Game Thread - Lakers at Jazz

Good Jazz brings to mind names like "Coltrane," "Davis," and "Monk." Bad Jazz brings to mind names like "G," "G," and "G." Let's hope tonight's jazz is even weaker than the stuff played by Kenny.
AK

El Capitan is getting mugged out there. I could probably live with that, it's the playoffs, but I noticed that when they called the foul on him, he barely made contact. Maybe if the refs get used to watching him bust guys upside the head they will stop calling the picky crap. But seriously, Pau is a clean player and he almost never flops. He seriously needs to start practicing his Manu moves, not to mention added a Tim Duncan face to the repetoire.
I don't give a crap about who Okur is married to, what Carlos Boozer's fertility problems are, or what the damn NASCAR score is. Isn't there a playoff game going on that we could watch? Oh yeah, I can almost see it there in the background.

Pau is having a hard time
Posted by: xSilaNtiSx | May 09, 2008 at 06:57 PM
We need to get Boozer in foul trouble.
And Okur.

pfunk36,
Do you think Phil is Avery Johnson who calls every play from the sidelines? No, we run the triangle and they're passing it to Gasol because he's one on one and we're at our best when we run our O inside-out.
Posted by: Xodus | May 09, 2008 at 06:58 PM
Lakers just have to keep the game close at the half. Jazz are on a roll and won;t play as well all game long. Lakers just have to make sure the hole isn;t too deep.
Posted by: LakerinBC | May 09, 2008 at 06:58 PM
Clean play by Rony.
Posted by: LakerinBC | May 09, 2008 at 07:01 PM
AK,
Hubie just called Turiaf, "Tourea." Looks like he took your advice.
Posted by: Xodus | May 09, 2008 at 07:01 PM
THAT'S IT TURIAF!! that's how you lay LEGAL WOOD!! That should hype us up
Posted by: lakeraholic | May 09, 2008 at 07:01 PM
Have faith guys.
Champions go through adversity. We must remain poised.
Go Lakers!
Posted by: Faith | May 09, 2008 at 07:01 PM
they are not calling fouls for the lakers.
anyways, just BELIEVE!
Posted by: isang | May 09, 2008 at 07:02 PM
Xodus,
Hubie's research clearly doesn't include a persual of the pronunciation guide. haha

Pau: stopping dribbling and dunk the ball!
Vladimir: just go away!
Jordan: be careful or you might not get that extension.

I can tell you have never played the game........EVERY SINGLE GAME HAS A PULSE OF IT'S OWN........TONIGHT GOING INSIDE TO GASOL THE WAY THE REFS ARE CALLING THE GAME IS NOT WORKING..........Read the art of war..........You have to adapt to what is going on. KYP.....Know your personnel
Place Kobe in the post and have him be more aggressive and let's see how Utah responds.
If you would do your homework you would know that Gasol gets his points primarily because of so much attention being thrown at Kobe
Stop being a robot and think and adapt.......Can you do that?
Posted by: pfunk36 | May 09, 2008 at 07:03 PM
Lamar Odom - MVRP - Most Valuable Role Player.
Posted by: LakerinBC | May 09, 2008 at 07:06 PM
Yeeeeehhaaaaa!
Go Jazz Go.
Lakers are playing scared now.
They know we are unbeatable in Utah..
Posted by: Jazzers | May 09, 2008 at 07:06 PM
Happy Camper...no doubt. Must be a Utah thing, nice look!
Complex Brotha' I have said in a previous post that that Gaso; must not be timid around the rim. Finesse is not what's needed but instead he needs to SLAM it home

Yoda have question.
If Melo play not on Olympic squad (seemingly likely), maybe L.O. get nod?
Posted by: Master Yoda | May 09, 2008 at 07:06 PM
After as poor a half as that, if they can chip away at that lead and keep it single digits going into the half, they are looking very good. If this is all the Jazz have got, we are in great shape in the series, and even in this game.

pfunk-
I don't really see it as an exercise in honing my critical thinking skills. But if I had to guess, I would say that Pau is getting the ball in the post because THAT'S WHY THE LAKERS WIN WHEN THEY HAVE PAU IN THE LINEUP. If someday the Lakers go insane and give me 10 mil a year to coach, I will probably not change from a strategy that has won me 57 games and put me in the playoffs just because one of my players is having a less than dominant quarter and a half. But hey, you want to pretend that you could do a better job and there is something more to your comments than annoying and baseless second guessing, be my guest. You can even change your ID and agree with yourself, if that makes you feel better. But if you want me to respect your opinion, you should probably start by at least acknowledging that phil jackson just might actually have a reason for doing what he's doing, even if you don't understand it. He might be wrong, but I doubt he's been picking coaching strategies by throwing darts at a board and has been extremely lucky for the last 15 years.

pfunk36,
I have played the game. And I've been on the blog long enough to know that you think you know more about basketball than anyone on earth.
It's a wonder that you're not the one with the 9 rings or uh, actually plays basketball in the NBA.
Posted by: Xodus | May 09, 2008 at 07:07 PM
AK
Actually Hubie's vocabulary does include
1. High Percentage shot (his fav)
2. Before he starts a sentence he always say "You know that.."
Posted by: lakeraholic | May 09, 2008 at 07:09 PM
pfunk36,
BTW, I know how Gasol gets his points. The point I was making was that Phil isn't calling plays from the sidelines. You would blame Phil Jackson if you spilled coffee on yourself and it burned you.
And you also slurp Kobe to no end. Kobe is 1-for-5 and you want him to go one-on-one instead of running the O so he can get his points within the offense.
Posted by: Xodus | May 09, 2008 at 07:10 PM
Jazz playing out of minds, only up by 10.
Lakers play poorly, many turnovers unforced, only down by 10. Perhaps maybe less, Kobe to line.
Sustain this play, the Jazz cannot. The Lakers abide only temporarily.
Posted by: Master Yoda | May 09, 2008 at 07:11 PM
farmar again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Posted by: VINNY | May 09, 2008 at 07:12 PM
* Worst game ever for Pau Gasol.
* Kobe needs to pick up his offensive game
* Vlad still in not effective
* Sasha missed a wide open and key 3 pointer
* Farmar continues his 3 month slump
Posted by: troy | May 09, 2008 at 07:14 PM
Down at half, only 9. Lakers give much help, very generous, many early presents. Perhaps snow in Utah, christmas time fools them?
To the rim, stronger they must go. Refs, the fouls will see more clearly if aggression apparent.

Xodus
Way to go.........address me........and not the argument
If you thought more of yourself.......you could be talking to a former pro.....
Would that validate my case more in your eyes?
Or can you address the facts in the case regardless of who presents it?
If Phil doesn't make adjustments at the half and Kobe doesn't look for his offense and become more aggressive it doesn't matter how many rings Phil has.
Posted by: pfunk36 | May 09, 2008 at 07:16 PM
As others have pointed out:
TOO. MUCH. TALKING. on this broadcast!
Man, Hubie is straight up wearing me out! SU SU SU!!
GO LAKERS!!
Posted by: Happy Camper | May 09, 2008 at 07:16 PM
Benjamin- Boozer's Buddies. Too funny.
Posted by: AZ LakerFan | May 09, 2008 at 07:16 PM
I'm telling you something, I'm really starting to like Lamar Odom. After Kobe and Sasha, he's my 3rd favorite Laker.
Posted by: troy | May 09, 2008 at 07:17 PM
I'd say we're in decent shape right now. We've been thoroughly outplayed with Kobe and Pau playing terribly.
Posted by: Xodus | May 09, 2008 at 07:17 PM
Lakeraholic,
Hubie's also a big fan of "You're "Fill in the name" before adding the "You know that "fill in the scenario." It's sort of his go to phrase. haha
AK

When turnovers cease, Jazz, no answer they have.
Posted by: Master Yoda | May 09, 2008 at 07:18 PM
Lakers down 9..could be worse..Pau hasn't really been a factor..neither has Farmar....Lakers are losing because of how they are playing...limit the turnovers...play better and believe..BELIEVE PLEASE!
Posted by: drew | May 09, 2008 at 07:18 PM
Pau is doing his best Kwame impression in the first half.
Posted by: John Barry | May 09, 2008 at 07:18 PM
a couple things!
Pau is having trouble getting to the rim. He's tall and trying to take people of the dribble and that's not what we want him to do. Were having trouble cuz Pau hasn't made his presence felt. He's not fighting for position..and though he hardly ever does and since I never have complained about it before..now is the time for him to man up!. Its the Semi's!! The stakes are higher..and Utah isn't guna lay down for a lanky 7fter just cuz he dons a Laker jersey. Phil will let every player have it during half time. Were down 9..and the way some souns here its as if were down 15 or 20. How many games have we came out flat? Many!! Stop acting likw we haven't been here before and have faith in 9 rings methods
Posted by: lakeraholic | May 09, 2008 at 07:18 PM
I PREDICT THE LAKERS TO LOSE!
Posted by: never | May 09, 2008 at 07:19 PM
* Pops in from Cave*
Ok... As bad as things look, it could be a helluva lot worse!!! Pau played like CRAP.. Farmar, Vlad AND Sasha havent hit stride yet.. We took their BEST shot and its still not out of reach considering Phil has a plan and can adjust... I'd be a liar if I said I expected a sweep this weekend.. but this game is DOABLE for us.. I mean.. We're playing like S@$# and we have a whole half to employ the "possum" technique and steal the game in the closing moments.. Ok.. back to the cave... GO LAKERS!!! Oh yea... thought I'd never say this in a post.. I think Luke would be better in tonights game then Vlad.. dunno why.. I just do

COMPTON

Not to worry. That was as poorly as the Lakers have played in weeks. They'll clean it up in the 2nd Half. The Lakers strong start indicates they know what they have to do. Now, with the kind of execution this team is capable of, the game should look very different from here on in. The Lakers are still the better team. They'll show their stuff in the next 24 minutes. The Jazz simply aren't good enough.
Posted by: Rick Friedman | May 09, 2008 at 07:21 PM
I like Kobe's patients right now but its time for him to go ahead and initiate the offense and let his team mates follow him because the rest of the guys are doing nothing. Pau hasn't done anything yet but hesitate to take the face up shot. What is he waiting for? Why let Utah have this game? If the lakers go ahead and take this game, Utah would submit and give up and series would be over.....

As silly as your statements were let me address them..........How many baskets has Phil Jackson scored this game? Is it even possible for him to score a basket?
If you are fine with Kobe just having 5 field goal attempts this half in a hostile environment on the road........then as AK would say.....Have at it
But if you want to win the game............I'm sorry I thought we played to win the game!!
Posted by: pfunk36 | May 09, 2008 at 07:23 PM
I hope the Lakers draft another young point guard. Ever since Javaris left, Farmar's game has dropped on both ends of the floor.
Posted by: never | May 09, 2008 at 07:23 PM
Wow. Utah is not noted for defense and we are turning the ball over. I am starting to have doubt the Lakers will be able to breath when they encounter the Celtics suffocating defense. KG will eat Pau alive if he continues this kind of a soft stance. This is the time I really wish Bynum is around. Not to mention Farmar and the rest of the bench are starting to look not so much of a mob but just ordinary dudes.
I'm feeling queasy again. C'mon Lakers! Go go go!!!!
Posted by: Lakergurl | May 09, 2008 at 07:24 PM
This has got to be the UGLIEST start I've ever seen. However:
- we're only down by 9
- Pau didn't play well
- Farmar didn't play well
- Kobe didn't play well
- no one really played will except for LO
2nd half:
- Kobe & Company will play better
- PJ will have them more focused
Conclusion:
- Jazz are in trouble
- Jazz are going down
- Jazz are flat on the floor crying
IT WILL HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pfunk36,
Actually, you were the one who went to personal attacks first, like you always do. Instead of having a discussion you throw insults and now that I throw them back you have a problem with it. So why did you do the same thing when you were addressing me?
I'll quote you if you don't remember:
"I can tell you have never played the game.."
and
"If you would do your homework you would know that Gasol gets his points primarily because of so much attention being thrown at Kobe
Stop being a robot and think and adapt.......Can you do that?"
But I guess I'm the one who's attacking others. lol
Posted by: Xodus | May 09, 2008 at 07:25 PM
We need to go Danicka Patrick on the Jazz!!
Yikes that was Low as well!!
lol
Posted by: lakeraholic | May 09, 2008 at 07:25 PM
Jazz have studied tape of Gasol. They're sending a second man to strip him of the ball as he makes his move.
Paul is an intelligent player. He bet he makes the necessary adjustments after halftime.
Jazz have decided to focus on Gasol in order to disrupt the ball movement of the Lakers. Look for the Lakers to wait pass the ball to Gasol until he is deep inside the paint.
He was getting passes too far from the basket in the first half.
Lakers need to play their passing game, the best in the league.
Kobe has not been that much of a factor in the first half.
He will quiet the crowd in the second half.
Look for some iso for Kobe.
Posted by: LakerinBC | May 09, 2008 at 07:26 PM
One more thing.. excuse if its typos.. i got pizza in one hand... This is where Kobe "could" become a lil more selfish if Pau keeps playing frustrated. Its obvious, everytime he puts the ball down, the Jazz go low and pinch him.. The 1st 5mins of the 2nd half will set the tone for the Lakers.. they cant let the Jazz get too cocky.. sometimes ya gotta pimp smack a ho if the count aint right.. tonights count aint right...
Posted by: complex brotha | May 09, 2008 at 07:26 PM
pfunk36,
I never said I was OK with Kobe having 5 shot attempts. Unlike you, I understand that a Kobe offense isn't going to get it done. We need to run the normal offense and Kobe will get his points. Utah is playing too well defensively and offensively for him to try and beat them on his own.
