Good work with the opening act

April 11, 2008 |  8:13 am

Gasol_dunks_vs_clippers The Lakers weren't necessarily inspired in their 106-78 win over the Clippers Thursday night over the Clippers at Staples, but once they erased an early 11 point deficit, LAL controlled the pace and generally didn't have to work all that hard to dispose of the red, white, and blue.  It was a balanced effort offensively for the Lakers, generally the case when Luke Walton leads the squad in scoring (he had 18), who saw six guys hit double figures.  While only two were in the second unit, the reserves found a touch of redemption after failing to hold on to a big fourth quarter lead Sunday in Sacramento, forcing the starters to re-enter the game.  Thursday, the reserves took a 12 point lead heading into the final quarter and quickly pushed it out of reach, allowing the starters to kick it on the pine. That extra rest could come in handy during Friday night's marquee matchup against the Western Conference leading Hornets (7:30, FSN).

The notebook news centered around Andrew Bynum, who, as you know by now, was not cleared to play after a visit to one of those fancy New York MD's.  Dr. David Altcheck said Bynum isn't ready for contact- though it shouldn't be seen as a setback- and the Lakers aren't making any projections on his return.

Trevor Ariza feels better, and will be getting some diagnostic work done today.

Tonight's game is seen by many as perhaps the last big match in the MVP battle between CP3 and 24.  If Allen Iverson had a vote, he'd take Paul.  Those PGs stick together.  Iverson, though, is on the wrong side of Vegas.  That's just not where you want to be!

The Warriors couldn't beat Denver at home, and now are likely out of the playoffs.  Not surprisingly, Don Nelson would love to see some adjustments made in the playoff setup.

OJ Mayo is turning pro.  Big shock there.

Memphis likes that their replacement Gasol.

More news and notes from yesterday's game.

There is nonsense and common sense. There are fools and d@mn fools.
Well you would have to be a d@mn fool not to pay attention when today’s honoree
post his common sense opinions. Some people aren’t impressed with an answer
unless it has a lot of graphs, efficiency analysis & spread sheets, but sometimes
simple common sense is all that is needed to come up with a solution. Do you
realize that some fool had an efficiency chart that showed that Smush Parker was
more efficient than Kobe Bryant! Our honoree today Twoody is an advocate of not
overanalyzing a problem but just using your God given common sense to come up
with a solution. And believe it or not more times than not his common sense answer
to a problem will beat The Big Media guys with their graphs & efficiency projections
and all the other nonsense. Twoody is not on the Blog every day and when he does
post its not a long manifesto but short and to the point. These little pearls of wisdom
as I call them should be treasured when they are posted, because as I said he does
not post that often, but when he does is usually right. Twoody is a man of dignity
& integrity who I would be proud to go to the mat for any time. He is one of as I
call them elders of the Blog. Elders are the those who paved the way for the
fabulous Blog we have today. They did the work so we could blog on cruise control.
To quote an old commercial, they gained their reputation the old fashion way,
THEY EARNED IT! Thank you Twoody, RDlee Weaveman Edwin JJ, LakerTom,
Fatty, CBuck and all the other elders for your efforts At times I know it may appear as
if us young –uns don’t appreciate your efforts but believe me we do. TWoody I
apologize, you should have been among the first honored but as they say you save the
best for last and you sir are certainly among the best. The day you began posting this
blog became a little bit more classy and for that among your myriad of attributes we
honor you this Friday April 11 2008. The Blog and the world are just ever more
classy for your being and we thank you. Enjoy your day sir.

Good Morning Family!

Good morning bloggers,

Today is THE day!! Go Lakers.

Wow, AK/BK, you guys are early today, it's usually not up till past noon. Thanks!!

moko

Go Lakers!

Well, if I were an MVP candidate, tonight would be my night. I'm at home, on the big ESPN jumbotron.

I'd know that those Luke Walton 3s probably won't be falling tonight so I would tune up my shot which has been flat of late.

I'd play ferocious D. I'd flash my winning smile at the refs. I'd be everywhere the ball is.

I'd know that it's not about me scoring 50, it's about winning the game with a harmonious balance of team play promoted by me, hopefully on camera so the idiots that vote will finally give me the damn trophy.

GO Lakers

Wassup my Blog peeps? It's Friday and it's On and Poppin!

Man, this is a BIG FRIGGIN game. I hope the team can play with more sense of an urgency. Keep (David) West in check, and limit Tyson's lobs...And of course Peja and Mo Pete from launching 3's as if they stole something! And that kid Wright, we cannot allow him and traitor (lol) Pargo to go off!

Besides, we need to solidify our home court, this is a statement game if ever and not just for the MVP sweepstakes..EFF all that. We need the 1st spot, it would be good for our confidence, just good altogether!

Trevor and Slow healing ass Andrew need to get right, but anyway, we just have to play with what we have and not wallow in self-pity cuz we are missing some key guys..

GO LAKERS! The time is Now!

AK/BK,

Here is my question, do we have to submit 12 names of players that Lakers have to play during the playoffs or we can pick up anytime from the pool of 15?

I asked that question because Bynum/Ariza are still in the injured list but could join later. Mbenga/Newble can contribute on D for short minutes so a pool of 15 will be a great advantage for the Lakers.

If there is anything that Lakers lost in the deal with Pau was the opportunity of seeing Critt and Marc in the future. At the end of the day, I will still take Pau from the gamble. If Pau did not join the Lakers, maybe we're out of the playoffs. Next season, we have two promising PG's Coby Karl and Sun Yue. I hope PJ will give them a break. Look at Al Thornton of the Clips, if he were with the Lakers, he will just play sparingly. In the last few games of the Clips, he has been the regular go-to-guy.

Next year, watch the Grizzlies and Blazers, they have been growing by leaps and bounds with these best draft picks, a good strategist Coach will make them a real threat like the Hornets who were not even a playoff contender last year. Lakers will also be there but we need a lot of tweaking to improve our D, we are too soft in the perimeter and also in the post.

We need to step up and play well tonight against NO. No excuses if we lose this one at home.

The way the clips have played over their history -- I can't refer to them as the "red, white and blue" -- I prefer bleu, blanc, rouge -- http://tinyurl.com/5ztvdx

----------------------

Kobe jumping over the AM in that shoe add reminds me of the crazy dude who jumped over the Testarossa on "That's Incredible" -- and that was real!

I have a good feeling about Ariza folks. I think we are going to see him suit up this weekend. At least we know it was a broken bone and that's something they can really diagnose - unlike the mystery with AB17. And I like his new perspective and optimism. He is hungry to get back which bodes well for us with another much needed defensive presence to lock down the lane for the playoff run.

From the other thread - Rick F. - you won't be needing a shotglass my friend - its going to be a nice tumbler but it will be a happy vodka drink tonight, like a girly cosmo. It's going to be a tough game but I think one where we will defend home court. I am keeping the go, fight, win spirit all day today and nothing is going to get me down....

You hear that AK/BK - no dampening of our spirits today....only good karma.

LET'S GO LAKERS!!

How does Kobe win MVP regardless of record?

#1 - Lakers beat Hornets tonite
#2 - Kobe has 25, 7, and 7 in victory
#3 - Kobe guards CP3 down the stretch and causes turnovers + tough shots
#4 - Lakers finish at least #2 seed in West

Here's what true hoop says about #3
"It's not practical for a top offensive threat like Bryant to wear himself with injuries and fouls doing that for 82 regular-season NBA games. But it sure would be fun to watch Bryant assign himself to Paul down the stretch tonight. If that happens, and it leads to a Laker win, voters would have a lot to think about."

Who is the physician taking care of Trevor Ariza? Is it Dr. Altcheck from NY? We will know his prognosis before the end of the day. I hope it's favorable cuz Trevor is an important player in D. Playoffs is all about defense and game of adjustments.

Hope Gasol's foot problems withstand the back-to-back.

Good Morning, Laker Nation!

One more win closer to 57!

GO LAKERS!

Good Morning Laker Nation.
I have a few thoughts regarding last night's TNT broadcast...TNT friggin sucks! They cut to the Dallas Game for a good 10 minutes prior to covering the Lakers/Clips, with Ernie saying, 'The Lakers and Clippers haven't started yet.' which was not true as when they finally tuned in, it was midway through the 1st Quarter. Also, Charles Barkley is a very stuoid man. During the last Laker game on TNT (versus Utah) he was criticizing Derek Fisher for leaving Utah for LA and he couldn't understand why he couldn't have signed with Toronto or Milwaukee. Well, if Sir Charles had even bothered doing any kind of journalistic research he would have found out, quite quickly, that there were two, count 'em on one hand, two cities that could provide the specific care that Tatum needs for her eyes: New York and Los Angeles. Seeing as we brought Fish into the league and he won 3 championships more than Barkely EVER won here is it really any surprise which team Fisher chose? I might add that it was up to the management of the Utah Jazz to release Fisher. It was their decision. Charles, put down the hoagie and pick up a newspaper, it's all been printed and if you know how to log onto the internet maybe you could find it posted here at the fabulous Laker Blog...but maybe your hands are too soft and pudgy to work a mouse.

In regards to the game...that seemed like a return to the type of ball we were playing when we first got Gasol, solid throughout, very few un-forced TO's, nice free throw shooting and not settling for quick 3's. We worked it into the post in a number of different ways and as a result, our free flowing offence was hitting on most cylinders. Pau was solid (although he was the source of a few forced passes in the paint-something a defensive team like the Spurs or Pistons will quickly turn into transistion buckets), Kobe didn't try to do it all, Lamar lived at the stripe (as an aggressive power forward should) and the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens looked more like Vladimir Radmonavich when he helped the Clips make their bi-centennial trip to the playoffs. The best thing about this game, other than the starting 5 getting a big break in the 4th, was to see Fisher playing aggressively, but in control and hitting some distance shots, although he has had some trouble finishing around the hoop lately.
The Bench Mob
Luke Walton - Looks like he could become the second units main post presence. That would be nice because he is a deft passer and has a few different post-up moves that are difficult to counter, although Thorton did swat a little turnaround. But if Luke is willing to be the back to the basket player for the 2nd unit taht'll open it up a lot more for the guards.
Ronny Turiaf - He looks tired or his hips are bothering him. he just doesn't seem as active around the basket as he was up to about a month ago. He's not a back to the basket type of big, more of a spot up shooter, but he still helps anchor our defence, although he has returned to hacking guys when they shoot and not making smart plays on the ball.
DJ Mbenga - I love that he's looking to shoot and is playing with fire, but you don't need to shoot Von Wafer style as in every time the leather hits you in the hands. I don't think he passed the ball while he was in there once. But I like his attitude and he really gives the team a worldly look.
Chris Mihm - I've said it since he went down 2 years ago, if he can comeback close to anywhere like he was playing prior to the mangled ankles segment of his career, he could be a huge X-Factor in the playoffs.
Sasha Vujacic - Playing within himself for the most part, worries more about his hair than any NBA player I've ever seen (aside from AI) and is deadly on Offence and tenacious on Defence. Sometimes his forays into the paint are quite interesting to behold, but that's something to work on over the summer. That and a post game because you 6'6" machine!
Jordan Farmar - Although his early season razzle-dazzle has been replaced with a quiet effeciency, I like this version better right now. He went through a jack-it-up-cause-I'm-open phase after the All Star break, but he's back to anchoring the Bench Mob. But he needs to step it up on defence. That's a summer project for the 2nd year man. Learn to anticipate the charge, force guys to the outside instead of channeling them into our lackadaisical post defence. He goes for the steal and then guys like Jarret jack cut to the hoop and lay it in. He's better than that, but he's got to get better at moving those feet.

Long post, but we're looking at the playoffs and I wanted to get that out of my system. Great game last night, lets close out the season on a big 4 game winning streak.

GO LAKERS!!!!!

Sounds like good news for Trevor Ariza! I can't wait for him to start playing again!

Regarding Andrew Bynum, give that kid some Dit Da Jow and a leg brace and throw him on the court! The Kraken needs releasing!

GO LAKERS!

great news about trevor.
i've always thought that his offense was overlooked. This guy is not afraid to take the ball to the hole, and doesn't treat the ball like a hot potato just because Kobe is on the floor. Earlier this year I saw him run the "UCLA" pick and roll with Bynum on consecutive plays. That was cool. He's got defense, but his steely demeanor overlaps into his offensive game as well. great addition to a great team.

Geez you stay away from the blog for half a day and you miss important stuff - like Faith's birthday. By an amazing coincidence, both my daughter and my son were also born on April 10th. Hmmm I wonder how old Faith is - maybe she's my illegitimate love child :-)

Anyhow, back to the Laker real world. I am SO disappointed about Andrew. I think we'll do fine in the first round without him, but I don't think we can take the Spurs or Hornets without his defense on Duncan and Chandler. I guess we'll find out tonight and Sunday.

GO LAKERS!!!!

GAME DAY!!!!

GO LAKERS

Good morning Mamba24, good morning Charles & a GREAT BIG WOOOHOOOO to the UNBELIEVABLE LAKER NATION!!!

What a win -what a game - can't wait for the repeat tonight!

Mamba24 - you seem to have left me off the "55 win" bandwagon - please put me back on there. Don't know what happened....!!

I AM SOOOO EXCITED (and I think I like it) about how we played last night, and how we'll do tonight. I personally would love to give a great big LAKER SHOUT OUT to BShaw. Dude should read the riot act to the guards before EVERY game & tell them about playing some D!!

I'm dancing like Ronny (except hopefully I won't get clocked for it...) and this little number came into my head.

Sung to the tune of Mamba#5:

A little bit of Kobe in the post
A little bit of LO coast to coast
A little bit of Sasha playing D
A little bit of Bill's boy draining three's
A little bit of BEAST waitin' in the wings
A little bit of PJ with 10 rings

Feel free to change, imbellish or otherwise ignore...

IT'S GAME DAY BABY!!!!

GO LAKER!!

The BEAN for MVP AND FINALS MVP or NO PEACE!

One Two Punch. Mamba24, you are always #1!

Can we please have Kobe guarding Chris Paul for the majority of the game tonight?

I think we can handle having someone else guard Mo Petersen.

Jay Jay

Belated Happy Birthday to your kids!

Thanks Mamba24 - I am looking forward to honors on wonderful TAX DAY! But rather than look at it in the negative - it's also the last regular season game for the forum blue and gold!!!! Yahoo. Thanks again

LET's GO LAKERS!

vman - did you hear somewhere that the game is now on ESPN? I think its on Fox Sports.... do tell your source.

3 more wins for the great Lakers! Let's get that momentum going!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MOOOOOOOOOOORNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING LAKER NATION!!!!!!!

Congrats Twoody, a well deserved honor. Thanks for the slices of common sense.

It's a back to back night, which is no fun if your with a girl, but works for the basketball community. I think we looked pretty good last night. I mean it was the Clippers, but they made it look like they knew what they were doing...sorta. Whats with the Luke haters? I think he is coming along great right now and if he keeps this up, I might stop drawing on all of his pictures that I see. Seriously, my computer screen has little mustaches and beards with crazy eyes all over it. Makes it hard to post some times. Anyway Luke looked great and Mbenga did pretty good too. And everybody got http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1rZBxn3Zx8 so all was good last night. We got to rest the starters in the 4th while our bench increased a lead. All around great night. Keep it up guys and keep your eyes on the prize...wow there was like...cheese dripping off that statement wasn't there? OK I have to make up for that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Nj6G_KK2Ps&feature=related

LakerMan 420

btw, mamba24, thanks for putting me on the roll call. if there was a blogger hall of fame you'd definitely be in it.

Hey all: Read the last sentence team - sounds to me like something to post on a locker:

John Reid of The Times-Picayune: "Hornets point guard Chris Paul has one final chance to convince MVP voters he is the better pick than Kobe Bryant, LeBron James or Kevin Garnett. Tonight, New Orleans plays the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center, and although Paul and Bryant are unlikely to be guarding each other, they will get most of the attention because both are considered the MVP front-runners. ... 'It's a big game, and the Lakers helped us out a little bit losing at Portland,' Paul said."

Hooray for wins!

Reporting for duty Mr Mamba!

The Flood is gone, at least for today.

Special Ops Research for the game:

The key to the game is going to be keeping Tyson Chandler off of the boards, and stopping Peja from hitting the three. Two tall orders.

Andrew Bynum was quite effective at the first, holding Chandler to 7 and 9 rebounds in the games he played.

Without Bynum and Gasol downed by injury, Chandler 20 scooped up boards.

The good news is, Gasol has historically had good success on the offensive end against Chandler, having outings of 20+ points and 8-10 rebounds.

Bad news is, Chandler has posted 17 and 19 rebound games against Gasol as a Grizzly.

I hope the coaching staff has pointed out the need to keep Chandler off the boards, and make Peja a driver, not a shooter.

Good tune up game last night for tonight's MVP showdown.

I like CP3 but Kobe should get the MVP! Can CP3 do this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIWeEFV59d4

Not only can the Mamba score 81 points but can jump over expensive cars in a single bound!

Important game tonight, if the Lakers want momentum going into the playoffs and if Kobe wants to be MVP, then play some defense and kick the Hornets @$$ tonight

Go Lake Show!!

Who cares about MVP? All that matters is winning!!!!

We're going to miss Ariza's defense and we're going to miss Bynum's presence.

Hey MAMBA24, thanks for adding me to the Roll Call! I've been meaning to ask to be included, but you did it anyway.

¡Gracias, campeón!

**NOT SURE IF ANYONE HAS SEEN THIS YET**

**Kobe jumping over an Aston Martin**.

Yes. it's gotta be fake. But it's FREAKIN FUNNY and Kobe acting like all giddy like Ronny Turiaf is hilarious. Oh, and Ronny is in the video too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIWeEFV59d4

Good morning again Laker Nation,

When I posted earlier, I hadn't yet seen Scoop Jackson's Page 2 column on ESPN.com. It reads, in part: "in the past five years in professional sports, no athlete (with the exception of maybe Bonds or T.O.) has been more hated and hated on than Kobe Bryant. Don't believe me? Watch what happens when he doesn't win the MVP … again."

Tonight is more than an opportunity for a W. It is more than an opportunity to move up in the Western Conference standings. It is a chance to definitively assure Kobe the MVP trophy, as much as anything can.

Every one of Kobe's team mates as the obligation to make CP3's life a Holy Living Hell for 48 minutes. Shut him down both offensively and defensively. The entire Starting 5 needs to come out swinging, focused, determined, and dedicated to air-tight Defense.

No more pablum about how the MVP trophy doesn't mean anything. Sure it does. It's an important benchmark on the way to the NBA Championship. If the Lakers are to be true contenders, there is NO MERCY to be shown from here on out. That's right. I said, No Mercy. Go Lakers!

First of All Happy Belated Birthday to FAITH!!!

Now on to the playoff race, wow we are looking at the Suns and That would be great to bounce them with Shaq in the first round. Defense has to be a huge concern in the locker room. If Andrew comes back, his conditioning will be horrible and I am afraid he won't be much of a difference maker. Trevor - well his defense has been missed immensely and so has Bynum’s shot blocking but the team just has to grind and do the best with what they have. The big difference will be Coach Phil teaching his team how to switch from panic mode into selfless 4th quarter screens, pick and rolls, and whatever it takes to allow their leader KOBE to dominate and along with that he can use all the new talent he has given his game this year to create and dish to open teammates. I think Michael did most of this on his own, I am just hoping Phil understands the guys have to realize the best player on the floor needs to be open, get open and also get good looks. I hope to God the bench can produce this year in the playoffs. Especially 1-3 quarters.
New Orleans and San Antonio, Damn, now that is about as tough a finish for anyone ever in this league. We win, we show we belong and can go to the Finals. Go Lakers.

As one of the early adopters of the 55 win bandwagon, I'd
like to take this moment to say...

ahem hem...

54 down.

1 to go.

Interesting tidbit from Eric Pincus at Hoopsworld (linked by K Bros above under "more news and notes"):

- I also chatted with Jordan Farmar about his appearance on the television program "Sports Science" in which he fed a pass to Jason Kapono - who was able to hit the shot in just .22 seconds. The NBA rule says a player can't catch and shoot in less than .3 seconds but Kapono was able to get it done. Farmar said they should change the rule, they proved it! He also said it Kapono did it on his second shot. The first was over .3 seconds after which they analyzed his release, worked with a coach and then hit it at .22 on the very next try.

Reading all the post stating great news about Ariza I guess I missed the report that said he was cleared to play.

3 games left, and here's how it shakes out:

If the Lakers win all 3 games, they're at LEAST 2nd seed.
If New Orleans also lost 1 other game (e.g. Dallas), then
the Lakers would be the 1 seed.

If the Lakers win 2 of the 3, they'll be at least a 3 seed.
That much is guaranteed. If 1 of the 2 they beat is San
Antonio, then they're the 2 seed. If they lose to SanAn and
win the other 2, then they're the 3 seed.

If the Lakers win 1 or 0 of the remaining games, then it
depends on the Suns and Houston (who play each other
tonight). In that situation, the Lakers could end up in
the 3, 5, or 6 seed, but no lower than 6th.

The New Orleans Ho's have been playing REALLY well
lately, but I'm hoping the Lakers will take a "playoffs are
already started" attitude into tonight's and Sunday's games
and win out for the 1 or 2 seed.

mamba24 - in anticipation of an important game tonight, and acknowledging the great team effort from last night, how about dusting off the Support Our Team 1-15 wagon?

There is no way Lakers can lose tonight they pay Phil 10 billion a year to make sure they win the BIG games.

WHEW - back on the "55 win" bandwagon.

Thanks, Mamba24 - my hat's off to you sir!

GO LAKERS!

Morning Mamba24, Charles and all you die-hard Laker fans!

Jamie Sweet, good post, I thought TNT dropped the ball as well even though. the game started like 7 mins into the 1st.
Lame.

Good win last night, glad to see the starters get a little rest and a Luke Walton Sighting, not to mention Mbenga coming in as well.
Thoughts on the clippers - if they can keep Brand they have a pretty solid front line with Thornton and Kaman. I would cut my losses on Livingston and draft a PG.
Too funny, Smush getting booed.

As for tonight, you know we will see Kobe's eye of the Tiger!!

Have a great Friday all!

Always a good day after a clip beatdown lol.

Defense was pretty good done too!

Go Lakers!

P.S. 55 win bandwagoneers gets redemption tonight? lol.

Getting more amped about the game tonight after doing a little LTLF, LakerTom research........

This season ag. Hornets:
Game #1 - L @ home = no Lamar
Game #2 - W @ NO = no Sasha but did have Trevor & AB17. LAL bench outscored NOH 42-9
Game #3 - L@NO = Gasol sprained ankle in 1Q.

Summary: NOH hasn't seen this current team except on film. If LAL Bench has big night, LO brings his rebound prowess & a double/double, KB24 scores his avg. and Gasol has big game or shuts West's out of a lot of boards we might actually have an awesome, statement "W".

I know you all will have much more to add but I am officially hyped up now........

LET's GO LAKERS!

Nobody has noticed some of the barbs Phil is sending out in regards to the Medical Staff?? The comment a couple of weeks ago about Vitti trying to get players ready and then yesterday stating our Crack Medical Staff. There is a hint there that this might be getting under his skin a little bit. My question is how could it not.
I am almost afraid to hear the report today. Is it really to much to ask for a positive medical report for a change?

BD

After Luke's game last night get prepared to see a lot of LUKE tonight. Phil was smiling the whole time Luke was on the floor.

God help us.
