A few Jazzy thoughts
Just wanted to throw out two cents worth on a few elements I think could be important.
Length vs. Physicality
I could easily see this series evolving into a battle of the above listed. A starting lineup with Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Vlad Radmanovic and Kobe Bryant is nothing if not tall, which works both to create mismatches and gum up the crisp Utah ball movement that's made them the league's second-most prolific via dimes. Off the bench, Sasha Vujacic and (with any luck) Trevor Ariza enhance this advantage even further. But on the flipside, few teams play as relentlessly physical as Utah, a style that's often rattled the Lakers' focus in the past. Carlos Boozer, Deron Williams and Paul Millsap are the most frequently mentioned usual suspects, but Matt Harpring is no slouch along these lines. So brawny is his style that during the Lakers' March win in SLC, Phil Jackson opted, much to the chagrin of many Lakers Blog readers, for a struggling Luke Walton over Vlad Rad down the stretch specifically to body a guy Phil Jackson likened to "a linebacker."
The glass
The Jazz may be willing to go rough and tumble, but they're still among the league's worst at securing a rebound, all in all. The Lakers were often outrebounded by Denver during the opening round, but some extenuating circumstances can also be cited (Lamar Odom spending much of Game 2 sitting with foul trouble, Ronny Turiaf being sick, Denver's just plain good in this department). Assuming Round 2 goes a little more swimmingly, there should be no reason for the Lakers not to outboard their opponents. In particular, if they can keep Utah away from the offensive glass (where they're reasonably proficient) and cut down on second-chance points for the Jazz, their opponent could really wind up in a pickle.
Defensive communication
Between the pick and rolls, high screens, back screens and general cutting, the Jazz throw out schemes that make it easy for a defender to lose his guy. Thus, to quote the seminal band "Talk Talk," the Lakers must ... well ... "talk talk." As a guy who sits fairly close to the court, I can confirm that your purple and gold do indeed speak regularly among themselves (as opposed to last season, when a starting five of Helen Keller, Chief Bromden, Tommy Walker, Teller and Smush Parker would have created more chatter). But that doesn't mean they can't be on high alert to alert each other even more.
Defending the arc
The Lakers are among the league's best when it comes to overall protection of their basket, but remain middle of the pack when it comes to specifically guarding it from a three-point attempt. This could become an issue, since the Jazz rounds out the league's 10 best from downtown. Granted, Utah is hardly Golden State and doesn't launch oodles from distance, but the quality percentage hints of spots well picked. The Lakers can't ever take their eyes off a guy looking to spot up in the corner. In particular, Kyle Korver was quite the proficient bomber upon arriving in Utah, and Deron Williams was 59% on his treys against Houston.
Bear
I'm not a huge mascot guy, but after attending a game in Salt Lake, I'm a big-time Bear enthusiast. Dude rides a chopper onto the court to kick off the first and third periods and, at least during the game against the Lakers, he walked around the court on stilts while "Pour Some Sugar on Me" cranked. How does all of this specifically provide the Jazz with an advantage? I have no idea. But I refuse to believe a bear, a motorcycle and Def Leppard bring absolutely nothing.
Having now spouted, my prediction. Anyone expecting another sweep is either a serious Laker diehard or seriously deluded. Nothing wrong with either, but both parties are likely to end up rather disappointed, at least in terms of the number of games involved. The Jazz is a balanced, extremely disciplined squad and just about everyone, even the young players, have tasted the Western Conference finals. Boozer is an All-Star, Mehmet Okur (who played an important role with the Pistons' '04 championship) was one in '07 and Williams should be one, but plays in a conference with too many point guards. AK-47 may be a little nutty, but he's a pretty versatile fourth option. Ronnie Brewer is an improving young guard. Harpring, Korver, and Millsap create a nice bench. These cats can play.
But even taking Utah's talent into account, I think the Lakers have more. The Lakers beat Utah three times this season, including a game in Salt Lake without Pau Gasol or Andrew Bynum. Derek Fisher knows a lot of what they do. The Lakers bench is better, especially if Turiaf is healthy (which he seems to be). And while no team can truly "stop" Kobe, I'm thinking Utah could really find itself in trouble trying. Brewer's solid, but not good enough. Putting Kirilenko on him means Vlad Rad will have the opportunity to rediscover his shooting touch over a smaller defender. Williams might be the most effective, but making him expend that much energy on the other end helps the Lakers. I'm picturing a hard-fought battle that prompts many a bitten nail, but one that swings the Lakers' way when it's all said and done.
Prediction: Lakers in 6 (although 7 sounds just as believable).
AK

JWW, it is now Sunday, a game day. For your convenience on a short post, I dedicate this post to you as the Blogger of the Day. Because it is your day, no names will be written down. Just you, no waste of time, nothing to scroll down.
Now can we go back to the Lakers without any further discussions on the roll call. Let us bury the hatchet and unite under one team.
I hope you will grant this simple request. Go Lakers

Bynum's doctors say two weeks, Bynum says a month or better yet, net season.
This guy needs to toughen up and play.

Jazz is going to sweep the Lakers. Defense always win. Lakers defense sux. They gave more than hundred points per game. AK will terrorize Kobe. e wont let him get a shot. Deron W is the assasin. Jazz in 4. Clips 2009!
Of course, all Lakers get along when youre winning. No frustration yet. Will see how Kobe holds up when they face a real team like the Jazz. Kobe wins MVP that means he will be curse, no ring....like Nash U Nowitzki. I hope the Celitcs lose too. Either Chris Paul will win the Real Ring this not just an MVP trophy....what?!!!!!

Mamba24,
Where are you? Dude don't be unfair, you supposed to Honor me in your roll call tonight, right? I have ballons, cake and ice cream ready to celebrate here. All these will be wasted if I don't get the honor tonight.
Anyway, I'm just kidding. I don't deserve to be one of the honorable mentioned here in the blog. But please Mamba24 don't turn your back from us, not today nor tomorrow. We are one happy big family here. Don't listened to those black sheeps of our family, they are just jealous as nobody likes to read their post.

The Jazz wold play their usual physical play against the Lakers. Lakers' role players (Vlade, Sasha and Jordan) will need to make those open shots to prevent the Jazz from double/triple team Kobe. The key player in this series is Lamar. He need to contain either Boozer or Okur. FIsher will has a handful with DW as well. I'm in Bangkok at the moment which is bad news since they don't televise the live Lakers game over here. I will monitor the game from my computer....I'll be back in time for game 2.
Lakers in 6 (I'm being realistic here, the Jazz is much better than the Nuggets.

Why I gotta listen to a bunch of people begging for one man to post? Am I taking Weathermans side..YES!!! Why?? Cuz I still have to read from people name "The spirit of Mamba"..or "The Ancient Ghost of Mamba"..oh my bad..i meant to say..Please..please..please Mamba..were are you..i need your roll call..i gotta have it..i won't eat unless there's a roll call" Is this provoking..YES!!..but adding "FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT DONT LIKE LONG POST OR WONT SCROLL DOWN" then including a roll call afterward is provoking also..and spiteful...and if this post don't go through then say "Hello Double Standard"

There is tough, and there is 'Lakers Tough'
Utah is a physically tough team. The Jazz players have completely bought into Coach Sloans system. They will give it their all. They will play hard nose D. They will hold, grab, flop, and cheat. They will do whatever it takes to win.
They believe, the end justifies the means.
But, I noticed in the Houston series, they lacked at times the most important kind of toughness. The type that closes out and wins the close games. In the 4th, they struggled to move the ball, take and make the shot, and looked confused. Simply, they lacked the mental toughness to overcome the adverse situation.
The Lakers have been accused of being soft. You bang with them, and they back down. They lose their heads if it doesn't go the way they drew it up on the board.
The example people point too is the Celtics game in December. The Celtics pushed, shoved, grabbed, got away with it, and the Lakers melted.
I feel that was the game, that changed the Lakers season. They were playing good, but they lacked the mental toughness to compete with the big boys of the NBA. And the Lakers knew it. So, they built off that game and looked for opportunities to improve, and they did.
How much so? Look at two primary examples.
Game #3 Denver - The Nuggets were down two, and looked to film on how to beat the Lakers. Old Red Aurbach Celtics stuff. If you can't beat him fair, then cheat and maim them. Take 'em down, hurt them, throw elbows, try to end players careers, get them mad, and you will win. Because a mad team, out of control loses focus, and loses the game, and maybe the series.
Denver tried hard, and I'm sure they made Red proud, but this time it failed. The Lakers did the hardest and most difficult thing they could do. They did nothing. That takes a certain kind of toughness, mental toughness.
The results? It backfired on Denver. They were the ones who lost composure, they became well, madder, not the Lakers. They lost their focus, the game, and the series.
Game #4 Denver - Now we got a game. Denver has given up on the 'hurt them, and they will break' strategy.
Its now late in the 4th, both teams are trading baskets. The crowd has gone wild, the atmosphere is frenzied.
It come down too, which team crumbles from the pressure? The odds are, the visiting team cracks first and loses.
Now there is Denver tough, and there's Lakers tough. The Lakers amid all the screaming and yelling, quietly executed with precision their offense. Denver tried to match, but it was they, that wilted under the pressure.
This is why my prediction for this series is so one sided for the Lakers.
Utah is very good team. But they lack the right kind of toughness to win a close series. And you know what they say, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going".
And that's why I say, "There is tough, and there is Lakers tough."
Lakers in five.

Poll:
Have any of you gone to the Jazz blog to make predictions?
Posted by: Vman | May 04, 2008 at 08:29 AM
Sorry AK
But you're smoking crack on your prediction.
Utah's a terrible road team, they won't steal 1 at Staples.
Game 1&2: Tthat's +2 for the Lakers
Game 3&4: The Lakers are an excellent road team, I'll give the Lakers +1
Game 5: Back in LA, cya later Jazzers +1
I'm hoping for a sweep but I'll be disappointed if it goes beyond 5.

Moneyman Memo,
Dude, you guys want to be us. The thing I hate about Jazz fans (like Kings fans) is the profound inferiority complex you guys have. You guys hate us because you so badly want to be us. It's really disturbing.
GO LAKERS!

Before Rd. 1 started the Lakers broke the 55 wins goal set by the LakerTom's whack jobs buddies for the last two years.
Denver was swept. AI said: "They're really good, too many poisons in their team." Absolutely true, not only the team but also in their blog.
Before Rd 2, the MVP rumor has been released by technology through email, blogs and links. No official confirmation from David Stearns, he could be suspended before the award's ceremonies.
Utah Jazz is next. Next blood to be shed on the road to Championship.
To all Laker fans and players, keep an eye on the ultimate objective.
UNITY UNDER ONE ASPIRATION - O'BRIEN TROPHY
ps. Put Boozer and Williams on a leash....make them obey (from Mike T. in dementia lol!)

Good Morning, Laker Nation!
A GOOD DAY! GAME DAY! THE DROUGHT IS OVER! LET THE REIGN COME IN THE FORM OF COUNTLESS BASKETS AGAINST THE POORLY NAMED UTAH JAZZ!
I read today's article on Derek Fisher and it made me sad and angry. We need to feed the Utah Jazz and their classless fans their just karma by breaking their spirit. Visciously booing Derek Fisher for his love for his daughter and the suffering he has experienced at her side is unforgivable.
This series is a matter of principle. And that principle is standing up for your teammate, the Great Derek Fisher, a man of pure class, and leaving the fans of Utah forlorn and hopeless.
Today we win. Wednesday we win. In Utah we win.
GO LAKERS!

Toad - present and accounted for SIR! Ready to kick butt & take names! Ready to destroy the Jazz to start us off right in this series! Ready to defend the name of our dear Fish against these classless trolls! (Man - wasn't that the tackiest, ugliest, most inhumane response to a great family man's decision to support his family that you've EVER heard from not only the fans but the owner??? Unbelievable.....sad.....)
Anyhoo - thank you Toad & complex brotha & Laker Nation for supporting our dear Mamba24 & carrying on the great traditions of this award winning blog. It's a joy to come on the site every day & check out what's going on & add my own comments & observations. Thank you K-Bros for helping us maintain our "blogmunity"!

The name Jazz is misnomer...
Lakers came from 1000 lakes of Minnessota, it was reduced to few lakes in LaLaLa land. How about Utah? Is there something jazzy about the dry land? Well, there is a salt lake, a winter place in the Wabash mountains, canyonlands in the east, there is nothing jazzy out there. In the rural Utah, some men hide from their many wives skirts. Well, the name Jazz came from New Orleans Jazz, the home of Pistol Maravich, then the team moved to Utah in 1979, to replace the Utah Stars of ABA in the early seventies. When they joined the NBA they continued the name Jazz in Utah. They trade everything in NBA from teams, coaches, players etc. Someday AK/BK will be ambitious they will also trade this blog to another team like New York??? According to Wikipedia, N/O NFL team adopted the name Saints while Utah got the name Jazz, they should be trading names back, it should be Utah Saints referring Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints while goes back to its proper place instead stinging Hornets. Ironically, Lakers should also be renamed the team to Lakers Freeways or Lakers Smog to describe the area. huh? lmao!!!
Too much ado with names, let's go back to basketball.

Before the first game is played, Lakers already won the nod of the owner of Utah Jazz, Larry Horne Miller. He is all Hollywood. We need just need Spielberg, Nicholson, Denzel, Garcia and some of our TV celebrities prodding him to give up the fight. Why?
Here are his business dealings aside from the Utah Jazz. According to Wikipedia, Miller is also the owner of an automotive dealership, and a variety of other business ventures including Prestige Financial, Jordan Commons, Larry H. Miller Megaplex Theatres, KJZZ-TV, Miller Motorsports Park, the FANZZ chain of sports apparel stores, and the EnergySolutions Arena (previously called "Delta Center"). Miller attracted national media attention when he pulled the movie Brokeback Mountain from his Megaplex Theatres in early 2006.
Not much to do with Utah interests, he's more of a Culver City mogul, these are all Hollywood, so we can safely say, we own the owner of Utah Jazz. He could pay Deron Williams and Boozer extra bonus to give up the fight!(LOL,what a correlation?)
