Game 6: Keep an eye on...
Can the Lakers close out? These and other items of curiosities are addressed below.
1) Home cooking: It's played a role in this series and the playoffs in general, where a trip out of town has served Kryptonite for the visiting squad. In the Lakers' specific case, competing within the confines of SLC not only means dealing with an obviously prominent home court advantage, but an even more physical contest than usual, one where the locals receive a fair amount of latitude from the refs. Unfortunately, the early game 3/4 foul troubles of Derek Fisher (see below) and Ronny Turiaf's egregious ejection can at least make a case that similar courtesy hasn't been been extended towards outsiders. Pushing folks around is the name of Utah's game, and if they're allowed to play it, the Lakers need to take it upon themselves to stay even more focused. ![]()
2) The Fisher factor: Before rejoining the Purple and Gold, Derek Fisher did a stint in Utah as Deron Williams' mentor. Dude may have done too good a job. That D.Will is balling and remaining mentally cool throughout the series is a testament to Fish's teaching skills, but has also served as a thorn in the Lakers' side. Especially when it comes to the previously mentioned whistles Fish has drawn trying to slow his former protege, which has led to increased PT for Jordan Farmar. The Bruin may have shown signs of offensive life (albeit sporadic) with a big and-one drive in Game 5, but he's still getting used by Williams. Fisher must find an effective way to stop Williams while competing on enemy turf.
Fisher also plays a role in another issue. Utah's crowd is pretty much insanely loud and boisterous under any circumstances, but the Threepeat Club member brings out the worst in them. Even if you actually think Fisher milked his daughter Tatum's retinoblastinoma to get released from his contract, it doesn't change the fact that his daughter was seriously ill. Thus, reports of scattered fans attempting a "cancer" chant and one witty genius covering his eye to taunt Fish at the stripe are unquestionably tasteless. Aside from any effect this could have on Fisher himself, other Lakers could grow emotionally distracted by it. Of course, Jazz fans have rallied this team on behalf of Fish, so it could cut both ways. In any event, something to watch.
3) Vladimir Radmanovic: After floundering to the point where Phil Jackson floated the idea of giving his starting gig to a still-not-in-game-shape Trevor Ariza, Vlad Rad finally stoked nylon. 6-11 from the field with a trio of triples for 15 points. He also put a stamp on both halves of the contest with a hot first quarter, then hit a huge shot from distance to kick off the fourth. Vlad's been fairly erratic throughout his career (which explains in part why he's remained more of a "name" than a steady starter), but when he's on, he's capable of helping bury an opponent. And if point #4 is in any way an issue, the Lakers need everyone possible chipping in.
4) Kobe's back: Judging by Game 5, Bryant is more than healthy enough to keep on keeping on. But backs are tricky, capable of pulling a sneak attack and stiffening up out of nowhere (Remember, an innocent jumper brought all this on.). Obstacles seemingly less innocuous than a plane ride and a strange hotel bed have conspired to spark a flare up. Obviously, it would take either a hotel room with barred-up doors or a body cast to prevent Kobe from playing. But if setbacks happen, it'll fall on the supporting cast to come through again in big fashion, a much tougher task on the road.
5) The Unknown: Yeah, the Lakers closed out the Nuggets in Denver during round one, but that's a much different animal than doing so against a squad with an actual heart and a Game 7 looming in the balance of a failure to launch. Save Kobe and Derek Fisher, nary a member of these Lakers can treat this scenario with a "been there, done that." Even if you don't doubt this squad's collective confidence (and I don't), it's still a pretty big step.
Prediction: This is tough. Utah feels they let a winnable game slip away on Wednesday, which could leave them deflated. Of course, nothing lifts the spirits quite like familiar surroundings and a bunch of lunatic fans cheering. And this whole "home court" thing has been quite the phenom during these playoffs. On the flip side, I actually think the Lakers are capable of pulling this off and my original prediction was "Lakers in 6." I could just hedge my bets, predict Utah and be right in any case. But I gotta go with what's gotten me here. With semi-confidence, I'm saying the series ends tonight.

Tonight is the night guys. We need to CLOSE them (Utah Azz's, o'ops did i forget the J, my bad) OUT. Sure, Energy Solutions Arena will be loud actually very loud but we have an opurtunity to knock 'em out with a KO punch (Pau). NO FEAR !!!!!!!!!!! Lakers, grab ahold of this moment and seize it. Do not give them a chance to breath. Play this game like it were a game 7.

6) More of Sasha speaking Slovenian. Period. Not just to Korver, but any Jazz player, coach, fan, announcer, & hell, the freakin Towel-Boy! This will surely lock up the win in the Laker's favor.
j/k, Sasha's gotta keep his composure. Let me take care of the Slovenian insults.

that is a great shot of Pau's foul (yeah right). Look at the way Okur actually jumps, watch his feet. He tried to get some lift going forward to make it look like a foul. This was a vey bad acting job.
The very thought of ANY Jass fans chanting out cancer really gets my blood boiling at this point. It is 1 thing to think he abandoned him and boo him or try to ruin his concentration, but to drag his daughter into this like that, is preposturous. I hope they destroy the J(ack)azz tonight more than ever.
If you want to distract a player go the high road like this Hornets fan did.

I couldn't make this up if I tried. Here's the Mamba24 of the Jazz blog trying to rally the troops over there:
"Boy, I don't know about tonight's game but one thing I do know is ...
The Price is Right for the Jazz!
Yeah! Huh? HUH? You all with me?? Huh? Zoing! Get it? Because Ronnie Price is a player on the Jazz and there is a show called "Price is Right" on TV!!"

Banner Holder:
What an invigorating prayer...I come in agreement with you AMEN!
I too believe in the power of prayer and I am continuously stretching my hands toward my television during games and during real desperate times..i just lay my hands on the television (think I may just touch Vlad & Farmar tonite).
But it was so amazing that you mentioned the vindication for Fisher...because the scripture in Psalms came to my mind about Fisher today...how the Lord prepares your table in the presence of your enemies and all I could think about was how God's gonna get the glory out of this. Because all Fisher does by his actions and words is give honor to God...so I just thought I would let you know how ontime (and in the spirit your prayer was) and like you said whomever gets offended they know just where to find the scroll bar and can just roll on by...
I am expecting great things tonite...
GO LAKERS!

My keys to the game are very different than AK's.
1) Gasol. He withered in games 3 and 4, getting owned by the Utah bigs and spending wwaaaaayyy too much time whining to the refs. Gasol needs to play much tougher all the way around.
2) Lamar. Many times, it's "as Gasol goes, so goes Odom." When Pau disappears, Lamar often disappears with him. We need another big game from LO.
3) The Bench Mob. This group performs well at home, but has been outproduced by the Jazz bench in SLC. Sasha, Luke, Ronny, and Jordan need to at least keep the +/- even when they're on the floor. Ronny needs to stay out of foul trouble.
4) Trevor Ariza. As I said this morning, Trevor could be PJ's "secret sauce" if VladRad &/or Luke are struggling.
Nothing that's happened so far in Round 2 suggests that the Lakers should win tonight. Nothing in the history of Lakers-Jazz playoff games suggests that the Lakers should win tonight. But a gut check says, "So what? to all that." The Lakers are the better team. They are our team. This is our year. Go Lakers!

Hello, bloogers. It's Been awhile since I've posted but this got me too mad.
"Thus, reports of scattered fans attempting a "cancer" chant and one witty genius covering his eye to taunt Fish at the stripe are unquestionably tasteless."
Are you kidding me? Thats beyond tasteless, thats just horrible human behavior. How disgusting. Theres nothing you can do to ban something like that, but it's just pathetic and I hope it gets exposure on the broadcast. I want the announcers to expose the Jazz fans for being so horrific. This is not the same thing as when fans chanted "wife beater" to Jason Kidd. Thats freakin pathetic. I hope the basketball God or the real God do something to fix that.
That being said, Go Fisher, Go Lakers. Lets end the series in the same type of game that the Lakers won at the end of the regular season when we had no Pau, Kobe did a 360 pass to Lamar and Kobe started cursing out the jerk Jazz fans.

I see the Lakers are using the Code of Silence on Bynum. Why do I think that is bad news? After all this time please don't tell me he will need surgery to get a clue on what is wrong with the knee. Does anybody know when that 3 week period is up?
I expect to see Ariza tonight.
Go Lakers and you better win, the wife is pissed I am recording on both channels tonight and I am sending her to the room to watch TV. LOL

Kwame's key to the game:
-A dominating Pau (since I can't be there)
-Kobe the facilitator
-Sasha the "well oiled" machine not the contraption we witnessed nin game 5
-Drive Lamar, Drive!
-Clogg the lane
-a celebration cake after the win
"Let me eat cake" (or at least throw it)

What I'm looking at tonight is how effective are Pau and LO going to be. Besides Kobe divebombing into the paint, those two can be the most effective at breaking down the defense. Utah loves to help and the key will be finding who is open with AK, Okur or Boozer are rotating over. The best example of this was Game 1 against Denver when Pau was getting all those wide-open lay-ups and dunks.
One key to that will be the spacing. For some reason, Utah disrupts the passing lanes a lot more effectively at home, leading to a lot of turnovers and runouts. Pau needs to protect the ball if he's going to put it on the floor. And Kobe, LO, Farmar etc are going to have to be careful if they drive to the hoop and end up having to bail out.
The x-factor tonight will be Utah's shooting percentage. If their jumpshots are falling then it'll be a long night.

AK,
Superb analysis. Right on the money with the prediction of a win, too. In fact, you hardly left us anything to blog about. LOL. But in the interests of game day, we’ll try anyway. After all, we only have another 9 wins to go before the curtain comes down.
HOME COOKING. While Kobe is the most polarizing player in the NBA, the Lakers by themselves are the most polarizing team. Ask any Suns, Kings, Spurs, or Jazz fan and they hate (and envy) the Lakers like Boston hates (and envies) the Yankees. Half of the world (the good half) thinks the refs are allowing the Jazz to do whatever they like to the Lakers while the other half (the bad half) think that Kobe and the Lakers are receiving favorable treatment from the zebras. And because it’s the Lakers, everyone has a take. My take is that the refs will let them play tonight but the Lakers will just be relentless in taking the ball to the hoop for another big advantage at the free throw line.
THE FISHER FACTOR. Amazing how Smush’s replacement has become such a key factor in the Lakers playoff fortunes. Or is it? While not defending Jordan’s shaky play on defense, team defense is really the only way to really keep Williams or any other great NBA penetrator out of the paint. Even though Fish has done a fabulous job of harassing
Williams and keeping him off guard, we need strong team defense to help Farmar when he fills in for Fish. I think Jordan will be strongly motivated tonight and more aggressive on defense as well as taking the ball to the hoop on offense to pressure Williams.
VLADIMIR RADMANOVIC. One thing for sure is that we need either Vlade or Sasha to be hitting 3’s to have a chance to win the game tonight. If neither is hot, look for a game 7. If both are hot, it will be a blowout by halftime. Personally and statistically, you have to put your money on Sasha tonight rather than Vlade. I don’t see Sasha going cold for 2 games in a row. He will have shot a thousand jumpers just getting ready for this game. As for Vlade, he needs to hit at least a couple of 3’s to stay in the starting lineup.
KOBE’S BACK OR KOBE IS BACK. Kobe’s back is fine which means Kobe is back. Unless Matt Harpring pulls a Robert Horry on him, that is. LOL. I always thought that Matt Harpring was really Austin Crochere, who sounds like Kyle Korver looks like. Kobe is going to be much more aggressive early and late in this game. I look for the kind of performance that he had a couple of years ago after AK47 got a lot of pub about being the new Kobe-Stopper. You know, 40 points, 10 boards, and 10 assists.
THE UNKNOWN. Trevor Ariza on Kyle Korver late in the game would be candidate for the unknown. Korver has killed the Lakers by hitting wide open jumpers or drawing fouls fighting for position down low against Luke. Time to put our defensive stud to work making sure Korver is a non-factor.
THE PREDICTION. Put me on the AK-We-Win-The-Series-Tonight Bandwagon. Lakers 125-104 win takes series 4-2.
Tom

Of course it's different. No one is allowed to bring a balloon woman in Denver...Utah? Not so much.
I like them keys...I think they're huge. But perhaps overlooked is what Lamar Odom brings. In my recollection...outside of those big shots in game 4...LO hasn't played as well in Utah as he did in LA. Foul trouble too. So I'm looking for him to exploit his inner Magic/James Worthy tonight.
Go Lakers!

Hello Laker Nation and Brothers K. Have been late getting to the blog tonight. I know my posting here is really not about the this particular blog title but I'm in a hurry so here it is:
Good Evening LAKER NATION and The Brothers K! Been away from blog all day (gosh, you mean we're supposed work on Laker Game Days??? lol) Wanted to read up on the blog and didn't see too many trolls on this one but I guess when L.A. wins and Kobe helps greatly by staying within the game play of facilitator.
Oh, and a special nod to MAMBA for throwing this rookie on the Roll Call and his poem which really was creative and enjoyed..
To: Banner Holder: Amen!!! Keep it up. Nice blog to regarding the prayers. I like that you do them. And I like that you pray for everyone whether friend or foe, real or percieved. I'm appreciative and hope you keep them up. And, like you wrote, it wouldn't bother me if other fans from different religions than Christianity wrote prayers in this blog, as long as they're not hateful, demeaning,, etc....
Also big ups to all the poet makers on this blog... some creative and entertaining stuff!
TO LAKER NATION:
WE HAVE GOT TO GET THIS ONE TONIGHT!!! So in an unusual and plagaristic move on my part I am going to re-write the Ramones lyrics to their classic punk song "Beat on the Brat."
