Still no "L"

May 5, 2008 |  9:18 am

Pau_block Most folks figured one team would still be undefeated during the second round of the playoffs.  More specifically, that team featuring a big three, green and a cigar lit from the after world.  Instead, that perfect squad would be the Lakers of Los Angeles, sporting a most recent 109-98 triumph over the Jazz to kick off Round 2.  Having swept the Nuggets, the Lakers had a loooonnnng time to hear about how physical Utah's style would be.  Little time elapsed before it became perfectly clear that wasn't all hype and idle chatter.  Between some rust on display by the home team and Utah's willingness to mix it up (which in part led to Kobe taking a franchise playoff high 23 trips to the line with 21 made), this wasn't a contest chock full of free flowing, pretty roundball.  Moreover, that physical nature also resulted in Utah absolutely crushing the Lakers on the glass, a 58-41 margin that would be troubling if it marks the start of any trend.

But lest anybody takes these details and concludes the Lakers were outplayed and got lucky, think again.

Any damage from the Lakers' sluggish start was kept in check by a razor-sharp Kobe Bryant, whose 15 points carried his squad through the first quarter.  From there, Utah's mostly single-coverage defense of Kobe remained mostly ineffective as Kobe's mates eventually found their groove. Or in the case ofSasha_on_korver Sasha Vujacic, simply entered the game, as Slovenia's Favorite Son needed zero time whatsoever to start decorating the box score.  Vlad Radmanovic displayed some recently absent touch during the second half, and Pau Gasol's often tough sledding was concluded with a flurry of buckets. And even when the Lakers weren't playing their prettiest ball, they maintained some solid defense, whether you're talking about Derek Fisher's defense on Jazz motor Deron Williams (a lockdown effort that's making the young PG play the self-blame game) or the 11 steals and octet of swatted shots.

As even the typically cynical point out, there may not have been everything to like about the game, but even less to hate.  Moreover, the victory revealed the positive aspects of this team's character.

Kareem compares the political climates of the 1968 Olympics and the games about to go down in China.

The K's getting hit by the paparazzi (sort of)!

GO LAKERS!

Good Morning Fam!

Hey did anyone else notice the Boston crowd chanting "USA, USA" while Pachulia was shooting free throws during the end of the third quarter?

Darock and I seem to be the only ones who thought that chant was being said.

Here is a little sample of the classy writing over at the Jazz blog...............

"How good is Kobe

I wanted to write a love to note to Kobe after game one because he is the most awesome player to ever put a basketball jersey on. His game one highlights include badly missing 3 shots in a row in the fourth quarter when the Jazz were finally playing as a real team and not turning the ball over every other possession like they did in the first half. He also was able to get the foul line at will by screaming like a little bitch if any Jazz player even looked at him wrong. I am sure that all of you Laker fans will try and tell me that Kobe deserved to go the line 23 times and if you do, you give up your right to ever call another fan from another team a homer. 50% of the fouls called on Kobe are complete crap as it was with MJ, Magic, Bird, Malone and any other superstar. Lets see here, the Jazz shoot 30 free throws as a team and the Lakers shoot 46, that seems like calls were fair both ways. (I do agree with Phil Jackson however that the officiating was a little wishy-washy at best, but it is not why the Jazz lost the game.) Back to Kobe, he played great defense on our worst offensive player all night holding Ronnie Brewer to 11 points. All in all he was just awesome, in fact I would dare say that he was the best player on the floor yesterday, something I am sure that none of us irrational fans were expecting. Last thing about Kobe, he actually made it all the way through game one without raping a girl, good for you Kobe we all knew you could do it."

Stay classy Salt Lake, stay classy.............

We swept the Jazz? Before the series even started? Are you trying to jinx us?

The Lakers swept Denver, not Utah.

They will not sweep Utah.

Good Morning Mamba24! Hope all is well with you, we're looking forward to your return!

Good Morning Charles and all of Laker Nation!

Another win, albeit not the prettiest, but a win indeed. We need to hit the glass harder next game, but winning despite losing on the boards does show the strength and versatility of this team. I agree with Jon K that the Ja$$ can't play much better, but we know the Lakers can step it up a notch!

11 TO 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LET'S GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Having swept the Jazz, the Lakers had a loooonnnng time to hear about how physical Utah's style would be"

i think you mean Nuggets! :)

None of the experts mention an obvious reason the Jazz win at home and not on the road.

Their style challenges officials to define the game. The pull downs and elbows in the chest don't replay as well on the Staples screen as they will in Utah.

11 wins to go
Swwweeeep, 3 FO' FO'

I had my TV on "First Take" and overheard scumbag Skip Bayless negatively commenting on Kobe, per usual. Does this guy have a "I hate Kobe" sticker on his forehead or what???

I mean, geesh, you can see the disdain in his face whenever he has to speak on the Lakers but more so, Kobe..

it has happened. and it is undeniable. With Celtics collapsing in Atlanta, Kobe winning MVP, and the Lakers holding the only perfect playoff record, the Lakers have officially become Top DAWG.

Thanks justa!

never,

Is there a story behind the chants? International competition?

Also, did you guys catch the vicious screen where KG laid Zaza on his back?

Guess he was trying to show why he was the DPOY.

I'm not very impressed with Boston's performances down in the ATL.

Will be interested to see how the Cavs handle the Big 3 (gag)..

Just a quick note to any and all Jazz responses like the one above:

SCOREBOARD!

This team is so fun to watch.

Ronny's block of Deron Williams' dunk attempt was NASTY!

Quietly, the Lakers are becoming a consistent defensive team.

2 close playoff games, 2 victories. A very good sign.

J. Walter Weatherman,

I was just getting caught with the weekend threads. Don't leave man. You have contributed a lot of great posts to the blog. Please get my email from the K bros and I will be happy to send you an email. This is a fantastic time to be Laker fan and you have been with us for a while.

Best,

Jazz fans are notoriously lame. Hurling debris onto the court while your team is losing? Nice. Booing the guy that helped get you to the playoffs? Classy. Continuing to perpetuate rumors about Kobe? Great. I'm not sure if any of the Utah fans watched what happened when the Nuggets started trash-talking Kobe... but keep slinging mud if you want. Kobe will respond accordingly.

Go Lakers!

Good morning Laker fam,

Great win for us. Jazz r bullies and they will pay for it. I was plesantly surprise on how Fish checked the kid on D. Sasha is the real 6th man winner. LO now beleives he is a rock star so he will perform like one. GO LAKERS

Skip hates Kobe and Lebron, that is his job for that show to downplay the stars. Its the only way he can earn a living. Just laugh at him.

Boston is OVER-RATED. If that gm7 had been in Atl, they would have lost. I hope the LeBrons can get them in thier series.

WE R THE FREAKIN LAKERS.

Director of Win #8, and I am ready with the game plan for victory.

Stay classy Salt Lake, stay classy.............

A vain request pslakerfan. You should hear the local sports talk this morning. It is ALL about how lousy the officiating is and how there is no way Kobe could shoot 23 freebies with good reffing. This was all the refs fault. It had nothing to do with their best two players not showing up even though one of them already took responsibility for the loss. I actually respect the Jazz franchise for the most part. But Jazz fans are the most annoying people I have ever met. (Well, maybe next to BYU fans... Go Utes!)

Oh, and I was lucky enough to get tickets for game 3!!!

Jon K,

Excellent post from the earlier thread! Great point about the Lakers being rusty and still won. Have spoken to you in a while man.

Hope all is good.

Mel,

Yeah I don't see the international competition. I just saw Boston needing 7 games to close out the hawks.

Jazz fans are the last ones that should be complaining about the refs. Anyone remember John Stockton's trick of falling down, untouched, in the vicinity of an opposing player to get a foul? Boozer had about 12 fouls in this first game, the most noticeable one being when he drove to the basket and pushed Gasol down with his off arm. The refs called the foul... on Gasol. I have no issue with fouls being missed, but when the fouler becomes the foulee? Not good, people.

"Good Morning Lakers Nation"

It is a good day to be a Lakers Fan!

Morning fam.

Three more and Utah is done. This young Jazz team isn't ready for the Lakers. Not this year, not now, it's ours and you can feel it.

AK/BK

Could one of you guys read that post in Farsi at 9:35 to be sure it wasn't off color or something?

Can't wait for Wednesday. PJ is a master of playoff adjustments.

Go Lake Show!

JWW

Like Charles, I also would like to encourage you to stick around during the most exciting time for all of us Laker Fans in some years. You can still find the content and serious exchange you desire here, and your posts have been a definite contribution to the content here which would be missed if you leave.

@lakersrydeordie

I think you'll notice that Skip Bayless hates all people, so it's no surprise that Kobe would be included. Seriously, has there ever been anybody that gets more offended than him. He's completely worthless.

@never
Yeah, Boston was chanting "USA, USA" at Zaza Pachulia. I wonder how Simmons will support that.

Last post on the topic of posters:

I think this is an appropriate forum to use the words of famous Angelino Rodney King: "Can't we all just get along?"

Seriously, Mamba and Weatherman were probably the first two people to welcome me to this blog community and I think it's ridonculous that either one should feel unwelcome or attacked.

So, brothers, come back, do your thing and forgive one another. Not only is there room for everyone here, there are two very conspicuously empty chairs.

Also, how 'bout them Lakers!?!

justanothabrotha,

Thanks for the roll call.

Saltlaker

Keep those reports coming. Great stuff.

We actually pulled the Farsi comment, not because we don't enjoy a good comment in Farsi, but because we have absolutely no idea what it said.

BK

bmurph, about Bayless, you are right..I listened as Greg Anthony was becoming increasingly annoyed with Skip's comments/statements -- Bottom line, I don't think Skip ever played ANY game so Bayless is pretty much Worthless! I can't stand him tho, he is wack!

JWW and Mamba24,

There is no need to take time off forever. These are the playoffs, we may agree to disagree on so many things but there is no reason to go AWOL on the best season of the year.

Whatever have been said, those are merely viewpoints, let it go and go back being fans.

Bynum,

We needed you last night. Where were you? Were you even in the building?

Ths was going to be our 'training' year where Bynum learned about playoff presure and what not. If Bynum doesn't play this year that makes next year our learning curve year. This is why Bynum HAS to come back this year. We ned him to get a full playoff run under his belt. How else can we know if we can depend on him?

Any news on the Bynum front? And can we have him visit a doctor in Los Angeles, not get on a 5 hour plane ride that he knows is going to make his knee swell up? That was the stupidist thing I ever heard of. See a doctor across the country after a trip that will gaurentt to make your knee swell. Does this kid even want to come back?

He, not his knee, is not looking good to me.

Wes

I'm sorry, I should've phrased that better.

Was there an incident in an international competition that I don't know about? Bad blood from worlds or the Olympics?

Either the Boston fans are more knowledgeable (I don't even know where Zaza's from) than me or they're just crass.

Hmmm....tough one. lol.

Thanks for confirmation Bmurph. Stay classy Celtics fans.

The Outlaw,

Speaking of adjustments, Sloan will tighten the knot further and take advantage of the physical game edge in the 3rd Q wherein the lead was trimmed down from 19 to just 4 pts. They will study the match ups. PJ should put the big men out there like DJ Mbenga take those defensive rebounds. Boozer and Harping will be enforcers in the 2nd game, this will be a rough game, not really clothlining like what Marvin Williams did to Rondo but more pulling of jerseys, blocking bodies without the referee's watch. They will annoy Kobe, Pau and LO lose their tempers and get into technical, exploiting chances to get an edge. Their objective is to steal a game so they have to take out Mr. MVP from the mix.

Great win by the Lakers. Jazz fans can complain all they want. For every foul they complain about, there are 2 the Jazz are committing when the ref isn't looking on purpose. IMHO, they are far worse than any Kings fans. They are the most myopic fan base in the NBA.

The key for game 2 are for the Lakers to make sure we get those long arms out into the passing lanes, and keep your heads on a swivel. Good cuts and some of the best screens come out of Jerry Sloan's system, and that hasn't changed. I think Pau, Lamar, Ariza, and Kobe can have a field day just getting their hands into the passing lanes.

Our rebounding sucked, but the flip side of that is the Jazz's woeful shooting (gotta miss shots to get offensive rebounds). Long rebounds we're also the norm yesterday, so while I did see Gasol and Odom under the basket, the key was perimeter players to make more of an impact.

The Lakers definitely need to have their stuff together to keep beating this team, but I think Phil and the team are fully aware of the deficiencies. The good thing is that we won despite rust and what I thought was a bad game by Pau (midrange not falling, finished too soft around the basket, expectation of foul calls).

Wes - I share your Bynum frustration. Yes, he was in the building last night but he was sitting behind the bench instead of where he should've been. On it.

F the Celtics!

--Fearless

It was probably a roll call from Iran.

Wes,

We have seen so many Laker games, so many injuries and too many posts were sid on Bynum's situation. We even had heated arguments with fellow fans on his current condition.

I guess we have to leave the issue as it is. If he can play, then play, if not just go with the players we got. It is not good to hostage a team's effort due to a missing player. i have argued with AK so many times before that nobody should be indispensable in a team effort. Everyone has their own responsibilities as well as own decision to make. If he's hurt like Mihm, then stay on the sideline at least it would be nicer if he shows up at the bench or on the seat cheering for his teammates.

Edwin,
"Sloan will tighten the knot further and take advantage of the physical game edge in the 3rd Q wherein the lead was trimmed down from 19 to just 4 pts."

I don't know if he can really do that - they had significant problems with players being in foul trouble as it was.

Bynum was there for the whole game sitting behind fisher in a brown suit.
Bynum come back

I smell the disgusting stench of bridge and tunnel dwellers.
Stinky trolls. Go back to the Jazz boards with your petty BS blaming of the refs and everything other than your team. Continue to diminish the efforts of the competition while avoiding the obvious fact that the Jazz were outplayed in a game when both teams competed on virtually the same level.

Back to Jazz land with you. You'll be outplayed in the next game as well.

Random musings while on hold:

1) Great win for a game that was set up for an upset, after 6 days off. The Lakers toughed it out after the mini-run by the Jazz. A good sign.

2) The Jazz have absolutely no one who can even slow down Kobe. He can do anything he wants any time he wants. It's over.

3) D Fish did a fantastic job on Deron Williams. Bodied him up. Didn't let him go where he wanted to go. In his face all game long.

4) Sasha!!!

5) Look for Pau and Lamar to hitch it up and lay some serious board hurt on the Jazz in game 2.

6) Phil, seriously, get some tear-away jerseys on our guys. I want to see the goofy look on Boozer's and Harpring's faces as they fall to the floor holding half a Laker jersey. PS, Phil, you're a completely different coach in the playoffs regarding timeouts, substitutions, etc. 10th ring needs to be placed on order.

I just want to mention two things.

Mehmet Okur is way better than I've seen. He actually got quite a few rebounds and wasn't just the wimpy outside-shooting Euro that I've previously seen. We'll have to watch out for that.

Utah did get away with loads of fouls that weren't called (and the one they called on Gasol). Boozer in particular should have fouled out much earlier. I hope they can remedy this situation because it's just ugly. I hate the move, but I think the Lakers should send a DVD to the league. Someone is going to get hurt and it's just ridiculous to allow so many uncalled fouls by one team.

Bynum is done for the year, hasn't this already been confirmed??? Why all the Bynum chat..Who wouldn't want dude back if he was healthy and able? You question his heart? This guy has heart, that is REDONKOULOUS to question Drew! If the kid could play he would. Any ole wayz, the Lakers have been playing 4 months without him and we will continue to keep our eyez on the prize without him..

Next year, he will reappear and we will be that much better.

Try to find something other than Andrew to harp on..

Dayum already.
