Hold.... hold.... hold.....!!!
Nothing like kicking off the morning with a reasonably obscure movie reference (UPDATE: Apparently, not all that obscure. Charles got the Braveheart reference in about 10 seconds, hence the pic on the left), but that's basically what the Lakers are doing these days. Holding on until they see who they play. If Utah can hold home court and knock off the Houstons in Game 6 of their first round series tonight, then the Lakers and Jazz will open up their set on Sunday at Staples. If the Rockets push the series back to Houston... well, it's back to holding for LAL. In the meantime, they're doing their best to stay sharp, and focusing on what the Jazz and Rockets are doing to each other defensively. Both teams are strong at the point (in the case of Deron Williams of Utah, we mean that literally), both are stout inside. Penetration, either via the dribble or pass, will be a big issue no matter who the Lakers play. The Jazz is also incredibly physical, to the point that the Rockets have sent a DVD to the league office complaining about how games are being officiated.
Offensively, the Lakers are getting production from everyone on the floor, in no small part because of Kobe Bryant. It helps, too, to have a made-for-the-triangle player like Pau Gasol to keep the wheels greased.
Eric Pincus of Hoopsworld has some Bynum news, discussing some of the options remaining for him this year, and what the off-season might hold. The good news? Microfracture surgery isn't currently a concern.
In praise of Luke Walton (something not heard much over the first few months of the season).
The Knicks haven't contacted Avery Johnson yet, but he's been a busy man. Mike D'Antoni is also likely on the move, but don't look for him and Johnson to swap jobs. Perhaps Chicago might be running a little more next year?
What happens with D'Antoni could be more clear after he meets with Steve Kerr and Robert Sarver today.
Mercifully, Dwyane Wade and Star Jones are just "good friends." Because really, anything more is an image unsafe for public consumption.
Latrell Sprewell's quest to feed his family has left him unable to buy a Big Mac on credit.
Below are yesterday's practice vids... we hope.

So very disappointing to see Mamba24's rollcall is not here. I'm glad the chief compaintant has not posted today. See how he'd like it if we all start picking on his posts.
Mamba24, come back, we miss you, you gotta be tougher than this. Perhaps after the weekend.
Can't say that I pay attention to Bynum rumors anymore.
This blog has got me in mourning now. Some people can be such petty jerks. To those of you too pathetic to scroll past what you don't like, you who would smash freedom of speech for your selfish scrolling convenience, your attitude is very poor.
Over and OUT!!
GO LAKERS!!!

I got this from Faith.
This could prove two things.
1. We are all going nuts
And..
2. Like American Idol, the NBA is scripting the playoffs. A Utah vs Lakers preview video, before the current series has been decided. Uhm......

REPOST.
Andy,
Your notion that mamba24 or anyone he perceived someone's comment as hateful is not accurate. The list was all people that don't want mamba24 to go. Let me explain something to you since you're so obtuse when it comes to modern language usage. A hater is someone that doesn't appreciate what someone is doing. They criticize it or talk badly about it. You described mamba24's posts as annoying and are thus a hater. JW Weatherman told mamba24 to seriously, "Please Stop." He is a hater, not some hate-speech guy. It's pretty annoying that a charlatan like yourself could act so uppity about it when you don't even know what hater means.
Please, refer yourself over to urbandictionary.
mamba24 explains earlier in this thread exactly what was going on, in very personal terms, sharing openly recent extremely difficult events in his life. I don't know if you know this Andy, but anniversary's of the death of loved ones frequently causes great stress. People don't even need to consciously know it's an anniversary of a death.
Many of us sought to convey to him that the majority appreciate his enthusiasm and that we know how to scroll past his long roll call post if we don't, well except for you and JW Weatherman. Someone, appropriating mamba24's style, made a list of people that still want mamba24 here also expressing that those that don't like his posts can bite us--look that up in urbandictionary if you are thinking of saying you haven't bitten anyone since kindergarten.
The roll call is a battle cry, it's a celebration of being a Laker fan, it's, it's a listing of roll call members who share a love of a team. It's a sacred institution.
Sometimes selfish pricks were easily annoyed by it. Selfish pricks too lazy or stupid to scroll past a post. I give you permission to think outside the box.
There are people out there completely new to a place that think they have the right to impose their will on a situation--these people are self-absorbed know-it-alls that think there's only one right way to do something. These are not people that go with the flow or wait to see what things are like. They just spout their self-important opinions.
The only people that really have any say about the blog are the K brothers, and I guess the LA Times.
That's what happened.
I'm not a fricking lemming. I think for myself. And I know what I like. It doesn't change much. Although for you to call me a lemming to invalidate a group with a difference of opinion from you, I should probably feel complimented.
I love that you try to say "this is what happened," and then you throw in an ad hominem (an insult) to all those that have a differing opinion from you. You're the master of honesty and even-handedness!
And if you knew anything, you'd know that lemmings don't actually commit blind-following mass suicide. That was a huge misconception perpetrated by a poorly edited nature film. Feel free to look it up on snopes. The lemmings were fleeing a flood (or some cataclysmic environmental disaster) to save their own lives, not offing themselves.
Maybe mamba4 was too emotional. Well, I'll tell you something. It's like a lot of NBA players that are great players that are emotional. Sometimes emotions drives a person to both good and bad. In this case mamba24 was sensitive, but only to the desires of other bloggers, even despite wanting to give us the roll call and give us his enthusiasm. He bowed to what he thought was our will cuz a few easily irked jerks and new arrival know-it-alls. I'll take mamba24's enthusiasm and friendly spirit over just about anyone else on the blog any day. On a day when mamba24 is experiencing career burnout and reexperiencing the loss of a loved one, I think he's entitled to be sensitive.
Laker Truth felt funny about the daily awards and expressed his sentiment carefully and quickly told mamba24 that he liked his posts after expressing his discomfort.
The use of the term Nazi could easily be replaced with the term fascist (and more accurately so). When someone feels they have the right to speak for the many, arbitrarily, particularly in silencing free speech, they are acting fascistically. JW Weatherman's post telling mamba24 to "please stop" could with a little miscontruing easily be considered fascistic.
Compared to mamba24, everyone else on this blog sucks.
Maybe you don't appreciate mamba24. Maybe you can't relate to his childlike enthusiasm (which is a good thing!) and friendly charm. Maybe you hate children and small animals too, I don't know.
"Seems pretty odd that one blogger thinks they are so iimportant [sic] or smart that they make awards in the name of the blog."
That's only what the award would be like if you gave it. If you got out of your own head and realized others have more pure, benevolent motivations, you might realize mamba24 isn't trying to be self-important or smart. He just loves the Lakers and the shared experience of enjoying the Lakers via the blog.
Nobody misconstrued anything.
You're a self-important jerk that wants to justify acting that way by representing your understanding of events as the truth.
I'm not asking you to leave or anything so dramatic. We are all, after all, Lakers fans and can share in the experience. I hope that you think a little bit about what a jerk you were to a sensitive fellow human being. I hope you're a little less comfortable here than you were before your last few posts.

mamba24,
I just want to say that I'm sorry you're having such a tough time of late. I think you should do what's best for you in the long term and I hope you visit often even if we aren't blessed by your posts.
I don't know what you can do about the loss of your mother except try to deal with it so the hurt is something you can live with.
As for your job, if you're burning out badly I suspect you'd benefit from either a vacation or a new career path. Most people have a few careers in their lifetimes. Maybe a year working outside of your industry would do you good?
Anyway, more than anything I hope that you do what's best for you. If you make yourself happy, it's easier to make others happy too. But, you have to take care of yourself first.
Peace brotha.

I appreciate the Bynum update. I just wonder if the medical staff missed something because the article was breaking down several options for Bynum's knee from arthroscopic surgery to microfracture surgery(slim to no chance of it happening). It's frustrating to me because the different options seem to imply that there's possibly more problems with his knee now than just the dislocation of the kneecap and bone bruise.
As much as I think it impossible for it too happen, if the Lakers win the title without Andrew Bynum, he may become expendable and the Lakers could get much value back if they were to trade him. I would like nothing more than for Andrew to be a Laker for life, but I thought Kareem would never be traded by the Bucks or that the Lakers would ever trade Shaq. It will be an intriguing offseason if the Lakers capture the title without the services of Bynum. I've always felt like LakerTom that Andrew is the piece to put us over the top, but the Lakers still seem primed to go all the way without the beast.

"Am I the only one who think's the Pincus article is a whole lot of speculation? and nothing more? Another case of a journalist trying to get hits on their website by
rehashing what we already know.
(Posted by: Bzar | May 02, 2008 at 12:10 PM)
Bzar,
I absolutely agree with you. I do not give any credence to what Eric Pincus is saying in the quoted article. What he wrote there is not anything new, it is simply hearsay. It would be like taking someone's medical comment in this blog as one made by a qualified expert.
Until we see Ariza or Bynum actually practicing @ El Segundo with the Lakers, it is safe to say that their return will not be anytime soon. And the way I define "anytime soon" is anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. Right now, I do not even foresee Ariza helping us in the second round, and this statement is probably more factual than the comments made by Pincus!

Here ya go gang, fresh off the wire ....
Dwyane Wade has finally spoken up about his alleged romance with Star Jones: “Star is an unbelievable woman. We have a great, great relationship. As friends.”
“We’re friends, just like a lot of celebrities. We are friends,” the pro basketball star said Thursday during a guest appearance on “Inside the NBA,” the jocular TNT show featuring Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson.
“Are y’all close friends?” Smith asked.
“We’re good friends,” Wade responded.
“Are you the kind of friends that drink out of one cup with two straws?” Smith persisted, referring to a much-discussed photo of Wade, 26, and Jones, the 46-year-old TV personality who recently filed for divorce, at a tennis match. “Those kind of friends?”
“We are friends. That’s all,” said Wade, who is married to his high school sweetheart and has two sons.
“Good friends?” Barkley interjected.
“Naw, Chuck,” Wade said with a smile.
Some hilarity ensued. Barkley broke through the commotion to say, “I like Star. She’s a cougar.”
“What’s a cougar?” Smith asked, not so innocently, a perfect lob to Barkley.
Sir Charles promptly slammed the ball home: “Preying on a young Dwyane Wade.”
Representatives for Jones did not immediately return a call for comment Thursday night

Semper Fidelis Here you go....
Lakers Injury Update: The most popular reader e-mail request is a status update for Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum. This was last addressed in this space on April 10th, Rumors: Bynum Out Longer?, in which a six-week timetable was put in place.
Three weeks have elapsed and the Lakers are on the verge of a second-round matchup with either the Utah Jazz or Houston Rockets. Meanwhile Bynum has been working individually on his recovery with faint hopes of a return by the NBA Finals (and even fainter during the Western Conference Finals).
Neither at this point appears likely; both remain possible.
A common question from the fans is, "Why doesn't he just shut it down?"
The answer, "Why should he?"
If the knee has a legitimate chance of healing in time for Bynum to push the Lakers over the top against an Eastern Conference foe like the Boston Celtics . . . shouldn't he strive for that?
There's no guarantee the Lakers get that far or that Bynum will be able to play, but the chance in and of itself is enough.
Should Bynum's knee continue to give him problems, arthroscopic surgery is a possibility. A physician would make two to three small incisions. A scope is inserted so that the surgeon can see firsthand exactly what is ailing the joint. Repairs if necessary are done on the spot.
While MRI technology can be very helpful in diagnosing injuries, it has limitations. Bynum could have any number of ailments that to date have been undetected including stretched ligaments, cartilage damage, etc.
A source close to Bynum says there isn't a high likelihood that micro fracture surgery will be required. That's not even on the table at this point.
Depending on what the doctor discovers and the extent of the repair determines recovery time. Had Bynum had arthroscopic surgery three weeks ago when his return was delayed, it would have assuredly meant he was done for the year. Cutting into a young kid's knee is usually a last resort.
Could the rehab process have hindered his recovery?
While the Lakers have been conservative with their treatment, the answer is possibly yes. Surgery may have been the better option earlier on but that would have made a return even more unlikely.
The Lakers, Bynum and his representatives are all responsible for the decisions they make. While Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards returned too quickly in multiple instances (and is now out for the remainder of the playoffs), Bynum's situation represents a happy, albeit frustrating medium.
His long term health is paramount. The hope was his knee would respond to the extent needed for his return but it hasn't. Not yet anyway. Everyone involved won't risk serious long-term damage by bringing him back too quickly.
Any notion that the Lakers are holding Bynum back like some secret weapon is fanciful.
The good news is that Trevor Ariza is about a week away from a full contact practice. If the CT Scan at the end of next week is clean, Ariza will get the green light.
Posted by: Charles | May 02, 2008 at 02:19 PM
Here's Adande's take today on the Lakers TS:
""J.A. Adande: (3:40 PM ET ) Actually, the Lakers have one of the best training staffs going. You don't hear about Kobe missing extended time with injuries, do you? Bynum has been working with his own people on rehab. And one of the hang-ups is there are different philosophies on how he should go about it. His side and their side. Ariza is supposed to get tested again next week to see if he can go. Bynum still isn't practicing. Talked to Lakers pr guy yesterday and he still had no estimate on a Bynum return. As I've been saying, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for him to return this postseason. """

To LakerTom, Faith, Nemaia, Charles, etc., but especially Mamba24 -
After reading all the posts regarding Mamba24's posts, I had to jump in with my thoughts.
Fellow Laker fans -
We are truly blessed these days.
This is one of the best times to be a Laker fan in their history. This team has so much heart and effort and gets along so well, that no other Laker team compares.
We are blessed for that reason.
Kobe Bryant, one of the greatest talents this league has ever seen, is at the peak of his powers. The brilliance with which he plays the game is a joy to watch.
We are blessed for that reason.
Fischer, Odom, Ronny, Luke, Vlad, Sascha, Drew, etc. - Has there ever been a more likeable bunch (bench?) than these guys.
We are blessed for that reason.
Mostly though, we are blessed to be a part of this community.
Yes, this is a blog. There are thousands of blogs out there. Many places to meet to share ideas. Nice, but that does not rise to the level of a community.
This is truly a community in the best sense of the word. Those of us who are part of the blog, even those like me who rarely ever post, but nevertheless read every post, every day, and feel so much a part of Laker Nation, feel like we belong to a community.
A community of Laker fans, to be sure, but also a community that feels as if we know each other and like each other.
Every morning, I eagerly click on to the blog to check in with my family here. I want to read LakerToms intelligent thoughts. I laugh and sympathize with Faith when she demands and expects perfection each and every minute the Lakers are on the floor. I want to read when our family members beat back the written attacks on Kobe whenever the trolls emerge from the darkness from which they live.
I even want to be greeted with a Good Morning by Charles and the other early posters.
Good Morning back at ya!
Mostly, though, it is the roll call and extreme enthusiasm of Mamba24 that I feel has most directly influenced the feeling of community that exists here. When we are added to the roll call, we feel even more a part of the community. That is special!
Mamba24's contribution cannnot be overestimated. It is, along with the excellence of the K bro's, what truly seperates us from all the others.
Life is hard, but to feel part of a community allows us to slog on every day with a bit more joy than if we were to go it alone.
A Laker victory, while always sweet, is much better celebrated with friends.
So, to those who don't want to see Mamba24's roll calls, please scroll right past. No one is asking that YOU be part of this community, but know that you are missing out on something special.
It is my hope that the understanding that the Mamba24's contributions here will dawn on you and allow you to truly feel the joy that the rest of us share.
A blog is common.
A community is not.
GO LAKERS!

Finally some closure on the whole Andrew Bynum deal. Andrew has declared himself unable to return in these playoffs in a Lakers report in the LA Times. Now I can breathe again knowing that we have to ride with who we have and keep the faith that we can still win it all. I wish AB the best and can't wait for his return next season, and I'm thankful that he finally put all the rumors about whether or not he's returning to rest.
Our Lakers can now focus on winning the title with who they have and I believe that they can get it done. Time to soldier on and get it done!!! Go Lakers!!!

DON" CRY OVER THE SPILL MILK:
It sounds like a broken record as folks keep clamouring for Manba24's return. Franky I agree with J.W. Weatherman that it is an eye sore and the information shared of no consequence except for groupies wanting to flock together or wanting to the feeling of belonging. Personally, blogging is a great avenue to exchange inbformation, views and interests on Lakers. Even I noticed Charles almost always says one liners and saw his blod today which really again is a cut and past from different news. No big deal, it may be a repeat but atlest not an eye sore.
On a serious note, Mamba was sent packing with Luca ona one way trip to Vegas, Kapish!!
I too now have resigned to the fact that wonder kid Bynum will not come back this year, so I rather see him fully recover from his injury and look forward to watching Bynum for many years to come along side the real Mamba24.

Nik Kannan,
Outstanding commentary on the Triangle Offense. You know your basketball. I ran the Triangle Offense as a point guard in high school and it really is just a reactive offense that emphasizes strong ball and player movement and spacing for defensive transition. Bottom line, it is really a very effective and difficult to defend offense, especially when run by players with high basketball IQ’s as is the case with the Lakers.
Once a player understands how the offense works, then everything becomes very simple and the options become second nature. Players know where and when the cutters are coming and how and when to deal with double teams. As you said, it puts everybody on the team in the proper position with options to react depending on what the defense does. That is why it is perfect for players like Kobe Bryant, who know how to read the defense.
The one rub on the offense is that you really do need players who have high basketball IQ’s and are good passers in order for the Triangle Offense to be effective. More than most other basketball offenses, the Triangle is al about ball control and movement. It does not require a true point guard or dominant low post player, although either can make the offense even more difficult to defend.
Phil’s version of the Triangle also prefers taller players who can see over the defense and make passes despite defensive pressure. While the Triangle has often been referred to as an “equal opportunity” offense because it works best when everybody is involved in the offense, it also is extremely flexible in that you can easily isolate or post up any player at any time, which we have been seeing the Lakers do every time they have a mismatch.
The other wrinkle we have seen this year with the Triangle Offense is Phil turning the Lakers lose in transition in order to take advantage of Jordan Farmar’s skills and get the team some easy hoops and a few more offensive possessions per game. This wrinkle was actually at the suggestion of special assistant coach Tex Winter and has really added to the potency of the Lakers offensive attack.
It is going to be fascinating seeing how the Lakers utilize Drew and Pau and Lamar in the front court in the Triangle Offense. I have been excited about how well Lamar has been playing without the ball, which is what he will have to do once Drew and Pau are also in the lineup. Will we revert to rotating the ball around the horn while Drew freezes his defender down low? Or will we mix in a lot of pick and rolls that take advantage of Drew’s great hands and ability to flush down any pass thrown up above the rim?

Jon K, Faith,
I'm with you guys, Trevor will be a big help to our defense. Especially since I'm sure neither team would really be preparing for him and would not have too much tape to scout him on.
Hopefully Houston wins tonight to push it to 7. if so:
Game 1 - Tues.
Game 2 - Thurs?
May 9 - Ariza scan - Friday
Game 3 - Sat. or Sun.?
Game 4 - Mon. or Tues.?
He can be a big boost to us in the middle of the series, hypothetically of course.

With this article in the times about Bynum and the Pincus update i think the Lakers should come out and say Bynum will not play again this year and we look forward to having a healthy player back next season .....End of story....No... its unlikely or maybe ...Its over for the season thats it......If he needs a scope to look inside just get it done ..Agent Zero couldnt wait and has done more harm than good...By having the scope it stops the guessing game and paints a clearer picture....

Dave Rosenzweig,
Outstanding post. The great thing about a community is that it is always growing and evolving. Good to know you have been reading and even better having you posting. As Kobe said, let's enjoy the journey. The Lakers are the ultimate road trip. Looking for more from you in the future. Thanks.

The blog is still Mambaizing? This is getting a little Reverend Wrightish. Let it go already.
The deal with Andrew Bynum kind of gets under my skin. I just wish Laker PR would be a little more forthcoming in regards to these issues.
I just can't believe I was suckered into thinking that Bynum would actually come back. It seemed like a farce, considering his DISLOCATED KNEECAP, that he would come back in the first place. But now that we've been left hanging for a couple months, I'm disappointed that the truth, the Laker Truth, is that he'll most likely not be back.
I just think that this whole covering up the injury has been a disservice to the fans. On the other hand, I do appreciate that the organization is being real careful with Bynum.
Go Lakers!
