Kobedelic
Similar to the wild colors enjoyed by those acid dropping hippies in 1967, last night's 122-107 win over the Nuggets featured Kobe Bryant visuals that felt like they couldn't possibly be real. The second game in this series kicked off with 24 in immediate attack mode, the aggressiveness coming in part to offset his teammates' collective inability to knock down shots. Bryant was also looking to offset the continual trash talking on the part of his opponents, who seem incapable of learning they'd be better off shutting their yaps. Kobe notched 20 first quarter points on 8-10 shooting, the foundation of a half that would wrap up at 25 and come within a eyelash of hitting a franchise record.
From there, Kobe did more than just light up the scoreboard, taking on the role of facilitator in brilliant fashion. His second half included eight assists, with common beneficiaries being Pau Gasol and a very effective Luke Walton. Taking a cue from their leader, the Lakers moved the ball at a dizzying pace, accumulating enough assists (33) that they could have loaned a few to Denver (who certainly could have used them). From there, it was a fourth quarter feeding frenzy. 19 points off double crossover drives and three pointers that appeared to measure about 40 feet. Kobe then put away his six shooters, ironically marking a time when Denver was the team appearing short on bullets for the box score. The MVP voting is already over and done, but last night's game did serve to defend those marking their "X" beside Kobe' moniker. Whether you're talking domination, versatility or putting a stamp on his own team, it was an evening clearly owned by The Mamba.
The Rocky Mountain heights serving as a Game 3 venue often lead to troubles catching ones breath, which could require some adjustments by the Lakers (which seems to be their forte as it is). Of course, unless there's an accompanying mental adjustment by Denver, the Lakers could play while clinically diagnosed with Hypoxia and it really wouldn't make a difference. In any event, the change in climate hopefully won't worsen Ronny Turiaf's bad throat.
One L.A. scribe thinks the Lakers' good fortunes are equally fruitful for the Dodgers.
Anthony Carter's been bumped from Denver's starting lineup, but if his background is any indicator, he'll continue to persevere.

Mamba24,
Damn, how'd you know I wrote that "practice" speech for AI? The only thing is this: I told him to repeat the word "practice" four times, not FOURTEEN times. Come on, AI. Work with me.
Great game last night. I know this will ruffle a few feathers, but I've been saying it for the last three years: Kobe is better than Jordan. Every time Kobe shoots the ball, I'm pretty sure it's going through the hoop. His jumpshot is just textbook perfection. He's got the finesse, he's got the finish-at-the-hoop mentality, he's got a sick left hand, he's got a deadly jumpshot (from anywhere on the court), he's got the killer mentality... and Kobe's working his way toward 4 more rings in the next 5 seasons.

Good Morning Charles--Good Morning Everyone....
Another win, another positive response to a Denver run, hope that is a pattern we continue to see in the series....
It was also good to see the team play reasonably well without Lamar for most of the game---in this series,(as well as most games) Lamar has such a positve effect on our overall play and of course creates match up problems for the other team. Just shows you how deep we are (not to mention Ronny's being MIA as well) ..
Positives For Puke: his contributions are becoming very consistent again, had some timely shots, hit a couple threes, shot well from the free throw line--only had a few miscues that were a non factor etc.--only 5 years left on his contract...
Mbenga continues to impress--hopefully we can keep him--he may indeed be a project that comes to fruition...
Wish Coby Carl would have scored...
I really liked the other Kobe's post game interview---I thought that was one of his best ever---really showing a lot of mature insight--great answers----and the Kenny Smith video was gut bustin'--great to see Kobe having fun with that and seeing the overall relaxation and enjpyment of his present situation is pretty cool indeed--
Kobe Bryant (ever heard of him?) playing at ledgendary status--I quite enjoy his presence on the Lakers (Holy Understatement Bat Breath)....
Don't know if we can sweep these tattooed, corn rowed headbanded ugly guys or not, but think we should get at least one in Denver (knock on wood).....
AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!

Luke needs to stay on the bench (and I love the guy). His production there speaks for itself. He will get the minutes he needs. This will benefit us in many ways:
Strong passing skills, ability (not always willing though) to go to the hole and shoot. Floor leadership for the young guys. Farmar works well with Luke. This may help Jordan out of his mini slump as it has been referred as. The IQ of this duo is way HIGH and the passing skills of both will shine.
As badly as Kobe shredded them last night I think Denver will go back to doubling Kobe next game so the rest of the team had better come with game, Kobe will get more assists on Saturday and odd on less points. I think Denver will be more willing to take chances with the rest of the team stepping up in the altitude games.
The other option is they spend the next 3 days crying and are all dehydrated and wither in the 1st half and we sweep. Watching Karls post game, I say they are dehydrated :)
Look for needle track on AI's arms from the IV fluids they will need to pump into him. Also keep an eye on his body guard when Kobe gets close to him. Carmelo will stop by the bar for a few drinks and then slip out back for a smoke behind the dumpster before the game. (I am going on too much here)

The Farm doesn't look like he's been lookin' to pass lately.
There's been quite a few sequences with Sasha and Kobe open on the wings with their hands out for a pass that doesn't come. At least it looks that way on the DVR, maybe it's wrong.
Maybe it's pressing for minutes, but with nothing much to nit pick, time to fine tune.
Posted by: Vman | April 24, 2008 at 10:37 AM
Vman,
You are absolutely correct my friend. Farmar has done this on many occasions this season and seems to have tunnel vision when handling the ball. If he would survey the court he would see that another teammate would be open with a better shot such as Kobe and Sasha on a couple of possessions. What Farmar needs to understand is that being aggressive doesn't necessarily mean just looking to shoot, but finding mates with better looks or creating better looks for his mates. I saw a play last night where Farmar was dribbling at the top of the key and had Kobe on open the right side of the floor with virtually no one in front of him. The pass to the one who makes the pass for the assist is just as important because it's all about precision, execution and ball movement. The problem I see with Farmar is that the ball sometimes stops with him and he runs the shot clock down with overdribbling. Kobe is also guilty of this as well at times, but the difference is Kobe can create his own shot on the fly. I like Farmar, so I'll chalk it up to being young and inexperienced.

Ajax and Puddle - yes, I am one of those Puke now Luke folks. I own up.
But I have also been saying that PJ has been building their confidence strategically over last 2 weeks of reg. season for the playoff push. So, I would add that PJ's nurturing of the guys riding the pine or playing poorly is paying early dividends. Plus as BK pointed out above - there is no good Thug matchup for Luke which helps make him look good as well.

The Outlaw, Kobe actually has a pretty flat jumper.. that's why he is pretty inconsistent with it.. a lot depends on his legs.. when he is on, of course it looks smooth.
Even with that, Kobe can become a better shooter if he took in rhythm jumpers.. one dribble max. Less threes, also (he made them yesterday.. but, some of those are bad shots on most nights.)
But, Kobe's footwork is pretty amazing.. he really has no weakness as far as his arsenal goes. He can do just about anything. The key is always about choosing the high % ones. Even for Kobe there are good and bad choices.

I agree with keeping Luke in the 2nd unit. He's been playing good ball lately, and our 1st unit has three, if not four good scorers/distributors, so I think the best way to use Luke would be to have him and LO running the 2nd unit. The starters get a breather, and Luke does what he does best, make a couple baskets, snag a few rebounds, maybe dish out an assist here and there. Normally I wouldn't want this to happen, but something's going on with Farmar. I don't know what it is, but he's been mired in some kind of funk and isn't willing to snap out of it. Hopefully this playoff run will show him how important he is to the team.
Jamie Sweet,
Nice reference!

You know, Denver really isn't that bad. They can put up points. I think they need an inside presence on the offensive end and they'll be a top 5 team in the West. For example, imagine if Elton Brand moved to Denver...
AI
JR
Melo
Brand
Camby
That's a pretty potent lineup on both the offensive and defensive ends. But hey, I hope that never happens!!

Good to see people supporting Luke again. Caution: if he goes in another dry spell, we can't jump on him like he's a baby gazelle and we're starving lions. Everyone has droughts in their career. Except Kobe. But there's only one Kobe.
We basically won this game yesterday with 1 1/2 of our 4 star players. Kobe, of course, was great, Pau had an ok game, Lamar was terrible (which doesn't happen often anymore) and Bynum still sits. A note to the rest of the league: good luck if all 4 are on a roll together, whenever Bynum comes back. Chances are, not all 4 will have bad nights. That's good for us, bad for you. You've been warned.

Dynasty questions:
Well, here's my definition - and I was sure I would get called on the 4 dynasty thing -- hahahaha
Dynasties are defined by winning multiple rings --
1st. Mikan et al.
2nd. Magic et al.
3rd Kobe/Shaq
I can't in good consciousness include the one ring in '72 as a dynasty. I understand the team was dominant -- West/Chamberlain -- But is it really a DYNASTY?

Good Afternoon Everyone!
I feel wonderful that we've gone up 2-0 on _enver.
I feel even better that my unwavering faith in Luke and L.O. is paying off. When you have forwards who are able to pass like that, with Kobe smashing buckets, and Pau putting up those iceman-like finger rolls, and Sasha and D-fish smacking 3's, it's no wonder why we didn't ever get rid of them. I hope people realize how integral Luke is to our hopes of winning a title this year!

Kwame was a player of immense physical skills who was lazy, had a pouty attitude, was always thinking "me first" and repeatedly choked in the clutch.
Luke is a player with very limited physical skills but a workingman's ethic and positive attitude who always thinks "team first," and comes through in the clutch.

The Outlaw,
I for one, do agree with you. Although, this is the way I'm gonna phrase it:
The rate at which he's growing, both in his game and leadership, Kobe might very well turn out to be better than Jordan when it's all said and done.
As far as the positives of Kobe's game:
- Kobe has better range on his shots than Jordan; much much better (and more willing) 3-pt shooter than MJ ever was.
- Kobe is BOTH the scorer and the facilitator for his team whereas Jordan was a scorer first and then a facilitator coz Pippen was the main ball handler and facilitator for the Bulls.
- Kobe handles the ball a lot more than Jordan and is probably a better overall ball-handler than Jordan.
- Kobe is the main source of toughness/intimidation in his team (and he brings it every game) whereas Jordan had Pippen, Rodman, Bill Cartwright, et. all to help out in that department.
- Kobe is definitely playing in an era where he is going up against way bigger, stronger and more athletic defenders on him on a daily basis than Jordan had to deal with.
- Kobe has to take a bigger load on defense since he is the best defender in his team by a huge margin, whereas Jordan had some of the all time best defensive players with him in Rodman and Pippen to help out.
Things that Kobe can improve:
- Be a more efficient shooter. Jordan was phenomenal in that regard (shooting 50% as a guard). Kobe should focus more in an in-between game so that he's taking fewer 35 ft bombs (even if he makes quite a few of them). This will also help Kobe extend his career much longer (like MJ did with his patented turnaround fadeaway later in his career).
- Gamble less on defense. He cannot afford to roam as much as MJ did coz Kobe just doesn't have the same quality of defenders around him like MJ to cover up.
- His off-court leadership. Kobe has taken a huge leap on his on-court leadership but the next step in his maturation process should be his willingness to connect with his teammates a little bit more outside of basketball. It really does help with the overall team dynamic to see your best player reaching out to everyone at a personal level. Maybe he's already doing that.
THAT'S ABOUT IT!!!
I can't think of any other way Kobe can improve to stake his claim as one of the best there ever was (even better than Michael).
And I believe Kobe has what it takes to be the best and he's already there in more ways than one.
Go Lakers!! Go Kobe!!!

Since so many teams are zoning up against the Lakers over the past month, how come the guys still panic at first when they see it? Don't they realize that patience not practice makes perfect - at least against the zone.
I know PJ has tried to drill this into them over and over again. But it seems that they take a wild perimeter shot even if there are 12 seconds on the shot clock instead of using that time to try and break the zone.
They need to get out of panic mode especially Jordan, Fish and Vlad and be patient and do what PJ has taught them - work the ball around, use the shot clock.
I'd rather see them turn the ball over on a shot clock violation than throw up a wild three and give their opponents a fast break and an easy basket in transition.

>>>Lastly - didn't someone say that Walton in starting
>>>lineup was our best efficiency combo - stats were on
>>>82games? If so and he has finally found his game
>>>again - maybe PJ should think about starting him and
>>>Vlad off the bench? Thoughts?
That was me. Not only is Walton in the starting lineup the
Lakers most efficient lineup, it's the 2nd most efficient lineup
IN THE LEAGUE!!!
Here's the link:

OTOH, I think the other starters are better defenders so
they make up for Rad's defensive ineffectiveness a bit,
while Rad is the most consistent 3-point shooter of the
starters, so he keeps opposing teams from doubling Kobe
or Pau at the start.
And Luke really does work well with the bench mob, so I'm
just as happy with Rad starting as I would be with Luke
starting.
