Game Thread - Lakers at Jazz

May 9, 2008 |  5:56 pm

Good Jazz brings to mind names like "Coltrane," "Davis," and "Monk."  Bad Jazz brings to mind names like "G," "G," and "G."  Let's hope tonight's jazz is even weaker than the stuff played by Kenny.

if we're down by 3 and fish gets the ball with 0.4 left, I will be joining a church shortly.

WTF Luke butter fingers Walton up to his lame game play again!

No worries. Utah played as good as they could, and the Lakers played one of their worst games of the entire season, and still the Jazz had to struggle to win this one.

Lakers will advance. Good timing for a lost. Now our next streak, which would be reasonable in length, can take us straight to the championships.

go Jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Freakin' Luke Walton

AK are you going to rewind you TIVO and look at that one?

I can't for commentary on that Walton

Kobe had to restrain himself from punching him after that

Luke just can't make a mistake like that. You have to be sure with the ball when it counts...

4-1 series

Luke WAltion should just run into a wall.

For us to play like we did tonite and still be in this in the end means good things for us on Sunday....we really made some boo boos at the end that we don't normally make...but we really did'nt expect to go 16-0 and nobody expected us to sweep Utah (of course, we were wishful thinking) but despite it all I feel good about Sunday...

If someone could promise me I would never have to watch another game called by hubie and mike tirico again, I will be tithing generously. Well, if you throw in Bill Walton and John Madden.

Pau needs to do some soul searching before Sunday. He cost us this game.

troy,

Walton has always been a better player than Vlad. Luke wasn't healthy or confident most of the year. The only thing Vlad does better than Luke is shoot threes. But he's extremely streaky anyway.

We just have to win the next two. I don't think the Jazz can play better than tonight, but we sure can.

I'm too freakin pissed to comment at this point.

Crappy ass D, turnovers.

Nuff said.

Pfunk,

What do you want me to say? Walton lost the ball. Bad play, for sure. But that's hardly the same thing as a no effort, non-existent close out attempt, like Vlad made on that play. He literally stood there and watched Kirilenko set up, measure the shot, and launch it. If you wanna say the two scenarios are comparable, be my delusional guest.

What's just sad is that you're clearly rooting for something like that to happen. You're like a vulture, not saying anything when Walton's outplaying Vlad (whom you bitched about Phil pulling), then cackling with glee when he makes a mistake. And yes, it was a big mistake. But the joy you take in it is just pathetic.

It's like that Lincoln/Kennedy thing...

eerie.

worst Hollywood script EVER

Kobe's turn over and missed 3 point shot at the 2+
minute mark sealed the deal.
PS:
Championship teams win games like the game coming up on Sunday and then wrap it up on games like the next home game on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Pau, Vlad, Farmar, and Sasha disappeared and we lose by 5? Kobe starts out 1-6? He goes 0-6 from the 3?

I REALLY like our chances. We will rock on Sunday. We will be hungry. The Jazz and their fans will feel guilty about playing at home on a Sunday. The Jazz will be emotionally spent from this game. Gasol will have a big bounceback game.

Unfortunately for Jazz, deal now they must with very upset Laker team on Sunday.

Tonight, young ones visibly affected by atmosphere.

2nd quick foul on Fish, game breaker it was.

Jazz, yet to impress. Series hinges still on quality of Lakers play.

nice ending for gasol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nice ending for gasol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LUKE PLAYED A GOOD GAME...........

The lst play did'nt cost us the game.........
the none rebounding cost us the game.

4-1

GO LAKERS!

Forget about Luke, look at our bench, game was not lost on Walton turnover... Look at Farmar's or Sasha's game and you will forget about Luke...

Taking away the attitude, I really believe Smush Parker is a better player than Jordan Farmar. It would have been interesting to have Smush play the backup to Fisher, with Fish teaching Smush the mental aspects of the game.

Smush is bigger and stronger than Farmar, is a better finisher, and has a better outside shot. He's also quicker on defense. A Fish/Smush tandem would have paid dividends.

Dare I say, could Jordan Farmar turn out to be a bust....

Luke made a mistake at the end and Kobe had a couple too that you normally don't see him make....this was just one of those games...we will be back sunday....

It wasn't going to be easy coming into Utah. Lakers will be fine. They just gotta tighten up and secure the ball. Go back to Gasol. Go back to what worked.

That was a terrible play by Luke, though. The ball literally just fell out of his hands.

bad game overall..Lakers got within 5..and then 3..and the rest is history

TROY............

LUKE-VLAD.......

with a diffrent coach i'll take vlad all day.

Xodus,

I'm starting to see this about Luke now. I think I underestimated his abilities.

Lesson learned. we will win Sunday. Book it. Too bad because we absolutely, positively had our chances here but Kobe did not get the help. Yet this is a game I didn't expect to be in our W column

Vlad will always be a problem due to his consistent inconsistency. Trading him for value will be difficult given his contract. Jordan I think has potential but needs to go on a development plan. One thing for sure is that neither Vlad or Farmar are peaking right now.

Oh yeah...I was 0fer on the blowout prediction.

'Till Sunday (OK band but even better outcome for our Lakers)

AK ~

Yeah, me either.

phred ~

Amen.

Kobe played great. Fish played as well as he could. Luke played well (he was fouled).
Everybody else underperformed.
Young Laker players had the jitters.
Boozer played like an All-Star and Team USA player. He was due for that kind of game.
Yet, game was still winnable in the last minute.

Lakers are a superior team to the Jazz. Better players. Better system. Better coaching. The MVP.
Nerves will be better settled in the second game at SLC.
Lakers will close out series in LA, make Buss a few more bucks to pay for luxury tax.
No worries.

This one got away...but even to be in it with so much going wrong both offensively and defensively is an encouraging sign. Let's look forward to Sunday, Laker Faithful!
I am confident the Lakers are the better team, and will prove it in the next two games.
The silver lining is the following: I think the Spurs-Hornets series is going to go at least 6. While it's nice to have a little rest and prep, no team plays its best ball if it has too long a break before starting a new series. So we take this series in 5 (or even 6), and take a battle-tested, lean, mean fighting machine into the Western Conf finals.
How's that for optimism!

This game shows everyone (Adande) who thinks trading Bynum would even be considered, why that is foolish. Pau is just not not strong enough and doesn't hustle enough for boards.

It's a good sign that we won despite Pau's struggles and Vlad and Farmar attempting to cost us the game. We've got to bounce back in game 4.

i don't want to see farmar playing again, he need to go to the D-LEAGUE

i;m not the biggest luke walton fan, but i try to look at the positives he brings just since i am laker fan, but my god...that turnover after the jumpball...killed me...just killed me...
it sums up luke walton in clutch moments....once he got possession, with limited time and all players scrammbling...he should of looked at the bucket and considered driving....or of course made a pass....but the "always pass part of him..." caused that turnover because he had no intention of being a scoring threat..and was indecisive...

troy-

and you were doing so well. Smush got cut by the Miami Heat, the worst team in the league, for having an altercation with a parking attendent.

there are huge intengible benefits that come with not being a complete flake. There are better PGs in the league, and the Lakers need to get one, or at least a PG that can play with the triangle, if not necessarily a good pure PG, but do not make the mistake of wanting Smush back. That's just bad karma.

I won't feel bad ...we will bounce back again..

Untimely turnovers and no help for Kobe...

They might have one this battle...but we will win this war!

Go Lakers!

#1 Lakers will not be fine if Gasol is going to continue to play like a sissy and whine and b**** to the referees. He does not get back on defense and refuses to play physical. Read Charley Rosen comments on Gasol in his previous articles- they are right on. HE IS SOFT.
#2 Farmar is playing like crap in the playoffs. He needs to step up because we have no other backup point guard. He needs to stay solid on defense and stop going for steals. I'm sure Coach Howland never taught him to play defense like that.
#3 Walton made a HUGE blunder. BUT he has played pretty darn well in the playoffs and I respect him for the way he has manned up to Harping's physical play.

troy

"Pau needs to do some soul searching before Sunday. He cost us this game."

With all do respect troy, Gasol didn't blow this Game...........the question is Why did Phil put him in this position.......KYP

If Phil learned one thing tonight it should be do not run the offense through Gasol.......or Luke ( I have to say that because Phil may do it)

phred,

Read what I said. With Fish there, he could have taught Smush the mental aspects and the proper approach to the game.

You cannot deny that Smush is a better skilled player than Farmar, can you?

Pau needs to stop playing like a bi*ch. We needed a second option badly this game. How can you let Okur push you around all series? Lord nows I can't stand Loozer and the way he smacks that gum. Hes a little traitor and you can tell hes a creep.

I respect Deron, good point guard and does what he knows he can.

Harpring is another punk, that is beloved by Jerry Sloan because he plays exctaly the way Jerry wants him to play, and that is to be a dirty player.

It has to be illegal the way the jazz set like four thousand screens on a play and do it in the paint. Jerry Sloan's offense is just downright illegal and he has been doing it for 20 yrs. But notice that he has never won a ring before, and I hope Phil beats his offense again. It is a cheating offense, and the league should look into it.

If the refs are going to let the jazz play physical, then they should allow us to play physical also without calling a foul.

Costly free throws killed us.

I hate to pick on Walton, but he made two really bone-headed plays. He didn't box out Boozer after the missed freethrow and he gave the ball to Korver after the jumpball.

The good news is that Okur was on fire from the floor. Let's see if we can stop that.

AK

What about the offensive rebound luke an pa gave up plus the put back........

my whole argument is that luke get's way more string than vlad.........

If vlad can play the game an make a mistake.....without being taking out.....vlad will be a better player.....SONICS-CLIPPERS

Vlade and Luke need to step up now!
