Bring on the Nugricks
What team the Lakers will play when they open the postseason is yet to be determined. But whoever it is- Dallas or Denver, depending on what happens around the Association Wednesday night- the purple and gold will enter the series as the top seed in the Western Conference, thanks to a 124-101 win over a shorthanded Sacramento Kings squad that capped off a wildly successful 57 win regular season. As far as games go, this wasn't exactly Hollywood quality. While the Lakers weren't exactly razor sharp, they opened the game on an 8-0 run and quite literally never lost control, leading from wire to wire. The Lakers played like a team that knew they were better (considering the Kings were short Brad Miller, Kevin Martin, and Ron Ron, who can blame them?), cranking up the pace when necessary to give themselves some space. That was never more true than during the decisive third quarter, in which the Lakers turned a 14 point halftime lead into a 29 point laugher.
Everything went according to the script, and the Lakers were able to complete a very surprising journey to the top of the W.C. I realize Mel Allen is a baseball guy, but whatever. "How about that!"
Click below for the breakdown.
The Good: Once again, we have a situation where the Lakers so thoroughly dominated the course of play, every player gets a gold star, even if he's not on the list. Since we'd like not to be here until 3 am, the list does require a little bit of winnowing.
- Pau Gasol: On a slow shooting night for 24, Gasol was the engine that drove the LA offense. 22 points on 9-11 shooting, overall, and a tempo-setting performance in the first quarter. A four foot bank shot for LA's first points, a 15 footer two trips later, a dunk, three free throws, all by the 5:56 mark. Overall, he went for 11 points in the quarter, 17 in the half. Just as it was with Andrew Bynum, when the Lakers effectively move the ball through Gasol in the post, the spacing improves and the lanes for everyone on the floor improves. Put LA's three headed monster together, and it becomes a very dicey proposition for an opposing coach to throw double teams at Kobe.
- Lamar Odom: Even if he hadn't put up 15/12/3 on 5-5 from the floor and a symmetrical 5-5 from the line, Odom would have landed here simply for the suit he had made for the game. White, with purple sleeves and gold lapels (described in detail by AK in the pregame). This is a man very, very excited to be heading into the playoffs. How excited, on a scale of 1-10? "It's a ten. I mean, look at my outfit! Look at this! You know what I'm saying? I got this made just for today." But obviously, his game is what really matters, and these days it is exceedingly strong. Tuesday's win also provided a great example of how Pau's presence helps liberate Odom. As I mentioned, he took only five shots from the floor. As a number two option, those nights where LO didn't shoot much were killers. Now, he doesn't have to think about it... and it's no coincidence that he's putting up much better numbers offensively.
- Ronny Turiaf: Ronny was able to build on the strong showing Sunday against the Spurs, and will enter the playoffs on a high note (and not just because he threw a very credible ball Monday night while throwing out the first pitch at the Ravine). Tuesday, he was 5-6 from the floor, including a handful of defense-extending jumpers from mid-range. Those shots have become a vital part of his offensive game, and a great way to force his man to step out on him (or make him pay for laying back, of course). Ronny also kicked in with six dimes and a block over 18:26 of very effective run.
- Other Dudes off the Bench: Strong effort from Jordan Farmar, who seems to have perfected the buzzer beating shot, burying a triple to end the first half. Overall, he finished with 13 points on 5-8 from the floor, plus three dimes. Sasha was strong, snagging five boards and notching eight points. Luke Walton's level of play continues to improve. Tonight, he moved the ball well offensively, and showed some activity on the other end. He seems to be finding a better form just in time for the postseason.
- Aggressiveness: The Lakers piled up points at the free throw line, shooting 34 FTs through three quarters. Getting to the line that often can really boost a team's output, and it shows that the Lakers were aggressively moving to the rack, moving without the ball, and attacking. Sacramento piled up fouls very quickly, and once the Lakers had them in the penalty, it was almost impossible for the Kings to claw their way back. Another illustration of the power of the freebie? Kobe was 3-13 from the floor, and finished with 20 points, thanks to a 13-14 performance from the stripe.
- More Fourth Quarter Rest: I know the Lakers will have (assuming they open the playoffs on Sunday, as is customary) four full days off before their next game, but every time they can save minutes and strain on the starters, it's a big deal. The combined PT for Gasol, Kobe, Fish, and LO in the final frame? 0:00. That's about as good as it gets.
- The Third Quarter: As you might have gathered from the previous bullet, it was good. When the Lakers visited Sacto on April 6, they blew open the game with an 83% shooting performance in the third quarter. Tonight wasn't quite as prolific... but really 70.6% is nothing to snot at. They outscored Sacramento 39-24, and transformed a comfortable lead into a blowout. No need to make the final quarter interesting.
- Kobe Bryant: Was it one of his best efforts? No. But after 82 games of MVP caliber ball, we'll do him a solid.
The Bad: Vladdy rebounded from poor first half to finish strong and remove himself from "Bad List" contention. Derek Fisher wasn't really a factor, but didn't hurt anything. As has been my policy all year (and not just because I'm lazy), when the Lakers beat another NBA team, even one as shorthanded as the Kings, by 23 points (29 heading into the fourth) there just isn't much to complain about. I'm not a picker of nits by nature.

WOO HOO!!!
“I told the guys to celebrate, have a good time for two days,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. “We’re back to business Thursday.”
Same goes for you, K Bros (you wish) ! Same for you, Lakers fans!
Vladdy - No snowboarding!
Kobe - Thanks for not picking up that 16th technical foul. You can start whining again. Just kidding, MVP, just kidding.
Pau - Sure beats Memphis, don't it?
Lamar - Practice that set shot, bro. The defense and passing looks great.
Fish - No foot massages
Sasha - don't cut your hair
Jordan - visualize staying in front of the top guards in the playoffs as you do your yoga
Luke - get some R&R and a pep talk from Dad
Mbenga and Ronny - recharge those batteries, the Lakers are gonna need your energy
Drew and Trevor - get well soon!
Chris Mihm and Ira Newble - stay ready ...
LET'S CELEBRATE!

Congrats to the Lakers for the top seed.
Wouldn't it be nice to see the 'bad' category left blank for three games in a row.
For the morning crew:

This poll is only open until April 20, so get voting. Vote early and vote often.
Also, as complex brotha pointed out in my omission of the original link, make sure you add in 'LA Times Laker Blog' if it is not listed. Just use the "OTHER" option in the West sections. (Not voting for anything in any category but what is applicable to this blog will help stack the voting in this blogs favor.)

As one of many who read this blog often, while rarely posting anything, I want to say what an amazing season this has been. The regulars who post here have been a joy to read. Mamba24 gets extra props for his incredible roll calls and obvious, over-the-top enthusiasm.
I have been a Laker fan ever since Jabbar was traded to the team, having been a fan of Lew Alcindor as a kid reading about him in the Weekly Reader. Anyone remember those paper magazines from elementary school?
Nothing may top the decade of the 80's for me, but this team has provided far more joy than the threepeat teams of Shaq and Kobe.
Those teams were fun to watch, but the off court stuff between the Big Baby and Kobe prevented those teams from settling in my heart.
This team and this season have been a wholy unexpected and wonderful pleasure.
The players seem to all get along and enjoy being teammates to each other and the team is filled with genuinely good people, and great stories.
Ronny and his brave heart... L.O ending up with a brilliant season just one year removed from his terrible personal tragedy... Vlad and his occasional trips to outer space... Gasol, seemingly still joyously stunned to be part of this team...and maybe best of all, Kobe finally getting some of the accolades that he has deserved for the last few years. The best player in the game, with the biggest will to win, is just entering the phase of his career that will put him on a par with MJ and Bill Russell as the greatest winners of all time.
I'm rambling, so I'll finish by thanking every one of you for making this season that much more entertaining by reading this blog.
And as far as AK and BK are concerned, there is simply no one better at what they do than the Brothers K.
They have set the standard for all team blogs, and it has been a privilege to have followed along.

What an effect winning has. Simers has become a Kobe fan, even claiming that he should be the permanent MVP of the league. Of course it couldn't be that simple. He has to defend his "big baby" epithet, but without insisting too much.
At the same time he reveals the real problem in his attitude towards Kobe. Simers admits Kobe's incredibly talented and is a factor in the Lakers' success, but he wants the real credit to go to three white men: Buss, Kupchak and Jackson: the king, bishop and rook. Implying nothing other than that Kobe's just a black pawn.
It reminds me of Hillary Clinton claiming that the real pioneer of civil rights was Lyndon Johnson, not Martin Luther King.
How deep is the racism behind this kind of reasoning? The fact that it is certainly unconscious -- unlike straight-up prejudice -- may be a sign that it's very deep indeed.
I wonder what Kareem Abdul would say about this.

I'm sorry everybody but the co-executives of the year are the Grizzlies Chris Wallace and Kevin McHale, not Kupchek.
They personally gave the Lakers the chance to go to the NBA finals for the next 5-7 years in a row. The Timberwolves could have ruled the East with Bynum and Odom for years to come. Thanks, Kev!
Every Laker fan in the country should send them a thank you card when we win the next title.
And by the way, I'll give Kobe the MVP but don't ever let him coach or scout for talent when he retires.

WHAT A GRAND TIME TO BE A LAKERS FAN…
I have personally rooted for and taken pleasure in every one of the nine championships the Lakers have won since their move to Los Angeles. I listened to Chick call every game in the Lakers’ historic 33-game win streak as Wilt helped Jerry finally win the championship. I watched Chick simulcast every game during the Showtime era as Magic orchestrated five more NBA championships at the Fabulous Forum. And I was on board and screaming as Shaq and Kobe’s three-peat raised my championship experience total to nine. And that is why I am always positive and optimistic about my beloved Lakers.
But this year’s team has an opportunity to do something unbelievably special, incredibly unexpected, and oh so deeply satisfying. They have a chance to complete the greatest Cinderella story in Lakers history, emerging from the doom and drama of summer when Kobe demanded to be traded, poised on the cusp of greatness and built not only to win a championship this season but to dominate for the next decade or more. By winning the #1 seed in the Western Conference, the Lakers earned home court advantage through the conference finals as well as the confidence and recognition as the West’s best.
I think that is why I love this Lakers team best of all, the way they have fought threw the injuries and trades and dog-eat-dog heartlessly competitive environment of the Western Conference. It’s all about redemption of the franchise and redemption of Kobe Bryant, who has to be a shoe-in to win his first regular season MVP award. Kobe’s unparalleled work ethic and unquenchable desire to win has spread to every player on this team. Kobe is the heart and engine behind the fabulous success the Lakers have enjoyed this. He has molded this team in his image and forged his will into their will. He is the reason for the great hope and promise of our winning it all this season and launching another dynasty.
While the previous nine Lakers championships I experienced were great, none of those teams were underdogs or long shots or under-appreciated and under-respected like this team, which most pundits wrote off as not making the playoffs after the summer drama. More than any of my previous Lakers’ championship seasons was my GHF mystique more challenged or at risk. I even admitted personally to not placing a bet on the Lakers to win it all for the first time in 20 years. Thankfully, God was not going to allow the Celtics to rise again without also affording the Lakers the same blessed opportunity.
If you need any proof God is a Lakers fan, all you have to do is review the Lakers’ perfect storm of good fortune this year, from Kobe’s MVP leadership, Drew’s emergence as the next great Lakers center, Fish’s falling into our lap, the larcenous trade for Pau, Lamar’s starting to realize his potential, the trade for Ariza, and the great growth in the games of Farmar, Sasha, Vlade, and Ronny. Even Chris is finally back on the court. Throw in how Luke has been playing and it’s as if the Lakers underwent an extreme 1-year make-over. The underachieving team that Kobe allegedly “threw under the bus” now has suddenly morphed into the deepest and most talented team in the NBA in just a single season.
Finally, I have always believe that fans DO IMPACT the outcome of the game. At times, I have sworn that I even have the effect on games that I have Tivo-ed. LOL. At any rate, thanks to the KBros we have this great Lakers Blog, where the love and energy of millions of Lakers fans from around the world is nurtured and friends can support their beloved Lakers and send out the powerful beams of good fortune and holly support that is the real force behind the Lakers redemption and emergence as a championship caliber team. When the Lakers finally win the championship this year, it will be due to Blog Karma.
I recommend that the KBros suggest to the Lakers players that they each appear on the blog by making a short 1-time post thanking the blog for its unwavering loyal support as a way of generating the maximum Blog Karma as the team goes into the playoffs. That is your assignment, if you accept it. LOL. The Blog is the secret power behind the team.

Why were the Hornets wearing Division Champion t-shirts and hats after their win, as if it were the finals or something. Shows the difference in franchises, the lakers just acknoledged it but knew its only a step to the ultimate goal.

Pre-season is over, and we finished it in tremendous style. Now the real season begins. Can you feel it!?!? Including tonight's game, I went to a record (for me) 10 Lakers games this season - 8 at Staples, 1 in Sacramento, 1 in Phoenix - and the Lakers won every one! I'm a good luck charm so.... anybody wanna buy me playoff tickets? ;)
Seriously though, love being there with my Laker brethren at the games and I love reading the passion here on the blog. All in all, I love being a Laker fan! Believe in Lakers: 2008 Champs! IT REALLY CAN HAPPEN THIS YEAR!!
I feel this year is the year so many of the players became true Lakers. Guys we know we can trust and guys who have shown their worth... Sasha, Ronny, and Farmar especially. Plus, we saw Baby Bynum grow into a star. We saw Lamar find his niche as a defensive enforcer and a workhorse on the boards. We saw Pau slide in effortlessly as a #2 option. And of course, we saw the full maturation of one #24. It's been a joy to watch.
Can the young guns keep it together in the postseason? I believe they can. Let's get this done!!
GO LAKERS!!

How The West Was Won...and you did it! Congratulations. We would like to have given you more, but we ran out of players, and we ran out of gas. At least you won't have to suffer through tacos.
Shore up your defense and you should be OK through the west. The Celtics are another animal altogether.
Took my meds (cough, cough, cough, spit) back to bed. Good luck.

Yeah!!! This is my first ever post, and I've been reading this thing all year long. What a wild, awesome season so far. Just wanted to say that we are lucky to have the K Brothers, who really do an incredible job keeping track of the rumors and the drama and breaking down the stats in a readable way, all the while never losing their Lakers passion. Let's keep it up and get 16 more wins!

Is anyone else amused like I am now?
I feel like a number of people gambled (twice) and lost.
If CP3 outplays Kobe next time the NOH and LAL match up (and we think he will), we'll vote CP3 for MVP.
Didn't happen.
Okay, try again. If the Hornets end up with the best record in the superior West (and we think they will), we'll vote CP3 for MVP.
Doh, best record, but not the top seed.
Now it seems some people are trying to backtrack on these clever, disempowering "tie-breakers" and still not give Kobe the MP free (thank you Ali G).
Sucks to be them right now, huh?

GOOD MORNING LAL FRIENDS!!! Hello Mamba, Charles, LakerTom, Rick, LTLF, all the girls et al.
Now the real season starts and we have a #1 seed!! YAHOO! Being a lover of the drama - my vote would be for the Mavs. But either way, I am ready to go today and I would say our team is as well.
I am glad it was a fun, blowout game where they didn't have to work too hard last night. They kind of needed that as long as the bad habits (chucking three's and lane wide open) don't come back.
LET's GO LAKERS!!!

Good Stuff by LakerTom (insightful) and Tsphere (very edgy and powerful thinking), as well as the other true "bloggers". I'm excited about the opportunity, and frightened about the prospect of not reaching the championship without Bynum and Ariza. I'm still looking for "The Baby" to do a "Willis Reed" at some point in the playoffs to drive everyone absolutely NUTS!! I had hoped to have a full squad to really feel confident against the biggest challenges to be faced en route to the title. Instead I just plan to be proud of the guys and laying it on the line with my support, "talking SH**", kicking ass, and taking names!! If we can win this.........EFFING SWEET!!!

mrbarneydangles,
I have some really nice seats for home game #2. I gambled on those, but can get the first home game if wanted/needed.
Spoke to Hugo last night, I think he'll see how things develop tonight.
I personally think it will be the Nuggs, only because I've been waiting for it all year & the Hornets (from what I can tell) have little to play for tonight (other than maybe momentum against the team they might play in the playoffs... I think the Hornets stand a better chance against the Mavs than they do against the Nuggs.
The Nuggets don't have a thin front line which is where the Hornets excel.
I guess what I'm saying is, I expect to meet one of the K-Bros in person very soon!

I apologize PSLakerfan if my response came off as if I were "attacking" you. I most certainly was not. I've rarely if ever, used our blog to engage in personal attacks regardless if I disagree or not. It just isnt my thang. The " Crackhead" comment was part of an analogy I was using and was totally directed at Bush & McCain. Basically using the metaphor of glass pipe vs soda can. I'm a HUGE fan of MSNBC (mainly due to Tamron Hall and Nora O'Donnell, my fantasy 3some) and because I also had the opportunity to see his interview and his stance on issues important to Us as Americans and once he went into "I'm PRO LIFE" blah blah blah, he lost me.
Granted, I'm not "Anti Life" but I truly believe in my heart of hearts, if Men could give Birth, we wouldnt be having these discussions. My biggest problem with your canidates position is..Who are you to tell a female she HAS to give birth? Its complicated I admit, but in light of whats gone on this week in Texas and the subsequent reports that a 16 yr old ALREADY has 4 kids!!!!! Its just wrong and sickening in my estimation. I've actually been doing my homework since last Oct with regards to the Canidates and I have more ammo that rubs me wrong about McBush but.. This is about the Lakers so I'll chill so A&BK dont kick me out of the Family lol
But in all sincereity PS, I never meant that post to insult or attack you and I'm Sorry if it came off that way. I'm guilty of using an analogy that may not have applied, but its the first thing that came to mind when talking about those 2 lol and NO.. I wouldnt put a Clinton back in the office, Im leaning towards Obama or Nader FYI

"b) Why is it that no one ever admits to voting for a Republican, but they seem to get roughly half of the vote each election???????????
c) research his policies?????? So far he is the only one with policies............
I purposely ommitted A & D PS lol
B) In my view, most of the country votes Republican because they have the most effective "scare" tactics. They succeed at making the general public believe if a Dem got in office, it becomes a Tax and Spend administration. I'd have to guess the reason present day republicans are " in the closet" look around !!!! The GOP, specfically Bush& Cheney, has ran the entire country into the dirt for 7 years and counting. Remember all those Mini Vans and SUV's with the BIG OLE "W" in the rear window? Dont see too many anymore.
C) No McCain doesnt actually have policies, he's piggy backing off Bush and adding his own wrinkles i.e continue to engage in a sham war, prevent women from having the right to choose. I strongly disagree if you're saying he HAS policies. We, this great country, simply can not afford to stay the course. Did you already forget what his comments were about the Mortage crisis? I just dont want a leader pushing HIS personal beliefs onto me disguised as "policies" nor do I want a War Monger in office. We've lost over 4,000 Men and Women for what? Please, if you're truly a Republican and you believe in the party, explain to me how on earth we managed to make a Cesspool of misery? I'll help, since Bush has been in office Oil companies and Halliburton have enjoyed their largest profit margins in history thusfar, mere coincedence? I think not. Truth is, Bush and Cheney are selfish evil Men and History will not be very kind to them when its all said and done.
On a Lighter note... Man I HATE Skip Bayless!!!! That Moron just had the nerve to say the Spurs lost to the Lake Show because Manu didnt play!!!!!!! lol Not once did anyone mention the Lakers were'nt at full strength either.. Let the Hate begin!!!!

Just wanted to say congrats to the Lakers on a great and hard-fought season! I predicted about 55 wins (like Dr. Buss) and they exceeded our expectations. Good job fellas.....Lets kick some rear in the playoffs, the table is set for us to go out and destroy with home court advantage.
GO LA!
KOBE MVP

Jumping on the bandwagon... Simers of all people. Tomorrow it will be something biting and negative but today we get a breath of fresh air out of him. You have to read the whole thing (which I forced myself to do) but here is the only thing worth truly noting.....
"And so when Bryant is named MVP, as he should be this season and every season, it would be nice if he thanked the Lakers brass for hanging in there with him when he was stomping his feet and looking to move to Chicago."
I love KB24's game, spirit, heart and passion for winning - absolutely unbeatable. But KB24 does need to do the right thing when he gets his MVP trophy and publicly make amends to his team, his boss and his fans. Sometimes when you feel you are better than anyone else, you need to show some humility when it truly counts. Doing this will go a long way with everyone and make winners out of all of us.
LET's GO LAKERS!!

Good Morning Lakers Fans.
Yohoooooo!!! We're officially no. 1 in the West!!!
More hardwork to be done--Kobe
By the way LA fans, is Chris Mihm and Spencer Hawes twins?????? they look the same.

complex,
I vote Republican becuase they consistently have the best policies. It's nto a sham war. If you wnat to debate that, then make some actual points about it, don't jut call it "sham."
And while you are at it, please point out where Pres Bush has done anything to affect a woman's "right to choose."

Verily I say unto thee it would be easier for an elephant to
fit through the eye of a needle than for me to associate in any way with the FUNS. I would rather
face the very gates of hell themselves than to ever desert my beloved Lakers. But since you sir
Suns Fan have as much as admitted you are a demon I suggest you go back to your home.
IN OTHER WORDS GO TO H3LL. LOL! See that didn't take 6 minutes which is about how long your team
will last in the playoffs.

I don't know if you all want the Nuggets as much as you protest. They can be formidable, and they will have two of the best 3 players on the floor. Obviously, the Lakers should win, but Nuggets are no sleeper... but then again, what team in the Western Conference is...?
