Finally, some news
After a few days of quiet, we finally have something to talk about. First, there's the pageantry, in case you missed the news: Kobe Bryant will win the first MVP award of his 12-year career.
We'll just let that hang there, because it makes a lot of people really happy.
In other news, that little matter of who the Lakers will play in Round 2 has been determined. Over a team dinner Friday night, the Lakers watched the Jazz polish off the Rockets in Salt Lake 113-91 to close the series in six games. The Jazz will head to Staples for Game 1 on Sunday. Both teams know they're facing a more formidable opponent. Utah sees a team with more depth and talent, the Lakers one with more discipline, plenty of skill, and a lot more physicality. Utah has the bulk to deal with LA's length, and they're certainly an efficient bunch. Fortunately, the Lakers aren't exactly a bunch of slackers, either.
There will be plenty of subplots in the series, but none perhaps more interesting than Derek Fisher's.
Not everyone loves Mitch Kupchak.
No real shock here, but don't look for Andrew Bynum before next season.

What is up with the links???? Two of them are no longer available??

Jazz fans don't have love for Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Derek Fisher and the Lakers? Well, let it be known!
Posted by: never | May 03, 2008 at 11:03 AM
It's great that Kobe is going to get the MVP, but I think we all know that it's the rings that he's after. He's not a "Gollum" like Cassel. I was watching/snoozing the game last night, and I heard a comment from Sam (I wuz) and he talked as if he's worn green his entire career. It was just a few weeks ago he was trying to find a next career seat on the Clipper bench next to Mike D. (we shoulda won the finals when he coached us, he built the perfect playoff team, three post up players, Magic, Worthy and Perkins, but they were too beat up from the seaon to make it through the playoffs). The Jazz will be a tough team, every game may be close and physical, but let's hope we still sweep them.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING LAKER NATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO...LAST NIGHT...let me tell you...whew! There was a hottie with the naughty body down at the store while I was picking up beer. She was staring at the beer like she was a little confused so I asked her what the problem was. She turned and kinda smiled and said that she wanted to try a new beer and asked me if I would recommend something. Now I personally prefer DOS EQUIS, but not all people do. I suggested it to her and she grabbed a 6 pack of bottles and went to leave. I stopped her and told her that a 6 pack wasn't enough for 2 people(like that 1 guys?). She said it was just her. I asked her what she was doing for the night and she said "nothing..."(oh this is getting good). When she asked me what I was doing I told her I was going to practice my guitar and blog on the LA Times Lakers Blog. Her eyes lit up when I said Lakers!! "OH your a Lakers fan?" You know how this conversation ends...Anyway we come back to my place and things started to get goin' if you know what I mean...when she suddenly turned to me and said in a voice that seemed a bit too contralto for me "Reports out of LA tonight that Lakers star Kobe Bryant will be named the 2007-2008 NBA MVP!"...WTF...HUH?!?!?! F*CK I'm dreamin!?!?! I open my eyes and look up at the tube and...no I'm not!! FINALLY Kobe is the MVP.!! I'm so happy I want to twist the nipples off a parrot!!!(no link to a pic you sick McTwists!) Congratulations Kobe!! It was long overdue and everybody knows it!!!
Atlanta is makin' the c's look like the D's,not quite the F's yet though. We finally know who we sweep next...Utah...even the name sounds drab, kinda tired actually...Utah. Sounds like your saying "you too" while yawning. Great...we get to see the lovechild of Barry Manilow and Frankenstein...Andre Kirilenko.
http://www.sportguide.ru/photos/kirilenko_andrei_1.jpg
Then there is Deron(I don't like the shape of your head and/or face)Williams... He is a great player but not a series changer against us.
http://espn.go.com/photo/2006/1018/nba_g_williams_268x362.jpg
Maybe his head isn't proportional..? I dunno...I digest. Carlos Boozer...I have a lot of respect for any man that can drink like he does and perform in the NBA. Anyway, this matchup poses some interesting questions. Can the Lakers sweep the Jazz? Do the Lakers have the bench to deal with the Jazz? Why did they keep the name the same when they moved from New Orleans to Utah...where there is no jazz? And lastly...and I think most importantly...Why is there a half naked bum in my bed?
Inhale now as I blow smoke at the screen...

I can't wait to see this matchup. This will be a great coaching battle between two of the best. Jerry Sloan will get at least two technicals in the series, and the Utah fans will probably throw debris onto the court as the Lakers take a 3-0 lead. Lakers fans: don't count on a game five back at Staples. This series will be over in four.
Go Lake Show!
Kobe finally gets the award!

complex brotha,
thanks for keeping the dream alive.
Posted by: Benjamin | May 03, 2008 at 11:29 AM
how come everything in the NBA (among other things) is "leaked" days before it happens? Kinda ruins the moment. Did I really need to know Durant won the rookie of the year days before it was announced? Now the Kobe MVP is of course, "leaked", just like everything else... just takes some of the enjoyment out of the moment that it actually happens...
Posted by: TaosHum | May 03, 2008 at 11:37 AM
"the moment" was made for tv and marketing anyway. We still have the moment anyway, we just know the outcome. It's all so contrived, the Kenneth Lay of the NBA shows up and acts like he's full of integrity and honor.
To the whole thing I say "bah."

Oh, for the love of....
Look, I frequent a great many blogs around the interwebs. All are different. Some have strict rules about content posted in regards to comments, some allow you to post whatever you want to. AK/BK happen to allow pretty much anything, as long as it fits in with their criteria regarding language and appropriateness and things of that nature. Sometimes I read the long roll call posts, sometimes I dont: I love Lakertom's musings, but sometimes I don't bother reading his posts cause I don't feel like it- - It's a choice, I'm not forced to read them. IF you have that much of a problem with them taking up space on the precious screen, there are a great deal other blogs just as good as this one out there. Feel free to read those.
This is a community blog- We have more people comment on our blog then I see in most of the team sport blogs out there. That is in part because the wise and powerful lords over the blog alllow us to converse, bicker, cheer, whatever, whenever we feel like it. If a man wants to celebrate with a "roll call", let him- we're fans, derived from "fanatic" WE'RE ALL CRAZY SOB'S, AND PROUD OF IT.
Ugh, that is all. Save the mocking for the Jazz-ercise, let's try to be happy together, mmmmmkay?
Ok, that's probably not possible. but let's try to kill each other less, at the very least.
Rollcallpostssuck--
Every time Mike Penburthy's name is posted on the internet, an Angel gets his wings.
The angel thanks you.

Quote of the night.
"Our confidence is definitely not shaken,'' Garnett insisted.
Pierce has apparently seen enough of Atlanta. He had already cleared out of the locker room by the time reporters were let him. The only thing left behind was a banana peel.
I've been in sales long enough to know when some one lacks confidence. They say things, unprompted like KG did to boost their confidence.
KG - When you look in the mirror Sunday AM, keep telling yourself that over an over again.
"Our confidence is definitely not shaken".....Our Confidence....
Its now down to a best of one series.

Good Afternoon Charles---Good Afternoon Everybody...
Kobe MVP--never any doubt really---or there shouldn't have been anyway....
Cletics lose again--I can dig it Shaft---can the undreamable really happen--I doubt it--I see the frickin' Celtics wiping the floor with the Hawks on Suday unfortunately---but there is hope---GO HAWKS !!!
I see the Utah series going at least 6, if not 7--it's going to be a real dog fight---and I agree with others who say that game 1 is the most dangerous--hope we can bring focas and purpose and.....wait for it....DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE PICK & ROLL PICK & ROLL PICK & ROLL....
Jazz fans are at least in the top three for world's most obnoxious fans--maybe even number one (the other two being Boston and Portland)---I hope the Lakers use the disrespect of Fisher by those morons as inspiration....
I dig the roll call above with all the former players---kudos Mr. Sucks....some great memories in that list indeed....
AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!
GO LAKERS !!!

Hopefully, this is the first of a chain of MVPs for Bryant.
I'm not sure how they can deny him next year if the Lakers roll off 65 plus wins.
Then again, I'm sure "they" can find a way.
Also, let me take this time to say that there is no way KG is a MVP, even the year he won it. That man is so overrated. Yes, I know, it's a regular season award, but we fans point to certain players' performances in the pressure situations as an "I told you so". Meaning, I know KG did well in the regular season, but true fans saw beyond the surface. The guy is almost one-dimensional on the offense end. All he has is a fade-away jump shot, so he can't be the guy with the ball when the team needs a bucket. Defensive player of the year, sure. MVP? No way, Jose.
And Chris Paul? How can you be the Most Valuable on your team when the team runs just as well or better when your backup (Janerro Pargo) plays? So Jannero Pargo should be in the top 5 for the MVP voting, if CP3 is up there.
Posted by: Amazing_Happens | May 03, 2008 at 12:00 PM
Bynum's words are starting to bother me. Here's Crynum's quote:
"At this point, I'd have to train for a good month just to be able to go out there and play."
At this point. At this point…that means from right now. This now, right here and now. Ok, so from this point right here and now you should be able to train for one month and still be back in time for the Celtics.
What’s the problem?
Oh…you got a boo boo? Poow wittew baby…
What about all your other teammates playing with injuries? What about Odom playing with a torn labrum last year? Come on Bynum, you 7 foot poodle, you're letting your teammates down.
At least make an effort. Huh? Is this too much to ask?

I don't remember uncle cliffy being on the Lakers, and I certainly don't remember him being on the Lakers 91-92. Is that a joke? I mean, he did fumble the Jerome Kersey pass at the last seconds to lose the game for Portland at the Forum in 1991, but I don't think that's cause to claim he was an actual Laker!
Not only is complaining about the roll call perhaps the dumbest thing I've ever seen on this board (worse than any big calves argument by Mike T), but the post wasn't even accurate... unless I'm mistaken here, and Cliff Robinson somehow played for BOTH the Blazers and the Lakers in 91-92.
Posted by: Tim-4-Show | May 03, 2008 at 12:19 PM
Just heard on the ESPN radio 710.. Rick Bucher reporting that according to his doctors Andrew Bynum should be ok to play in the Western confernece Finals if the Lakers where to make it that far...He also when on to say that becuase of the amount of questions that have been lingering about his injury, Andrew felt frastrated and he wanted to make a worst case scenerio statment...
This is great news, but it's also news from Bucher for all people......

Wes,
I don't get the Bynum bashing. You've got a 20 year old kid with a KNEE injury.
His knee still isn't healed.
He hasn't played any ball in almost 4 months.
Probably the first time he's ever had a major injury.
He is out of shape.
And if he man's up and risks all......maybe he can play 5 or so games.
Even if he did play, he would probably hurt us more than help being so out of shape and having no timing.
I just don't see why people question OUR future franchise player. If he could of come back in March or April....OK. Now I'm glad he's going to wait and heal up fully.

As long as the roll call isn't consistently the very first post of the day, I really don't care.
As for Utah, the refs were really letting them get into the Rockets, and I expect it'll be the same for the Lakers. On the super-slow-mo replays you could see Deron grabbing the off-arm of the ball-handler, Boozer throwing low elbows to get position on rebounds etc.... it's gonna be a brutal series, let's hope the rest allowed our boys to heal up because they're gonna be heading into a war!

Wes,
Can't blame you for being annoyed with AB's statement. I am sure most of the Laker fans would feel the same way about what he said. Bynum's statement is a reflection of his immaturity. I guess he is still way too young to understand his responsibility towards his team and his fans, and to appreciate the great opportunity before him.
Before anyone start jumping on me, please understand that I am not asking him to return prematurely and risking further injury. But a statement like this, "At this point, I'd have to train for a good month just to be able to go out there and play", just does'nt show me his desire to be back!
Posted by: Robyn | May 03, 2008 at 01:02 PM
Maybe Clifford Robinson can get that game replayed, much like that flik with Kurt Russell and Robin Williams (Best Of Times)--and this time he can catch the ball --well maybe not....
GO LAKERS !!!
Posted by: Floyd | May 03, 2008 at 01:05 PM
Of course maybe we could also replay game 2 1984 finals and Magic wouldn't pass the ball to Worthy who passed it away and we would have gone back to L.A. with a 2-0 series lead---
Not to mention Don Nelson's lucky ass shot....
Is the Time Tunnel still available?
Good thing the near future will atone for such crocks of crap...
GO LAKERS !!!

Willis Reed in the making?
Not only because Bynum might surprise, but because Marvin Williams hurt his knee so bad he hasn't attempted to bend it since the game!
Yet, it's game 7, in Boston Garden, and it may as well be for an NBA title because for the Hawks, this will be a historic series if they dethrone the Celts...
Will Marvin Williams come out of the locker room with ice and knee braces and actually take the floor???
Come on Hawks!

There were actually 2 different Clifford Robinsons that played in the NBA at the same time. Clifford R. Robinson from UConn played for Portland. Clifford T. Robinson from USC played for New Jersey, Washington and for the Lakers for a few games.

Just a suggestion. You guys should put a date on the video titles so we know if they are current or not. Most of them are practice reports and it's hard to discern which is new.

Floyd,
It's amazing how one play can change the landscape of a whole series! This is why having an MVP player can make so much difference!

HmrHed, thanks for posting the results for the Predictathon. And congrats to Benjamin. Good stuff.
So much pontificating about Bynum... He'll be back in the lineup when his knee is good and ready. That might be next season... or it might be in the WCF. Let's just wait and see without bashing him, his work ethic, his warrior's heart, etc.
Ariza is going to be the next Cooper. The box score won't always demonstrate just how effective this guy will be (like Coop), but he'll be a monster stopper when he gets back into the lineup. Which will be soon. I have a good feeling about it.
Until then... we've been winning, we'll keep winning. Fo', fo', fo, all the way to glory.

A WORD ABOUT THE ROLL CALL ARGUMENT:
Enough with this. Mamba is welcome and encouraged to continue doing them. They're popular with many on the site, and easy to pass by for those who don't want to read them. Those of you who go out of your way, either by cuting and pasting massive posts specifically to be an ass simply won't get your posts through.
It's really not complicated. The roll calls have been part of the site for a while, they hurt nobody, and are welcome to be a part of the community.

I've been reading this blog for a long time and now finally have good reason to post. I grew up in So Cal and moved to Utah about 15 years ago but have remained faithful to the Purple and Gold all this time. I took a lot of heat during the series in the late nineties from all my co-workers. Here's to hoping this series turns out better than those. GO LAKERS!

BK,
Thank for you for stepping up on the issue of the roll call. Another example of your and Andy’s outstanding leadership on the blog. The issues come and go. The Blog rules.
Still haven’t heard you or AK chime in on my statement that 12 Lakers players are currently playing the best basketball of their careers, which I find to be almost unbelievable. Would love to know if you agree or disagree and have ever seen another team with so many players peaking. Thanks.
Players playing their best right now include: Kobe, Pau, Drew, Jordan, Lamar, Sasha, Ronny, DJ, Luke, Coby, and Derek.

The Outlaw,
"Ariza is going to be the next Cooper."
I agree and like the comparison. The Lakers should consider hiring Coop as a special defensive coach to tutor Trevor. Ala Kareem and Drew.
Let's see. We could get Magic to tutor Farmar, West to tutor Sasha...We already got Rambus to tutor Ronny...
