The waiting is the hardest part
Generally speaking, we consider Tom Petty a sage. But in this case, waiting is actually pretty easy. A perk, even. Having polished off the Denver Nuggets in four games after last night's 107-101 win at Pepsi Center, the Lakers can kick back and wait for the conclusion of the Jazz/Rockets series, which continues tonight back in Houston, with the Rockets down 3-1. In the meantime (which might not be that long, if Utah closes things out) the Lakers can bask in the glow of their first playoff series win in four seasons. The fork-sticking win didn't come easy, unlike the first three, because Denver finally showed up to play all 48 minutes. They made LA's 10-point halftime lead disappear, took a lead in the third, and kept things tight in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to overcome a huge fourth quarter for Kobe Bryant, who had 31 points as Carmelo Anthony continued to struggle for Denver. But it wasn't just Bryant -- Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Vlad Radmanovic, and Luke Walton all played a role in the win and the box score shows once again that the Lakers used some solid ball movement to score points.
If there was a central theme of the series -- beyond Denver's inability to cope with stress -- it was LA's ability to share the ball. They finished the four games with a 66.2% assist rate. When the Lakers move the ball that well, they're very difficult to beat. It's that teamwork that separated them from the Nuggets, who undoubtedly have plenty of talent.
The Lakers managed to do what no other team could in the playoffs -- sweep an opponent. Still, they'll have to improve throughout the postseason if they want to advance, especially since they can't count on seeing a team as undisciplined as Denver -- who will not be missed -- the rest of the way.
The Nuggets have a decision to make about George Karl. Currently, though, his job is considered safe.
When you look at how the dominoes fell in the Western Conference arms race, it's pretty clear that the best one landed in LA. Needless to say, Gasol is happy to be on the right end of a sweep.
On Ariza, from the Daily News:
Trevor Ariza is scheduled to undergo another CT scan on his broken right foot in a little less than two weeks, which the Lakers hope will show that there is sufficient healing to allow him to play. He has been sidelined since January.
"He's cleared to do all sorts of activity levels up to dunking the ball," Jackson said. "He can't play contact basketball yet, but he can do all the basketball drills and shoot baskets - all that kind of stuff. We know there's a still another two weeks before he can be cleared to play."
Hornets coach and former Laker Byron Scott was selected the NBA's coach of the year. Certainly he's a worthy choice. In other coaching news, Pat Riley is done working the bench in Miami, and Larry Brown will return to the sidelines in Charlotte.

I'd say Tom Petty is more of an herb than a sage.
I'd like to see the coaching staff require watching games in this series to prepare themselves for the Razz. Interestingly, Razz amongst all poker games may require more patience than any other form of poker.

Predictions:
If it's Utah- Lakers in 6
If it's Houston- Lakers in 5
Match-up with Utah: The biggest match-up problem will be Deron Williams. Will Fish guard him or will PJ switch Kobe over on him? If Kobe guards him will Kobe get in foul trouble? I don't think Fish has the speed or strength to slow him down much. Maybe Ariza could help here?
Also can Lamar muscle Boozer enough to keep him from going off? These are the two spots of concern to me. I think Gasol will do fine on Okur. AK47 will contribute a lot vs. Radman but usually doesn't explode points-wise. Again maybe Ariza could help; here if he is available.
Hopefully Rony will be back to 100% soon, he's be great against Boozer and maybe Okur too.

Mr. Edwin
Anybody who can show the relationship of the Buss family tenure with the Lakers and compare that concisely with the Rise and Fall of the Roman empire is alright by my book.
As one who has recently been embarrassed by our good friend Mamba24. My advice to you is to enjoy the day and continue to post well.
A week off before the next game!? This will bring Lakers Cabin Fevor to new heights.

Great win last night.
Please, please someone out there who believes in truth, justice and the American way…
…post the Skip Bayless comments today. I do love when he puts his club foot in his mouth. Oh joy. Can’t wait to hear his jive talk now.
We’re gonna get another big helping of satisfaction when we take it to Utah—who a lot of experts picked over the Lakers—in the second round.
So where’s Bynum, by the way? One starts to wonder if he doesn’t now have a bit of trepidation about coming back to a heated playoff battle. One just wonders, that’s all.
Anyone know where to watch last nights game online? I gotta see Kobe’s game closing wonders. 18 points in the final min one and now 13 in the final 6 of this game? Love it.
And we have to give Phil credit for playing Walton all season long despite a gluttonous bounty of bone head plays. That strategy of letting Luke figure it out is paying big, big, huge dividends right now. But did we really expect Luke to vanish these playoffs? I didn’t. Nope. I knew he’d come gun loaded to the show down at high noon. The guy has too many weapons—size, great passing can shoot and can make any number of mid range jumpers or quick moves to the rim. And that defense isn’t too bad either. Where are the Luke-is-doom prognosticators now? Eh?
Great win.
Wes

I think Luke deserves a new nickname.

REPORT FROM THE GAME LAST NIGHT:
First I'll start by saying that I saw Tim-4-Show. didn't meet him but saw him in his seat with a Kobe 4 MVP sign. He looks like a pretty tall dude. But anyways, good to know the bloggers are out there.
Second, what a great game. As always it was a crazy atmosphere when the Lakers come to Pepsi Center. They hate us there and they let us no it. The white out was really funny because the announcer kept having to tell people to put on the white shirts. And he would always say "You're on national tv, get loud" Its pretty funny you have to tell your fans that they should be loud because you're on national tv.
There were plenty of Laker fans at the game just like on Saturday. At the end of the game as everyone was leaving all the Lakers fans were celebrating by chanting MVP and the Nugget fans got pretty mad and there were almost a bunch of fights.
Throughout the whole game the Nuggets fans kept complaining about the officiating. I was in the upper deck so it was hard to tell if fouls were actually committed but it seemed like the refs just called a tight game. In the end all the Nuggets fans walked away saying "darn, gotta give it to Kobe, he's one hell of a player"
All in all it was a good game, it was fun to watch Kobe go off in the 4th and secure the sweep. No I'm just hoping that the Rockets win because I have round 2 game 5 tickets in LA but I don't graduate until May 11th, so the game will hopefully be after that.
GO LAKERS
Posted by: mrbarneydangles | April 29, 2008 at 10:16 AM
we could not have asked for more than to be four and out. no injuries. solid play from Luke, and Rad coming out of his slump for 12 tonight.
favorite playoff moments: Kobe flying past Kenyon like superman, and Kenyon makes a weird attempt to touch the back of Kobe's jersey -- to touch greatness.
Kobe shooting that clunker shot in game 3, way beyond the 3-arc and making a face that sez "yow, that was stupid" and the camera cutting to Jackson who's screaming a "WTF?"
Lamar taking jump shots again, after Phil kinda spooked him out of them. The occasional Odom jump shot that goes down gives him breathing room to drive.
Posted by: LAKES | April 29, 2008 at 10:17 AM
Who is going to argue with me that these Lakers 2008 is better than the Lakers of 2001 that won the title by beating the Sixers 4-1 led by Allen Iverson. Why?
Based of my facts, the 2001 Sixers have less superior talent than those 2008 Nuggets that the Lakers swept. Allen Iverson is the only scorer on that team and their center was Dikembe Mutombo. These 2008 Nuggets have the best shot blocker, top 5 steals leader in Iverson and the top scoring duo in the league and yet, they swept by the Lakers. So, in any case the Lakers of 2008 will be the Champions this year.

HOTTTT OFF THE PRESS REPORTED BY BOSTON GLOBE:
According to the Boston Glode news sources one of the Boston garden employee while cleaning the hardwood floor saw Red Aurebach prancing around in LEPRECHAUNS OUTFIT high up in the nose bleed section. Per the report this employee (name not to be disclosed) almost fainted but once he gathered his wits he noticed that Red the leprechaun had a CIGAR in his tiny fingers and the ODD part was that the CIGAR WAS UNLIT. This could spell disaster and bad omen since the Cigar was unlit.
Golly!!!

I would like to take this time to offer my sincerest apology to the Lakers Blog.
I predicted the Lakers would win the series in two games and it took four.
I can't really speak for Jon K who predicted a 3 game series, but I'm sure he feels similarly.
I will try in the future to predict more responsibly.
In the mean time, Faith has asked me to help her market the "Sweep, sweep, sweep" song she recorded for Lakers Nation.
Its only .99 cents per download and she can really use the money to buy Lakers Playoff tickets.
Here's a sample of the song.

How come Phil is not getting any love like Kobe? All his years as a coach, successful tenure at that and he has won 1 COTY Award. This year 5th place with 4 1st place vote. That is sickineng. Anyway, PJ will just show them and the Lakers Team will show them how it's done again with or without an award. All that matters is the Championship Rings. PJ will have 10 by the end of this season.
GO LAKERS!!!!!!!

Fatty you have reclaimed your throne. I will from
now on accept no substitutes. If it does not say
Fairweather Fatty, throw it back. By the way
can Fatty be nominated for a Fatty Award?

Forgive Guys what is probably an obvious question to some of you-. Is Coby Karl on the team or off. He is in uniform in the 2nd game and
not around for the third- then in Street clothes for the 4th in Denver? I can find no press release on his activation again? If the Lakers win it all and he is NOT activated does he get a ring?

SO great that Denver made it a game. Kobe did what he does but that was a new experience for Luke, Lamar and Pau.
Mamba 24
We're gonna need a bigger bandwagon.

Mamba24 -- Thanks for the wake-up call –
T-4-S: Great to hear about the animals in Denver – At least you can skip the zoo.
MichiganLaker: you are always welcome here. Don’t confuse us with Troll Kind.
It's been quite a wait my brothers and sisters --- er -- not in the Texas Polygamy Ranch sense --- but in the Laker Nation sense.
It's been 4 years of sweat and tears, and that's just me on the couch. But we are here again -- like Kobe said yesterday -- "we are home again." The second round baby. Fear us Utah!
And although I think he is generally a toolbox, you can add Collin Cowheard to the Laker Dynasty BW. He predicted it on his show this morning. It's good to be a Laker fan.
I will enjoy my Shaqapocalypse tonight.
Carry on fanatics.

Botsoy,
I can't argue with you yet. We haven't finished this playoff run.
But I will say this, Larry Brown is a different caliber coach than George Karl. The Philly team had more teamsters than Cornrowers (Bell, McKie - The Young One, Dike, Hill, Lynch, Snow, J Jones)

Great 1st round sweep more of a tune up for the 2nd round. Rest up. Lock and load for the 2nd series.
I think Walton is following Horry's footsteps. Chill during regular season and be the X-factor in the post season. Keep going Luke, may the force be with you!
Go Lakers!!!

Edwin,
Congrats on being today's honoree. The title of "Elder" has implications beyond this blog, as the only other time I can recall its use refers to the Secret Society of the Talamasca, which is featured prominently in many Anne Rice novels.
Posted by: Rick Friedman | April 29, 2008 at 10:44 AM
Old Laker Fan,
Yes, of course Coby gets a ring, even if he's not on the active roster. He was moved back to inactive when Ronnie returned from tonsilitis, but considering everyone in the organization gets a ring, you don't have to worry about the 3 guys in street clothes getting theirs.
J.R. Rider got a ring for riding the pine, Coby Karl will be no different.

PA guy had to remind them to "Please put on the shirts!"??
Perhaps they were confused.
Were they supposed to wear the shirts or put them over there heads in shame?
Fatty - Who is afraid that at the end of this week, with no Lakers games, the bloggers will break out in a fight and beat each other to a pulp.

Possible Luke Walton nicknames:
Cool hand Luke
The Doctor (the biblical Luke was a doctor. Of course, there's Doctor J)
Skywalker doesn't work for obvious reasons.

It was heart warming to see Coby hug his Dad after the game. Did I detect teary eyes of Coach Karl? What a nice story about Coby and his Dad's love for him. Coby will one day be a great asset to the Lakers and he appers to be such a good kid.
Stay healthy Coby and live long!!

I did not expect Mamba24 to repeat the same blasphemy to this tread, I invite also my pal, PsLakersfan to share that honor.
Dr. Fatty, I will remember your advice. I call you now a doctor eversince you came back with the first name of Fairweather, everything turned out well. Your posts are really funny, keep it up.
Vman - my financial advicer from the very beginning, well we came a long way, the blog is way overdue to recognize your dedicated efforts from the inception of this blog. I remember you, C-buck, Ken, Jon K, AZ, EX and many more who are pioneers posting so many times just to keep the blog going.
Rick F. - I know as an elder, we have been identified as old. Ringo Starr is much older than I am and he's still a rocker while in my case, I sit on a rocking chair bloggin' therefore a hybrid of a blogger and an old rocker is a blo-cker. LOL!
Best regards to all of you and thanks again Mamba24.
