What a difference 82 games makes, you know? In October, the season began with the world waiting patiently for the Lakers to either implode or be dismantled. Now, after Tuesday night's 124-101 win over the Kings at Staples, a game in which they jumped out to an 8-0 start were never behind, the Lakers are the top seed in the Western Conference, and are poised to do some serious damage when the playoffs begin this weekend. It wasn't via the typical script, but the Lakers got it done this season, no doubt, and who they'll Lakers will play in the first round will be determined tonight. If Dallas loses to the Hornets (could happen) while Denver takes care of Memphis (likely to happen), LA will face the Mavericks. If Dallas wins or Denver somehow loses, it'll be the Nuggets. Either way, the Lakers realize that while they've accomplished a lot, the real work begins now (it's playoff time... time to break out our playoff caliber cliches).
Tuesday's action saw an off shooting night for Kobe (3-13 from the floor), but a big night from the reserves- something that has buoyed the team all year long- allowed the starters to sit during the fourth and get some rest. That'll continue today, as the Lakers will have a practice free Wednesday, and assuming they open the playoffs on Sunday, as they usually do, the light workload will continue into Thursday. With the team playing well, the goal is to get everyone feeling well, too.
In the meantime, we can all consider how improbable a 57 win season seemed this summer, and how killer play from Kobe, combined with a lot of help from his friends, got them there.
A title would give the Lakers their fourth of the decade. Does that make them a dynasty? Not sure, but it's fun to talk about. Could the big bad Lakers even be considered a Cinderella?
Even if they have an MVP?
In Oakland, the curious way Golden State's season ended, with Baron Davis on the bench, has everyone looking at the future with another brand of curiosity.
He's mulled it over, and now reports say that Kevin Love will declare for the NBA Draft Thursday.
Could any members of the Lakers coaching staff end up with the top gig in Chicago?

When I think of the Lakers Blog, I think of family. Dysfunctional family maybe but
family still. Sure this is a Lakers Blog where Basketball goes on. It’s also a place
to go to when you are feeling down. A place to go to celebrate your happiness.
A place to be consoled and a place to be scolded. In short Family. This season
has been one of the greatest seasons In memory, perhaps because so little was
expected and so much was accomplished. Not just the number of wins but we
actually saw the creation of a TEAM before our eyes. Not just a group of players,
but a group of players who genuinely cared for each other much like……FAMILY.
We watched a team come together and grow and thrive and nourish each other
and thrive from that nourishment. I’ve watched myself come to this Blog and thrive
and grow thanks to the unique Mix of views and individuals that we have here. We
have season ticket holders blogging with TNT watchers. Millionaires
(Yes we do quite a few may I add) blogging with everyday Joes. Whites, Blacks,
Asians, Latino’s, men, woman and dogs(I know Jon Delilah is not a Dog but an
independent entity) and the most important thing to any of them is one thing, One
Unifying Force. THE FREAKIN LA LAKERS. This Blog is unique in that respect.
A lot of the credit goes to our Blog Gods the Kambrothers who allow us the freedom
to express ourselves and choose interesting threads to help facilitate discussion.
Don’t think just anybody could be placed into their position and you’d have the same Blog.
I can assure you, you would have a much different and much less interesting Blog.
So as the regular season ends I would not only like to thank Mitch and Dr. Buss as

That Simmons piece about MVP history is an eye opener.
How 'bout the '87 MVP race with Magic, Mike, and Larry? Bird's best season. Mike averaged 37. Magic won.
The 61' with Oscar, Elgin, Petit, Russel and Wilt... the numbers were even more insane. Averaging triple doubles didn't get you a trophy.
This year is almost par for that course.

What about Phil for coach of the year? I know people talk about Byron and Rivers and they should. But Rivers had a hungry superstar coming in and 2 very good veteran players.
Byron has a great young point guard and hungry players.
Phil not only had to do Xs and Os but had to Zen his way to this team. Bynum could have said to heck with you Kobe and sulked all season. Farmar could have said, what? another guard taken. Instead they both worked the butts off.
Think of it this way, apparently the Bull young players collapsed because they thought they were being traded. Well Phil had to work it out with Kobe ripping his teammates and he got them to work harder. Of course the major success of any team is its players but my vote for coach of the year, Phil.
BTW with Kobe: the summer is not forgotten nor forgiven for this fan. I think the treated Dr. Buss, the organization, the fans, and the city horribly. He was just focused on the negatives. And yes there were some. And yes I know and appreciate his desire and effort and talent.
But he is a grown human being. He had to know how the Lakers stood by him and the fans and the city during his Colorado ordeal. Private jets all the cheers when there were boos everywhere else. The fans and the city have always treated him like a prince. And he has the best owner in the game. Think of this, since Kobe joined the league what other team had won three championships or more? Only San Antonio and I am not sure if it was three or four.
So he has been on the most successful team during his time in the NBA and was beloved by a city. Yes he was frustrated. But he needs to give a public apology to his teammates, city, owner, and fans. Then I will forgive. He kind of hints here or there and I know he has a huge ego.
But guess what? He was an oaf. And he needs to apologize for that publicly.

It makes my head spin that there's that much possible
variation on the last day of the season. It's like that ride
at carnivals where they strap you to the side of a cylinder

hotdogs and cotton candy that you ate and two other people
lose their lunch too when the hurl whiff hits them and then
they have to hose down the ride.

Sorry could not help but take care of the business, was having breakfast this morning with Charlie Gambino, Niky Maldini and my Luca Brazzi celebrating Laker's capping the #1 spot in the West. Some nut walked over and started to bad mouth the lakers so you know we had to take care of the business, you know what I mean "kapish", end of discussion.
Lakers better not fail me this post season otherwise the business has to be conducted again my way...you know what I mean...I am talking to you!!

Beaaaauuuutifulllll
I am so pleased to see that we overcame so many horrible injuries and all the drama, Defense is the key from here on out. I am real happy Portland didn't make it as the 8th seed! Sad for the Warriors to not make it although I hate to see them against us too. So…Denver? I can see them doing quite well against us, Carmelo can play like the MVP of the league on any given night and AI also, let’s hope they are on some bad ganja if we see them. Dallas - I think they still watch Kobe too much, Avery has shown his team will not play buckle down D, Nowitzki needs to be shut down by Odom if we get that draw.
Go Lakers, we need that bench to arrive and be steady.
Thanks Dr. Buss and Mitch Kupchak for doing everything you could to convince the Grizzles to make the worst trade in their history...a few more drafts will be the truth to that. Pau Gasol, you are the saviour so PLAY LIKE IT!
p.s. Kobe tell Phil to watch how Michael took over and led all those championships, his team let him in the ends of games and we need that dominance from you! The rest of the team do not forget how you got here and don't stop playing D or setting REAL NBA screens to open up this triangle. Lets get it done, bring home the trophy!
Somehow, I have heard enough BS about CP3 that I would not be surprised if he won the MVP - which is OK more motivation for Kobe to bring home the Big O’Brien.

Please spare us the TJ Simers links. I have been a regular follower of your blog for a long time and like most of your writings and links. But please, no TJ. That dude is a huge Laker/Kobe hater. He never has anything constructive to write too. I mean we all know what he just wrote. It happened. Get over it. We are 1-seed int he west. Kobe might ot might not win MVP. As a journalist tell me something which I as a layman do not know. I don't know why TJ still has a job at LA times.

Now it is a race to 16, First one to 16 wins, gets the trophy. One game at a time, but 16 we need and 16 we will get. If we can get AB and T. Ariza back in second round, I really like our chances. 16 wins to get the ring. 10 Rings for Phil Jax, 4 rings for D. Fish and Kobe Bryant. Congratulations to all the Lakers fans, without you, winning the western conference reg season title would not have been possible. Me...I like the fear, it means we are close, it means we are ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mamba, add me to the Kareem birthday bandwagon as his psychologist...something about his facial expressions always makes me think he's either in pain or just totally unhappy. Happy Birthday anyway!
On another note, now that we've won the West and will most likely face Denver...can we hold off on bringing AB and Ariza back until the 2nd round? I'm hoping by them we can get one of those hyperbaric chambers Dirk got in Dallas. I'm calling Cuban now...think he'll let us borrow it?

I will make it to at least 1 play off game this year mark my words! What a season and what a team and while I m at it what fans! Ive looked at blog sites for other teams and none come close to what we have here. Ive been a reader for months now but have rarely posted due to how pretty much someone always beats me to punch of what I have to say in any particular game b(both good an bad). Having said, Mamba24 I humbly request to be added to the band wagon if there is any room left:)

Vman - Technically, the Lakers aren't Western Conf Champs until the make it through the west. They're just the #1 seed. I'll take it though.
It's weird how we, as fans, are back to celebrating things other than actually winnning the Championship. Just shows how far the team fell. It's nice to be on the road back up the mountain.

The Clippers should sign Darius Miles for next season.
They could probably get him cheap. Maybe he could actually
be a productive player again (doubtful). But if they play him in
at least 10 games, it will put his salary back on Portland's
salary cap for the next two years.
