! Wait a minute. I remember Coach Pop crying about something earlier in the season.
Me-Yeah. Crying is right.
Spores fan- Who the @%$@ is that Vujasishichlich guy? What's up with that hair? Dude, he is really driving Parker nuts! Can he really be in someones grill like that?
Me- That's the guy we call The Machine. Look, see that 3 ball he just bombed on your boys? Happens all the time.
Spores fan- Ummm okay whatever. How in the @^%& is that #7 dude constantly getting to the rim on us.
Me- His name is Lamar Odom. He's the dude we tried to warn you about on the blog.
Spores fan- What's up with the dude with the ears? How can he stay with Tony like that?
Me-That's Jordan Farmar. I told my podna Mamba24 that he's a bad mofo and that he was gonna show you so. And lookie lookie christmas cookie, he is. Sucka.
Spores fan- Mannnnnnn. I can't watch this anymore. That “one man team” guy Kobe hasn't even taken a shot yet and we're down by 10. I'm gonna go kick the dog or something.
Me- Later sucka. We tried to warn you. We tried and you just didn't wanna hear it. Make yourself useful and bring me another beer when you come back. Gawd, I love this game and this team.
Yeahhhhhh mannnnnnnn

Today is game day in the Western Conference Finals....what? the Lakers are in Western Conference Finals? They are still playing at the middle of May. Wow!!!
What a year! here are some quotes a year ago:
**************************************************************************************
Fellow bloggers, we shared an incredibly tough year and it really hurts to get our expectations and hopes dashed like they were. Whether we’re GHE or GHF, we all bleed purple and gold when the Lakers lose. But remember that it’s very often the struggles you endure that will make the joy you will reap when we rise to the top again that much sweeter. Thanks for sharing your hopes, fears, thoughts, wisdom, and insight.
- LakerTom May 2007
Unfortunately, three years has been too long and we as Laker Nation owe Kobe more than going out in the first round. He and Phil deserve at least one more championship. And they deserve it soon. Anything less is unacceptable. Period.

Adios to the blog. I have reached the point where I feel that I can not contribute to this forum anymore. I try to be a rational voice in a sea of insane irrationality, but I see that it serves no purpose. I am a logical person, and logic is not even considered important. Is this final?

"match wit with extreme wit,"
Well, ased on what I've seen here from the Spurs fans, the Lakers are going to win in a sweep!

As he so often does, Plaschke misses the point in today's LAT column.
If you are a true champion, you WANT to play the very best possible opponent. The victory most worth having is to put away the best Western Conference opponent in a seven game series, no matter how many games it goes. Playing the Hornets, Jazz or Nuggets for the Western Conference Championship would taint its meaning.
Sure, this series against the Spurs will be challenging and nail biting. But emerging victorious from this test will make it all the more glorious. Then, the Lakers can go on to slay whomever emerges from the East.
I don't disrespect Plaschke's analysis of the depth of the challenge. I strongly disagree with his conclusion. This is our team. This is our year. Go Lakers!

Make yourself useful and bring me another beer when you come back. Gawd, I love this game and this team.
Yeahhhhhh mannnnnnnn"
Magic Man I have only one word for you: MAGNIFICENT!!!!! THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!! LIGHTS OUT!!!!!
utzworld THE BANNER HOLDER:"Gotta chin-check you there, my brother. As The Book says, all that we have comes
\from God - that goes for Kobe, his MVP,"
You know you right brother and to anyone I may have offended I deeply apologize.
I had a lot of doubts about including that line but I take full blame. Sorry to one and all.
And BANNER HOLDER thank you for keeping me in check brother. And thanks for
the prayer.

Plaschke is a kook. He's just another one of the talking heads that has to create (mostly) drivel to take home a paycheck. If I had my way, LakerTom would be on the payroll at the L.A. Times to offer REAL analysis and game breakdowns. (Kudos to the K brothers, who are just plain wonderful.)
Go Lake Show!

In keeping with the Latin flavor today...
Buenos dias a los mejores fanaticos del mundo!!!
Ok, now something you can understand...
It's gameday baby and I'm psyched as hell. Can't wait to watch the washed up, geriatric Spurs get blown out tonight.
Thank goodness for the NBA Gods who decided to play this earlier than the usual 10:30pm start on the east coast.

I think I'd forgotten how good it feels to hate the spurs. This is the way it's suppossed to be: Lakers vs. Spurs, Kobe vs. Duncan, Jackson vs. Popovich. Kobe, Phil, and the Laker organization can stake their claim to greatness(well even more greatness) with a win in this series.
Kobe will be given the opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with Shaq, and Duncan with his 4th ring, Phil will be in striking distance of his 10th ring, and clear proof that he is the greatest coach of all-time, and our Laker organization will be able to claim dominance in yet another decade!!!!
I don't know about y'all but this feels 100% right to me. The Lakers vs. the Spurs for the right to go to the NBA finals...The way it should ALWAYS be.!
