Anyone want to hang on the Riverwalk?

San Antonio finally got their road win against New Orleans in the Western Conference semifinals, and fair to say it came at a pretty good time. Game 7, 91-82. As it probably should be, the road to the Finals, and hopefully a parade, still goes through the champs.
Plenty more to come tomorrow.

Well, we are certainly going to get any exciting final four, that much is certain. I would be shocked if at least one of the series didn't go seven. The spurs are the team that has the best chance of beating us, its going to tough. I hope we can pull this out.

Repost: Just posted at the very end of the last thread...
Regarding the resigning of Lamar and Drew:
We must do both end of discussion. Lamar has proven that he is EXTREMELY important to the success of this team and has been playing at such a high level recently. Drew is a no brainer. If anyone of the "big 4" is expendable its gotta be Pau (even though I think he's signed for a few more years, anyone know exactly?). He is good but not great and semi repetitive at the center position. Now don't get me wrong, I like Pau and want him on the Lakers for a long time but if I had to chose 3 out of the 4 players Pau would be the odd man out.
Lamar = Finals MVP

Absolutely, Brian, if you're buying the tickets to the game.
I think we got the opponent we deserve. Good. It's going to be a special series.
And we'll win it.
Let's get going.

I honesty think we are in trouble. The mathups in this series are a nightmare for us. Parker v Fisher will be tough speed wise. Bowen will pester Kobe the entire series. We dont have a Duncan stopper yet Duncan can at least contain Gasol. THe only clear advantage we have is Lamar Odom, they have no answer for him. The fact that we are well rested should be a nice advantage for game 1. We have to win the first 2 games! I would have been so much more comfortable if the Hornets won.

Ok, we get the Spurs. I'm ignoring all the Spurs hate coming from some people around here. Big Shot Bob dirty? Where the hell does anyone get off saying anything bad about Will Smith's long lost bro? Western Conference Finals 02. Robert Horry could come to my house and flagrantly foul me a hundred times and I would ask him for seconds and call him sir. Jeez. Okay, that might have been a sort of odd declaration. But I hope somebody sees my point. I respect the Spurs. I don't like the spurs, I don't fear the spurs, but I respect the Spurs. Except Bowen. I wouldn't spit on that guy if he was on fire.
Posted by: | May 19, 2008 at 09:03 PM
whoops. new computer- that last vaguely homoerotic posting about Horry was mine.
also, from the last post
"On a side note, if you're thinking that May 19th, 2008 marks the first time "chillax" and "loggy" were used within ten minutes of each other, I'm inclined to concur with that hunch. 'Twas a groundbreaking day for vocabulary, indeed" - AK
I don't think there was a single comment on the last thread observing that that whole post was friggin hilarious. I was actually thinking exactly that. Brilliant work. I can finally almost see why you get paid for this.

First of all, let's get that name right. Its not the Riverwalk.
That place stinks. Its nothing but an open sewer. A place drunks use to urinate. For the next week, we call it the Open Sewer Stroll.
Second, ...........I'll get to that later. Dancing with the Stars just came on.
Posted by: Fairweather Fatty | May 19, 2008 at 09:11 PM
I hear what you're saying, John B.
But the truth is this: if we didn't have to go through the defending champs on our way to the championship, the season would be tainted.
Gasol gives Duncan nightmares.
Kobe will take advantage of Bowen, although Udoka is a good defender, too.
Don't forget that we'll have another defensive stopper in Ariza.
Lamar should average 18/12/6 in this series.
This is going to be a tough road to the Finals, but what better way to gain momentum? By beating the reigning champions, then heading into Detroit with a 2-0 lead.

Outlaw....if and when the Lakers make it through to the Finals, the Eastern team will have homecourt advantage by virtue of better regular season records. Detroit won 59 games this past season as opposed to the Lakers' 57.

What I wouldn't give to have been a fly on the wall at the Lakers team dinner tonight. I think it would have been inescapable to Kobe & Co. that there's a reason the Spurs are the defending champs, and that it is right that the road to the NBA Championship should go through San Antonio. Those guys are poise under pressure. They have been through this before together and the Spurs have the best coach in the NBA, after PJ.
That said, the Spurs are a team the Lakers know well. The coaching staff knows what they can do. There is no player on the Spurs who is a mystery. The ways that Pop changes up things is well documented.
What's to come is a battle of which team can execute better for the most minutes per game. This is Death Match 2008, pure and simple. Based on what we've seen in the Playoffs, so far, this must be the Bench Mob's best series to date. The Machine must be well oiled at every appearance. I hope to see Mbenga for at least three minutes per half, to body-up Duncan and take him out of his rhythm.
Most of all, great Defense and consistent rebounding. I'll trade fewer points from Lamar for a greater effort around the boards. If the Lakers can master it, frequent rotations in defensive assignments would keep the Spurs from getting comfortable. And we'll need early time-outs if the Spurs take us out of our rhythm. This is an epic battle of wills and wits.
We know the Lakers are rested. If they're both rested AND ready, they can keep the Spurs on their heels from the opening tip. Fasten your seat belts. Stock up the beer. And remember: This is our team. This is our year. Go Lakers!

Laker Tom,
Here are excerpts from an old post about Mitch deserving the EOTY award. Some were derived of players acquired by Danny Ainge via draft/trade.
"1. I believe Signing Javaris is comparable to the Big Baby
1a. He was critical in acquiring Gasol.
2. James Posey was a Free Agent that knew of the makings of KG and Ray-ray coming to Boston.
3.Danny Ainge and Mchale are Celtics alumni. Talk about assist pass.
3a. Jerry West was no longer with the Grizzlies, even though the topic was touched upon last year. West admitted in a LA Times article that he was not involved.
4. Off season trades are much easier compared to during season trades.
5. Andrew Bynum and Farmar were playing well and same conference teams do not like to help opponents that way.
5a. Hence making Minny to Boston a lot easier.
6. We had a better offer for KG. Adding credence to the Celtics assist pass.
7. You have to consider the trades Mitch didnt make. Kept Bynum and Odom. No O' Neal. No Kidd for a needed PF/C in Gasol.
8. Got Fisher, didn't resign Smush.
9. Cook and Evans = For Ariza.
10. Kwame's gone.
11. The state of the Lakers was fragile at best in the end of the 06-07 season, through summer, training camp, and the beggining of the season. The managing of the team and Kobe's grant was a bigger burden.
11a. We still have the best player in the league, and he is happy to be a Laker.
11b. Extended the 9 ring coach to a 2 year contract, and the team including the newest player are clicking in his offense.
Mitch deserves Executive of the Year.
Respectfully.
Charles"

Spurs four years ago are no longer the Spurs of today.
Can you imagine a player like Jennero Pargo could put them at the brink of losing the huge lead? The Hornets were a wild bunch, I didn't expect Byron Scott to coach in that manner like releasing wild horses them from corral taking wild and early shots as if they were just playing during the season. He should no better being a Showtime Laker. It was only an individual game, no teamwork, so spacing and poor decision-making. They really deserved to lose this game. Parker and Ginolbli are still good slashers, but not as agile as Deron and/or CP2.
Fisher is the only one who is old with the Lakers but he destroyed the Alamo defense with his 0.4 sec shot, a shot that broke down the spirit of every texan. On the other hand, Spurs has our former Laker money player, Robert Horry. So this will be battle of the olds. It is not a disrespect to the Champs but throughout the year Spurs showed not enough energy to kick in or the endurance to run with the Lakers and put a transitional defense, break up the passing game, the Kobe factor, the Laker pick and roll. Bowen is effective when Kobe becomes an individualistic player not when he is a playmaker. Lakers lost to SA when Gasol was still with Grizz'. This time, I don't think Duncan can execute his pivot moves and pass by the tall hands of Pau, LO and Vlad. Those are the three long players that produced a solid D and led to easy fast breaks for the Lakers against Nuggets and Jazz. Kobe, Fisher and Sasha are the crazy mice that steal balls from a cornered player. Ariza will be added to these mice group and will provide additional spark on the bench,
Wow, this is a great feeling - no more Smush, no more Kwame, no more Cookie to break our hearts and we will be playing against an old San Antonio. For the first time after three dark years, our faith on strenght of purple and gold has been renewed. I am not an everyday optimist here but with this match-up I say Lakers will take the WC in 4-2. Mark my words, Kobe & Co. will play in June.

Abbott, Adande, Broussard, and Ford (Lakers in 7)
Hollinger (Lakers in 5)
Sheridan (Spurs in 7)
Stein, Thorpe (Spurs in 6)
Am I mistaken to think that we're more likely to steal one than they are?
Whoever is more aggressive will win. No one is more aggressive than Kobe. Not Duncan, not Parker, not Manu, and certainly not Horry.
Just need to stay home on the shooters. Let Pau and Lamar protect the paint.
Posted by: mel | May 19, 2008 at 10:07 PM
A couple of posters have mentioned Ariza - he is the wild card. SA doesn't know how to game plan for LA with him. Who will he guard? Who will guard him? If the Lakers ever go small with Kobe, Ariza, Fish, Odom & Sasha they will be far more athletic and quicker than SA - 4-5 minutes/game with that lineup in certain spots could result in some easy baskets and tire the Finleys and Horrys. With game 1 less than 48 hours after tonight's game, it is imperative the Lakers take game one. Ariza will be the key to the whole series - you heard it here first at 10:08 PM Monday 5/19.

Shoot, bronxlakerfan, you're right. My mistake. Well, shoot, then how about the Lakers heading back to L.A. with a 1-1 record against Detroit?
I think you're right about the Spurs: they were killing the Hornets tonight with their three-point shooting. They don't always shoot that high of a percentage from downtown, but when they get hot they're deadly. We don't need to double Duncan, though. Pau matches up well with him.
Tough series, indeed. But we're not the number one seed for nothing.

The Spurs were tired... I mean exhausted during the fourth quarter. Had they been playing against the Jazz as their lead was dwindling, they would have lost. They tried to keep their legs alive for defense, and pretty much failed, and they clearly had no legs at all on offense. They were used up from a long season and two rough playoff series.
Does anyone really think they'll be fresh on Wednesday? Or that they'll be able to fight for more than two quarters?
Lakers take game 1 on a platter. Game 2 follows the same pattern, with an element of mild desperation on the Spurs' side because they don't want to be down 2-0 again. But of course they lose and say to themselves we'll repeat what we did with the Hornets. Problem is the Lakers will unquestionably steal a game in SA and be back home to close leading 3-1. And of course they will close.
I agree with Hollinger: Lakers in 5.
Posted by: Tsphere | May 19, 2008 at 10:42 PM
Okay, it's the Spurs. Game on!
I think we match up better with the Spurs than the Hornets. Fish can take care of Parker, like he did AI and CP3. Nobody can handle Kobe, Bowen can only try. Pau battles Duncan to a standstill and Vladdy can match up with Oberto. That leaves LO as our x-factor. Ginobili may be a feared slasher but Lamar's length and quickness will enable him to keep pace. No way Ginobili guards LO when he drives aggressively on the offensive end. We have better shooters coming off the bench. And they're younger and more athletic, too. Plus we have another x-factor - Ariza. I can't wait for Wednesday.
Lakers in 5.

And we are off to the WCF!
Spurs vs. Lakers - Round 1!
Gloves are off and we are ready to fight!
Those dissin on Fish thinking that's our weak spot - just remember he has the bitter taste of losing when it counted most recently. Fish had his family worries and didn't play so well - he will want to redeem himself most and this is his stage. I expect Fish to get rid of the ghosts from last year and go off in this series. He is our wild card.
And bring on Trevor - don't care when - I just want him to play - make him annoy Parker and dunk right in Horry's mug.
BENCH MOB - show up and DEFEND the fort!
LO and PG will come out swinging because they aren't going to waste this chance. MVP won't have to do much urging with this group - they can dump the Spurs right back into the Riverwalk and march upright into the Finals.
GO LAKERS!!!

I disagree with this analysis. Fish will play decent defense on Parker and force him to go towards the help defense.
Pop was so pissed the Lakers got Pau because he plays Duncan straight up and Duncan has problems with Pau's length. Remembe the last game we played them?
Kobe is Kobe and neither Bowen, Manu or Udoka can single cover him leaving LO, Ariza, Vlad, Luke and Sasha open. Our bench is stronger and the only real problem is Horry playing dirty trying to take Kobe out with cheap shot to the back. That concern would make it fair game for Mbenga to take out Timmy hard in retaliation. Ira and Luke can help here to give hard fouls.

I think the Lakers need to win in 6. I don't know if the rest of the team, except Kobe and Fish, can handle the pressure of a game 7 even if it's at home (hope I'm wrong on this).
For the series against the Spurs, the guard play, I think, is the most crucial. If they can stop Parker's or Ginobili's penetration, they have a better chance. Minimize or shut down the lay-ups or even the mid-range jumpshots. Let them shoot 3's all night long.
The Lakers just need to attack and not settle for jumpshots. If the Spurs turn them into a jumpshooting team, it's gonna be a short-lived series.

This Laker run is like a Hollywood script.
Lakers take on the defending champs and WC nemesis Spurs - only this time it is the young Lakers versus the old Spurs to start off the new Kobe-
Bynum dynasty even though Baby B has to watch from the nursery. Then Lakers face the Pistons for a revenge match of the '04 Finals when the young Pistons beat the old Lakers but this time it is the young Lakers versus the old Pistons. Karma comes full circle.
The side of the court to watch will be wichever half of the court the Lakers are on the offense and Surs are on defense. This will be where the story of the series will be written.
On the side of the court where the Spurs are on the offensive, the Laker defense will win. The Spurs have a problem creating offense-that has been shown time and again in the playoffs. This Laker team doesn't have a great defense yet, but it has shown the ability to make stops in critical points. The key is stopping penetration by Parker and Ginobili. When Spurs can do this, then their old 3 pt shooters can get open, and Duncan can do his damage from the inside. Too bad we don't have Bynum in this series because the Twin Towers would have suffocated any SA penetration. But Gasol and Odom have length and Pau is capable of single coverage on Duncan. Our x factor - Ariza- will be very useful versus Ginobili and sometimes on Parker. This is the main reason why Mitch traded for Ariza - to stop Ginobili!
Trevor is going to be the freshest player from both teams while Manu is tired. With Ariza containing Ginobili and Gasol bottling Duncan on single coverage, the Spurs have zero offense - zip nada. Mr. Longoria can not beat the Lakers by himself.

Duncan vs Gasol.
Duncan's bank shot is the most overrated shot in basketball. People make it seem he never misses when in fact he does and quite alot. Gasol has the speed and the length to bother Duncan. I don't think this is a bad matchup at all. Duncan compliains on literally every call against him and I thought Gasol was a whiner. Do not double Duncan.
Manu vs Vlad/Walton/Ariza
FORCE HIM RIGHT. PERIOD.
Kobe vs Bowen.
No one can guard Kobe, Bowen included. Popovich employs the hack-of-blank. The Lakers should bring in Newble and Mihm to do hack-of--bowen.
Odom vs Thomas/Oberto.
Major Mismatch. Should exploit every time down the floor.
