You won't C-Webb on the court anymore

March 25, 2008 |  4:12 pm

Apparently, the vet's about to end his comeback bid with the Warriors and call it a career.  And a pretty good one at that.

For those fans clamoring for Mitch to bring 1/5 of the Fab Five into the fold (say that five times fast), be sure to send him a thank you note for dodging that anti-climactic bullet.

I love you guys

Korey,

I read some of your posts on Sasha. Others have
responded, but I'll throw this out.

This past summer & this season has shown *ALL*
Lakers fans *WE*, the fans, *SUCK* when it
comes to making basketball decisions! Not just we're
hit and miss, we flat out *SUCK*!!!! That would include
you. That would include me.

For the first time in Sasha's career, he's actually making
substantial contributions to the team. He is *NOT* a 10
year veteran. He has never been a starter. Mitch & Phil
have done a *VERY* good job in bringing out his skill
set and not giving up on him. (as if I had a choice) I'm
going to let Phil coach Sasha instead of demanding
Sasha's head on a platter. Sasha has to learn better
shot selection and when to shoot. Phil is addressing
that. Kobe is addressing that. D-Fish is addressing that.

Say it with me Lakers fans:

Go Sasha!
Go Kobe!
Go Lakers!

Juanman:

That Bhattacharya article was spot on!

It's the MVP award. It's not the "player on playoff-bound team we'd most like to see in an ad targeted to children" award, which is what it has turned into.

Seriously, objectively, Shaq, Iverson and Kobe should each have had more than one by now. Nash, and Nowitzki are excellent players and all around decent-seeming human beings, but if put all players on the table to pick new teams, no GM would ever have picked either of them first.

Mamba24 is the hardest working man in LAKERSBLOG. He's our James Brown: I GOT YOU!

KOBE MVP

Mamba... Oooo Oooo Oooo Oooo

Mamba24! You are early!!!
AK/BK, Charles, Rick, LakerTom, LTLF, all the other ladies!
It's GAME DAY!
Yahoo!

Korey and LTLF need to lay off today. No more back and forth negative karma. And Rick - hold back from getting in that riff. We need our role players/bench to be confident every time they step on the court whenever that might be. Let's give them props for what they have done this season because they have pulled us out of jams.

GO LAKERS!!

Good Morning Mamba24, Good Morning Charles, Good Morning Laker Nation!

GAME DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And, as someone else said earlier, we need to start the "tacos" chant in the first quarter. We need to see Coby play some minutes!

Focus, Intensity, Defense, Control the game from the start! 48 minutes, no less!

GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dammit!

When is this injury crap going to be done with? I'm really starting to get angry with the constant injury updates and being told that players are not coming back. I think that once they do get back, the other guys are going to be so worn out from carrying the load they aren't going to be nearly as effective.

Aaaaahhhhhh . . . Now that the negativity is out of my system.

Good morning Laker Fans.

It's gameday. Are you ready?

Let's get it started Larry!

We are totally ready for roll call. How you keep track of everything here makes you a Digital Monster! You are the best. Let's all say it together:

GO LAKERS!

The D,
"no GM would ever have picked either of them first."

The criteria for selecting MVP should be:

Consider the season-long performances during the 2007-2008 season. Based on those performances, if it is Aug 1, 2007, you are a GM, and you are selecting your roster for the 2007-2008 season ONLY, who would be your first choice?

Mamba24,

You don't have to thank me. Thank you for being on the blog.

Respect,

Mamba:

Add me to the GET WELL SOON JON K bandwagon.........

Jon, our wishes are with you for a quick recovery.........your Simple Direct Thoughts have become something to look forward to here on the blog. Hope Delilah is confiortable and hanging in there. Can't believe you're dealing with all that and stcuk in CVleveland on top of it!

Glad to get that out of my system..feel alot better..

Don't blame Sasha, he has a medical condition that limits his playing ability.

Its called S.A.D.D.

Sasha's Attention Deficit Disorder

He his super hyper and can't completely control his actions. He may appear to be calm, but inside his mind is screaming at him to shoot the ball and makes him run wild like a mad man on the court.

It can also make him very annoying to others who play with him. Opposing players may want to choke and elbow him, while teammates may want to 'shoot him' when he shoots 1 on 3.

Phil Jackson and the Lakers know this and are treating him with medication.

Please be patient with Sasha as he is adjusting to his medication.

Any word on Pau's return?

LeBron = Role model?? Maybe as far as being a model for a great, young and promising athlete and likely future Hall of Famer but he is still very much single and making babies out of wedlock so if we are gonna call someone a ROLE model does that fit the mode?? And I am merely inquiring not on no BronBron playa hatin' typa ish, but lets just keep it real can we?

Thats an honest question...I mean, Tom Brady can be thrown into that too if we wanna go there..He has a kid and is without ring...Or perhaps it doesnt matter anymore when speaking in terms of who is or should be considered a SPORTS ROLE MODEL..

Perhaps it depends on the player, if they are AS WELL-LOVED as both BronBron and Brady are, maybe they get a free pass...

I dunno..I just thought I would make note of it..If anyone cares to enlighten me on the subject matter, by all means..Please do..It would be interesting to read any commentary about others feelings.

Mamba24,

Thank you so much for including me in your best wishes bandwagon. Actually, I have no to time to blog because I was a full time baby sitter of my granddaughter at the Valley who was under the weather, nothing really of great concern compared to Jon K. With the infusion of new energies from you and Charles and several morning greeters, our opinions are moot already riped with memories of the past Laker glories as often observed by sophisticated posters. At least in our appeal last weekend, we got back JayJay, Kiwi, Mr. Maguire, JJ. I'm sure someday Lolo, Stargazin' and Jorema will start posting in full force as well.

Undoubtedly, you are needed more to be here at all times. You are the Gatekeepper and the Father of Bandwagons of this blog. You cannot afford to go fishing especially in the coming days where the morale of everyone is back on a high gear. All I ask is that when engaged in frenzied debates, it is nice to read courteous and respectful combatants explaining the merits of their opinions than attacking the messenger in the tone of vociferous diatribes. (Even our scandalous politicians, they are respectful in tone when debating with their fellow unethical politician. lol!) Whatever opinions we have with one another, there is one common denominator - we are addressing these issues to fellow Laker fans, and at time like this when we are aspiring for a higher objective, as much as possible we should have one voice, ONE ASPIRATION. Passionate fans or the GHE fans as often described by LakerTom may point out some negative obsevations but they too, should aspire for the overall benefit of the team.

Whats up Laker Nation!!!!!!!!!

Good morning! Game day baby.... Lets win another!

WE ARE THE LAKERS..........WE ARE UNSTOPABLE

Simi Laker Girl

CORRECTION, with my LeBron post, I said "MODE" instead fit the "MOLD" .....

Ex-

That's exactly right! The MVP is literally an award based on hindsight, and the question is "Whose year do I want most if I could go back in time and assemble a dream team at the start of this year?"

I think this encapsulates the objective stuff, like PER and team wins, as well as the observable but not measurable stuff like good luck, leadership and "swing" amongst peers.

Anyone who wanted webber on the lakers was not paying attention to basketball outside of LA. Webbers knees were shot. He didn't do much of anything in detroit but cash his checks thats why they did not bring him back after one failed season.

He definately was a top 5 maybe even top 3 PF of his era and unfortunately injuries and not staying in tip top shape slightly shortened his career. But 15 yrs is not a bad run by any stretch. Don't worry he'll be a talking head for sombodies network soon enough

The 'Good Doctor' is in the house. Is ready and willing to do his part in restoring order to the Lakers Universe.

Listen Lakersland. We've got a job to do. Three weeks to get this Lakers team healthy, in shape, and ready to kick some NBA Playoff butt.

No more infighting. Save that for Phoenix, San Antonio, Utah, and any other trolls that are unfortunate enough to get in our way.

Now let's go out and get us an NBA Championship.

- A Dan Akroyd like speech from the movie, "1942"

Korey,

>>>If we had 15 guns on the bench, there would have been
>>>15 holes in Sasha at the moment. Sasha can do that
>>>somewhere else but not here.

Sorry, my posts on the subject were really long, so you must
not have read the whole thing. I agree. Sasha shot poorly on
Sunday and got caught up in the shoot-as-fast-as-you-can
mentality along with most of the other Lakers. If I'd have
had a gun, my TV would have had 15 holes in it. And
not just for Sasha's stupidity. In that game almost everyone
had a handful of dumb moves that pissed me off.

But consider this. If Kobe had started the game shooting
0-for-5, nobody would have blinked, he would have kept
shooting, and by the end of the game he'd likely be over
40% and maybe over 45%. But if Sasha or Farmar or
(Heaven help him) Luke were to shoot 0-for-5, they probably
get a front row seat for most of the rest of the game, and
they get crucified on the blog the next day.

If you trace it back, you'll find that my initial post on this
round of Sasha-defense, was a response to Jay Jay,
who specifically said, "I HATE this guy." The capitalization
was his. And he said this the morning after Sasha had
contributed a lot to a Lakers win. Yet Jay Jay picks out
one or two little nits and wants to blame Sasha for almost
LOSING the game.

My response was because I felt it was unfair of someone
to criticize a player who did a LOT more positive than
negative in that game -- if they had lost the game, there
were several players who would have been more
culpable. But more importantly, why try to point fingers
of blame for a loss, when the Lakers WON!?!??! And worse
yet, to point that finger of blame at one of the players who
most helped them win? A role player who contributed
more than most of the starters for the night!

Like you, Jay Jay overemphasized Sasha's mistakes as
if they happen on every possession in every game. They
don't. This season, I'd say Sasha makes more positive
contributions than negative in 3 or 4 out of 5 games. Last
season, they were lucky to get positive contributions from
Sasha in ONE out of 5 games. He's a young player and
he's improving, and I think that he can still get better.

I just can't help setting the record straight when someone
starts knocking my Lakers when they don't deserve to
be knocked. Most fans here would defend Kobe any day
of the week (Gunner excepted). For me, it extends to
all of the Lakers, even Luke (though my goodwill toward
Luke is starting to wear thin).

So if someone says, "Sasha shot poorly on Sunday. He
needs to show better judgement in his shooting selection.",
then I'd probably agree with them. But if someone says
"Sasha is terrible and constantly hurts the team with his
shooting." or "Sasha is constantly turning the ball over.",
then I feel compelled to disagree with them and to present
the facts about why I feel that way. Jay Jay at least is
honest about his bias - he admits that he hates Sasha.
Personally, I think if you took Sasha off this team at the
start of the season and gave his minutes to Critter or
Coby, then the Lakers have 5 to 7 more losses. Same
thing for Farmar. Don't underestimate the value of the
bench players to this squad.

Laker/Kobe Fan,

>>>That was a hard smacking post you did on Korey

Uh, thanks I guess. The intention wasn't so much to "hard
smack" anyone. And Korey made some good points as well
(though he was a bit obsessed with asserting that I think that
all Shooting Guards do is shoot).

>>>Either you are a sports writer posing as ordinary
>>>poster or you really have all the time to evaluate
>>>each game, research and compare stats.

Nah, just a huge Lakers geek who knows where the
numbers are on the web for the most part. espn.com has
most of the stats I provide (e.g. Sasha's and other players'
shooting percentages and turnovers). Occasionally I go
to basketball-reference.com to get some historical stats.

And once in a rare while, if someone makes a comment
about something they don't track stats for (e.g. if someone
says that "Farmar's man is constantly blowing by him to
the rim") and if I recorded the last game on my PVR, then
I'll go look at the game and do stats for that one game. It's
actually pretty educational -- sometimes I find that Mike T
or Korey or whoever was completely correct about some
player screwing up in some way. But as often as not, they
were remembering one or two specific plays and assuming
it happened all the time.

I actually agree with Korey that Sasha's shot selection isn't
always good. But I think it's getting much better, to the point
that I trust it more often than not.

It's all good.

I think I'll be controversial here and predict that Luke will
have a big game tonight. GO LUKE!!!

FAIR WEATHER LAKERS FAN:"The 'Good Doctor' is in the house. Is ready and willing to do his part in restoring order to the Lakers Universe. Dr. Fatty PhD in Lakers Trivia and Nonsense PS. Mamba24. Good to see you."

hobbitmage,

>>>This past summer & this season has shown *ALL*
>>>Lakers fans *WE*, the fans, *SUCK* when it
>>>comes to making basketball decisions!

Yeah, no kidding. I was kinda on the fence about trading
Kobe, but even so I was kinda optimistic about the possibility
of getting 2 or 3 good starters in exchange for Kobe (e.g.
Hamiltion/Prince? Deng/Gordon/Thomas? Marion/Barbosa?)
It's SOOOOOO much better that a few of the Lakers young
players blossomed into quality players and Kobe stuck around
to see it happen.

I was one of the optimistic ones last summer, and I was
predicting the Lakers could get a 4 seed. I don't think any
of us seriously believed that the Lakers could be one of
the top 3 or 4 contenders for a title this year. And they
were that even beFORE they got Gasol. Now some dare
whisper the word dynasty.

In the summer, I would gladly have given away Bynum,
Odom, Turiaf, Farmar, and anyone else not named Kobe
for Kevin Garnett. And the team would have been pretty
good with KB and KG. But now I'm not so certain that they
aren't better off having kept all the scrubs that blossomed
into playas.

Korey,

>>>What do great teams have in common? CONSISTENT
>>>ROLE PLAYERS.

They also have good luck in their stars staying healthy.
They also have 2 or 3 all-stars.

But more importantly, what defines "consistent" in your
statement.

Is it having good stats? If so, then Farmar and Sasha
pass with flying colors (though Luke doesn't). Though
each of them has had some stinker games this season,
they have enough good games, that overall their stats are
among the tops for reserves in the league.

Is it playing perfectly with no mistakes every single night?
If so, then no player on any team can live up to that. Robert
Horry has bad nights. Antonio McDyess has bad nights.
Leandro Barbosa has bad nights. James Posey has bad
nights. ALL role players have bad nights. And even starters
have bad nights.

>>>Until Farmar, Sasha, et. al get consistent in what they
>>>bring each night, the Lakers will struggle to be a great
>>> team.

Well, two points here. What they need to bring every night
for the Lakers to be successful is effort. Sasha may have
a bad shooting night or Farmar may turn the ball over several
times in one night, but if they're keeping up their effort on the
defensive end and keeping their head in the game, then they
can still contribute to a Laker win, even in the playoffs.
They don't have to make EVERY shot or get EVERY rebound
or whatever to be consistent - they just have to play hard
and play well more often than they play badly.

Getting back to my first two points though, "great" teams
tend to have several top-tier players and they tend to stay
healthy more often than not. If you park Garnett and Pierce
on the bench for an extended period of time, then their
record would look a lot closer to the Lakers' record.

The Lakers are close to having the top tier players - with the
improvement by Bynum, Odom playing up to his potential
and the addition of Gasol, but so far they haven't all been
on the floor at the same time. But think back to pre-Gasol
when Bynum was still healthy. The Lakers were not only
winning most games, they were DOMINATING teams like
the Hornets and the Suns. This Lakers squad with Bynum
healthy is capable of being a great team. But if you take
away Bynum (or Kobe or probably Lamar), then it's a lot
harder to be great, regardless of what the role players do.

While consistency of the role players is important to being
a great team, having your top players play is more important.
So if the Lakers don't reach the level of greatness you're
expecting of them, point the finger at Bynum's knee and
Gasol's ankle, not Sasha's shooting and Farmar's tiff with
Turiaf.

>>>That's bottom line. Argue that all you want, but that's
>>>the truth.

The truth is that Sasha and Farmar ARE consistent... for
backup players. If they were any more consistent, then
they'd be starters. And when they both grow up, I think they
both will get more consistent and be starters.

Long Time,

Thanks for a series of very outstanding posts, including a very gentlemanly response to Korey. No need to talk smack with fellow Laker fans. Let's leave that to fans of the Celtics, Suns, Warriors, Hornets, Spurs, Pistons, etc.

Excellent job! One question - how long is long time?

Tom

Mamba24

GO LAKERS

LakerTom,

>>>No need to talk smack with fellow Laker fans.

Definitely. Everybody has a right to an opinion about some
player or another, and if someone is a bit more critical of some
player and I'm more forgiving of them, that just makes for an
interesting discussion.

>>>how long is long time?

The first time I can remember actually paying attention
regularly and watching what games I could was in 1980.
I was in high school at the time. The two most famous people
(wrt the NBA) to come from my high school? Cherokee Parks
(remember him?) and Kobe's wife Vanessa.

Before 1980, I was vaguely aware of the Lakers, but I
was more attentive to baseball and football at the time.
I could have named Kareem, but other than that, I probably
couldn't have told you another player from the 1978-79 Lakers. But seeing Magic play changed all that.

Since then, I've looked into the deeper past of the Lakers,
but I don't have memories of sitting on the sofa cheering
West or Chamberlain as a child, or anything like that.
