A whole new ball game?

May 9, 2008 |  9:10 am

The popular saying is that a series doesn't truly begin until a team loses one on its home court, a saying that the Utah Jazz is taking to heart this evening as it preps for game 3 (6:00 pm PST, ESPN).  But even if the notion that L.A. merely held serve is indeed the case, that doesn't mean a shift of venues works as a Robitussin-style cure all.  Only thirteen teams in NBA history have pulled out a series after falling behind, 2-0.  Of course, there's a difference between long odds and impossible ones, a fact this Utah squad knows via firsthand experience. They also come armed with a coach who knows a thing or two about teaching an effective pick and roll.  Plus, they consider themselves in possession of an ace in the hole, an arena with everything from  deafening volume to a motorcycling bear that's capable of creating a boxed in effect on the home team.  That boisterous crowd isn't afraid to get in a player's ear, even ex-Jazzman Derek Fisher, whose 365-day-old story is considered inspirational by everyone but the SLC residents (and speaking of anniversaries, nearly 11 years ago to the day, Kobe Bryant used a high-profile failure in Utah to gain wisdom for a brilliant career).

So how will the Lakers look to counter this admittedly tough obstacle?  For starters, they can take a page from Coach Dale Norman's Hickory High play book, which involves a tape measure and some calm perspective.  Matching or even besting Utah's numbers on the boards would also be a plus, although the Lakers have already started moving in the right direction.   It also wouldn't hurt to note the lack of believable swagger in the voice of their opponents.  The one approach they shouldn't apply, however, is a game plan involving the services of Trevor Ariza.  The latest CAT scan shows damage still lingering, which will force him to miss at least two more weeks before getting medical clearance.

The average Kobe fan's allegiance can border on zealotry, in the eyes of those on the outside looking in.  Of course, the first time The Logo looked in Bryant's direction, he was pretty much hooked, too.  After all the ups and downs, the roller-coaster rides and titles, Bryant has become family for many a Laker enthusiast.

Marge Hearn says Chick would be enjoying this run.  The Lakers' first lady would know.

The NBA playoffs may be where amazing happens, but is the NHL postseason even more amazing-er?

If Mike D'Antoni really wants to prove he and his system wasn't the problem in Phoenix, he'll make it work with the Knicks, who put their offer on the table (depending on how much much stock you put in an ESPN report, that is).  Or he could just take the easy (or as some would call it, "sane") route and take a gig in Chicago.

Tim-4-Show, how you be man? Good to see you know
your priorities...The Mrs. first, The Lakers second LOL!

Tim-4-Show

The Lakers are already doing what no team has done.........we are, after all, UNDEFEATED and will remain so after tonight.

The Ja$$ will come out as strong as they can, but if we can win the first 5 minutes of the game and the first quarter with focus, intensity and defense, they're done, we can stcik a fork in 'em! Kobe and Fish will have all the guys on top of thier games for the opening tip!

LET'S GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10 TO 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man, the mormons finally learned how to scalp tickets out here...prices are through the roof! I'm glad my bro and I got our fat hookups for each game, otherwise our hot seats would be like 3 bills per.

Should be pretty raucous tonight...and the Jazz fans might be loud as well. :)

I plan on representing well with my freshly signed Rambis jersey (as of last game here)...

By the way, anybody have that old "It's the Lakeshow" song anywhere?? I've been trying to find it so I can blast it around the arena today, but have had issues...Anybody that can score that will get some mad props here!

Rose,

You wrote "I would pretend they were cheering for me.... Is that lame?"

Maybe at staples when the Lakers are on Offense, the crowd could chant "Offence"

Dum .............. Dum, OFFENCE!
Dum,Dum,Dum,Dum, OFFENCE!

So we would be used to running our offense with that in the background. Then when we are on the road and they are doing the D-Fence chant, the players can pretend its the "Offense" chant @ Staples.

That probably just made no sense. HaHa

:(

Go LAKERS!

SLC

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!

10 to 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JesterGuru:"(Actually, I think there is: It's called Karma and it's a bitch.)"
AMEN, JESTERGURU,
AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

i know we don't usually listen to john hollinger but (from espn.com):

"In the Lakers' case, they could be unbelievably good. Between getting Andrew Bynum back, having another year of Kobe and Pau in their primes, and surrounding them with all the other quality young talent (Farmar, Ariza, Turiaf, et al), the sky's the limit. If everything breaks right, next year's Lakers could be one of the best teams ever."

Happy Game Day, Lakers friends!!!

Charles: I answered your Spanish post from the other day (second to last comment on the "Game 2 will feature an official MVP" post)... I don't know if you've already seen it... just didn't want you to think I'd ignored you. :-)

I know a lot of Lakers/Pau fans in Spain read this blog, even if they don't comment... just to let you all know, if you did know already: tonight's game will be show live at 3:00 am on Cuatro! Yoohooo! No watching fuzzy streaming video on the internet this time!!!

Go Lakers! Make it 3 - 0 tonight!!! (I've got a broom that is itchin' to help out with the sweep...)

Psyched,

I read that same report around that time. I'm pretty sure it was Peter Vescey that wrote it, which easily discredits the report because the guy is essentially an earlier version of Bucher. Straight gossip reporter. I think the Lakers are just being overly cautious about it. Even if they didn't know about it, the Laker doctors would've had to clear Trev in order to complete the trade. It was low risk no matter what, because the Lakers got some money under the cap in the deal, and Trevor is only on the books for 1 1/2 seasons. Low risk, high reward.

He'll be back soon. I'm an antsy pants.

From the "Nothing You Can Do About It Now" Department: It's no use crying over spilled milk, but before everyone heaps all this praise on Mitch K. for his brilliant schemes, maybe he should look a little closer before he leaps. He should have had T.A.'s medical history and his physical condition checked out thoroughly before pulling the trigger on the Mo Evans trade. But then I guess if he used the same Docs that said T.A. and Drew would make it back in 8 wks., they would have ok'ed the trade anyway.

Nevertheless, Mo was quite happy here being a Laker and has since showed his worth in Orlando. 9.3 PPG during the season and 8.0 during the playoffs and 3 RPG. Not too shabby. And Cookie? 5 PPG and 2.2 RPG in 45 games with the Magic. So, that's 14.3 PPG and 5.2 RPG that Mitch traded away for T.A. who hasn't been able to give the Lakers anything since early January.

Don't get me wrong. I like T.A. He's a heck of a defender, but he's injury-prone and a slow healer. I know it's not his fault. It's genetic

But I like Mo, too. He was a hard worker and looking forward to being a Laker this year.

So, Mitch, do your homework next time. Unless, of course, it was PJ who wanted you to make the trade, then all is forgiven. BTW, Thanks for Gasol.

EDDIE BROCK:" If everything breaks right, next year's Lakers could be one of the best teams ever.""

Sure, everybody wants to get on the BandWagon Now.
It's cool to be a LakerFan. But Hollinger there is no
room left on the bandwagon. Holinger can pay for the gas though.

TONIGHT WE'RE GOING TO KICK SOME JAZZ AZZ!!!!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING LAKER NATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MAMBA24!!! YYYYYAAAAAAYYYYY!!!

We sat here in idle disbelief. He could not have just left the blog...not the mamba... We asked him to come back..we begged him, and still nothing. Like Superman, one day he was here, then he was gone. Where did he go? What was he doing? Was he abducted by Jazz fans so he couldn't keep the Laker Nation alive with his spirit? Was he drowning his sorrows in a dive bar on the bad side of Beverly Hills? Did he go blind and crash when he saw Tom Cruise drive by completely naked in a convertible smacking himself in the face with pantie hose filled with Jello while listening to Ride of the Valkyries? (anything is possible with Tom Cruise) No..none of these make sense, so I offer my opinion...He just had a mild case of Gonoherpesiphilaids and needed to rest dor a while.

Open letter to Benjamin

like how the article about Sloan talks about what a reliable tough taskmaster he was, but neglects to mention what a raging homophobe he was. It seems fairly likely he would have had a better team had he given Jon Amechi some playing time.

me,

I want you on this board apologizing for being incorrect tomorrow.

The Lakers will WIN.

The Jazz are the ones who should be scared... not us.

never,

I'm proud of you for your consistency. During this season and playoffs you've predicted doom-and-gloom so many times, I stopped count it. You like this weather man who never can get it right even 6-hours forecast...

Derron Williams looked like he found his first rhythm of the series half way through the 3rd quarter in game 2. Hopefully that success won't leak into game 3.

I know Utah is really good at home. And I know they are as tough as any team in the league. But I also know NO team in the playoffs is playing better than LA and I know no one has the MVP on their team.
LETS GO LA!

Go Jester, enjoy your natal day. According to Mamba24, I'm a party animal. What animal are you going to feed?

BTW, this is a long overdue follow up AK/BK got the awards, Kobe got his MVP and the crowd at Staples got their T-Shirts. How about these nincompoof bloggers here, where is our blog t-shirts? Compliments of the many sponsors of AK/BK. When the blog was starting three years ago, we used to get follow up on our comments about the Lakers. No T Shirts, No Love.

Any sign of JW Weathermen? How about Staples24? Any reactions from Gunner24 about the MVP awards. I told Gunner one time that Kobe will get the MVP because of Gunner. Kobe made it because he was reading the posts of Gunner and followed the advice to the letter that led to more assists, high percentage shots, more love from his teammates. Bingo.

Anyway, we are almost half way of the playoffs, time to post again and be counted.

Mamba,

I remember when I first began to watch the Lakers, I was 15/16 and I watched because of Fisher, in all the years I watched the man and read the things written about him never once did I ever hear anyone say a negative thing about him. I was devastated when he left but always wished him well, I don’t know anyone who ever booed him or would ever think to when he was with the Warriors or with the Jazz. I couldn't believe what I was hearing when they booed him, shame on them. Hell has no furry like a Fisher fan scorned

GO LAKERS!

Good morning Laker Bloggers!

Sucks to read about Ariza, with how wrong they have been about predictions on clearances, I am not expecting him back.

Some good articles written (SportshubLA, Bill Dwyre) thanks for the links, K Bros.

Glad to read that it was Marge Hearn who gave out the game ball last time. (somehow didnt catch that on TV)
Chick really would have loved this team.

Happy birthday to the jester and the guru.

I actually do hope D'antoni lands with the Knicks, so I can laugh at both of them at the same time. Good luck in dealing with Starbury!

Utah is a great home team, but we are also a great road team. Its gonna be physical down there tonight with home court and all, so I think Boozer will bounce back. But we can still affect Deron if we get a block on him early on, he seems to stop penetrating after that.

Lets go Lakers! Lets go!

The Lakers got TA for one his defensive skills at the 3 position that we desperately need. Vlade is wondering aimlessly most of the time allowing his man to score at will. His shooting has suffered in the Utah series. He has open looks to the basket all the time but couldn't knock them down. Walton is a defensive liability in the post and not scoring enough to help out his teammates. Kobe has done a marvelous job at the 3 when Sasha was inserted as a shooting guard.

It will be tough game tonight. I expect Boozer to come out firing to make up for his miserable games at Staple Center. We need Lamar to be active and score in the 20s tonight. Fish and Sasha would also have to contribute when they double team Kobe. Pau has yet to have a breakthrough game and I think tonight could be the one....

Go Lakers!!

Frank1rizzo,
Actually that would sound a little lame.... But whatever works, I'm in. Hopefully no one will throw a beer out on to the court tonight...

Charles,
How are you my friend? I'm here at work right now, getting ready for the game on Tv tonight. I hope we stay undefeated and if so, that would send an extremely STRONG message that we're not going anywhere anytime soon.

Colorado loves the Lakers!

I'm really enjoying beating up on teams with goofball mascots this year. Can someone line up a blue hornet in tights, so we can extinguish that thing too?

Hello, my Laker family!
We need to take the crowd out of the game early.
The Jazz will be fighting with spit and vinegar in their blood tonight.
This is the perfect time for the Black Mamba and crew to RIP THE HEARTS OUT OF EVERY JAZZ PLAYER AND FAN ON NATIONAL TELEVISION.
Let's pray they can do it.
MICHGAN LAKER

Hey Mamba24! Hey Laker bros and sis!

Fisher should go for 20 again to shut the Utah crowd.

EDWIN GUECO"BTW, Kobe got his MVP and the crowd at Staples got their T-Shirts. How about these incompoof bloggers here, where is our blog t-shirts? Compliments of the many sponsors of AK/BK. LOL! YOU TELL THEM EDWIN. When we win the title
maybe Kobe will pick up the check like he did the
dinner check! LOL!

Here's a comment from a foxsports.com article where Nash says that Mike will be back, Mike's his coach.

"I see a lot of references to me. Better keep The Big Bust's name outta your mouths, before the diesal comes lookin for ya."

Too funny!

Thorpe says Jazz will win, Accuscore has us at 39% chance to win. I like our odds.

Lakers need to stay focus, limit their TO and be aggressive. Break their spirit.

Sasha attacked by a cougar!!

We are all witnesses. But not everything about the LeBron is worth witnessing. Sure, he has the $400,000 car, Jay-Z in his corner, and Phil Knight wrapped around his diamond pinkie ring. But witness how His Greatness treats the little people, and you may begin to see the virtue of Brendan Haywood's hard fouls.

One of LeBron's favorite places to dine is XO Prime Steaks on West Sixth. Its mix of swank drinks and delicately massaged beef allows the Chosen One to consume calories worthy of his royal digestive system. All of which is swell — except that LeBron is among Cleveland's stingiest tippers.

According to a Punch source, a peer recently quit after tiring of LeBron going Scrooge McDuck on his ass.

It went down like this: LeBron pulls up in his Mercedes outside XO. People stop and try not to stare, but c'mon, it's LeBron James. He enters the restaurant with a group of friends. On this special occasion, the King decides to dine late. He keeps his group there until around 3:45 a.m. During this time the waiter obsequiously pours drinks and fetches anything else His Greatness needs.

The final bill comes to $800. By the feudal laws of decorum, which stipulate that the affluent should administer a 20 percent gratuity, staffers figured they'd be pocketing an extra $160. But when they fetched the autographed bill after His Heinousness bolted back to Akron, their expectation turned to disbelief, then anger.

LeBron stiffed them with a meager $10 tip. This is what French nobles like to call your requisite Bourgeois Bitch-Slap. The waiter wouldn't even take it, tired of being shat on by guys like LeBron.

Still, at least the self-proclaimed King of Ohio didn't pull a Bernie Kosar — who gets sloshed at the bar and then has to remind the waiters of who he is before he stiffs them.

GOOD GOD!!! I FEEL GOOD, KNEW THAT I WOULD

Two thoughts:

1) Utah is adrift. I would never rule out a team, especially when they're headed to their home court, but I heard an interview with Millsap on local SLC TV this morning regarding if the Jazz could win four of the next five. "We could ... Nothing is impossible." That may sound like a rallying cry -- albeit a weak one -- but everything in his body language and tone said, "We're toast," and he may have said the words, but you could tell he didn't believe them.

2) About Kobe's airballs a decade ago: Some people made him out to be a gunner and a loose cannon because of them, but the plain fact was, there was no one else on the team to take those shots. And the coach confirmed it by saying, "Kobe was the only one who would shoot" or words to that effect. Hey, I loved Eddie Jones, but he was never going to be called Mr. Clutch. The thought of taking a shot with the game on the line would make his eyes glaze over. And Van Exel had already given up, letting everyone else shoot as if to make a point.

So Kobe was left to dangle in the wind. He's missed precious few since then. And when he has, somebody like Robert Horry was standing around to clean up.
