What's Spanish for "monkey shed from one's back?"
Give this much to Pau Gasol. When he finds himself in prime position to end a fruitless streak of playoff games, dude don't eff around. Carrying an 0-12 clip into yesterday's brouhaha against Denver, El Spaniard brought his A-est of A-games to help manufacture a 128-114 victory. 36 points on 14-20 shooting, 100% at the stripe (8-8), 16 boards, 8 dimes, 3 swats, an outcome reminiscent of the big man assistance Kobe Bryant used to receive back in the day. Gasol's ability to take over the paint came in large part due to George Karl's decision to have power forward Kenyon Martin guard Kobe, a tactic that made life tough on the Mamba, but sacrificed a vulnerable paint to Gasol's talents.
Lamar Odom found oodles of opportunities offered inside en route to his 17/14 tally. Even small forwards were able to capitalize on the mismatches K-Mart's assignment created, as Luke Walton poured in 16 off the bench, often posting up smaller Denverians now forced to guard him on the blocks. Throw in a fantastic display of team-wide ball movement and the Nugs spent much of the game on their heels.
As one might guess, both a catalyst and recipient of the crisp passes was Gasol, who often made snapping his tough history a seemingly sweat-free affair (even if the mission was one of King Kong-sized weight). Especially when compared to the Nuggets' collective conscious, which was mostly hot and bothered,
complete with technicals, flagrants and early showers, perfectly mirroring the temperature of their team bus. If Pau's ability to handle pressure was being questioned due to the Memphis fizzles, consider that debate closed. For that matter, any worries of a Laker letdown appear unprompted, at least for the time being.
The winning box score was the first step along the road to what the NBA hopes (whether they admit it or not) will be a Lakers-Celtics finals.
It's obviously too early to start making "Beat Boston" signs, but the fans' hopes were certainly buoyed after a victory so one-sided that even the town's resident cynic couldn't find much to mock. While emphasizing again that work in need of finishing still remains, Staples hasn't felt so "2000-2002" since, well, 2000-2002.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING LAKER NATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great game...but I don't know if I can call it a good win because they looked a bit out of sync...OK...I have to admit something. Ever since I was awarded the blogger of the day award...I have felt a certain amount of pressure to perform.(No I didn't take any performance enhancing drugs...well...) How could I live up to those goals set so high(lol) by Mamba24? Today...today I have finally figured it out...I can't! WTF MAMBA?!?! Blogger of the day?!?!?! How am I supposed to live up to that? What do I look like? A free F***kin' spirit or something?!?! What...? Did I bust my ass all my life to get noticed for something? You would think I enjoy this S**t or something! That was a pretty bad game for Kobe. Yeah he made amends for it with 18 points in the final 8 min, but I think he's going to play game 2 with a different approach. I think we'll see less forced shots and less trash talking.
I think the play of his teammates took Kobe by surprise a bit, and he was playing the game like it was last year against the Suns and he was teaming up with Smush and Kwame.
Those guys are gone, Kobe buddy.

George Carl quote
I think the film will show it was the Los Angeles Lakers who tore us up,” Karl said. “Gasol played great, don’t get me wrong. He had a lot of great decisions for him to get a lot of easy baskets.”
Karl said he was glad Game 2 isn’t until Wednesday night at Staples Center, giving the Nuggets a chance to adjust. The third and fourth games in the best-of-seven series will be played in Denver.
“I don’t think anyone in our locker room is deflated,” Karl said. “We know that we can play better than we did, and defense is probably the first thing we’ll address.” Ok right George like your team is going to somehow play miraculous stellar defense suddenly. What a charade.Lakers in sweep.

I'm tired of hearing Boston's 22-5 record against the west as if that means a whole lot...
IMO, if you are in the NFC East and have a good division record that's entirely different then if you are in the AFC East and play each team in the NFC East only once.
It's still impressive to go 3-1 against the NFC East, but not as impressive as going 6-2 or 5-3.
Similarly, what would happen if you played the Spurs/Lakers/Suns 4 times instead of two? What's the probability of losing to a sleeper team if you played Portland/Golden State 4 times instead of two?
There about 10 teams in the West that can beat you any nite. So there's a big diff in playing them 40 times and playing them 20. If 33% of your schedule is hard, that is much different then 67% of your schedule being hard.
You get credit for doing good during your 33%, but it's not the same.
I think that's solid logic.

"I think the play of his teammates took Kobe by surprise a bit, and he was playing the game like it was last year against the Suns and he was teaming up with Smush and Kwame." -Wes
I was planning to make a similar post. Kobe almost lost this game for us. He forced at least a half dozen shots after the second team created a 19 point lead. Not only did he miss the shots, he took the entire team out of their game.

Good Morning Mamba24, Good Morning Charles, Good Morninng Laker Nation!
It's a beautiful day in Laker Nation this morning!
Charles, I hope that game was a good tonic for you and that you are feeling better.
Not the best game for Kobe, but he was being well covered by K Mart and recognized the doubles he was getting form Camby and passed out to Pau or LO to get to the hole. Offense well run. Great passing all aroung. He will adjust for the next game, as he did in the fourth yesterday.
And for those who keep calling for Luke's head, look at the game the guy brought yestrerday! I'll take that every time out!
15 to 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LET'S GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anthony Carter is preparing game tape to send to the league to try and prove Kobe intentionally hits him in the face all the time.
Good luck with that Anthony. Maybe if you stopped playing defense with your face you wouldn't have that problem.

Good Morning Charles---Godd Morning Everyone....
Lakers took care of business yesterday- with some outstanding passing for some easy dunks--yee frickin' haw indeed!
Lamar continues to go to the basket and rebound well---when he was off the floor, the Nuggets had sizable runs it seemed...
Pau seems to be somewhat better than Kwame....
The offense seems like a well oiled machine--with Rad, Sasha, Famar, and Puke all hitting their shots pretty much-and again our passing was nothing short of brilliant---
I would still like to see our defense catch up with our offense....
Positives For Puke: he played an overall good game with only a few miscues--used his size mismatches well, supplied a laugh getting stuffed--only 7 years left on his contract...
I think Denver has the most tattoos per square inch of skin in the NBA---I would really like to see several of their players, ie The Answer to the Question Nobody Asked, Car-Marsh Mello Man, and Kenyon My Favorite Martian, just to go ahead take the plunge and get tattoos covering their entire faces...
Of course Car Mello-Michelein Man's face would require a lot more ink--he's jet puffed you know---and he also doubles for the Pillsbury Dough Boy as it were, seemingly....
As for that other cat (forget his name) with the highly understated tattoos (is that a maze game or packman you play on his arms?), he may need an eraser soon...
Kenyon Martian is so ugly he scares my daughter as well as both of our cats---can they please not give us close ups of him any more the entire series?
Anyway, I think we will play Utah in the second round and we need our defense to really step up to the challange---it will be a real dog fight---hopefully Bynum will be back...that and a a cache of new Beatle, Hendrix, and Cream recordings will surface....
AS ALWAYS, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!
GO LAKERS !!!
Posted by: Floyd | April 21, 2008 at 09:34 AM
Let me first say that I am a big fan of Kobe. I was the one to suggest to forget the triangle and hire 4 linemen to march in front of Kobe and let Kobe shoot 100 points every game. But, I am disappointed with Kobe's game last night. He did not seem to be looking for his teammates when he had the ball and jacking up bricks after bricks. What was worse was that he was leading with a bad example with an unnecessary technical and incessantly yacking, yacking. There is no need for such behavior. Let your game not your mouth do the talking! Be a gracious winner! That's the sign of confidence! Why cheapened the victory with trash-talks?
Posted by: PJ Doubter | April 21, 2008 at 09:34 AM
everybody's huffing the Gasol, but it was the Odometer that was running hot. Odom played with total fire, stole a bunch of rebounds, poked out balls, was just moving and darting all over the court without the ball, disrupting the Nuggets. and -- most importantly for me -- taking some outside shots again . Every since Phil made the comment about his shooting, he's been shy. Odom is a very good short-range shooter, and those shots are there for him. When he limits himself to driving every time, that will eventually get him overplayed to the basket. Coaches publicly questioning shooters can really mess with the delicate balance (anyone remember Majerle's ghost?)

Have you checked your cosmolabe lately?
You won't believe the results of the charts!
The aspects are measured by the angular distance along the ecliptic in degrees and minutes of celestial longitude between two points, as viewed from the earth, or more specifically, the Staples Center, the Center of the NBA Universe.
Apparent distance of Venus to Mars - 60*
Orb is 24*
The alignment of the 4 planets Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, and Venus can ONLY mean one thing.
Its the Lakers 60th season - Its our year to win it all
Orb 24* - Kobe will be the MVP
4 planets aligned - A 4 game sweep of the Nuggets
"Its the dawning of the age of the Lakers New Dynasty"
Fatty - Resident Astrologer and Soothsayer of the Lakers Blog
PS. The charts also showed the Lakers to win yesterday 128-114, Gasol to score 36, Kobe's shooting would be off, and AI would be ejected. But silly me, I forgot to post that ahead of the game.

Finding the Spaniard in the post was just fantastic, sometimes it becomes a ritual and everyone was dependent on it. LO changes the mood with his ambidextrous layups that was a thing of beauty. That will be the adjustment to be made by the Nuggets, on game 2 they will seal those openings. On the Lakers, the D was still lacking especially on SF Melo got 30 and Kleiza got 23, that's combined 53 pts. Letting Nuggets passed the hundred mark @ 114 to be exact is not a good habit, Lakers will get into problems in stopping them when they go to mile high city. Don't let the Nuggets score more than a 100 pts. Let them thirst and go hungry for offensive production, then they become so frustrated and just surrender. To make this effective, Vlad and Luke have to step up with their D. Our tall men, LO and Pau have to go for the offensive rebounds. Our PG's Farmar and Fish are our first line of D, they have to establish an imaginary maginot line by touching the ball or whatever delaying tactics applied to slow down AI or Smith from attacking the post. Championship is all about defense, a good offense and lacking in defense will not lead to the big dance in June.

Korey,
"I'm tired of hearing Boston's 22-5 record against the west as if that means a whole lot"
Couldn't the Lakers say the same thing pretty much? They're 22-5 with Gasol in the line-up, and most of those games were against the "Western Conference"
I know the Celtics are good, in fact, I say they're the best team out there... but push come to shove, we have KB24 & PJ. If Bynum can come off the bench, look out, we'll have a series on our hands!
Posted by: Tim-4-Show | April 21, 2008 at 09:56 AM
FYI, "monkey shed" refers to the act of "getting the monkey off of one's back."
That does not refer to where Suns and Kings fans go when your monkey is naughty and needs to be spanked. (I'm sure that needed clarification for them, because I guarantee a bunch of them are jealously lurking.)
Posted by: exhelodrvr | April 21, 2008 at 10:00 AM
BK,
Referring to my post on the previous thread, I agree that it was a bad game for Kobe, though with a lot of redeeming qualities. And I think that bloggers ought to know by now what you mean by "bad", i.e., not a bad person, not a bad player, not a bad sport, but a more negative than positive contribution. Again, I don't completely agree with the category chosen in this instance, but it's fair enough. In particular, I don't think enough was said about how Kobe captained the team (I think Derek's bioryhthms were further out of kilter than Kobe's).
What bothers me is that so many bloggers want to use a game with obvious lapses as a metaphysical proof of Kobe's culpability as a leader, player, team member, or his moral standing as a role model, etc. Isn't it odd that this year's MVP (any doubt about the attribution seems to be disappearing) gets more grief on the blog than he does outside of Lakerdom?
Posted by: Tsphere | April 21, 2008 at 10:01 AM
PJ Doubter,
I read your entry as a stance for improving the "theme" of the team.
Do you find Kobe Jacking up shots, due to the comforted feeling he had of how well the offense was running? (Therefore him taking the Kenyon guard personal)
Instead of the OMG, I have Smush-Kwame-Cook and Odom is not a great a second offense-offense, so now I have to always score?
Wordy I know... I'm on coffee.

Kobe needs to be put in the "Worst" catogary. His presence in Sunday's game obviously caused more negative impact than positive impact on this team. Apparently, he tried his best to win his personal glory than he did for this team as a whole.

Korey,
With regards to Boston Celtics....
Yes, they are no. 1 seed throughout the league, look at the team they are competing with, the Hawks who have a record of sub .500 (37-45) while the Lakers as No. 1 seed in the West is against the Nuggets at (50-32). If seeding was based on overall records, then Hawks and Sixers will not even be in the playoffs, Warriors and Portland will be in. I don't know how Boston performed against the Nuggets during the season. Ainge is lucky so with Doc Rivers that they will only face one Western team in the Finals, i.e. if they win the East. Celtics are also good in offense but not a great team when they play on the road against their three possible nemesis: Pistons, Magic and Cavaliers. However, having the home court advantage, they become the early favorites to go all the way to the Finals.
Posted by: Edwin Gueco | April 21, 2008 at 10:09 AM

second of all, i ain't really attacking kobe -- i am one of his diehard fans who always defends him.
that said, i'm just saying -- when the shot is not there and you were successful in penetrating -- don't let the ego stop u from doing what is successful just to prove that you got a jumper -- keep penetrating -- that's what i would do if i could (pun intended)

Jack Nickolson
Man, or whatever you are, You are so jealous! It must really hurt for you to see Kobe and the Lakers doing so well.
You know I was thinking, when C Paul was shut out with no points last week in a very important NOH game, its good for him, they don't vote on just one game, but the whole the season.
Again, I'm so sorry you are hurting so much inside about Kobe and the Lakers doing so well and your team and players are not.
