Rad(!!!)manovic
When you check out the final tally of a Laker contest, perhaps yesterday's 114-92 win over the Kings, the natural expectations are the lion's share of contributions coming from either Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol or Lamar Odom. And to be clear, the purple and gold's large trio ("big three" is soooo 2007) got what the kids would define as "theirs." But the true difference maker of the night was arguably a sharply focused Vladimir Radmanovic, the Lakers' sharp shootin', often erratic small forward. The artist formerly known as Cat Stevens poured in 21 points on 50% shooting (5-8 from downtown), plus a career-high 14 rebounds to go with three dimes, two steals and nary a ball-handling gaffe. Both Vlad Rad and Phil Jackson felt there were positive effects coming from pregame talk addressing the need to step up with a hamstrung Luke Walton unavailable for action.
Radmanovic continually resists a chance to talk with the squad's sports psychologist, so in this case, the middle man was cut out. Vlad joked that "the Zen Master as shrink" thing creates a "Jack and Adam" vibe between the two, but if the ends are a box score like such, the means are certainly justified.
Andrew Bynum's comeback status: One small step for Drew, one giant leap for Laker Nation kind.
A Cow Town rag extols the virtues of Kobe for MVP.
Don't look now, but the Mavs aren't quite ready to get buried for dead. Along those lines, the same could be said about Deke Motumbo, Juwan Howard and the man they call 'Zo.
Patrick Ewing would like to see another Jackson coaching in the NBA.
David Stern and Myles Brand are expected to announce a proposal that would eliminate "one and done" from America's jargon. It's all part of their master plan that would prevent college players from ever competing at the pro level.

Good Morning Again!!!

Good Morning Mamba24, Good Morning Charles, Good Morning Laker Nation!
Lets get ready for Protland, come out from the tip off focused and Burn the Blazers........can't wait til Game Day!
TIME TO WIN OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember Vlad was one of the main reasons that the Clippers did well a few years ago!!!!

Good morning again Mamba24, Charles & the GREAT Laker Nation!
We love the bandwagon summary - thanks Mamba24! We also need to start the "Lakers WIN OUT" bandwagon - I think there will be a lot of takers! I know I'm on board!
I think we need some "FabFour&Fish" T-shirts too - lol!
WOW! What a week-end! 2 excellent games & stretches of dominance that I know made the other teams (esp in the West) shudder and cause them to hope they don't face us in the first round. That's what I'm talking about - scare them into submission - lol!
There is nothing greater than being a Laker fan. The only problem now is we have to wait until tomorrow for game day...
GO LAKERS!
The BEAN for MVP or NO PEACE!
Posted by: justanothermambafan | April 07, 2008 at 09:34 AM
Hmm. Seeing as how we have the original Jack Nicholson courtside for home games, maybe Phil Jackson can arrange some way to remove the middle man from here on out. Have Jack berate Vlade at all home games so we get more regular production from him... Isn't it time Jack earned those free seats?

This was a great game. I feel for the 2nd team when they were faltering against a Kings bench that had something to prove. That said, getting Kobe and the Knights of Zen wass a good move and it paid off in spades. They calmly got the game back under control and did what they had to do.
Cowtown used to berate us for leaving early but the stands were clearing early in the fourth on their team. I think even a few of the kings players and support staff hit the locker room early as well.
Here we go to the top of the conf. Close out these next four games and head into the playoffs with an 8 game streak on our back sounds like a good deal.

Wow - Its about time we had an EASY win, no???
And Mamba - why a 55 win bandwagon?? Put me on the fifty-EIGHT win bandwagon - we sweep em ALL from here on out!
I hope we do, cause if we don't we'll be headed to a Western finals match with New Orleans having to fight our way through Phoenix and San Antonio first, while they have a much easier path with Golden State/Denver and either can't-win-on-the-road Utah or Yao-less Houston. Then again, I do LOVE the sweet retribution of knocking out the Suns in the first round!
Oh, and to comment on the Luke vs Kwame comparisons - there is NO comparison. Luke is a player of very limited skills with a high basketball IQ who always gives 100% for the team no matter what. Kwame was a player with enormous physical skills who had no ability to keep his head in the game and pouted rather then hanging tough when things didn't go his way. I don't really want either of them on the floor for us, but I'd much rather have Luke in the locker room!

Repost from Saturday:
Sound reasons for optimism.
Watching Bynum and Ariza in the pregame workout tape was very eye opening. They looked good, amazingly so.
Both feel they are ready to go. Just need clearance.
But its PJ's thoughts that make me feel the best.
Ariza gets his CT Scan on Friday. Is expected to be cleared and will need 7-10 days to get in shape. Do the math. That's in time for the first playoff game.
Bynum is traveling with the team. Is now practicing and is expected to play hard in full court scrimmages for the three days leading up to the playoffs. PJ said that's better for AB and the Lakers, rather than inserting him in the last two games. He and the Lakers will benefit more.
Both are expected back completely healthy. Not like one-legged Dirk healthy or if you remember, a 75% Malone healthy in the Detroit finals.
Further optimism.
PJ mentioned 3 weeks ago it would be too hard to integrate a Twin Tower game plan this year. AB would come off the bench and play with the bench mob. Made sense to me.
Now, Phil has Pau practicing as the 4 in workouts and why? So he can prepare him to play as a tandem with Bynum when he's back. Phil has plans.
Summation. This Lakers team will have ALL its players going full steam in the first playoff game. The only wounded will be Fisher and his foot, and Kobe with his pinkie.
Conclusion. The Lakers have been playing wounded, but hanging on to the tune of possibly getting home court advantage throughout the playoffs. Jackson acts like its the Lakers to win, with his we can possibly wrap it up comment, after the Friday NO game. If our leader has a plan and is confident, then I'm confident.
This Lakers team for the last 90 days has looked like a work in progress. An unfinished weapon being tested and built for incredible NBA team destruction.
On April 19, the NBA will find out this Lakers Team is a fully operational and functioning 'Death Star'. Built, not only to win, but to destroy all competition in its path.
And unlike Darth Vaders, Star Wars' Death Star, this one has no weaknesses.
"May the Lakers force be with you."
Its 'Return of the Lakers' baby, the 'Lakers Empire Strikes Back' in '08.

Mamba24 -- please put me on the Unleash the Beast BW.
The entire weekend was gloomy in Laker Land, but the loss by the Suns and the fact that AB is close produced their own radiating warmth.
I can smell the Pacific ....the Suns reign in the division is over -- and not short enough it was.

Hey F. Fatty,
We cannot be an Evil Empire with Mamba24 at helm. We are the good guys claiming back heaven. WE drove away the little devils that spoiled our glory. These are the best times of the year, no doubt about that. Going to the playoffs with full steam, with Bynum and Trevor coming back, with Newble proving he could D, with Pau getting back w/ his normal curve, with Sasha and Vlad providing the 1-2 punch and lastly, with JayJay and his counterpart, JJ coming back to post again. Jon K,
On what you said about Vlad vs. PJ in the last thread, I still do not agree in putting down your player to motivate him while being lax with other players who are not helping the Lakers at all. Vlad may respond during these times and will be pleased for the fans response but he's no dummy, calling him a space cadet, a guy who needs a psychologist. As I said, it sounds funny to "Machos" but beware on the revenge of the nerds. they usually have the last say, because they are holding the ball.
It's better to have peace and mutual respect than coaching and motivating through intrigues. PJ may have 9 rings as Coach but he too, was a mere role player during his time with the Knicks, worst the Vlad!

FROM PALM BEACH, FLORIDA
HI GUYS,
I WAS SO BUSY WITH MY PERSONAL PROBLEMS THAT THE REASON I WAS OFF FOR AWHILE. I AM BACK NOW WITH BIG ENERGY TO FUEL MY TEAM TO WIN THE CHAMPOINSHIP AS I PROMISED IT LAST YEAR.
I DO TELEPATHY (Telepathy (mind-reading): The ability to directly transfer your thoughts into the minds of others and to perceive the thoughts of others, i.e., the ability of perceiving and projecting thought) WITH KOBE SOMETIMES WHEN THE GAME IS VERY CLOSE. FOR INSTANCE, THE GAME WITH DALLAS LAST FRIDAY: I WAS WATCHING THE GAME; 6:18 OF THE SECOND QUARTER, DALLAS WAS UP 12; I TURNED OFF THE TV AND SAID: "KOBE DO WHAT YOU TO DO". I WENT TO BED AND DREAMT ABOUT THE GAME, I HEARD SOMEBODY SAID:" CLOSE GAME, CLOSE GAME"; I WOKE UP SUDDENTLY AT 4:16 FOR THE FOURTH QUARTER WHEN ODON WAS SHOOTING THE FREE TROW. THEN, I DECIDE TO CONCENTRATE MY ENERGY ON KOBE TO MAKE THE JOB DONE. THAT GAME WAS SO IMPORTANT FOR US. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I JUST EXPLAINED A PHENOMENON SPIRITUAL MOMENT HAPPENED WITH ME DURING THAT GAME.
ONE BY ONE, WE WILL GET THERE FOR SURE. RELAX, DON'T WASTE TIME ON BAD VIBE'S COMMENTS. WE WANT TO WIN BIG.
FOR SURE, I WILL COME BACK IN LA TO SUPPORT MY TEAM FOR THE PLAYOFF LIKE I DID IT LAST YEAR FOR THE MIAMI-LAKERS GAME.
BLESSINGS AND LOVE
SHEKOBE

AK/BK,
So I guess we should all accept the fact that Bynum isn't coming back until the playoffs?
Posted by: Xodus | April 07, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Edwin,
points well taken.
I would disagree though.
No players are really alike, and treating every player the same is essentially unrealistic.
Really think Kobe gets treated the same as Luke?
Players are motivated by different tactics and its PJs job to figure that out.
Besides, players know that if your coach is yelling at you thats actually a good thing, because if he left you alone that means he didnt care about you and you are irrelevant.
Vlad knew he was needed. So he responded.
Good thing in my book.

Manong Edwin Gueco,
"I still do not agree in putting down your player to motivate him while being lax with other players who are not helping the Lakers at all."
I see your point, but some people respond differently to discipline. Having taught both youth and adult classes in Eskrima and Muay Thai; I have experienced both "Tough Love" and Patience to be effective for different people. Please take a look at the article towards the bottom as to what Brian Shaw had to say about slapping Vlad upside the head...
http://tinyurl.com/5oes6j
Respectfully
Posted by: Charles | April 07, 2008 at 10:31 AM
Perception is funny... Brian Shaw says about Kobe:
""His all-around game has been tremendous. He's still getting his points, but his rebounds are up, his assists are up, and his defense is really good."
Hmmm.... Kobe's assists this year: 5.4!
Kobe's assists last year: 5.4!!!
He tried to say the right thing, I feel you Brian, but you messed up on assists!
It's more about the pass before the assist that Kobe makes more frequently now.

Hi All:
Great weekend and love the usual banter! Things are good in Lakerland.
Who would help start a petition to push an ESPN telecast of the Hornets/Lakers game this Friday??? I know we have the night before on TNT but come on - doesn't that game deserve some attention outside of LA and New Orleans? It's got to be good for some ratings in other areas??

BTW - Charles - I heard that fan too! After El Captian missed a free throw, he also yelled "you shoot like a girl"! Too funny - notice no posts from SonnyB yet though...! I think if we don't hear something from him soon, we can rightfully call him a troll.....unless he was BBQ'd in error during the game & was consumed by Pig & Toad....then I guess we could cut him some slack!

Neil made a pretty funny point about Vlad's departure from the Clippers being directly correlated with their fall from glory. I guess they had a couple of other small injuries, but clearly the loss of Ranman has left them reeling...

Vman,
>>>As Vlad Rad goes so goes the Lake show?
Damn, I hope not.
Vlad only plays really well about 1 game in 5. If the Lakers
are depending on a Radmanofest every night in order
to win, then they are a first round exit for sure.
As Kobe, Pau, and Lamar go, so goes the Lake show. Good
games by other players like Vlad or Sasha or Fisher or Farmar
are just the difference between a close win and a blowout.

Mamba 24, feel free to put me on the Kobe 4 MVP bandwagon.
Yes, Rad man was as is said in california, radical. And, PJ's inspirational words likely helped Rad's game. But we likely underestimate the value of having Luke's high IQ on the bench. His presence on the bench is an underutilized weapon in cheering our players to their potential.
On another topic, we seriously need to appreciate the lakers Defense. I know we have had games where it seemed to be AWOL. But if you pay attention you will see stretches where we totally shut teams down for long stretches. This happened against Dallas for a while.
When we want to we gan be suffocating. Again, having Luke's IQ on the bench likely also contributes to moments when we finally understand out potential.
GO LAKERS!!!!

Edwin,
"It's better to have peace and mutual respect than coaching and motivating through intrigues. PJ may have 9 rings as Coach but he too, was a mere role player during his time with the Knicks, worst the Vlad!"
Why the comment about Phil being a role player? Generally role players make better coaches than stars, because they have to study the game to have a career. How many great coaches were stars in their playing days? Lenny Wilkens is the only one that comes to mind.
And I would much rather have titles than "peace and mutual respect."
