Want to know what rehab looks like?

Lots of exercising, weights, anti-gravity running, and such.  It's also good to know that even in his limited state, Andrew Bynum can keep members of the Lakers training staff off the low block.

(Thanks to Botsoy for the link.)

I watched that video of Bynum working out and got goose pimples thinking about him coming back!

BK/AK - you two are quite prolific today! It's excellent! But I am having a hard time keeping up with all these new threads.

When do you head over to Staples so I know I have a bit of a break before pre-game thoughts and game thread starts?

Thanks for getting us in the spirit of game day too! Yesterday was torture.... but today much better! Love the AB vid - I'd love to know what % of body weight he was running as that might indicate how close to game time he truly is........just a hint for any locker room ??? you might need.

GO LAKERS

Bynum looking Good!!!
Don't rush him back The Lakers can win the next 4 titles with a healthy roster

NBA make sure you the cage is locked the Lakers are about ready to release the BEAST!!

It's all good in Lakerville!

Kobe is propably thinking i can retire in 7 years with more titles tnan anybody not named bill russel

For all those fancy machines and interesting exercises, I couldn't help but notice that there wasn't a single bottle of Dit Da Jow utilized anywhere in the video.

GO LAKERS!

Thanks for the link. One good thing is that Bynum doesn't look like he's put on any weight from being out so long. Of course that doesn't mean he's anywhere near being in game shape.

He looks good to me.

ESPN put up a poll on who we think the MVP is. Ya'll better got vote for the Kobester.

Bynum is looking pretty good out there. I wonder what kind of special knee brace they will have him wear.
The future of the franchise!!

Have a great weekend all!

I've gotta link Andrew Bynum's best clips just to remind everyone just how good this guy was becoming.

These are the best I could find on youtube.

He looks like he's in better shape than Kobe right now.

#50 tonight! Who'd a thunk it?

Never mind, dumb question.

What Kobey Bryant needs to do to be named the greatest player ever when he retires in six years:
win 4 championships
shoot 50% from the field
average 25-30 points a game
win 3 mvps
win 3 finals mvps
lead the legue in assists 1

I don't know, BK, that trainer looked hefty --

Wow...those are some really cool excercises..as somebody with the similar injury..those are perfect..which makes me wonder though..the severity of the injury...all of what hes doing is going to make him come back 110%..

I have a weird feeling that the Lakers staff is intentionally making him stay out longer to "rehab" to a point where he's stronger than when he went down. I mean..yes thats true of the injury you need to be stronger in the knee to compensate for the dislocation...but I actually think they are using this as an excuse for like an offseason conditioning program.

Remember, the past summer Bynum was doing conditioning on his own...not in supervision of the Lakers. I think the Lakers are using this as a way to get their hands on Bynum and do some conditioning of their own.

I think Phil told the staff "hey I want you to have him as long as we can afford..so if thats the end of the season if we need to win a couple games against the Spurs..we bring him back. If seeding is not a big deal, then we save him until the playoffs"

Phil's strength as a coach is that he knows how to gauge his team. He figured he could stay at the top of the WC with Pau..and then with Pau down he figured they had winnable games.

This loss to the Bobcats probably throws things up in the air since now the Lakers sit in the 3.

GREEEEEAAAATTT link! I like. I like.

I remember when I had to go through rehab after I tore both the top and bottom ligaments in my right ankle at a UCLA vs. Texas track meet when I was running for UCLA back in the day. My rehab was just as arduous, with the trainers constantly thinking of the absolute most painful activity for me to do, then making me do that over and over, then making me do it while holding weights of increasing size, and so on.

Most of these activities were tough for my healthy ankle. Plus, since it was an ankle, I had to do them all on one foot (to work strength and balance at the same time).

That flying saucer looking thing you saw Andrew standing on? I had to do that on one foot, moving it all the way around its circumference with my foot set off-center. OUCH!

The bottom side allows you to put different quantities of sand in it, to increase its weight and inertia. DOUBLE-OUCH!

We didn't have that fancy curved step thingy back in my day. I had to go up and down a regular step, first with my body weight, then while holding bigger and bigger dumbbells.

Of course, being a runner, I would have loved the Altered-G treadmill. What I had was the Olympic sized swimming pool, which I would do my entire track workout in.

Now, my injured ankle is my strongest ankle.

But, since it was an individual sport, there wasn't any pressure to come back too early. I completed my full rehab regimen before getting back on the track.

If we can find it within us to somehow not rush Andrew back, he might say the same thing about his knee (though dislocations are WAY different that just about any other kind of injury).

I'm thinking Andrew comes back real strong (though maybe a little winded).

--FearlessWhackJob

Cool!

The Lake Show,

That's an interesting take especially since you've had the injury. Do you think they're easing him more slowly than he needs to or that he's already ready.

I'd think if he were ready they would have at least stepped him up to a normal tradmill, though they may have already done that since this video is from Monday.

I don't know what the &#*$(&$ I'm talking about, but here is my guess.

Bynum took a while to find his power as an NBA center. In fact, I still don't think he's found it. There is a certain timidity and sweetness in the kid. He'll never enjoy hurting and dominating others like Shaq did. Still he'll become a really great center.

So my feeling is that Bynum will come back a little behind where he left off in terms of feeling his power. We will see growth during the playoffs. But, though we will win the championship, Bynum will not return and immediately be the dominant force in the league. Upon return he will add some d and o to our team and be helpful. He will be good and solid, don't expect more. . .

until the second half of next year. At that point he is going to get as dominant as he ever will.

GO BYNUM!! GO LAKERS!!!!!!!

That's what I still don't like in Turiaf's game.

hey our rehab (no, no, no) is pretty good.

With all this work, they probably need to start looking into bionic parts.

That machine is witchcraft -- how does it alter gravity -- It's against the laws of Newtonian physics -- witchcraft I tell you.

Go Bynum!!!!!!!!

Man is he buff- how much weight was on his shoulders??????

Thanks for the link- that was a cool video!!!!

Go Lakers

Countdown to tonight's game has begun - we need to BBQ up some grizzly meat & have a full-on feast! Not to mention the taco's - WE WANT TACOS!

Have fun at your first game Simi....!

it's a great poll as design. i like how one can navigate the map and see all the states and the international voting

CP3 has only Lo, NC, an edge in AZ and OR

KG has MN and north east.

in vermont kobe got no votes?!!!!!

LBJ only in OH?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tmac very few votes

Kobe dominates more than 30 states and the international where he has 49%

also it is weird that like in TX the total number of votes, even if Tmac has few, for 0%, the total number of votes adds up to 101%. obviously they rounded up ....but the total should be 100%.

well designed site. thanks

MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT LAKERS FANS, especially in the GRAY STATES: WY, ND, MO, AK and AL

Xodus,

Great videos. I love how everyone just throws the ball anywhere near the rim and Bynum just gobbles it up and throws it DOWN. No perfect passes or precise lobs. Just chuck it up there and let the kid finish it off for ya'.

Then, in the middle of the first video, Andrew elbows some poor slob and Kobe seperates the ref from Andrew. Can you believe it? Kobe backs the ref up! Like he's saying to the ref to leave his big man alone!

I loved it. You know, people, the playoffs are ON!

--FearlessWhackJob

PS: I know PJ is trying to somehow ease both Pau and Andrew back in some sort of phased re-entry program. Mark my words. He'll sacrifice a couple of games (as long as we don't fall below #4 that is), to make sure we are primed and ready for the playoffs. WOW!

Good look!

Can't wait til Drew is back in uniform and ready to play.

I agree with all of you...how freakin' cool is it to watch AB working out like that? No visible swelling, and looks like he is staying lean and mean on this extended break. And the self-conscious smile? It must all be good or he wouldn't be sporting that s#!t eating grin all over the training room!

Release the BEAST!!
GO LAKERS!!

Witchcraft HA!

I knew the physicists were up to something. Had I known it was witchery, I would've recommended burning those heathens.

Since it's working to the Lakers favor however, it gets a pass.

Justanothermambafan,

Thanks. I intend to have fun, and I intend to get tacos tonight. Mbenga better play tonight, along with Coby Karl... Man I love that guy.. he needs more minutes.....

Come on guys- do I get to meet you and take your picture before the game?????

Simi

ZIn Master,

I'll get ND to back Kobe, no problem.

Fearless,

You made the same point on last night’s blog and in essence I agree with you – but the problem is that PJ can’t guaranty a top four finish, unless the team finishes ahead of the Suns and is a division winner. They are too close to play those types of games right now.

Jon K.,

You need to chill brother. Just because you didn't see it doesn't mean it isn't there, for one thing. You're obsessing.

There are many methods to treat injuries. The Lakers just happen to use the ones proven to work by medical research. That's what I'd prefer instead of them chasing some Chinese pie in the sky.

You've decided to not trust a guy that's been with the Lakers for 20 years based on the fact that a few players in the last two years have taken longer than estimated to heal. I'd be shocked if they didn't try everything in their power to heal their players, including your magical potions from Eastern and Western herbology, homeopathic remedies, and therapies from other non-allopathic medical paradigms.

I think you haven't really thought through your attitude here.

Every possible motivation goes toward getting people healed on the court ASAP:

1. The training staff are happier because they improve their job security and fulfilled because they're improving the health of their players.

2. The players are happy because they get to play (which most of them love) and because it improves their earning potential and ability (this season) to win a championship.

3. The coach is happier because he has more with which to work which improves his prestige (more possible championships), his future earning potential (books, management, more coaching), and just makes his job more fun.

4. The management paying everyone is happier because they are getting a better return on their investment in games with their stars, playoff depth, and championship.

Given that every motivation lines up with fast healing here, why would they spare any reasonable therapy to the players that could be helped by the therapy?

JohnnyP - DONE!! BBQ'd grizzly meat, tacos and a side of troll - pick it up!

Future looks bright and I have my Maui Jim's ON :)

Lastly, we should all thank Magic for suggesting to Mitch not to trade Bynum and to Kobe for embracing Bynum as a valuable team member..

Dark shades on as the Laker future looks tooooo bright :)

Cheers!

Shout out to all the beautiful laker gurls!!
One and only The Ladies MAN!!

Xodus,

Thanks for the AB17 links. They were a great pick-me-up to get game ready for tonight. I can’t wait to see Andrew return and join Kobe, Pau, Lamar, and Fish as the next great Lakers championship team finally takes the floor.

Man, I love the Beast nickname for Drew. I don’t remember who first started calling him the Beast but he or she deserves a big shout out. Awesome nickname that perfectly describes what Andrew has become. Please take a bow so we know to whom to give the credit and appreciation

Making of the Beast is also the best AB17 YouTube mix I have seen. I especially loved that it began with the Shaq confrontation. How could you not love Drew’s response? I knew he was going to be great right there and then but even I didn’t expect it to happen so soon. It was great to be reminded of why Jerry West said that the Lakers were the best team in the NBA BEFORE trading for Pau Gasol.

Mamba24 needs to add the Making of the Beast to the very top of roll call so we can all get our AB17 fix to start the day. It’s better than the pharmaceutical version of your favorite mood enhancer. I was screaming at my PC in the middle of the day. LOL. Was that a Laker employee helping Drew work out or was that his personal trainer guy?

It seems like a million years ago since we saw Andrew emerge as the Beast. I love Kobe. Lamar, Pau, and Fish as well as the rest of the guys on the team, even including Luke, although I do immediately start clamoring for Phil to take him out as soon as he goes in. But Andrew Bynum is going to become one of the greatest centers in league history. Thank you, again, Jerry and Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak, for not trading him.

Now that we don’t have your Gators to worry about, this should be UCLA’s tournament to win, provided that Collison shows up. Kevin Love has been sensational. So who are you picking, Karl? Bruins or Tarheels? Funny, how even with the Bruins as a #1 seed, I am still looking forward to the NBA playoffs more than the Final Four. Probably because Kevin Love is great and I love my Bruins but no team owns my heart as much as Kobe and the Lakers and now AB17. Get well and dominate, Drew. You are the Beast!

Tom

Benjamin,

"non-allopathic medical paradigms"

I salute you sir.

Laker Lover,

You mean like every other star that expects a call on every foul? I've heard some writers say that they've heard from several refs that Duncan is one of the league biggest complainers. To Duncan's credit he avoids getting T'd up very often, but the fact remains every star complains about calls.

You're using this, like everything else, as a vehicle to continue your Kobe-hate tour. At least you're diligent.

Benjamin,

You have a poor sense of humor recognition.

GO LAKERS!

Xodus,

What im saying is looking at the pressure he can put on his knee already...he looks like he could do some practicing. The one that tells me that is the part when the trainer is trying to post up on Andrew, plus the one where he is making Andrew pivot in the post..

Those are probably the trickey movements because they're sort of herky jerky. The dislocation wont happen from putting weight on it (the dumbelss) but from stupid freak twist of the knee. (ala landing awkardly on your foot) What i looked for was Andrew's reaction to when he has to bend his knee and try to step in front of his body with it (when he's posting up), plus any facial reactions to when he's pivoting.

Im not saying hes NBA ready right now...but I bet that he could do some light practiciing. I mean i dont know his conditioning level..but Id guesstimate his movements would be back 75%, but his strength looks really good, maybe like in the 90%. That I look at by seeing when he has the weight on his shoulder and stands up from a sit down position. I mean he can stand up with weights from sitting down, which means that the muscle strength in the knees is pretty even.

The rest of the comeback would just be from playing. As they say there's no substitute for the real thing.

Obviously Im not a doctor..but just from what it looks like..I think our boy is doing really good and working out hard and will come back.

And think of this Laker fans...it may seem like Bynum has been out forever...but not to a lack of effort...what do you think a Kwame Brown rehab video looks like?

Isn't Dwight Howard aka the "Beast" already?

Simi Laker Girl,

That was funny. I was expecting a video of Mbenga blocking a shot to win tacos, not an actual video of him holding a taco and saying"Tacos," LMAO. Gracias.

Tom

Zin Master,

I agree, that poll is pretty cool. I think I'm most pleased that Kobe got Arizona and Texas.

HmrHed,

Good stuff. I'm right behind you. Physicists can't be trusted.

shneurson,

If that's what Kobe needs, he'll never be named the greatest player ever.

I just don't see him ever leading the league in assists. He plays close enough to a traditional shooting guard, plays in the triangle which prevents ball domination, and he's going against guys like Paul, Nash, Williams, and Kidd.

Fortunately, I don't think he ever needs to lead the league in assists to be the best player ever.

Good news for Kobe: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080328/ap_on_re_us
/abducted_child_myspace

The Lake Show,

“And think of this Laker fans...it may seem like Bynum has been out forever...but not to a lack of effort...what do you think a Kwame Brown rehab video looks like?”

Thanks for the post and encouraging interpretation. You have to appreciate Drew’s work ethic. He does look like he has kept himself in as great a shape as possible. I wondered if that was his personal trainer or a Laker trainer working with him.

Anyway, wonder if Kwame will play tonight? Wonder if the fans will give him a cheer for getting us Pau? LOL. Thanks again, TLS.
