News that won't make y'all happy, I presume
But we're nonetheless gonna report it, because that's how we roll around on this blog.
Just got an emailed update from the Lakers PR dept. Apparently, Andrew Bynum hasn't been cleared for contact or practice drills just quite yet, per his examination in the Big Apple. The doc says it's not considered a "setback" in his recovery. We'll try to find out more later at today's game. But at any rate, that's the latest.
The official (and very brief) announcement is below the jump.
UPDATE: More from Eric Pincus at Hoopsworld.com.
AK
EL SEGUNDO-
Lakers center Andrew Bynum was examined yesterday in
New York
by knee specialist Dr. David Altchek and has not been cleared to progress to full practices or contact drills, it was announced today.
“This should not be seen as a setback in any way,” said Altchek. “Andrew will continue with his therapy program and workouts with the Lakers’ training staff and will continue to be monitored until he can return to playing status.”
There is no target date for Bynum’s return.

It's a downer for sure but I'd rather The Beast come back 100% than risk a more severe injury. Our future is bright, that's for sure.
Without The Beast, we're a good team that can match up with anybody. With him in the lineup, we're head and shoulders above them. So, yes, they should exercise caution and bring him back only when he's 100%.
Go Bynum! Wishing and praying for a faster recovery.

AK BK and Fam,
Any news at this point if the staff has considered the surgery worthy knee?

I would be glad to. I'll give him something that'll make him leap higher than he's lept before, defend like he's never defended before, and dunk with more power than he ever knew he had. I'll get the kid on the court baby!!! :-)
I'll be waiting for his big a** over here. If I have it my way, L.A. will be playing right here in Boston in the Finals and I'll be right there. I don't care if I have to take out a line of credit on my house for tickets.

Afternoon, Charles and peeps.
Happy birthday, Faith!
Which reminds me, in light of the news above, to heed the birthday girl's constant advice.
...because it's beginning to look a lot like "next year".
But seriously, better safe than sorry when it comes to Drew's health -- and this team is capable without him if they play hard and get some breaks. Which seems like a longshot at this point.... but I will "have faith".

I'm thinking the Lakers will finish #3 seed and play the Houston Rockets.

The "no timetable or target date for Andrew Bynum's return" is what I'm sick and tired of hearing and reading. It's gone from a minimum of 8 wks to 12 wks to now what?!!! Gilbert Arenas returned early this season from off season knee surgery and then got another knee surgery and is back on the court for the Wizards. Elton Brand wasn't expected back at all this year from an achilles injury and yet he's playing the last meaningless games for the Clippers. Bynum didn't even have surgery on his knee and yet he's not able to practice or endure any contact which is baffling and frustrating. It will be three months since Andrew injured his knee when the playoffs begin and he's still not even ready for contact and practice? Sucks.
As much as it pains me to write this, if the Lakers draw the Suns in the first round without Bynum, the Suns will eliminate them for the third year in a row and the Suns will have a golden opportunity to win another title for the Big Ego(Shaq). After watching how the Suns have handled the Spurs twice, I'm convinced that only the Lakers with Andrew can beat the Suns in the playoffs this year. No Andrew, no answers(for all our defensive woes and soft play in the paint). And to think that the Doctor said that it " shouldn't be viewed as a setback". If having Andrew(even an 80% Andrew)is the difference this year in whether or not the Lakers win a title is a huge setback. It's a shame because I think Kobe decided to play with his injured finger instead having surgery because he was banking on Bynum coming back. Don't get me wrong, with Pau we're still formidable, but he doesn't bring what Andrew did on the boards and the defensive end. That's why I'm fearful even with Pau that we won't fare well in the first round if we get the wrong matchup. Damn, I'm starting to sound like some the guys on here that fancy themselves realists(I won't name any names).

As much s___t as our training staff has been getting lately, let's not lose sight of a simple fact: Vitti and his team have been regularly getting Laker players healthy into the Finals since the early 80's. I think they've earned the benefit of the doubt. I put no stock in the fact that unaccomplished franchises like PHX and/or DAL have shinier and newer equipment. That doesn't equal medical quality.
I suspect PHX especially of having the McMansion of athletic training, if you follow my drift.
I hope Bynum gets the best medical care/advice and returns with a vengeance.
Posted by: The D | April 10, 2008 at 02:34 PM
Oh well, now the truth finally is out. So AB is not returning after all.
I bet you the Lakers coaching staff knew about this long time ago. That was why we are trying to place ourselves in the seeding to play Houston--the best possible matchup with Bynum.

Andrew Bynum's Injury is a serious Distraction.
Phill needs to sit him for the year and focus on what the team is, not what it may someday be.
Posted by: Shaq-Fu | April 10, 2008 at 02:35 PM
I forgot about Trevor. I'm pretty sure he's done for the year.
I'm putting my hopes on the misinformation bandwagon. I'm with Edwin Gueco and PsychedLakerGirl. *Sigh* I'm still hoping to see The Beast wreak havoc in the playoffs.
Where there's life, there's hope... I always say.

"“Andrew will continue with his therapy program and workouts with the Lakers’ training staff and will continue to be monitored until he can return to playing status.”
Well you guys weren't going to beat us anyway. So, I do dare you to play us first round. You saw my 16points last night of dominance. Just think what I will do to Pau and Lamar.
THE BIG CACTUS
Posted by: The Big Cactus | April 10, 2008 at 02:38 PM
Jackson likes to sit his starters at the end of the season but how many minutes are Kobe and Lamar logging for the last 10 games?
This does sound like Pj misinformation - possible trojan horse setup for drew.
According the PJ this isn't the first knee injury Bynum has experienced - except that it was last time it was his other knee.
Posted by: Shaq-Fu | April 10, 2008 at 02:40 PM
This news may seem terrible, but it's definitely not terribly surprising. For those of you who, like me, saw the injury happen, you know we're fortunate that it was even possible for AB to come back this year. Maybe we get him back for the 2nd round; I think we can handle the Rockets (probable 1st round opponent) without him, but after that we're gonna need him if we want to go any further. I've set myself up to not be crushed if we don't win it all this year. Next year's a different story.

PHIL JACKSON HAS TO GO
Posted by: pfunk36 | April 10, 2008 at 02:00 PM
Now, don't say that, this is the greatest coach ever as long as he has the best player in the world and another one of the top five players in the world on his team.
Hasn't anybody noticed the great strategic breakthroughs since Pau Gasol joined the team? The minute he showed up, Jackson started coaching better. And the way he gets his team playing to a high standard every night, even against the likes of Memphis, Charlotte and Portland is inspiring.
Now he's starting with the defensive fundamentals four games before the Playoffs. Now THAT'S coaching.
Just hope the Clippers don't come out in a zone defense. How does an NBA team attack that? Don't ask Phil.
Posted by: Jman449 | April 10, 2008 at 02:43 PM
If what was played on in the press regarding Bynum's condition the last few months is true--the "on again off again" scenario that we have been hearing, all I can say is: I don't want this medical team anywhere near me!!!!!!!!!
One word sums it up for me.. INCOMPENTENT!!!
Posted by: Robyn | April 10, 2008 at 02:43 PM
Toad,
You made a good and very valid point and I totally agree with you, why risk further injury?
Also how do we really know that Drews not ready to go? Honestly, would any of you be surprised if Drew just suddenly got "better" and returned to play? What if the FO is just trying to pull off a major mind f*ck on other teams? I think Doctor.Buss is sick (brilliant) enough to do that.
Posted by: Elle | April 10, 2008 at 02:45 PM
This news it tough for us fans, rough for the team but, more so than anything terrible for Drew. You can tell he's starving to get back to action, and it looks like he's doing everything in his power to make it back.... The darn knee just isn't ready to go. We can do it but it starts tonight LAKERS. SMUSH THE CLIPPERS FOR AB-17!

Posted by: Hugo Boss | April 10, 2008 at 02:46 PM
My concern is our play of late even with Pau back in the lineup. I think teams feel that they can get physical with Pau in the post and disrupt his game. Pau also doesn't crash the boards with any physicality and doesn't block or alter shots the way Andrew does. This why Kobe is constantly saying how the Lakers are a different team with Andrew manning the middle because of his shot blocking and shot altering ability which makes it difficult for small guards to come into the paint and shred the Lakers defense. Pau must rebound better and become more of a defensive presence in the paint in order for the Lakers to go deep in these playoffs because we just can't depend on outscoring teams. Pau's best contribution so far has been on the offensive end and his passing, but we're going to need more from him to go all the way.

Don't ask the Red Sox, they broke the curse already. Ask the Cubs. I believe their curse is 99 years and counting.
Relax, our last championship wasn't that long ago. The Suns have never won a championship in their entire franchise history. They have about two years to win it, we should have the next 15 with Bynum.
I'm bummed out too, but if we get him back for the first round we'll be ok. The only negative is his timing and maybe our defensive rotations. The positive? The Lakers will be a complete surprise for us the fans - but more importantly the other teams. Personally, I think the Lakers should just announce that he' a done for the season and pull a Dirk on Staples during the first round. That'll get Mr. Mo to change jerseys for sure.

I'm not to surprised about the news, i actually didn't expect to see bynum back into the line until the playoffs anyways. You kind of had to figure that would be the case after the amount of time he's missed up to this point. I don't expect him to back until the 2nd wk of the playoffs.
Odom will just just have to step it up again for the playoffs:

Elle,
I think you may be on to something. After thinking about it for a while and letting it soak in, and I've considered the option that maybe the organization i keeping something secret from us. Let's say we draw the Rockets in the first round, an easily beatable team, and that we take them out relatively quickly, we'll have some extra time for all the guys to get some rest. What if AB comes back then in the second round, a secret ace in the sleeve of the entire Lakers organization? While we were dispatching our first round foe, AB was working with the staff to take care of any little nuisances that may be preventing him from returning, let's say, in the next two or three games. The Lakers FO are a bunch of sneaky buggers, and something like this would definitely not be out of the picture. Just something to consider...

Shaq-Fu,
Distraction is right. With the race in the West being so tight and seeds still being determined, the daily is he or isn't he going to play must be in the back of all the players minds right now even if they don't come out and say so. Pau eases the burden and fills the void, but in the playoffs we're going to need to make stops which is something these Lakers have been unable to do consistently since Bynum went down. Not getting clearance today may be a bad omen for our team, but I hope not.

!!!LAKERS SHOULD BE HAPPY TO LOSE!!!
Check this out. I've run through many potential scenarios for playoff seedings and I think the most favorable one in terms of eventual matchups will require that the Lakers LOSE a few more games and drop to the #5 spot. Yes, we will lose home court advantage, but it is worth it for the favorable bracket. Follow me here...
Of the eight teams in the Western Conference, there are really only three seeds that are realistically up for grabs. New Orleans will almost certainly have the #1 seed. The Jazz (given their very tough schedule) will almost certainly end up with the #4 seed since they can go no lower. The Rockets aren't likely to outpace the Suns, Lakers or Spurs and are likely to end up with the #6 seed. The Mavericks are all but locked in at #7. And who cares who gets #8 because they aren't getting past the first round, but for sake of argument let's just say it's the Warriors.
So, the seedings that are fairly certain are as follows:
1. New Orleans
2. ???
3. ???
4. Utah
5. ???
6. Houston
7. Dallas
8. Golden State
The three ???s go to either the Spurs, the Suns or the Lakers, and all three are interchangeable because all three teams could end up with records better than the Jazz. The #2 seed will face Dallas in the first round. I'm confident in my Lakers, but if I can avoid a first round against the Mavericks, I would do it. The #3 seed will have an easy first round opponent in the Rockets, but will end up facing the Mavericks/Spurs/Suns/Lakers in the second round, which is sure to be the toughest series of the Western Conference. The #5 seed will face Utah in the first round and New Orleans in the second round. Now, I realize Utah is great at home and that New Orleans has the best record in the West, but I don't think many people will argue that that road is far easier than a Mavericks/Spurs/Suns road.
So, I say let's get good practice in these next couple of games, but let's shoot for that #5 seed! As an added bonus, a low seed might cost Kobe the MVP award. The award is usually announced in the middle of the second round of the playoffs, which would be when the Lakers are playing the Hornets. Assuming Chris Paul wins the award, can you imagine how motivated Kobe will be to win that series?
I know we all want to see the Lakers with the best seed possible, but I think this is the best option for us.
Thoughts?

Until Bynum is back on the court, we're not overreacting. I think most people are just pissed off at how vague the reports are in regards to what's really going on and the constant "no timetable or target date for his return" crap. Right now Arenas is playing and Bynum is not regardless of the similarities of what was said by the medical staff, training staff and media about their return. All I'm asking for as a fan is that the aforementioned people should just be honest and forthright about Bynum's condition and whether or not he's going to play of if he's done. Nuff said.
Posted by: Nemaia Faletogo | April 10, 2008 at 03:16 PM
what up Laker Nation,
I'm a huge fan of the lakers and this blog. I've been reading everyone's comments for some time now. I just want to reiterate what some have mentioned here - the Lakers' medical staff truly is incompetent. Several of my friends are involved in herbal medicine or chiropractic medicine who agree with me. While there is a lot of quackery in these areas, there is also a lot to be gained from them (this might be why the Suns' medical staff is highly regarded - they incorporate these "alternative" techniques) .
Having the same trainers around for a long time is not good. These people do not update their medical knowledge like they should. New, young medical personnel with the latest training should be brought in by the Lakers. Andrew Bynum's injury should have healed a long time ago. He's young, strong, and dedicated. But the staff has managed to screw it up . They are not utilizing the full spectrum of therapies, including herbs, accupressure/acupuncture/oriental techniques, yoga, etc. out there that are PROVEN in the scientific literature to be effective for these and all kinds of injuries.
Trevor is out for the year, most likely. Bynum , regardless of this latest news, has been out too long as it is. And Pau, don't forget, the normally fast healer while in Memphis, suddenly took a lot longer to heal from a similar ankle injury while under the care of the Lakers' staff.

Robyn you have the right idea. (not as a starter though..)
Give Mbenga some run and let him be our enforcer. Swat, swing, push, shove, elbow... Just comand the paint and bring the pain.

Don't worry Laker fans. Until the playoff roster is submitted, we won't know the real story.
Me thinks AB will be on the playoff roster while TA, DJ and Karl be the cheerleaders.
Go Lakers!
Posted by: Laker Phil | April 10, 2008 at 03:21 PM
Don't fret guys. We need him 100% for the playoffs. At this point, finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd doesn't really make THAT much of a difference. Yes it would be nice to end regular season 1st, but the REAL season is most important. So as long as AB is back by playoffs or even a few games into playoffs - we will be fine.

Blog-sync-think. Would you push with surgery at this point if you definitely knew that he's not coming back for the playoff's?

The D,
Remember Karl Malone's injury (who never got injured)? It took Gary Vitti forever to get him back on the court and he was practically crippled in the Finals. If Karl Malone would have been healthy, I think we would have beated Detroit in the Finals.
GO LAKERS!
Posted by: Jon K. | April 10, 2008 at 03:32 PM
This means we really really really need to avoid Dallas and the offensive rebounding beatdowns they put on us. Without Drew, a 7 game series vs the little Mavs is a 50-50 proposition, not good for the first round.
Thus the 2 spot would be nice to avoid, as Dallas at #7 and NO at #1 are about the only things set in the Wild Wild West.

Don't you guys think that would've been the Baptism of Fire for a recovering-recovered knee anyways?

Does anyone know?
Doesn't Bynum have to play in a regular season game to be ready for the playoffs?
Two years ago Mihm was ready to play against the Suns but had to wait for the second round which never came.
So, for Bynum to play in the first round of the playoffs when does he have to be cleared by?
Thanks,
Wes
Posted by: wesjoenixon | April 10, 2008 at 03:40 PM
VMan,
Curses usually last seven years, unless you're the Chicago Cubs when they last forever.
However, despite the disappointment I feel at the delaying of the Releasing of the Kraken, I still have I believe a reasonable faith that we will make the NBA Finals.
Can we beat the hated Celtics in the Finals without Bynum? Maybe, but it'll be a struggle indeed.
Without Bynum, I'm pretty confident that we will not finish worse than third seed, but will mostly likely finish at a second seed.
Maybe I don't know any better, but I don't see New Orleans able to get past the second round of the playoffs. I think they're going to end up playing Utah and I think Utah will beat them 4-2, maybe 4-1.
So, despite the tremendous joy I would feel if we Released the Beast this Sunday, we've still got one hell of a team here. If we can shore up our guard defense a bit, we are going to be very difficult for anyone to beat.
If I'm not mistaken, we do have that Kobe Bryant character still on our team, which is helpful, I think.
NO MVP? NO PEACE!
GO LAKERS!

Our chances of winning in the first round depends on whether or not Pau gives us more on the defensive end because he's the last line of defense back there.
The Rockets have been successful even without Yao Ming because of the defensive presence of Mutombo and because the Rockets are committed to playing defense. The Lakers must adopt some type of defensive mindset for the playoffs or they'll be in trouble. A defensive minded big man can change and dictate the tempo of the game even if he isn't an offensive force. That's the difference between Andrew and Pau. Andrew played evenly on both ends of the court(balanced offensively and defensively), while Pau is more of an offensive minded big man with defense obviously secondary to him. We've been fortunate to outscore most teams because of our offensive prowess, but teams haven't had much trouble scoring on us and it has been difficult to get stops when we really need to.

Bynum out 6 more weeks?
This from hoopsworld:
"RUMOR HAS IT…
Today's section is geared exclusively towards the latest rumor floating around the NBA …
Six Weeks? In what could be a significant factor in the Los Angeles Lakers postseason run, a source close to the situation says Andrew Bynum may miss an additional six weeks.
While details are very sketchy, Bynum recently flew to New York to visit knee specialist David Altchek. The hope was Bynum would be cleared to practice with the team and finally return after temporarily dislocating his kneecap.
It's not clear why Bynum would need to fly all the way across country to be cleared; the source indicates that the exam revealed that Bynum simply isn't ready yet.
This mirrors recent words by Kurt Rambis who told local radio that Bynum was hesitant on the knee when practicing one-on-one with the Lakers' assistant coach. Rambis expressed doubt that Bynum would be back this week.
The Lakers have proven to be a potent team despite Bynum's absence especially with the acquisition of Pau Gasol. How capable they'll be in the postseason without Bynum remains to be seen.
There is no official word on Bynum's progress. Certainly information is misconstrued from time to time but at this point the buzz in Los Angeles is that Bynum will miss at least one or even two rounds of the playoffs.
Update: The Los Angeles Lakers released the following statement today:
Lakers center Andrew Bynum was examined yesterday in New York by knee specialist Dr. David Altchek and has not been cleared to progress to full practices or contact drills, it was announced today.
"This should not be seen as a setback in any way," said Altchek. "Andrew will continue with his therapy program and workouts with the Lakers' training staff and will continue to be monitored until he can return to playing status."
There is no target date for Bynum's return."
Oh no.
