A whole new ball game?
The popular saying is that a series doesn't truly begin until a team loses one on its home court, a saying that the Utah Jazz is taking to heart this evening as it preps for game 3 (6:00 pm PST, ESPN). But even if the notion that L.A. merely held serve is indeed the case, that doesn't mean a shift of venues works as a Robitussin-style cure all. Only thirteen teams in NBA history have pulled out a series after falling behind, 2-0. Of course, there's a difference between long odds and impossible ones, a fact this Utah squad knows via firsthand experience. They also come armed with a coach who knows a thing or two about teaching an effective pick and roll. Plus, they consider themselves in possession of an ace in the hole, an arena with everything from deafening volume to a motorcycling bear that's capable of creating a boxed in effect on the home team. That boisterous crowd isn't afraid to get in a player's ear, even ex-Jazzman Derek Fisher, whose 365-day-old story is considered inspirational by everyone but the SLC residents (and speaking of anniversaries, nearly 11 years ago to the day, Kobe Bryant used a high-profile failure in Utah to gain wisdom for a brilliant career).
So how will the Lakers look to counter this admittedly tough obstacle? For starters, they can take a page from Coach Dale Norman's Hickory High play book, which involves a tape measure and some calm perspective. Matching or even besting Utah's numbers on the boards would also be a plus, although the Lakers have already started moving in the right direction. It also wouldn't hurt to note the lack of believable swagger in the voice of their opponents. The one approach they shouldn't apply, however, is a game plan involving the services of Trevor Ariza. The latest CAT scan shows damage still lingering, which will force him to miss at least two more weeks before getting medical clearance.
The average Kobe fan's allegiance can border on zealotry, in the eyes of those on the outside looking in. Of course, the first time The Logo looked in Bryant's direction, he was pretty much hooked, too. After all the ups and downs, the roller-coaster rides and titles, Bryant has become family for many a Laker enthusiast.
Marge Hearn says Chick would be enjoying this run. The Lakers' first lady would know.
The NBA playoffs may be where amazing happens, but is the NHL postseason even more amazing-er?
If Mike D'Antoni really wants to prove he and his system wasn't the problem in Phoenix, he'll make it work with the Knicks, who put their offer on the table (depending on how much much stock you put in an ESPN report, that is). Or he could just take the easy (or as some would call it, "sane") route and take a gig in Chicago.

The countdowns begun and it’s so fine
After tonight we will be down to nine
Nine games that is and then you’ll see
The beginning of The Lakers 4th Dynasty
All of the Blog family is beginning to appear
Even Stevie Wonder could see it’s The Lakers year
Alas poor Phoenix, they have crashed and burned
They won’t rise from the ashes It’s the Lakers Turn
Jazz fans on DFish you have talked a lot of junk
Kobe says tonight we’ll show you who’s the Punk
Jon K. says for us to stomp the Jazz in the throat
I say drop em in Salt lake and see if they float.
Fatty’s given the word and the word is REVENGE
So tonight the Jazz’s @ss is going to get singed
But I don’t hate the Jazz, they are nothing but a pest
Yet you can’t be soft if you expect to rule the West
Will it be the Hornets or the Spurs as our next foe?
I say who gives a F, whoever it is they got to go
T.O says “Get Your Popcorn” this is going to be a treat
Sorry Jazz, but tonight you are going to get beat.

GAME DAY!!!!!!
Great to star the day off with a roll call, thank you Maba 24.
Tonights going to be tough but we've been playing at such a high level we're going to be hard to beat. I can see either team winning. Should be a good one. I'm sure Kobe will give us another MVP performance. Just needs another strong game by LO.
GO LAKERS
Posted by: mrbarneydangles | May 09, 2008 at 09:24 AM
Very bad news about Trevor. Very, very bad news. But it's still INEVITABLE.
Posted by: Vman | May 09, 2008 at 09:26 AM
I really, really hope Ariza can get back before we face the Hornets.
The Lakers expected Trevor to be cleared for tonight's game, so hopefully it just needs a smidgen more healing and then he can help with CP3.
We could really use him next round and beyond.

hey guys im new at this is the first time i post here. Man im really worried about tonight i feel like we are gonna lose this game cuz its tough winning over there in Utah and i we won last time without Pau but i dont know. I really want them to win tonight more than anything

Man...Laker Fam
Tonight is the big night. Every sports pundit is saying that the Lakers look the most dominant in the playoffs so far but our biggest test comes tonight. If we pull out a victory tonight, that would send a message to the rest of the teams in the playoffs. Some keys to the game are Vlad Rad needs to have a big game. He has stepped up the D, but we need him scoring on 3's and taking it to the hoop. Watch for the pick and roll tonight.
Go Lakers

I like how the article about Sloan talks about what a reliable tough taskmaster he was, but neglects to mention what a raging homophobe he was. It seems fairly likely he would have had a better team had he given Jon Amechi some playing time.
The old-fashioned guys sometimes harken back to the good old days, the good old days of bigotry.
Posted by: Benjamin | May 09, 2008 at 09:54 AM
Hey, TA won't be with us on the court tonight, but we still have what it takes to whoop the Ja$$.
As Fatty said, the word of the day is REVENGE!
Revenge for the way D-Fish got dissed by the SLC whiners. Plenty of motivation for this game.
10 TO 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Charles:" Thanks I needed that Roll Call."
Careful Charles you are starting to sound like Dr. Phil. LOL!
Posted by: Mamba24 | May 09, 2008 at 09:55 AM
Good luck to the Lakers tonight.
D'antoni should definitely take the Knicks job. They need him more than Chicago does. D'antoni can bring them some respectability. It's a bigger market and Kobe always plays well at MSG, so it'll be fun beating D'antoni in the Big Apple!
Posted by: mel | May 09, 2008 at 09:58 AM
Hello my Laker brothers and sisters. It's game day. I just wanted to share a little love before I head out and find a Mother's Day Gift for my wife. I'm so jacked up for the game today, I decided that work might distract me from my focus. Good to see you all in this morning. Mamba, Nice poem.Poignant and succinct.
Let's rip their referee whining throats out tonight.

GO LAKERS!!!!
I'd like to say that this is a great Blog.
I would say that the keys to the game is the lakers conitnuing to attack the rim and getting to the line. This takes deron williams out of the game, and utah has not looked to impresive in the half court sets especially with boozer struggling in the post.
the LAkes need to have another strong first quarter like in game two. I don't know about you guys but i have to say that was probably the best first quarter i have ever seen these guys play.
LO needs to have another strong game on the boards and start off aggressive like in game 2.
This series is ours to win because we are better than the Jazz in the open floor and we can dominate the half court because when all else fails we can just run Isolation for that guy with the #24 jersey what's his name oh yeah Kobe Bryant our MVP!!!!!

Funny site.
I'm mad at Trevor Ariza's healing ability and how conservative the Laker training staff is being. If he isn't experiencing any pain and can run and jump and do it without any pain, then he should be at least able to practice with the team. It's getting really silly. If they are waiting for the bone to be 100% healed, then he's not playing again for a long time. Bones don't heal like flesh heals. I broke my wrist and they let me get back to activity 12 weeks later. I think they are biding time right now with this whole fiasco and it's really starting to piss me off.

Kobesbad,
Applesauce 'em.
Posted by: mel | May 09, 2008 at 10:06 AM
Maybe they should give Ariza some osteoperosis (sp?) meds like Atenol or other to strenghten his bones.

Present!
Morning Charles, Larry and all.
Gooooooo Lakers.
I know his teams were really fun to watch and all but I am so celebrating D'Antoni's fall. LOL if he winds up coaching the Knicks. But, hey, maybe he can actually make them relevant again -- in the East.
What a jackass.
I miss Chick. Good to see Marge is still enjoying life and Lakers though!
All I want for my birthday weekend is a two wins in Utah.

Is there a SASHA SHOULD START OVER VLAD RAD bandwagon?
If there is, put me on it!! Phil obviously has so much faith in Sasha now, as he left him in during most of the 4th quarter crunch time in game 2, when the game was on the line.
I think he's ready to start.
Posted by: hava98 | May 09, 2008 at 10:13 AM
Thanks for the Roll Call Mamba --
This is one of those games that measures how far our team has come. Very hostile environment and likely underdogs (according to Vegas, ESPN, Simers). There is no question that the Jazz are the next victim -- but it may take 5 -- OMG 5!
Mel, maybe D'Antoi can now "bust" the bobcats, raptors and bucks ... how the mighty have fallen.
Posted by: HmrHed | May 09, 2008 at 10:13 AM
Mamba,
Its cool to see the roll call again... even though I'm not on it. :(
I think the key tonight will be how the ref's call the game. If they let the Jazz get away with all the Sloan dirty tricks (Pushing in the back, pulling jerseys, holding, ect) the Lakers might have a hard time adjusting and may loose their cool.
We'll see what happens.

Don't worry the guys have this handled, DFish & Kobe will not allow the team to back down, sputter, or fizz. The Jazz season is coming to end this weekend.

Can't wait until tip-off to get this party started!

Most of us already think it so I'm gonna come out and say it. The Lakers will beat the Jazz in this series (I don't know in how many games) and will have to match up against either NO or SAS. In my opinion, I would prefer facing the SAS. NO seems to be a bad matchup for the Lakers and I would hate to see CPO drop 30 and 20 against the Lakers that frequently. We have some decent gaurds but CPO is in a class of his own. Another reason I want to see the Lakers match up against the SAS is for revenge. I hate the SAS, almost as equally as the Suns, and would love to see their dreams of a repeat get crushed by Kobe and the crew.
If you guys had to pick between NO and SAS for the Lakers to match up against in the WCF, who would you pick?

Charles,
Thanks! I've been trying to get a little more "work" done lately, ha ha ha.
Not sure about Hugo, I'm sure he's still around. Some of his friends were making the trek to Salt Lake to watch the game. I would have gone, but I had too much to do. Maybe next season I'll just travel on the road during the playoffs, wouldn't that be fun?
Fatty, thanks for the advice. I'm cleaning up around the house right now just to keep Mrs 4 (FO') Show happy.
Tonight is going to be a MAD HOUSE.
The Home Team in the 2nd round is 10-0.
Can the Lakers do what no one has yet to do???
I'll put it this way, if the Lakers find a way to win tonight, Lord help the other teams in the NBA, because I'm 100% sure the Jazz will come out fighting like a pit bull on steroids and PCP.
Posted by: Tim-4-Show | May 09, 2008 at 10:43 AM
"Game 3 is no different," Kobe Bryant said. "No matter how loud the crowd is or what's going on, we just have to focus on what we have to do. It's just noise."
All this hype about the home crowd in Utah and them being so loud, I don't think it poses a real threat... Kobe is right, it is just noise. I understand that it gets the players pumped but is the crowd going to actually go on the court and play the game for them?
I would pretend they were cheering for me.... Is that lame?
Go Lakers!
Posted by: Rose | May 09, 2008 at 10:46 AM
Good morning everyone, I'm already counting the hours till the game, if we win at least one of these two games the Jazz are done for, I just hope we rip their hearts out for the way they treated Fsher. There should be some sort of unspoken rule that you NEVER,EVER,EVER mess with Fish. In the words of the Mamba "Lets get this party started"
Posted by: Elle | May 09, 2008 at 10:49 AM
sorry utah... there's nothing you can possibly do.
Posted by: eddie brock | May 09, 2008 at 10:51 AM
ELLE:"I just hope we rip their hearts out for the way they treated Fsher. "
OH MY GOD NO!! Now you've done it! You blood thirsty
Bloggers have even brought out the blood lust in kind ELLE.
FATTY, you are the ringleader of this! LOL!
Posted by: Mamba24 | May 09, 2008 at 10:54 AM
FWF - thanks - me too.
Amazing - "going to Lakerland" - I LOVE THAT!! I think I am using that one with my family when they call during the game at most inopportune times because they are clueless.....
Pig: if you google Trevor's name - there is a NY Daily News post right around time he was traded which hints that his injury issues are way more serious than Lakers knew which is why the trade happened. It was interesting insight. And is making me think like we took the chance and it didn't work...this season anyhow. I won't go on the training staff is lame bandwagon but I think we knew what we were getting and it was bad luck.
But no bad karma for me today - LAKERS game day! Psyched for it and can't wait to see it when I land back in Cali.
GO LAKERS!
