More time to record than write

April 24, 2008 |  7:46 pm

I had to drive straight from Laker practice to Dodger stadium for tonight's game (I know many of y'all consider the Blue a low priority right now, but we're still getting the green to cover them), meaning there wasn't a ton of time for a nitty gritty breakdown of today's practice via the art of wordsmithing.  Fortunately, today's practice was removed of those little quirks BK and I live for (save the oddly amusing sight of Kurt Rambis using the space age treadmill), meaning you're not missing anything along those lines.  More importantly, the report may be short on typed words, but it's long on Lakers yakking.  Lot o' iPod captured copy.  A feast for the ears, if not necessarily the eyes.

One quick note: Ronny Turiaf, who's been tagged with the "tonsillitis" label, said he's feeling a little better thanks to some "great medicine" from the doctor he was en route to visit.  One catch, however.  The ailment has made talking a difficult proposition.  As anyone who's spent time around arguably the most outgoing Laker will agree, it's hard not to find that a little ironic.  At any rate, he's guessing Saturday's game will be a go.

fire gary viti, look at much he has cost us http://theassociation.blogs.com/the_association/lakers/index.html he cost us the ring in 1989, 2004, and possibly this year (not that we cant win the cham[ionship this year without bynum and ariza, but i think that with them we will handle everone in 4-5 games). this guy has been with us for 27 years. the lakers with all their money shoulg get the best tainers out there. tell how a young, athletic, 7 foot 300 pound 20 year old misses four months with an injury that doesn't require surgery, but gilbert arena who just came off of serious injuries including surgery got the same exact injury bynum got in game 3 is day to day. Yes a veteran that has a history of getting injured before a young player who has never been injured before? Join the Fire Gary Viti bandwagon!

Ok Slow News day but heres something, Larry Brown is more than likely heading back the the NBA and I have a gut feeling Mark Cuban put a bug in his ear even though if he went to Enver, I could see it helping them

to all those who thought kobe's game was terrible in game 1....

http://www.respectkobe.com/?p=30

yeah kobe had a bad shooting night but to put him in the "bad" column is saying he had a negative impact on the game and that's just BS

he was still a VERY positive impact on the game and a huge part of why we won it

thats just how KOBE rolls

ben , i'm with you .
look at the injury that dirk nowitzki had, it look like he was going to miss the rest of the season, but he returned in 2 weeks.

so far tonight, the home teams have roared back from 0-2 deficits...

be warned, lake show fans ... i'm down for the sweep (and have called such since jump) but we gotta come out focused on saturday

denver may not be the smartest team, but they're still talented. the nuggets will be ready so we better be too...

"tonsillitis" ... i wonder how that's gonna affect ronny in that thin air?

ben, VINNY,

Hard to disagree with you guys. It's now 14 weeks and counting since Andrew Bynum went down and they still don't have a clue when he'll return. Sure there was the "minimum" of 8 weeks, but it's been 6 weeks since the "minimum" 8 weeks have passed. Does anyone know what the maximum healing time is for such an injury? Does anyone know of anyone else that has suffered this type of injury and how long it took that person to come back?

where is bynum?

Slow news day, so let's talk about this:

DWYANE WADE RUMORED TO BE DATING STAR JONES!!!!!

WTF??!! He's Dwyane Fricking Wade, and he plays in Miami, home to more 10's than you can imagine, and he's dating Oprah lite?

Is this what a losing season will do to a guy?

Houston playing the Jazz tough, I hope they pull it off just to extend that series, get us some rest. Hopefully at least get Ariza back.

GO LAKERS

As much as Houston tried to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, the Jazz managed to extend the series and assure themselves of some more Texas BBQ next week.
94-92 Houston.

is there anyone out there with a medical background who can stop all this foolish "blame the trainers" nonsense?

I am sorry, but all this blaming the training staff is just getting petty and ignorant.

Bynum dislocated his entire kneecap, Dirk had a mild sprain in his ankle.

I never hear anyone applauding the staff when Kobe comes back weeks earlier than expected. It is just time to recognize that different athletes with different injuries heal differently. I would have thought this would have been an obvious statement but apparently it's not.

Houston wins in Utah to extend the series. Lakers must take care of business in Denver and come out focused and determined to crush any confidence that the Nuggets might have. I really admire the heart and hard work of the Rockets twin terrors in Luis Scola and Carl Landry. These two rookies play with serious hustle and passion which is why the Rockets are tough in the paint on the both ends of the floor.

Nice Job HOU

Tire them out a bit for us

Kobesbaaaaad

On the first game, it was fiesta for Pau and LO and drought for Kobe. Second game, Kobe got out of the cage and unload his explosion. Third game, it will be physical, running game and they will seal the 3 players. Those are the adjustments to be made, therefore it is for the role players to to shine but most of all DEFENSE is the most important asset of a visiting team. The home team will have the help of the crowd so their adrenalin will be empower them just like the Wizzards had done tonight. However, not all teams can win it all. The mighty Jazz lost to Yao-less Rockets.

I want to believe that NBA is an honest institution that games are never fixed until we lstumbled last year the Donaghy scandal. In era of economic hardships, a leading team will slow down and see if the weaker team can catch up. Let us see whether that theory works with the Lakers.

Hey K-bros,
You don't need to "go blue"!!

Ariza had a broken foot, Bynum had bone bruise of the patella. And yet, Ariza is coming back. It is broken foot, folks that already healed. We are talking of a 20 year old kid whose ligaments easily heal. It really sounds fishy but it is true as Nemeia Faletogo said, it is now going 14 weeks and no end in sight. Are we being taken for a ride?

Indeed, It is not for us to ask, the reason why? We have been condoitioned to accept hard facts even when someone lies. What makes this blog unique, we have all kinds of opinions here that roll, the homers, the contrarians, the dissenters, the inquisitive minds, the Yes men, the NO men, the apologists, the haters. It is a big tent of whack-jobs within the Laker fans family.

CBuck,

Some reliable source had reported that Ronny was just faking illness to allow Coby to play against his Dad.
You know Ronny, he is a consummate team player--he made a sacrifice to provide the ultimate father-son NBA experience.
NBA... where amazing sacrifice happens...

Ben Vinny Nemaia

Aloha Guys, You are so wrong about Gary Vitti. He is an Athletic trainer, not a doctor. If you want to fire someone start a fire the medical staff bandwagon. Gary is one of the best trainers in the business. His job is to stop the bleeding if cut, or stitch you up at half time. He may be the most VALUABLE Laker staff menber this year, because it has been his innovative tape job on Kobes hand that has kept Kobe on the floor and playing at a high level. Gary may assist in the rehab of players but it is the medical staff that evaluates and comes up with rehab programs.

As far as Bynum goes I dont know if the doctors missed something or he reinjuried himself or what the deal is. But Ariza is different. He broke a bone and there isnt anything that can make a bone heal faster. Remember, there was concerns about Trevors feet at trade time. If he has structural problems in his feet it could explain the long recovery. We may even want to consider if we want to resign him. Bill Waltons carrear was cut short because he kept breaking his feet. If there is a structural problem then it may not be worth it.

A Nuggets blogger's take on game 2 and Den...excuse me....'enver's 'efense:
http://www.pickaxeandroll.com/2008/4/24/460198/2008-nba-playoffs-game-2-d

A couple astute observations and a couple funny lines in there.....
....and the last line of the post reads:
"Make sure you head over to Forum Blue and Gold and the LA Times Lakers Blog for more superb coverage."

Mark Heisler (http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers
/la-sp-heisler25apr25,1,4609700.column) reminds us that last summer the Lakers offered Lamar and Andrew Bynum to Minnesota for Garnett. That leaves me wondering what's going through Kevin McHale's head today as he watches the drama of the playoffs from the comfort of the lottery. Could he be thinking, "Odom would have been the best player on the Wolves and teamed with Bynum and Foye we would be on our way to becoming an elite team"? Or perhaps he doesn't give a hang about the Wolves (who pay his salary); he's just basking in the prospect of another title for the Celtics, while at the same time worried that the Lakers may now take that dream away from him because he didn't have the presence of mind to take Odom off their hands. (The question remains: would a Kobe-Garnett duo in LA without Odom and with Kwame in the lineup be anywhere near as good as what we have now even with Bynum injured).

Could some enterprising journalist try to interview McHale to find out what he is thinking these days? I think that would make an exciting story.

I had my tonsils taken out when I was a little kid when I had tonsillitis, and a decade later I got a throat infection and the doctor told me I had tonsillitis.

Imagine my surprise...my tonsils had grown back. I kept 'em this time.

PSlakerfan - I am in desert over Mem Day weekend. Beer Hunter meeting for LAL game? I am feeling good that we will still be playing then.

Let me know when and I will be there........sorry for the delay in response....

Viti.......It seems like when anyone other than "SuperMan" gets injured they are out much longer than first anticipated.
Bynum and Ariza this year. Chris Mihm every year. Any many other much shorter term injuries that just don't seem to always go way beyond the later end of the expected range. Fire Viti.

Hey guys,

I saw pictures on cnnsi of Dwyane Wade and Star Jones with a captioning mentioning something about them dating???

WTF??? I thought D-Wade was happily married to his high school sweet heart. Did they divorce?

I thought former People Magazine's "Mr. Most Beautiful Person" was sooooooooooo devoted to long time wifey Siobhan (or whatever her name is)?? What Mr. Beautiful is committing adultery with said liposuction-having Star Jones??? SayItAintSo!

So Wade does Idolize Shaq after all...

Bynum is SHUT down for the year which now INCLUDES the remainder of the playoffs (at least that is what the LaTimes is suggesting) so why are some of us insisting on holding our collective breaths with hopes of a miraculous return?????

Change of Subject and this is regarding the Dallas Mavericks..

Avery is on the hot seat ya think? I am wondering why he won't play Ty Lue on Chris Paul or at least flirt with idea?? I know Paul in a "zone" if you will bu tstill. Its funny how many of the teams with our former players just USE them when they play against our team (perhaps thinking they have an inside track into the triangle and a player's habits) but when its a diff team many of those same players get no run.

Elyse,

you wrote: I never hear anyone applauding the staff when Kobe comes back weeks earlier than expected. It is just time to recognize that different athletes with different injuries heal differently. I would have thought this would have been an obvious statement but apparently it's not.

my response:

Kobe has a "personal" training/fitness team of ~ 6 people in
addition to what the Lakers have. He's reported this publicly
a number of times. When Kobe has a soft tissue injury he
stays awake "the entire night" after the injury doing rehab.
To my knowledge, "NO ONE" else is competitive enough to
do this on the Lakers.

re: Bynum. It is my understanding that there was no ligament
damage and only a bone bruise. I have NO idea why a 20
year old hasn't recovered quickly.

Yes different people with different injuries heal at different
rates. However, you'd expect that professional athletes, who
are in the top 1% of human specimens, would be dealing
faster/higher metabolic rates than normal folks. i.e. With out
a 9 - 5 and tons of $$ and the best medical that $$ can buy,
why can't the Lakers athletes heal as fast as athletes on
other professional basketball teams?

Trevor Day?

Let's go left foot
clap clap clap clap
Let's go left foot
clap clap clap clap

or is it the right one?

Did you guys see how Shane Battier was playing last night? He was practically running around on one leg. Reminds me of Willis Reed.

Ben & Vinny,

I'm not saying that Gary Vitti is the worst trainer ever, but something is clearly wrong, despite the protests of BK.

For the last five years, I can't recall a SINGLE injury in which the player returned to the court earlier that expected. (Or even "as expected.") That kind of consistency does not happen by accident, despite the complexity of healing.

Five years is enough to establish a pattern.

AND the Lakers training staff CLEARLY screwed up Karl Malone and Chris Mihm's injuries. The way that Karl Malone's injury was handled effectively ended his career and lost us the 2003 NBA Championship. Not good at all.

GO LAKERS!

Don't blame Viti. It's the curse of Shaq-Fu.

Mihm's foot & ankle.
Brown's hands.
Bynum's knee.
Gasol's ankle.
Turiaf's throat.

Every Laker center suffers differently - watch out DJ.

Good morning LAL friends!

Like the interviews - the guys seemed to be in good spirits and loose. KB24 is pretty funny when he allows his humor to come out.

Ronny - get better - we need your energy in SLC!!!

LET's GO LAKERS!

Good morning Mamba24, good morning Charles & everyone else here at this fabulous, award-winning LA TIMES LAKERS BLOG!! LOL!

Well - I think we need to learn a lesson from what happened last night. If we don't come out with a huge amount of focus & determination, we could lose this one to the McMuggets. I'm thinking we'll be good, but still a bit concerned about it. Even so, the way Kobe's been fired up in this series I think he's got the boys not only believing they'll win the series, but the whole thing! I just want to at least keep pace with the West so we'll get some rest before Round 2.

GO LAKERS!

The BEAN for MVP and FINALS MVP or NO PEACE!

No CHAMPIONSHIP - NO PEACE!

Good Morning Mamba24, Good Morning Charles, Good Morning Laker Nation!

I have to wait another 30 plus hours for my Lakers Playoof fix? Dang, let's just play tonight and then again tomorrow and get it over with! I'm sure 'Enver would prefer a short, quick killing rather than a slow painful one! Let's close this series out Monday!

LET'S GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fingers crossed for Trev today.

Congrats on the awards Bros.

Present and accounted for.

Mamba24,

I don't feel sorry for Iverson. He stuck a gun in his uncle's mouth and threatened to kill him and then got away with it through bribery and intimidation. The guy's one hell of a player, but a completely worthless human being.

GO LAKERS!

Maybe the Lakers are trying to save Bynum for a "Willis Reed" type entrance for Bynum in game 7 vs. the Celtics!!

Good Morning Family!

{As PsychedLakerGirl said, "Stop complaining, Jon!" She's right.}

GOOD MORNING LAKER NATION!

THE WAR MOVES ON TO DENVER!

Yeah, I'm thinking that if Denver is unable to win Game Three of the series, that they won't be able to win a single game at all.

I have been predicting a five game series, but I'm thinking that it could be a sweep. That thousand yard many Nouguts had (including Iverson) at the beginning of Game Two said volumes. This is a mentally weak, internally divided team. Morale is everything for them. They don't believe they can win this series and, therefor, can't. It's simply a matter of how quickly they descend into a self-destructive spiral.

If the Lakers are able to keep the crowd out of Game Three (or the crowd is simply non-ethusiastic), it's over. By "it's over" I mean the sweep is predetermined.

By the way, I said a little prayer for Trevor Ariza last night. His evaluation is today. I admonish Laker Nation to pray for a positive evaluation and an immediate return to the court for Trevor Ariza.

GO LAKERS!

Vman:" Trevor Day? Let's go left foot clap clap clap clap
Let's go left foot clap clap clap clap or is it the right one?"

Lol! Very Good!

By the way, I meant "That thousand yard STARE many Nouguts had (including Iverson) at the beginning of Game Two said volumes."

GO LAKERS!

"Jackson also said that he believes Ariza will be able to reintegrate himself quickly into the Lakers lineup once is cleared to play."

Today is a big day. My guess is Trev's gonna be healed up and ready to go after today. It's been 14 weeks now, so the bone should be totally healed, and he'll be on the court for practice Sunday. First or second off the bench Monday with about 15 to 20 minutes of playing time and at least one dunk over Marcus Camby or Nene.

The penetration shall cease. We win now. We destroy later.
