Ch-ch-changes
PROGRAMMING NOTE: Tune in for Purple, Gold, and Blue at 11 am. Our guests will be Jeremy Wagner of the Nuggets blog Pickaxe and Roll, as well as LAT baseball writer Kevin Baxter. Click the show widget on the side of the page, or go to www.nowlive.com.
The Lakers are expecting to see a few heading into this evenings Game 2 (7:30 pm PST, TNT) against the Nuggets of Denver. The biggest would be the decision to go big, which means Linas Kleiza subbing in for Anthony Carter. Theoretically, the taller lineup allows George Karl to continue putting Kenyon Martin on Kobe while not giving up as many mismatches in the paint. Among dudes going batty with the free space in the paint was Lamar Odom, who's basically had his way in most games since Pau Gasol's arrival (and has some T-shirts to help fans... wait for it... gear up for the postseason). There should also be some zone heading the Lakers' way, which could very well lead to more outside shots from a quiet game 1 guy like Derek Fisher. As for the Lakers, they're feeling relaxed and loose heading into this contest, but that shouldn't be confused with complacency. The Lakers are well aware of their coach's 17-0 clip after going up 2-0, which is why they're looking to maintain the current position of their two dozen feet.
FYI. The folks over at firegeorgekarl.com don't like any of you.
Whatever recession could be hitting this fine nation, it's apparently not affecting the pocket books of Laker fans.
More on the space age treadmill.
It's probably not too early to start wondering if Dallas is out, which could very well mirror the fate coming for Avery Johnson.
Bostonians now have some wicked hate for Mike Bibby.
Two interesting tidbits: 1) Charles Oakley wants either Herb Williams or Patrick Ewing to replace Zeke Thomas. 2) Oak's pitching a cooking show???
We're all about Nikita Koloff shout outs on Lakersblog!!!
And finally, we love our readers, but none of y'all can stay on our couches, either.

Today we honor a Legend – FAIRWEATHER FATTY
*________________________________________________*
There are some people in life that when you think of them you instantly begin to smile.
There are some people in life that get what life is all about and can impart this
knowledge to you in a way that makes you think that you came up with it yourself.
There are some people in life who are wise beyond there years, conversant in Sports,
Philosophy, Relativity, Politics and are even acquainted with the Theory of Everything and
yet manage to remain modest despite these accomplishments. There are some people
that if you were in a Foxhole in Iraq you would love to have by your side. Finally there
are some people that just make you feel good to be around and are really beautiful
human beings. Then there is Fairweather Fatty………. LOL! Yes my friends Fatty
is all of the above people and more. The more is, a great friend who I almost
lost due to my own stupidity. So yes, today I’m being selfish in honoring
Fairweather Fatty. Not that he does not deserve it, he does and then again some.
Fatty is one of those special beings of the Blog we call Elders. Those Legendary
Beings who created this Blog World for us to play in. Once again Thank you
Fatty, Zen, Rdlee, JCool, Jorema, Edwin G., JJ The Original, Ken the Original
WesJoeNixon, CBuck and all the other elders for your efforts. If you are feelin down,
read one of Fatties post and that will be the end of that sh#t. If you want to
know about sports, read one of Fatties post and ESPN will be calling you for
quotes from the information you gain. Several times Fatty has out scooped the
main line media and did he crow about it? Nooooooooooooooo! He remained
the same modest gentleman that we all have come to know and love. Fatty
having you back here on the Blog makes this championship run that much
sweeter and this Blog, indeed the world is a better place for your being. Therefore
today, April 23 is declared FAIRWEATHER FATTY DAY. From this Blog to you,
FATTY THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO and enjoy your day sir.

Game Day, Lakers Nation! The purple and gold continues to reign down across the great state of California and beyond. Today marks the beginning of the end for the Nuggets, a team poised on the brink of predictable implosion.
Kenyon cannot stop a motivated Kobe Bryant.
Kleiza will foul out guarding Lamar.
Fish will let the 3s rain down from the rafters.
Gasol will punish Camby in the middle.
Vlad Rad will have a breakout playoff experience.
The Bench Mob will thoroughly outplay J.R. Smith & Co.
Bynum and Ariza will watch from the bench, anxious.
This is the Lakers Nation. This is our year.

Enver, there's no D in Denver can't stop Showtime. They may get hot and keep it close but they give up too many shots at the rim. Kobe should break down Martin off the dribble and then finish or dish to LO or Pau at the rim or hit shooters for wide open J's. Look for a lot of points tonight. Phoenix has the same problem, Nash can't guard Parker so the Spurs have a layup drill. Ditto for Kidd on CP3. Good bye Suns and Mavs. Too bad we won't be able to personally rub Slaq's nose in it. Nice move Kerr.. best in the west to one and done. Lakers rule!

Game day baby and I'm psyched. Looks like we'll be able to pull this serious out with no problems.

With regards to Mike Bibby's comment...I'm a Bostonian and he's 100% right and I've never been a Bibby fan either.
All the schmucks around here who never even mentioned basketball or the Celtics are putting on those hideous green jerseys and walking around like the know what they're talking about. They're very funny actually. Just try to have a basketball conversation with them and you can see right away that they're the bandwagoneers.

The "firegeorgecarl.com" site shows how miserable it must be to be a Nuggets fan. The city hates their coach, hates their star player - Carmelo, and worst of all, seems to have lost all hope for winning the series. Even when the Lakers were outmatched by the Suns the last couple years, there was always a strong hope of an upset in Lakerland. The Nuggets fans, on the other hand, have already accepted failure. I guess part of it can be attributed to their recent playoff woes, but it must really suck to be a Nuggets fan.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, it is good to be a Laker fan.

Good morning Nation – Good morning Mamba24, Charles and all the blog lifers.
Unfortunately my DVR will be earning its keep tonight, because I will not be able to watch the game live. Yes, but fear not, my DVR is 12-1 this season.
Best quote of the playoff analysts yesterday: "I think the Suns miss Marion’s perimeter defense on Parker or Ginobili." --- "Chuckles" Barkley on TNT.
I though they got the Big Ingrate to compete better with SA – I love this game!
Question of the day for me – Why do I revel so much in the demise of the Suns? Is there anything wrong with me? Am I a sick man?

Last year the MVP was announced on May 16th (but had been leaked on the 12th). I imagine the timing of the announcement will be similar this year. (Of course the MVP may move up the date this year to avoid any possibility that the winner will already be out of the playoffs when they make the announcement as was the case for Nowitzki last year).

Odom's tshirts are pretty cool. Might have to get one of those. He's been playing at a really high level and has been super enjoyable to watch recently. I'm guessing he will have another huge game tonight.
On the the article about laker fans on the firegoergecarl,
Is he serious calling us bandwagon fans? Denver is the home of the bandwagon fan. Like I said before I go to school in Boulder so I see this first hand. I'm sporting my Laker jersey to class today. You think with an enrollment of 30,000 people you would see a few Nugget jerseys walking to class today. ONLY ONE by a girl. It's ridiculous, they have already given up. I haven't seen so many NEW Rockies hats then during a week span last year when they went to the World Series. Also, his whole argument comes off as jealous because we are a better franchise. We might have a lot of trophy wives and or hookers in the stands at Staples but at least WE SELL OUR ARENA OUT. The only time the Nuggets sell out is when the LAKERS come to town.
I'm sorry for the rant, I'm not a fan of Nuggets fans.
GO LAKERS (I got my broom ready)
Posted by: mrbarneydangles | April 23, 2008 at 10:58 AM
While I bask in the sun in LALA land I can't help but be giddy when I think the Suns and Mavs have ruined there franchises for years. They both panicked when the Gasol trade went down, gambled and lost big time. With Kidd afraid to shoot and Shaq unable to guard the pick and roll it has made both teams much weaker. Portland will replace Dallas next year in the Playoffs and Phoenix has 1 more year and than done. The Lakers, geez were about to start another DYNASTY!!!
It's all good in Lakerland! Go Lakers!
BD
Posted by: BD | April 23, 2008 at 10:58 AM
"These teams are a lot closer in talent and ability, and Denver has to realize it can win a game with more patience and smarter offensive execution combined with more mental focus on defense -- the Nuggets outscored L.A. in quarters 1, 2 and 4. But it takes four good quarters to beat a No. 1 seed on the road. I think Denver can do it, although this should be a game that is very tight at the end.
PREDICTION: Nuggets win Game 2"
It looks like David Thorpe is another ESPN crazy that has gone off the deep end.
More focus on defensive execution? That's a joke right? I don't put too much stock in the pts allowed category, but against the Lakers it's gonna be tough when you avg. 106 allowed against a team that averages 108 a game scored. The Nuggets are also 11th in the league in differential and the Lakers were third, and that's where the money is made. His second mistake there is that the Nuggets outscored the Lakers in the first two quarters. The Lakers led by four at the end of the first and two at the end of the half. Hence the Nuggets only outscored the Lakers by 2 in the second, and garbage time in the fourth.
I think it's going to be more of the same in this game. The Nuggets don't have a defensive strategy that can work against a multi-faceted Lakers attack in the half court. Any time the Lakers need to, they can slow the game down and score at will in the offense.
Prediction: Lakers win Game 2 by 20
Posted by: "Pig" Miller | April 23, 2008 at 11:01 AM
Wow, Scouts Inc on ESPN picked the Nuggets to win game 2, there went their credibility.
GO LAKERS

Here's an excellent article giving props to Lamar "The Man" Odom...likens him to "Kevin Garnett Lite"
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/david_dupree/04/22/odom.lakers/index.html?eref=T1
Lamar's been playing excellent basketball and has always been my favorite Laker. Now he's being referred to as "consistent' go figure.
Is there anybody left who'd like to trade Lamar Odom for the Matrix straight up?
WHAT NOW Lamar haters?

http://www.firegeorgekarl.com/2008/04/10-reasons-
why-i-hate-lakers-fans.html
this article is kind of funny. On another note, I dreamt about the Lakers playing the Celtics last night. Apparently, my unconscious mind doesn't think the Lakers will win (something about Ray Allen finding open lanes).
Hopefully I'm wrong, but even if I'm not, I'm not discouraged. This Lakers team is set up to be a solid contender for many years. It's only just getting good.

GAME DAY, can't wait til tipoff. The team is prepared, focused, and ready for battle. Its a must win on our home court if we want take control of this team and the series. I heard a quote from Iverson saying" They did what they are susppose to do, win on their home court, that's all".
Fine by me A.I. If Denver tries to double down on Kobe again an add more pressure on Pau...Tonight's L.O's game to shine.

It has already been leaked hint, hint that Kobe has won the
MVP. Listen to words behind what is said when MVP
talk comes up on sports shows. The vote was not even
close. Why do you think Chris Paul is playing so well.
He's been informed of the results and all the pressure

I'm really touched. Thank you for your very kind words.
Living behind enemy lines and in the hostile territory of Arizona can be very challenging. The LA Times Lakers Blog has become my savior on many occasions.
Where else can you come to talk Lakers 24/7 with friends and have 'good natured' debates? lol
When it comes to information, we are the most informed Fans on the planet, thanks to our hosts and regular contributors.
Since coming to this site, I truly feel that not only my knowledge of the Lakers as grown immensely, but my understanding as well.
I feel this way and often have said it. Being here is like watching a Lakers game at a Pizza joint with your buddies.
Talking smack, having fun, serious debating, while downing a few brewski's, and of course, enjoying your favorite team.
Thanks again guys and to the kambros for hosting 'The Best Damn Lakers Blog Site' on the planet.
Please excuse me, while I go and scrape some 'Orange and Purple' stuff off the grill and bumper of my car. (I don't know how it keeps getting their?)
Its Game Day - Time to lock and load

You're right BD... it's terribly satisfying to know that we're responsible for the following:
1) Getting Pau Gasol from the Grizz for FREE. Highway robbery! Anyone hear of Kwame recently? NOT!
2) Scaring Dallas and Phoenix into the two trades that will end their "reign" (if you can call it that - it's my understanding neither one has a ring ye)
3) Dropping the Hornets and their so-called MVP-CP3 out of the 1st spot in the West with a half-squad.
I think our next endeavor will be dropping the "all-mighty" Celtics off in the finals for a Patriot-like shocker. I don't think Boston can take two in one year. It will be my ultimate satisfaction to see all the bandwagon fans jumping into the Boston "haa bor" after that. I've got a clear view from my office. LOL

well..now that CP3 is eating Kidd alive....some folks are suggesting that CP3 should be the MVP afterall. Now I know MVP is for regular season et all...but consider this...Kidd and his Nets were barely in the playoff picture in the Leastern Conference. And this is a team that has Carter, Jefferson, Kristic and Kidd ofcourse .and still couldnt stay ahead of a team without the services of Agent 0. So yes...CP3 should be having Kidd for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Now the league finally has a few PG's who need to be guarded and not just terrific SG's. So you will see Bruce Bowens and Raja Bells who are geared toward stopping these PG's. Thats when we will see how good Chris Paul really is. Right now...defenses havent been designed for him...he is playing with another all star.....a perfect center..who can catch and dunk (unlike a certain center we know)..and a dead eye 3 point shooter. So he has a lot of good help. So I dont know what the MVP debate is about.

Question of the day for me – Why do I revel so much in the demise of the Suns? Is there anything wrong with me? Am I a sick man?
Posted by: HmrHed | April 23, 2008 at 10:31 AM
You and me both, HmrHed! The things that make me ecstatic are when the Lakers win (natch!) and the Funs lose. I hope the Spurs kick them all the way to oblivion... I hate those arrogant ba$$tards. Since when is a 6th seed better than a 3rd seed???!
"Two of Mike D'Antoni's recent declarations -- he told fans to relax and stated his Suns were 'the better team' -- are beginning to sound like a man grasping for straws.

Game Day Fam,
I'm excited and nervous at the sametime. I hope our boys come out with it from the start tonite. I just want us to get a good lead right off the bat to ease my stress. Going big will help them some, we wont have so many easy shots but we need to D them up for sure. I think if Fish's shot is not falling we need sasha in there to stop AI.
I sure loved seeing the funs get their azzes kicked again last nite. No that does not make us sick to wish demise on them. Including the big whiner. They needed mairon bc nash cant guard me standing still. Raja is only good sometimes now and LB is overrated. I actually feel sorry for the Mavs, I dont have any hate for them, we have owned them.

Man whoever set up this playoff schedule sucks.

The LO7 shirts by Lamar are pretty dope, I think he'll get a triple double tonight, since Camby won't leave Gasol.

Rick,
“The West is being won in decisive fashion by the Jazz, Spurs and Hornets, all ahead 2-0 in their series. It's important for the Lakers to do the same against the Nuggets, so they're not worn out for Round 2 and beyond.”
We will have to wait and see how these series play out. The Hornets and the Spurs have basically just held serve by winning their home games. The Mavs, for example, are a terrible road team, having gone only 17-24. However, their 34-7 home record is terrific so the chances are good that the Mavs will rebound when they get home. And while the Suns have lost two in San Antonio, both games were close and I would expect Phoenix will rebound at home. Both of these series are more likely to last 6 or 7 games with the result that the teams in this bracket are going to be exhausted by the conference finals.
The Jazz-Rockets series is basically over, with the Jazz winning the opening two games in Houston despite having the worst road playoff record in the West. And like Dallas, the Jazz have a great home record at 37-4. You are right though that the Lakers need to hold serve tonight, preferably with a dominant win. The Nuggets share the worst road record among in the West with the Jazz and Mavs at 17-24. The Lakers also sweep this series just like the Jazz, setting up a great conference semi-finals between two very rested teams who blew through their first round match-ups. While the Jazz have the league’s top home record, the Lakers will sweep them, beating them twice in Utah.
I look for Kobe to attack the rim with fervor tonight, primarily to get points and chances for his teammates but also to demonstrate that Kenyon Martin cannot stop him. Shooting jumpers is what Martin wants Kobe to do; it’s where his length and height gives him an advantage. Beating Martin off the dribble and taking him to the hoop is where Kobe’s quickness will enable him to abuse Martin, who while quick is still a power forward. That is the fallacy in Denver’s defensive strategy. Carl thinks Martin shut Kobe down when what happened was that Kobe just didn’t play well.
Kobe with 40, Pau with 30. Lakers 136-110 tonight.

We clearly aren't the only ones thinking Lakers are going to win big tonight. The spread has gone from 7.5 to 8.5. I personally think the Lakers will win by somewhere around 12 again.

Bynumite,
Odom's play has made a good case for himself. I'm waiting for the playoffs to end before I answer your question though. The Matrix is a pretty impressive player. He's been consistently better than Odom over their respective careers and even over this season. His better ability to defend perimeter players than Lamar could be extremely helpful.
No mental lapses and playing like he has throughout the playoffs you can't take Odom from us without a fight. If Lamar's play degenerates to sub All-Star level then I'd rather pay 16 M for the Matrix than 14 M for Odom.
I honestly think Odom is still smoking weed and he's one of those people whose performance donig so affects badly. I think he hasn't been smoking lately.
I'm not a hater, I just want to be realistic with the guy.
What's your hang up with Lamar anyway? You sound like his agent or lawyer or something.

[This is an old post from a long time ago. Someone told me it was time to repost it] - Fatty
Making a simple comment on the blog the other day, I ended with what I thought was an innocent statement, "God willing, we win tomorrow."
Someone came back to me, "Don't you bring God into this. God is not a Lakers Fan."
Not wanting to bring religion into a sports blog—the unforgivable sin—I pondered my response.
Does God play favorites when it comes to sports teams?
When you think about it, it makes sense doesn't it? I mean, didn't God have a 'Chosen Nation'? Don't religions and nations claim, 'God is on their side'? Then, why not sports teams?
Don't say you have never contemplated the thought. For a fact, I know there are no atheists when your team is losing and the game is on the line.
If your team is down by two, with one second to go, and your guy is shooting free throws, don't you find yourself praying, "Please God, oh please! Don't miss!"?
Anyway, before I could even type my reply, the following post came up for approval. It had no email address. It had no IP. It had no name attached. And yet, inexplicably, I checked, Approve.
I'm now having a Fox News spiritual moment here: "You read, you decide."
________________________________________________________
Regarding your comment.“God is *not* a Lakers fan.”
Although I have been a long time reader of every word of every sports Blog ever written, I have never commented before, so I’m a little nervous. Most of my comments I have saved for ‘the Blog of Blogs,’ the Good Book. Its part of my mysterious ways to not comment publicly on important matters. But thouest comment was so profound, that I felt compelled to respond to thy post and straighten the matter out.
When it comes to sports, it is true, I don’t usually take sides and have favorites. But with the Lakers, I made an exception.
You see, when you carry the burdens of the world on your shoulders, and the burdens are many, trust me, you need some sort of escape to handle all the stress that comes with the job. And for me it’s the NBA. You must admit, there’s some serious ballin’ going on!
The NBA, where ‘Amazing Happens’, is truly Fan-tas-tic!
Although the signs have been subtle, with eyes of faith anyone can clearly see the Lakers have been my favorite team for some time.
‘Doubting Thomas's and Thomasina's, the signs have been in front of thou, all along.'
Do you remember the amazing fourth quarter, seventh-game playoff comeback against the Trailblazers? Pretty special, wasn't it?
Robert Horry's shot to beat the Kings: 'The shot heard around the world, and in Heaven.'
Derek Fisher's last-second .4 game winner against the Spurs. Need I say miracle?
Phil Jackson’s 'Second Coming' to coach again.
Kobe’s inspiring, Samson-like 81 points against Toronto.
Magic’s 'Baby Sky Hook' to beat the Celtics. No pagan leprechaun to help the C’s that day—haha.
Von Wafer's pick in the draft. J/k Lol—Even I have a sense of humor.
Do you think its some sort of coincidence the Lakers wear white on Sunday home games?
And don’t you dare point to the Kwame for Butler trade as an excuse not to believe. I was busy that day, and that Beelzebub of a GM, Mitch Kupchak, acted presumptiously without me.
But like you, I too, share and feel your pain, when the Lakers don’t play as well as they should.
It saddens my heart to see them losing to lousy teams
When Kwame fumbled away a sure lay up—“Catch and Dunk the D*** ball Kwame!”
When Satan’s referees judge a call wrongly against my Lakers—I’ve got a special call for them on Judgement Day!
And regarding the Lakers pick-and-roll defense—don’t get me started. I can move mountains, part the Red Sea, and raise the dead, piece of cake, but Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, even I can’t help these guys roll off a screen.
As my right-hand man, Chick Hearns, always reminds me, “you need to show the patience of Job, Big Guy. It’s a journey, enjoy the ride.”
Remember, “I AM WHAT I AM” and “I AM” a Lakers Fan (Exodus 3:14)
(Sorry about all the “thees, thys, and thous”—old habits are hard to break. )

My favorite comment re: the Lakers-Nuggets came from Doug Moe in the 1987 playoffs: "We've got no shot to beat the Lakers"
In that same interview he said, "Do you think Riley's worried?"
Leave it to Moe to say it the way it is.
I still see it as a Lakers win in 5 games. I'm a little worried about Utah seeing how they won both road games in Houston. I thought they couldn't win on the road!!
I'm loving the Spurs beating the Suns. But they could pose a problem in the playoffs for us especially with a healthy Manu. We need Ariza back soon!

Since Trevor and Bynum aren't actually playing right now wouldn't this be a good time to hit them up on doing a blog session with us? We'd take Coby Karl and Mbenga if we had too. I don't know what it takes to pull that type of stuff off but, its one of the things mentioned at the top of the year when you guys were taking suggestions. There's a lot of love here and I think we die hard LAKER fans would like the players to feel the love first hand.
Again, just a thought....

Bynumite,
Thanks for the Odom link. Garnett Lite! Not a bad way to describe Lamar’s impact on the Lakers. When you talk about the glue that binds the Lakers together, especially in the paint, offensively, defensively, and on the boards, you have to give credit to Lamar. The other day somebody suggested that we now have four untouchable players in Kobe, Drew, Pau, and Lamar. I couldn’t agree more.
Love your blog name, by the way, it would have been a great nickname for Drew, although the Beast has a certain appeal. Come back for the conference finals, Drew. We love you. The next great Lakers center.

I love the post. Good point on Kobe and how we should expect to see him attack the rim against the "D" of K-Mart.
I also gotta love the look ahead to Utah, and the "SWEEP" prediction. Tom, that's the only squad I'm simi- concerned with in the West. They are playing some nice ball at the moment. Not to follow Charles Barkley but on Monday night he said Utah and the Lakers are the top two in the West and the winner of that match-up would make the finals.

SamLL - Hubris has always been this generation of Suns' downfall. This feeling of entitlement, like they don't have to make any adjustments b/c they're always the better team. If they lose, it's b/c of something unfair or extraordinary that happened beyond control. Expecting to win is one thing, and the mark of a great team. But if that expectation is without foundation, it just becomes denial. They have a bloated sense of themselves fueled by media expectations and the numerous meaningless awards they've won, Nash's MVPs, D'Antoni's COY, Barbosa's Sixth Man, Diaw's MIP.

TIME TO PLAY BETTER DEFENSE AGAINST PENETRATION…
The key stat to watch tonight is points-in-the-paint by the Nuggets, who scored an incredible 60 points in the paint against the Lakers on Sunday, actually matching the 60 that the Lakers scored courtesy of one of their best passing displays all season long. That was not a misprint. The Nuggets scored the same number of points in the paint as the Lakers did despite the Lakers posting 33 assists on 46 hoops.
Unless or until Drew gets back, defending penetration is this Lakers team’s greatest weakness and vulnerability. I am sure Phil has worked hard on this since Sunday. Here is how I think the Lakers will adjust to limit points in the paint by the Nuggets:
First, I think we will pack it in a lot more on defense as we try and keep between defenders and the basket. We will give up some outside shooting but in general the Nuggets are not a great outside or 3-point shooting team. They have never made more than 5 3-point shots in any game against the Lakers this year. Look for the Lakers to make 15 3-point shots against the Nuggets zone versus 5 made 3-pointers for Denver.
Second, I think you will see Kobe hit the boards hard to prevent the Nuggets second chance opportunities off of rebounds. Kobe had only 2 boards on Sunday against the Nuggets, well off his normal average. The Lakers and Nuggets have pretty much had a standoff on the boards in the four games they have played. The Lakers need to control the boards tonight to stop points in the paint off offensive rebounds.
Third, I think you will see Pau and Lamar do a better job contesting layups once our perimeter defenders get beaten. Bottom line, however, is that we will need a coordinated team effort to stop Denver’s penetration while still defending outside shooters. Fortunately for the Lakers, Denver is not really a very good team and our offensive execution is like slicing butter with a hot knife. Lakers win easily tonight and hold the Nuggets to under 40 points in the paint while posting another 60.

lakerfaze,
The big advantage the Jazz have is the best home record in the league at 37-4. Of course, the Lakers were one of the four teams to go into Utah and beat the Jazz at home, destroying them 106-95 in the last game of a brutal 4-game road trip without Pau in a clear demnonstration that we have the Jazz’ number – as we always have. Malone & Stockton. Boozer & Williams. It doesn’t matter. Lakers have Jazz’ number.
Only worry in the West is the winner of the other bracket – Spurs, Suns, or Hornets.

Hi Benjamin,
"Odom's play has made a good case for himself. I'm waiting for the playoffs to end before I answer your question though. The Matrix is a pretty impressive player. Fair enough. I've always liked Odom and I think too many people fail to realize he's the perfect teammate for a guy like Kobe who demands the spotlight.
Like LakerTom says, Lamar is the glue that holds the team together on the court. He bridges the gaps and fills in with all the little plays that make the team happen.
I feel there was too much Lamar bashing in the past, some warranted, some not warranted. As much game as the Matrix has, his lack of chemistry would really hurt the Lakers. His demands to be #1 could not co-exist with Kobe Bean and the Conquistador. Lamar's the one wildly talented player who could play next to Kobe and not whine about being the 4th option.
ps. Thanks for the props Tom, you have some excellent detailed posts.

"Did anyone actually think that Stern was really going to let us win? Cmon!"
Yea, Stern made Shaq miss free throws, HaHa
Stern made it easy for Ginoblie to tear up your D.
Stern made your offense 1 dimensional.
Its all Sterns fault.
Your team is going to be bad for a while, I would start getting used to it, and stop blaming it on other people.

BD \, hell to the naw on feeling sorry for the big complainer. Fatso is getting just what he deserves. He thinks too high of his skills as well as the suns. How can u think u r so great when u haven;t won a thing. Suns coach is an idiot to diss the spurs so they can hear it.

Most of your posts are short, incoherent and of no consequence. STOP TYPING in all CAPS it is very annoying for us who enjoy blogging..numskull!!

Thanks Lakers Legacy...it takes a lot to be a Laker fan in the East...but there's nothing a true fan won't do for his/her team.
Heck, I'd fly out there just to have a Lakers Blog family reunion. Hanging out and dowing a few cold ones with all my Laker lover while watching a game would be lovely.
We really should plan that for next season...or even this season while the Lakers play the Celtics in the Finals.
Posted by: EastCoastJessie | April 23, 2008 at 01:30 PM
Legacy: don't think it will be massive in points but more efficiency. I am thinking a 20 pts/20 boards night with respectable # of assists. But I think defensively is where he will be huge - especially with Camby and Martin attempting to hog up (no pun Pig) the low post area.
I have to give him credit - he has been awesome this season. I was not liking LO too much going back to when he was traded to LAL - didn't see the fire and he always seemed too lackadaisical. Media kept saying how great he was but I/we never saw it. Now we are. I figured the personal stuff was dragging him down - who wouldn't be affected? But he has really rebounded (in more ways than one) and I am feeling the fire in his interviews now. It's a huge and good step.
Posted by: PsychedLakerGirl | April 23, 2008 at 01:32 PM
Legacy: I also really like the fact that LO is flying under the radar (so to speak). Gasol's big night will force Thugs to adjust to him. KB24 will also have player adjustments. But I don't think they matchup well with LO - his length and ability to move will cause them problems all night and they don't have the manpower to manage all 3.
I disagree with media that our perimeter shooters will be more active (or encouraged) tonight. I thinks its going to continue to be a low-post game/series. And I don't think PJ will let the team fly with 3's because as he has said - that is a really bad habit esp. in playoffs.
Posted by: PsychedLakerGirl | April 23, 2008 at 01:38 PM
his shirts look weird.... LO should design them more like his religous t shirts... and more street and less technology like. that's not his style.

Charles - what do you think of the LO shirts?
Posted by: Lakers Legacy | April 23, 2008 at 01:15 PM

Hope you have a good one bro...

"Love seeing Dallas go down in the first round. I'm sure that 36 year old Jason Kidd is going to put them over the top next year... Ahahahahahaaa!
Also, doesn't Dampier seem like their "Kwame"? Those dudes need a real Center... and a better coach..."
Posted by: TaosHum | April 23, 2008 at 12:56 PM
TAOSHUM,
Since you compared Dampier against Kwame, I would like to make some comments regarding Kwame and our existing big men.
First, Altho' Dampier, based on his stats (6.1 pts, 7.5 rebounds, 0.9 assists) is not what I would call a legitimate center, at least he can do most of the things that are required of a low post player. I cannot say the same about Kwame.
Secondly, I believe my man, Mbenga, can become better than Dampier if given the opportunity. It's too bad that we got him so late in the regular season--with not much PT, he is not comfortable with the triangle offense, so his tendency is to shoot the ball immediately since opponents will leave him open. If we are patient with him, he could become valuable in the future as a back-up center.
Thirdly, I am hoping that we can see Chris Mihm in action in the first round. Hopefully, we could have a blow out game where Chris coulg get some PT. He used to give us 10-10 per game which is still better than Dampier.

Phoenix Man....
We can tolerate trolls, but don't you dare come on this blog and insult Mamba24!! Don't you have enough to do digging out of that 0-2 hole the Spurs have you in?
Lakers have to be careful tonight...they can't afford a letdown. Kenyon Martin is a sneaky, dirty player and I can definitely him commiting some sort of hard foul against Kobe trying to throw the Mamba off his game. Kobe needs to get Martin in early foul trouble and the game will fall into place for the Lakers.
Kobe's recent statements confirm what I've suspected for a while...that he never really wanted to go anywhere. The Lakers are the pinnacle of NBA basketball as an organization. Only Boston can match or exceed the LA legacy. There was nowhere for Kobe to go but down if he forced a trade. LA is his basketball home and where he belongs.
GO LAKERS!!! TCB TONIGHT!!!!

Does everyone remember the game when Kwame was booed by the home crowd?
I just thought about that, and how far this team has truly come.
We all argued and argued about it, but in the end it might have been what drove the Gasol trade. Fan upheaval can really make a difference.
Posted by: "Pig" Miller | April 23, 2008 at 02:18 PM
Robyn,
It’s amazing to think that with Drew and Pau we have two all-star level centers, one of which can also be an all-star level power forward. While I also like Mbenga, like you, the player I still find very promising is Chris Mihm, who will be back next year no matter what since he has a $2.5M player option on his contract.
Chris is still just a shell of his original self physically but I am hoping that he will be our version of a “first round pick” next year since we traded ours to the Grizzlies. It usually takes two years for a player with a serious foot or knee injury to get back to where he was pre-injury. If Chris can recover, he will give us a third quality big man to rotate, who could also play a little power forward. It all depends on Chris getting his hops and game back. Before he was injured, he was having his best year in his career and was one of Kobe’s favorites with a very polished low post game that is perfect for the Lakers. He’s another guy who can pass, catch, shoot, and finish above the rim – when healthy, that is.

Fairweather Fatty,
When I read your name this afternoon on Mamba's roll call. I cried like a baby! This is like Kobe getting his MVP. You are indeed a fairweather friend, in times of hardship you abandoned us at the start of the season because at that time Lakers were stucked Kwame and Cookie. Remember you said that you're inviting bloggers to meet you at Lakers preseason game in Las Vegas, whatever happened there in Vegas would be left in Vegas...maybe a donation, a weeping girlfriend we don't know.. You never wrote back, you moonlighted in other blogs while we're suffering here with KL, Kwame and MT and also the Kobe crisis' where there was civil war in the blog.
As soon as you heard of Pau Gasol joined the Lakers while...Cookie and Kwame are gone as well the fallout of the basketball mind, you came back with gusto! There is now "F" before the name Fatty which truly honest to goodness true. We are very happy that you came back Mr. Faiweather. Your comeback is like reading John Milton's classic, Paradise Lost (losing Fatty)......which we're dealing now the problem of...... Paradise ReGained(Fairweather Fatty coming back) which may mean the lucky charm is here - Lakers NBA Champion in 2008.
Posted by: Edwin Gueco | April 23, 2008 at 02:20 PM
The difference between a championship organization like the Lakers and wannabes like the Mavericks is obvious. Mark Cuban panicked and pulled the trigger on the Jason Kidd deal while Mich and Dr. Buss remained patient until the right deal (Pau) came along. Think the Mavs could use Devin Harris to slow down CP3 a little?

justanothermambafan,
Technically, you won't get "fallout" from an "implosion." But it would still be fun to watch.

Good Afternoon Charles, Jon K., MAMBA24, Toad, and everyone else on the blog!
Congrats to Fairweather Fatty! I hope you enjoy your day!
It's time for us to put the rest of the conference on notice tonight: The road to the finals should be through Los Angeles!
Let's Go Lake Show!

For the Lakers to take it all, they must be CONSISTENT.
Yes, that's the word my Laker friends.
They just have to be consistent in playing well both in offense and defense. They have all the hardware and software and skills to got for the kill but they must be CONSISTENT night in and night out. The Lakers team are soooo Goooood if they have IT but at the same time soooooo Baaaaaaaaaad if they don't have IT.
If they can find a way to overcome this challenge, they'll be in for the BIG JACKPOT.
May be its the coaches' job for them to find a way to be CONSISTENT IN PLAYING GOOOOOOD.
Just my two cents worth.
Have a nice day fellow Lakerfans.

Bronx: you bring up a very good point.
I wonder if KB24 wants to stick around so he can be part of surpassing the hated Celtics in number of world championship banners???
Posted by: PsychedLakerGirl | April 23, 2008 at 02:36 PM
lakers_sth,
Suns are in denial and I agree re their sense of entitlement. Lakers expect to win but still have respect for their opponent. Teams still play 5-on-5 and the moment you underestimate your opponent, you're in danger of losing the game.
Posted by: SamLL | April 23, 2008 at 02:38 PM
Phoenix Man...........or Phoenix Fan.............or whatever alter ego name you want to use today (just pick one and stick with it, huh?):
As bronxlakerfan said, DO NOT DARE TO COME IN HERE AND CRITICIZE MAMBA24. You have no standing to do so, and in your pitiful attempt to do so, you have already awakened the wrath of the Laker Nation. Go back to Planet Orange or whatever hole you crawled from and just dissappear.
You have much more critical things to consider if you are indeed a Phoenix fan than Mamba24............like what kind of lame team are you going to have for the next five years..............or...............how do you find a way to beat the Spurs with no depth and no"D"?
Oh, that's right, Stern won't let you win and the Most Demonstrative Flopper Shaqtus just can't stand all the flopping............yeah, yeah, that's the story!

That's true. "Fan upheaval can really make a difference"
It was Fans in France that caused the Revolution and overturned the government.
It was Fans here that rebelled against King George which lead to the birth of the USA.
And its the fear of Lakers Fans that have caused David Stern to let Kobe have the MVP.
Okay, everyone. Beer and Pizza party tonight, 7:30 PM PST

Dampier does indeed suck but I think Avery Johnson as a coach sucks even more. The two combined are a powerful force in suckiness. Then you toss in a 36 year old PG for next year and they might as well implode that team and start rebuilding around Dirk for 3 years from now or... trade Dirk while he still has max value, which would take HUGE basketballs on Cuban's part... or... what?
Got my Lamar Odom t-shirt com'in. Yeah baby!
