Kickin' it
The purple and gold were back to work on Wednesday but still lack an opponent. That's fine with Phil Jackson and his squad, as they're more than happy to let the Jazz and Rockets beat each other up to the point that both teams would arrive in Round 2 as walking wounded:
"I'm hoping that the Utah-Houston series goes seven games and maybe like three overtimes," forward Lamar Odom said. "Our job is done as far as the first round and we want to see these teams battle each other, beat each other up. And then we'll be ready for them."
Take that to mean they'll take rest over rust any day. Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Derek Fisher got just that, sitting out what what was a feisty five-on-five scrimmage in El Segundo. At least they know the schedule. If the Jazz wins on Friday to close out the Rockets, Utah will be in LA on Sunday for Game 1. Should the series go seven, Round 2 will begin Tuesday. Fisher would just as soon see the Jazz.
Again, the question is raised: What exactly did LA's sweep of Denver prove?
Fisher, president of the NBA Player's Assn., said Wednesday that he doesn't have a problem with the "menacing gesture" fines received by Boston's Paul Pierce and Washington's DeShawn Stevenson.
Not surprisingly, with the Lakers on hiatus, Avery Johnson gone, and Mike D'Antoni rumored to be on his way out, most of the news centers on what's going on around the conference. First, don't look for D'Antoni to land in Dallas should he find his way out of Phoenix. Too many potential issues there, from D'Antoni looking more to Chicago, to Dallas needing a coach with more of a defensive bend. The Mavericks will also need someone who can make Jason Kidd comfortable, which never happened with Johnson.
Like every other coach on the planet, Avery's name lands on the list of potential coaches in New York. And Chicago.
Meanwhile in Phoenix, they're going to talk things over.

Does anyone even read TJ Simers' articles anymore?
I've banned him indefinitely, and I know that many readers swore they would do the same a while back.
AK/BK: do you guys know anything about the effect this has had on his "hits"?
Posted by: Miss Daisy | May 01, 2008 at 10:02 AM
AK/BK, did you just say they played a "five-on-five scrimmage in El Segundo?
W/Kobe, Pau and Fish sitting out practice, I guess that means both Bynum and Ariza were also not scrimmaging yet.
Doesn't sound too good, for my hopes that Ariza will be back for the Utah/Houston series to help shut down DWill/McGrady.

Got this story from over at TrueHoop:
On his website, Lamar Odom tells a funny little story about a Laker team dinner, just before the Denver series, at a high-end steakhouse.
Odom says the place can be "rather expensive," especially, you'd imagine, for a large group.
When the check came, Kobe Bryant reached out his hand for it. "As soon as he picked up the bill," says Odom, "we all started chanting 'MVP MVP MVP!'"
"I thought that was pretty funny."

Xodus,
I remember saying at the time that it was strange to see your center have a double-double by halftime and not be surprised. Drew was on a tear.
The ball movement the team had at that time was incredible and it was awesome to have a big with great hands that could finish anywhere, ANYWHERE around the hoop.
Man, can't wait for the kid to get back.
Posted by: Andrew Z | May 01, 2008 at 10:15 AM
I'd like to get Utah in the second round. I want their series to go seven, but I want the Jazz. Seeing Kobe make it personal in that last game of the year in Salt Lake City got me pumped. I'd love to see that intensity kicked up a few levels when you throw the playoffs into the picture.
There's something very amusing about the thought of Kyle Korver manning up on Kobe.
Posted by: Andrew Z | May 01, 2008 at 10:18 AM
Laker in BC-
Correct. Bynum isn't running yet, and Ariza isn't allowed to do contact activities, like full court scrimmaging. Ariza is getting there, though. He can do other hoopsy stuff.
Miss Daisy-
I really don't know what kind of numbers TJ gets online, so I don't know if they've gone up or down. Sorry.

I don't think I've ever seen a team get questioned more for a first round sweep.
Isn't that why you want the No. 1 seed? So you can beat the hell out of your first round opponent, right?

I've been out of the blog loop for a looooooonnng time. What is the latest on Bynum?
Last I heard he wasn't looking good for the playoffs, but I was hoping with the extra rest we get before this series that MAYBE he could come back for the WCF (assuming we make it, which we should).
Posted by: Weave-Man | May 01, 2008 at 10:55 AM
Xodus,
I understand why Laker fans are bristling, but I honestly think the questions come more from Denver offering so little resistance and heart than people doubting the Lakers' "credentials." Even if you went into the series thinking Denver's psyche would eventually turn sour (as I did), their lack of spirit and effort was pretty striking. If you added up all their time over four games spent playing both hard and focused, it might equal one game's worth. Game and a half, tops. Thus, I think it's valid to view the Lakers' sweep as impressive (no question it is), but also dismiss the opponent allowing it to happen.

You're Fired!
Well, the guy at the front door made me throw out the sign. :(

Thanks for the feed.
Lakers spacing was excellent.
AB was just starting to show his post moves when he got hurt.
Other teams were one and done when he played. Lakers were controlling the boards.
With Lakers offensive efficiency, reducing penetration, forcing lower percentage shots, and controlling the boards, can mean only one thing for the NBA.
The Lakers are not just contenders, but will become dominators.
We will be playing S & M basketball. It will be Sado and Masochistic what the Lakers will be doing to the rest of the NBA. The Lakers won't be satisfied with just winning. They will punish the competition.
Games on TV will be preceded with a warning. For MATURE audiences only.
The NBA wil be faced with two choices. Either create new rules to hold the Lakers back or create a new league. The NBA Elite, with the Lakers being the only member.
I know, I know, the great equalizer is injuries. But this team is becoming so good, that we laugh in the face of injuries.
AB hurt. hahaha
Ariza hurt. hahaha
Without the great AB in the line up and Gasol playing the whole game, the Lakers are winning at a .770 clip. That translates to a 71-11 reg. season.
Ok, long enough rant. I think you get the idea how Fatty feels about the now and the future Lakers.
Its a good time to be a Lakers Fan.
Posted by: Fairweather Fatty | May 01, 2008 at 10:59 AM
AK,
Yeah, I understand that. It's just that I never hear anyone say it like that. It's always that the Nuggets lacked heart. But why did they lose focus and heart? Because the Lakers were picking them apart.
Posted by: Xodus | May 01, 2008 at 11:08 AM

HOLD THE PHONE!!
Karl Malone got a 13 YR. OLD GIRL pregnant!!??
From MSNBC:
"Retired NBA “good guy” Karl Malone is the apparent no-show dad to Buffalo Bills rookie offensive tackle Demetrius Bell, whose mother was reportedly 13 when she gave birth to him. Malone was a college sophomore at Louisiana Tech at the time. The family never pressed charges and Bell didn’t know of or meet Malone until he graduated high school when the Mailman told Bell that he would need to “earn his money on his own.” Thanks, Dad. (Buffalo News)"

BK,
Thanks for connecting the dots. lol.
Posted by: mel | May 01, 2008 at 11:14 AM
Guys,
With the lack of any update regarding AB, I'm assuming they have told him to shut it down this year. I mean, the Kamenetskys and other reporters are out there in practice and no one has anything to report. I can only guess he's done.
I look at it this way -- it was a horrible injury for us. But, if he does not go down we don't get Pau. And since it's not career threatening. It will be disappointing if we lose to the Spurs or Ce- Ce ce ce celticsss (I can't get that out), but I LOVE this team long term.
And Adande shut your trap about trading AB, you're a hack.

First off, I want to say Mamba24's roll calls always fire me up. The bandwagons are fun. I appreciate Mamba's dedication and energy, and I enjoy his funny and creative poems.
However, I don't know about you guys, but this daily lovefest, otherwise known as Mamba's blogger honors, makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, in a Stuart Smiley sort of way. "You bloggers are good enough, smart enough, and dog'gone it, people like you". After all, isn't this a Laker blog? This Laker blog is slowly turning into a Dr. Phil blog. Past honorees have included notorious Laker haters, such as KL, and today's honoree is a closet Kobe hater in denial. Anyways, I apologize for crashing this lovefest, but just felt like something had to be said.
Posted by: LAKER TRUTH | May 01, 2008 at 11:15 AM
Xodus,
Well, few analysts have my gift of phrasing. haha
All kidding aside, you're right that the Lakers shredding Denver played a big part in deflating them. But at the same time, this is the same crew that fell apart at the seams against the Clips two playoffs ago. Obviously giving up. Tempers getting in the way. So it becomes easier (and in many ways, accurate) to say their meltdown has as much to do with their own makeup as anything the Lakers did. Both aspects played an important role.
AK
Posted by: Andrew Kamenetzky | May 01, 2008 at 11:16 AM
Not everyone is bristling. Some of us are wait and see mode. Hopefully, by the end of the month we'll be in the "You don't know wtf you're talking about mode".
Seriously, wait and see how the Lakers respond to the next opponent. If the team continues to play with supreme confidence (with a little help from home court advantage), then we were better than Denver was worse.

the first round shows.......lakers need to be at full strength to be able to blow out the good teams and win the close games against them. If that means the bench is stronger because bynum and ariza are there, that is exactly what is needed.

There is something strange going on on the blog today. I think we've got a strange confluence of ideas that point to some hidden blog subject matter.
First: the Karl Malone child molestation story.
Second: Mamba's nose. It's brown and the Dr's told him he's stuck with it cause He's African American.
Let's see,
African American
Brown Nose that Dr's changed to different color
Child Molestation
Look at the first letter of each of those lines: ABC.
I'd say it's easy as you and me. Today is Michael Jackson day on the blog.
Oh, and another thing, the gangster wannabe posts from recent threads. Anybody see the BAD video. What a gangster!
On a lighter note, Mamba, I'm sure that you don't even have to have a nose if you don't want one. Check on line for bad plastic surgery photos.

exhelodrvr, Congrats!
I'd go on the waiting for the next game blog is hell, but I don't think I know what that means. I mean imagine what its like for a Suns fan? : ) Put me on the I'm soooo glad we have another game to wait for bandwagon.
NOW for the question of the day: What did the Denver sweep prove? The Denver sweep did not prove as much as the last game. The last game proved that when it comes to teams that are fighting for their lives in their home arena and the game is close, we will not fold, buckle or break. We are a tough team.
GO LAKERS!!!
