Keeping with today's "Espanol" theme...
What's Spanish for "Kobe ain't looking to relocate anytime soon?"
While the events leading up to this sea change statement were anything but predictable, that Bryant now feels this way was about as easy to call as Denver eventually imploding during game 1. All kidding aside, where is Kobe gonna find as good or better a situation (and if this aspect is important to him, while making close to the same amount of loot)? Beyond that, Kobe does look happier than he's been in a long time. As well he should be. The season may have began looking like a Brothers Grimm story, but it's wrapping up as the biggest fairy tale this side of Snow White.
I'm running out to catch a movie with my lady (if anyone's curious about "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," I'll lend a review in a few hours), so I'll have more thoughts later. But in a nutshell, I'm happy for Laker fans, the Laker organization and Kobe himself. Bottom line, I want all three parties to be happy. It's looking like that could be case for quite some time.
AK

Any connections with the meeting of Jerry Buss and Kobe in Barcelona on the Gasol possible trade or the younger Gasol joining the Lakers in the future. Did Kobe ever talk to Gasol while in Barcelona? Just asking, nobody will ever admit the meeting because it's against the rules at that time.

Kobe said he 'accidentally' ran into Gasol at a health club.
What a coincidence?

AK/BK,
I think this is an honest answer to last summer as one
can give:
there were a lot of decisions that were made business-wise that I wasn't happy with. I took a lot of the blame for a lot of the stuff they were doing. It didn't sit right with me. It still doesn't sit right with me.
stuff they were doing = Smush Parker?
Go Lakers!

If Spain plays the US in the Olympics, and Kobe comes driving down the lane in a close game, does anyone else think Pau should just deck him?
Hehe, c'mon what's a little contact between friends, eh? That will give Pau a little bit of a chance to 'keep it gangstah'.

""This is my decision. It's independent of you. My mind is made up. It doesn't matter to me what you do in free agency because I do not want to pay [Shaq], period.'"
"Dr. Buss said that," Bryant told Smith. "And I haven't said anything for years because I've always felt like folks were just looking to create controversy. Now I know. I realize what extent [the Lakers] will go to, to cover themselves.""
was it ever revealed who the "Laker insider" was who blamed Kobe in the LA Times article?

Hobbitmage & F. Fatty,
I absolutely agree with your posts. At that time, I also read in the news that Kobe watched the soccer team F. C. Barcelona. What ever happened there made us a bunch of suckers here believing on whatever this Bucher of ESPN was saying. Hey, it's nice to be suckered on whatever transpired and thanks also to Mr. Jerry West, the arrangee and Mitch K., as the front man. Once a laker, always a laker.
People are saying no need of Bynum because Lakers are winning games without him, Once they lose, you will see the reverberations on the blog, we need Bynum. lol!

Kobe regrets going on the radio tour, demanding a trade and calling Dr. Buss an idiot.
Management regrets forcing Kobe to play alongside Smush and Kwame for three years of Kobe's prime, after promising him a contender.
All is forgiven by both parties. Dr, Buss and Kupchak have been redeemed. Kobe has been redeemed.
The team is finally winning. Kobe is happy. Management is happy. The fans are happy. Even evil David Stern is happy. The only people that are not happy is the national media, the LA Times writers, the Kobe hating sheep, and the Western Conference teams.
Now, let's move on and get started on the next LAKER DYNASTY.

Fairweather Fatty, AK/BK,
So what exactly is PJ saying by making that statement about AB? I mean seriously, why can't they just come out and say outright if he's out for the entire playoffs?!!! I know PJ said that AB is absolutely out during the first round, but now he makes a vague statement today to keep Lakers fans in flux?!! AK or BK mentioned that they saw AB shooting half courts shots today at practice, but was he working out on the court on his own? Did he spend most of his time on the treadmill? Did he have any one on one workouts on the court today? I know he's inactive for this series, but why haven't they ruled him completely out for the entire playoffs if PJ keeps making these types of statements?!!! Some answers please?!!!

It's a shame Kobe will never have the maturity of Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan. If he did, combined with his unmatched talent, there would simply be no limit, and he would be unquestionably the greatest athlete of our time. Instead, we constantly have to worry about "whether he is happy," and deal with his drama-queen tendencies, and wonder what is going on during ludicrous 5 for 20 performances like the better part of Sunday's game. Does that make us all enablers?
Posted by: jimjoyce | April 21, 2008 at 09:08 PM
I wasn't crazy about Kobe's remarks saying the Mitch had gone from F to A+. Does Kobe not realize that He is one of the reasons Mitch has had a challenging task in gathering a team together? The chase-off of Shaq? The Colorado debacle? Can Kobe admit that his grades haven't been that great over the past few years?

Fatty,
I saw where Phil said the chances of Andrew returning were “remote” but his comment struck me as more of an attempt to put aside for the moment any questions about when Drew would return or how the Lakers would handle his return rather than as an “update” on Drew’s health or status. I think Phil made the comments partly so he would not have to keep answering the questions over and over because it doesn’t matter right now and partly so the media, fans, and players would focus on the current team and series.
I don’t think anything has changed with respect to Drew’s return. I think the Lakers hope and think he will be back for the conference finals but nobody can say for sure. It just depends on whether Drew’s knee stabilizes enough for him to get medical clearance for physical contact in practice. Then he is on his way to coming back. You can’t blame the Lakers for wanting also to take the pressure off of Drew, who is hurting greatly by not being able to get out there and play and help his teammates win.
Anyway, that’s my take on the latest Drew-ain’t-coming-back bruha. I think he will be back late in the second round and start in the conference
Tom

Why is anyone critcizing Kobe over his remarks from today? He is saying he wants to stay and he has admitted he was wrong about the way he handled things. Why won't people take yes for an answer?
If he pours gasoline over himself and lights a match, will that clear the books with everyone?

Laker Tom,
I appreciate your take on the entire situation with AB. I'm really hoping that he returns for the second round because I'm with you in believing that he's the piece to put us over the top especially if we meet the Spurs or Suns in the WCF and or Boston or Detroit in the finals. It would be nice if we knew one way or the other if AB will be back at all in these playoffs. I do see how PJ can be deflecting attention away from AB as much as possible so there would be no distractions at this time and also protect AB from feeling any pressure to rush back until he's ready to contribute. I'm sure no one is as frustrated as AB because I know that he so badly wants to help his team finish on top. Go Lakers!!! Go Bynum!!!

"AK, Thanks for the Luke confidence update it's good to know that you do whatever it takes to keep us informed in regards to Luke. P.S Keep up the good work!"
No worries. And can I can offer a suggestion? If you're gonna try to mock me, you should at least do it in the actual thread where what you're talking about was discussed. Otherwise, there's no reference point for everyone else and you kinda sound... well... stupid.
Then again, if you had done it in that thread, everyone else would be able to easily see I was talking about Walton because another reader directly asked me about him. Which would make you kinda sound... well... stupid.
Just throwing out my two cents.
PS. Keep up the good work!

Posted by: pslakerfan | April 22, 2008 at 12:26 AM
Maybe Phil is saying exactly what he means.
Andrew's still not ready and considering how slow it's goin', the coach can't count on his being able to play championship level basketball this year. The questions about Andrew won't stop. He's the difference and everyone knows it.
At this point, I'm just happy they're not talking about exploratory surgery to find out why the knee hasn't
healed.
Posted by: Vman | April 22, 2008 at 12:34 AM
If I'm Phil Jackson I play Mbenga at the 11:00 minute mark for Gasol. And at the same time put Vujacic and make him guard IVERSON all in the first quarter. I would put Kobe on Carter. They may call a time out right away to figure things out and make adjustments. I just want to see what their game plan would be with them expecting Kobe to guard Iverson. Doing this will make them uncomfortable when Gasol comes back from the locker room at around the 9 minute mark. (This is just an opinion from my wild and crazy imagination). I feel that this may make the Nuggets feel heartbroken when they realize Gasol doesn't really have an injury. HAHAHA. What a crazy imagination I posses. But hey I'M JUST KIDDING.
Posted by: | April 22, 2008 at 12:44 AM
Oh and Phil knows that when we meet the Suns in the WCF we will need Bynum. We will need Bynum for the Jazz. These two teams will give us headaches. It will be easier to win with a Bynum. When we meet the Suns for the WCF if the Lakers want a Finals against the Celtics they will need Bynum. The Jazz series is gonna be tough without Bynum and against the Suns I don't know what will happen. Well maybe I do know.
Posted by: johnny | April 22, 2008 at 12:59 AM
Is anyone else worried that the Utah/Houston series may be going by too fast? I was hoping the Rockets would win so the series can be extended. The Lakers are hurt right now and need all the rest they can get. If Utah wins the series, which will likely be a sweep, the Lakers will be in a very physical battle pending the Lakers beat Denver. I'm honestly worried about Denver. They actually had a horrible game and could have won had they made freethrows and didn't make so many mental mistakes. I've seen Denver play all year in my newly expired league pass and they are scary. Lakers should remain focus and not pull a Detroit Game 1.

Good morning Laker family around the Globe,
It's only Tuesday morning and Sunday's game already seems like forever ago. How fortunate we are to wake up and feel confident about our chances, when other teams are already experiencing the agony of defeat.
Anything we will get from Bynum or Ariza will be a bonus. What's most important now is for the guys who've been getting it done to stay healthy.
I had a high school teacher who would ask every day, "Are you optimistic or pessimistic?" I can't remember why he asked the question, but today I'm certain about my answer: Optimistic.
Tomorrow: Game 2 in the Lakers journey to Destiny.

I would like to think the AB think is strategic. And, I know Tom thinks it is all about clearance and out of AB's hand. Perhaps these things are true.
My experience with doctors and watching sports has told me that the patient / player has some say. Kobe could have had surgery this season. He declined. My unfortunate point being, unless he's just following Coach's vagueness strategy - which I doubt - AB is putting the "I" before the 'Team." He does not want to come back until he's comfortable.
Tom, I believe Kobe would be fighting with his doctors at this point and saying - truthfully or not - "No doc I don't feel a thing," and "How about I play a little and see how it feels? My team needs me." Can you imagine Kobe sitting out a playoff series because he injured his knee months ago? I can't. AB has been spotted at shoot arounds!!Kobe would be out there even if he had to wear two braces on his knee!
GO LAKERS!!!!

jimjoyce,
You might want to drop MJ from the list of great athletes that behaved well and maturely.
You're talking about a guy in the mold of Kobe that:
1. Yelled at his teammates.
2. Punched Steve Kerr in practice.
3. Destroyed Kwame's psyche.
4. Gambled his way through the league.
5. Womanized and got others in trouble by doing so (i.e., didn't keep his womanizing out of his marriage and normal life).
It might be worth your time to dig a little deeper than the media stories that you're spoon fed. Otherwise, you come off sounding like a media parrot that thinks he's really well-informed.
Posted by: Benjamin | April 22, 2008 at 07:13 AM
Hmmm....
Has anyone noticed that Kupchak may have just pulled off the most improbable rebuilding project of all time in all of American professional sports?
If we win a Championship this year or next, he would have blown up an entire Championship roster and had the rebuilding complete within the same decade. Before this year, EVERYONE thought that was impossible.
Just wishful thinking...but what if we run off another two; this year and next? That would be five championships in 10 years. That's dynastic, for sure, except it would be with two completely different teams.
I'm with Kobe. Give Mitch an A+.
What if we win it all this year, then Andrew comes back all healthy next year?
Juggernaut, that's what.
