Kickin' it

May 1, 2008 |  9:48 am

The purple and gold were back to work on Wednesday but still lack an opponent.  That's fine with Phil Jackson and his squad, as they're more than happy to let the Jazz and Rockets beat each other up to the point that both teams would arrive in Round 2 as walking wounded:

"I'm hoping that the Utah-Houston series goes seven games and maybe like three overtimes," forward Lamar Odom said. "Our job is done as far as the first round and we want to see these teams battle each other, beat each other up. And then we'll be ready for them."

Take that to mean they'll take rest over rust any day.  Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Derek Fisher got just that, sitting out what what was a feisty five-on-five scrimmage in El Segundo.  At least they know the schedule.  If the Jazz wins on Friday to close out the Rockets, Utah will be in LA on Sunday for Game 1.  Should the series go seven, Round 2 will begin Tuesday.  Fisher would just as soon see the Jazz.

Again, the question is raised: What exactly did LA's sweep of Denver prove?

Fisher, president of the NBA Player's Assn., said Wednesday that he doesn't have a problem with the "menacing gesture" fines received by Boston's Paul Pierce and Washington's DeShawn Stevenson.

Not surprisingly, with the Lakers on hiatus, Avery Johnson gone, and Mike D'Antoni rumored to be on his way out, most of the news centers on what's going on around the conference.  First, don't look for D'Antoni to land in Dallas should he find his way out of Phoenix.  Too many potential issues there, from D'Antoni looking more to Chicago, to Dallas needing a coach with more of a defensive bend.  The Mavericks will also need someone who can make Jason Kidd comfortable, which never happened with Johnson.

Like every other coach on the planet, Avery's name lands on the list of potential coaches in New York.   And Chicago.

Meanwhile in Phoenix, they're going to talk things over.

Scroll down to read one reason why we like AI.

It hasn't been all that long since Dennis Rodman was last arrested, but that time period is appparently too long for Rodman's liking.

I've scrolled over every post longer than 5 lines for years but if Mamba 24 banishes himself due to unpopular demand I'mo paste my recently completed "Big Body Theory" on each thread. The bibliography is every post Mike T wrote.

Stay Mamba
GO Lakers

Mamba24, you have my support my blog friend. You are like the Lakers to the Los Angeles. We may all be different, but you bring us together.

Don't leave us!!

The Nuggets would've won at least ONE game in these playoffs against any of the other WC teams outside of the Lakers. The Laker were just a bad matchup for the Nuggets and clearly had the Nuggets number this year like the Warriors had the Mavs number last year. I predict the Lakers to beat the Jazz(I think the Jazz will beat the Rockets tomorrow night in game 6)in 5 games with the Jazz possibly winning 1 game in Utah. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Lakers sweep the Jazz, especially if the Lakers win the first two at Staples.

Mamba24, keep up the good work of keeping the blog together in a very, very positive way. You bring nothing but Gospel to this Laker family!!! Lakers all day, everday!!!

but anyway , the roll call is much much shorter than it used to be.. so i just kinda got used to it.. >_>;

LakerTom,

After Xodus posted the link to remind us of Bynum on this off day I got to thinking how good we could be when he gets back, where he'll fit in, how will he work with Gasol, etc. and then I realized this.

Yes, Bynum was developing some post moves and we were starting to see him use some drop steps, baby hooks, etc. around the hoop, but the majority of his buckets came on lobs and put backs. Now, that being said, I can very easily see him getting 15 shots a game with said put backs and a few plays run through him. Due to the fact the dude was hitting about 60% of his field goals, that equates to 18 points a game.

Now, where I truly believe we still miss Bynum, even with us sweeping the Nuggets, is defense and rebounding. It's obvious, there is a hole there. I feel that's safe to say that Drew could average 12 boards and 3 blocks a game next year, if that remains his focus.

So, it wouldn't be far fetched to see him average 16-12-3, now would it? And it would all come off of him playing off the ball for the most part. Kind of like a taller, younger Elton Brand.

Holy crap that rules!!!

Mamba24,

Do not leave. You provide a great sense of community here and you are a major factor in the success of the blog.

If I check in on this blog tomorrow and no Roll Call is posted, heads are going roll. Fo shizzle.

Keep up the good work.

Fairweather Fatty,

Thanks for the reply! Mark Madsen is being punished for his dance moves. He is with the Timber wolves!

Edwin Gueco,

I hear what you're saying. I was just having fun and teasing Mamba24 and the bloggers for their daily lovefest. Plus I'm pretty bored here at work. Sometimes the chatter is not about the Lakers, and I feel like dumping a giant beer can on some of the bloggers when the conversation goes as follows:

Blogger A: You're the best.
Blogger B: No, you're even better.
Blogger A: I love you dude!
Blogger B: No, I love you more dude!

I would never ask Mamba24 to stop posting, as I am a fan of his posts. My post was intended to get a laugh (although unsuccessful), not to offend.

justanothermambafan

you are very mistaken. I am not and never have been a Mamba hater. Quite the contrary!

hey Edwin good to see you...

petrols pricey here in the UK I dont deal in gallons really but I reckon its about a third more expensive here than the US roughly...good to see you know your history as well as your ball...they dont play the playoffs live but betwen sky,the internet and the odd delayed coverage game I do ok...the biggest problem is the time difference.Im going to be a zombie by the the time this is over...oh yes I'll feel some self hatred if I start rooting against the lakers just to get some sleep!
great blogging job fella...

#4,

Thanks for the reply homie!

I think if we keep this going it will drive the naysayers crazy & they'll leave to commiserate with MikeT somewhere & we will then be free to carry on with our beloved ROLL CALL and Mamba24's excellent, fun, entertaining posts!

GO LAKERS!

COME BACK MAMBA24!!!!!!!!!!

Fatty...

If you wanna come up i'll give you my email adress and show you round...serious we'll sink some pints and talk lakers...you gotta promise not to behave like your long lost ancestors though...but trying to talk the English coppers into bailing my American blogmates out of jail for raping and pillaging would be pushing the limits of the blog brotherhood...if you do want to get out of London to York or anywhere else take a train but book online early or it gets pricey...

Andrew Z,

I was thinking he could average about 16, 12 and 3 next season, as well. I seem getting more like 12-14 shots a game next season, but if he's shooting 60% from the field and roughly 70% from the line, 16 a night is reasonable.

Am I crazy to think we can challenge 70 wins next season? lol

Giantsquid - the list is for all those who say BITE ME to those who would want Mamba24 to stop posting!!!

giantsquid,

Glad we can disagree without being disagreeable. It’s funny but in answering your first post I also pulled up a list of the top 50 players. LOL. I also noticed that I only had two point guard on my list, too, and that I left out several point guards on the top 50 list. (Big O was also more of a combo guard) Maybe, I need to change my statement to refer to centers only but as a former point guard I must resist that point of view to the death. lol.

What we probably agree upon is that historically centers were the bedrock upon which you build a championship but that in the current era there are fewer great center prospects which has allowed great players at other positions – primarily still guards rather than forwards – to also become franchise players. Is that something you could agree with?

Now as to the list of players from whom to pick a franchise starter, here again is my list:

Magic Johnson – G.O.A.T.
Oscar Robertson – Averaged a Triple Double.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – Multiple Championship Center
Wilt Chamberlain – Multiple Championship Center
Shaquille O’Neal – Multiple Championship Center
Bill Russell – Multiple Championship Center
Bill Walton – Multiple Championship Center (counting UCLA)
Hakeem Olajuwon – Multiple Championship Center

If I understand, you would add the following players to that list. Bird is the only one I would consider in the level as my list. The others are great players but you would never take one of them over any of the guys on my list IMHO.

Elgin Baylor – Never won championship.
Larry Bird – Best forward ever to play game
Tim Duncan – Overrated in my book
LeBron James – Will never win a title.
Kevin Garnett – Overrated in my book.
Chris Paul – Best potential at point guard

If I understand, here is your list of potential franchise players, of which only Paul, Howard, Oden, and Bynum have any real potential to be true franchise players. Hmm, 1 point guard and 3 centers. In fact, most of these guys on your list are clearly just STAR players and not SUPERSTARS. OK, I admit I am biased against LeBron.

Kevin Garnett – Now has a 1-year window due to Bynum injury
Tim Duncan – Probably played in last NBA Finals
LeBron James – Will never win a title
Chris Paul – Best potential at point guard
Deron Williams – Good but not John Stockton
Josh Smith – Wouldn’t be on my list for anything.
Dwight Howard – Second best center prospect right now
Amare Stoudemire – Will never win a title.
Greg Oden – Will not be as good as Bynum
Andrew Bynum – Will be the next great Lakers center.
Tony Parker – Not a franchise player.
Chris Bosh – Not a franchise player.
Manu Ginobilli – Not a franchise player.
Kevin Durant – Not a franchise player.
Al Horford – Not a franchise player.
Dwayne Wade – Not a franchise player.
Carmello Anthony – Not a franchise player.
David West – Not a franchise player.
Dirk Nowitzki – Not a franchise player.
Al Jefferson – Not a franchise player.
Brandon Roy – Not a franchise player.
LaMarcus Aldridge – Not a franchise player.
Caron Butler – Not a franchise player.
Chauncy Billups – Not a franchise player.
Carlos Boozer – Not a franchise player.
Pau Gasol – Not a franchise player.

MAMBA24 - COME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AZ:

Jesus, AZ. Can’t you give your GHE mate Ex a little support on his honored day. You sound so damn…well, so damn GHF that I have to wonder if it is really you. LOL.

The only downside to all of this is that the Lakers will be so heavily favored from now on it won’t be worth betting on them. A 20-year old center who combines the raw power and awe of Shaq at his prime with the basketball intelligence and sheer grace of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at his best. A player who is going to set records for playing above the rim before he is done playing. The Lakers are blessed to get their next franchise player while their current franchise player is still in his prime. Holy crap! Resistance is futile. LOL.

Tom

LakerTom

I'm addressing this off-topic post to you because:

1) I respect your opinion (sorry LAKER TRUTH looking for trouble here!)
2) These questions have been in the back of my mind for a while now, and
3) You tend to answer my posts.

When Don Nelson pulled Baron Davis in the 2nd half of the Warriors last game, I wondered whether he was doing it because 1) he knew the Warriors had no chance against the Lakers (or any of the top 4 teams) in the playoffs and 2) he wanted a lottery pick. Kevin Love might be a good fit with a run and gun team. Great outlet passes, good rebounder, and he seems to have a 3pt shot.

My second question is what do you think about the Lakers bringing Gerald Greene into camp next year. I think that he may be salvageable and he has a lot of potential.

Laker Truth,

Hey man. All butta. It's funny last week I was up against a multi poster. Then Edwin Gueco had his tussle. Now it is Mamba24' turn. It's just like that during Non-playing days. We are just like the Lakers pre 2007-2008 season.

Giant blog personalities. Kobe vs Shaq vs Mitch vs Jerry vs 18 year old Platinum diggers vs Malone vs Kobe's wife vs Sacto vs Payton vs PJ vs Rudy T. vs a bottle of Maker's Mark vs Tempura vs Ruth Chris vs Morton steaks...

Another comparison would be like the VH1 channel. Great Discography's about the Start of Metal from the British Steel Era, to the Hip-hop Don't Stop transitory phases from Poverty and Desolation and now the Urban Metrosexuality and money first business theory. But sometimes, you have your whack Trans gender looking "Tila Tequila" and "Flavor of Love" Episodes. Any sophisticated blog without in fighting and affirmed exchange of opinion well, would not be a sophisticated blog.

Idle minds are the blogs playground. Frankly, come game time, the next show will be "Bands Reunited."

Mamba24, I ask you to come back....because the keys you handed me won't open the gates....it has to be YOU.

FYI, this will be the 3rd time ever Mamba 24 has gone fishing in Upstate NY again in disgust. First time was during KL months and Fatty left the blog and so many others. It took 2 weeks to let his anger vanish. I guess every jolly person has the sad part on the other side, they are sensitive on little things when people say they are not really funny. The second time Mamba 24 asked to be excused when his Mom a couple of months ago, we devoted a thread for him prayers of condolences. In a way, our blog entertainer is stil in mourning and this is just one of the outlets to poke fun with Charles, Justambalakerfan, and everyone here, unfortunately, this will be the 3rd time by honoring EX. Lo and behold, exhelodrvr you got what you wished for - accentuate the negative for the next 24 hours. If Mamba 24 does not return tomorrow that is the most NEGATIVE thing that happened today. It is called intolerance and impatience spoiled the fun.

I guess we just have to wait and see. With regards to long posts, will anyone beat Mike T. or JJ we used to read novels, in the case of Mamba24 only anonymous names, what makes it so obnoxious when all those names are assumed ones?

To Mamba and our 'Lakers Band of Bloggers':

Last year, I left the blog (or Borg) because the Spamming Trolls had made this, not a very nice place to be. From time to time, I would check in, and this is what I would see.

.............., Charles, Edwin Gueco, Tsiry, FATTY, AngryLaker
Tha Show, Tim-4-Show, TheLakeShow, Generic_One, Pig Mille...............

This told me, that even if I was not here, I was still part of the blog, and one person had faith that I and others would be back.

The Roll Call means different things to different people. For me it means we are all 'one community', with one common denominator. We want to see our favorite Franchise, the Lakers succeed.

Mamba, Larry. Don't be embarrassed by all the attention your friends are giving you.

Wake up tomorrow, say your prayers, take a deep breath, and just be Mamba.

I'll see you on the blog.

Fatty (John)

Mamba24,

Every day I scroll through the list to see if my name has made the rollcall or not. I LOVE IT!!! If you leave this blog will be under a permanent dark cloud for me. I'll never forgive JRWeatherman. He won't care, he only thinks about what he wants. But whenever I see his name I'll remember what used to be and his hatred and it will ruin my enjoyment.

Check the posts, many support you. Only like two are against you. Kobe would not quit were he heckled by two a-holes (put me on the "they can bite me" band wagon.")

We do not need to ruin the enjoyment of sooooo many supporters to satisfy the crotchityness of just a few miserable people who only think about themselves and do not even want to have to scroll past things if it means others will be happy.

I reaaaaaallly hope that when I check into this blog tomorrow there is a roll call for me to see if my name is in. In fact, if you come out and play tomorrow it will be nearly as glorious as a Lakers playoff victory for me.

I truly believe that if you post tomorrow, the haters will stop being a-holes and learn how to scroll.

As much as I pray for the Lakers, I ask you to please be there for us tomorrow.

GO LAKERS!!!!

I think that Mamba24 should have a little thicker skin. I mean, come on. I've been attacked hundreds of times over the last three years.

Michael Teniente was probably attacked THOUSANDS of times before he left.

Not everyone's going to like what everyone else has to say. It's part of life.

Mamba24 is (and deservedly so) one of the most popular bloggers in Laker Nation. He should just brush off a little criticism and not be so reactionary.

GO LAKERS!

We need a freaking Laker game to be played already.

God bless the dude, but if I see Mamba24's name in one more post I am gonna scream.

(Looks up at his own post)
Oh Gawd, there it is again.

:(

Hey, Squid,

Funny take/question on the Warriors possibly tanking to get Kevin Love.

While that's a stretch, it's not a bad fit at all! And he may actually slide to them too (which a lot of teams would later regret, I will predict).

Mamba,

You not only have to come back immediately TO LOUD CHEERS IN THE ARENA for the LAKERS!!! You have to do so for all of humanity.

Remember the expression when the Nazi's took over. First they came for the long bloggers, and I did nothing because I was not a long blogger. Then they came for the negative bloggers . . . . When they came for me there was no one left to help.

Tomorrow I'll know all will be right in Lakers land when I see your roll call!!

COME ON TEAM!!!!!!!

LakerTom,

It's pretty presumptuous to assume that Lebron and Amare will NEVER win a title. lol

And Tim Duncan is overrated? 4 rings, two MVPs and three Finals MVPs don't do it for you? You could make an argument that he's had a better career than Shaq (who at his best was more dominant, though), who has always had a great guard at his side when he's made it to the finals or won it all.

And Shaq was one win in Game 4 in the Spurs series from being swept out of the playoffs for the 7TH TIME in his career.

charles damn good post

Off topic, but what is really the deal with that "I Am A Celtic" crap NBATV keeps running??

Yes, Mamba24

See the support you get from this blog "BITE ME" bandwagon. Everybody is coming back to report, Kiwi is one she blogs all the way to England, AZ is here, supposed to be a babysitter but because of his buddy as the honoree, he is here so is Weave-man I thought he was buried in the snow, he's back!. We will round them up so please come back. (Mike T and Jorema are on the corner about to come back.)

MAMBA24 came from the original Mamba and Mamba never QUITS. You are the winner of the MVB, the winner never QUITS. Report for tomorrow or else we have no representation at the MVP Award ceremonies next week.

By court order, GET BACK, abandoning your post on the blog is classified as misdemeanor. LOL!

"I feel exactly as you do about Drew. “ANYWHERE around the hoop!” Seriously, ANYWHERE. Drew has the best and softest pair of hands I have ever seen on a big" -Laker Tom

Thats the point I was trying to make in another thread that Ex, you and I were discussing Tom. The hands, coupled with the footwork and body positioning Kareem has taught him, make Drew not only a "finesse" player but when allowed to run the floor and "freestyle" for lack of a better term, you see the power part of his game as well.. I mean when the kid is throwin his lobs or dunks down, you just KNOW they wont get blocked !!!! So the point I was trying to make to Ex is... Bynum is a very dangerous hybrid in the mold of a DHoward whereas, he has BOTH a Finesse and Power game and once his own personal comfort level and confidence grow... whew... watch out.. gotta give props to Lil Buss, just like when the logo plucked Kobe out of the teen wunderkinds of Bball, Jimmy is starting to look pretty smart over this choice NOW.. Oh yea.. before I forget lol

Blue Thunder - whisper mode, dude!

I hope that you're having a fantastic day!

MAMBA24 - you are one of the biggest reasons why I started posting on this blog. Keep up the fantastic work!

I'm starting the "Surprise Playoff Appearance by Andrew Bynum" bandwagon!

I feel like I'm just twiddling my thumbs with no Laker games to watch ...

Hey AK/BK,

Any new updates on bynum at all, if hes not gonna play at all why not just have a press release and say it. Are they still hoping he comes back, or do they just not want other teams to know that hes not coming back?

2k

"Your" next game is sometime in October... Our next game is probably Sunday.

Holy crap, frank1rizzo... that has to be the freakin' quote of the YEAR. LOVE IT!

Long live the Lakers! Long live Mamba24! Kobe for MVP! Resistance is futile!

LakerTom

I do think that Duncan, Elgin, and Bird all belong on your list; I didn't include the other three. Personally, I think all three have been better than either Walton of Shaq. Duncan has been on multiple championship teams as has Bird. Elgin really didn't have a chance with the talent-laden Celtic teams around.

I agree that LeBron will never win a championship:
Similar to Stockton, Malone, and Wilkens.

I think that Howard will be more dominant than Andrew. I agree that Bynum will probably be better than Oden. I actually think that D. Williams will be better than Stockton. During a career that lasted 19 years, Sloan never let John call his own plays and wasn't even a starter until his fourth season. Williams is already calling the plays in his third. Personally, I would take Williams over Paul.

I think you seriously underrate Josh Smith (along with overrating Andrew). Sixth in Defensive player of the year and probably deserved to be higher. Youngest player to have 300 blocks. Averaged almost 18 pts. per game and he's only 22. After Howard, Paul, Williams, and Drew, I think he has the most potential of the young players (I should also mention Derrick Rose), but I'm not sure he has the drive to reach that potential.

I wasn't listing players I thought would be franchise players, just those that I think are among the top players in the league at the moment. Of the players I listed, I think that Garnett (I also think he is slightly overrated but not by much), LeBron (who does not make his teammates better no matter how many assists he gets), and Duncan (who has had a better career than Shaq has had) are franchise players. I think that Williams, Paul, Howard, and Stoudemire (and possibly Wade depending on his injury status) will become franchise players and that Oden, Bynum, and Aldridge have a chance to reach that level.

It's difficult to predict which players will eventually have breakout careers. Early in their careers, no one would have predicted the careers that Stockton or Nash would end up having. We'll have to wait and see.

Blue thunder- Whisper mode.....Classic.

Not to be crass, but its kinda ironic that Jan Michael Vincent of Airwolf fame is basically in permanent whisper mode (lost his vocal cords or something).

Man, that was bad.....start the next series already before I start making more bad jokes about obscure 80's stars.

" Iam a professional writer " - Editor

Hmmmmmmm maybe A/BK can help me out on this but out of curiosity, wouldnt a professional, proof read and spell check his or her entries prior to making them available for public consumption? This ISNT my field of expertise however, if it were ME ( and mind you, I'm NOT a pro ) instead of typing " Iam a professional" blah lah blah I would've went with "I'm a professional" blah blah blah.. FYI lends more credibility to not only your post, but to your chosen profession as well.

Forgot to include Julius Erving who I think was at least as good as Walton and Shaq. (I am a Bruin: actually twice over and I love Bill. But I really can't judge him since he only really had two dominant years in the NBA before he started accumulating various serious injuries). I agree with Tex Winter on Shaq: a great player, but seriously overrated. Hakeem kicked his rear-end when he was still playing and after that he really didn't face any competition at the center position.

As far as Wade is concerned, I think his career could go either way. He could follow Penny Hardaway's path to obscurity, or he could bounce back and have a stellar career.
