All's well in So Cal

April 4, 2008 |  8:59 am

The Laker Nation's world waited with bated anticipation yesterday afternoon, fearing the ugliest of shoes dropping with news that Pau Gasol's ankle suffered negative effects from playing Wednesday night.   That the swelling was through the roof.  That the ankle would require amputation and a transplant.  But fear not, purple and gold bleeders.  Gasol went through Thursday's practice like a dude ready to rock and roll and will be available for action during tonight's brouhaha against the Mavs (7:30 pm PST, ESPN).  Also with plans to suit up?  One Dirk Nowitzki, who made a rather speedy recovery from ankle (and knee) problems of his own.   This could be a problem for the Lakers.  Dallas' problems, however, have been more about Jason Kidd, to a large degree.  He isn't playing badly, but his presence hasn't exactly translated to a run of wins.  Certainly not in the fashion felt by the Lakers' upon Pau's arrival.  Win or lose tonight, stat guru John Hollinger figures the Lakers to finish as a three seed, but doesn't rule out a higher outcome.  But can they go all the way?  That's heavily dependent on the successful reintegration of Gasol and Andrew Bynum into the mix.

Kobe came in a scant ten technicals too high to be the Pacific's nominee.

K-Mart suspended a game for rough play?  No, you get out of town, because it's true (and could possibly affect the Western Conference race).

Shaq's been playing the victim. The Miami Herald ain't buying it.

Paging Dr. Kavulic! Yao Ming, paging Dr. Kavulic!

What does Donnie Walsh's presence mean to the Knicks?  Well, if you ask either SI or ESPN or Yahoo!, that Zeke Thomas will be at the Garden next season only as a paid ticket holder.  Unless, of course, you ask ESPN again.

While the Blazers' desire to lose Darius Miles from the team and the payroll is understandable, isn't it a touch ghoulish for Kevin Pritchard to be publicly "optimistic" his knee injury will be ruled career-ending?  They're called "closed doors," dude.

Rest easy, friend, you're in the best of company!

Arrgghhhh! I just can't help myself, so I'll make this brief.

Fire 1 posted:
"Kobe will never win another championship. Although he is the best right now, possibly ever, I just don't see him winning another one. In time when this Gasol experiment doesn't work out, he will then ask for another trade or opt-out."

This is why I, and others, call people trolls, and try very hard not to respond to them. If this is a place for conversation, and exchange of ideas regarding basketball, then you have to do better than just claiming things like this and not talking about basketball. Tell us WHY you think this is the case? Why would Kobe choose to leave this team now that he has an All-Star PF and an up and coming center to play with? As well as a bench that supports the team well when healthy? What Gasol experiment? If it's an experiment, then every team in the NBA would like to duplicate its success, considering the Lakers record with Pau Gasol in the lineup. You're being ignorant!! Give us something to talk about man! In this place, you are judged by what you type. What you are saying. In this case, you give no one any substance or anything to discuss. You post very inflammatory speech that isn't meant for anything other than picking fights. SO I SAY GET LOST!!!!!!!!!!!

Toad,

Every True Fan/Real Blogger has a duty to publicly wound a particular Troll, but once you've wounded that individual Troll, you have an even bigger duty TO NEVER TALK TO NOR ACKNOWLEDGE THAT TROLL AGAIN. It's as if they've been obliterated from the blogosphere.

Trolls mainly want attention. You give them a little viscious negative attention and then no more for eternity.

The only cure for Trollitis.

Fire and Fire,

Save your trash talking fior when we play each other. We've already beaten you three times this season and own the tie-breaker if our final records are the same.

That being said, wouldn't a Lakers/Suns WCF be epic? I'm glad I'm not a betting man, 'cause that would be a tough series, and really could go either way.

I'll still be pulling for the Lake Show, of course.

Right there with ya Jon!

This is big news:

"San Antonio could push the Hornets down to No. 2, and the other team to watch is the Lakers. They still play the Hornets and will own the tiebreaker with a win."

Even with a win the Hornets are still a half game ahead of us so we need them to loose to Utah or GS.

Wes

I tried to buy tickets today but they sold out within 2 minutes? Grrr, I'm really thinking about trying to become a season ticket holder but the waiting list is TWO to Three years long, as a nifty side point did you guys know that Heat tickets are actually selling for only 3.oo bucks? True story.

Hey Suns Fans. No disrespect to you, we really like discussing Laker-related ball here. You are our best Pac Division rival though, but there is no special rivalry or hatred for just the Suns. I'm pretty sure we'd get the same flack from GSW fans if the Warriors we're in your spot.

But if we must discuss it in reference to the Suns, here ya go:

The present: The Lakers are first in the Pacific. We are a full game ahead of the Suns. That's the plainest and simplest way of saying "we're better". No caveats, no excuses, nothing. The way I like to do it when I'm on the court is to simply say "SCOREBOARD".

To be real, we don't think its a big accomplishment, but its a good step for a team that's been 7th or 8th in the past 3 years. And yes, I know, playoffs are where things really get decided, but if a Laker fan declares the Lakers are gonna win it on a Laker focused message board, cut em some slack eh?

14 championships- is it the past?: Yes, but its indicative of the decades of excellence we had. I grew up believing that the Lakers can only win (the 80's spoiled me). We've won a championship in the last 4 of 7 decades. We are due, and given our personnel, its bound to happen soon.

The Suns past has been actually pretty good, for teams other than the Lakers, Celtics, or 2nd tier teams like the Spurs or Pistons. The past 3 years have been good for you guys, and I don't think anyone has taken that away from you here. Our lakers put up 1 valiant effort 2 years ago, but that's the past.

The future: Kobe, Lamar, and Gasol are entering their prime. A fully matured Kobe and Lamar are alot more dangerous than anyone likes to give him credit for. The lakers strategy has always been dominant veterans in their peak, with youthful, athletic players chomping at the bit (the veteran filled Shaq teams were actually an anomaly). Sasha, Farmar, Bynum, and Ronny are especially good youthful players. They are often able to sustain or extend leads when needed, and those guys are all under 22. This team is built for an extended run of contention.

In reference to the Suns future, I don't see how Stat is going to do it by himself in the future. They traded a peaking player (Marion) for a declining and highly compensated Shaq. I honestly would have kept Marion, kept Joe Johnson, and K thomas. That's a big lineup that plays Suns basketball, not the abbreviated version of the Triangle they play now. Shaq is showing flashes of brilliance, but he's no Kareem, who is well known for practicing maintenance of his body.

Fire32 has seen that we can have a civil discussion, and I do admire the guys from other teams that can have a civil discussion between the battles. Let's not let it devolve into what other boards get alot of....no trolling or name calling.

LAKER TRUTH

I don't see how Phoenix can be considered a tough match-up for the Lakers. LA beat Phoenix 3 out of 4 and the one game they lost neither Bynum nor Radmanovich played.

Fire1, I am holding up a finger indicating which number you are. Come to think of it, I guess I am firing one.

Mark

Fire1,

I think you are gravely mistaken. The Pau trade was no experiment, have you forgotten how much it freaked out other teams? The Mavs and the Suns made huge trades simply because it scared the hell out of them to see the Lakers getting another big man, had the Laker not gotten Pau do you think the Suns would have gotten Shaq or the Mavs Kidd? I don’t think so. The second the Lakers pulled this trade everyone and their grandmother jumped and tried to better adjust their teams to be able to contend with the Lakers, they know just how dangerous this team will be and all they can do is hope that Shaq and Kidd are worth the money, because if not they just got screwed and we are on our way to another banner

New Orleans and Phoenix have walkovers tonight while Utah plays San Antonio. So, if the Lakers lose there are no less than 4 teams (including Dallas) that will gain on them with only 7 more games to play. And CP3 will be pulling away from Kobe in the MVP voting. So, if there were ever a must-win game for KB and the Lakers, it's tonight.

Rub up Bynum's knee with your blue goo, wrap it up and get him in there.

so guys what is a troll? why do you guys call suns fans trolls?

I think I speak for all true Laker fans when I say to Fire32 and Fire1 "I truly, truly, hope to see you in the Playoffs. If we win a championship without the pleasure of kicking your a$$es I will be very disappointed".

PS. I too am skeptical of the true identity of Fire1, but I will assume he really is a typical fairweather Funs fan.

I don't like how a few losses to bad teams (during which Kobe had monster games by any standard) drop Kobe in the MVP rankings. It seems almost childish.

I think we all know how Kobe feels on the matter:

36.13.7 - Translation: 36=M; 13=V; 7=P

Give the man what he deserves.

okay guys I apologize for being such a jerk. now let's just talk bball.

you guys do have to admit, playing our team, the SUNS is always fun to watch. I just think that the LAKERS, although rich with tradition, will not win one a championship with kobe. Maybe when BYnum becomes your franchise, but when you have a leader like kobe, who always seems to get booted out of games when his team is getting blown out(i think he is doing it on purpose rather than getting booed for walking out on his team) it is not a good sign. he will quit on you.

Nice, you aint lying.
BTW Sonny, I cant hold it much longer, I'm still holding my..

FIRE1,

I'm even don't know why I'm arguing with you for several reason....

1. When Suns will be trashed, you'll never bother to show up here and admit you were wrong like so many trolls did it in the past.

2. Shaq is not MDE, he is more like SMDE - Shell od Most dominant Ever, Most dominant future center will be playing in Lakers uniform for many years to come, when Lakers extend Andrew Bynum. Never heard about him? Too bad...

3. Your team mortgaged their future, it's basicaly now or rebuild and you can guess where you guys going without picks and 2 years of Shaq's 20M per year contract? Right to the bottom of the Western Conference.

Wow,

3 fires. DrewPauKobe, I hope you see my point. There are way too many multiple posters...

Mamba,
Put me on all the lists, just for the fun of seeing the title I earn. I can then justifiably put it on my resume, citing the authority of the Lakers Blog, the most thirst-quenching oasis in the national press.

But seriously Mamba you're giving yourself too much of a work load. To make sure people are really committed to being on a list, refuse to add their name if they don't invent their own title. Then as head Honcho change it if you think it's appropriate, just like Phil when he yanks players after a turnover or two and a bricked trey.

Here's my next title to be put on any of the lists: "superdelegate" (Most Dominant Ever, capable of nominating a President in a single bound) .

GAME DAY!!!!!!

every game is important with seeding, screw hollinger and the 3rd seed, we're going to beat dallas, spurs, and hornets to regain the #1.

--FearlessWhackJob

So I'm watching the Final 4 press conferece of Bill Self was asked about some of his best teams he's coached and he talked about Brian Cook.

Do you guys remember Brian Cook in college? Well for those of you who didn't know of him back then, the dude was the Big 10 Conference player of the year. He averaged 20 points and something like 8 rebounds a game. He was a scoring machine.

What was best about Cook was how he scored. He took it inside and outside. In fact, he was a tremendous post player. He had a midrange, but he had a little hook shot to the basket. And in transition he was a nightmare to defend. As NBAdraft.net says in a scouting report...

"He routinely beats his defender down the court" to get easy baskets.

When they drafted Cook I was happy they got somebody who could score in the post. A back up scoring PF. But something happened. The Lakers staff turned him into a 3 point shooter. So much, that he lost all post game, which made him great in college.

Personally, I'm not sure how the Lakers development is with young players. Jordan needs to be played to his strengths which is getting to the basket, not jacking up 3s. Sasha and Radman are 3 point shooters, but not Farmar. Finally, Turiaf is being played the way he should, but hes more post, than a midrange shooter.

I KNOW, I KNOW, STARVE THE TROLL,

But I can't help myself. Fire1 says the Suns now have the MDE on their team, and that is the reason why they will win a ring. ?????? Gretzky, Muhammad Ali, Sandy Koufax, etc.. are all MDE's in their respective sports... So, which one would you want in your corner today. They are all way past their primes, but I guess if you were once the Most Dominant Ever, then you must be an asset at any advanced age.....

By the way Wilt was by far the NBA's MDE.....

LAL_FAN
You do have a point about us mortgaging our future with that post. No drafts picks, don't forget, Nash and Shaq with be off our hooks in the summer of 2010. and who are free agents during that summer? just to mention a couple. JAMES AND WADE. now you can pair amare up with one of them, and we have a 1-2 punch to go with our SHOWTIME SUNS

Unfortunately I'm not a very good nurse.

Posted by: Faith | April 04, 2008 at 11:08 AM

Faith,

I once had a nurse put an IV in my arm wrong and then disappear for 45 min while this cold, dry needle just sat there causing me severe psychological distress ( I was sure it was actually pumping oxygen into my bloodstream and my heart would at any moment explode).

A different nurse came in, changed the needle and relieved the pain.

If you're anything like the second nurse, you're a great nurse.

"Traditional Chinese medicine can range from acupuncture to herbal teas, and is usually less invasive and slower acting than Western medicine."

"....slower acting?"

Maybe the Lakers have been using Chinese traditional treatments all along and is the reason we are so slow to heal?

Wow another member to the hot air squad........

pslakerfan,

I think we will see eachother in the playoffs and it will be good. You know what a SUNS/lakers series reminds me of, a good ole Rocky movie. All offense- body blows and power punches with no defense- pretty much put your face out there with your gloves down.

Ok who left the screen door open?

The reason why Suns fans are showing up on this blog is due to the fact that Suns fans are general morons, so much so that Suns fans don't even want to interact with their own kind.

Now, I know there are people out there who think that The Big Mistake's addition to the Suns is a great thing (even though they're only 13-9 with The Big Ego dressed like a giant pumpkin). Here's the thing...

Shaq is putting on a show right now because The Big Ego loves the attention of being a "savior" to a new team. He played that role with the Lakers and the Heat. Unfortunately, The Big Baby has ADD and is lazy. As we have seen intimately, The Big C.H.U.D. cannot maintain a long term work ethic.

And now he's getting older, slower, and even more dedicated to the "all you can eat fajitas buffet". The Suns may go deep into the playoffs this year, but this is it and you will not win the Finals. No way.

Now for next three years the Suns have to absorp Shaq's ridiculous contract, as each year he gets slower, more mopy, and lashes out more at his teammates. It will happen, as it's happened before.

Get ready Phoenix! The end is near. You think the Heat have it bad? Well, you are looking at your future in the Miami Heat.

Don't expect mercy from Laker Nation when that happens.

GO LAKERS!

Fire1, I don't think anyone that likes basketball can say they hate the Suns on a basketball only basis. There is a rivalry "hatred" for some, but people do find joy in Nash;s game, STATs athleticism, and scoring.

Now, do I think there have been more fun to watch offenses? Yes, and I can honestly say I'm more of a fan of the Kings offense back in the early 2000s than I was of the Shaq-based triangle or the Sun's simple but effective offense.

My problem with the suns is that they are built upon a strategy and personnel foundation that isn't a championship formula. Not even a dynasty formula.

I absolutely love Steve Nash, but D'antoni's offense is too simple for the playoffs. its perimeter based most of the time, and the few post up mismatches added for the playoffs aren't practiced enough for them to sustain it in a 7 game series.

I would forgive Nash's liability as a defender if you guys had a defensive shot blocker in the paint, but relying on offense to answer for defensive lapses puts all the pressure on you to make sure you score after the other team does. That's not the way it works in the playoffs....good teams can score in the playoffs, great teams can stop people AND score when needed.

On top of that, I don't think Shaq is the answer for you guys. Its just not Suns basketball. As I have come to understand it, Suns basketball has ALWAYS been about running and athleticism. KJ could drive through a brick wall (and probably dunk on it), Tom Chambers could probably win a dunk championship if he were in it today, and Rex Champman or Dan Marjerle could shoot the lights out, even now. How an old Shaq and an older Nash, Hill, Bell, etc fit into that, I'm not sure.....might have to ask Steve Kerr what exactly he is trying to do.

Guys be careful who you ask for in the playoffs.
judging by how you guys have been playing with talks about chemistry and all, I think the question from all the other teams is,
Who do WE want in the first round, and I think they want the lakers.

My Laker Family,

The probable multiple user name from one IP address is becoming cumbersome in our attempt for blog rhythm and prosperity. At this point, we may have to keep in mind our basketball conversations in the Hierarchy of: Latimes Kam Bros Blog, and the sophistication of the Laker fan base. Hence, I admire the embracing of the challenge of other non Laker fans invading our blog. Great job my fam. From the aggressive to the calm assertive replies.Great effing job...

As the world is reading our blog, the more petulant blog entries will arrive.

Too much blog synch think. But Fire 1, I will have a response to your post(s) once I get out of a meeting...

It's amazing when the Lakers play .500 ball during a horrible stretch how this blog goes to trash. I don't mean the KBros, I mean the posters.

Sure, we have our regulars, but sifting out nice posts by real fans amongst the numerous crappy, jealous, troll baiters is exhausting.

J Fatty... good to see you again bro. Glad all is okay with you.

Pig,

If you need any backup with any of these trolls, the Bozz has your back.

-bozz-

Fire32,

Hey man... Did you ever get to check if bling was still on the AZ blog.

Good one

Giantsquid,

I hope you are right. It's just that the Suns are a better team now than they have been all season. Shaq is gelling with his teamates, and he looks more and more like the Shaq of old. I don't think any Western team will stand a chance with a completely healthy Laker squad, but if Bynum (and Ariza) are not 100%, Shaq will win that individual battle against Bynum. Amare is also better than Gasol, and Nash has a pretty big edge over Fish. That's potentially 3 out of the 5 positions that favor the Suns. I've been watching Shaq for too long now to underestimate him, especially when he's this motivated. That's the main reason I want to face the Suns in the WC finals, so Bynum (and Ariza) will be at, or close(r) to 100% healthy.

Laker Nation

I did noticed the vile odor of a lurking TROLL.

Looking into the playoffs........

Frankly I do not see any difference in playing San Antonio, New Orleans, Houston, or Phoenix in the first round, second round, or conference finals. They are all good teams and are equally dangerous. Having said that, the Lakers are still the team to beat in the WC as long as AB comes back at minimum 80% of his old self.

However, I do like to see a first round meeting with the Suns, just so we can get rid of the trolls in this blog and don't have to listen to Shaq's tirade.

Lakers!! Lets send the Suns packing for their Spring holidays!!!!!!!!!!

Actually I have! When a rookie 7'1" 19 year old center on Lakers dunked on his Fat maximus gluteous and he elbowed him but got no T.

Afrojoe,

The old definition of troll (A few months back) was the nature of Non Laker Fan that put down our team on our own blog.

The new definition has cross pollinated to both Non Laker and Laker fans that post negative entries All Things Lakers.

Just MY definition: Sonny Belfast, original non-troll. Fire32 has come a long way. Though I can see why other Laker fans can get annoyed, but in MY eyes, he has posted SOME reality checks that have been good for the blog, (However, a bad taste to some)

Right now I am curious about blingbling (he never liked to be called a troll) as to why he has become a Suns Fans to giving me props.

I think it'll be interesting in 2010 what happens in the free agent market.

That's a good topic actually.

I can't see Wade leaving Miami, considering the likelihood that they'll get Michael Beasley in the draft this year, and have all that Shaq/Marion money coming off the books that year. There's a chance they get Elton Brand this season and they'll have a real nice front court with Beasley, Brand, and Marion. They can build their bench through the Draft and free agency and be competing again by the time Wade is due a new contract. Plus, he lives in Miami.

I think LeBron is gonzo from Celeveland though. He's going to play in Brooklyn for Jay Z and the new look Nets. Unless the Cavs do something really drastic between now and then (probably not likely) they are up the creek.

Where does that leave the Funs? No draft picks, no talent. Time to rebuild.

The Lakers on the other hand . . .
