Ooopah!!!

May 8, 2008 |  9:28 am

If Staples Center featured an Ouzo vendor (and if the powers that be thought outside the box a bit, they would), you'd have heard plenty of that chant getting hollered throughout the building on Wednesday.  Twas a night for celebration in the ol' Staples Center shack, decreed underway by Kobe Bryant upon receiving his MVP trophy and hitting another level of "par-tay" with the Lakers' 120-110 win over the Jazz
Ocadm8hfgca6k4lymcah68uo5ca74hv4xca
In the case of the latter event, the home squad ensured a celebratory vibe by riding out whatever was thrown their way.  With the benefit of a geeked crowd in his pocket, Kobe was met with a wide variety of defenders assigned to shadow.  And while Matt Harpring was the most relatively effective, 34 points on 11-18 shooting reflects nobody really stopping The Mamba.  They weathered a huge second half from Deron Williams, one that could have been more effective had D.Will's rocky opening not have helped keep the Jazz permanently out of sync.  In particular, Carlos Boozer found the sledding tough, mostly dividing his time between taste testing Gatorade flavors on the bench and struggling to stroke nylon.   But at least he found some company from his mates in the latter struggle.  The Jazz entered a boatload of FGA's into the box score, but didn't find nearly the same numbers when it came to actual makes (45).

Not that Utah's misses prevented them from ever making a run.  Quite the opposite, in fact.  But the numerous pushes all shared one commonality: None ever really placed the Lakers in, as "Ocean's 11" fans refer to it, "Barney Rubble" (or "trouble," for the non-movie goers).   Thwarting those efforts began with the tone set by Kobe and the super smart Derek Fisher, both steeped in successful playoff "been there, done that" (and the latter perhaps in the unsung hero in the Lakers' unexpectedly sweet season).  Sasha Vujacic, Lamar Odom (especially gung ho and hitting the boards like a madman) and Pau Gasol all brought their basket prowess to the proceedings, doing their part to create an absurd 57% clip from the field.  Whatever the Jazz brought was eventually answered twofold or greater, providing plausible reason Kobe feels an urge to avoid making vacation plans for early June.

Playing late into that month would be the perfect capper to what can be described as a magical season for the Lakers.  What's not to like?  The vibe permeating throughout a happy locker room.  Pau Gasol's arrival bringing about Bowie-esque ch-ch-changes.  The back story surrounding Kobe's eventual trophy triumph, one that involves a player once famous for keeping teammates at a purposeful distance, now a believer in creating roster bonds that never break (unless bread is involved, of course).  Exhibiting trust towards teammates that blossoms into production beyond anybody's imagination.  And as an added bonus, the good fortune all jives with David Stern's master plan.

Laker Land's only current bummer?  News that Andrew Bynum may need surgery for his troublesome knee.  Approximately another month will go by in waiting, and if there's no significant pain reduction, an exploratory session with the knife may be the next step for answers.

Please, please, please WARN us when you link to a Simers column! I refuse to read his crap, and I don't want to give him unintentional hits. I recognize that you guys have a duty to provide all the Lakers-related stories that are out there, but at least give us a little warning. Can you have a little dunce cap that pops up when you hover the mouse over a link to a Simers column? How about a sound effect of a whining baby? How about a disclaimer that says something like "warning: you are about to link to a column that may induce vomiting, dizziness, and a desire to gnaw your own leg off"??

Help a brother out, here.

Stranger in the Night,

I realize you don't care what we think of your opinions and that the only reason you post her is to get your messages to PJ and Mitch, but would you please stop talking sense? Mitch is going to dump Pau for Kwame, and even though he has skinny legs and big giant man hands, I have a man crush on the handsome Spaniard. I'd hate to lose him.

Mamba,

Please put me on the support Vlad Rad and the Lakers Sweep the Jazz bandwagons. Good Morning Charles.

Greetings Bozz, Pig, Faith,Lakersrydeordie, Toad, Amazing, JustAnother, Hammer, Fatty and the rest of Laker Nation.

I can't believe there is referee talk and it isn't about the mugging Utah put on us. I think Boozer has committed 137 fouls this series. Sheesh. There have been plenty of missed calls, but I don't think the refereeing in anyway has favored us. Perception is everything, but I perceived a lot of missed Jazz fouls. Hmmmn.

I'm just glad that we are not bitching about the calls much. When you keep your mouth shut when the refs flub one, they tend to offset that later in the game, series or whenever. In basketball, the squeaky wheel gets the T's, not the Grease. I'd like to Roll Simers in grease and fry his a$$ up with some troll pudding.

Kobesbaaaad(and he is)

Faith,

Is the celebration over already? Time to get picky?

OK... We shot lights out. Can't count on that in Utah. We got home court calls and got outscored in the paint. They were able to make a run with D Williams reverting to form, playing faster and more aggressive. We didn't match their energy in the 3rd as you said, and still got out rebounded. Friday will be a grind....but

The fact remains, we're too long, and quick for Utah to handle, and we have Kobe doing whatever he wants on the floor. BTW your boy Sasha, is about to get a BIG payday... making him even more attractive! A nurse would be perfect for him.

I saw this post on another blog and had to laugh.
I just wanted to share.

"Let me get this straight...the Jazz have a Brewer AND a Boozer?? What a combo LOL"

What's worse is that they can't really do either while playing in Utah.

Irony and all that.

Lakers

Larry,

Good morning! And good morning, Charles and all.

I'm with Janaya. Put me on all bandwagons of a positive nature.

Hey, how 'bout a Come Back JWW bandwagon? (Not to rub it in, totally irony free...)

Having been there for the '80s, I'm not sure I can say I'm enjoying this more than any other Lakers team, but I'll agree with The Outlaw, this is just almost too much fun to watch.

I do not believe I have ever seen the triangle run better. It's just PERTY! Pau, though he is wispy like a ballerina and lacks strong calves, is the perfect big for this set. It's just gonna be sick when (if?) we get all our bigs on the court together, dropping interior dimes for dunk after dunk after dunk....

KBeat,

I totally agree. I was really perplexed as to why Vlad couldn't make an appearance. It's funny, he doesn't make an appearance and he has an off night, hmm...

-bozz-

If we play New Orleans in the next round (and that "if" is for the possiblity that Spurs might win out, not the other possiblity), I will not be supporting Mr. Scott for that series.

In any other time, my #4 will represent my respect and utter idolization of Byron when in the 80s. But for a LA/NO series, my name will represent my admiration for Luke Walton's resurgence and my support of Phil, Kobe, and Derek's quest for Laker championship #4 together.

In fact, I will start that now. Love ya Byron, but my admiration for you has just officially went into past tense, (at least for now).

LET'S GO LAKERS!!!

SIMERS!!!!

T.J. SIMERS!!!!!

PLEASE SIMERS, I KNOW YOU WILL DO ANYTHING TO GET PEOPLE TO READ YOUR CRAP, BUT THIS IS OVER THE LINE!

"Stern's crew took Utah's best player, CarlosBoozer, out of the game with a pair of first-quarter fouls, and then added another 19 seconds after he returned to start the second quarter. Boozer finished the half with no points, the refs doing the best job of defense on Boozer in the NBA this season."

BOOZER COMMITED THE FOULS SIMERS!!! I GUESS THEY SHOULD HAVE OVER LOOKED AN OVER THE TOP ON GASOL COMPLETE WITH A SLAP ACROSS HIS FACE AND ARMS????

Look at the regular season history for Utah SIMERS!! They LEAD the LEAGUE in FOULS!!

But they are not as NEARLY as FOUL as your BS article!!!

YOU SUCK SIMERS!!! GO WRITE ABOUT THE DODGERS!!

EVEN BETTER, GO TO CHINA AND WHINE ABOUT THE OLYMPICS.

Beyouch Simers...

janaya

Good morning,

Fatty has pretty much said all there needs to be said: Another good day to be a Lakers Fan.

Hopefully, PJ is also listening to Faith. The team needs to tighten up on the D to achieve success on the road.

Meanwhile, I'm just going to wear a big smile all day. Go Lakers!

Mamba24, you are like a cyclone, you are indeed back.

I go with the observations of Compton's Finest. Here's what PJ is doing. He uses Vlad as a starter and Sasha as the Finisher. This is the way he used AC Green and Horry in '01. PJ loves to match players as their assignments like Vlad for AK and Sasha for Koerver.

Mamba24,pPut my name on Vlad/Rad bandwagon as a masseur for the Serbian. While he is downgraded because his rainbow shots are off and on, what is great in his game, he is contributing in small way in rebounds (5) and assists (5). When he is in the post, he adds more to those towering hands the distract Utah's players tenaciousness to grab rebounds. However, we cannot turn a sponge into a hard granite even for two seasons. They learned the finnesse type of basketball in Europe but he's learning on distracting AK that creates T/O's.

For Game 3, Vlad, Sasha and Farmar should produce because it will be a dog fight at Utah and they will be given free shots in the perimeter. Sloan will try to zero-in Kobe, LO, Pau and Fish who are doing damage to Utah's rally.

Brothers and Sisters.

Anybody like to read a semi-lenghty Laker Joke? I would need 3 yes' or amens because I don't want to offend anyone...

Post on a Utah Jazz Blog:

"Utah Sucks! Utah Sucks." That was the sound coming from the Staples Center Crowd with three minutes to go in last nights Game Two loss to the Lakers. A frustrating end to a frustrating game. Similar to Game One, the Jazz played from behind nearly the entire game, only leading 13-12 in the first quarter. The Jazz were out-played and out-hustled by the dominating Lakers.
The Jazz-Homer inside of me wants to complain about the free throw discrepancy. (13-16 for Utah 35-43 for L.A.) I'm not going to though. I could go on a ten minute rant about how easy it was for Kobe and Gasol to get a foul called. (Throw your arms around and scream and chances are you are going to get a whistle.)
I could just as easily go on about how frustrating it is to watch Boozer struggle night in and night out. Are you hurt Boozer? Just in a slump? Or does L.A.'s size intimidate you that much?
When all is said and done, the Lakers are a better team. That's all it is. I want the Jazz to win, I want to think they can come back from a 2 game deficit. In reality, however, the Lakers are the #1 seed for a reason and you cannot argue that. They are bigger, faster and collectively speaking, they seem to want it more.
Don't get me wrong Jazz-fans. I am not selling out. I would not do that. You better believe I will be True-Blue tomorrow night and every night the Jazz play. In fact, I hope I eat my words and a miracle does take place. Hey, like C.B. mentioned to me last night. We were down 0-2 to Houston last year and pulled it off. I'm simply trying to convince myself that it is not a huge upset if the Lakers beat us. They are supposed to. Let's just don't go down easy.

I totally agree. I was really perplexed as to why Vlad couldn't make an appearance. It's funny, he doesn't make an appearance and he has an off night, hmm...

Mamba24,

"Blocked Wilts hook shot 3 times"

Were you referring to the Wilt, the midget? If you're talking about the legend, I could not even reach the top of our door, in order to succed in blocking I have to tickle him. lol!

-VMan, you're absolutely right. This team BELIEEEEEVES. Every single one of them (sometimes Famar believes a little too much, haha). They are all turning into a group of Mini-Mambas out there, and it's fun to watch.

-I'm sick and tired of everyone blaming Denver's ineptitude, or Boozer and Deron's poor play for the Lakers' wins. Screw that! The Lakers have been methodically, physically and mentally picking these teams apart. This is the best defense they've played all year, and that includes the excellent stretch with Bynum.

-The Kobe-supporters have said all along that he just needs a little help, and it will be game over for the rest of the league. The players, GMs and coaches knew this as well. The doubters, the haters, and the media are slowly beginning to catch on.

-Has Kobe ever looked more at peace, more confident, more happy, more cocky, more dangerous?

-What's more impressive for Kobe, taking Kwame, Cook and Smush to the playoffs in the West or winning a ring with this group? That's a close call.

-Boston has been playing in fifth gear throughout the regular season, and they are in the same gear in the postseason. The Lakers, on the other hand, have turned it up another gear. This team cannot be stopped. They know it, and the oppostion knows it.

Simers is such a blowhard. If Carlos Boozer want to make an adjustment to his game it would be to stop pushing off the back of boxed out players grabbing a rebound or loose ball. Until then, Boozer will keep getting called for fouls.

I don't know if anyone has posted this yet or not, but it is hilarious. Scroll down about halfway and click on YouTube video of Vlad.....

"Lakers Sweep Jazz - Bandwagon"

Why is the name LakerTom not included in this bandwagon? He is the Father of Sweeps & Dynasties.

A couple of other things things:

1. Why PJ has 9 rings? Did anyone hear that story about PJ's first year with the Lakers? - - It seems that PJ was yelling at everyone but Kobe -- Shaw (then a player) got sick of it and asked PJ why he wasn't yelling at Kobe. PJ responded that Kobe is an attacking player and he didn't want to thwart that style. PJ is more than an great X and O coach, but a master of personalities. Here’s wishing PJ gets his 10th and puts that Leprechaun in the rear view mirror.

2. I know this is negative -- but I'd like to propose a "SIMERS IS THE KING OF TROLLS" bandwagon.

Edwin Gueco:""Blocked Wilts hook shot 3 times""

Oh sorry you're right Edwin that wasn't 3 times that was 4. LOL!

The Jazz have a rating system on their blog, where they can weed out the comments they don't agree with (like any anti-jazz comments). So I did a little troll intervention and left them this morsel.......
Oh, so we rate what we don't want to hear. You mean when I mention that the Lakers are faster and longer than the Jazz and that is why they seem to be fouling incessantly. What is the rating when you mention that Carlos Boozer shouldn't be allowed into any of the same cities that Karl Malone's ever visited, including SLC. What about when I mention that Deron Williams is definitely no Chris Paul. What about the fact that Kyle Korver is closer to Ashton Kutcher than Jeff Hornacek. What about the fact, that despite the fact I admire his toughness, Jerry Sloan's players wilt in the face of adversity. How do you rate the fact that Denver seemed alot tougher than the Jazz, or the fact that OKUR had his moment and there will be no more. Rate that!

Just having some fun...

Kobesbaaaad(and he is)

One stat really stands out, that makes me worry coming into Utah.
Jazz had 101 FG attempts compared to Lakers 68 FG attempts !!!
We basically had less than 70% of their FG attempts.
If Utah starts making shots in SLC, we'll be in for a long night.

Utah again outrebounded LA, 41-37, but the glaring stat is 16 offensive rebounds for the Jazz. I'm sure PJ and his staff will be focusing on that. Millsap had 6 offensive rebounds. Gasol and Turiaf will have to work extra hard to box out Millsap and Boozer.

In addition to the rebounding edge, Jazz also committed only 10 TOs compared to the Lakers' 15 TOs. Lakers have to take care of the ball better in SLC. One reason for the TOs is that Lakers play at a slightly faster pace than the Jazz.

On the positive side, the third reason for the big disparity in FG attempts is that Lakers had 43 FT attempts to Utah's 16. That means the Jazz were fouling the Lakers instead of letting them get a FG attempt off. Some of this is because as TV commentators have noted the Laker's frontcourt players primarily Odom and Gasol are much quicker than Boozer and Okur, and Kobe continues to dribble penetrate.

Expect Utah to keep fouling the Lakers in SLC since they really have no choice. The problem is the referees can get intimidated by the boorish crowd in SLC, one of the reasons for the Jazz home court NBA best record in the regular season. If the referees get intimidated by the crowd and swallow their whistle in SLC, expect a long night for our Lakers.

From CBSSportsline.com

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller says he won't attend Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals because it's being played on a Sunday.

Miller, a member of the Mormon church, says he won't attend because of religious reasons. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints encourages members to avoid non-religious activities on Sundays.

Miller told the Salt Lake Tribune he probably won't watch the game on TV or listen on radio, but his wife might watch the game and give him updates while he takes a long drive.

The Lakers-Jazz game will be Utah's first Sunday home game since the 2001 playoffs.

(In remembrance and honor of Wilt) Now to the Joke.

Wilt Chamberlain, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Laker flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity, Wilt," said God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here."

Wilt felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a 3-story mansion with a brilliant White, Purple, and Gold sidewalk, a 50 ft. tall flagpole flying an enormous Los Angeles Lakers flag, and in every window a Lakers logo.

Wilt looked at God and said "God, I’m not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question: I helped the Lakers win NBA Championship, Scored 100 points on another team, have been adored by more women than I can remember, and one of the 50 greatest players of all time."

God said "So what do you want to know, Wilt?"

"Well, why does Kobe get a better house reserved than me?"

God chuckled and said "Wilt, that’s not Kobe’s house, ...it’s mine."

Mamba:

Put me on the COME BACK JWW bandwagon as JWW's Personal Scroller..............I've tried to reach out to him 3 times already, maybe if I offer to be his personal scroller he'll return.

One of the good things that Lakers can keep doing in Utah is to turn Deron into a shooter. The best strategy against great pass first, shoot second PGs like Williams, Paul, Nash, etc. is to stop them from setting up their team mates even if it leads to them becoming a scorer. I predict that Deron is going to come out shooting in SLC to continue his momentum from the second half in game 2. I also expect Sloan to draw up some extra plays to get Boozer some shots and get him into the offensive flow.

On the Laker's side, PJ will probably draw up some plays to get screens for Vlad Rad so Vlad can get into the offense. A shooting threat from Vlad will create more space inside for Gasol and Odom and hopefully put Boozer and Okur on foul trouble again.

I hope Ariza will be cleared Friday morning so we can throw him into guarding Deron a few minutes Friday night to give him another defensive look. Fisher can not play as many minutes as the young Williams and Willams just kills Farmar.

We need to get Farmar back into the groove and the key is Turiaf. Rony has not played well in the playoffs yet due to his illness in the Denver series. We need to see some fast paced 2 man games between Jordan and Rony to get them into the flow. Walton has not been as much of a factor in the Utah series compared to the Denver series. Look for Walton to have better games in SLC bec. illness laid him a little low in the first 2 games in LA.

Kobesbad:

See, that's the Ja$$'s problem right there! Every Laker Fan knows that watching the Lakers win another plauoff game is definitely a religious experience!

Whats up Laker Family!

Great win last night and Staples was loud!
Great game by Fish, last game it was Sasha, who will step up tomorrow??

as for Vlad, I was asking where he was the other day myself and found this:
"Vladimir Radmanovic (at a family obligation) was disappointed he had to miss the festivities."
http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=8592

Never Underestimate the Predictability of Stupidity. = T.J. Simers. I could have wrote what he was gonna say last week.

Lets sweep the Jazz!

This is how Kobe sees the Utah Jazz defenders:

http://www.valdostamuseum.org/hamsmith/MatrixCode.gif

Laker in BC,

That's something to watch for. But we were fouled on many of our attempts. Those show up as FTA rather than FGA.

Still something to watch, though.

I'm just glad we're going into their place up 2-0. Watching what's happening around the league with roster and coaching changes in reaction to the Laker's ascension is very rich indeed!

As passionate Laker fans, there will be no moment when we have nothing to say about this team. We always have comments about the game whether a blow out or a close one, After winning 6 in a row, perhaps they deserved praises as a whole. The parts is the summation of the whole. For those fans who were with the blog in the last two years, these past few weeks, WE SAW HEAVEN AT LAST..... for we have been tormented by bad basketball fundamentals, bad PR in uplifting the spirit of the scrubs, we lived with it and we survived. Must we complain if Vlad is a sleeper in one or two games or Farmar a no show as future PG or Bynum and Trevor still not playing ..... we just witnessed the MVP moments last night. This is still a dream come true, if you ask anyone of us last year if this would happen in '08 playoffs , you would get a smack remark. "you could be in cracks to dream big with these scrubs.".

Therefore, in short NO COMPLAINTS, we're enjoying paradise.

Mamba24, please put me on the 'I support Rad/Vlad' bandwagon as whatever you feel is appropriate.

I love bandwagons, and I'd love to hop on the sweeo bandwagon...but that 37-4 record is staring me in the face like an expectant kitty-kat. It might leap at me and bite me or something.

Here's a question to be debated in a fun and formal manner: How many of this years players are under contract for next season? Who stays and who goes? I know Luke is here for a spell, Kobe's got 2 years, Bynum's under contract through next year, but what about LO07? What about Rad Vlad? Mihm, Mbenga and Turiaf? Sasha could get some big offers after this year if he's up, too. I ask because we are WAAAAAY over the luxury tax and I want to see this team plus Bynum for at least one season. Great win, gang. I think we can expect the free throw situation to flip-flop in Salt Lake, so let's leave our whine at home on Friday and just get tough and chippy.

Congrtas, Kobe, I never thought it could happen to someone who is consistently called the best in the league, just 'cause there are so many haters.

GO LAKERS!!!!!

Mamba24,

I am starting to think we may be able to continue this win streak to 20, what with Stern in Kobe's back pocket and all. Not sure if a bandwagon is in order for this one. But put me on the sweep the Jazz for sure.

FYI
David Stern sent an email yesterday to Stu Jackson, Jerry Buss, and Kobe (I hacked Sterns computer so now I am blind copied on all his email) that said he was going to stop by the ref's lounge before the game and offer to split Delaneys salary for the next 3 years amongst the ref team if they guarneteed a Lakers/Celtics matchup. So there you have it. Conspiricy firmly in place, now you know.

Also, Sterns email password is "KobeLover24" in case anyone else wants to get on his bcc list.

TWoody

YEeeeaaaaaahhhhhHHHHh!!!!

Real quick like, a cause I can't coment much now, I'd B proud to be on the 4th dynasty bandwagon. Make me the sultan of 3-peat madness!! Believe ladies and gents,
IT IS COMING!!!

Also, Justin S, keep announcing that 79th street NYC site. Someday I'll make it!

Also, are people psyched about the pass Kobe made around Karalinko's head to Gasol at the end of the 4th??? What??? You have got to be kidding me!!!!

GOOOOoooooooOOOOOOO LAAAAAKERS!!!!!

Lakers Legacy,

Thanks fro the update on Vlad's location the other day.

Charles,

Nice.
