Live from Staples- Lakers vs. Jazz, Game 5

May 14, 2008 |  7:43 pm

Technically, it's not a must win, so we'll call it a "Damn, it sure would be seriously freakin' helpful to" win.  Kobe took his pregame shots with Sasha on his back, so I guess he's feeling OK.

I might have made that last part up.

BK with the first....

FIRST QUARTER:

First good review of the night goes to the Staples fans, who have brought their collective A Game tonight.  The noise during the pregame intros was as loud as I've ever heard.

11:40- Kobe opens by elevating and draining a three on the left wing.  He then comes back on the next possession, takes the pass, and drills a jumper from the right elbow.  Guess he's feeling OK.

5-0 LAL.

9:18- LO receives the entry from Vlad on the left block, turns expecting to see a defender... and he's all alone.  No worries.  He puts the ball on the floor, drives hard and draws the and-one.  11-6 LAL.

Kobe is moving well defensively, but has lost track of Brewer a couple times on the other end.  Hard to tell if it's because he's struggling, or simply playing more of a center field type thing.  Once, he trailed Kirilenko under the hoop, and I'm sure expected someone to rotate over.  The Jazz is too good a passing team to leave guys open, though.  Something to watch.

8:05-  The general consensus among fans is that "Utah sucks."  The Lakers, when they're not breaking down completely and giving up a dunk, are doing a great job in the half court.  Sort of an all or nothing type deal.

7:40- Kobe dribbles Brewer down in the post, and no double comes.  He makes a little hesitation move to the outside, then pivots into the lane, elevates, and hits the jumper.  13-8 LAL.  He's looking very good on the offensive end right now.  Doesn't seem limited at all, though he hasn't tried to drive yet.  If the Lakers can find enough touches for him in the post, he might not need to do it all that much.  The key will be finding enough variety in the O if he's unable to pull all the tricks out of the bag.

As of right now, things look good.  They're showing a lot of intensity on both ends, Kobe is getting good looks, and the Lakers are controlling the pace of play.  15-8 with 6:59 left in the period.

6:30- LO is doing a fantastic job on Okur, not conceding any space in the post and forcing Memo deeper out of the post.  Or further away.  Or whatever.  The point?  He's not getting easy looks.

5:13- Vlad tries to make the kick save on the entry pass to Brewer, to no avail.  He makes up for it on the other end, though, getting the pass off the cut and turning it into a bucket.  19-12 LAL.

4:00- Vlad catches the ball at the top of the circle, jab steps, pulls back, and launches.  Me:  "Oh, that better go in."  And it does.  Bingo! as Ralph Lawler would say.  Then he comes back on the next trip, and hits one in the corner.  We might finally be seeing Vladdy come out of his slump, and just in time.  But I'm telling you, had that first one not gone down, I'm not sure PJ would have left him in the game long enough for the second one to fall.

Love the primal scream from Vlad Rad on the way up the court.  He's a guy in need of letting out a little tension, to say the least.

2:52- 25-18  Lakers, timeout on the floor.  They're playing solid defense, at least when everyone sticks to his assignment.  Freelancing isn't really working all that well.  But everything in the half court is coming from the perimeter.  The Lakers are giving no space to either Boozer or Okur to work in the post.

2:19- Well, that was a horrible call.  Harpring basically backed hard into Kobe from one side of the lane to the other, then fell down.  Loose ball foul on 24.  Makes sense.  But PJ saw enough of that matchup.  Harpring would have no problem taking shot after shot on Bryant. Walton in to pick him up.  Good substitution.

1:13- 27-23 LAL.

SECOND QUARTER

10:40 - Ronny must have been caught prank calling all the refs before the series began, because the offensive called against him under the basket (tangled with Collins) was almost as bad as the ejection in game 4.

10:16 - Farmar connects on a three.  Safe to say, kid seriously needed that shot in a big, bad, ginormous kinda way.

8:26 - After much scrumming with Gasol and Farmar each snagging each other's misses and absorbing a lot of contact,  Gasol eventually draws a foul on Millsap and earns a trip to the line.  Good things generally come from hitting the boards, and that effort to keep the possession alive is just what the Lakers need to do more often.  As of now, they're getting beat on the glass, offensively and overall.

By the way, it would be an understatement to see that the refs are letting both sides play.  Lot of roughish type stuff attracting little in the way of whistle attention.

7:34 - Swarming team D (in particular from Fish and Sasha) around the arc keep the Jazz scrambling as the shot clock winds down.  Brewer eventually coughs up the rock and Kobe streaks down court, draws the foul against Harpring and sinks his freebies at the stripe.  Nice group effort to make the points happen.

5:53 - Time out Lakers, but not because the rails are on the verge of losing the car.  Quite the opposite, in fact.  The last three minutes have seen the purple and gold on a 9-2 run and Gasol's at the line courtesy of an AK-47 infraction.  One of two fall, pushing the Laker lead to 11.

5:26 - Beautiful two man game working between Kobe and Pau, shuttling the ball back and forth and slipping screens, until Kobe eventually threads Gasol with a sweet bounce pass for a chippie.

3:20 - Nice job by Fish of taking the ball inside a couple of steps, drawing a bit of attention, then spotting LO for an uncontested layup.

2:47 - Back to back turnovers for Kobe, once on a way wide pass he threw to Fish, then on a rock trickling out of bounds as he lost the grup.  That's ten in all (for the Lakers as a team, not Kobe) and it's a trend that needs a clamp down ASAP (as I type this, Gasol sends the ball out of bounds).  I don't have the stats available in front of me, but I imagine the "points off turnover" tally wouldn't please the coaching staff.

32.0 - Kobe racks a fast break layup courtesy of D.Fish's bulldog effort stripping Williams.  It took at least one floorburn to make it happen.

With just over a second to go, Gasol puts back LO's missed around the rim, bumping the Laker  advantage to the 61-54 clip it'll sit at during halftime.  There's a lot to like about what the Lakers have done tonight.  The 56% shooting.  15 assists in 24 minutes.  9 thefts.  87% at the stripe.  Unfortunately, Utah is only shooting 3% lower, in large part because of the often easy buckets they're getting off careless turnovers.  11 in all and most totally avoidable.  If the Lakers had taken better care of the ball, they could be up 15-20.  We'll see what happens in the third with BK at the helm.

THIRD QUARTER:

Lakers start the quarter with a lid on the hoop.  Meanwhile, Utah has come out of the locker room strong.

9:23- Kobe gets the ball on the right baseline, posted up on Williams, nad takes him to the hole.  Back to the basket, then to the hole.  THat was the closest thing he's been able to do all night that constitutes a drive to the hole.  He just can't put the ball on the floor right now facing up the basket.  That's the big difference in his offensive game right now.

Although on his way back up the court in open space, he was on his way again, and drew contact on AK47.

Lakers up 65-62.

8:31- LO's head has taken some abuse this year.  First the split of his head, I seem to remember stitches above his eye, and now his chin has been split open on that drive by Kirilenko.  It ain't easy to bang bodies in the NBA.  Kirilenko makes both, and it's a three point game.  Ronny in for LO, which means the Lakers will lose something on both ends, since Utah still has their starters on the floor.  They need to keep the ball moving.

7:50- Nice work from Vlad to drive and put down the finger roll.  That's a play he needs to be able to make periodically to keep defenses honest.  Then on the next trip down, he and Fish both follow Brewer on the switch, leaving Williams wide open in the corner, Vlad late in closing.  Someone screwed up there.

4:40- Timeout Lakers, up 73-71.  Not a good quarter at all thus far for LAL.  Almost every possession has been a struggle in one way or another.  Not a lot of flow, and as a result, all but two of their seven point lead has evaporated.  On the other end, they're trying to put some pressure on the ball handlers for Utah, but the rotations haven't quite been as sharp and as a result the Jazz have had some good looks.  They've actually missed a few.

This has turned back into a grind it out sort of affair, the Jazz have done a good job putting pressure on Gasol in the post, bringing doubles and triples.  The Lakers need to do a better job of providing him an outlet, and Gasol needs to get rid of the ball faster.

3:55- Kobe goes strong to the hole and draws Okur's third foul. That's the first one of those he's had all night.

2:41- Timeout Utah, LA up 75-73.  As a group, they're just out of sorts.  This is something that worried me a little going in- it's not that Kobe is hurt, but since with a back injury, things can change almost minute to minute, it seems like the Lakers are just unsure of what they're doing.  Kobe is working as hard as he can, but he's clearly limited and has had trouble sustaining any aggressive play.

The Jazz have clamped down on Gasol, and aren't giving him the sort of space he had in the first quarter to distribute from the post.

LO, it's worth noting, is playing a monster game on the defensive end.  Strong rotations, contesting shots near the basket.  Overall, he's got 15/10 and a pair of blocks.

1:58- Kobe gets the ball at the top of the three point line, and immediately tries to take Harpring to the hole.  He gets fouled on the first step to earn some FTs.  Over the last few minutes, he's started to become more aggressive offensively, trying to make his way to the hole.  He knows he can beat Harpring off the dribble, even at 70%.

1:34- The Lakers clear out the right side, isolating Kobe on Harpring, and again he blows by him, drawing the and-one on Boozer.  He makes the FT and the Lakers are up by 4, 81-77.

1:19- Walton sends Harpring to the line, losing him on the inbound and having to grab him on the way by.  Not a good foul.  Walton is struggling a little tonight, for sure.

Another great play by LO, drawing the charge on Millsap.  That's his fourth.

END OF THE THIRD: 81-81.

A bad Q for LA, who lose all of the seven-point lead they had at halftime. They only scored 20 points, and were completely shut out on the inside.  Gasol, who had 15/4/6 at the break, finished the quarter with...  15/4/6.  Unless Kobe can find more burst to drive and kick, they're going to have to figure out ways to loosen him up, post up 24, get LO down low, etc.  They can't continue to be a perimeter team.

AK will have what surely will be an exciting fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

8:38 - Farmar's successful drive to the hole caps a couple of minutes with nice sequences for two guys who could desperately use them.  Jordan himself and Walton.  Farmar with the and-one drive (converted) and Walton over the previous 30 seconds, where his defensive, then offensive rebounds help set up Gasol for a bucket.

7:46 - Back-to-back good plays for LO coming while heading to the rim.  First, drawing the foul while backing down Harpring (his fourth), then on a dunk, set up nicely by Kobe.

6:53 - AK-47 bails out a streaking-off-the-defensive-rebound-and-dribbling-kind- out-of-control-Sasha by fouling him just as he might have lost the ball out of bounds.  The gift is converted into a pair of freebies, both successful.

6:13 - Nice give and go between LO and Gasol.  Odom, spread out wide along with his teammates, dumps the ball inside to Pau, who immediately hits the streaking passer with the ball before the far spaced D can react.  That's 20 for Lamar, who's having himself a big time game on both ends of the floor.

4:29 - Gasol does his part to stop a driving D.Will, rotating over to swat the point guard's layup.  Unortunately, the ball ends up in Boozer's hand, who ends up getting to the line at LO's expense.  But he only sinks one of them, making the overall sequence play out in L.A.'s favor.

2:43 - It's nice having Utah in the penalty, especially when a foul by Williams away from the ball sends an excellent free throw shooter like Fish to the line.  Both go down.

2:41 - I'm too far away from the action to know exactly what Sasha said just now to get that T, but if it was anything to a ref, I guarantee it wasn't anything important enough not to keep inside.  If, however, he was just trashtalking with Korver, then I have to wonder why the ref can't let that go.  Granted, Sasha could have been a little more aware of the ref being right next to him, but I don't see why it necessarily needs to be a criminal matter.

20.5 - Two big buckets from Gasol help create five points' worth of distance between the Lakers and Utah.  The second comes off his snag of Sasha's errant three ball.  BK thinks he shoved Okur to track down the loose ball.  I think Mehmet was doing a bit of thespian work selling it.  Either way, it's two points and we'll take both of them.

3.3 - With Kobe at the line, a foul is switched onto Kirilenko, which means a DQ and a trip to the pine.  For those keeping score, that would be his fourth foul out of the series.  I know it's tough guarding Kobe and LO all game, but that's gotta be discouraging.  Or it's totally cool, because he just believes in the notion that you can't take any home with you.

The clock winds down on a 111-104 Laker victory.  A rough third quarter may have prompted some well bitten nails, but a strong surge on both sides of the ball helped create enough space to put this one away for the good guys.  More to come in a bit.  Thanks for dropping by.

Somebody ask Pau about the "SPAIN" walk..

Whenever Pau makes a great play, he walks real tall down the middle of the floor with this glare on his face that says "yea ... that is right... i am the man"

I am extremely pleased with this win. Not because the Lakers played their best. I'm pleased that they won it not at their best.

The good: Kobe didn't force anything. VladRad came out of his slump. So did Farmar. Most of all, Lamar Odom was awesome.

Otherwise: Gasol's stats were good, but his overall game was mediocre. Walton struggled. Sasha struggled.

When we win a game with too many turnovers and too many Utah rebounds, it bodes well. Whether it was Rev. Fatty's prayer (or Utzworld's), or the arrival of my Kobe MVP t-shirt, or just playing on our home court, a "W" is a "W." Go Lakers!

GOOOOOOOOOO LAKERS GOOOOOOO GASOOOOL

Phred,

This drinks for you AND THE LAAAAAAAaaaaKKKKKEEEEEeeEEERRRSSSS!!!!!

GO LAKERS!!!

Good things happen when we end games with Sasha, Kobe, LO, Pau, Fish.

Go 5! Go Lakers!

Mabuhay Faith! Kamusta Kabayan?

I did not see the game on live TV...i was just following the boxscore thru yahoo but I noticed sasha missed a at least three 3-pt attempts in the last 2 mins of the game...

personally, i'm not very confident when sasha is in during end of games...

Fantastic! Can I get a woah Bundy?

Nice job Lakers for holding it down on homecourt,I'm going to sleep good tonight. Too bad no tacos for the fans. Now it's time to close it out on Friday

Forgot to give a shout out to Pau's play tonight , allthough his defense and rebounding have been below par these last 3 games he manned up at critical time in 4th and helped us put it away.... He's growing/learning. It's easy to forget though the guy's never been this deep in the playoffs ever..... I';m glad he's getting his chance....

jhnlannery,

You are entitled to your opinion, just as long as your heart says . . .

GOOOOoooooOOOOOOOOOO LAKERS!!!!!

DAMN THAT WIN WAS BIG
Pau-way to show up big in the last few minutes big fella. but whats with the through the legs show time dribbling 15 feet from the bucket?
Lamar-sorry I ever doubted you big guy
FIsh-Gritty gritty game
Vlade-thanks for the contribution early...better early than never
Luke-play within yourself and you'll be fine
Jordan-if you cant guard dwill, dont show it...and attack his ass on the other end, you're just as quick as him.
Sasha- DAMN you got bailed out with this win...Dont talk shit like that right in front of a ref! (but i still love your never back down mentality)
KB24-never acted like there was a doubt. champ. though i wouldnt mind seeing ball hog kobe the last minute or two of the game. but maybe its the back?
3-2...let's end it friday fellas.
by the way...Deron Williams scares the shit out of me.

FARMAR is treading on thin ice for his job.
HE won't fool me this summer.

Vujacic, no more tech's.
YOU're a foot from being out of the league. You better play like it.
WhERE IS RONNIE TURIAF?

Like I said, Kobe may not be the best at in-game adjustments, but I trust he will make the correct adjustment in between games.

Kobe has a high basketball IQ, and makes good decisions.

Loving the new aggressive Lamar. About time.

The Matt Harpring-Luke Walton matchup cracks me up. It's like watching two slow old dudes at the Y duke it out.

Matt Harpring is a living, breathing foul.

WOW SASHA TOOK MORE SHOTS THAN KOBE. 1 of 11

how do u rate kobe's game

?????????????????????????????????????

THIS IS THE GAME HE NEEDS TO PLAY IN GAME 6 TOO.

LAMAR, PAU, FISHER, AND VUJACIC CAN PLAY ENOUGH TO BEAT THE JAZZ IN SALT LAKE. ALL KOBE NEEDS TO DO IS ATTACK THE PAINT AND DISH TO THE OPEN MAN JUST LIKE HE WAS DOING IN THE 4TH QUARTER.

THE JAZZ CAN'T BEAT THE LAKERS BECAUSE BOOZER CAN'T HANDLE LAMAR OR PAU.

Can we delete JohnnyP's post. It broke the page formatting.

Korey,

Everyone misses an assignment. I hate it, but it happens. But here's the thing about this laker team, which one would you rather frustrate us? Luke (wise decisions?), Vlad (inconsistent) or Sasha with his full on effort, whom also makes Kobe a 3, better for his boards?

It was a "good game" could have been better but wins are the most important.

GO Lakers!

Chances that the Lakers win on Friday is 1/2

Chances that the Lakers win on Friday if they are completely utterly FOCUSED and feeling really GOOD is 100%. If Kobe can be in the Zone on friday the Lakers will win on Friday.

I THINK KOBE WILL BE IN THE ZONE ON FRIDAY. HE WILL START TO PREPARE MENTALLY NOT PHYSCIALLY 5 HOURS BEFORE TIP OFF. HE WILL FOCUS FOR 3 HOURS NONSTOP PRIOR. THIS WIN WILL SHOW WHO IS COMPLETLY FOCUSED. IT'S A LOT OF HARD WORK TO PREPARE MENTALLY. BUT IF YOU ARE MENTALLY READY YOU WON'T HEAR THE CROWD. THE WORK DONE BEFORE THE GAME WILL DECIDE THE WINNER... I REALLLY REALLY HOPE ITS THE LAKERS WHO WILL PREPARE MORE. IF 3'S START TO FALL EARLY IN THIS ARENA THERE WAS PREPARATION. IF 3'S DON'T FALL EARLY THAT PERSON MUST DO OTHER THINGS TO HELP WIN...........

LAKER NATION CANNOT WAIT. I HATE THE JAZZ!!!!!!

GO LAKERS. The team out there to finish out the game was perfect.

Korey,

Yeah Sasha got a Bad tech for taunting.. But as a ref you cant make that call in a Important Game 5. That was a horrible call

A fricken remarkable game.

The Jazz played us tough and we were the strongest in the end.

A great game.

Didn't I tell you that Fisher, Kobe, Lamar, and Rad Vlad would be the difference?

Too bad I forgot to mention that Pau Gasol guy.

GO LAKERS!

lakers won, woohoow.
i wanna crush memo okur's head. damn it. fugly okur amp.

What a game - now we need to get ready for Friday. Can't celebrate yet, right??!!

Kobe - rest your back. I don't care if you "only" take 10 shots next game. We need you to play like you did tonight & we are unbeatable - unstopable - rolling onward to June!

Pau - do some squats or something & get a stronger base. This guy may be a bit "soft" as we say, but seriously - he showed his heart tonight! More of the same is needed!

LO - what can we say?? A game like this really shows us what this guy can do. He is the swiss army knife out there slashing to the hole - the windex man cleaning up the glass - there is NO WAY he's going anywhere - LAKER FOR LIFE right there.

Sasha - I want him to keep shooting. I don't care if he misses a few. PJ left him in the game & Kobe kept dishing to him - he's got to take those shots every time. He'll come through - don't worry. My only problem is with the IDIOT announcers saying he gave "the machine" nickname to himself. Jeez - how many times has it been said that it was Stu & Joel who came up with that? What a bunch of tools.

Lukomir Waltmanovic - we need Vlad to be pumped like that AND play some D. Luke? Who knows what happened to him tonight....hope I see the real Luke on Friday. This guy was his evil twin.

Rest of team - get excited! Cheer! Be contributing in whatever way you can to win on Friday! I'd like to see Ronny get in the game more & a Trevor Ariza sighting would be awesome, but not really seeing that happen until next series. I would really love to see the REAL bench mob back Friday!

This is the most fun we've had in years! This team has exceeded my expectations from the beginning of the year, and now is living up to them!

What a GREAT time to be a Laker fan!

GO LAKERS!

That finger roll by Vlad was pretty nice. I wouldn't mind seeing him take it to the basket more often. Not necessarily to pull a Gervin, but just as a way to keep D's more hinest on him.

Vlade has been doing this for a while now. Should watch him more and critique less.

Wow! Great win tonight! That was a good game.

What's amazing is the fact that Kobe didn't take a single shot in the entire 4th quarter...instead dishing it off to the open man...and we still won. Some timely offensive rebounds & clutch D helped to seal the win in that 4th as well. Kobe is definitely showing his trust in his teammates. If Sasha would've hit those open 3's, the game would've been a blow out though.

Faith wrote: "Good things happen when we end games with Sasha, Kobe, LO, Pau, Fish."

I agree with you. I like Sasha in their late. I like his defensive tenacity. (Although, next time he starts yapping at Korver, he should do it in Slovene, so he doesn't get a T. If the referees don't know what the heck you're saying, they can't T you up.) I like Fisher's veteran leadership & how he defends D. Williams. I like the length & abilities of LO & Pau. And Kobe is Kobe...one of the most explosive & skilled players in the game. Those 5 can all shoot the ball well.

A win in Utah on Friday is doable if the Lakers play Lakers basketball. If they ratchet up the defensive pressure, make their rotations, hit their shots, and take care of the ball, then they'll take it in 6.

GO LAKERS!!!

ATT sucks, 5 minutes left and broadcast freezes up.

I still think , given a year or two of tough playoffs experiences , Sasha can become pretty reliable shooter. He is already a good defender and he tries and hustles , fighting the opponent , the screen , the refs and everybody else for that matter.
Kobe has shown real maturity tonight by distributing in the end as opposed to doing that has ultimately led to the defeat i the OT in Utah

Great game today. Kobe setting up his teamates for easy look. Sasha did a good job against korver except the T.

Post game prayer.

Thanks for the win.
Lord that feels good!

Glad you are on our side.

Amen

This is in response to calling LO the second option. I like to say it, and Barkley has said it, too, that somehow being the THIRD option makes Odom one of the best power forwards in the NBA. His stats since Pau arrived have been scary. About 17 points, almost 12 rebounds and shooting 60%, which are all-star starter numbers.

I also think some people are a liitle too hard on Farmar. Check out the job Williams does on CP3 when they met during the regular season, especially in the games at Utah. I'm starting to think that when D-Will breaks down the first defender that defender should just run to the other basket and try and get a quick score off the inbounds pass.

Phred,

This drinks for you AND THE LAAAAAAAaaaaKKKKKEEEEEeeEEERRRSSSS!!!!!

GO LAKERS!!!

got my own, thanks, after about 6 minutes into the 3rd. No Courvasier, though. Not even Hennessy. I'm jealous.
I swear, if the Lakers win it all, I will find a way to be walking down Sunset and then all the way to Figueroa with some fine Cognac. I will even manage to get drunk off that shite. Don't know how, but I will find a way to make it happen. Grants accepted, of course.

Starting to feel like Pau is a liability down om the block, but never the less good hard fought win. Love it.
Way to step up Lakers. I hope I don't have a hangover tomorrow, almost got in a fight at a bar backing up the Lakers against some Laker haters, Not even jazz fans, just Laker haters.

Don't care, had enough back up and we came up at the end.

That finger roll by Vlad was pretty nice. I wouldn't mind seeing him take it to the basket more often. Not necessarily to pull a Gervin, but just as a way to keep D's more hinest on him.

Vlad is almost starting to remind me of Devean George. For about 40- 60 seconds every game he is unguardable, and then drops back into obscurity. It's the potential that's the most frustrating. But we won with george, we can win with Vlad, but neither will be a big part of the team. I like that we can win with the parts we have now and then turn around, add bynum, ariza (maybe) and a good FA PG, and then try again. A very Bulls/Spurs approach to building a dynasty. I'm still wondering about who we could try for in terms of FA PGs, I hope Mitch doesn't turn into a one hit wonder. not too many options, but somebody could give us something, without us giving anything up, which, as Carl Spackler would say; ''is nice.''

couple thoughts:

get the feeling that LO's head is improving significantly with every game. perfect from the line---has Lamar EVER done that? He has absolutely proven he deserves the 14 mil (or so) that he'll be earning next year.

As usual, Luke was entirely too inconsistent for my taste yet gets praised endlessly by Doug. I just don't see it. As we've said over and over, he's not athletic enough to put his supposedly great bball IQ to good use.

Long term, what is happenening to Farmar is going to be GREAT for him. Give him humility, something to aspire too and will force him to dig deep + work on his defense.

Fish---what a leader. I just have a tremendous amount of respect fo rthe qualities he brings to a basketball team.

Also spread was 8 on the game no? Kobe missed that FT at the end making the margin of victory 7. Too bad the gambling Lakes fan didn;t get bailed out of that one. Night

Go Lakers!!! Just watching the fsn interview with Kobe saying that Derek Fisher could run for governor of California one day.. Hey he gets my vote.
Great game by KObe who i believe did not take one shot in the 4th. There was a point were I thought he would try to take over after Sasha missed another 3. But he showed patience and trust in his team and continued to let the team win.

Great game by Odom who I have seen dribble the ball more to his right hand when going to the hoop. I never saw him do this last year or so much this year. Finishing Strong tonight with a couple of dunks and was perfect from the line if im not mistaken.

I think we will win it in Utah as hard as I know it will be. They need to win it. I know they can still win in LA in 7 but winning on the road especially in Utah, would really send a message to the league. Plus you know New Orleans is gonna need 7 to win the series and an extra couple days rest would mean a lot.

BEFORE I GO CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG BUT DIDN'T KOBE GIVE HIMSELF THE MAMBA NICKNAME? Just wondering cuz everybodys been hating on Sasha for calling himself the Machine even though the name was given to him.

Vujacic is a different player. But tonight he didn't do anything too great. Maybe next game. I'm sure next game will be big for this cat. I like the kid.

I said it at the beginning of the series:

Boozer will get marginalized by our D, but Williams will go off a bit.

Williams is legit. This kid is really amazing. And he's giving me a frikin heart attack almost every night.

Who cares about this weak courtside analysis.

this gimmick is barely good enough to get the Times to pay for your season passes.

thank god this blog is free

That was the most unsatisfying win so far. I thought we really got the shaft in Utah with some of the officiating but man, we got away with a lot tonight. Pau completely pushed off on that critical putback. In fact, he shoulda been called for a charge earlier in the game when he slow-moed up to the basket for a lay-in against harping. We got some cheesy fouls for Derek Fisher. There was no foul on AK when sasha was dribbling up the court against him and just lost the dribble and stumbled. It was ridiculous....almost all the calls went to the Lakers. I'm glad we won tonight but man, we didn't deserve to win. And if Kobe isn't better by Friday, man, we're not gonna take game 6.

Fire32,

What are you doing almost getting in a fight by supporting the Lakers?

GO LAKERS!

That finger roll by Vlad was pretty nice. I wouldn't mind seeing him take it to the basket more often. Not necessarily to pull a Gervin, but just as a way to keep D's more hinest on him.

Vlade has been doing this for a while now. Should watch him more and critique less.

I don't see the Devean Geogege comparison. George was not as good a 3 point shooter but was better defender. I think VR can be better defender if he puts more energy into his game. I don't like how he keeps his hands down until shot is taken. He should have hands up on D all the time and run out faster to close on shooter. He reacts too slow.

But I like his shooting, passing dives and drives and should work with Kareem to improve post up game. All players are big part of team as each is needed to excel at their role. If you are trying to say he will not be the featured star player then yes, he will not be.

We need an experienced pg younger than Fish, older than Farmar and taller than both. One that can play defense and be able to drive and score or dish. Farmar then be developed more slowly. I don't know who is available but I think that would be priority one.

Thats my opinion and I stick by it.

Sasha was just proposing for a date with Korver and the referee thought it was taunting. Sasha was questioning the call: "Why will I taunt a handsome alien? lol!
