Group effort
The Lakers, despite some profound advances in the quality of the players around him, are still fundamentally Kobe Bryant's team, so when he took the floor with a very balky back for Game 5 of L.A.'s Western Conference semifinal against Utah with the series tied at two, there was certainly reason to worry. Or maybe not. Despite a quality effort from the Jazz, L.A. walked away with a critical 111-104 win Wednesday night at Staples. Kobe was, despite his team high/extremely impressive 26 points, clearly limited and had to pick his spots, which meant the guys around him had to pick it up. Rare are the close games in which Kobe doesn't attempt a field goal in the fourth, but that's what we saw last night, as his teammates, generally another member of the starting five, stepped in to fill the void.
The box shows Pau Gasol had a huge second quarter, then finished strong late in the fourth (not without a little controversy). Lamar Odom (22/11, two blocks) was a force on both ends, while Derek Fisher contributed key buckets and four steals and Vlad Radmanovic broke out of his playoff slump with 15 points.
Coming so soon after Sunday's OT controversy - did Kobe abandon his teammates, or did they bail on him? - on Wednesday it was clear Kobe's mates came prepared to chip in, and did in support of their hobbled (but still pretty damn effective) leader.
So that was one theme of the night. The team. But it wasn't the only one. From Utah's end of things, it was a night of missed opportunities, as its best chance to steal a win in L.A. went up in smoke. No surprise, given the trouble they have here against the Lakers. Both teams turned the ball over too much,
but the giveaways were particularly rough on the visitors, who had enough things to overcome without shooting themselves in the foot. Still, the Jazz had plenty of chances to get ahead, but didn't.
That L.A. bugaboo is something Utah will now have to overcome if it is to win the series.
Yet another? Officiating. The Lakers, as the home team has throughout, dominated the free-throw count, which was noticed not just by Jerry Sloan but others sitting courtside. Of course, fouling is often in the eye of the beholder.
Fun little story on former Laker turned long-time Jazz announcer Rod Hundley.
Not that Kobe was faking it, but did PJ take advantage of an opportunity to change the subject from this weekend's losses?
Danny Ainge squeaked past Mitch Kupchak for Executive of the Year honors.

Jeffs A Ho...has been posting the same post on other sites as well he left the same comment on Kevin Ding's blog at the OC Register...
Kevin Ding left a reply for him that spells it out for "A Ho" as well as the rest of you who are blaming Kobe for blowing his defensive assignments...
# KEVIN DING Says:

Point of accuracy for Jeffs: The Lakers planned to have Bryant roaming on defense from the start — they wanted to be very aggressive on defense, and it worked to great effect with Utah piling up 15 first-half turnovers — and four of Brewer’s early points came when Radmanovic failed to play proper team defense and cover for Bryant. One of the plays was a basic switch when Utah’s players exchange positions along the baseline, but Radmanovic kept chasing Kirilenko while Bryant switched to Kirilenko. The Lakers’ coaches were none too pleased with Radmanovic, not Bryant.

In every conversation about the home team wins in these playoffs, no one has mentioned that refs will decide for the home team every time. They talk about comfort level and energy while in reality the team with the most fouls somehow changes on the flight back home.
We got the benefit at home, we won't again in Utah. It's predictable. It's an impossible game to officiate and even more so on replay. And BTW: wasn't there a league mandate to crack down on discontinued dribbles and carrying the ball? D Will is great and great at that too.
We held serve because Pau didn't get called for his elbow in Okur's back like he would have in SLC. The NBA rule seems to be, if the ref calls it, it was a foul. If not, not.
Posted by: Vman | May 15, 2008 at 10:39 AM
Utah and some disgruntled reporters crying foul over the Lakers getting breaks as they claim. lol
I love it.
They want us to believe Pau who has biceps as big as Olive Oyl's, picks up Okur and throws him five rows into the stands.
Utah gets beat at their own game then complains.
Lakers Nation, it doesn't get any better than this.
Series over. Utah and Adande have lost it.

Mel,
Thanks for the link. But Andande did admit it was a flop on Okur though...

Good afternoon Laker Nation!
Huge win yesterday.
Kobe is a warrior. So are Lamar and Gasol.
Let's close the deal on Friday!!!!
Posted by: Allan - Brazil | May 15, 2008 at 10:45 AM
BocaLakerGurl,
That makes a lot more sense since Brewer wasn't just forgotten briefly, he was wide open. I could probably have scored a bucket being that wide open.
Posted by: Benjamin | May 15, 2008 at 10:45 AM
JJ Andande asks the wrong question. The question isn't whether or not Okur flopped, the question is would it have been a no call in Utah?
And BTW, what happened to the idea that flopping would be considered a free throw infraction.
Posted by: Vman | May 15, 2008 at 10:46 AM
Mel, great espn article. You can tell Okur flopped and at a really stupid point in the game. Mehmet is too big to bend at the waist and topple over from the likes wafer thin Pau Gasol.
I loved this quote at the end of the article:
"Sometimes when you come down the stretch like that, it's who wants the ball more. We've got to get the ball. Those are just hustle plays. They're not going to call fouls like that. You've just got to find a way to come up with the ball." -Matt Harpring
Just like I was angry at Sasha for yapping at that point in the game, a jazz fan that knows basketball should know that that is the wrong time and place to start flopping. Our guys are just as guilty of that sometimes, trying to get a call like that late in the game.
Its simple....you gotta know the context in which you play. The Jazz happen to be horrendous at that. You can't be physical away from home. If those homers quit with their tin-foil hat conspiracy theories for a brief second and talk NBA basketball, they'd realize it.

KOBE IS MVP
KOBE IS MVP
KOBE IS MVP
KOVE IS MVP
KOBE IS MVP
KOBE IS MVP
KOBE IS MVP
YOU SEE, NOTHING THE HATERS SAY CAN CHANGE THE FACT THAT KOBE BRYANT (ALTHOUGH NOT PERFECT) IS THE BEST BASKETBALL PLAYER ON THE PLANET. THE NBA PLAYERS KNOW IT, THE COACHES KNOW IT, AND THE FANS KNOW IT. NO MATTER WHAT SILLY ARGUMENT THE KOBE HATERS COME UP WITH NOTHING WILL CHANG THE FACT THAT
KOBE IS THE MVP AND THE LAKERS ARE GOING TO WIN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.
OH YEAH...

My favorite part was when Jerry Sloan turned away from the ref and the cameras were still rolling and he said (with a pissed off look on his face) "f*&*&**&ng (word for male chicken/anatomy)!"
That was totally priceless.
Posted by: Tim-4-Show | May 15, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Fatty,
Howdy?
"They want us to believe Pau who has biceps as big as Olive Oyl's, picks up Okur and throws him five rows into the stands."
You forgot that Olive put some oil on the floor, and the ref's got the "Memo" on Okur....
Posted by: Charles | May 15, 2008 at 10:53 AM
UPDATE: Love this Matt Harpring quote, from the Salt Lake Tribune: "Sometimes when you come down the stretch like that, it's who wants the ball more. We've got to get the ball. Those are just hustle plays. They're not going to call fouls like that. You've just got to find a way to come up with the ball."
I know I'm not supposed to say anything good about my opponents, but I don't always do what I'm supposed to do. :P
I have to respect Matt Harpring for this comment. He's not some pansy whining about the officiating. He's playing playoff basketball, not tiddlywinks. The guy plays hard, fouls hard, gets physical, and when they call a foul on him, you don't see him whining about it.

Good Morning Charles---Good Morning Everybody.....
Hopefully those of us who believed whomever won this game will win the series comes to fruition.....
Random thoughts.....
We shot free throws much better and will need to continue to do so to indeed win this series (as well as the championship)....
For some reason the Jazz seem really lucky procurring offensive rebounds--they seem to get a lot of lucky bounces---but there are too many tImes we simply don't block out or work hard enough---I could dig it Shaft if we can get that under control....
Famrar needs to drive a lot more...
EVERY TIME WE RAN A PICK & ROLL OR A GIVE AND GO WE SCORED A DUNK---maybe there is something to be said about those two most basic and beautiful plays in basketballville....
Hopefullyu Sasha's and Mr. Walton's slumps are short lived---i.e. over....
Don't understand when Rad is seemingly shooting well he isn't riden a little more....
I hate Doug Collins---he is nothing short of terrible and at heart a Laker hater--he was really rooting for the Jazz to "take the lead" relentlessly and constantly---couldn't he think of anything else to say?
Boozer's ruts in his head remind me of the Canals of Mars....
Kiralenko (however you spell it) would blend right in with the Adam's Family....
Kiralanko (however you smell it) is so sharp any of his body parts (including his hair) can cause major lacrerations by just looking at you....
I dig it when Odom goes agressively to the basket and him and Pau play the two man game (see above)--as well as seeing Kobe (or anybody) penetrate a little and dish---I can say with all certainty that I would enjoy seeing more of that....
I could really dig us wrapping this up on Friday in Planet Utah--their fans deserve nothing less...
AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!
GO LAKERS !!!

That was a nice story on Hot Rod Hundley, it comes in rarity in the business of broadcasting. What he said: "It's a thing that all professional players have, that you always want to beat the team you just left."
Perhaps that's the kind of feeling why Jon Barry of ESPN has untoward negativity against the Lakers. Well, Hundley was a decent player during his time with West, Chick and old Lakers while Jon was a mere journeyman played only one year witht he Lakers and was overshadowed by this young italian bred kid named Kobe. Today, when I get to Jon Barry's part on half time analysis, I remember what the late Chick used to say, just put your TV on mute and watch the clown talk to himself.

Morning Charles
Didn't see where Adande said it was a flop?
True Hoops even attacked the position of Adande, claiming it was a missed call.
"When the Jazz got close to the basket, there was more contact than in a rush-hour crowd shoving into the subway, but rarely a blown whistle. Meanwhile, at the other end, Lamar Odom breezed past Carlos Boozer for a layup and got a gift and-one. And Utah players and coaches are still wondering how Mehmet Okur could wind up sprawling toward the baseline, leaving Pau Gasol alone under the basket for an easy offensive rebound and dunk to put the Lakers ahead by five points with 20.5 seconds remaining."

I also have played a lot of basketball in my day, what you saw Kobe do hitting the floor on his knees in pain I to have been there. I am truely amazed that he can still play, this guy is a human medical marvel. In all reality he should be bedridden in pain, some folks questioned the medical staff for reasons unfounded; the medical staff is by far one of the best in the country if you ask me, to have Kobe back on the floor at 50% or less still playing MVP ball, credit to him also because trust me he is still in pain and discomfort. He really reminds me of the movie 300, he is a Spartan "fight til' the death" mentality. I crown him Lakers Leonidas, leading the Spartan army to battle. "Spartans!" Hura!

Greetings to the Brothers K and the Laker Nation faithful. Ugly win last night but we'll of course take it.
To the Brothers K:
Good coverage on the live Blog again with the usual accurate observations. I appreciate that both of you take the time to maintain the blogging. Being a 29 year Laker fan who now lives in San Antonio you can guess that I don't much get to discuss the Lakers with many persons.. lol.
To Mel:
You're correct about Adande. This was only the 2nd column I've read from him about the Lakers and he really seems to be hoping they fail. He needs to sit in the booth with Collins, Hubie, etc....so he'll have likeminded company. Read this Adande observation in today's column:
"When the Jazz got close to the basket, there was more contact than in a rush-hour crowd shoving into the subway, but rarely a blown whistle. Meanwhile, at the other end, Lamar Odom breezed past Carlos Boozer for a layup and got a gift and-one. And Utah players and coaches are still wondering how Mehmet Okur could wind up sprawling toward the baseline, leaving Pau Gasol alone under the basket for an easy offensive rebound and dunk to put the Lakers ahead by five points with 20.5 seconds remaining."
It's amazing that millions of persons can see the exact same action or play of a team and we could get 500,000 different versions of it when each is told to put to paper exactly what happend on said play. I love it. The Jazz get to play 3 straight games of their "physical" Goon ball style of game as the refs let both sides get physical and then now when they lose one playing Utah style it's the refs. Think I just need to do as other Laker Nation fans on this blog do. Just stop concentrating on the refs and trolls and enjoy the and accentuate the positive of the Lakers team and their games...

I loved the way Kobe played that 4th quarter.I never felt like the Lakers were going to lose because Kobe continued to get his very good teammates open looks even after they missed shots.Sasha couldn't hit anything but Kobe kept getting him shots that he normally makes. When Kobe trusts his teammates and doesn't force any stupid shots this team is close to being unbeatable.

jhnlannery,
JA's okay, just a little confused right now. He was all positive about the Lakers in the last month, then boom! The last two Daily Dimes on games 4 & 5, he just lost me. I don't know if someone pissed in his mojito or he's trying to be contrarion, but to blatantly say that the Lakers were handed a game in which they were NEVER threatened is just so dumb.
The Jazz get away with so much crap with their physicality that any non-calls or missed calls for their opponents is basketball justice.
Posted by: mel | May 15, 2008 at 11:26 AM
no offense but not a fan of the pic today...a little too heil hitler for me if you know what I mean.
Still, fun, fun game. I thought the difference wasn't just Fish staying out of foul trouble for the most part...but that Pau was a presence inside. I counted at least 3 blocks that weren't there before. Not to mention shots being challenged.
GO Lakers!

Authorities in Las Vegas say bad-check charges are possible for Charles Barkley.

Barkley under review over $400,000 gambling debt
Associated Press
LAS VEGAS — Retired NBA star Charles Barkley will face criminal charges if he doesn't repay a $400,000 gambling debt to a Las Vegas casino, a prosecutor said Thursday.
"We're in the process of sending Mr. Barkley notice that we're considering filing a criminal complaint,'' Clark County District Attorney David Roger said. "He'll have an opportunity like anybody else to make restitution to the hotel.''
The posh Wynn Las Vegas casino alleges in a civil complaint filed Wednesday in Nevada state court that Barkley failed to repay four $100,000 casino markers, or loans, he received last Oct. 18 and 19.
"To date, and despite repeated demands, Barkley has refused to repay the $400,000,'' the complaint said.
Barkley is a basketball analyst for Turner Network Television who has made no secret of his gambling over the years.
His agent in New York did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment, and a TNT spokeswoman in Atlanta declined comment.
Wynn Las Vegas spokeswoman Dorothy Land also declined comment, citing ongoing litigation.
Barkley, 45, played 16 seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Rockets (from 1996-2000). He was named MVP in 1993 and was an 11-time NBA All-Star. Barkley also played on the USA Olympic ``Dream Team'' in 1992 and 1996.
Barkley estimated during a May 2006 interview with ESPN that he'd gambled away about $10 million over the years.
``Do I have a gambling problem? Yeah, I do have a gambling problem,'' Barkley said. ``But I don't consider it a problem because I can afford to gamble.''
He said he never bet on basketball, and only bet in casinos. He called it a bad habit that he intended to continue.

I believe AK in the Houston series flopped when Scola gave a SLIGHT shove during a critical point during the final minute. I'm sure the refs had that situation in mind.

From the Henry Abbott True Hoop article about Referee's Power....
"They allow enough contact that they can, essentially, call fouls whenever they want.
Similarly, I used to commute on a straight, flat road with unbelievably good visibility, no side streets, not even any buildings around. Everybody traveled at least 45 or 50 for that stretch of a mile or so, and even that didn't feel remotely dangerous. But the speed limit was posted at 25 -- a speed literally nobody ever traveled.
Which meant the police could stop ... absolutely whomever they wanted.
That's a lot of power!"

Laker Legacy, what funny about that video is that Pau's arm barely moves from its bent position. If a 6-11 263 lbs man is sent sprawling that minute movement, then I should be in the NBA for my strength advantage. I'd be Dennis freakin Rodman if NBA players are that weak.
They aren't. That was just a boneheaded play by Okur, just like Sasha yappin.

I just realized I'm forgetting to dish out well deserved praise for the our beloved team. I will do so now..
Mad respect to Lamar. He really stepped up his all around play in a game when we sorely needed it due to Triple Ocho's back spasm. He made some buckets in the fourh when it looked as Utah might take the lead near the end. He also played with intensity and got the team fired up with his big dunk at about the 6:20 mark in the fourth His rebounding was very good as usual.
Gasol. Although I still think he needs to get stronger to be a more effective inside presence, he came up big in the 4th quarter as well with the dunk and key rebounds. Glad he stopped looking at the refs for calls and just played with toughness in key moments.
Vlad, welcome back 15 points! Thank you.
Fisher solid again and Kobe was Kobe of course.
I'm hoping the poise toughness and determination the team showed late in the fourth carries over to Friday. I know that the Trolls and Utah fans will be chewing on their nails and pacing the carpet Friday so I'm feeling comfortable. The Jazz have played 3 solid games in a row winning 2 of them. So I'm believing they're due for a bad night of shooting Friday and we close them out. Besides, what better way to end an opposing team's season and their fans hopes and dreams than RIGHT in front of their faces in their home gym? Can't beleive those pics I saw of the Jazz fan making fun of Derek Fisher's daughter and the idiot that brought his blow up date, er I mean blow up doll taking a smack at Kobe's Colorado troubles. I know the fans in Utah are dedicated, passionate and LOUD, but those were some new lows I never thought I'd see in such a conservative city. Really really evil and low class those 2 fans. So let's enjoy watching the Lakers STICK IT IN THEIR FACES and end their season Friday!!!! It's L A LAKERS WINNING TIME!!!! L A LAKERS WINNING TIME!!!
