That Kobe Bryant fella: He'll probably stick in the league

March 3, 2008 | 10:17 am

Kobe_bryant_dunks_against_the_dalla Obviously, nothing is certain in this crazy NBA world we're all witnessing, but when a guy has a game like the one Kobe Bryant enjoyed on Sunday, one that powered a 108-104 OT win over the Mavs, the odds of carving out a career appear to increase dramatically.  It's not simply a matter of Kobe racking 52 points (although in and of itself, ain't all that shabby).  It's when, how, why those points were accrued.  For example, if credentials are created by taking over down the stretch, then Kobe's 22 points in the fourth frame and the octet in overtime likely serve as formidable resume filler.  Props were also owed for going 15-15 from the line during that time period.  Pretty good in any case, but particularly noteworthy under these "Kobe spent the opening three quarters struggling to sink a charity stripe shot" circumstances.  But most importantly, the reasons for Kobe's late minute theatrics.  His teammates couldn't get it going in steady fashion and needed The Mamba to manufacture a triumph.

Wanna hear something ironic?  A large part of why Kobe could take over was Avery Johnson often opting to leave him in single coverage, because, unlike during previous seasons, his teammates can't remain unmanned for long stretches.  Kobe would wholeheartedly concur.   He likes his new buddy Pau Gasol (whom the Mavs consider a changer for L.A.).  He likes his buddy LO (who took on the lion's share of Dirk-guarding duties, no cake walk), his 2008 long distance runner-in-crime.  And a lot of people like Kobe's chances at MVP.

The box score serves as another reminder for the Mavs that, to quote U2, they still haven't found what they're looking for on the road with Jason Kidd in the fold (of course, they've also yet to play with Ty Lue, although that should be changing soon). The Lakers can follow that feeling themselves to some degree.  They come out on top, yet lose their hold on the choicest of W.C. real estate.  Marc Stein is also garnering them #2 status (Marty Burns of SI did him one lower).  Maybe they've been listening to the Times' Mark Heisler, who remains a bandwagon holdout.

William Henry Parker and his employers remain on the same payroll, if not- and quite possibly never- the same building.  To quote "The Breakfast Club," Smush and Starbury should get together and go bowling.

America may not be perfect, but it still represents hope.  Just ask Kareem and DJ Mbenga.

Quoting drewpaukobe, "Kelly Dwyer - He's gotta say something to get noticed...if he writes that Kobe should win MVP, he's part of the army. This way, he's the COURT JESTER."

Exactly. Blog-sync-think again. Funny you capitalized the last because that's exactly the moniker I used when I used to pen those silly, inflamatory columns.

frank1rizzo,

I disagree completely. He doesn't need size, he needs more strength and explosiveness... Kobe squats over 400 pounds, but his legs aren't huge like a bodybuilder, they are just extremely strong, quick, and explosive.

No one was suggesting that Pau turns into Antony Mason or Charles Oakley... we were saying that a little weights would go a LONG ways.

OK touchy subject. I wonder why Kobe gets no love from the league. He has been nothing but good for this league.

I think part of it goes back to the sexual assault charges. It might have been the higher the expectations the greater the let down. But, on some level, I think the league has never forgiven him for that.

I want to remind the league that HE WAS FOUND NOT-GUILTY!!! He might have strayed. That happens. But that woman was a nut. She blew it up. He is a hard working and decent guy, not to mention one of the most dedicated to the sport ever.

So league, I'm glad to see Kobe got player of the month. But he deserves more. If you have any grudge over him after all he has done for basketball, GET OVER IT. Celebrate Kobe!!!

janjaya,

HA HA HA

How long did it take Shaq??

First it's "I just want to fit in." After 6 games of dragging them down it's "No do it my way!!!!"

Let's review...

Two weeks ago - The Big Cactus
Last week - The Big Control Freak
Today - The Big Manipulator
April 2008 - The Big Baby (oops taken by Davis in Boston)
November 2008 - The Big Red Giant (what the SUN becomes when it starts running out of fuel and can no longer sustain life in it's solar system)
January 2009 - The Big Has Been
April 2009 - The Big Memory
November 2009 - The Big Weight Around Their Necks
Trade Deadline 2010 - The Big Expiring Contract

We honor Shaq for his contributions to our (Laker) nation, but his accomplishments and ideas are tied to the past and the failed (Suns) administration...

LOL

KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!

Good points about Gasol in regards to strength, but here is the thing speaking as a guy who plays ball sometimes.

I play some center and power forward, and I am a pretty thick guy, I am 6'4" and I weigh about 240 to 245, and yes I do work out.

Now when I play as a player in those traditionally power positions and I am playing against a guy who can throw me around like Aldridge did against Gasol friday night, which doesnt happen often, I get pissed, I mean PISSSSED. And I hit the gym harder that next week.

And Im not a pro who gets paid millions for playing it, just some schlub in pick up games. So I guess its a matter of what is more important to you.

and I understand that bulking up can be detrimental to some people, but still doing some squats and getting stronger legs wouldnt affect him much and give him a better base strength.

DrewPauKobe

"When he can play his true position, he will punish the opposition."

Pau is an interesting player. His "true position" is a bit outside of the standard definition. He takes the "power' out of power forward. He doesn't bang and he hasn't been shooting the mid range face up, opting to drive for the right or left baby hook. He'll need the J when Andrew comes back.

As you say, he's good, and it would be great to have the option of playing Ronny with him instead of backing him up.

Until then, the word is obviously out. Portland banged and Dallas threw a heavy dose of elbows and Dampier at us.

Repost from Last Thread. Here's my opinion about Kobe and not getting the MVP award...

"If not this year, it may never happen. The bias is prevalent and the comet will pass and will be appreciated once it's gone."

Still waiting for the headline :

"That Von Wafer Fella: He'll Probably Stick in the League"

Lakers start a new win streak!

Lakers undermanned with injury, underperformed by usual talented bench find a way to Win against Dallas, pretty awesome! The Kobe/Gasol doing a fantastic job, wait till they are joined by Bynum and I would not know how to describe it. One thing I know, I can't wait to see those games. It's like Magic, Worthy and Kareem all over again! But this time Kareem is only 20 years old, Magic plays much longer for us to enjoy and Worthy has turned Big Game Spaniard. Great times ahead for Lakerland!

johnnyP -

actually, the charges were DROPPED because KF's sworn statements to law enforcement ended up being lies as proven by physical evidence and other witnesses,

but you are right...the NBA and the writers will never forgive him, and it's obviously the reason they didn't give him the award when Nashy was winning instead...

Let's review,

Before, Nash, great supporting cast, so he must be MVP - Kobe terrible supporting cast, so he can't win...

Now, LeBron terrible supporting cast so he must win, Kobe great supporting cast so he can't win.

It hurts my head.

Jesterguru - So THAT'S where the handle comes from...nice!

KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!
KOBE FOR MVP!!!

johnnyP,

While I agree with your take, I do have to correct one thing...

The only thing that was "found" was Kate Faber with millions of Kobe's dollars!

The case was dropped. It never went to trial.

AK,

Goodfellas was an extraordinary piece of work; many of the wise guy/gangster/under-belly genre are some of my favorites for sure. I personally knew and worked in (Nevada's gaming industry) with one lady whose ex-husband (now dead) was a lieutenant for the thugs who (within reason) were accurately portrayed in "Casino", according to her.

Dances with wolves, on the other hand, was "selected for preservation in the United States Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". I was moved by all aspects of the movie and for the aforementioned reasons am glad that it won over the Academy as well. We'll have to agree to disagree.

Besides, a childhood friend (from Paramount, my HS alma mater of all places) had a fat part in the movie (as well as other Costner efforts) and did quite well for himself. I agree though that Scorsese may have been snubbed when he shouldn't have been. That's Hollywood.

Woops, wrong thread!

THE MAVS WIN WAS NOT JUST ABOUT KOBE…

Sometimes the bias against Kobe Bryant just turns totally laughable. Our hometown Kobe critics seem to want to take what was a great team win and use it as some form of proof of Kobe’s selfishness and evidence against his leadership and greatness.

Wrong! In truth, the win over the Mavs was a great team win. Kobe inspired the team to play with great heart, effort, and confidence. For three quarters, he played the facilitator, getting everybody involved, encouraging the team to believe.

And his teammates responded. Despite being seriously short-handed, the Lakers played great team defense overall and held the Mavs to under 37% shooting. Luke Walton shut down Josh Howard and Lamar Odom hounded Dirk Nowitzki for most of the game. The Lakers blocked 9 shots compared to 2 for Dallas and out-rebounded the Mavs 58-53.

Offensively, while the Laker players other than Kobe did not have good shooting nights, they still played aggressively and hard, earning 17/23 trips to the free throw line, better than the 17/25 for the entire Mavs team. The team also still racked up 20 assists versus 23 for the Mavs. There is more to great team play than just shooting.

Finally, Avery Johnson and Kobe both brought up the point that it was much harder for the Mavs to double team and stop Kobe now that he has spot-up shooters who can hit 3-pointers and big men who can finish at the rim to whom he can pass. Kobe even laughed that on one occasion he had a wide-open 3-pointer as the Mavs converged on Pau.

The definition of having a Kobe bias is interpreting everything that Kobe does is or involved in to support the preconceived bias that Kobe is a selfish player who cannot lead his team to a championship. Just ignore any facts that don’t fit the premise. LOL.

The Kobe critics claim that “you don’t win championships that way.” What those people need to do is put aside their bias and realize that the win against the Mavericks was just the Lakers showing everybody another way that this team has of winning big games.

Kobe led the Lakers to this victory in a lot more ways than just 52 needed points. Wake up, he is the NBA’s Most Valuable Player this year…again.

jester,

“Blog-sync-think again”

Pretty soon the media will catch on that Blog-Sync-Think is the wave that reveals it all. Or maybe it is the paranormal karma that changes all. Anyway, what the blog-sync-think is saying right now is spelled C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N-S-H-I-P! Can you feel, breath, live it?

Tom

"Pig" Miller

How are you man?

I feel this blog has a great amount of posters that are well rounded in terms of: Ethics, Education, Athletic and Life experience. We have experienced a few non-laker fans from up north to AZ, and once in a while a Dallas Cleveland. Most of them spew their hatred or lack of tact on the blog till they realize that they should leave their comments in a different fashion. Take example the latest victim "blingbling." He is one poster who will eventually learn.

In all honesty, I feel that particular Suns Fan just learned that the word "caliber" is also applicable aside from a bullet gauge. Kind of like the old mocking of the Prisoners who found religion by the Wayans brothers on their hit comedy show "In Living Color."

At least I can say, his posting caliber does not match yours.

Have a good one man.

sonnybelfast,

I have a relative who had a character in Casino as well. I wouldn't give names over the internet except to say this relative worked for Lefty Rosenthal and the character portrayed in the movie was the guy sitting with DeNiro when the FBI plane ran out of gas and made a landing on the golf course. I have not asked him about any of these events though, so I can't speak to them.

JohnnyP, maybe the league (CONTROLLED BY MAN) is also hating on KOBE for snitching out Shaq, (violating the CODE) when he got interrogated for the Colorado thingy??? It is said that dudes are to stick together about those things, infidelities and mistresses and all type of stripper conquests with women not named WIFEY and Kobe called him out!! LOL Seriously, players who came into the league (Wade, Bogut) that didn't even know Kobe, were dissing him! Something IZ up!

Bottom line, I say what's that got to do with basketball, he still has been the best the last couple years, give him that dayum MVP trophy already!!

WHAT IS BLOG-SYNC-THINK?

Blog-Sync-Think is a term I invented to describe the phenomenon where two or more bloggers suddenly and simultaneously post the same identical comment or observation.

Sometimes the Blog-Sync-Think is the result of an ongoing discussion when participants experience a consensus creating Obama moment. Other times, it is the result of eerie and inexplicable mental coincidences between seemingly unrelated Laker fans.

Right now, Blog-Sync-Think is coalescing and converging into powerful Blog-Deja-Karma that is restoring and reinvigorating the powerful mystique of the Lakers great legacy. Like a flame growing brighter, Blog-Sync-Think is saying C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N-S-H-I-P.

Tom

psychedlakergirl,

>>> what PJ said last night and was written in LATimes this a.m. LO and KB24 are logging serious minutes right now and he was worried about that. If he threw in Fish to that mix - I think it would be really dangerous as that's all our vets (ex Gasol).

This seems more like disinformation than the real thing. PJ is best known for what he doesn't say. For example:

a) It doesn't address Fish's prolonged slump. A great deal of his shots have been short. They don't consistently have that beautiful arc he is famous for.
b) If it's about bench minutes, Sasha is logging more than Jordan, since Kobe is spending so much time at the 3. You'd think he'd want their minutes to be about the same.
c) Again, Kobe has about 17,000 more NBA minutes than Fish does, even though they came into the league at the same time. Why would Fish need more rest?

I just think we have an incomplete picture of what's really going on.

Tom you are cracking me up. I love hippies!

(Also the b-s-t -> b-d-k is working on the MVP glory for the Kobester.)

I reiterate what I said in my post game comments: LeBron is more physically dominant than Kobe and a more natural passer. This allows him to dominate other teams in a similar way even though his skill level (by which I mean, shooting, intelligent, disruptive defense, intellectual domination and reactivity to defense, mental preparation and visualization, wiling himself to make crazy shots and get rebound in crunch time, etc., etc.) is not at Kobe's level (and may never be, or even need to be). He will always rebound better, and put up better stats because he can physically dominate. Yes, he is skilled, but not Kobe skilled.

What does this mean? If Dwight Howard averaged 30/20/4 blocks, he would be MVP even if he couldn't pass well out of double teams or shoot free throws in crunch time or whatever. I know this is true because I watched Shaq for his whole career. (OK, he could pass pretty well, but my point is:) Physical domination is rightly rewarded in the NBA.

That said, Kobe is the heart and soul of a legit contender. LeBron is the heart a soul of a decent but not great playoff team. To say that Kobe should not win because he has good help is insanely hypocritical base on the entire history of MVP voting. Also, it implies that he is not the driving force of this team. That this team is not always on his shoulders just as much as much as the Cav's are on LeBron's. This is completely and totally untrue. Kobe is the engine that makes this team run. No one who has watched any games (outside of blowout garbage time) this season could deny this. Kobe's better help means that his team wins more games with a much tougher strength of schedule. And that's the absolute beginning and end of that.

So, if you want to reward LeBron's physical domination as much as Kobe's skill, I can't argue with you. But if it if the race is close, and you can't accept skill level as a tie breaker (which I certainly do), record and strength of schedule must be, otherwise, you would have to start removing MVP's starting with KG's candidacy this year...Dirk '06-07? Gone (and how), Nash '05-'06? Too much help, sorry...etc., etc., ad infinitum. Kelly Dwyer can suck on it, but that's the truth.

Go Lakers!

Charles,

Thanks still not feeling better tho, it feels like my ear drum is going to burst.

With regards to true position of Pau....

What was his position during the FIBA games? I think he was in 5, if I'm not mistaken. It is best to confuse the coaches of other teams, if we don't identify the positions of pau and socks when both will be available. Just keep them guessing whether Socks will be in the Bench Mob or the Starter; whether Pau will play 4 or 5. Strategies and tactics should be part of deception so as to confuse opponents. Besides, if Socks is in the Bench Mob, he will also play a great role with Farmar, Sasha, Ronnie and Walton finishing the game because most of the best teams in West have a shallow 2nd stringers, they can't match that strenght. Lakers will just keep up the pressure from Rd. One then Rd. 2, By the time they reached 3rd & 4th Q's., the starters of other team have acquired too many fouls while Lakers have spread out their strenght.

What matters most, is the 4th Q. As you saw the game yesterday, PJ played the best players on the floor at 4th and OT.

Although I don't condone bullfights, if you watch a matador, he takes out his sword and lunce it to the neck straight to the heart of the bull in the end, not in the beginning. (I personally don't condone the traditional sport in the Mediterranean because it is too bloody and uncivilized to kill the bull just for the show.)

OK Folks -- Having trolled the Mavs and Suns Blogs today -- I can say this. This blog is like a Bordeaux Chateau Lafitte to their Box-o-Wine. Seriously, give yourselves some props -- it's no comparison.

Is 60 wins possible?

Looking at the schedule 16-6 is achievable. Squeezing two more, may be a challenge.

What are you saying LakerTom?

"Blog-Sync-Think is coalescing and converging into powerful Blog-Deja-Karma that is restoring and reinvigorating the powerful mystique of the Lakers great legacy"

Your passion and optimism got inter-mixed again, so the blog-deja-vu twists could not decide whether to promote Championship or Dynasty or Obama? We won one game on a overtime, that was the headline. LOL!

I thought this thread from the Mavs website would cheer everybody up.
No false illusions from Mavs fans as what to expect.
Here is a post and some funny comments:

MAVS MATCH UP BETTER ONCE BYNUM GETS BACK?

Andrew Bynum, the Lakers' baby-faced big man, has an extremely bright future. But, as he was getting interviewed (and ABC went to that annoying split screen), I couldn't help but wonder whether the Mavs will match up with the Lakers better once Bynum returns this season.

Erick Dampier usually fares pretty well against traditional big men like Bynum, who might not regain his explosiveness right away. Damp doesn't do so well against finesse scorers like Pau Gasol, who has a game-high 12 points midway through the second quarter.

Problem is, I don't know if the Mavs would want Dirk defending Gasol for 35-40 minutes.

Is Josh Howard pissing anybody else off? The guy is the biggest waste of God-given talent. Who told him that he could shot fadeaways off the dribble? And if he doesnt have a huge first quarter, he is worthless the rest of the game..worthless

NO WAY the Mavericks can ever match up with the Lakers.

Terry sucks. Howard is disinterested. Stackhouse old, slow, and inconsistant, and we have an inferior head coach.

yes, it is true. usually when a team starts more quality, talented players their opponents match up better. that's why so many teams matched up well with magic's laker, bird's celtics, jordan's bulls, hakeem's rockets, duncan's spurs, the shaq-kobe lakers etc. team's should learn from this and stop starting good players. oh, brother.

Early in the season, Mark Cuban had the answer about the trade of Dirk for Kobe, definitely No. I wonder if he thought about it again...
When Andrew Bynum plays side by side with Gasol, one guy throws up the ball, the other guy gets the rebound for a putback, or they throw each other lob passes that the guards can't reach, that's is called Twin tower that Duncan and Robinson used to do in SA.
It resulted in a Championship for the Spurs...

One of the stupidest articles I have ever read regarding the Lakers. Once Bynum gets back, the Mavs won't be able to match up at all. This is ridiulous. Bynum, Gasol and Odom are the three towers. Though I do not know if they can keep up with Detroit in the finals, I do know that the Mavs are not going to be able to keep up with the Lakers

Tom

Kinda funny how you can judge a person's "caliber" just by looking at them in their favorite team's jersey at an away game. I hate the Funs.

Pig

"Pig" Miller....

I sometimes check the Suns" blogs and come away with a definite sense of a negative, racist type of vibe. Sad, really that some folks take what should be a diversion and entertainment and project such tasteless ideas. In addition, most of the comments there offer no Bball analysis...just rants.....either for the Suns or against other teams...mainly the Lakers.

To LakeShow and AK,

Lakeshow,

you wrote this in the last thread:

But there it is from Phil Jackson's mouth that the 45 points wasnt that great because it took 40 shots it took to get there. It meant that he was taking about half of the team's shots or more, which means there was no fluidity to the offense.

This was clearly my point, and the point of other bloggers over the summer, that while its great if Kobe scores points, it doesnt nothing for the team if hes taking more than half the shots.

My response:

1. I think I commented that it was 50%.
2. why didn't you respond to the 50% then?

To re-phrase: If Fish is shooting 50% is that a
good night, a bad night or a mediocre night? To
look for more insight: If Lamar is hurt and shooting
40%, Luke is hurt and shooting 35%, Kwame is hurt
and shooting 25%, Bynum is shooting 40%, & Smush is
SMUSH and shooting 35%, why is Kobe shooting
50% detrimental to the game?

AK,

from the earlier post I asked you a question. you
didn't respond. Hmmm .... Let's open it up a bit.

To ANYONE/EVERYONE out there:

A question for you: What is the difference b/n Kobe's
play this year, Kobe's play at the beginning of last
year before the injuries and Kobe's play with Shaq
when they won the last tittle?

I'm not trying to be argumentative. I'm actually looking
for a logical answer. The comments about Kobe being
a *BALLHOG* make no sense to me when we had a
team full of hurt people who aren't playing well.

A simple question: Which is more important, in terms
of a player playing well, spending extra hours in the
gym or Kobe passing the ball to that player? If your
answer is "Kobe passing the ball" please explain
Farmar in the Freshman vs. Sophomore all-star game.

A second question: Why are y'all so quick to put
the improved play of "Farmar, Luke, Lamar, Sasha,
Turiaf & Bynum on Kobe instead of giving them
their props for working hard this summer?

A third question: Last year, some of y'all were saying
that D-Wade was a better player than Kobe. D-Wade
was less of a ballhog & more of a TEAM player than
KB. The question is: if D-Wade is such a team player
then why does Smush suck so badly?

For the record, I tried to watch very carefully this year.
If Smush had played well for Miami, then I actually
would have evidence to support the ballhog argument.
When is the last time Smush actually played?

*I* think the EVIDENCE is quite clear, but obviously
some of y'all think differently. Educate me please.

Last year, we had a team full of hurt players who didn't
know the offense well. This year we have a team full
of players who know the offense and are busting their
butts on a regular.

Two years ago in the playoffs, Steve Nash asked
"Who are the Lakers going to go to besides Kobe?"
The rest of the Lakers have finally given him an answer
and I STRONGLY SUPPORT & CHEER ALL of the Lakers
who have worked hard to improve their game.

Mamba24 -

You're the best! Thanks for including me in the Rolllllll Calllllll!!!!

Nobody talking about Bynum! what's up?

Baywood

bronxlakerfan,

"I sometimes check the Suns" blogs and come away with a definite sense of a negative, racist type of vibe."

Noooooo, really?? That just can't be!!! Let's let Chris Rock give some insight...

"Kevin Nealon: This Monday, America celebrates what would've been Martin Luther King's 63rd birthday. Most people will get the day off work, except the residents of Arizona who voted against the King holiday, more on this from SNL news correspondent Chris Rock.

Chris Rock: Now there's a lot of talk about the people of Arizona being racist. So I went to see for myself, I went to Arizona and I'm walking through the streets of Tucson pushing my little baby brother in a stroller when a white woman comes up to the baby, smiles and says 'Boy what a pretty niglet.' Now if you don't like black people, that's one thing, but what I can't understand is why people in a hot-ass desert town like Tucson, Arizona wouldn't want a day off work. It's not like you have to do something black on that day. You don't have to ready Ebony magazine, you don't have to watch Soul Train, all you have to do is not work. Now if this was an Elvis holiday, they'd take that off. It would be like another Christmas. With big fat white guys coming down chimneys with Elvis jumpsuits on, giving out qualudes. Now, everybody doesn't get Martin Luther King's birthday off, even the states that celebrate, some people still have to work. Now one group that never have to work are prisoners. Criminals. Every criminal in every jail gets the day off work, which means even James Earl Rey, the man who killed Martin Luther King get's the day off. He's so crazy, he's probably walking around prison saying, "Everybody get's the day off today and nobody even bothered to thank me. " Now what Arizona needs to do is give Dr. King somebody else's holiday. There are so many holidays we celebrate every year that mean nothing. Like Columbus Day. Nobody celebrates Columbus Day, nobody puts three ships in their front yard. First of all, Columbus discovered the West Indies. Second of all, the land he discovered had occupants on it. That's like discovering someone's back yard. All Columbus did was discover a West Indian back yard. He got his little flag and said "I claim this land for Spain." And the West Indians are like, "Hey, Mon, get your darn flag off me lawn now. Move it now!" So Arizona, get your act together and hail the King! Thank you very much. "

Hmrhed,

You wrote: Second, given the above ... I completely disagree that Kobe taking over the game hurts the team in any way. The rotation will be much tighter in the playoffs in any regard, and I don’t care if the 7th, 8th and 9th off the bench are getting offensive touches. When your set plays are well defended the only variable left is to hand the ball to your best player and ride him. Sometimes, that loosens up the defense and you can go back to your set plays to Luke Walton, or whatever. The intangible is offensive rebounding — when Kobe is off having Bynum, Gasol and Lamar getting second and third shot opportunities is the key, because not even the Spurs can survive being outrebounded by 10 every game of a seven game series.

Nice post!

Neil,

you wrote: It was a great game for Kobe but let 's not forget Detroit where he tried to take over and couldnt.San Antonio's defense and also Detroits and Boston's is a lot better than Dallas's.Iam not being a Kobe hater but remember their is a reason Kobe never been an MVP>>>>A great game for Kobe but you can't win a championship like that.

My response: Go tell that to MJ

hobbitmage-

Personally, I think there are a lot of similarities between Kobe this year, and Kobe last year before the wheels came off the wagon... but I'm not sure what you're getting at. 24 was getting all sorts of very positive press about how he had changed his game and his leadership abilities. Then, of course, it all went to hell when everyone got hurt.

Had the Lakers stayed healthy and kept winning, I think Kobe could/would have won the MVP.

As others have noted, the most likely reason for Fisher's recent shooting is that he is coming back down to his normal level. This was on track to be his best year ever (at least in shooting); pretty unusual for someone at his age to make a significant jump in performance like that.

BK,

You wrote: Personally, I think there are a lot of similarities between Kobe this year, and Kobe last year before the wheels came off the wagon... but I'm not sure what you're getting at. 24 was getting all sorts of very positive press about how he had changed his game and his leadership abilities. Then, of course, it all went to hell when everyone got hurt.

Had the Lakers stayed healthy and kept winning, I think Kobe could/would have won the MVP.

My response:

1st. thanks for responding.

2nd. My point is that the Lakers are *NOT* doing better
because Kobe is passing the ball more. The Lakers
are doing better because his TEAMMATES have and
continue to work harder than they worked in the past!
While your brother may have many different opinions
about why the Lakers are doing better, the one he
*seems* to emphasize the most is Kobe
improving the play of his teammates. [ I say "seems"
because I may be mis-reading him and I want to give
him the chance to say so. ] It seems to me that if he
was playing like this 7 years ago, and he was playing
like this 5 years ago, and he was playing like this last
year, then he *HAS NOT* changed his game.

I would like *EVERYONE* to give credit where credit
is due! The last two years he single-handedly kept
a spirit of winning about the Lakers. He got us in
the playoffs in the WC against the ilk of the Suns,
Spurs & Mavs. Yes, he lost some games for us
by shooting and missing or by not passing to the open
man. He also won a TON of games for us when the
rest of our team couldn't buy a shot! He has said that
he does not enjoy playing like he's had too the last
two seasons and no one seems to believe him.

Give credit to Farmar for what Farmar has done! Don't
put this on Kobe. The same is true with Fisher & Sasha.
The fact that Lamar needed Gasol to play like he's
currently playing is .... SAD! However, it is what it
is and I support him.

Go Lakers!
Go Kobe!

hobbitmage,

Nicely put.

i peeked into dallas @ utah

after yesterday game, feels like the the playoffs started already in the western conference.

this will be real MARCH Madness

look, Kobe didn't rat out Shaq.
believe me, there's a man club, lodges even.
Kobe was speaking man to man to the cop. those words would have normally never hit the outside, they would have always been in confidence, but the transcript was leaked by unknown sources(so the world runs).

people need to stop acting like a bunch of cackling hens repeating the scenarios played out by clowns(literally) who are supposed to define manhood on radio, tv and in print.

other than this, Kobe has been a good citizen, the charges are dropped, there's no reason not to believe his version. the temptations out there must be enormous, and it's no secret that there are many affairs on the road. indeed, it's a sign of virility and manhood for many of us, even when we cluck about it in public(in front of our wives, mothers daughters and sisters, though they think it's all pretty exciting too...). nobody seems to remember Big Game James, arrested in Huoston with TWO, count 'em TWO(!) hookers. James is a great guy, as is Kobe(for a bunch of dumb@ss jocks..). we don't need to hate him for that now. personally, i hope he's over whores, i mean i like whores too(or at least women in general, and they seem to need to be whores to get along these days, but that's another subject), i just don't think think it's really that healthy for everyone's psyches in the long run, if you know what i mean. after a while of whatching someone debase herself, one becomes debased, but that's not basketball, and THAT is my point.

"personally", when i see Kobe with with his family, or i look at my wife, i know what he did was a breach of faith and wrong, but he does get the pass for admitting his mistake. so as a human and not knowing him personally, i have to suspend judgement and respect him as i would any other stranger.

but "personally" doesn't matter. i only came to care about him because of the way he played ball for my favorite team. on that basketball level, i have to love him, he's played his @ss off for my team, he's always played at a high level even while hurt. it will be difficult when the basketball relationship ends to replace him, though the Lakers will have to move forward and find the next glory(we hope)...

i've seen the Baylor/West years(the end of them). i've seen the Wilt/West years, the Magic/Kareem/Worthy years, the Shaq/Kobe years and now and i can say Kobe's a unique talent. enjoy it while you can Lakers fans, this doesn't happen everyday, you may never see better, though it'd be awesome and amazing if it happened... [laughing emoticon]

lebron or kobe?

If the Lakers win it all, Vlad Rad should not get a ring. The guy has missed 5 more games for a strained calf. I hear crickets.

Anyday Mamba24 is in the blog is a good day.
