Live from Staples- Lakers vs. Nuggets: Game 1

April 20, 2008 | 12:08 pm

It's not just live blog action, it's playoff live blog action!  Fortunately, just like the Lakers, we've been working under near-playoff conditions for the last month, and should be good to go.

Camby, Iverson, Melo, Carter, Martin start for Denver.  Pau, Vlad, Kobe, Fish, and LO for LA.

BK with the first.

FIRST QUARTER:

We start with some honest, playoff style man hugging at center court before the tip.  Camby wins the tip for Denver, AI takes it up with Kobe on him.  That's one matchup to watch, the other being Vlad Rad on Melo.

10:54- Lakers get on the board, as Vlad Rad gets inside, accepts a feed from Gasol, and lays the ball in.  On the other end, Melo comes back and hits the jumper over Vlad.

10:07- Lakers up 7-4, after a scoreless first minute.  I already feel like I'm going to leave this series with a serious case of carpel tunnel syndrome.

9:52- Vlad Rad picks up his second four, barely two minutes into the game.  Looking at the replay, it looked like Vlad went through Iverson, but that AI looked to sell the play, too.  Not sure why Vladdy didn't just go around him, though.  Either way, it's two on Vlad and Luke is in for him.

8:00- The Lakers have been exploiting the matchup of Iverson on Walton, going to Luke down low the instant the ball crosses the three point line.  They got one bucket out of it, an open look for Fish, and then another easy dunk from Gasol, all based on Denver having to overcompensate for it.  Finally, George Karl gets Kleiza into the game, for Carter.  That cleans up that matchup.

7:10- Kobe passes up the open three, and the Lakers end up with the 24 second violation out of it.  Don't see that happen all that much.  Lakers up 11-7.

5:47- Two nice plays in a row from Walton, the first penetrating and feeding to a wide open Odom, who went down the lane for a big dunk, then coming off the screen, he took the pass from Kobe, had an open mid range jumper, but gave it up to Gasol in the post for an easier look.  Four quick points for LA.  On the other end, the Lakers are showing some help on Anthony, shading the double towards him.  Last time down, it was Gasol flashing, coming off Camby, who it's relatively safe to leave with a shot opportunity.  Certainly better than Melo.

Timeout on the floor, Lakers up 15-9, and doing an outstanding job attacking the rim. Very few jumpers early.  Everything is being fed down low.  High percentage shots, and they also limit Denver's ability to run out.  Solid, aggressive play, but also very smart.

2:47- Timeout, Lakers, with Camby going to the line.  Overall, as good a start for LAL as they could hope for.  Up 23-13, doing a great job of getting the ball inside, and controlling the pace.  Even when they are shooting from the outside, as they did on the last possession, it's off a post (and in this case, a repost), forcing the Nuggets to protect the lane.  Harder to run the break with four guys standing under the basket.

Farmar in off the TO.

2:26- Melo to the line, and fans start a "DUI" chant.  They're in playoff form!

1:15- Nuggets go zone, and the Lakers respond by getting the ball into the high post with Gasol, who feeds LO, who misses the layup.  No points, but it's encouraging to see the first thing they do against a zone is to go into the interior of it.

:30- Kobe takes a three early in the clock with no ball movement, and the Nuggets grab the board and end up with an Iverson putback on the other end.  Next trip, Farmar misses a triple, and Walton is slow getting back on Melo from the other side, and the Nuggets get another easy bucket.  Eight point lead down to four in a heartbeat.

END OF THE FIRST:

Bit of a breakdown in discipline over the last minute of play (6-0 run to close things out for Denver), but overall, it was a strong quarter for the Lakers, who finish the first 12 up 26-22.  The offense, at least for 11 minutes, worked from the inside out, with great effectiveness.  That, in part, helped turn Denver into a halfcourt team, where they're not nearly as effective.  Three more of those, and the Lakers will be fine.

AK with the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

11:40 - J.R. Smith absorbs some contact from Sasha whil taking it to the hole for a sunken layup.  Three point opportunity for Denver goes down as George Karl would have drawn it up.  The Laker lead's down to a scant point.

10:36 - Ronny Turiaf interferes with an exchange between Camby and AI, shuttles the swiped rock to Farmar, then recieves a feed en route to picking up a foul on Smith during a layup attempt.  The ball doesn't go down, but the pair of freebies offered as compensation do.

9:37 - Kobe checks in for Vlad Rad to play a little SF after the latter picks up his third foul.  To say the least, not the most productive of days thus far for Vlad.  A trio of fouls against a quartet of minutes.  Yikes.  Radmanovic looks seriously unhappy as he takes a seat on the pine.

8:47 - Kobe gets caught in centerfield mode, which ends up leaving Kleiza way too wide open for the three ball.  Not a guy you want to give clean looks.  He's not a huge name, but very capable of racking some points in big bunches.

Phil takes a timeout as things have gone rather dry for his Laker squad.  Denver's on a 14-4 run with barely three minutes expired in the quarter and have upped their shooting percentage by 6%.

8:00 - Nice recovery by Pau by on a shaky entry pass from Kobe.  He manages to control it well enough for a shuttle Sasha's way.  The Slovenian's good from behind the arc.

7:16 - A reach foul by Kobe doesn't do enough to prevent Smith creating another and one opportunity for himself.

5:30 -  Some terrific inside-out ball movement sets up Walton for both a successful three, but also a "good shot."  There's often a difference.

5:01 Little to any challenge from Kobe during Anthony Carter's layup, right on the heels of Pau offering fairly amall resistance to a drive by K-Mart.  The Lakers' success (or effort, in some cases) in stopping the ball right now is next to nil.  If a serious sea change doesn't go down ASAP, there could be a fairly substantial Nugget lead staring them in the face during the halftime break.

3:50 - Great arching pass from Fish hits LO in stride as he streaks towards the basket.  A couple of dribbles and an emphatic one handed dunk work converge to help bring the panicked crowd a little more back into the proceedings.

2:51 - Some fairly incidental contact by Kobe against AI leads to a third foul against The Mamba.  As a writer next to me notes, "That's an All-Star call."  I respond, "But Kobe's also an All-Star, so shouldn't the two cancel each other out?"  Apparently not.  Bad call.

43.5 - Spectacular touch pass from LO under the rack sets up Gasol for among the easiest layups he'll see this series.  Credit Kobe for the good feed to help up Lamar's.  What have we learned from this little sequence?  KEEP MOVING THE BALL INSIDE, KIDS!

22.1 - LO goes up for the one handed snag of Sasha's errant downtown attempt, then puts the ball on the floor towards the bucket for a layup and his 9th point.  With that number matching his rebound tally (along with three assists), Odom's come on quite strong for the half.   Dude's been everywhere and anywhere on the court.

The half ends with Sasha making a terrific block on Kleiza's buzzer beating three ball attempt, helping preserve a two point Lakers lead going into the half.  The Lakers did a nice job recovring after seeing their lead fall in quick fashion as the frame kicked off.  Too much of that dry period was spent launching long shots, failing to move the rock inside and REALLY failing to stop the ball.  It also doesn't help that Kobe's half has been fairly non-descript and ineffective.  But that the Purple and Gold are up by a duece having gotten so little from Kobe should serve as a sign of hope.  If nothing else, it reminds us that he's not doing it all by himself.  We'll see what adjustments go down in the third with BK at the helm.

THIRD QUARTER:

11:14- Melo picks up his third foul, on the offensive end, on LO.  Could be important if they can squeeze out one more.

11:00- Another Kobe jumper oer Martin, and again he misses.  Unfortunately, he gets caught in no mans land on the way back, and the Nuggets get an easy layup out of it.  He redeems himself on the next trip, stepping into the passing lane and going the other way for the layup attempt-

-he's hacked by Carter going up, then shoved under the hoop.  Refs t him up, as they should.  Timeout on the floor from George Karl, who has seen teh Lakers run out to a seven point lead to start the half.

The Lakers have started the half out strong, and recognize the mismatch inside that always results when Carter and Iverson are on the floor together.  With Martin on Kobe, that leaves one of the littles to pick up Vlad.  While Raddy isn't exactly a post up force, it allows an easy entry for LAL.  They can't go that well often enough.  Once the ball is inside, Denver has been forced to scramble.

9:14- Rad gets fouled own low.  Same matchup, same good result, so coming off the inbound, the Nuggets go zone.  Hopefully the Lakers continue to work the ball until they get inside of it.

7:56- Kobe hits the shot in the right corner off the inbound, pushing the Lakers lead to 13, 73-60.  That's a 13-4 start to begin the third, and Karl takes another timeout.  Lakers are only 4-9 for the quarter, but they've managed to grab three offensive boards, helping them push the lead.  More importantly, the ball is getting inside, and both scoring and slowing down the Nuggets at the same time.  That Denver has started off 2-9 from the quarter helps, too.  But a lot of that comes from keeping them from running.

7:10- Not sure where the call was there, but Kobe is whistled for his fourth, on Anthony, sending Melo to the line.  He makes one of two, and PJ chooses to keep Kobe in the game.  Bit of a gamble at this point, but obviously PJ trusts him not to pick up his fifth.  He shifts over to Kleiza.

5:11- LAL 78, Den 66.

Sasha and Farmar in for Fish and Kobe.

By the way, Denver is just killing themselves from the line.  13-23?  If half of those go in, this is a different game.

3:05- Good patience from the Lakers, who don't settle for the perimeter shot, instead working the ball around against a loose Denver zone until Vlad finds space underneath, and hits a cutting Gasol on the other side for the dunk. Great work from the Lakers.  Gasol now has 32/10/5.

1:00- After a terrible, foul ridden first half, Vlad has done a nice job in the quarter- not necessarily shooting (he's make one- wait, now two threes- but more from a distribution standpoint.  He's found himself in territory he doesn't usually go, down low, and has made some great extra passes to give the Lakers easy baskets.  Good work from Vladdy.

END OF THE THIRD:

Farmar hits the triple at the buzzer to put the Lakers up by 19. Outstanding Q3 for LAL.  They lay down the hammer on the Nuggets, dropping the ball down low over and over, mixing in with a little bit of perimeter game. 39-22 in the quarter.  Gasol was absolutely huge, going for 16 points, and Vlad chipped in with six.  Kobe found a bit of a goove, too, with 10 points on 3-6 from the line, and more importantly, 4-4 from the line (he didn't shoot an FT in the first half).

Barring something unusual, the Lakers look good for Q4.  But if something unusual does happen, blame AK.

FOURTH QUARTER

11:24 - Smith gets called for a flagrant after basically pulling a WWF move while trying to "make a play for the ball."  Thankfully, cooler heads prevail, Smith actually apologizes to Luke, and nothing bad comes of it.  Yet, if nothing else.

10:46 - Kleiza blows past Sasha, then manages to navigate around Walton's raised arms in the paint to rack the layup.  For all the AI/Melo talk, Kleiza's been the one absolutely killing the Lakers tonight.  9-12 from the floor and hopefully not counting.

10:14 - A very quick fourteen footer off little to any ball movement fails to drop for Kobe.  On the next possession, he misses a chippie after spending the entire possession iso'ed and dribbling against Smith and not ever looking in any teammates' direction.  At 5-20 from the field, it's been one of the worst playoff games I can recall Kobe playing in a while.  He's both off with his touch and seemingly trying to shoot the Lakers back into a game where they're already ahead.

7:03 - After slicing his way to the rack on the heels of a three ball, Kobe picks up his fifth foul for some baseline contact on AI.  That brings LO back into the game, with a backcourt of Farmar and Sasha.

6:20 - During the timeout, LO works out and stretches his knee.  It looked like he maybe hyperextended it or something during the previous possession.  Hopefully, it's nothing serious.  We'll try to find out later, but it's something to keep an eye on.

5:29 - Back in the game and back at the line.  Kobe wins a pair at the stripe courtesy of a foul by Smith (who checked himself with about a split second's worth of good grace befire his over the top reaction might have earned him a T from Joey Crawford).  Both go down.

4:30 - Kobe's at the line agains thanks to Smith, but not before picking up a double T with K-Mart.  I'm not positive why the technicals were called, but I'm guessing it had to do with some talking after Martin got away with some contact against Kobe that could have honestly gone either whistled or with the no call.  Kobe fired a bricked jumper soon afterwards and likely wasn't happy.

2:58 - I can't say I'm pleased with the result, but Melo knifing through 3 or 4 Laker defenders and Englishing the ball into the bucket.

2:10 - AI gets a pair of quick T's and an early shower.  Remember what I said about this team being a touch on the combustable side?  Kind of what I was talking about.

53.7 - I can see why none of the Nuggets managed to recover and challenge that alley oop from Luke to LO.  I couldn't see where the heck it was even heading for a few seconds.  It looked like Walton threw it up to nobody in particular.

the clock winds on a 128-114 win over the Nuggets.  Much to be happy about.  Aside from the outcome itself, fans should be very pleased that the Lakers managed to retain possession of this game during  among the worst playoff performances of Kobe's career.  Yeah, he got 32, but those points required 26 attempts, many of which were terrible shots.  Throw in one assist on a night where his teammates were hitting shots, and it's clear Kobe didn't spend enough time looking for the supporting cast.  Nonetheless, they provided support and plenty.  Pau Gasol ended up playoff win draught in ginormous fashion, putting up a 35/16/8 tally to go along with a trio of blocks.  LO was good for 17/14/6 and Luke Walton added 16 off the bench.  The best news?  You can figure Kobe ain't having too many more games like this one, so there could be even better sailing on the horizon.  More to come later.  Thanks for dropping by.

A A Los,

LOVED your post..Word to Motha!

This is team game..Nuff said!

Dude, I know your name is Angry_Laker, but it wouldn't hurt you to calm down a bit.

Tsphere | April 20, 2008 at 03:20 PM

nice post.

Flip floppin' ass bloggers on here..
CRAZY and you call yourselves Laker fans....FICKLE phukkers!

Anyone watch the post game show on ABC7 where Michael Cooper mentioned that Dirk should have pimp slapped David West with the back of his hand? LOL

There's nothing wrong with saying Kobe had a bad shooting day. He won't be ice cold the whole series.

I for one have no issue with DUI chants.

This is sports and you're supposed to give opposing players a hard time. JVG was saying something like Melo said he was sorry so it should be all fine and dandy now.

Words don't matter. Actions do. Until Melo proves through his actions that he's a responsible person, I'll remember he got a DUI. If he had a decently high BAC (like not just the silly .08 limit for super lightweights, but more like the .20 absolute limit recommended by medical professionals), he could have been seriously putting people and his own life in danger. If he's given a hard time about it do you think he's more or less likely to repeat his behavior?

Are we trying not to hurt his feelings now? He screwed up badly and should be taken to task for it. And this is sports where you're supposed to give the opposing team a hard time.

It's not like his mother was killed by a drunk driver. Referencing that would be cold and inhuman. Giving Melo a hard time about a conscious decision in which he could have killed people doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Hugo Boss,

"--DUI chants, not cool"

I totally agree with you. Everytime they cheer DUI, the Lakers owner say "ouch not me". Perhaps, one cheer is enough to elicit laughter but to the again and again, that childish! The same way with the taunting on this blog because of the bus mechanical problem on the way to Staples, that's very inhospitable and mean to put it in print, mocking the visitors who have been inconvenient in your town.

Gasol + Bynum = 10 years of frontline dominance

Faith -- wouldn't that mean guys like Turiaf and Mbenga are, like, twice as hot as Pau? No?

E

I'm very, very happy for Pau...

All those years with Memphis... you never really saw him complaining (at least not in public). He just took to the court and did his best in each game... learning the differences between the NBA and Euro b-ball.

Now he's finally broken his "never-won-a-playoff-game" curse... and he did so with style.

On another thread I made a "just-for-fun" prediction of a 4-game sweep, with Pau having the performance of his career in game 2. If that holds true, and he does even better in game 2 than he did in game 1.... yoohooooo!!!

¡Enhorabuena, Pau! ¡Sigue así!

Cheers from Spain,
- David

Amazing to see all the negativity geared at Kobe. He didn't win the MVP because he dominated every game. He had bad games. I wonder if these are true fans or closet fans of other teams blogging on this website just to be controversial. Kobe has bad games every once in a while, this is a given, but so do all the Lakers, Gasol and Odom included. Denver will make adjustments and Pau will not get off, but guarantee you Kobe will.

As for the people criticizing Kobe for talking smack. Why shouldn't he? Sometimes it's an effective strategy for getting your opponent to play sloppy. Jordan did it all the time? How many NBA rings have you guys won. And I'm sure Kobe couldn't begin to have a mastery of how to perform your occupations by merely observing you.

Go Lakers!!!!

Edwin(and all others who need to read this...[laughter]),
do you not realize that this is ritualized WAR?

what would be wrong is to break the bus on purpose or poison a cheezburger, laughing about the bus dying on it's own(an act of God) when no one was injured is VERY appropro. likewise, a DUI where no one was hurt, but when it was a terrible flaw in judgement, especially considering it was right before the playoffs is also fair play gor smack talk. it's a heat and staying in the kitchen kind of situation. it's the same fair play as waving one's arms and yelling to try and distract a freethrow shooter. it's part of homecourt advantage.

DUI was well deserved and I applaud the Fans for doing it.

Melo could have killed someone. He needs help.

If this helps him. great.

If he is embarrassed, great.

It may be the life of him and somebody else you save.

Drunks don't think they have a problem. If this makes him think, then good.

Fans were just having fun, I'm all for F.A.D.D

Fans - Against - Drunk - Driving

Whew-whee...Just as Phil mapped out in the El Segundo bunker. I think not. Well, maybe the high Pau offensive exposure which draws out Lamar was in the master plan...glad at least those two are using "ball-synch-think". Luke's output was a somewhat pleasant surprise...maybe he's telepathetic...his passes usually are.

Old Kobe...vs. New Kobe...Good Twin Kobe...vs. Evil Twin Kobe.

I don't mind Mamba having an off shooting day due to attracting various annoying high-altitude tatsy flies...but the lip service...trash talk...serving up a "T"...sloppy defense...we just don't need it. Uhmm, KB24...The youngsters are watching and when viewing the films will think this is acceptable playoff behavior. One flippin assist.

You can sure tell...

1) The regular seasons over and they've reset his Techometer.

2) Obviously the MVP Polls are closed. Ughh...the look...the swagger...the fouls...the whining.

Too bad Chris Paul didn't get the memo and still busted his gut yesterday to get NO's first win...maybe he can demand a recount. I'll take form and focus over flippant flash and fashion any day.

I Still like the "good twin" Kobe that shows up more frequently these days but after twelve years in the league I just wish he'd grow up and start behaving like a veteran Laker future HOF'er keeping his head and his teammates in the game.

'Nuff said...one win won.

What a game, happy for Pau finally getting a win in the playoffs.
Denver only stayed in the game because of fouls. Lakers need to stop those fast breaks and they will annihilate them. Funny thing is Kobe being off and they still lost by 14, what happens when Kobe plays like KOBE THE MVP?
Lakeshow was looking nice today though! Keep it going Lakers!

Today was a reminder of how lucky the Lakers are to have been given the gift of Pau.That poor guy was rotting away in Memphis. It's nice to see him have the opportunity to show everybody how good he is.

Kwame-6/6/1 52-41
G1vs.PX-4/7/1 2-6 LOSS
Pau-19/8/4 59-79
G1vs.DEN 36/16/8 14-20 WIN

Just a reminder to the Lakers circa 2007-08, the playoff record of the Lakers against Denver as reported by Associated Press:

"The teams are meeting in the playoffs for the first time since Los Angeles swept Denver 3-0 in the first round 21 years ago. The Lakers also eliminated the Nuggets 2-1 in a Western Conference mini-series in 1979 and 4-1 in the conference finals in 1985."

Of course, we can't compare the past from the present because the players are different. Based on Laker traditions, these are the playoffs, we lived, breathed and waited for these moments, I hope they won't spoil it and put up another notch in their game as the first blood was shed today. Don't ever give the Nuggets a chance to recover or adjust, Vlad and Walton got a good game but their defenses are still missing. Playoff games are about adjustments because it's a face off against one team, individual players have to improve in every game while coaches have to tinker their strategies as well.

Maixmus! Maximus! Maximus!

What was going on today? Kobe's worst game of the year on the same day as Walton's best game of the year? Weird.

The interesting thing about the "DUI" chant? It didn't really spark Anthony into doing anything. If some other group of fans did something similar to Kobe, he would try to drop 60 on that team. Anthony always has kind of a goofy look on his face, he doesn't seem to play with a lot of fire.

As long as we keep working the ball around on offense, Denver can't win. We can score consistently in the half-court sets and when we do that, they can't run out.

There's a lot to be happy about today. Kobe may not have a game this bad the rest of his life, both Kleiza and Smith has pretty big games and we still won by 14.

Herb, the game is basketball, which is, as i have already pointed out, ritual warfare.the game is not "tea time and cupcakes".

the "T" was a ridiculous call, and as pointed out, Kobe didn't have a BAD game, he had a bad SHOOTING game. it happens. basketball is, like baseball, a game of averages. a great shooter only shoots 50%. if one is to have a string of makes, there will be a string of misses...

please go follow CP3, if he's more your style. i'd LOVE to have CP3 AND Kobe, but i'm very happy with Kobe if i can only have one. add to that that we WON with a bad shooting game by Kobe and i have plenty to be enthusiastic about. if you are a Laker fan, i would think you have plenty to be enthusiastic about, too.

man,

I know what you're saying, it's just part of fun, fun, fun. If it happens to our team when they are on the road, also get into rage. Taunting and mocking as I have mentioned earlier due to unfortunate circumstances are not part of the game, we didn't like it also when the Celtics were rude and unkind to us in 80's, however in the end, this is still Sports, there is nothing wrong in advocating professionalism and sportsmanship conduct.

People have differences of opinions as you can see in this blog especially in a diversified place like the Lakerville. LA fans are no purely homers, they call it what they see and comment what they feel so I hope you guys there don't get upset if we disagree on some of our posts, in the end we all agree that the - Lakers are on the way to Championship.

Edwin,
there's no crime in faulting on the side of fair play.

it's all rhetoric here. the games are played there....[laughter again]

Diesel100,

you wrote:

Kobe is really a prima donna. I am not thrilled with his antics today and with Gasol almost getting a triple double, why is Kobe the interviewee?

Kobe "went off" in the 4th as Tafoya claimed? Really? He nearly shot the Nuggets back into the game those 18 points were primarily free throws. He barely shot 35%. Bad job. And trash talking is fine, but don't let it affect your teammates. So let's not all assume it's Jordan who was causing the trouble. Maybe he told Kobe to stop jacking up shot and pass.

Remember this was the guy that held us hostage a few years ago with the free agency and almost reipped this team up last summer with the trade me nonsense. I could never imagine dealing with that ego on a personal or professional level. Great interview to Kobe. Way to shout out for your teammates.

my response:

While you're talking about Kobe holding the team hostage,
don't forget to talk about Shaq *trying* to hold the team
hostage or Mitch getting Smush & Kwame. yes, Kobe
has a large ego. I think every "superstar" in the NBA sans
Tim Duncan do.

re: Trash talking. Did you play a lot of sports? it's a fairly
common occurrence. ref. World Cup soccer, Zidane &
Mazzeri . The most famous headbutt in recent
history.

re: the 4th quarter. 18 pts in a quarter is a good thing.
Getting to the free throw line is a GREAT thing because
the other team is racking up fouls. J.R. Smith fouled out
because of Kobe.

Herb Stempel 'Mr 1 assist'

Did you know if a player who receives that ball does not score, the passer does not get an assist.

I just thought I would inform you since you have obviously did not watch the game.

Kobe passed ball several time to open teamates and they missed.

I suppose those 2 blocked shots were Kobe slacking on his defense. Stop the hate and watch the game. He had a off night shooting the ball and was in foul trouble..

Peace!!

Angry_Laker

All the Kobe bashing is odd. Yes, he took some "bad shots". One reason people consider Kobe a superstar is that he often makes "bad shots". If he doesn't take, and often make those kinds of shots, there would be far fewer double teams and far fewer open teammates.

He did take a few more bad shots that usual. I put it down to a high level of nervous energy. It's the first time "his" team is expected to do anything in the playoffs. He'll calm down now. Good thing that he could get that game out of system without the team falling into a funk.

I want a forty point lead!

Defense!

Talk about a killer instinct!

Kobe did everthing he should have done in this game. He came through in key moments in the end and he also let Kenyon Martin know he 's wasn't going to get away with talking smack in the Laker's house and Kobe didn't take any of his Sh#t. The best in the game "Bird and Jordan" have always let it be known that they weren't taking any stuff in the playoffs and talked with the best of them. Oh! that's right, some of you probably follow the NBA back then. The league is much softer now days.

Was it just me, or did it seem that Kobe and even Turiaf were a little slow in the first half... on offence (settling for jumpers), defence (several times kobester got beat) and in transition (he never really sprinted until he elbowed a defender trying to hold him up....

I forgot Iverson has become one of the foremost floppers in the league that nobody talks about. Touch him and he flies 20 feet into the courtside seats

Yes and many times you don't even have to touch him!

Melo at the line to "DUI" chants. Ouch. Although, as the saying goes, don't do the crime if you can't do the time. But still, not the classiest of acts.

Remember how Denver fans treated Kobe after his being accused of rape. Not very classy either. I remind all that Kobe was accused but not convicted.

I totally agree, but that doesn't mean Staples fans have to stoop to their level. If Laker fans are better than that, they should show it, not just claim it. You know what I mean?

AK

passionate,
Vlad doesnt shoot the 3 well?

What are you smokin?

Vlad has been scorchin from 3 lately...

Vlad's not going anywhere more than likely

Posted by: Korey | April 20, 2008 at 12:32 PM

When can argue or if Vladimir shoots the 3 ball consistently enough to warrant his being a starter; however, you can not deny the fact that he does anything else basketball related on either end of the court.
And that is why I would trade him and keep Luke.

Posted by: passionate Lakers fan | April 20, 2008 at 12:43 PM

I wanna jump in on this. Vlade does more that just shoot 3's. He rebounds and taps balls out for team mates to rebound. He blocks shots, passes and steals balls on inbound plays and converts for 3's. He drives and dives for dunks and is improving his post up game. As I have said before with Kareems help he can improve that aspect of his game tremendously. He plays better defense than before and can still improve.
Try to watch the other aspects of his game before you write him off.

The inconsistent play of the regular season is creeping into this game.
A double digit lead has turned into being down by 4.
The problem?
Defense.
I got killed on this blog for stating not being a defensive team during the regular seson will be a problem in the play-offs.
This is not the regular season where you can begin good play with a winning streak after a short losing streak.
A short losing streak and you go home.
I said it during the regular season and I will say it again:
DEFENSE!

No not bad D even though it could be better but losey 3 point shooting again. Too many missed 3's let the Nuggets back into the game. got away from pounding the ball inside which kept the Nugs from running.

So much for the mvp. Nice Chris Webber 17 foot jump shots Kobe. The Lakers will lose this game. They like to make everything difficult similar to when Kobe raped a girl and blew the lakers chance against Detroit.

You sound and smell like a troll. Did you misspell your name Fire 32?

first of all, please don't call me an asshole -- i didn't say anything that merits name calling.

second of all, i ain't really attacking kobe -- i am one of his diehard fans who always defends him.

that said, i'm just saying -- when the shot is not there and you were successful in penetrating -- don't let the ego stop u from doing what is successful just to prove that you got a jumper -- keep penetrating -- that's what i would do if i could (pun intended)
