Nobody's getting cocky

April 25, 2008 |  9:08 am

Kobe_layup_in_game_2 Luke Walton tossed out the reminder after Wednesday's Game 2 win over the Nuggets: "Remember Phoenix," he asked?  Oh yeah.  That.  Walton, of course, is referring to the 2006 first round matchup against the Suns in which the Lakers built up, then lost, a 3-1 series lead.  Those sorts of memories prevent overconfidence, and hone the "killer instinct."  Of course, there are some fundamental differences between that series and the one in which the Lakers currently find themselves, the most important being that now, the Lakers are clearly the better team. They've got Kobe Bryant coming off one of his best games of the season (and there are a lot to choose from), a scoring and passing smörgåsbord that simultaneously buried Denver's chances of stealing a win at Staples and showed the variety of ways Bryant can control a game.

Speaking of which, the Lakers are hoping to control the next two games in the Mile High City, and a little more D won't hurt (though it's worth noting the work LA has done on Carmelo Anthony).  On the other end of things, a little composure would be a bonus for the Nuggets.

Kareem breaks down all sorts of things, from Kobe's Game 2 to Andrew Bynum's recovery:

"Once Kobe has an idea of how you’re coming at him he has plans on how to attack that. If his teammates are paying attention and doing what they need to be doing, he’ll find them and he’ll give them the ball at the appropriate times and then he’ll take the good shots that he gets. He was really efficient last night, shooting 66-percent from the field (18 of 27) including 5-for-9 on three-pointers. It was just an awesome display..."

"...What I try to emphasize with him is the big picture. This playoff season is the first time he’s had a chance to see his team do very well, but we don’t want him to go out there and get hurt and never be able to contribute again..."

The Lakers haven't skipped a beat without Andrew Bynum (remember, they added that Gasol fellow), but that doesn't mean he's not missed.  It's the bone bruise part of the subluxation/bone bruise double whammy that's been the issue.  Still, despite his absence, you can make an argument that maybe Drew is still the team's MVP, at least in the sense that his big jump in production laid the groundwork for their successful season, a happy Kobe, and the Pau Gasol deal that should keep them at/near the top of the Western Conference for the next few seasons.

20 mini-stories from the Denver/Lakers series.

LET's GO TREVOR!

Can we get some focus today on Trevor? We need good vibes, karma, prayers, whatever you can give up to Trevor and his CT scan to show that he is healed and cleared to do whatever is his next step. Can you tell I am no where close to the medical profession? I just want to see progress, a step (no pun intended) in the right direction!

It would be great to get him back for 2nd round whenever that is so he can add a little to our D. If we can all take a moment to send collective good thoughts......

LET's GO LAKERS!

Let's GO MAMBA! Clap-clap-clapclapclap!

Man, why are there so many days between games, I hates it!

I hope the Lakers are practicing in their low-oxygen dome that simulates the high altitude of Denver. What? They don't have one? They have a zero gravity treadmill, but no full court low-oxygen dome???

Congrats LakerGurl!!!
Thanks for being the trailblazer, pioneer, girl power!

You're not bad yourself PsychedLakerGirl. LOL

AMAZING HAPPENS:"They have a zero gravity treadmill, but no full court low-oxygen dome???"

KA CHING!!

I still say to Mark Heisler, Bynum is important to the Laker team but when it comes to MVP teamwise or leaguewise, there is only one. MAMBA. Well, take it this way, Bynum cannot dribble the ball from coast to coast, he has to be fed. Who else gave all the assists on an easy basket? it's MAMBA. Remove Kobe out of the Lakers, we'll be out of the playoffs, with all the frail bodies falling down, LO & Luke were not healthy in the beginning. Pau was not healthy for 2 weeks. Kobe is not healthy but he is still playing despite the needed surgery on a separated or torn pinkie. To him, It is all about mind over matter, who is now the Lakers MVP?

Have you noticed people who have inherent dislike of Kobe always unearthened the summer rant incident, they give credits to everyone but not to Kobe and when he makes those 49 pts explosion, everyone get into his bandwagon including Bill Plaschke. (They are like the patriotic CEO's of oil companies, they embrace the flag but they don't care the price of oil on the pump.) I wonder whether these guys voted for Mamba to be this year's MVP?

LakerGurl,

Props to you for being the honoree today. I second all of Mamba24's commentary.

For those of you who missed it on the earlier thread, here's a repost on the Drama in Denver:

How about THIS for added drama to Saturday's Lakers-Nuggets smackdown on Saturday:

If the Nuggets get swept, the word is that coach George Karl will get tossed by owner Stanley Kroenke. And if Karl gets tossed, he could be headed to New York to work with old pal (and Knicks prez) Donnie Walsh, who hadn’t planned to wait and see who got fired after the first round but has apparently been convinced to do so. The frontrunner is still thought to be Mark Jackson, and Chuck Person appears to be on the list as well. (New York Post)

Well! Gotta wonder how this will affect how Denver plays. Will they give it all up to protect their coach? Will they crumble and fold in confusion about the drama?
Somehow, there's always drama when it comes to the Lakers, even if it's not about them.

What do you guys think is the play of the year so far is?

My votes for Ariza's dunk over Nash. Not only was it ridiculously nasty but it signaled the changing of the guard. On Christmas day it showed the world that the Lakers were for real and that we were finally better than the Suns. It also showed just how good Ariza is. Hopefully we have nothing but good news on that front today.

GO LAKERS

Luke's post season prowess sprouting Horry references?

Not quite Big SHot's highlight package but I like the locker room quotes. Keep it focused. His solid play so far doesn't inspire nicknames but it sure is nice to see.

Morning Blog family ~

Can't wait til tip-off on Saturday. Really hoping to hear some good news on Trevor who can make a huge impact if he's back in action. We need the added "D" he brings....
Running.... more blog time later.

Let's pray for good news on Trevor. We could use some freaking defense!

The NBA playoffs are the best time of the year for me but the league office is making them harder to enjoy with the long layoffs between games, the seemingly 20 minute TV timeouts and the 7 game series in the first round. It's just too slow, too drawn out. But it's all about more profit, right?

Anyone notice in the article about the Nuggets losing composure that JR Smith had ZERO regrets about talking trash to Kobe. What an idiot. Does he want the Mamba to score 60 on him tomorrow? Hell, talk all the trash you want JR. After all, you have accomplished SO much in this league. Moron.

Saturday prediction: Lakers 129 - Nuggets 125. I see Fish and Sasha coming up huge for us in the 4th.

GO LAKERS!

Quick thoughts on this and next series:

-Probably Utah (T-Mac almost lost last night's game for his team down the stretch)

-T-Mac is balls in the playoffs.

- Denver scores a lot of baskets but has NO offense. Watching Denver is like watching grade school ball, except with more talent and tattoos.

- I didn't want to play this team first round. We won't be used to a formulated offense like Utah come round two.

- Pound the paint, get the fouls. That's how we'll beat all these teams.

- No way Utah can beat us. Or Houston for that matter.

- Me likey the Kobe.

"Good Morning Lakers Nation!"

Its good to be a Lakers Fan

Great job in game 2 for Luke. In addition to 3-1 debacle he was referring, what we aspire is that Luke himself becomes consistent. He should also add in his remark his poor performance in last year's last game against Phoenix, he's one of the Lakers producers yet he made only 2 pts. with lots of turnovers. I hope he will turn the tide around and be consistent with his superb performance during these playoffs.

We need every Laker to excel in order to pave the way to Championship. On the road, the fans are not on our side & young players tend to crumple when people are jeering on them. You noticed the games last night, only Rockets won on the road. Cavaliers inspite of LBJ's presence and Magic did not. Therefore, the team has to maintain the posture of leading by a big margin at all times to demoralize the crowd as well as the Denver team. This can be done by strong D and R, then let Kobe, LO and Pau get their numbers.

Good morning all --

Heisler makes it sound like it's inevitable that AB will be out for the rest of the run. Is that accurate? I don't remember hearing anything official.

So - PJ noted that the guys were tired yesterday & said they were lazy during practice....

Do we need to worry? I mean it's just practice, right? It's not like it's a game - it's just practice. I mean if it was a game....but it was practice. Do you see what I'm saying? Just practice - not a game - just practice....

GO LAKERS!

As D'antoni said, "6 million of them out here, who cares if we lose 1 or 2 off a cliff"

Rick - That's an interesting tidbit you mentioned there. I knew Karl was on thin ice, but not that thin. I don't think that's going to motivate his players much though. I get the feeling that they don't really listen to him anymore and that he pretty much hates his own team. But that's just me. We'll see how it plays out tomorrow.

Mamba24,

Just like that Singer from Graceland.

Was it a MRI or CT on his "PPPEEEEEEEELLLLLVis!"

Justa:

That caught my attention, too. Don't know if Phil is trying to pump them up or if they really were skating a bit in practice. The one good thing is they have today to do the heavy lifting in practice so they're ready for tomorrow.Gotta come out focussed and intense and on a mission. I want to see a foot on 'Enver's throats by halftime, and nobody let them even breath the rest of the game. We get a good win tomorrow, and Monday is a "gimme" for the sweep!

IS ARIZA COMING BACK?

HAS HE BEEN CLEARED?

TODAY IS FRIDAY!!!!!!

Hey yall-

Unfortunately qoute of the playoffs is not Kobe Bean Bryant's anymore.

It belongs to the Washington Wizards fans. remeber how the Yankee fans killed Pedro with "Who's your daddy" ? Take up the same theme and say:

"OVER-RATED......OVER-RATED......OVER-RATED.......OVER-RATED."

That's you're qoute of the 08 playoffs so far.

Although they could use smarter words and say OVERHYPED but it wouldn't ryhme so they have that excuse.

Sorry BK it's not me it's the Wiz fans.

Mr. Barney - agree with you on play of the year. Statement for sure. A close 2nd would be KB24's double pump reverse at end of NOH game couple weeks ago.

Rick F. - any more doubt or distraction to put in the Thug's heads sounds good to me. Beat em when their down.

Justanother: don't think the practice was a problem - PJ said he kept them later than he thought to hammer home some defensive items - so that's all good in my book. Maybe some of it will carryover in their heads.

I liked the focus I heard in the interviews - good confidence and knowledge that all they did was protect home court. I think that bodes well - they have to win one on the road which is another step in the journey for this young group.

Then, on Sunday (not trying to look ahead too far), we can all bring out our brooms and start cheering that we are almost out of the 1st round. It's all good!

Who wants to get drunk with the Kam Bros to celebrate their awards?

SAM "Bowie disclosed that guilt over the fact that he was earning good money after being picked by the Blazers resulted in him rushing back to action too soon from his injury"

That historical perspective, $80 million and a long, bright future is why B's Knee is taking so long, or too long depending on how you spin it.

He's as close to greatness as he is to re injured and a Bowie size NBA footnote, but that risk comes with the dinner. Waiting is understandable but it's worrisome to ponder the possibilities of why it's taking so long.

FairWeather Fatty:"5. Flatten Suns fan with car......"

No Fatty man, don't do it! LOL!

Zakee at al: patience is a virtue - just chill for a few more hours and have faith the AK/BK will be the first to report back to us.

Vincent Thomas of Slamonline came up with the perfect title for Lamar Odom: "Franchise Role Player". I don't even think it's an insult, it just tells you the type of player that he is. Coaches love that type of player!

I've got another term to add that I thought of while I was at Game 2: "National TV Defense", defined as the type of defense Kobe only plays when the game is nationally televised. You know what I'm talking about. If it's a local broadcast, Kobe will roam and gamble. Hey, no one's perfect!

If they are looking at the ligaments and tendons then it will be a MRI. If they want to look at just the bone then it will be a CT scan.
Later fellow laker brothers and sisters
Keeping the Laker flow strong here in East Lansing!!

Fairweather Fatty -

"Flatten Suns fan with car"

Didn't your mama teach you not to kick people when their down?

Charles,

He's been getting CT scans up until now. I've heard that he's getting an MRI this time, but that seems like misinformation. MRIs are typically used for soft tissue damage assessment, whereas CT scans and Xrays are for bone. I'd bet it's a CT for which the result are available within a very short time.
