The afternoon after
First, the big off-court news: Andrew Bynum will get another opinion on his knee - this would be the third (at least that we know about), after the Lakers team surgeon and Dr. David Altcheck, who had treated Bynum when he was still a high schooler in New Jersey. This time, he's back on an eastbound plane to see Dr. Steven Getcha. The visit will come Wednesday in Princeton, NJ. The problem, as it was described to me, was continued "pain and discomfort." We'll try to find more about the situation (not much was given away at practice), and certainly after he's examined, there will be more information, but my guess is that Camp Bynum is trying to figure out where to go from here, and see if there's something they should be trying that they're not. Just a guess, though.
OK, now on to the practice scene. First of all, the Lakers continue to get a lot more popular. The size of the media throng is growing like one of those weird Katamari balls. It's sort of kill or be killed in there, which you'll see manifested in the angle at which I shot the Kobe video today. I happened to be standing in the right spot when Kobe came out of the locker room, and suddenly found myself inside the biggest scrum I'd seen since I quit playing rugby. As a result, I'm shooting from about a foot away on a guy who is about eight inches taller than I am.
For those of you whose love of 24 extends to what might be inside his nose, well, today is your lucky day!
Most of the talk was centered on the physicality of Utah, and L.A.'s lack of success on the boards. The first is something the Lakers need to get used to, the latter being something they need to mitigate. "They play a very physical game," Phil Jackson said, "and they play well under those circumstances. They get into the lane and are after the ball, pushing and grabbing and getting after the basketball."
On the rebounding, where Pau Gasol said the Lakers might have been a little slow to react, and Kobe Bryant thought it had something to do with "two hands in the back," Jackson thought the Lakers needed to be more active. "I thought a lot of it was reaction. Some of our guys didn't position themselves well inside to give themselves enough space to counter the pressure, and when people contest rebounds you're going to get a lot of balls that bounce out of hands and can come loose. That's what happened yesterday," he said. "Everybody's going to have to (do better). Team rebounding. We just have to be more resilient."
Kobe thought they did a good job, having come off a week of rest. (I tend to agree - I'm not of the belief that there are a whole lot of "bad victories" against 54-win teams in the second round of the playoffs. Were they perfect? No, but they were still pretty good.) "Utah is a much bigger challenge for us on both ends of the floor than our first-round opponent, but still in all we have a lot of confidence in ourselves because we believe that we can execute, we can make adjustments, we can retain information," he said. "We're playing well in spurts, but we haven't put together a complete game. I think it's good news. We want to play our best basketball as the playoffs go on. That's our mind-set. We want our team to get better, we don't want to just stay at this level."
A series against the Jazz, who are light years ahead of the Nuggets from a discipline standpoint, will go a long way to helping that happen. They don't do a team any favors. "They're going to take a good shot every time. Even if they're down 17 or 19 points, they're going to take a good shot, which makes it a lot harder to stretch the game out. A lot of times, teams get desperate and take a desperation three and it's a 15-, 16-point game, then all of a sudden we're back at you at the other end of the floor and will push it up to 20," he said. "They seem to stay disciplined all the time, which puts a lot of pressure on us to not foul, not put them at the free-throw line and get easy points, which is what they were able to do yesterday and it kept them in the game."
As for Utah's WWE style of play, it doesn't bother Kobe, or his teammates. "It doesn't matter to us. We ain't no punks. If they want to play ugly, we can play ugly. If they want to play finesse, we can play finesse. Doesn't matter."
Other notes:
- Nice to see Trevor Ariza running at what seems like full speed, moving up and down the court with (who else?) Coby Karl. Still no contact allowed for Ariza, but any sort of activity is encouraging.
- Long after the players had left the court, Sasha Vujacic was still on the floor shooting, working his way around the arc with triple after triple. There's a reason he's improved so much this season.
- Luke Walton (upper respiratory problem) is expected to play Wednesday night. Just in case anyone was worried ...
- Ran into Devin Green, who stopped by practice, and talked with him for a few minutes. He finished up last season in Italy and was pretty pleased with how things went. I didn't get all that deep into whether or not he thought it was the right career move, but hopefully things will work out for him. It would be nice to see him on a roster next year.
- Good line: Asked what it was like to play against Jerry Sloan, Jackson smiled: "I forgot. I have amnesia."

Ok. I'm satisfied with this development. We need answers on the Bynum front and maybe this doctor visit will give us some.
If he needs to shut it down then I'm all for it. But if he can play, even if it's with pain, then I want him on the floor. If the doctor finds that his pain is a natural discomfort that comes with the healing process and there isn't any chance of further exasperating the injury by playing, then I want him on the floor.
But what do I know? I'm just a crazy fan who sees this team with a 7 foot rebounding/shot blocking machine holding down the defensive front all the way to a big shinny championship.
And Weatherman, passions are running high for everyone. Don't let the b@$+@r&$ get you down. Keep on rockin' and writin' buddy.

Let's hope this third opinion doesn't come back with the dreaded "surgery" word which wouldn't be a stretch considering that's usually what comes after a player complains of continued "pain and discomfort".

Part of me wants to blame Bynum for maybe not working as hard as he could have, but I think I am ready to blame Vitti. His past success seems to have bred an arrogance and complacency. I guarantee that Dallas or Phoenix doctors would have done something more innovative. Does Vitti think he has a job as long as he knows how to wrap an ankle? Can his ass!!

Just got the news about Drew, but didn't see any actual date. I don't understand the "Lakers Report" the LA Times does sometimes -- I mean, how hard is it to ask when Andew is seeing this doctor? even if there is no time table, the report can say that, instead of missing a critical point.

I feel for Andrew.
20 yrs old. Was the starting center. Team at 2nd round. Might be headed for a ring.
And he's not playing. Kinda like Kareem sitting out his freshman year at UCLA when they won the NCAA. Talk about getting the benefit of KAJ's experience. Nobody else can tell Drew how that feels.

I'm a bit considered about our guy Bynum. I think he genuinely felt that he could play, but for some reason he's not able to. I am confused about this pain aspect. Having the same reported injury as Bynum, pain wasnt the concern I had running around again. It was just the fear of the instability of the knee. This pain thing is really confusing. He probably has a lot of scar tissue built up, but something tells me theres more to it.
Also, on a different note, I think the Hornets are punks. Tyson Chandler and David West may be great human beings, but all they do is complain on the court about every foul called on them.
Posted by: The Lake Show | May 05, 2008 at 08:38 PM
Looking at my pre-playoffs predictions that the Lakers, F'-ing Celtics, and Pistons would sweep their way to their conference finals, it looks like the Lakers are making a possible 1 for 3. Only good if I'm shooting three-pointers or hitting cleanup.
However, I still think the Lakers can sweep Utah. It won't be nearly as easy as Denver. But definitely possible. Especially since the Lakers are one of only four teams to crack the Jazz on their floor.
Tough, but doable. Plus, Kobe would like to avenge those six (not four) air-balls he shot in Utah11 years ago. Somehow, that story has made it all around the internet incorrectly (including here on this blog). Kobe, in the middle of those missed jumpers also air-balled a pair of free throws.
I know he will at least try to sweep them away to let the rest of the league know that the Lakers have arrived. Plus, we gotta start sowing those seeds of doubt in the hearts of those Feltics!

I agree, there's something else going on in that knee. Not sure mow many MRIs he's had on it, but maybe it's time to do another one and re-examine. If it surgery, then it needs to get done immediately.

IT’S EASY TO SHOOT 23 FREE THROWS…
But what is not easy is taking the ball to the hoop aggressively over and over to draw the fouls that earned those 23 free throws and fouled out the Jazz top player Carlos Boozer. Anybody who has really played the game knows the superhuman level of energy it takes to do what Kobe did on Sunday. It is so easy when you have NBA talent to just pull up and take that easy jumper, especially when you’re beaten and battered late in the game. Kobe’s performance was a combination of smart gamesmanship and uncompromising competitiveness. It was an MVP and championship worthy performance by Kobe.
TALK ABOUT AN NBA TEAM PEAKING…
What about every player on the team’s entire roster peaking! Phil Jackson has a great reputation for having his teams peak as they enter the playoffs but the job he has done with this Lakers team is ridiculous. Let’s count the Lakers players that are playing the best basketball of their careers right now: Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Derek Fisher, Jordan Farmar, Sasha Vujacic, Ronny Turiaf, Luke Walton, Andrew Bynum, Trevor Ariza, CJ Mbenga, and Coby Karl. That is 12 players career peaking right now. That is why there are several role players coming up big every game for the Lakers.
THE BEST OF TIMES TO BE A LAKERS FAN…
But you wouldn’t know it reading some of the comments by posters on the Lakers Blog. I would have thought that the perfect storm of good fortune that God has thrown the Lakers way this past season plus our glorious history as a championship franchise would have permanently frozen gleeful smiles on the faces of every Lakers fan in the world. Friends, let me let you in on a secret. Now is the time to smile and enjoy our Lakers.
We have the best and most valuable player and the deepest, youngest, and most talented team in the league. We are favored to win our 15th championship even with Bynum and are on the verge of launching another Lakers dynasty. Oh, and God is a Lakers fan.

Everyone needs to stop putting the blame on different people over the Bynum injury. The kids hurt, plain and simple. I don't think anything could be done differently to bring him back sooner. The only thing the Lakers have done wrong is pull our leg the whole time. The reason we are all mad is because they just now came out and told us he's done for the year. If they would have done that after a few weeks there would be no problem. It doesn't look like we need him now anyways. We got the MVP to carry us to the promise land this year and we will only get stronget with Bynum next year.

In the article on Bynum linked from the Lakers website he says everything he does is about basketball. i wonder if that is frat party spin damage.
Delicious is correct about Vitti. Hey, if a player is not producing he gets benched. This guy is not getting the job done. Still its a wonder that more people don't get inspired by Kobe to play through the pain.
Lets cross our fingers on Bynum. He'd be very helpful around this time of year.

The speculation (and the not knowing) about Andrew is really frustrating from a fan point of view. I have more trust in the lakers doctors and training staff than some on this blog... and it might well be that Andrew just hasn't found a way to work through the pain and swelling, in order to get to place where he can play. I kind of doubt that there's any undiscovered structural damage by this point in time - at least I truly hope not. At any rate, he has the time to get his knee (and his head) right... and I'm sure he will.

When Bynum was first injured I EXPECTED him to return in 8-10 weeks. Then I HOPED he would return shortly before or during the first round. Now with all the reported setbacks, I KNOW he won't be back. We'll see him next year. Matter of fact I PREDICT he won't be back.

Unfortunately, there are (as I understand) limits to what an MRI can see, and sometimes surgery (or at very least a peek inside) is necessary to find out what's going on. Some sort of procedure is certainly a possibility.

Cool Hair,
Oden and Bynum....this year, the story of disabled Centers so you expect them to be the headlines next year when they could not even pass this year. This is a cruel league, if you are not playing in spring for the O'Brien trophy, then you can't claim anything. it is not a only test of ability but also durability. Oden has not played a single game as a professional, he's a tall rookie. I am not blaming them for their injuries but of the dynamics and also luck.

I have seen this list and others close to it but I have to respectfully disagree.
Jordan Farmar has not stepped up but has not hurt but definetely not peaking, neither is Trevor Ariza who has yet to play and Coby Karl who has what about 3-4 minutes of play off time. No not peaking. I have seen Ira Newbles name on another list and he is not playing let alone peaking.
We ars definetly playing well but all players are not peaking but thank God some step up at right time.
As long as someone or several players step up each game we will continue to win.

Lake Show, HmrHed:
I've been convinced all along that there is something going on with 'the knee,' and as Lake Show, I've had the same injury, which is what makes me certain that surgery should really be considered more seriously. Apparently, there's a divide in this particular medical field about whether surgery is necessary after the first dislocation/subluxation of your patella; some doctors say surgery is sometimes the only way to repair those stretched ligaments tenuously holding your kneecap in socket properly (i.e. it's just going to keep happening and getting worse), while others say that surgery should be a last resort for this injury (i.e. training will allow a full recovery).
Personally, I opted not to have the surgery and I've regretted it now that I'm in law school and don't have the time (yes, even in the summers) to have the surgery and recovery time off from school or summer jobs. So, I'm stuck with an unstable knee that has a tendency to allow my patella to swing out of it's groove anytime I slip the slightest bit. This was a basketball injury; one of the sickest ever - I twisted in the air with one leg planted on the ground so my kneecap got stuck on the outside of my leg until I landed on the ground, sat up, and straightened my leg so that the kneecap could slam back into place (that's what causes the bone bruise).
Luckily, Drew's dislocation/subluxation didn't appear as severe and, let's face it, I'm sure he has much better attention being paid to his recovery than I did.
Third opinions are good. In fact, it might actually be good news in the long run if this one says he should consider surgery. That's my two cents.
Posted by: That Guy | May 05, 2008 at 11:30 PM
I honestly think that Bynum has pain from scar tissue. He's probably fully healed but the discomfort probably means it's from scar tissue. I'm not a doctor but talking from experience he'll probably have that forever unless he gets surgery to remove scar tissue in the future. I'm just guessing. I haven't seen any x-rays or anything like that. It's not swelling. He didn't get anything torn off but when he started working out crazy a few months ago may have done the scarring. So if he comes back he'll still have that discomfort after a few minutes on the floor... Then he'll have to sit out a few days because his scar is going probably tear and other complications might occur. He might come for a day but he'll sit out the remaing playoffs because of the pain. I hope that I'm wrong about this. It was a flip of the dice. The Lakers wanted Bynum to come back too quickly and play at the same level. He was never going to play at the same level this season. They might have rushed him and now they will probably regret that decision. I hope I'm wrong...OR HE MAY JUST HAVE TO GET USED TO PLAYING WITH PAIN... FOR A FEW WEEKS... I'm no doctor either so I'm PROBABLY WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING and I'm not Bynum either.

Does anybody know if the Lakers are interested in Kenny George who plays the center position For UNCA Bulldogs. This guy is 7'8. He's the tallest basketball player in the USA. Is a guy who's this tall due to a pituitary condition a risk? I read that he has a 102 inch wingspan. Just saw him on youtube. Why is he still in college? If Drew was taken right out of High School why wasn't this guy?
Posted by: johnny | May 06, 2008 at 12:37 AM
This is how I see it:
The Lakers management is not allowing Bynum to play on purpose in order to reduce his stock value and therefore be able to sign him to a smaller than MAX contract. I feel that the front office thinks that the team constructed as is is good enough for this championship run. If Bynum were to play in the playoffs and dominate -- other teams would be willing to pay top dollar and I think the Lakers management is trying to "scare" off other potential bidders that would make it harder for the Lakers to match offers.
Anyways, man Hornets are killing the Spurs -- which means that after we defeat the Jazz we can go kill the Hornets. Personally, I still think the Lakers are too big for the Hornets.
GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BK,
Early MRI scans had a resolution of about 1 mm. Newer have gotten a little below 1 mm. That means two distinct objects can be differentiated from each other if they are 1mm apart or more.
Because MRI establishes a magnetic field and then captures they way hydrogen cations (protons) behave in that magnetic field, different tissues and fluids can be distinguished. The problem should lie in fluids or tissues that can't be distinguished yet are different from what is expected or healthy. There could also be microscale damage below the resolution of the MRI, like many extremely small tears (similar to what I've read occurs with "tennis elbow").
I'm far from being an expert on magnetic resonance imaging, but I have studied it a bit in my neuroscience coursework. I'm much more familiar with MRIs of brain and nervous system tissue than I am of hinge joints like the knee.
Let's hope things turn out well for Socks. All of these medical activities give us a much higher chance of getting him more cheaply, but unfortunately, that comes with a risk that his knee may be a serious liability. We could definitely use him next year when he try to get 73 wins and sweep the playoffs.

I think the spurs will get back in this series but either way the real test of the hornets will be when they play a tight series...maybe Byron scott makes all the difference and if they really are just that much better than the teams they are playing then it makes no difference... but sooner or later they'll have a must win game and they are still untested in such circumstances....Im still going with the spurs.

If history is repetitive, Kobe will probably get about 5 foul shots tonight. Every time he gets the benefit, that's all that is talked about. How about utah committing all the fouls?? I hope Pau and Odom are ready to step up because Kobe is going to get slammed and probably pick up a technical foul tonight.

Edwin,
LakerTom wasn't saying that Karl is better than Vlad; the post was about the thought that almost the entire squad is playing the best ball of their individual careers. Which is a testament to the jobs the coaching staff and the players have done.
