Four for 2

May 23, 2008 |  1:30 pm

Game 2, she is off in the distance.  But four items I'm curious about require no wait to eyeball.

1) Early game execution: The Lakers experienced mucho issues putting the ball in the net during the first half (and some of the third), but I'm willing to write them off as "layoff" rust.  Perhaps I'm being generous, especially since conventional wisdom dictated that any theoretical cobwebs would be offset by the Spurs having just concluded a tough seven-game series, being forced into a Sunday night sleepover party on a plane and their roster sporting an average age of 46.  As we saw, that was hardly the case.  But the dust settled on a Lakers win and they've rarely fallen far behind at any point during the entire playoffs, so there's no need to make a big thing of this... unless the early sledding is just as tough tonight.  Then you gotta wonder if a fly in fact lives in the Lakers ointment.

2) How Tim Duncan is defended: Phil Jackson set out to avoid doubling The Big Fundamental as much as possible, whether that meant (mostly) Pau Gasol or Ronny Turiaf left to his lonesome in a quest to contain him.  For the most part, PJ stuck to the script.  How'd it go?  Depends on how you look at it.  On one hand, Duncan racked up 30 points and often had his way in the paint (particularly against Gasol).  But he also took 25 shots to get those 30 points, was forced into a fair amount of misses (12 for 25, with a decent chunk of misses due to good solo contesting) and never truly took the game over.  Even if he had, it's also pretty unrealistic to expect entirely quiet nights from Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli.  One will undoubtedly get his.  The key is to make sure all three don't.  Keeping as many defenders as possible freed up helps that mission.  If anything, I'm much more concerned about the 18 boards Duncan grabbed than his points.  If the Lakers can do a better job keeping him off the glass, I can live with 30-ish points for TD and sub-20 nights from the other two fellas.

3) The "Which Kobe will we see?" over/under:  As in, how many segments we'll see/hear debating whether Kobe's going to come out more "aggressive" during Game 2.  I'll witness firsthand some folks asking Phil, Kobe or Kobe's teammates before the game, but will likely end up missing much of the radio/TV chatter while inside Staples, along with the TNT in-game stuff, since we can't hear anything on our monitors.  Y'all can fill me in.

Personally, I think this storyline is being way the hell overblown.  Was I surprised to see Kobe take so few shots?  Sure, although Bruce Bowen was actually doing a good job denying him easy looks (an angle going rather ignored).  Do I think he could have looked for his points a little earlier on?  I guess.  But even if Kobe went a little too far in facilitator mode, I'll still take that everyday over forced shots.  That general approach is what's gotten the Lakers where they are now.  Plus, if LO or Pau had converted a few of those chippies Kobe helped set up, or Derek Fisher canned a couple of those pull up jumpers that didn't even involve Bryant, the halftime buzz would have been all about "the Lakers neck and neck with the Spurs, despite Kobe only taking three shots."  The Lakers have been successful in large part because Kobe's gone out of his way to involve everyone else.  Obviously, what's happening on the floor can change contexts, but that doesn't mean babies and bathwater are in need of wholesale tossing.  Until  the Lakers start falling 20 down on a semi-regular basis because of an "unaggressive" Kobe, I think we can chalk up Game 1's circumstances as the exception proving the rule and move on.

4) Sasha Vujacic and Bruce Bowen, Round 2: They'll rarely draw the assignment of guarding each other, but that doesn't mean chippiness between the two is impossible.  Early in the fourth during an SA  possession, Bowen delivered an elbow away from the ball that floored Slovenia's Favorite Son for about about 20 seconds before he eventually rejoined his fellow Lakers on the other end of the court.  At the time, I thought Sasha might have been trying to sell it a bit (I could see the contact, but "The Face" ain't above selling a dive). Then I talked with him in the locker room.  Vujacic was still mad about the hit, labeling it "unnecessary" and even expressing hope the league would look at it.  Both players are very feisty and completely capable to get under another player's skin.  I don't consider Sasha to be a "retaliatory" type, but he also backs down from nobody.  If they get tangled up again, I wouldn't be surprised to see some fireworks.

PsLakerFan,
Unctuous posting today. Greasy and deep fried postings.

Coach,
I was giving you props not jacking your style homie.

Dare I say...The Empire Strikes Back? Can't you just see Vader in a spurns jersey?

VADER: There is no escape. Don't make me destroy you. You do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover you power. Join me and I will complete your training. With our combined strength,
we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy!

LUKE: I'll never join you!

VADER: If you only knew the power of the dark side. Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father.

LUKE: He told me enough! He told me you killed him.

VADER: No. I am your father.

Shocked, Luke looks at Vader in utter disbelief.(gotta love that line in the script.)

LUKE: No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!

VADER: Search your feelings. You know it to be true.

LUKE: No! No! No...really tonight you're gonna find out who your daddy is...D*ck!

Inhale now as I blow smoke at the screen...

Don't forget that Duncan was, in reality, if not officially, 11-24 from the field, as Kobe's putback into the Spurs' net was credited to Timmeh.

Andrew,

“C'mon brother, the next Mike T? No way I went that far off the deep end, ha! Just throwing out a big "what if". It's definitely not a no brainer though, at least from a front office perspective.”

AZ, the Mike T. reference was really a combination of compliment and jest. Of course, none of us has even matched or will match Mike T. insane mix of blindness overruling intelligence. He will be unique in the history of the blog. 10 years from now posters will still allude to the hilarious Jackson Journals and Kwame Brown’s calves (for you, ex).

I admit I have been worried because we don’t hear as much from you as we would like. You and ex have always been great Lakers fans and contributors despite being the staunch GHE realists on the blog but we don’t want to lose you now that fantasy has become reality and there is nothing negative to post. LOL.

Maybe I’ll start elevating the GHF smack to give you something to respond to. You know, like I wouldn’t trade Andrew Bynum for LeBron James, which I firmly believe but would give you an opportunity to remind me of too much blue sky and over-optimism.

I always love how proponents of trading for established players for draft picks seem to assume that their rookie is going to play like a 3 or 4 year vet the first year. Unless Derrick Rose turns out to be Magic (which he won’t), expect him to take at least as long as Chris Paul and Deron Williams to become a star. I still say it is a real stretch to project this guy to be that good. He cannot distribute the ball or shoot it as well as Paul or Williams and will end up playing shooting guard and may not even be a star player.

Tom

Tim,

“I'm not sure if it was LakerTom or who it was that said the Lakers wouldn't trade Bynum for LeBron straight up (if such a thing were possible)... that's one trade you could bet your bottom dollar the Lakers would make.”

Surprise! Yes, it was me that made the statement that I would not as general manager of the Lakers trade Andrew Bynum for any current player in the league, including LeBron James. Before you disregard my statement as typical LakerTom over-the-top enthusiasm, let me extrapolate the reasons for my position before you decide I am crazy.

First, building a championship basketball team is dramatically different from building a fantasy basketball team. Stats driven fantasy sports cannot account for the intangibles such as chemistry and key role players who provide the glue and are not given due credit for their impact and the importance of the hard work and team play that they generate. Trading Drew for LeBron sounds like a no-brainer on first take but ignores what the Lakers really need to be a truly dominant NBA team, which is a strong physical presence in the paint on offense, defense, and the boards, which is exactly what Drew provides.

Not only does LeBron not solve the Lakers need for power in the post but he would be a terrible fit in the Triangle Offense and playing along side Kobe since he needs to have the ball in his hands to be effective. The Lakers would have to totally change their offense to accommodate LeBron, which would raise serious risks of destroying the team’s current great chemistry and closeness. In fact, of all the teams in the NBA, the Lakers are the worst possible fit for LeBron James because of Kobe Bryant and the Triangle Offense. Watching LeBron play in the playoffs, there are not enough basketballs for he and Kobe.

Second, trading Andrew Bynum for LeBron James would require the Lakers to include several other players to make the trade meet CBA rules since both teams are well over the NBA salary cap. Drew currently makes $2.2M per year whereas LeBron makes $13.0M, which means that the Lakers would have to include one or more additional players with salary around $10.8M, which would further weaken the Lakers. Who do you give up? Losing Lamar Odom would hurt us in many areas, especially the boards. You can’t give up Pau since he is going to be your center. Again, the trade weakens the Lakers.

Third, trading big for small (which is what this trade is still about) is never a good idea. If you evaluate the importance of position in the game of basketball, the toughest position to fill is center. For every great center, there are dozens of great guards and forwards. Forwards, in fact, are the least important positions on the team compared to centers and guards. In Drew, you have a player who perfectly fits the needs and chemistry of the team and who shows definite signs of becoming one of the greatest centers in history. LeBron is truly a magnificent athlete – maybe the best in the NBA – but he is still a forward and not a player who can dominate defensively the way that Drew can. It would be like trading Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for Elgin Baylor. Only in fantasy basketball.

Fourth, Andrew is just 20 years old where as LeBron is already 24 (although I still contend that the guy has to be 30 years old). Not only will you get more years of performance from Drew but he will also extend the Lakers championship window by 4 years, while Kobe and LeBron will overlap their careers more. That is what is really special about Drew, that he is our next franchise player that will extend the Lakers dominance beyond the Kobe Bryant years. Barring injuries, Drew will make the Lakers better for a longer period of time.

Fifth, when a player demonstrates the unique talent and potential that Andrew Bynum displays to possibly become the next great Lakers center, a general manager would be a fool to throw away that and trade for LeBron James, a player who may never evolve into a winning leader and whose attitude is questionable in many ways. From the moment I saw Andrew Bynum respond to Shaq’s brutalizing in the game against the Heat in his rookie year, I knew Drew was going to be a Hall of Fame center. You may call it foolish optimism and over-the-top, but remember this is the guy that the great Jerry West said made the Lakers the best team in the league BEFORE trading for Pau Gasol.

Bottom line, the Lakers will NOT trade Andrew Bynum for any other player in the NBA.

Period…………………………….

Greetings Lakerville !!!!!

I made a quick pit stop to a Spurs blog and was happy to see Laker fans bum rush it and inject FACTS to all their belly achin about "The Refs". I predicted they would have their Hearts ripped out and the Spurs blog proves that. They believe game 2 will be different. I agree. Tonight, I think we'll see a more focused and intense Pau ( I'm sure he's been hearing the soft whispers and wants to Man Up ) I think Jordan will shoot his way out of his "woe is me" mode but if nothing else, keep an eye on Kobe ( I get that KB 40pt plus night vibe) L.O and Sasha.

I believe by climbing back from 20 down to the defending Champs, our youngsters got a serious, much needed jolt of CONFIDENCE and tonight, the rest of the League will experience Shock n Awe, Purple n Gold style.

On another note, I'm with Laker Tom 110% on the insane hypothetical topic of trading Drew for a #1 pick. Even as of TODAY, I wouldnt trade Drew for ANYONE or ANYTHING and that includes K.G ! I'm not sure what started this annoying topic but I remember Drew being a top 4 Big in the league before going down injured. Only behind D Howard, KG and Yao in terms of overall game. The difference with Drew in the middle as opposed to Pau, is like Night and Day. Drew "developed" a finesse game from working with Kareem. His footwork and fluid movements in the paint, as well as his timing, has Cap stamped ALL OVER IT but AB is a NATURAL power Big. He WILL become the next great NBA Center if he's still under Kareem's wing for at least, 2 more years. Cap will combine both aspects of his game and Drew will develop into KING KONG.. I promise. Dont buy into our current success with Pau as our Big, as the Blueprint for the future. No, No, No.. Drew is Our Center, Pau - PF thats the very scary near future for anyone NOT wearing Purple n Gold

Game 2 Lakers 103 Spurs 97 Kobe- 43pts

Thats my story and I'm stickin to It !!!!

GO LAKERS !!!!!

Rocky,

Missed your post yesterday about my comments on the Bynum for LeBron trade. Rather than repeat myself, take a look at my response to Tim-4-Show, which is to you, too. Thanks.

Tom

Bruce BowWowen is a real sack of garbage on the basketball court. I don't know the man personally, and I'm sure he's a nice guy off the court, but his game is based on dirty play. For him to be recognized as a great defender is ridiculous. It wouldn't displease me if a well placed elbow finds its way into Bruce's mouth tonight.

Isn't interesting how TD got credit for that bucket, but didn't get the credit for the forearm he shoved into Kobe's back on that play?

GOD - we knew it man! You ARE a Lakers fan!!! Don't be posting anymore nonsense about not being interested in sports or the outcome of the game - it's beneath you. Besides - God's not supposed to lie, right?

complex - right on! I'm with you & Laker Tom too! We win tonight? Check. We have the next dominant center in the NBA? Check. The rest of the league is crapping in their shorts thinking about that? Check.

sonnybelfast - I forget - are you a troll in good standing with the blog, or a Laker fan?!!

GO LAKERS! SPUCK the FURS!!

7 to O'Brien........

Bowen really did get away with a cheap, dirty shot on Sasha.

Might be a good time for Ronny go all Predator on Bowen and remind that sad sack buckethead to play ball and not try to hurt people.

Hmmmmm there might be another bandwagon in there somewhere... LOL

Check out the picture on the front of this page.

Which domino fell first? Robert getting fresh with LO.

I don't like the fact that Lakers fans are trolling on Spurs blogs, but what're you gonna do.

AK - I agree with you about point 1 and would extend that to hoping the team doesn't leave anymore chippies at the rim. That just reaks of tentativeness and is just blood in the water for the Spurs. LO needs to finish strong - 3-4 dunks per game was a goal he set for himself. Fisher needs to drain those open looks as well.

On point 2, I mentioned in the previous thread that I think Duncan won't make as many of those mid-range shots as he did in game 1. Those power moves to the rim, the hook shots and up-and-unders are pretty much money though. Given Timmy's advantage, they ran a lot of the offense through him. My guess is this game, they try to force the issue with Parker and let him dribble around more, trying to create havoc in the pick-n-roll and with penetration. A skinnier, but equally as effective version of when Deron Williams turned it on last series.

On point 3, as I also said in the previous thread, I think the "which Kobe will we see" talking point is practically irrelevant. In my assessment, San Antonio's strategy against him was difficult enough for him to have to take an entire half to figure out how to exert his advantage against it. Which Kobe we'll see tonight will depend more on what the Spurs choose to do defensively and less to do with any agenda he's going to have going in.

Lastly, I hope that Sasha vs Bowen continues tonight. My earlier prediction was that Manu was going to take issue with all the reports that Sasha shut him down and will force the issue tonight. I don't know if I trust letting Sasha do the Rick Fox/Dennis Rodman - get in their heads thing. I don't think Sasha has the brain for it.

Bowens version of 'In your face' defense.

http://tinyurl.com/3tsvtx

Bowen can be a cheap shot artist. A lot of times, he plays ferocious defense, but he is excessive, especially when he knows (or thinks) he's not being watched. If you can watch him for about 10 minutes straight, he'll do something dirty. Being physical is one thing, and generally speaking, that's how the Jazz are, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Spurs do that too. But Bowen lets his arms (and legs) go and doesn't really care where they land. I don't think he's always aiming to hurt someone, but he doesn't make any effort to control his movement. And this will get worse the older (and slower) he gets. That said, Sasha is clearly a graduate from the Vlade Divac School Of Flopping. But Sasha's defense is much better. He moves his feet pretty well and he gets right up there and denies the first step. I think that's really good against someone like Ginobli, who doesn't have a quick first step but is extremely agile and dangerous once he's moving to the rim. Ginobli clearly didn't like the checking, and with his bad ankle, it slows him down just a little more. Go lakers!

AT THIS LEVEL OF NBA:

These players are like thoroughbreds, fine tuned, amazing atheletes with grace, agility and power. A simple 4 day lay off can thorw them off their rythm and ultimately spell disaster.

Glad game 1 is behind us and the laker team should be in tune and in sync to react and play. Cannot afford to start slow as Spurs are not going to make same mistake twice.

My predictions Lakers will score over 100 and win.

Hey guys,

I'm new to this here blog! Please welcome me so I can feel special thanks! I've been to a few blogs but this right here is probably the best Lakers blog ever! Every blogger in here has a distinct personality that just bleeds purple and gold.

The Kobe that we see tonight will be the same Kobe we've been seeing all year! The same one that will strike his opponent with 99% accuracy until they beg for mercy, and then strike thrice more times for good measure!

Go Lakers!

"I don't know if I trust letting Sasha do the Rick Fox/Dennis Rodman - get in their heads thing"

I don't see why not. He's already accomplished that guarding players such as Mike Bibby and Chris Paul (and players he wasn't guarding too like Carmelo)

LakerTom,

I need to give you credit for coming up with such a detailed argument. You must be a lawyer or something. I disagree with you on every point made except the second one, which pretty much ends the discussion.

I do believe that it's a no brainer though, if it was possible that the Bynum/Lebron deal could happen. Kobe's got less than five prime years left. To be able to replace him with Lebron in his prime would be ridiculous. That's not even mentioning a Kobe/Lebron/Gasol/Lamar fearsome foursome ballin' machine we'd have for the next five years and beyond. That would pretty much guarantee us a five peat plus some. I could on and on about this, but it'll never happen. It's a fun hypothetical though.

Bynum at this point, has a chance to be a great player. Lebron is already a great one.

It's a no brainer in my opinion.

Go Lakers!

Thanks for the link, although I'm a little embarrassed it was right here on the Times.

P.S.
I've really enjoyed the "Nice" Jon K. I've seen lately.

Why do I find it funny, just imagine tall kids with a small ball, jumping up and down like a pogo stick, trying to steal the ball from others like little kids, pushing and shoving like little kids and throwing tantrums when things don't go there way. Sorry, I did not mean to give you an impression that I do not like the NBA, I do.

Just remember, I do have an image to keep, that is I must be fair so please don't ask for favors in public. I suggest when no one is looking close your eyes and pray real hard for your team and I might make some concession for you. Just remember just once because I have them pooooor Spurs fans on their knees praying just as hard. Don't worry I will stall the Spurs fan for this game.

By the way glad you pray and make sure you brush your teeth before you pray as God does not like smelly breadth kid praying.

Thanks for the support, Complex, and the vision and passion to see Drew’s potential. Drew-Pau-Lamar is the front court blueprint for the Lakers next dynasty. Too many fantasy sports general managers out there who would break up what may turn out to be the greatest front court since Parrish-McHale-Bird before they even get a chance to play.

Good afternoon Laker Nation!! Good Afternoon Brothers K!! Great points made on this blog Brothers K. I made a similar observation to some (well, many) dejected but fiesty Spurs fans regarding Duncan and their "Big 3" One SPur fan pointed out to me that they'll win because of Duncan alone because "LA can't contain Duncan" I laughed and said "YES I kknow he had 30 18 and 4 blocks. Does that indicated we "stopped him?" lol I told him the key was Parker and Ginobili being taken out of their games almost entirely for the last 12 minutes. Anyways long story short the fan FINALLY understood that Phil and the Lakers will live with Duncan doing the load of scoring every night as long as Ginobili and Parker have mediocre games.... Just want to add some of my own points:

Lamar HAS to get off tonight and turn in his usual 16 and 10rebounds. He looked "lost" at times out there again and missed some "gimmee" buckets.

Pau needs to either do layup drills or TWO handed dunking drills b/c I could swear he missed at least 4 "chippies" as you guys call them.

Sasha was fantastic as was Kobe. Turiaf's energy and Farmar's energy and play were an improvement a big one for Farmar especially. Radmonovic played better than good *(for him) in rebounding and scoring spots.

YOu can bet Laker nation that the Spurs will execute the exact same game plan as Game 1 only with less bench players so we can not afford to "shake off the rust" late in the 3rd quarter...... Need to match them basket for basket , intensity and focus (I know they're cliched words but they work so well) needs to be equal.. no HIGHER than the Spurs team as youth and energy is on our side at least theoretically, lol GOD BLESS !!! Be back later Laker Nation..

Some how the troll definition got changed a little after march of this year:

Old School: Non - Laker Fan, but always negative toward the Lakers. Sonny was exempt after a few trite bordering comments, when he became more of a hub of outside information.

2008 Post February: Anyone REGARDLESS of Laker Fan status, as long as you ripped Kobe or the team became a troll. KL - Gunner- Mike T would have had the Scarlet Red T on their back. Sometimes fans were ripped for giving the tough love for the Lakers.

Even outside complimentary opinion to the Lakers are ripped and given troll status...

I kinda, sorta agree because I did feel "dirty and skanky" reading all the rah rah blah blah Spurs talk, peppered with just how much Los Angeles, as a city, Sucks blah blah blah.. but, this is the WCF and they are The Spurs!!! We have History !! One of my favorite Tee Shirts I wear weekly "One Lucky Shot, Deserves Another" .04
is all about the Spurs.. so I made an exception today because I wanted to see the pain revisted and remind them, Who Owns Who !! ( for the record, I kept it classy lol )

Finally, my last thoughts on Andrew Bynum. I'll admit, last year at just about this exact same time, I rushed to a radio to hear KOBEWATCH and thought, like many, trade Drew, trade L.O Hell Trade Austin Powers.. whatever it takes to get back to "elite" status and compliment the Best player in the NBA. Man was I SO VERY WRONG !!!!! That Kid is really gonna be a Problem once his health returns.. I could go on and on about what a difference he was this season before getting hurt, but its a safe bet to assume he's become my favorite Big in the NBA and I'm 110% on the Bynum bandwagon !!!

“ Laker Tom - excellent posts as usual. I just have one caveat to your RULE: "YOU DON’T TRADE A FRANCHISE PLAYER except in fantasy sports." My reply? Or unless you're Memphis!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!”

That depends on whether you believe Pau is a franchise player, which I don’t. Franchise players in my mind are restricted to that elite group of players around which you can build a franchise – Kobe, LeBron, Howard, Duncan and Shaq in their prime – and excludes a lot of guys that the media would label as franchise but who are really guys that should be #2 guys to true franchise guys. This group includes Pau, Wade, KG, Pierce, Allen, and a lot of players who are over-inflated all-stars but not really super-stars.

But I do understand what you were saying about Memphis. I think in a few years, the deal will be recognized as one that helped both teams. Pau was and is not a franchise player and Memphis will save tens of millions the next couple of years due to the trade. They also may end up with a better center prospect than Pau in his younger brother, who is now considered to be the best big man in Europe, not to mention Crittenton and the two first round draft picks. Other NBA teams did not have an expiring contract like Kwame’s and thus like to trash the trade as unfair. In reality, it was a smart move by Memphis and the Lakers good fortune that they had not wasted Kwame’s contract and waited for the right time to cash it in. Great luck for the Grizzlies, the Lakers, and Pau Gasol for sure.

I think it's reason enough to resign Kwame Brown next year for the league minimum.

It could happen!

GO LAKERS!

God- I saw that push in the back too, unfortunately they're not going to call that in the last minute of the game, so Kob's gotta go stronger than that to get the ball.

I know you have blessed the Black Mamba/Black Moses, who shall lead his tribe to the promised land. Thank you.

Andrew Bynum isn't going anywhere. I know there is the seductive lure of believing one's tinkering can excel the genius of destiny, BUT IT IS NOT FRICKEN HAPPENING!

Please...

If we want to discuss the future (and I see no reason to considering how exciting, dramatic, and fantastic the present is), let's talk reasonably about LITTLE additions that COULD possibly happen next year.

Things like Kwame Brown possibly returning.... or the possible signing of Kobe Brown's very close friend Corey Maggette... or the signing of free agent defensive stopper Quinton Ross for $1.2 million or so....

Little tinkerings are okay. But let's be reasonable. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

GO LAKERS!

Fatty:

“Drafting a point guard makes no sense for the Lakers. It would be many years before he could help. Unlike C Paul, Wade, Deron who got a lot of time on developing teams and matured in 2-3 years and still having some problems. A Lakers drafted pt guard would get less time and take many more years to mature.”

You are absolutely right. As a former point guard, I would love the Lakers to have a true point guard like Chris Paul or Deron Williams, even in the Triangle Offense which does not require a true point guard to run it. Adding a player with Paul or Williams ability with their ball handling and shooting abilities would make the Triangle more effective.

I also like the players we have now at guard. Between Fisher, Farmar, and Vujacic, the Lakers have three guys who can play point in the triangle. Fish has been exceptional, especially his defense, passing, and shooting. Farmar is slowly developing into a Tony Parker type point guard who can push the ball and bring energy off the bench. He could be a candidate for 6th Man of the Year down the road. And Sasha, while really a 2, is a good enough ball handler to play point at times in the Triangle.

Looking beyond the roster, defense at the point is more of our need than a Chris Paul or Deron Williams. I would be willing to trade a couple of our bench players to get the rights to a player like Russell Westbrook from UCLA who could turn out to be a real stopper at guard down the road. I would also like to look at Sun Yue, who at 6-9 has great defensive instincts and Lamar Odom type hops and length and could also turn into a top defensive player due to his unique combination of size, speed, hops, and quickness.

At any rate, you don’t trade the next great Lakers center for a rookie point guard unless his name is Magic Johnson.

Tom

Eric M.,

Thanks, but the "nice" Jon has a limited shelf life. Just kick him in the shins and you'll see.

Jon K.'s Bio-Chrono Tips for Game Two:

Physical: Having fun. Enjoying the game. Making physical choices to explore the joy of the game. Athleticism.

Emotional: Friendship. Brotherhood. Team unity. Sticking up for your teammates. Feeling a sense of bonding between teammates.

Mental: Respecting your team and the creative potential of your team working together as a unit.

Spiritual/Creative: A worksmanship-like approach to the game. Making creative decision for the pure reason of acheiving real-world results. Playing one possession at a time.

Players to watch: Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom, Luke Walton, and Trevor Ariza (if active).

GO LAKERS!

I'm surprised that some of you guys fell into Andrews Z's GHE trap. He and Exhelodrvr can't help them selves. We have a team that's 7 games away from the championship and they're still thinking about possible trades!! Come on!! In no way is it worth any amount of comtemplation. I'm just happy that we're in the kind of position that we're in despite the injury. Next year we'll see what happens with Bynum, but he's not getting traded. I think negativity is an addiction to the GHE brigade. Come on guys, rejoice. Lets get pumped up!

What's up Sonny B.!

Ken

What happened to all that chest pounding? All the loud furious talking during the game? Helloooo...earth to Garnet..why so shallow and disappointed during your press conferense? After all the commercials..all the big 3 talk..all the ESPN takes..The Boston 3 Party Jazz..and now you loose at home and your deflated..can't even look the camera in the lense so the world can see what you constantly show us when your in in Bean Town with your thunderous dunks and scream of passion. Why are you harboring a 10+ yr veteran shotting guard who seems more lost and useless than Tits on a Bore Hog? Peirce you my dude..inglewood native..fasho..but your team knows its over! Tell me somethng..you expect to go into Detroit and steal a roadie when you couldn't beat a young and inexperienced Atl team with a 6-10 center. Your doomed!! Hahaha..YOUR DOOMED!! And I can't over emphasize that any more.

Exorcist,

A NAG? You are probably right? LOL. Sold a lot of products and services in my life but I only really push something when I believe in it 100%, which is how I think about Drew. I’ve been a Lakers fan long enough to have watched every great Lakers center grow up but Mikan and Andrew Bynum has the makings to be as great a center as ever played the game in my humble opinion (as well as that of Jerry West & Kobe Bryant).

I may be over-the-top on my opinions from time to time but I make my judgments based on having played, coached, and studied the game of basketball for over 40 years. I sure don’t claim to be infallible or even objective (I am a Lakers fan after all) but I think I have been right far more than I have been wrong during my blog career.

In the spirit of this Lakers season, I will join Lakerman420 with a before-game smoke. which has been a 40-year personal and medical tradition of mine. It’s also a half hour before the weekend begins with the Toys’ “Smoke 2 Joints.” As Lakerman420 knows, the best parts of life are its spiritual adventures. As for drink, I prefer Vodka rather than beer, Champaign rather than wine. Go, Lakers.

Jon's Non-Bio-Chrono Keys To The Game:

1. Improved offense of Lamar Odom. Improved defense of Pau Gasol.

2. Sasha Vuljacic keeping up his fine defense on the gimpy Manu Ginobili.

3. Kobe starting earlier rather than later.

4. Making sure the Spurs fall squarely into the trap we've laid for them: Up the Tempo.

5. Ball movement. Ball movement. Ball movement. (Tire the Spurs out.)

6. Solid man-on-man defense and not falling into the lure of compulsive double-teaming players while on defense.

7. Never letting our guards down, even if we create a significant lead. (These Spurs are good. We should never forget that.)

8. Making sure our shooters get their rhythm by positioning themselves for the easy shot... as opposed to the three-point shot.

9. Being relaxed, confident, and hungry for victory.

10. Trust your teammates.

11. If you make a mistake, make up for it with greater energy, patience, and defensive presence.

GO LAKERS!

DREW TRADE CHATTER amongst GULLIBLE LAKER FANS:

Folks that are invloved in his chatter a) sound llike a broken record and nearing obsession level, and b) very GULLIBLE to even think of the notion that the Lakers brass would consider trading Bynum for this years #1 pick, last but not least c) if this was a Clipper oprgainiztion then yes I can imagine anyhting is possible.

So focus on the game at hand and don't worry about tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Forest Gump

" Drew-Pau-Lamar is the front court blueprint for the Lakers next dynasty. Too many fantasy sports general managers out there who would break up what may turn out to be the greatest front court since Parrish-McHale-Bird before they even get a chance to play"- Posted by: LakerTom

Tom, I Love Ya Man!!!!!!! I know I'm in the Minority here, BIG TIME but EVERY Win we've compiled since rd 1 has just been the proverbial "icing" on the cake for me. I'd be a big fat LIAR if I said I expected the Lakers to win a title THIS year. I jumped on the 55 game bandwagon last summer admist all the Drama because I bleed Purple and Gold but I didnt see how things would unfold and lead us to a title this season. A part of me Dies with each Loss in the playoffs but we've totally overacheived as far as I'm concerned and I look at this season as the Calm before the Storm. Theres only 3 things I'm really looking forward to this year, USC football, The Lakers w/ Drew-LO-Pau combo and the Presidential Election.. Thats It.. everything else is... icing lol
