The incredible sinking ship in Dallas
Another game against a good team, another loss for Big D. Tonight, the Mavs were in Denver, got off to a solid start... then were run off the court by the Nuggets in the second half, getting outscored 58-35 en route to a 118-105 loss. I didn't see the whole game (too much March Madness to watch), but I saw enough. Without Dirk, Dallas has trouble generating good shots and a diverse attack, and on the other end, while Denver can score on anyone, nothing Dallas has done against playoff caliber teams indicates they can get stops consistently.
With Golden State about to wrap up a win over Portland, the loss leaves Dallas hanging on to the seven spot on the W.C. playoff ladder with a cracked little fingernail. A game up on Denver, half a game on the Warriors (assuming I got the math right). It doesn't get easier, either. Among their ten remaining games, the Mavs have two games left against Golden State, play in LA, Phoenix and Portland (24-10 at home), and host Utah and New Orleans. The only chippies are two games against the Sonics, and a visit to Staples... to play the Clippers.
My guess? They miss the playoffs, and probably by a couple games. And if that happens, I'd be shocked if Mark Cuban didn't fire Avery Johnson. Could be an interesting offseason in Dallas.
BK

Paul Allen, Mark Cuban are successful business man, but Dr.Buss is smart man when talking about basketball. You only trade for Jason Kidd if you have a big guy who can run, play inside, the big men of Dallas is Dampier not Nortwitsky, i am not surprised with Dallas, i'm glad Lakers did not trade for Jason Kidd to play with Kobe withou a big guy, Dallas made big big mistake to trade Harris and Diop.

I honestly believe that Mark Cuban is to blame for Dallas sudden drop in WC. The play for JK was his call and he sits on the sideline starring down refs, players, coaches like he's the Godfarther of the NBA when he's more like the GURU OF DOO DOO!
Posted by: chuck23 | March 27, 2008 at 10:43 PM
From the glares of the last couple games, Mark Cuban has already fired Avery Johnson. Avery is going into the boardroom this offseason. The Knicks should take notice. He's a solid coach.
Posted by: Maleke | March 27, 2008 at 10:44 PM
I'm willing to bet Dallas misses the playoffs and Avery gets fired in the offseason.
Despite the T-shirt, this is Cuban's fan-tasy team.
He'll start rebuilding next year bec. he'll play real life fantasy GM and start trading players right and left.
Cuban is basically like any fan in this blog - the only difference is he actually has the money to act on his GM, coach fantasies.
Can you imagine if every fan in this blog is a billionaire?
How many times would PJ have been fired by now?
How many times would Mitch have been fired?
How many times would we have traded LO? Kobe? Luke for 1 second round draft pick? LOL
Posted by: LakerinBC | March 27, 2008 at 10:56 PM
BK,
Funny, how just last summer it was the Lakers franchise that was in disarray. In a way, the Mavs should be grateful to Deavon George for blocking the first deal. Imagine how bad the Mavs would be if they had lost Stackhouse and George, too. Not to mention a possible fine from the league for trying to pull shenanigans with Stackhouse re-signing.
The only thing I feel bad about is the damage this is doing to Jason Kidd’s reputation. Plus a big sigh of relief that Mitch had enough sense not to pull the trigger on that deal. There but for fortune. I might have made that deal if I were the GM, mostly because I knew that turning it down was going to set Kobe off. Thank you, Mitch.
As far as Cuban suffering, couldn’t happen to a “nicer” guy as far as I am concerned. lol. Of course, I’m sure you and Andy don’t take any special pleasure in Mark’s misfortune. You’re far too professional for that. For me, though, his plight is thoroughly enjoyable. My only regret is that the Nets didn’t hold out for unprotected first round draft picks. Now, the Mavs will at least have a distant shot in the lottery. LOL.

Um, I'm just glad the Lakers didn't ship out Andrew Bynum for Ason Kidd. Even though I wanted it to happen. But you don't always get what you want. And if you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you need.
Posted by: Amazing_Happens | March 27, 2008 at 11:18 PM
LakerinBC,
A pretty scary thought there. I do believe that over time people would realize that stability helps and that assembling a fantasy team is far different from assembling a real team with parts that need to combine well.
I would have traded Odom for Artest a long time ago...
Posted by: Benjamin | March 27, 2008 at 11:28 PM
LakerinBC,
One of the best posts I've ever read on this blog. It puts this blog and the folks who visit it in perspective. I have watched as a lot of Laker fans have wanted every person associated with this team to be fired, traded or ridden out of town on a rail at one time or another.
Heck, like a certain potential MVP, I wanted to trade Bynum for Jason Kidd, too.
Oooops!!
I love the Lakers and have followed them since I was a 12 year old kid in the late 60's. That being said, it hardly qualifies me to run this team or coach it.
After what Mitch was able to accomplish this season I just sit back and watch. You gotta admit, it's been a hoot.
Posted by: LakerFan in Seattle | March 28, 2008 at 12:08 AM
LakerinBC,
Great observation about Cuban the blogger. He has ruined his franchise with this trade. And how scary to consider what some of us bloggers might have done to the Lakers if we owned the team like Cuban. We might not have had a single player left since a lot of bloggers wanted to trade even Kobe. And Lamar would have been long gone. LOL. Thanks, Mitch.
The NBA is not fantasy basketball. Unfortunately, Cuban has so much money that to him the Mavs are just a fantasy team . LOL.
Tom
Posted by: LakerTom | March 28, 2008 at 12:09 AM
LakerinBC,
Actually, what is even funnier to imagine than a Laker blogger owning the team and controlling the moves is to imagine that every team was owned and controlled by bloggers. LMAO. Sonny in charge of the Kings, Fire32 running the Suns. Mike T. instead of Jerry Buss. It would be total chaos. The league would definitely have to have a committee to approve trades. LOL.

The Mavs will regret the Kidd trade for many years. Harris looks like he is going to develop strong for the Nets, while Kidd probably won't even be with Dallas in two years.
The old basketball axioms still hold up. Don't trade big for small, don't trade young for old.

Well, Denver looks poised to make the playoffs.
It's interesting but, notice how Dallas is falling now that Dirk is gone. The Lakers have had injuries, but are still in the hunt. What this says is, don't be to harsh on them. I mean, look at all the minutes the starters have played, the change in minutes of the Bench Mob, and basically so many things that have had to been dealt with. It's not an excuse, but, the Lakers have done great with what they've been dealt.
Some things can be improved, like Kobe's attitude, even if he feels the refs are against him. (Have you guys noticed that the stuggles the Lakers have had have come after the game where Phil Critized the Ref who was a son of another?)

More hate for Kobe...
Jalen Rose and Chad Ford, both at BSPN, have Chris Paul as the MVP.
Rose says that Kobe wasn't even really considered for the MVP until Pau came to the Lakers. What a joke!
Doesn't anybody realize that CP3 has David West, an all star, Peja, a proven scorer and former all star, Bozi Wells, and an interior presence/ shotblocker in Chandler. Not to mention Bobby Jackson.
These are all PROVEN veterans that are very talented.
Have Kobe trade places with Paul and the Hornets have an even better record.
Some are even saying his technicals are hurting his chances. Guess who only has 5 less technicals tha Kobe this year??? CP3.
I am also tired of hearing that Kobe is the best player in basketball but not the MVP. Like you can't be both.
Every year Jordan won the MVP, he was the best player in basketball.
These writers are so contradictory.

I'm 100% with you on that asessment. When Dallas lost Nowitzki they were barely holding on to the 7th spot and most importantly, they haven't beaten a winning team since J-Kidd's arrival. They'll be out of the playoffs this year and Avery will most definitely get fired.

By the way AK/BK...I read the story about Cuban and teh Mavs being told by the NBA that they have to allow you back into their locker room.
If I were you, I'd tell him to shove his Mavs and their locker room where the sun don't shine. The only interview I'd like to do is when they fall to the 9th seed and are getting ready to go fishing early.

I would be surprised if Mark Cuban fired Avery Johnson, since AJ is not the only person making bad decisions. How can anyone in the Maverick's organization justify trading a couple of young guys for an aging Jason Kidd? Yes he's Jason Kidd, but how much is left in that aging body. I'm so happy Mitch didn't trade AB and Lamar "The Rebounding Beast" Odom for JK. With DN going down with this injury and players not stepping up only shows how one dimensional that team is. I believe the Mavericks won't make the playoffs this year unless they step it up.

Good morning Mamba24, good morning Charles & the rest of this GREAT LAKER NATION!
GAME DAY BABY!!!
Mamba24 - looking forward to that roll call. I can smell it coming - it's coming on the winds of change. That's right - you heard me - we're changing our ways! No more worrying if we lose a game or 2, no more wondering why PJ isn't coaching like we want him to, no more worrying about KB's attitude or anything else. Why? Because of the reasons on the previous thread outlined by FearlessWhackJob (excellent post by the way) - that's why! PJ can't afford for the guys to get burnt out or injured further between now & the playoffs. They've got to reign back just a bit and then go full throttle in the playoffs. We can be content with finishing in the top 4. He's got it worked out - trust in 9rings and we shall be led into the promised land!
The "55 win" and "Championship" bandwagons are rolling people - jump on board or be run over (that means YOU trolls)!!!!
GO LAKERS!

btw, hooray for nene in dallas. made his return after cancer surgery... i think the young man has so much talent but poor circumstance has really riddled his career projectile
(and to be honest, anybody else find it weird that nene can return from life-threatening cancer surgery quicker than our guys can recover from ankle and knee problems?)
Posted by: CBuck | March 28, 2008 at 08:31 AM
I think Avery will get fired but it won't be fair. If Cuban didn't have such a man-crush on Dirk he'd see that his team is led by one of the softest superstars in the league and that filters down to the rest of the team. Dirk hasn't been the same since the Mavs played the Suns in the '06 conference finals.
Posted by: Xodus | March 28, 2008 at 08:35 AM
The daily dime used to be the best thing, but now it's total crap. ESPN is doing itself a disservice posting articles written by doofuses like Jalen Rose and Jon Barry. That said, I actually like the idea of not winning the MVP. I don't want to see any credibility start to be restored to that award. Plus, I like the idea of an extra-motivated Kobe.
Posted by: McGarnagle | March 28, 2008 at 08:49 AM

Judging by his response, Cuban would make a fine pro wrestling manager. He regards that kind of reactionary nonsense as quite clever.

Nice thread this morning! I hope Avery doesn't get thrown under the bus - he's done a good job for those guys. I don't think it was a mistake in theory to get Kidd, he's still awesome in my book. The whole trade was really messy though and I think team morale took a hit. Add in the adjustment period, the recent loss of Dirk and the insane compression in the standings and you've got a very tough situation. Of course, really good teams step in up in tough times so it will be interesting to see if they rededicate themselves or fold.
The tough adjusment period that I see with late season trades around the league makes me appreciate Pau and the rest of the Lakers all the more. It was amazing how he fit right in, embracing and being embraced by the team (quite literally in Sasha's case, haha).
Posted by: dave m | March 28, 2008 at 09:06 AM
It is surely a great day here in big D!
Cuban getting spanked by the NBA (again), his team reeling in the wake of some dubious personnel decisions (again), and fans all over Mavs blogs threatening to storm the Bastille if Avery isn't fired, and preferably before the end of the season.
Good times, Laker fans!

If Dallas doesn't make the playoffs that one is on Mark Frankenstein Cuban..They are just not all that as far as being a good team when you look at the West and everyone else...But hey, they laughed at the Lakers demise, if you will, the last couple years when they won a couple games, had the best record til Golden State smacked dat azz in the 1st round...basically exposing their true weaknesses..mental toughness..any ole wayz, I don't feel sorry for no team not named Los Angeles Lakers...

DTM_T_MAN,
You are correct that Kobe needs to chill about the refs. But, PJ said, and many a blogger has confirmed (through the wonders of DVR) that Kobe's tech are pretty split between complaining about calls about himself and sticking up for his team mates.
That is definitely one of the reasons this squad follows him so well. They see that even if he's a little overboard sometimes, he has their backs.
It really is up to PJ to corral Kobe and use his abilities for good only. You don't fault the guard dog for biting someone, you fault the trainer for not keeping him under control.
It's not the Mamba's fault! It's the fault of the Mamba Tamer!

Mamba,
Add me to the Don't F w/the K-Bros bandwagon (my other bandwagon has broken down, and I need a ride). Put me down as the "Taking Names" part of the "Kicking A** and Taking Names" duo.
BTW, we need an A** Kicker to complete this duet.
