PROGRAMMING NOTE: Tune in for Purple, Gold, and Blue at 11 am. Our guests will be Jeremy Wagner of the Nuggets blog Pickaxe and Roll, as well as LAT baseball writer Kevin Baxter. Click the show widget on the side of the page, or go to www.nowlive.com.
The Lakers are expecting to see a few heading into this evenings Game 2 (7:30 pm PST, TNT) against the Nuggets of Denver. The biggest would be the decision to go big, which means Linas Kleiza subbing in for Anthony Carter. Theoretically, the taller lineup allows George Karl to continue putting Kenyon Martin on Kobe while not giving up as many mismatches in the paint. Among dudes going batty with the free space in the paint was Lamar Odom, who's basically had his way in most games since Pau Gasol's arrival (and has some T-shirts to help fans... wait for it... gear up for the postseason). There should also be some zone heading the Lakers' way, which could very well lead to more outside shots from a quiet game 1 guy like Derek Fisher. As for the Lakers, they're feeling relaxed and loose heading into this contest, but that shouldn't be confused with complacency. The Lakers are well aware of their coach's 17-0 clip after going up 2-0, which is why they're looking to maintain the current position of their two dozen feet.
FYI. The folks over at firegeorgekarl.com don't like any of you.
Whatever recession could be hitting this fine nation, it's apparently not affecting the pocket books of Laker fans.
More on the space age treadmill.
It's probably not too early to start wondering if Dallas is out, which could very well mirror the fate coming for Avery Johnson.
Bostonians now have some wicked hate for Mike Bibby.
Two interesting tidbits: 1) Charles Oakley wants either Herb Williams or Patrick Ewing to replace Zeke Thomas. 2) Oak's pitching a cooking show???
We're all about Nikita Koloff shout outs on Lakersblog!!!
And finally, we love our readers, but none of y'all can stay on our couches, either.

I'm really touched. Thank you for your very kind words.
Living behind enemy lines and in the hostile territory of Arizona can be very challenging. The LA Times Lakers Blog has become my savior on many occasions.
Where else can you come to talk Lakers 24/7 with friends and have 'good natured' debates? lol
When it comes to information, we are the most informed Fans on the planet, thanks to our hosts and regular contributors.
Since coming to this site, I truly feel that not only my knowledge of the Lakers as grown immensely, but my understanding as well.
I feel this way and often have said it. Being here is like watching a Lakers game at a Pizza joint with your buddies.
Talking smack, having fun, serious debating, while downing a few brewski's, and of course, enjoying your favorite team.
Thanks again guys and to the kambros for hosting 'The Best Damn Lakers Blog Site' on the planet.
Please excuse me, while I go and scrape some 'Orange and Purple' stuff off the grill and bumper of my car. (I don't know how it keeps getting their?)
Its Game Day - Time to lock and load

You're right BD... it's terribly satisfying to know that we're responsible for the following:
1) Getting Pau Gasol from the Grizz for FREE. Highway robbery! Anyone hear of Kwame recently? NOT!
2) Scaring Dallas and Phoenix into the two trades that will end their "reign" (if you can call it that - it's my understanding neither one has a ring ye)
3) Dropping the Hornets and their so-called MVP-CP3 out of the 1st spot in the West with a half-squad.
I think our next endeavor will be dropping the "all-mighty" Celtics off in the finals for a Patriot-like shocker. I don't think Boston can take two in one year. It will be my ultimate satisfaction to see all the bandwagon fans jumping into the Boston "haa bor" after that. I've got a clear view from my office. LOL

well..now that CP3 is eating Kidd alive....some folks are suggesting that CP3 should be the MVP afterall. Now I know MVP is for regular season et all...but consider this...Kidd and his Nets were barely in the playoff picture in the Leastern Conference. And this is a team that has Carter, Jefferson, Kristic and Kidd ofcourse .and still couldnt stay ahead of a team without the services of Agent 0. So yes...CP3 should be having Kidd for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Now the league finally has a few PG's who need to be guarded and not just terrific SG's. So you will see Bruce Bowens and Raja Bells who are geared toward stopping these PG's. Thats when we will see how good Chris Paul really is. Right now...defenses havent been designed for him...he is playing with another all star.....a perfect center..who can catch and dunk (unlike a certain center we know)..and a dead eye 3 point shooter. So he has a lot of good help. So I dont know what the MVP debate is about.

Question of the day for me – Why do I revel so much in the demise of the Suns? Is there anything wrong with me? Am I a sick man?
Posted by: HmrHed | April 23, 2008 at 10:31 AM
You and me both, HmrHed! The things that make me ecstatic are when the Lakers win (natch!) and the Funs lose. I hope the Spurs kick them all the way to oblivion... I hate those arrogant ba$$tards. Since when is a 6th seed better than a 3rd seed???!
"Two of Mike D'Antoni's recent declarations -- he told fans to relax and stated his Suns were 'the better team' -- are beginning to sound like a man grasping for straws.

Game Day Fam,
I'm excited and nervous at the sametime. I hope our boys come out with it from the start tonite. I just want us to get a good lead right off the bat to ease my stress. Going big will help them some, we wont have so many easy shots but we need to D them up for sure. I think if Fish's shot is not falling we need sasha in there to stop AI.
I sure loved seeing the funs get their azzes kicked again last nite. No that does not make us sick to wish demise on them. Including the big whiner. They needed mairon bc nash cant guard me standing still. Raja is only good sometimes now and LB is overrated. I actually feel sorry for the Mavs, I dont have any hate for them, we have owned them.

Man whoever set up this playoff schedule sucks.
Next game is on Sat.???? Hopefully Houston somehow makes it a series to give us more time.
The LO7 shirts by Lamar are pretty dope, I think he'll get a triple double tonight, since Camby won't leave Gasol.

Rick,
“The West is being won in decisive fashion by the Jazz, Spurs and Hornets, all ahead 2-0 in their series. It's important for the Lakers to do the same against the Nuggets, so they're not worn out for Round 2 and beyond.”
We will have to wait and see how these series play out. The Hornets and the Spurs have basically just held serve by winning their home games. The Mavs, for example, are a terrible road team, having gone only 17-24. However, their 34-7 home record is terrific so the chances are good that the Mavs will rebound when they get home. And while the Suns have lost two in San Antonio, both games were close and I would expect Phoenix will rebound at home. Both of these series are more likely to last 6 or 7 games with the result that the teams in this bracket are going to be exhausted by the conference finals.
The Jazz-Rockets series is basically over, with the Jazz winning the opening two games in Houston despite having the worst road playoff record in the West. And like Dallas, the Jazz have a great home record at 37-4. You are right though that the Lakers need to hold serve tonight, preferably with a dominant win. The Nuggets share the worst road record among in the West with the Jazz and Mavs at 17-24. The Lakers also sweep this series just like the Jazz, setting up a great conference semi-finals between two very rested teams who blew through their first round match-ups. While the Jazz have the league’s top home record, the Lakers will sweep them, beating them twice in Utah.
I look for Kobe to attack the rim with fervor tonight, primarily to get points and chances for his teammates but also to demonstrate that Kenyon Martin cannot stop him. Shooting jumpers is what Martin wants Kobe to do; it’s where his length and height gives him an advantage. Beating Martin off the dribble and taking him to the hoop is where Kobe’s quickness will enable him to abuse Martin, who while quick is still a power forward. That is the fallacy in Denver’s defensive strategy. Carl thinks Martin shut Kobe down when what happened was that Kobe just didn’t play well.
Kobe with 40, Pau with 30. Lakers 136-110 tonight.

We clearly aren't the only ones thinking Lakers are going to win big tonight. The spread has gone from 7.5 to 8.5. I personally think the Lakers will win by somewhere around 12 again.

Bynumite,
Odom's play has made a good case for himself. I'm waiting for the playoffs to end before I answer your question though. The Matrix is a pretty impressive player. He's been consistently better than Odom over their respective careers and even over this season. His better ability to defend perimeter players than Lamar could be extremely helpful.
No mental lapses and playing like he has throughout the playoffs you can't take Odom from us without a fight. If Lamar's play degenerates to sub All-Star level then I'd rather pay 16 M for the Matrix than 14 M for Odom.
I honestly think Odom is still smoking weed and he's one of those people whose performance donig so affects badly. I think he hasn't been smoking lately.
I'm not a hater, I just want to be realistic with the guy.
What's your hang up with Lamar anyway? You sound like his agent or lawyer or something.

[This is an old post from a long time ago. Someone told me it was time to repost it] - Fatty
Making a simple comment on the blog the other day, I ended with what I thought was an innocent statement, "God willing, we win tomorrow."
Someone came back to me, "Don't you bring God into this. God is not a Lakers Fan."
Not wanting to bring religion into a sports blog—the unforgivable sin—I pondered my response.
Does God play favorites when it comes to sports teams?
When you think about it, it makes sense doesn't it? I mean, didn't God have a 'Chosen Nation'? Don't religions and nations claim, 'God is on their side'? Then, why not sports teams?
Don't say you have never contemplated the thought. For a fact, I know there are no atheists when your team is losing and the game is on the line.
If your team is down by two, with one second to go, and your guy is shooting free throws, don't you find yourself praying, "Please God, oh please! Don't miss!"?
Anyway, before I could even type my reply, the following post came up for approval. It had no email address. It had no IP. It had no name attached. And yet, inexplicably, I checked, Approve.
I'm now having a Fox News spiritual moment here: "You read, you decide."
________________________________________________________
Regarding your comment.“God is *not* a Lakers fan.”
Although I have been a long time reader of every word of every sports Blog ever written, I have never commented before, so I’m a little nervous. Most of my comments I have saved for ‘the Blog of Blogs,’ the Good Book. Its part of my mysterious ways to not comment publicly on important matters. But thouest comment was so profound, that I felt compelled to respond to thy post and straighten the matter out.
When it comes to sports, it is true, I don’t usually take sides and have favorites. But with the Lakers, I made an exception.
You see, when you carry the burdens of the world on your shoulders, and the burdens are many, trust me, you need some sort of escape to handle all the stress that comes with the job. And for me it’s the NBA. You must admit, there’s some serious ballin’ going on!
The NBA, where ‘Amazing Happens’, is truly Fan-tas-tic!
Although the signs have been subtle, with eyes of faith anyone can clearly see the Lakers have been my favorite team for some time.
‘Doubting Thomas's and Thomasina's, the signs have been in front of thou, all along.'
Do you remember the amazing fourth quarter, seventh-game playoff comeback against the Trailblazers? Pretty special, wasn't it?
Robert Horry's shot to beat the Kings: 'The shot heard around the world, and in Heaven.'
Derek Fisher's last-second .4 game winner against the Spurs. Need I say miracle?
Phil Jackson’s 'Second Coming' to coach again.
Kobe’s inspiring, Samson-like 81 points against Toronto.
Magic’s 'Baby Sky Hook' to beat the Celtics. No pagan leprechaun to help the C’s that day—haha.
Von Wafer's pick in the draft. J/k Lol—Even I have a sense of humor.
Do you think its some sort of coincidence the Lakers wear white on Sunday home games?
And don’t you dare point to the Kwame for Butler trade as an excuse not to believe. I was busy that day, and that Beelzebub of a GM, Mitch Kupchak, acted presumptiously without me.
But like you, I too, share and feel your pain, when the Lakers don’t play as well as they should.
It saddens my heart to see them losing to lousy teams
When Kwame fumbled away a sure lay up—“Catch and Dunk the D*** ball Kwame!”
When Satan’s referees judge a call wrongly against my Lakers—I’ve got a special call for them on Judgement Day!
And regarding the Lakers pick-and-roll defense—don’t get me started. I can move mountains, part the Red Sea, and raise the dead, piece of cake, but Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, even I can’t help these guys roll off a screen.
As my right-hand man, Chick Hearns, always reminds me, “you need to show the patience of Job, Big Guy. It’s a journey, enjoy the ride.”
Remember, “I AM WHAT I AM” and “I AM” a Lakers Fan (Exodus 3:14)
(Sorry about all the “thees, thys, and thous”—old habits are hard to break. )

My favorite comment re: the Lakers-Nuggets came from Doug Moe in the 1987 playoffs: "We've got no shot to beat the Lakers"
In that same interview he said, "Do you think Riley's worried?"
Leave it to Moe to say it the way it is.
I still see it as a Lakers win in 5 games. I'm a little worried about Utah seeing how they won both road games in Houston. I thought they couldn't win on the road!!
I'm loving the Spurs beating the Suns. But they could pose a problem in the playoffs for us especially with a healthy Manu. We need Ariza back soon!

Since Trevor and Bynum aren't actually playing right now wouldn't this be a good time to hit them up on doing a blog session with us? We'd take Coby Karl and Mbenga if we had too. I don't know what it takes to pull that type of stuff off but, its one of the things mentioned at the top of the year when you guys were taking suggestions. There's a lot of love here and I think we die hard LAKER fans would like the players to feel the love first hand.
Again, just a thought....

Bynumite,
Thanks for the Odom link. Garnett Lite! Not a bad way to describe Lamar’s impact on the Lakers. When you talk about the glue that binds the Lakers together, especially in the paint, offensively, defensively, and on the boards, you have to give credit to Lamar. The other day somebody suggested that we now have four untouchable players in Kobe, Drew, Pau, and Lamar. I couldn’t agree more.
Love your blog name, by the way, it would have been a great nickname for Drew, although the Beast has a certain appeal. Come back for the conference finals, Drew. We love you. The next great Lakers center.

I love the post. Good point on Kobe and how we should expect to see him attack the rim against the "D" of K-Mart.
I also gotta love the look ahead to Utah, and the "SWEEP" prediction. Tom, that's the only squad I'm simi- concerned with in the West. They are playing some nice ball at the moment. Not to follow Charles Barkley but on Monday night he said Utah and the Lakers are the top two in the West and the winner of that match-up would make the finals.

SamLL - Hubris has always been this generation of Suns' downfall. This feeling of entitlement, like they don't have to make any adjustments b/c they're always the better team. If they lose, it's b/c of something unfair or extraordinary that happened beyond control. Expecting to win is one thing, and the mark of a great team. But if that expectation is without foundation, it just becomes denial. They have a bloated sense of themselves fueled by media expectations and the numerous meaningless awards they've won, Nash's MVPs, D'Antoni's COY, Barbosa's Sixth Man, Diaw's MIP.

TIME TO PLAY BETTER DEFENSE AGAINST PENETRATION…
The key stat to watch tonight is points-in-the-paint by the Nuggets, who scored an incredible 60 points in the paint against the Lakers on Sunday, actually matching the 60 that the Lakers scored courtesy of one of their best passing displays all season long. That was not a misprint. The Nuggets scored the same number of points in the paint as the Lakers did despite the Lakers posting 33 assists on 46 hoops.
Unless or until Drew gets back, defending penetration is this Lakers team’s greatest weakness and vulnerability. I am sure Phil has worked hard on this since Sunday. Here is how I think the Lakers will adjust to limit points in the paint by the Nuggets:
First, I think we will pack it in a lot more on defense as we try and keep between defenders and the basket. We will give up some outside shooting but in general the Nuggets are not a great outside or 3-point shooting team. They have never made more than 5 3-point shots in any game against the Lakers this year. Look for the Lakers to make 15 3-point shots against the Nuggets zone versus 5 made 3-pointers for Denver.
Second, I think you will see Kobe hit the boards hard to prevent the Nuggets second chance opportunities off of rebounds. Kobe had only 2 boards on Sunday against the Nuggets, well off his normal average. The Lakers and Nuggets have pretty much had a standoff on the boards in the four games they have played. The Lakers need to control the boards tonight to stop points in the paint off offensive rebounds.
Third, I think you will see Pau and Lamar do a better job contesting layups once our perimeter defenders get beaten. Bottom line, however, is that we will need a coordinated team effort to stop Denver’s penetration while still defending outside shooters. Fortunately for the Lakers, Denver is not really a very good team and our offensive execution is like slicing butter with a hot knife. Lakers win easily tonight and hold the Nuggets to under 40 points in the paint while posting another 60.

lakerfaze,
The big advantage the Jazz have is the best home record in the league at 37-4. Of course, the Lakers were one of the four teams to go into Utah and beat the Jazz at home, destroying them 106-95 in the last game of a brutal 4-game road trip without Pau in a clear demnonstration that we have the Jazz’ number – as we always have. Malone & Stockton. Boozer & Williams. It doesn’t matter. Lakers have Jazz’ number.
Only worry in the West is the winner of the other bracket – Spurs, Suns, or Hornets.

Those LO7 t-shirts are $28.50 PLUS 4.99 shipping!!
Cmon Lamar, don't you make enough money as is? If it was really fan appreciation that you want, sell them for $7.00...T-shirts don't cost that much to make, and Lamar will still make money.

Hi Benjamin,
"Odom's play has made a good case for himself.
If Lamar's play degenerates to sub All-Star level then I'd rather pay 16 M for the Matrix than 14 M for Odom."
Fair enough. I've always liked Odom and I think too many people fail to realize he's the perfect teammate for a guy like Kobe who demands the spotlight.
Like LakerTom says, Lamar is the glue that holds the team together on the court. He bridges the gaps and fills in with all the little plays that make the team happen.
I feel there was too much Lamar bashing in the past, some warranted, some not warranted. As much game as the Matrix has, his lack of chemistry would really hurt the Lakers. His demands to be #1 could not co-exist with Kobe Bean and the Conquistador. Lamar's the one wildly talented player who could play next to Kobe and not whine about being the 4th option.
ps. Thanks for the props Tom, you have some excellent detailed posts.
