The waiting is the hardest part

April 29, 2008 |  9:44 am

Kobe_dunks_near_melo Generally speaking, we consider Tom Petty a sage.  But in this case, waiting is actually pretty easy.  A perk, even.  Having polished off the Denver Nuggets in four games after last night's 107-101 win at Pepsi Center, the Lakers can kick back and wait for the conclusion of the Jazz/Rockets series, which continues tonight back in Houston, with the Rockets down 3-1.  In the meantime (which might not be that long, if Utah closes things out) the Lakers can bask in the glow of their first playoff series win in four seasons.  The fork-sticking win didn't come easy, unlike the first three, because Denver finally showed up to play all 48 minutes.  They made LA's 10-point halftime lead disappear, took a lead in the third, and kept things tight in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to overcome a huge fourth quarter for Kobe Bryant, who had 31 points as Carmelo Anthony continued to struggle for Denver.  But it wasn't just Bryant -- Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Vlad Radmanovic, and Luke Walton all played a role in the win and the box score shows once again that the Lakers used some solid ball movement to score points.

If there was a central theme of the series -- beyond Denver's inability to cope with stress -- it was LA's ability to share the ball.  They finished the four games with a 66.2% assist rate.  When the Lakers move the ball that well, they're very difficult to beat. It's that teamwork that separated them from the Nuggets, who undoubtedly have plenty of talent.

The Lakers managed to do what no other team could in the playoffs -- sweep an opponent.  Still, they'll have to improve throughout the postseason if they want to advance, especially since they can't count on seeing a team as undisciplined as Denver -- who will not be missed -- the rest of the way.

The Nuggets have a decision to make about George Karl.  Currently, though, his job is considered safe.

When you look at how the dominoes fell in the Western Conference arms race, it's pretty clear that the best one landed in LA.  Needless to say, Gasol is happy to be on the right end of a sweep.

On Ariza, from the Daily News:

Trevor Ariza is scheduled to undergo another CT scan on his broken right foot in a little less than two weeks, which the Lakers hope will show that there is sufficient healing to allow him to play. He has been sidelined since January.

"He's cleared to do all sorts of activity levels up to dunking the ball," Jackson said. "He can't play contact basketball yet, but he can do all the basketball drills and shoot baskets - all that kind of stuff. We know there's a still another two weeks before he can be cleared to play."

Hornets coach and former Laker Byron Scott was selected the NBA's coach of the year.  Certainly he's a worthy choice.  In other coaching news, Pat Riley is done working the bench in Miami, and Larry Brown will return to the sidelines in Charlotte.

T-Mac's knee is a problem.

Does anyone can tell if JKidd started to loose his mind with this foul on Pargo? I just watch replay several times and it got me thinking if this idiot thinking about his bbal career being over after this trade why does he need to finished someone else's (Pargo) who clearly has a lot productive years ahead?

I've heard, although I don't for sure this is 100% accurate, that if Utah wins tonight, the series kicks off Sunday at Staples. From there, not sure. And again, what I was told may not be correct.

Charles: But, of course! Plenty of room on the Prayer List. Shoulda done it months ago.

And to the person who complained about posts in all caps: CHILL! Whenever my friends/family ask me to pray for them, I type my prayer for them in all caps as a symbol of my REVERENCE TO GOD. I shall do the same here on our Blog.

Nemaia Faletogo, Laker Legacy,

Looks like Jason Kidd has been doing "Plum" Muay Thai training?

WHAT TO MAKE OF THESE PLAYOFFS…

To begin, these playoffs once again display how little most NBA analysts really know or understand about basketball. Play the game all you want on paper, it’s not the same when you actually get on the hard court. That’s why we still have to actually play the games.

The prognosticators across the board predicted that the NBA playoffs would consist of long, fiercely fought, drawn-out series in the West with teams basically beating each other to death while Boston and Detroit, the top seeds in the East, would sweep past their early rounds without any competition until the conference finals.

So much for unanimous predictions. In the ultra-competitive West, the Lakers have swept the Nuggets and the Spurs, Hornets, and Jazz each now hold 3-1 series death holds on the Suns, Mavs, and Rockets. In the East, the Celtics and Pistons, on the other hand, are both mired in unbelievable 2-2 series battles with the Hawks and 76ers, two teams that could not even manage a winning record in the inferior Eastern Conference.

So what do you make of these playoffs? First, there is no question that the Lakers look like the strong early favorite to win it all based on how they were the only team to sweep their first round opponent. Faced with a similar close out opportunity against the Suns, the Spurs suffered a humiliating loss in Phoenix.

Imagine if the Spurs lose tonight at home. They would then be heading back to Phoenix leading only 3-2 with all the momentum for the Suns. We will find out tonight if the Spurs still have a championship heart. If the Suns win tonight, they will actually have a good chance to repeat the Boston Red Sox comeback from down 3-0 to win 4-3.

In the East, it is amazing that the Celtics and Pistons are now tied 2-2 with the Hawks and 76ers, both of whom had the ignominy of making the playoffs in the East despite having losing records for the season. Watching Joe Johnson drive on the Celtics over and over in the fourth quarter for easy layups and watching Pierce choke in the clutch as usual sure don’t strike any fear in my Lakers heart. The Celtics and Pistons are overrated although they should both be able to win the current series eventually.

Where the Lakers had the drive and will to dominate their first round opponent and take care of business, none of their likely opponents for the conference and NBA finals look all that daunting. I still stand by my prediction that the Lakers will take the Jazz in 4 games and now believe that the Lakers can do the same to the Spurs and then the Celtics or Pistons. In other words, I think there is a good chance that the Lakers will go 16-0 in the playoffs and be the first team to go undefeated in the NBA playoffs.

This Lakers team is that good, with 12 players currently playing the best basketball of their careers. The greatest coach in the NBA. The greatest player in the NBA. And now the greatest team in the NBA. Lakers, 2008 Undefeated NBA Champion.

utzworld - THE BANNER HOLDER

Thanks for your reply!!! Lol!

Have a good one!

Jon,

You’re right. Ex brought your point up and I admitted that Vlad is now playing his best as a Laker but not his career best. At any rate, that still leaves 12 other Lakers players who are all playing the best basketball of their careers right now, which is miraculous. No wonder we are playing the best in the league!

I cannot recall any other NBA team ever having so many players peaking at the same time, not to mention that we are the 4th youngest of the 16 playoff teams and many of these players still have great potential to improve even more, especially Drew, Jordan, Sasha, Trevor, and Ronny - our under 25 starting lineup.

I actually challenge anyone on the blog to find another example of a team with 12 players on the roster who were playing at their career peaks at the same time. This Lakers team may eventually become the greatest in the storied history of the Lakers franchise.

And most excitedly of all, we will be the first Lakers fans to have this great blog on which to share the joys and pleasures with all of Lakersville. I just replayed the Making of a Beast and had a vision that Drew would return to face the Spurs as the Lakers sweep San Antonio to go into the NBA Finals against the Celtics undefeated in 12 games.

By the way, the Lakers current 8-game winning streak is the longest in the NBA right now. LOL. Take notice, NBA, Resistance if futile.

RE Coach of the year,MVP and politics...

I totally agree...Garnett with DPY.it all fits.

However my honest feeling is that Phil deserves the coach of the year as much if not more than Kobe deserves the MVP.Maybe the criteria is different and those wins that secured the top seed is enough (and absolutely should be enough) to secure the award for Kobe but not Jackson...but I look at Jackson and I see a guy who has accomplished everything that Scott has and more...the development of youngsters came to fruition...he clearly would have had a lot to do with placating Kobe early on and steadying the team...dealt with the Bynum injury and a major midseason trade...then got the team to peak in time to pull out the tough wide open western conference.

This was a great great job....absolutely no doubt about it.He should have won.

Tim-4-Show,

Sounds like we really had similar experiences, I also got beer spilled on me. Got an apology but the Nuggets fan next to me got a free beer out of the deal while I just had a wet shirt. Whatever, we won the game and all my bets on the Lakers paid for my tickets. Yea, I was sitting about 3 rows behind the Laker fans that kept standing up. I decided to play it cool last night because I was pretty crazy on Sat trash talking with all the Nuggets fans. I won't be in Boulder anymore because I graduate (We'll I actually have to take one summer term so I'll be here for just June but the Utah series should be over) but you and Hugo should make the drive to Utah, something tells me there wont be as many Laker fans in Utah as there is in Denver. Also, I was watching the 4th quarter again and you were on tv a few times, pretty cool.

Totally off topic, but how funny was it that Kendra from The Girls Next Store gave out the ball to start the game? The funny thing is is that she is a Laker fan (I know this because its one of my girlrfiends favorite shows) but she was wearing a Nuggets jersey, oh well, the Nuggets have male cheerleaders, Nuff Said.

GO LAKERS

Andrew Kamenetzky

I didn't get to catch your convo (Espn) on Suspending KG for the shove? What's your opinion? Should he get one game at least?

LakerTom,

"I actually challenge anyone on the blog to find another example of a team with 12 players on the roster who were playing at their career peaks at the same time. "

Intelligent challenge, because there isn't another team out there.

GO LAKERS!

utzworld,

You got it all wrong. To show your reverence to GOD ALMIGHTY and to show your humility, you should type everything in lower case. You may, however type God's title in caps as I have done here.

Remember, pride cometh before destruction! :)

Laker Tom,

re: your thoughts on the playoffs and the analysts, I couldn't have said it better myself, well done.

-bozz-

Greetings Laker Nation that includs Fans it is a great day.
"Wow" the team had their broom with them last night.
It was something to see,but I give props to Denver they gave a better affort in game4 now on to Utah or Houston.

Charles,

Yeah, I think the league has to suspend KG for a game if they want to maintain any level of integrity. They can't possibly claim what Amare and Diaw did last year (running onto the court but not doing anything of consequence) was worse than shoving away an official looking to settle down a skirmish started in part because of KG himself. It wasn't like Garnett was unaware who grabbed him. He could clearly see it was Eddie Rush. If Stern doesn't suspend him, it looks like the league is trying to ensure Boston in the finals. It also looks like Stern is willing to bend his "the rules are not open to interpretation" stance when most profitable for the NBA.

I love Garnett. He's one of my all time favorite players. But he stepped over the line and for the sake of maintaining a face of fairness, he must be disciplined.

AK

If Boston couldn't find a way to stop Johnson from getting 20 points in the 4th Q last night, imagine what a guy like lebron can do against them. This is really the first time this whole season that I feel Boston is beatable after all. Ray Allen was a no-show and Pierce choked a lay-up at the end. Once a choker, always a choker. (i.e. see Mavs Team)

Congrats to B.Scott. Now, its time to give Kobe his trophy.

LakerTom,

I wouldn't say these playoffs prove that prognosticators don't know what they're talking about. I think it proves that these guys are human, and we as fans put too much stock in which guy is picking for or against our respective teams.

Like you said the games aren't played on paper, and it's their jobs to make picks. If there was anyone out there that had Atlanta and Philly winning two games, then more power to them.

Some thoughts regarding COY

This Coach of the year is a total BS. Don’t get me wrong, B Scot done great job. But stop for a second and think, PJ only won once this award, he has 9 rings and only once was a coach of the year, and never with Lakers. Who can judge if working with young and relatively inexperienced roster much more difficult task than let say dealing in the past with the entire Kobe/Shaq feud while guiding team to 3 championships, or this season with all the Kobe TradeMe related issues, working with young guys and actually finishing regular season better than NO? And not even being mentioned as a runner up? I just don’t get it.

justanothermambafan,

Yep, that was me.

Hugo,
Hmmm. Send me an email, but truthfully, I do not think my wife will let me after last night.

LAL Fan,

Outside of "Most Improved Player" (which is absolute crapshoot when it comes to the criteria), I always find COY to be a hard one to predict.

Personally, I would have voted for was Nate McMillan. I have no problem with him not winning and think Scott is a great choice (if not my own). But I was very surprised that after keeping an inexperienced, young, Oden-less team expected to do nothing in the W.C. playoff hunt, McMillan didn't get one first place vote. And while Mo Cheeks got some love, I would have figured Philly's surge might have ranked him higher. Not to take away from the fantastic job Scott did this season, but the Hornets' win uptick was largely due to finally staying healthy.

But again, it's a tough award to predict.

AK

Charles, lol
at least Kidd didn't get all gangsta like Paul Pierce!

how about DJ Mbenga playing and producing in crunch time last night?

All hail Kareem, the greatest big man coach ever! He's got Mbenga giving us some useful minutes in the playoffs! Not possible? POSSIBLE? DONE!

UNBELIEVABLE!

The Lakers are the only team to sweep the 1st round!

The guys are hungry...

This is a "must see" over and over again.

http://www.lakersmedia.com/?p=88

On to the next round! The team should look into tightening their defense so we can squash all comers.

And, by the way, congrats to an ex-Laker, Byron Scott, for winning the Coach of the Year. Phil should be next after he wins his 10th championship ring, before his 11th!

GO LAKERS!!!

Tom - I have to tell you, when I read this entire post of yours I almost had to jump up & cheer out loud!! Great post man! I am so psyched about this team & their future - gotta go get my shades on!

GO LAKERS!

hey AK
On first read, i thought u mentioned Garnett as one of your all time favorite players; But i look back now, and its gone from your post. Poof!! lol

Andrew Kamenetzky,

Thanks for your reply.

To be honest with you; after all the righteousness behind the Amare-Boris suspension last year, I felt Tim Duncan stepping over was also overlooked. Granted, the Suns players were closer to half court. But if Stern is going to enforce a rule, enforce the rule without sand lines.

With ESPN reporting that Jason Kidd will not be suspended for his Flagrant Foul, I believe KG will get a free pass. http://tinyurl.com/6ejrmo

It's funny, when David Stern had it out with Dan Patrick, his main point is that you can never judge a player's intention when coming off the bench. And in order to avoid fights and mis actions on the court, the Bench Rule was fathered.

If Pargo didn't have the quick reaction to cover his face and brace his fall, you can never judge the severity of that potential injury.

The Stern Iron Fist for Justice will be found more of a Melting Mannequins Wrist for Marketing.

Bad Taste in my mouth.

Regards,

Is there a clip out there of KG pushing the ref?

East Coast Jessie,

You have my sincere sympathies having to live among the insipid Celtics---I can only imagine your level of hatred...

My personal deep hatred for the Celtics has been brewing for a little over 42 years....

All of this Celtic hatred, and more improtantly, Laker love, by all of Laker Nation is combining to put the Universe back to it's natural order....

The New Dynasty is rising---and it's Purple and Gold....

GO LAKERS !!!

kene,

It's in there now. I'm not sure what happened. I changed a quick typo I caught after posting and accidentally deleted it.

AK

Does anybody have a link to the altercation that Garnett was involved in?
I'd really like to see that for myself. TIA.

Open Letter to Phunk36

Haven't seen you lately their duded, for someone who has lam blasted and shredded Luke Walton through out this season i find it ironic you have been AWOL. Must be hard on you to see a Laker accomplishing and excelling new heights.

Lakers Legacy

Thanks for the reply bro. Can you train today?

justanothermambafan,

I was thinking the same thing.

AK,

I didn't see the "shove". Was it grevious? How likely do you think it will be that he will be suspended for a game?

GO LAKERS!

I am a fan of Vluke Radmanalton...

I'm afraid you're in quite a large crowd my friend.
Like EastCoastJessie, I live in the heart of Celtic country; although it is not in Boston itself.

Adding to the frustration here, this morning on the local sports talk radio station I listen to, one of the morning DJ's explained away the Celtics troubles by stating their first round matchup with Atlanta was the worst possible matchup Boston could have.

'Atlanta is a tougher team than quite possibly any other team in the playoffs. That includes all the western teams too.'

WHAT A TOOL !!!!
I can think of three or four teams in the west that would likely pound the bejesus out of Atlanta.

The air name of this guy is "Clem".
Makes me think of the old Red Skelton character Clem Kadiddlehopper.

Giant Squid,

I too dig Cool Hand Luke as a better (and new) nickname for Mr. Walton---though NUKE has a nice ring to it as well...

GO LAKERS !!!

Ok Fam... Dolldrum time. Let's see if we are still in unison.

Knock knock?

Re starting the Jazz series -- NBA will not allow one series to get way ahead of the other ones. So regardless of what Utah does tonight, you also have to take into account the other western conference match-ups. If Utah, SA, and NO all win tonight -- it could be Friday night. But even if Utah wins tonight, it will be later, if the others drag on to 6 or 7 games.

Re KG -- suspend his green ass. I hate the Celtics.

Bzar, here thes youtube link for the KG-Zaza round 1 :P

Xodus,

“I wouldn't say these playoffs prove that prognosticators don't know what they're talking about. I think it proves that these guys are human, and we as fans put too much stock in which guy is picking for or against our respective teams.”

Karl, it’s good to see you channel your AK/BK journalistic integrity. I still stand by my statement, even though I concede that it surely does not apply to all prognosticators. My target was obviously the pro-East Boston-centric diluted sports media that can never see past the home team (whether it be the Celtics, Red Sox, of Patriots) to understand that the best NBA basketball is played in the West and the best NBA teams are in the West, as will again be clearly proven before these playoffs are over as it has for 7 the last 9 years.

I think the Celtics are greatly overrated as a team, primarily because none of the key players on the team have a history of being winners. Paul Pierce is a proven loser who never plays well in the clutch. Kevin Garnett has never been a force down low and still prefers to castoff long jumpers rather than to take the ball to the hoop. His resume is of numbers without impact. And Ray Allen has always been a poor man’s Rick Hamilton, whose incessant jealousy of Kobe Bryant is shadowed by being outplayed by Kobe.

I think the Lakers starting lineup of Kobe, Drew, Pau, Lamar, and Fish will dominate the Celtics KG, Pierce, Allen, Perkins, and Rondo. Lakers bench versus Celtics bench? An even bigger mismatch. Big baby is still fat, slow, and barely able to get off the ground. Posey, Scalabrine, Allen, House, Brown, and Cassell are old and past their prime. The Lakers bench of Farmar, Vujacic, Radmanovic, Walton, Ariza, Turiaf, and Mbenga are much superior. If the Celtics survive to the NBA Finals, the Lakers will sweep them.

Guess you can see why I needed to be on the Hate the Celtics Bandwagon. LOL.

Tom

Bzar,

below is a link to a celtics blog where they have a clip to the kevin garnett-referee melee

http://redsarmy.wordpress.com/

I have a random question for you all...its starting to drive me nuts.Rasheed Wallace's name comes up a lot these days.It seems he's in every second article these days on ESPN.He's always talked about as a 'star' and gets a lot of love for his 'talent' and basketball IQ

I havent seen him play all that much but whenever I have he doesn't seem all that effective. For a guy with a high IQ he makes his share of dumb mistakes (leaving Robert Horry in the final seconds of game five in the finals anyone?) and reasonably poor shot selection 42-43% .He is an emotional player but this carries over to his shot selection.

He's averaged a solid but hardly world beating 12 points and 6 boards a game the last couple of seasons.Sure his T's fire up the team etc (hes also hurt them at crucial times)
All in all I cant understand why hes so revered instead of being seen as an underachiever...or even i fhe is seen as an underachiever he's still revered - your thoughts anyone??????????

Mamba,

Please add me to your anti-Celtics list. It would be a travesty to have a "I Hate The Celtics" bandwagon and not include me on it. I still throw things at the TV whenever I see Ainge or McHale, and I still can't watch my DVD of the 1984 Finals without getting extremely angry, even though over 20 years have passed since that tragic series.

I hate the Celtics unlike any team in any other sport; they are the true villains and no self-respecting Lakers fan should ever say anything nice about them. For some, the battle cry of 'Remember The Alamo' or the 'Rebel Yell' would be carried with them long after the wars were over, and 'Stop the Celts' will stay with me until the day I die. Ainge, McHale, Parrish, and Bird are my Bete Noir; never forget the pain of '84.

For those of you who are too young to remember that era, rent or buy the Lakers Dynasty DVDs, and you'll get an idea of why you can never ease up on your Celtics hate.

Robyn,

Thanks for the link.

GO LAKERS!

Who's there?

It's one of those situations where I could see garnett being suspended and the celtics waking up and winning easily.

1. Knock Knock

2. "Who's there?"

3. Tennis

LakerTom,

I always look forward to your posts and your optimism. I do believe that the Lakers are currently talented enough to go 16-0. The pessimism inside me says there is no way that happens. The thing that I am so impressed about this team is that we are playing this sound without Bynum or Ariza. If Bynum and Ariza were surely coming back for this playoffs, I would feel real strong about a sweep throughout the playoffs.
