Ooopah!!!
If Staples Center featured an Ouzo vendor (and if the powers that be thought outside the box a bit, they would), you'd have heard plenty of that chant getting hollered throughout the building on Wednesday. Twas a night for celebration in the ol' Staples Center shack, decreed underway by Kobe Bryant upon receiving his MVP trophy and hitting another level of "par-tay" with the Lakers' 120-110 win over the Jazz.
In the case of the latter event, the home squad ensured a celebratory vibe by riding out whatever was thrown their way. With the benefit of a geeked crowd in his pocket, Kobe was met with a wide variety of defenders assigned to shadow. And while Matt Harpring was the most relatively effective, 34 points on 11-18 shooting reflects nobody really stopping The Mamba. They weathered a huge second half from Deron Williams, one that could have been more effective had D.Will's rocky opening not have helped keep the Jazz permanently out of sync. In particular, Carlos Boozer found the sledding tough, mostly dividing his time between taste testing Gatorade flavors on the bench and struggling to stroke nylon. But at least he found some company from his mates in the latter struggle. The Jazz entered a boatload of FGA's into the box score, but didn't find nearly the same numbers when it came to actual makes (45).
Not that Utah's misses prevented them from ever making a run. Quite the opposite, in fact. But the numerous pushes all shared one commonality: None ever really placed the Lakers in, as "Ocean's 11" fans refer to it, "Barney Rubble" (or "trouble," for the non-movie goers). Thwarting those efforts began with the tone set by Kobe and the super smart Derek Fisher, both steeped in successful playoff "been there, done that" (and the latter perhaps in the unsung hero in the Lakers' unexpectedly sweet season). Sasha Vujacic, Lamar Odom (especially gung ho and hitting the boards like a madman) and Pau Gasol all brought their basket prowess to the proceedings, doing their part to create an absurd 57% clip from the field. Whatever the Jazz brought was eventually answered twofold or greater, providing plausible reason Kobe feels an urge to avoid making vacation plans for early June.
Playing late into that month would be the perfect capper to what can be described as a magical season for the Lakers. What's not to like? The vibe permeating throughout a happy locker room. Pau Gasol's arrival bringing about Bowie-esque ch-ch-changes. The back story surrounding Kobe's eventual trophy triumph, one that involves a player once famous for keeping teammates at a purposeful distance, now a believer in creating roster bonds that never break (unless bread is involved, of course). Exhibiting trust towards teammates that blossoms into production beyond anybody's imagination. And as an added bonus, the good fortune all jives with David Stern's master plan.
Laker Land's only current bummer? News that Andrew Bynum may need surgery for his troublesome knee. Approximately another month will go by in waiting, and if there's no significant pain reduction, an exploratory session with the knife may be the next step for answers.

Good Morning Fam!!!

This made me laugh. Sam Cassell is definitely a clown. I wish he'd do us all a favor and put on a wig and red nose to hide that fugly crown of his. Even his fouls are ugly.
Christopher L. Gasper of The Boston Globe: "Sam Cassell, who broke into the league during the rough-and-tumble mid-1990s, said the NBA is protecting Cavaliers star LeBron James in a way it never did with Michael Jordan. ... 'Wow. It's just different right now,' said Cassell yesterday following practice 'They gave me a flagrant-1 foul, and no way in the world was it a flagrant-1 foul. I'm going to call [NBA vice president] Stu [ Jackson] and see what he thinks about that. That's not a flagrant-1 foul at all. Back in the day, a flagrant-1 was bloodshed. Now, you can just grab somebody ... It's the new NBA.' Cassell added, 'I know Michael Jordan is sitting at home right now pouting because they didn't protect him. There wasn't no bigger star than him, and he took some banging. But he got through it. That's why he got considered the best player to pick up a basketball.'"

Anyone else feel kinda dirty whenever David Stern is around? I understand that the NBA is a business but a part of me wonders how much influence he (and league disciplinarians, refs) are having on playoff outcomes... I want the Lakers to go all the way--without wondering if Stern helped out a bit!

Hey Mamba and Ken, I'd like to hitch a ride on the sweep the Jazz bandwagon and support Vlad/Rad bandwagon.
Both are worthwhile rides.
Great win by the guys. I still think the 2nd unit has to find its footing, but Kobe is doing some magical stuff. Those Jazz are a pretty resilient bunch, so while the first unit is certainly having its way, I'd like to see the bench become more assertive on D.
I hope we can get a decisive blowout at Utah. While Deron and Milsap don't seem to get their spirits knocked down to much, the rest of that team does. Hopefully we can just help them confirm to themselves that they just can't beat the Lakers.

Thanks for the clip of the night, it was truly rocking in Staples. Well deserved Kobe. It seems that the whole team is focus and really believe they are going to the finals. I know I beleive.

I've been a Lakers fan for a long, long time. I know that it might sound crazy to some of you (read: those of you who were fans in the '80s), but this is my favorite Lakers team to watch. Maybe I'm just caught up in the moment, but I haven't had goosebumps watching a Lakers game for a long time, and this season there have been plenty of occasions where I find myself blown away at the chemistry, the ball movement, and the energy of this squad.
What a great time of year. And what a great run.

If Stern had any influence on playoff outcomes, do you seriously think we would have Detroit v San Antonio or Cleveland v. SA Finals? Don't you think the Suns would have made a Final? That's an absurd thought, one shared by "The Great Hate", TJ Simers.
Posted by: cap | May 08, 2008 at 10:24 AM
Good morning guys! It feels even better to have such a great team this year with no drama! are our Lakers the only team who have yet to lose a game during the playoffs? I think they are, which just shows how great they are. Eeeeek, it feels good to be a fan right now :)

What a night... another in an endless stream of great nights this organization has provided. I'm hoarse, and spent.
By the tunnel, you can see a new kind of confidence in the players eyes, a belief. It was always there with Kobe, but it's spread all the way down the bench.
Phil's got this machine hummin'.
This is INEVITABLE... the ultimate bandwagon.

Are you posting on the Utah Jazz post? If not, there is another Mamba24 out there. Nice post though.
These Jazz fans are all complaining about some sort of foul calling conspiracy. They forget that their loved Jazz LEAD THE LEAGUE with fouling.
How many of you guys are getting that feel that we had in January and February when at the start of eah game, we knew we would win. I love that feeling...
Even when the lead was cut to 5 last night, I KNEW something big was going to bust it open for the Lakers.
Good game. Let's punch them in the gut tomorrow (VERY BIG GAME AS FAR AS ALLOWING THE JAZZ TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES) and close this out on Sunday.
GO LAKERS!!

Outlaw:
I agree..........no Lakers team since the Magic days has had the "feel' that this one does for me. It's really easy to get caught up in just how good they share the ball and find the right guy at the right moment.
One thing I truly miss, though. When the games got to the second roung and were not on KCAL9 or Prime Ticket, I had become used to being able to turn the volume down on the tube and watch while I listened to Chick give us the "word's eye view" of the game. Man, I miss Chick, but I know he's smiling down on this team, beaming with pride!
This is truly a special team, and the word for them is simply DYNASTIC!
Posted by: toad | May 08, 2008 at 10:40 AM
I hate to admit it, but I totally agree that the refs are trying to rob the Jazz and hand the series to the Lakers. I especially thought this at the end of the 1st and 3rd quarters of Game 1 when our players were brutally assaulted driving to the basket and no fouls were called. Totally unfair to the Jazz!
I have a better idea for you whining Jazz fans who've come to take the place of Fire32 and his ilk: why don't you buy tickets to Games 3 and 4 and then boo Derek Fisher even more loudly than you did earlier this year? I guarantee you it will be a major help to your team's chances.
Jazz fans - like they used to say about Rudy on Fat Albert: NC (no class!!!)
Add me to the Lakers Sweep Bandwagon!!!

Folks I've said it once and I'll say it again, Pau Gasol is fool's gold. Defense and rebounding wins championships people. Sure Pau may put up great offensive numbers, but if you think this team is better now than it was with Kwame starting at center then you better wake up.
Have you seen Pau leg muscles? They are nothing to write home about. Kwame on the other hand is a freak of nature, a true one in a million. Damn his calves are so delicious.
I have studied the basketball and specifically the Lakers for the past 15 years. When you watch the game you are watching the ball, but I watch the footwork and I see the "real" game. I see what is really happening.
We need to trade Gasol and Bynum for Kwame straight up if we want to be a real contender. My studies demonstrate this time and again.
I will post my analytical studies in 24 days and the whole world will see. My studies will probably get Phil Jackson fired for allowing Kwame to be traded and not playing Kwame more when he was here.
Don't buy into the Pau hype. Sure we will probably win 2 out of the next 3 titles, but those will be fools gold titles, not the real deal.
Wake up!
DOOOO BEEEEE DOOOOOO BEEEEEE DOOOOOOOO

Good Morning Lakers Nation
Another good day to be a Lakers Fan
Game deciding stat:
Utah 58 pts in the paint
Lakers 40 pts in the paint
But.......
Lakers were 35-43 at the FT line and MOST of those fouls came because.....
We were in the paint.
We control the paint.
We own the paint.
Utah bigs are in constant foul trouble because the paint is our home.
As I say, "there is nothing like home sweet paint'
And you can't beat 'home painted cooking'
You add those pts and those FT's and it equals one big win.
The Lakers are master artists painting a master piece of a four game sweep.
Mamba, sir, Fatty is on board the sweep bandwagon. Make me the 'Grease monkey that keeps these wheels a turning!'

Good morning Laker Nation ...
I heard someone this morning talking about the gist of the TJ Simers article. This reinforces the reason I will never click on one of his stories -- complete, unadulterated crap. You want the refs to stop blowing the whistle, here’s a novel concept, STOP FOULING every trip down the floor. Harpering was on Kobe like they were dating for God’s sake.
Yes, the NBA wants the Lakers to win so bad that they will risk a billion dollar industry over a "fix". And yeah I forgot that the Lakers got all the breaks against Phx the last two years and won the championship. The NBA has been so great at fixing the games that their rating the last five years were better than ever. Give me an F'n break.
And hey -- TJ and Jazz fans, assume it's true that the NBA will do anything to get the Lakers to the finals -- Well, then I say it's good to be a Laker fan and it SUCKS TO BE YOU -- whining dogs.

AK/BK,
I still would love to know why Vlad blew off Kobe's MVP award ceremony while the rest of his teammates (save AB on his medical journey) attended. Given the cohesiveness of the team, and the efforts Kobe has made in bonding with them, it stuck me as a real slap in the face to Kobe that Vlad couldn't be bothered to show his support. Since you made a point of mentioning it in the first place, how about a little follow up?

Love the roll call! Yeah!
Now for the game...defensively there are still some improvements to be had. For starters we need to not let them take the momentum in the third quarter. They have made their pushes courtesy of the third. Fortunately for us, we make our own push late in the fourth. But that’s skating a bit too much in the edge for me, so we need to maintain the pressure. Our second unit, outside of some players have been playing late third…early fourth lacksaidaisical of late, and it’s getting our mo (created by the second unit) switched. Not to mention our D. You expect some lag in D with a faster pace, but that doesn’t mean you don’t get back and play D. Shots need to be challenged, every shot. We got killed in some transition D...and others that aren't quite transition but open lane nonetheless. Simply unacceptable. And yes I'm saying that with a 2-0 lead lol.
Go Lakers!

What's shaking Laker Nation?
Goodness, last night was one for the ages, starting with that awesome MVP ceremony. Truly a no doubter that the Lakers would win. As good as the game was, I am a little surprised at Vlad's performance, I was really hoping he'd break out of this funk but he did nothing of the sort. I really hope he gets it together soon because he can be a tremendous asset to our championship run.

JANAYA:"MAMBA24, BTW....anytime a Bandwagon is POSITIVE, sign me up!! I just don't like
any negative ones, ya know?"
NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.
we need all the positive vibes we can get for tomorrow.
I predict - Sorry - a double overtime with Lakers squeaking
out a 3 point win

I'll be the guy in charge of polishing Kobe's MVP trophy on the Sweep Bandwagon.
